The first game at the stadium on Sunday (Sept. 13) between the Rams and Dallas Cowboys will also be

spectator-less, but the Rams look forward to welcoming fans when conditions allow. “If you’re going to open up a building in a pandemic, the silver lining is by being the biggest, by being the most modern, by having six times the Wi-Fi capability of any other stadium, we can make this technologically safe. We can make it very safe for fans to socially distance, without having to change any of our design, and that’s the great thing about building the stadium for 2020,” LA Rams COO Kevin Demoff told CNBC. “When we built this stadium, we built it for the next two or three decades. ... Hopefully, we can resume back to our normal projections for 2021 and beyond...” • The state-of-the-art indoor-outdoor stadium (the first of its kind in the National Football League) cost $5 billion to build and spans nearly 300 acres of land (three times the size of Disneyland). The stadium can seat up to 100,000 people and has the largest video screen in the NFL. It’s slated to host the 2022 Super Bowl and the opening ceremonies of the 2028 Olympic Games.

A Slice of Life: Looking north from the Santa Monica Pier, sunset on Labor Day Sunday with coloration from California wildfires blazing throughout the region. Re: Letters, Sept. 3, 2020, ‘A Word from the Venice Chamber of Commerce to Venice and Los Angeles Government Officials’ It was interesting to see that Letter to the Editor from the Venice Chamber of Commerce in the 9/3 issue. I have lived in Venice for 28 years. The writer claims that Venice is degraded by the homeless out here. That may be true, but where was the

Chamber in our fight against the grotesque gentrification that has physically destroyed Venice, or getting limitations on new home size, or stopping 8 a.m. construction noise in residential areas, or struggling against the the loss of small businesses due to the lack of commercial rent control? These are the things that really degraded and destroyed our community. The Chamber was nowhere to be found. Maybe they

are just fighting for the hipsters and yuppies and tasteless rich. Jack L. Schwartz, Attorney at law Venice Re: Councilmember Bonin’s Obstruction of The Venice Place Project (Editor’s Note: The next City Council Planning and Land Use Management Committee (PLUM) hearing for The Venice Place Project has been scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m. For meeting and agenda information visit: lacity.org/ government/follow-meetings/ council-committee-meetings) Holy cow, I just turned 80! And 46 years in Venice. I daresay I brought the movie business here at 73 Market Street Studio in 1974, shortly after producing “The Sting.” In 1988, my restaurant, 72 Market Street, brought almost 20 years of fine dining to Venice. OK: so much for pulling rank, self-aggrandizement, and bragging. Here’s why I’m writing: WTF is wrong with The Venice Place Project that eight years of planning, permitting, placating,

and complying with every known rule and regulation has failed to achieve? Everything about it is classy, considered, vetted, and approved by every group with the authority to do so. And yet Councilmember Bonin is unilaterally standing in its way with a rarely used, and highly controversial 245 Action. I have to say that the architectural integrity of this project is exemplary. And the void of Venice hotel rooms is too obvious to reiterate here. So what’s the problem? It can’t be legal; it can’t be aesthetic; it can’t be practical. But… Tell me it can’t be personal, that someone is able to circumvent what thus far has been the demonstrated will of the people; people of Venice who have taken their time to help shape, and then consistently voiced their support for this project; elected and selected people who have made the rules and whose job it is to interpret those rules. How is the process supposed to work if not like this? How are involved community members supposed to believe that their participation makes a difference if

unilateral action can be taken at the last minute with a project that has been supported, vetted and approved as this one has? How are we supposed to believe that our Councilmember represents our communal interests? I fervently hope that Mr. Bonin will consider reconsidering. Certainly, we should be able to create a few dozen more hotel rooms for our millions of annual visitors. Tasteful and truly useful projects like this don’t come along often. Mr. Bonin should step up and acknowledge that the project has done what it’s supposed to do. It’s gone through the appropriate scrutiny, it’s built plenty of support, and Venice needs it. Please. Let’s not wait until I’m 90. Respectfully, Tony Bill, Barnstorm Films Venice

WAM Adds an ‘I Spy’ Treasure Hunt with a $500 Prize This year’s Westchester Arts & Music Block Party weekend has activities for the whole family, both virtual and IRL PHOTOS COURTESY OF WESTCHESTER ARTS & MUSIC BLOCK PARTY

