Breweries and wineries will be required to partner with third-party food vendors, mandate reservations at first and operate at limited capacity. Card table players will be required to wear

face masks at all times and cannot eat or drink at the tables. Supervisor Janice Hahn, whose district includes Marina del Rey, put forward the motion: “It was important for me that we started having these discussion[s] in open session,” Hahn told The Los Angeles Daily News. Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, whose district includes Venice, voted against the motion. “The decision on wineries and breweries was made against the guidance of our Director of Public Health,” Kuehl said in a statement. “I voted no because I honestly don’t feel that it’s safe to open these places; there was no need to take this action this week and I would have preferred more public discussion and further discussion with Dr. Ferrer.” (via Los Angeles Daily News) • The County Board of Supervisors also voted unanimously on Tuesday to allow LA County schools to apply for reopening waivers. Up to 30 waivers will be approved per week equally among the county’s five school districts, with priority given to schools serving the greatest percentages of low-income students on free or reduced meal programs. Venice on the Brink Having resided in Venice for nearly 28 years, I am not a “local” per say, but someone who has witnessed much, especially the downfall and exile of the middle class while crime and homelessness surge here in Venice! It is a peculiar situation when home sales and rental properties vastly increase in value and price, while crime, and violent crime in particular, spike as well. Traditionally speaking, an increase in the value of residential housing stock generally leads to a reduction in crime, which was the

case initially about a decade ago. But because of the failed homelessness initiatives by LA, and in particular Mayor Eric Garcetti and Councilman Mike Bonin, this epidemic now wrapped up in a pandemic has Venetians wondering: Will Venice ever recover? While COVID-19 is a clear agitator to the current local conditions, the homelessness population has increased to levels so out of control that the Venice boardwalk, which was once the pride of living here in this urban beach enclave, is now ground zero for theft, robbery, rape and murder. The false proposition that the increase of homelessness and encampments is not at the source of this violence is a narrative of our elected officials, who refuse to acknowledge the failures of bridge housing or the vote of “no confidence,” made by the Venice Neighborhood Council (VNC) and failure of both Garcetti and Bonin to work with the local Venice community to turn things around. It really doesn’t matter where you reside in Venice, for the spike in homeless and the inability to control the increase in encampments continues with a blind

stamp of approval by both the Mayor and our Council member. These failed policy initiatives are now coming to fruition as LAPD has been ostracized and polarized by the defunding of their operating budget, further alienating a reliable public safety component residents should expect. Instead, you have a sitting councilman playing politics with public safety as crime spirals out of control at the beach and more closures of businesses that rely on tourism and foot traffic at the beach [struggle to] survive economically! For now, you have a boardwalk in dire need of cleaning as the encampments mount, the seedy usage of drugs continues and a sense the boardwalk has been co-opted by these transient criminals who refuse to adhere to any CDC guidelines regarding transmission of COVID-19. In fact, both Mayor Garcetti and Councilman Bonin use the pandemic as a reason to promote a false narrative that cleaning the boardwalk and bringing some sense of normalcy back to Venice is the wrong thing to do!... The rage and anger of Venice residents just doesn’t [seem to]

matter, and that voice must be shut down in the eyes of Garcetti and Bonin. For these tactics are usually attributed to Orwellianstyle dogma or the current occupant of the White House, not those who calls themselves liberal or progressive! So one might ask, why are our elected officials acting in such a non-productive fashion unsupportive of the needs of the Venice community? Why are drug addicts, transients, alcoholics and the mentally unstable who roam the streets of Venice and encamp in filthy conditions now described as “new neighbors?” While these detached city officials rage on about the President, all politics as they say is local. And all locals want is a return to some semblance of a crime-free Venice in which one can walk a dog or go to a grocery market and not be accosted by the homeless, who see this new normal as, in fact, just fine! For our Mayor as well as our Councilman are AWOL, nowhere to be found within the confines of Venice, never at the beach or boardwalk monitoring the human catastrophe created on their