By Shanee Edwards Like many things in 2020, the fifth annual Westchester Arts & Music Block Party Weekend (aka WAM) is going to look different this year. But if you’re thinking to yourself, “It’s going to be just another boring Zoom meeting,” think again. Yes, WAM will mostly be virtual, but several events will be interactive, family-friendly and create fun opportunities for the community to connect. There will be an in-person treasure hunt around the neighborhood, a wine tasting with a trio of wines you can order ahead of the event and a cooking class to benefit the Emerson Avenue Community Garden. WAM co-founder and producer, John Sharpe, a self-described “tree hugger” and “communityspirited person,” thought he’d have to cancel the event this year due to coronavirus, but at the

Abby Posner, Jessie Payo, Lucy Clearwater and LA pop duo RAINNE play WAM Remixed’s virtual stage on Saturday (Sept. 12) urging of one of his committee members, he realized the community needs WAM more than ever in 2020. “As our lives become more digital,” says Sharpe, “there’s more of a need to really connect – to have real, tangible connections.” Sharpe admits he produces WAM almost as much for himself as for the community.

“There’s so much negativity out there and if I get swallowed up by the things that make me crazy, the only solution I have is to do something positive for somebody. That’s kind of my psychotherapy. I do this because I love it and it gives me a lot of peace in a turbulent time,” he says. Here’s what to expect from

Streamlining the ‘Supply Chain’

Santa Monica College math major creates website that connects health care pros with much-needed PPE By Dev Jaiswal and Christina Campodonico His passions span derivatives, coding and service. Fifteen-year-old Santa Monica College math major Max Steinberg has used his interest in computer programming to join the fight against the coronavirus. Inspired by a story from a close relative, he has created a website, called Supply Chain, to help medical professionals secure more personal protective equipment. “When I heard that my close relative was going to work in a scuba mask, I was really surprised because his hospital couldn’t get him the PPE that would help him be safe while doing his job,” Max told The

I N

T H E

Supply Chain creator Max Steinberg, 15, at SMC Argonaut this spring. “And I thought that we have to do something about that, that can’t keep happening.” Max estimates that he took somewhere between 100 and 200 hours to code the PPE website, making it his top

priority even above his college finals. Medical professionals seeking PPE can create an account on Max’s website and submit their request. Donors can then look on the main page of the website and see a map of all the hospitals near their location who are requesting more equipment. Hospital addresses are automatically verified for legitimacy using a Google Maps API function. “I want it to be able to help people and the faster it gets done, the more good it can do,” Max said. “Because, constantly the news is telling us that coronavirus is spreading exponentially. And the more we can do earlier, it’ll have an exponentially better impact.”

Dave Steinberg, Max’s father, said it has been difficult to track exactly how much the website is helping the community. They can see how requests from different hospitals change over time, but they don’t have a system that pinpoints the exact number. The hospital that Max’s relative works at, however, has received “quite a few” supplies, according to Dave. “The downside is that we don’t know how many people have donated to all of the hospitals so far,” Dave said. Max says he taught himself how to program. The interest started at a young age and flourished into a side business even before this project was conceived.

“I have a website where I do coding solutions,” Max said. “I just do programming for projects that people need me to do.” His work has included helping a UCLA law professor transition to a new website and doing database management for a law firm. He markets himself with the slogan “You can expect the professional skills of an adult for the price of a teenager.” Max is happy that he can help people with this project. He hopes to transfer to UCLA in 2021 and has considered pursuing graduate studies in computer science. Visit covid.structbuilders.com to learn more.

No Res Gourmet Feeds the Homeless with Epicurean Flourish By Dev Jaiswal Burritos. Sandwiches. Leftovers. Local Firas Ayyad noticed that these meals most commonly comprise the food drive donations made to Los Angeles’s unhoused population. When thinking about what his own food initiative could look like, he wanted to break out of the box and give those facing hardship an elevated dining experience. “We make meals to distribute to the homeless around the area,” said Ayyad, CEO of the Marina del Rey-based nonprofit No Res Gourmet. “But the concept that would differentiate it is that it’s a gourmet meal.” The group cooks up recipes like Tuscan chicken stew, triple berry cheesecake, chocolate hazelnut cream pie and Moqueca fish stew. Ayyad explained that gourmet meals are usually inaccessible to those that are unhoused because they require money, reservations and special attire. But Ayyad wants to change that and make healthy, thoughtfully-made food more equitable. He did his first gourmet meal distribution on Christmas Eve

2019 and has been doing so every week since. No Res Gourmet runs off volunteers — usually three to four every week — and donations, which can be made on its website. One hundred percent of donations go toward food costs, as operational costs are kept separate. Ayyad decides on the menu each week, and volunteers cook, package and distribute the meals with him. Food is made with health and sustainability in mind, using local produce and groceries. It’s served in recyclable or biodegradable containers with sustainable silverware. No Res Gourmet averages making about

100 meals per week. Ayyad cited the novel coronavirus as slowing down his cooking rate due to limitations in accessing commercial kitchens and partnering with shelters. Still, his goal is to provide 20,000 meals in 2020. “I would love to reach out to more local organizations here, either restaurants that want to collaborate or sponsors that can either donate or help with the effort in any way,” Ayyad said. This year, No Res Gourmet has partnered with one organization that provides breakfast for those living in a San Diego homeless shelter. Ayyad said that figuring out how to maximize the impact

“When I distribute gourmet meals, they are surprised and they say, ‘Hey, you made this for me? Like you took the time to make this for me?’ … And they kind of feel a sense of hope, like somebody cares and they’re not so disconnected from the rest of us.” —Firas Ayyad, CEO No Res Gourmet of his work has been difficult. Restaurants, dinner parties, food festivals and live cook-a-thons are some ideas he has listed on the website for how to expand operations, and he is open to new ideas. Ayyad has worked in social activist roles for many years. He holds a Masters in International Affairs and Economics from UC San Diego and has spent time in Palestinian refugee camps in the West Bank through a United Nations college program. He shared what made his work with

No Res Gourmet satisfying earlier this summer. “When I distribute gourmet meals, they are surprised and they say, ‘Hey, you made this for me? Like you took the time to make this for me?’” Ayyad said. “And they kind of feel a sense of hope, like somebody cares and they’re not so disconnected from the rest of us.” Visit noresgourmet.com to learn more, make a donation or sign up to volunteer.

Winner Winner Ragu Dinner!

Make this simple and scrumptious supper for just $5 PHOTO BY AMY WATSKY

By Amy Watsky If you need to feed a bunch of people on a budget, this one’s for you. It costs just $5 to make but it tastes like a million bucks. I love a good ragù, or Italian meat sauce. Traditionally made with veal, beef and pancetta, ragù is a meaty red sauce that gets simmered over low heat until the flavors are melded together. For this recipe, I settled on $3-per-pound pork neck instead. It’s one of those cuts that no one really knows about, but it makes for the absolute best sauce. Ask your local butcher for a pound of these bones and they’ll know what you’re talking about. Trust me, you won’t regret it. Not only is this sauce $5, it requires very little energy on your part. All you have to do is sear the meat, throw in some smashed garlic, onions, canned tomatoes and a few seasonings and forget about it while it sits in the oven for six hours. When it comes out of the oven, the meat should be fall-apart tender; you’ll hardly believe this sauce came from pork necks. It’s the perfect work-from-home dish that anyone can make and afford. Now, my secret ingredient is a splash of soy sauce. This may sound really weird, but it brings out all of the umami and depth in the sauce — it just tastes better that way. My other secret ingredient is a parmesan rind that sits in the braise for the full six hours. My local store sells them for about $2 per container of rinds. It adds a subtle cheesy, nutty flavor that takes the sauce to another level. The rind is a

Pork neck is the secret to this pasta sauce key ingredient so don’t leave it out! I love serving this with fresh homemade pasta (instructions below), but feel free to accompany it with any type of pasta, bread or polenta. Not sure where to get pork necks? Check out Peads & Barnetts, a regular pork butcher at the Santa Monica Farmers Market. Order online and pick up on Wednesdays at the Wednesday Santa Monica Farmers Market.

For some imported pasta from Italy, check out Guidi Marcello in Santa Monica (1649 10th St.). Ingredients 1 pound of pork necks 1 64-ounce can of crushed tomatoes 3 cloves of garlic, smashed ½ cup red wine 1 yellow onion, sliced A splash of soy sauce 1 parmesan rind 1 bay leaf

leaf and shred the meat in the sauce. 5. Serve with pasta, bread or polenta. Bon appetite!

Salt, to taste Pepper, to taste Pasta 2 cups of flour ¼ cup of semolina flour ½ teaspoon of salt 1 egg Water 1. Preheat the oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Sear the pork necks until golden on all sides in a cast iron pot or any pot that can be put in the oven. 2. Take the pork necks out and set aside on a plate. Throw in the garlic and onions and let it brown for a few minutes. Pour in the tomatoes, wine, soy sauce, parmesan rind, bay leaf, salt, and pepper. Stir and place the pork necks back into the pot. 3. Pop the pot into the oven and let it simmer for about 6 hours, or until the pork necks are fall-apart tender. 4. Once it’s ready, remove the bones, parmesan rind, and bay

Pasta Instructions 1. Mix the flours and salt together. Once incorporated, make a well in the center. 2. Crack an egg into the well and start whisking with a fork. Gradually pour in some water until the mixture starts to come together. Knead for 10 minutes until smooth. The dough should feel like playdough. 3. Let it rest in the fridge. I made mine in the morning and let it rest until just before dinner, but if you’re in a rush, you can leave yours out on the counter for 30 minutes. 4. Roll out the dough either by hand or through a pasta machine and cut into shapes of your choosing. 5. Boil in salted water for 90 seconds to 2 minutes and mix it into the sauce. Voila!