collective watches and the obvious suppression of opinion that is counter to the fallacies of addressing these issues in a serious or productive manner. There is a reason that in the last two years Bonin’s office has been a revolving door of bureaucrats who have no answers for Venetians and just serve as a political buffer to relieve him of the obvious issues as hand. It is a dysfunctional and senseless relationship that needs to be mended and repaired, but that takes these elected officials removing the rose-colored glasses and being truthful and honest with their constituents as well as themselves. Sincerely, Nick Antonicello Venice The writer is a volunteer member of the Outreach, Parking and Oceanfront Committee’s of the Venice Neighborhood Council.

Calling Die-hard ‘Pretty Little Liars’ Fans

The moms of the popular teen drama have their own podcast! PHOTO COURTESY OF PRETTY LITTLE WINE MOMS

By Katherine Brubaker The hit television show “Pretty Little Liars” came to an end three years ago when the identity of the infamous and feared “A” was revealed. But the actresses who played the mothers of the show’s angsty teens have recently reunited to make a podcast series, “Pretty Little Wine Moms”(PLWM). And yes, they sometimes drink wine during the show! Lesley Fera, who played Veronica Hastings on PLL, and her husband Ned Mochel have their own podcast, “Homeward Bound: Surviving the Coronavirus.” Fera asked her previous co-stars from PLL to be on an episode, including Santa Monica resident Nia Peeples, who’s known for her roles on shows such as “Fame” and “Walker Texas Ranger” and played Pam Fields on PLL. According to Peeples, this episode was “wildly popular,” so Fera suggested that they

‘Pretty Little Liars’ alums Nia Peeples, Holly Marie Combs and Lesley Fera co-host the new podcast born out of quarantine ‘Pretty Little Wine Moms’ make a separate podcast together, which became PLWM. In this series of conversations, Holly Marie Combs (who played Ella Montgomery), Fera and Peeples rewatch and discuss episodes from PLL. (The TV series is now available on HBO Max.) Their conversations on plot and character development tend to digress

outside of the fictional world and into discussions on life. “It rolls off into these conversations that are sometimes hilarious anecdotes, and some of them are incredibly poignant. We turn this into the Sidecar Conversations, and on The Rosewood Clubhouse website, you can go and listen to those little conversations. And that to

me, is where the real magic happens,” said Peeples, referencing the podcast’s Patreon fan club page. Though these actresses worked on the same show together for seven years, they rarely had screen time together. “We are really just becoming friends. We only worked on the show together twice — the moms

were rarely together, and we have definitely gotten to know each other better now,” said Peeples. Not only has the podcast strengthened the friendships between these women, Peeples believes that the show gives something back to viewers. “I think it’s really important right now, everyone is looking for somewhere to turn not just for distraction, but for normalcy,” said Peeples. The podcast has also made Peeples finally watch the show in its entirety. Peeples explained that while filming PLL, she couldn’t keep updated on the series’ oftentimes confusing plot lines. “The fans would have to tell me what was going on in the show!” Peeples added with a laugh. Peeples, who’s also a children’s book author, joined PLWM because of the approach she now takes with all her

Combs, Fera and Peeples pair their interviews on the show with beverages of their choice projects, which is to do things from a place of “inspired action.” This inspired action is in part found in the company of her fellow hosts. “My favorite part of [the podcast] is experiencing women when they are at a time in their lives where they know who they are. I have found that

as a woman, it’s not easy to find who you are, let alone who you are in the face of other women. People are just figuring out who they are, and you eventually get to a place in your life where you know who you are a little more, and then you can stand in it, and the women around you can stand in theirs with no

judgment,” said Peeples. Peeples also appreciates the feeling of safety the podcast environment has provided her, which has allowed for authentic conversations. “Oftentimes, especially growing up in the public eye, you are aware people are watching you. This is a space where you can really