Welcome Back!

Jerry’s Famous Deli returns to the marina with a fresh and flavorful new patio concept Jerry’s Patio Cafe & Bar 13181 Mindanao Way, Marina del Rey in the Villa Marina Marketplace Mall (310) 437-7600 jerryspatiocafe.com By Holly Jenvey Jerry’s Famous Deli, a Los Angelaes staple, has returned to its Marina del Rey location in Villa Marina Marketplace (formerly occupied by the short-lived Stark’s) reborn as Jerry’s Patio Cafe & Bar. Old favorites are still on the menu, but you can savor plenty of new dishes al fresco. Jerry’s Patio Cafe & Bar is one of three historic locations that are part of the Jerry’s Famous Deli chain. When the first location in Studio City opened in 1978, it became an instant favorite with celebrities and athletes because of its proximity to the studios, extensive list of comfort foods and amiable atmosphere. Now, that old Hollywood atmosphere has taken on a modern twist at Jerry’s Patio Cafe & Bar with flowing cocktails, a new menu catering to various dietary needs and a remodeled outdoor patio that will make you feel at home. When customers arrive, they’re greeted with pendant lamps and twinkle lights on a revamped patio that makes for a trendy yet inviting atmosphere. KICK THE HOBBIT My 23-year-old nephew is a nice guy, a college grad with a good job who’s a loving pet owner. The women in the family love his ironic mustache, his tattoos, and his way of making people laugh, but the men, including my husband, tend to see him in a negative light. I struggle to understand why they think so little of him. But maybe that’s it: My nephew’s not a big guy. He’s maybe 5-foot-6, and while that’s not terribly short, my family skews tall, with all the other men 6-foot-3 and over. From reading evolutionary theory in your books and columns, I’m wondering, might these men subconsciously dislike him because he’s small? If so, is there any way to get them to see him in a better light? — Concerned Aunt

Step Up for the Environment this September Coastal Cleanup Day happens all month long By Caden Sullivan Every year since 1985, residents of California have worked together to clean local waterways typically on the third Saturday of September. This international holiday is normally known as Coastal Cleanup Day, but due to the dangers of the pandemic, this year’s event is going to be different. 2020 is the first year in California’s history that all of September will be Coastal Cleanup Month. From the mountains to the sea, any site in LA County can be a cleanup spot. Also having a month of many small cleanups as opposed to one day of large gatherings should offer multiple advantages. More volunteers should be available to help, the ones who do will be sociallydistanced, and theoretically, more ground should be covered. The switch to Coastal Cleanup Month means residents can now pick their own time and place to go out and pick up trash. With this freedom of time and choice, nobody is going to miss the chance to volunteer because of work, school, or anything time-sensitive. Everyone can participate. The Ballona Wetlands are a particularly important site for Coastal Cleanup Day each year as 130 square miles of storm drain water flow into this habitat.

Since trash from all around Los Angeles can end up there, the Friends of Ballona Wetlands are asking Westchester locals to target this spot in their own Coastal Cleanup Week from Sept. 13 to 19. With the city on lockdown and many businesses at a halt, organizers are hoping that households can make it out at least once in September to do their part. If they can’t, there’s also a virtual webinar on Sept. 15 to educate locals on the importance of the wetlands’ restoration. More information on volunteering and attending the webinar is available at ballonafriends.org, where you can also make a donation. Heal the Bay will be focusing on waterways Sept. 12 through 18. Since there will be no organized in-person cleanups this year, register your DIY cleanup so that Heal the Bay can send you reminders and exclusive participant info to stay connected. Tag @healthebay and hashtag your cleanup posts on social with #coastalcleanupmonth, and be sure to bring your own mask, gloves, bucket and reusable water bottle. Visit healthebay.org/coastalcleanupmonth to learn more, register your clean up or check out additional Coastal Cleanup events happening throughout September.