be yourself — you can complain about your kids and everyone knows that you are just having a moment. The girls are able to put it down on the table uncensored,” said Peeples. PLWM recently got a sponsorship with HBO Max, and they are currently considering a second season. Upcoming

guests for this season include: PLL writer, director and executive producer Joe Dougherty on Oct. 14; Sasha Pieterse on Oct. 21, who played the mysterious missing ‘Liar’ Alison DiLaurentis; and actress Lucy Hale on Oct. 28, who played core ‘Liar,’ Aria Montgomery, with artsy flair on the show’s seven seasons. Peeples for one is excited to see where the podcast goes and where it takes her in her development as a creative artist. “The question for me now is can I continue expressing in this space, without limiting myself. Can we allow it to evolve? Can I allow it to evolve with me? Otherwise, I’m not being honest,” said Peeples. As for Peeples’ beverage of choice during the show: “I love gin, gin and tonic, with a little cucumber and lime, or red wine!” Visit prettylittlewinemoms.com to learn more and listen. Singing for the Planet Westchester duo Joselyn & Don celebrate love’s healing power and address the universal threat of climate change with debut album ‘Soar’ PHOTOS BY CHRISTOPHER GALLO

By Bliss Bowen It’s been almost 20 years since Joselyn Wilkinson and Don Barrozo met and bonded at a jam in Venice. During that time they married, raised a family, and supported each other’s creative projects. Wilkinson, a music educator and musician who founded the celebratory female-vocal-and-drum ensemble ADAAWE, played percussion on Barrozo’s trumpet-driven 2005 album “Blue Talk”; Barrozo, a longtime editor for “The Simpsons,” produced and created horn arrangements for Wilkinson’s 2010 solo album “Chance for Rain.” But not until recently did they formalize their collaboration as a folk-rooted musical duo. Over the past year they’ve occasionally tried out new songs onstage, such as the soulfully percussive “Broken” and “Wayfarer’s Son,” and they

“Soar.” The opening track is “Storm,” a dramatic ballad Wilkinson says she wrote when wildfires were devastating Sonoma County in 2018. Its lyrics eerily echo the plight of many wildfire, hurricane and flood refugees across the country in 2020, and brings to mind the ongoing Angeles National Forest’s Bobcat Fire, which turned Southern California skies orange for weeks, and current fires in California wine country. “Where do I run to when paradise is burning Scorching the hills of the home I used to know How do we hold on with the flood water rising Where do we go now that the storm has reached our shore” The visually striking video for “Storm,” shot by Wilkinson’s

GRAND OPENING!!! Dr. Parsons is back in Westchester!!

When not playing music together, Joselyn plays in the female vocal-drum ensemble ADAAWE & Don is an editor on “The Simpsons” brother, Oakland-based filmmaker Spencer Wilkinson, shows them performing on the rugged shores of Montaña de Oro State Park along the Central California coastline. Those scenes are interspersed with stock footage of a prairie rainstorm and smoke arising from a massive fire. Taking a metaphorical rather than literal approach allowed them to “embrace that universal threat that we’re all facing” from climate change, Wilkinson said during a recent phone call. “I wanted to fill out the story, and I wanted images that weren’t literal, that were more metaphorical,” Barrozo explained. “I didn’t want to use footage of California fires; we’re so inundated with those images.” They’re utilizing the video for “Storm” as a tool of support for firefighters and other first responders who’ve become modern-day heroes for citizens up and down the West Coast. A note posted on YouTube with the video directs viewers to California Fire Foundation (cafirefoundation.org) and GlobalGiving — California Wildfire (globalgiving.org/ california-wildfires). “It’s not an ongoing campaign, but we wanted to shine a light on the efforts of those two organizations. When folks are looking for a way to make a meaningful contribution, we wanted to provide those links to groups doing powerful advocacy work,” Wilkinson said. “California Fire Foundation is giving direct gift cards to families affected by the fires, as well as families of fallen firefighters. GlobalGiving — California Wildfire is doing direct support for firefighters and supplying emergency supplies to people in need.” Videos for other songs from “Soar” further underscore how vital nature is to the duo’s creativity. The video for “All It Takes Is Time” was shot just outside Malibu Creek State Park, while the lyric video for “Mama Bird” celebrates the connections bonding all living things. “Our identity and musical inspiration is tied very closely with the natural world,”

Wilkinson said. “‘Mama Bird’ speaks to my connection with other mothers but acknowledges that we have more in common with creatures in nature than we realize.” Barrozo and Wilkinson lived in Venice and Marina del Rey for many years before settling into their Westchester home, but both are natives of Montana, where they return each year. That background gives them a broader view of the existential changes being wrought by the climate crisis. “The glaciers in Glacier National Park are receding at a real fast rate — almost gone. They’ll be gone within our lifetimes,” Barrozo said. “I’ve never seen green grass in winter in Montana until this year.” “We’ve seen massive changes in our lifetime,” Wilkinson agreed. “The farther north you go, the more you notice climate change affecting landscape in a very real way. When I was growing up, we had winters where we had cold snaps of 50 degrees below 0 for weeks at a time. We don’t have those kinds of winters anymore. It’s not that you don’t ever get those kinds of conditions, but we’ve seen the climate change right before our eyes.” That sensitivity to the environment informs “Storm” and other songs on “Soar,” just as their rhythmic buoyancy tinges them with hope. It’s one of the reasons Joselyn & Don pushed ahead with their album release plans after initially putting them on hold. “We felt it was important to go ahead and release it this year,” Wilkinson said of “Soar.” “Even though some of the songs are about challenging subjects overall, they have an uplifting quality and we felt like this music is right from our hearts. We wanted to offer it out to our world, even during a time that’s more challenging — or because of that — and see if it can be a force for healing.”

Modern California Steakhouse Bull & Butterfly Opens in Playa Vista From the owners of Lemonade comes a meaty new, al fresco experience PHOTOS BY VICTORIA PEARSON

Chef Robbie Nowlin (Otium) leading the kitchen, this California steakhouse has a modern, coastal vibe that’s sure to impress Silicon Beach’s tech-heads. In the wake of COVID-19, the traditional steakhouse has been forced to adapt to al fresco sensibilities and Bull & Butterfly has done so surprisingly well. The Jacksons had the foresight to build two patio areas, one in front of the restaurant and one on the side.

“We built this before the pandemic, trying to be as much outside as we could,” said Heidi, who understands that people who live near the beach appreciate the sunny weather and love to be outdoors. The front restaurant walls are made of roll-up, garage-style doors that allow the inside to spill out into the open-air areas, connecting the entire restaurant. The menu features “Asada Style” steaks and meats along with the expected butcher-cut

steaks and chops, their proper names nodding to the cattle ranches and farms where the cuts of meat originated. Sides include “Charred Sprouting Broccoli” and “Ember Roasted Sweet Potato.” Be sure to order the “Warm Wagon Wheel Bacon Biscuits” with housesmoked butter, to complete the indulgence. But it’s the menu’s less traditional dishes that really tempt the palate. Smoked Spanish octopus, pickled

Hand-crafted cocktails with clever names include the “Dove Gone Love Song,” made of Casa Noble Crystal, El Silencio Espadin, grapefruit, tarragonclove syrup and soda, and the “Passengers Only,” made from Sacred Bond Brandy, orange and apricot liqueurs and lemon. The restaurant’s house Prickly Pair, comprised of Tito’s vodka, cucumber, aloe liqueur and lime, is available on tap. Inside the new eatery, seafoam green accents in the natural wood décor pair beautifully with the pink neon butterfly that matches servers’ pink buttondown shirts. The gorgeous horseshoe bar is accented by a colorful chandelier seemingly constructed of natural materials. Alas, it may be some time before patrons can fraternize at the bar, but this one is so inviting, it’s worth the wait.