Out of this World WiFi Starry, Inc. brings free ‘beamed’ internet to local families in need PHOTOS BY ZSUZSI STEINER

A team of Starry reps and their astronaut mascot deliver free internet and Chromebooks to residents of Mar Vista Gardens; free internet across the public housing complex unlocks a world of possibilities By Lydia You For Samantha Gomez, an internet connection is a creative conduit. As a resident of Mar Vista Gardens, a housing project located in Del Rey, and a film student at California State University, Northridge, she relies on fast and stable WiFi for almost every aspect of her life, including answering emails, attending online classes, and researching and collaborating on film projects. It wasn’t always that easy, though. When she was 7, Samantha and her family immigrated to South Central Los Angeles from El Salvador, where she found the language barrier and lack of resources to be particularly challenging. “Going to school was a bit of a nightmare for me,” she recalled, “As a child, since I didn’t have a computer, I had to type my assignments on a computer in the classroom… and if those didn’t work, I had to go to the library to finish typing up a paper, or to print out something. It was super difficult… and at the time, we didn’t even have internet.” The challenges of inadequate technology access are especially exacerbated in the age of the pandemic, in which we access everything from school to telehealth to entertainment through the web. In light of this, Starry, a wideband hybrid fiber wireless internet service provider, has recently

partnered with the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) to provide free internet access to over 600 households in local public housing complex Mar Vista Gardens until the end of 2020. They have also donated 21 Chromebooks to households in the complex identified as having inadequate device access, which a Starry astronaut mascot delivered on Aug. 15. “At our core, Starry’s mission is to connect as many people as possible to high-quality, affordable broadband,” said Virginia Lam Abrams, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs and Strategic Advancement at Starry. “With the COVID-19 health crisis, it’s really brought into much clearer focus how critical having broadband in the home is for everyone.” In June, Starry began its partnership with HACLA to provide ultra low-cost broadband internet for just $15/month to all residents of Mar Vista Gardens as part of its Starry Connect program, an initiative aimed to close the digital divide by providing those in affordable housing with low-cost internet plans. Starry Connect is unique in that it boasts “30 mbps symmetrical speeds, all in-home WiFi equipment and installation, and personalized customer care to all its subscribers for $15 per month,” according to a press

release on the program, an ultra low rate for a high-speed, broadband internet connection that normally ranges from $60 to $100 a month. Furthermore, Starry Connect does not require a long-term contract, credit checks, or other stringent individual requirements, lowering the barriers of access for families in need, and has guaranteed the fixed $15/month price for the next 5 years. “Just in a month they signed over 100 folks to that affordable broadband system,” said Joel Rogers, Resident Services Manager at HACLA. The decision to forego the monthly rate and provide free internet access to the entire housing project came on Aug. 24 as several major California school districts announced they would begin the school year online. The need for fast and stable internet is especially critical since 36% of the households in Mar Vista Gardens have school-aged children who will now spend much of their days on virtual learning platforms, according to HACLA. The Starry Connect program began in 2018, and has since provided low-cost, high-speed internet to over 16,000 units of public and affordable housing. Both HACLA and Starry Connect work with the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) ConnectHome-

USA program, an initiative started under the Obama administration to encourage private and public sectors to work together to close the digital divide in HUD-assisted housing. Specialized attention towards ensuring people in affordable housing have high-speed internet access — defined as fast connection, enough bandwidth, and a computer, laptop, or tablet — is especially important considering that “low-income households with school-age children are four times more likely to be without high-speed internet access than their middle-or-upper-income counterparts,” according to the Pew Research Center. Furthermore, studies show that families of color, particularly American Indian, Black and Hispanic households, are disproportionately underconnected, underlining the importance of providing accessible internet to residents across HACLA households, which are 76.90% Hispanic and 19.77% Black/African American. Starry is able to pursue partnerships with affordable housing projects and keep their costs low due to their innovative wireless technology. Starry’s unique wireless technology allows the company to “beam internet through the sky as fast as fiber,” according to its website, through an innovative antenna that can be mounted on top of radio towers and buildings without having to

tear up streets for cabling. Starry’s receivers pick up the signal from the “Starry Beam” and “plug into the building’s existing wiring to deliver internet to the router in your home,” which “blankets” the home in low cost, high-speed internet. “They are a new player...they were installing these antennae in high rise buildings and they were able to shoot their signal in different directions to other buildings,” said Rogers. “It was very innovative because it doesn’t require a lot of wiring, it was not as invasive as cabling or installing fiber optics and hence not as expensive, and the added advantage was that it was 5G, and that came with the promise of more bandwidth with no caps.” “Our technology is our advantage and we use that technology advantage to be able to serve every community,” said Abrams. Starry’s partnership with HACLA is just one step closer towards figuring out the digital equity puzzle that ensures all people — including school children, working-class citizens, and parents — have the resources they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world. “I feel like we’re one of the lucky communities...during the pandemic. We’ve all had our basic necessities met, including technology,” Gomez remarked.