PAGE-TURNING POWER By Julia Escobar Since the late 1970s, the percentage of 12th graders who said they read a book or magazine almost every day for pleasure has dropped from 60% to 16%, according to a study published by the American Psychology Association. With online schooling becoming the norm and COVID-19 creating an even larger socioeconomic gap between books and teens, it’s a problem that needs to be addressed. Teen Readers Society, a new Santa Monica-based nonprofit, is passionate about changing young adults’ reading habits. The nonprofit group has created the space and initiatives to get teenagers to fall back in love with reading through engaging programs and marketing. Judit Langh, a mother of two teenagers, founded Teen Readers Society after she began to notice this lack of engagement with books for fun within her own household. Her daughters weren’t reading books for pleasure the way they used to when they were young children, even though they’re very bright and politically engaged individuals. This prompted Langh to begin her endeavor to learn about this concerning decline, and eventually be a part of the change. “I feel that there is a lot of emphasis on reading for younger

children,” Langh says. “And there’s also numerous book clubs for middle-aged women, but really no emphasis on teenagers. Somehow this age group has been neglected.” Langh explains that while adolescent students are expected to read mandatory books in school, they are also asked to take an analytical approach to the stories, making it almost impossible to get “lost in a book,” which is one of the joys of reading for pleasure. Lili Ignon, a teen herself and TRS’s Social Media and Campaign Manager, saw this decline among her own peers. “I knew that it wasn’t just ‘a me’ problem,” Ignon says. “Especially my peers and my friends going to high school and being in classes such as AP Literature. People would have a hard time finding motivation to read.” Reading isn’t seen as “trendy” nowadays, but there is no doubt that reading can have benefits beyond leisurely or escapist pleasure for one’s self. According to a research report published by the National Endowment for the Arts, 84% of proficient readers voted in the 2000 presidential election while only 53% of “below basic” readers voted. With seven million Americans turning 18 every two years, Teen Readers Society’s initiative to reverse the decline in reading

rates is relevant now more than ever, especially amidst a contentious election year. The sad reality of it is that the culture of reading books is disappearing; with the prominent growth of the internet and social media, books have a lot of competition. “We want to bring reading into the new norm,” Ignon says. “There’s this stereotype that kids who read a lot of books nowadays, they’re the outsiders, loners or so-called ‘nerds’ because, unfortunately, teens have a big problem with image. We would like to change the narrative of reading and change the image of reading into something that is more positive for every other teen.” And TRS is doing just that. Their most popular and successful campaign so far that directly brings books to teens is “Blind Date with a Book,” intended to introduce teens to a whole new world of literature through a mystery book. Teens fill out a Google form telling TRS about a book genre that interests them, and a book that fits that genre will be sent to the teen. With close to 200 requests for “Blind Date with a Book,” it brings hope and solace to the nonprofit that they can and are changing the narrative of reading for young adults. “We always thought this idea would be popular, but the positive

GO WITH THE WHOA

Founder Judit Langh and TRS’s teen ambassadors use social media, contests and book giveaways to engage teens in reading reactions and excitement evident in direct messages have exceeded our expectations,” Langh says. “We think this supports our idea that it is indeed entirely possible to get teens excited about books when this is done in a compelling way, here with an element of playfulness and mystery. It also tells us that there are many teens who do not have easy access to the books they want to read.” TRS recognizes that being able to even purchase a book is a privilege, especially during the current financial insecurities caused by the coronavirus pandemic across the nation. “Wish to Read” is their second initiative to bring books to those who may not have the means to buy one. By partnering with independent bookstores, TRS will donate books to teenagers in any part of the country who reach out to them via their website asking for a book that they do not have access to free of charge. Teen Readers Society is rooted in working to combat the negative narrative of reading for young adults by providing a multitude of ways to get them back into reading and using means to which teens are receptive. TRS’s rapidly growing community on Instagram is reaching teens from all over the world at the click of a button. The account @teenreaderssociety (run by Ignon) is a haven for teens to explore all aspects and subjects through books. As you swipe through TRS’s feed, you’ll see a plethora of book recommendations on topics about which teens are passionate — from LGBTQ+ issues to black empowerment to sex, climate change and graphic novels. TRS even has teen ambassadors who share their favorite books and give brief descriptions about them. Along with providing teens book recommendations, the group has created collaborative ways for teens to engage in conversations about books. Earlier this year, the group held an “Art through Literature” contest to which young visual artists could submit artwork inspired by books they had read. TRS’ IGTV series “Teen Book Chats” is also a space for anyone to talk about a book they absolutely love or maybe aren’t a big fan of to spark exciting conversations within the online teen community. “It’s really important for other teens to read about other teens’ recommendations because ultimately if your friend recommends something to you, you’re going to

take that a lot more to heart than if your mom or your dad did,” Ignon says. TRS is also very globally aware of the books they recommend and the people they showcase. Their Instagram series of “What the World Reads” gives teens a glimpse of what other young adults are reading from around the world. Their global teen ambassadors from Brazil and France have recommended books that are typically read by teens from the literary canon of their home countries. “We are trying to be very global,” Langh says. “We feel that it is such a global world and teenagers don’t really look at the world within countries anymore. We are embracing everyone from any country.” More recently, TRS has focused its efforts closer to home, refocusing its book donation efforts to help teens who have lost or are losing their homes in California or Oregon wildfires. Through the help of a generous global publisher, Langh says, the organization “will be able to give out a large number (in the thousands) of books in these areas most affected by the fires.” A writing contest for aspiring authors and a magazine for teens and young people interested in books, arts, culture, literature and travel are also in the works, along with initiatives focused on the mental health benefits of books and helping teens in less affluent areas whose education has been disrupted in 2020. TRS hopes in the future to partner with larger companies and brands with teenage demographics to embed books and reading into mainstream culture to reach more teens with their programs and campaigns. The primary goal is to make reading an empowering and expressive pursuit for teens. “During these historic and turbulent times and with schools operating online, teens are hungry for engagement and opportunities to create and share their art,” says Langh. “We believe that teenagers do have the power, and it really works best if they take things in their hands. … So we’re trying to give them everything they need to create conversations to help themselves become better readers and drive others who are not readers and turn them into readers.” Visit teenreadersociety.org to learn more or make a donation to the group’s fire relief book donation efforts. THE ARGONAUT REAL ESTATE Q&A

What are the real estate propositions in this November’s ballot? (Part 2) As if we aren’t already overwhelmed with the drama of the coming elections, we’ve got propositions to educate ourselves on. This column is a continuation from last week, providing you with some basic information on the three real estate related propositions on the upcoming ballot- we discussed Prop 19 which attempts to provide more flexibility for seniors to sell and buy real estate without an unaffordable jump in property taxes. Today we will look at Propositions 15 & 21. Prop 15, just like Prop 19, seeks to modify the rules of our existing Prop 13. As background, “Prop 13” is the beloved California tax break for homeowners, allowing you to keep your property taxes low, based on the value at time of purchase, only rising up to 2% per year, regardless of dramatic increases in value.

Should Prop 15 pass it would institute a process to gradually have many commercial and industrial properties taxed according to market value of those properties rather than having those taxes permanently linked to its purchase price. The target of these changeslarge corporations with significant holdings that have taken advantage of their artificially low assessed values for decades. While huge companies like Disney benefit as currently allowed, many companies also have found loopholes to avoid reassessment through complex business structures that make it appear that property has not been sold, to avoid triggering new tax.

Those who have owned their property longer have an undeniable edge over new businesses. Two identical properties may be next door to each other with significantly different property tax expenses.
