Pet Pawty

Local event promotes community, charity and local business By Kamala Kirk ecent, Los Angelesbased pet brands, PetSwapp and TukkaMate, hosted the 1st Annual Pet Pawty at Pan Pacific Park to celebrate the local community of pet owners. The event, which included a raffle worth over $2,000 and a pet costume contest on the red carpet, raised money for four local charities: The Labelle Foundation, West LA Animal Shelter, Boomer’s Buddies Rescues and Comfy Carepacks. The first place winner of the costume contest was Lala, a 5-yearold shelter dog at the West LA Shelter. The brands participating in the raffle included TukkaMate, Mr. Speck’s Playhouse, Skoon Cat Litter, Saylor Pet

Illustration, Nutrix Piu’, DogTV, ModernBeast, Pet Releaf, Annie Brown and Tootsie Jewelry. Treats for humans and furry friends were provided by Party with Plants and Fatamorgana Gelato. A DJ also played music throughout the event while attendees enjoyed playing with a rescue litter of puppies that had been brought by The Labelle Foundation. “PetSwap is all about community and connecting like-minded people, so it is exciting to see our community of pet owners come together to support such good organizations,” said Arianna Jacchia, co-founder of PetSwapp. “My hope is for everyone to have a fun Sunday and learn about the awesome brands that are

participating.” PetSwapp is a user-friendly app that matches pet owners looking to pet swap when needed, providing an efficient alternative to expensive or unsafe pet caring practices. TukkaMate is an Australian brand of healthy, human grade dog food that was carefully developed with a holistic veterinarian and is dedicated to making sure that their food products are fully transparent and kept simple. Brooke Mason, founder of TukkaMate, added, “I’m excited for our Pet Pawty! UOVO MARINA DEL REY

The beloved Bay Area-based Jewish deli recently opened its first Southern California location in Culver City. After starting as a popup in 2011, Wise Sons opened its first brick-and-mortar restaurant in San Francisco in 2012 and now has seven locations in California, in addition to one in Tokyo. Founded by brothers Ari and Evan Bloom, alongside Leo Beckerman, Wise Sons serves up California-inspired Jewish deli foods that pay homage to Los Angeles’ iconic delis through the food it serves and the restaurant design. The Culver City location was designed by creative director Danny Gonzalez and combines a clean, modern aesthetic with a sense of nostalgia. The walls feature framed family photos, vintage-style pennants and a colorful deli mural scene by illustrator Alexandra Bowman. Wise Sons uses the highest-quality ingredients including hardwoodsmoked pastrami and house-baked bagels, bialy and buttery babka filled with Guittard chocolate. Other favorites on the menu range from The OG Reuben, Matzo Ball Soup made with organic chicken broth, and Potato Latkes to naturally fermented sour pickles, the Classic Smoked Salmon Bagel, and the Bodega Egg & Cheese Sandwich served on bagel or bialy. Also unique to the Culver City location is a classic Tuna Melt with wild albacore tuna, lettuce, tomato and horseradish aioli griddled with American and Swiss cheese on rye bread. BEST BRAND WITH PURPOSE: MY HAND IN YOURS Founded in 2019 by award-winning actress and Westside resident, Jamie Lee Curtis, My Hand in Yours is a line of items that are designed to provide comfort, love and support. For years, Curtis has always said, “My hand in yours,” to others when she knows they are going through a tough time or need extra love. She was inspired to launch the brand after COVID-19 hit, as she realized that it would help comfort others during the global crisis. From blankets and pillows to intention stones and journals, all of the items are designed and hand made by artists that have been selected by Curtis including sculptor Anne Ricketts, who created the best-selling “Together” sculpture, a miniature set of clasped hands cast in bronze. Every purchase comes with a frameable card that features an inspirational handwritten message by Curtis, who also writes notes for customers when they send items as gifts to loved ones. 100 percent of the proceeds from all purchases go to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, a nonprofit institution that Curtis has been a spokeswoman for and worked in partnership with. Yoga-urt brings plant-based soft serve to Santa Monica COURTESY OF YOGA-URT

Plant-based soft serve shop Yoga-urt recently opened its third and newest location in Santa Monica.

By Kamala Kirk lant-based soft serve shop Yoga-urt launched a soft opening on October 9 followed by a grand opening celebration on October 16 for its third and newest location in Santa Monica. The new location is twice the size of its Echo Park store and will feature seven to 10 rotating flavors on tap for customers to choose from. “Aside from being close to the ocean, I am really looking forward to simply being connected with the people that make up this beautiful community,” said Yoga-urt founder Melissa Schulman. “Something that I love about having Yoga-urt is that I get to meet so many new individuals every day.” Yoga-urt was founded in 2015 by Schulman, who decided to take a sabbatical from her corporate position as a project manager and began

P

a yoga teacher training to focus on her health and yoga. At the time, she fell in love with her practice and also learned that there weren’t many frozen yogurt alternatives that were plant based and carried the nutritional probiotic benefits of yogurt. “I wanted to create a healthier soft serve that could be enjoyed with one’s community and tasted great,” Schulman said. “After doing a lot of research and seeking guidance, I found myself inspired to create a space that embodied the same peaceful vibe you get when you walk into a yoga studio, but served delicious and healthful soft serve.” All of Yoga-urt’s soft serve is made in house and from scratch every day. All of their soft serve starts off with their hand squeezed almond and cashew milk base, and they use the freshest all-organic ingredients including four

gut-essential probiotic strains. Some of their most popular rotating flavors include Chocolate Bliss, Peanut Butter Prana, Strawberry Serenity, naturally sweetened Sweet Greens, and Radiant Golden Rose, among others. “We also happen to be the first soft serve shop in Los Angeles to serve all plantbased soft serve that is all organic and gut-friendly because of our added probiotics, plus the taste is delicious,” Schulman said. “The goal has always been to have many stores, but right now we are so excited to open our third store in Santa Monica and maybe one day go wholesale with our pints.” Yoga-urt 1700 Santa Monica Blvd., Santa Monica 424-581-6088 yoga-urt.com

beers,” Daryl said. The beer list features several mainstays and imports, mainly focusing on local West Coast craft brewers. Many brands and types of beer are available to choose from, including sour beer. Different beers are added weekly and several Oktoberfest beers are currently on tap. While enjoying a meal, customers are encouraged to sample different beers and wines to taste the differences and nuances in each brand and style, and to see how they pair with the food. Highlights from the fresh seafood menu include lobster, snapper, Santa Barbara sea urchin, oysters and salmon. Non-seafood options range from Pork Knuckles and Pan Roast Jidori Chicken to a gourmet cheeseburger, along with many delicious salads and pastas. Other dishes to try include the hand-breaded, beer-battered Fish n Chips; Pink Hawaiian Snapper with citrus supremes and housemade pistou, citrus vinaigrette and sauce veracruz; and the Santa Carota Farms Ribeye Steak. The rotating menu changes according to Fullilove’s vision and what is in season. Happy hour is available Monday to Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. with 20 percent off a limited menu. A limited sunset menu is offered on Saturday and Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m., and brunch is served on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dishes to try from the brunch menu include the Lobster Benedict, Avocado Toast, Vegan Blueberry Pancakes and the Breakfast Sandwich. Located two blocks from the beach and Venice Fishing Pier, Beach & Brew’s menu is headed by Chef Jason Fullilove, featuring local ingredients and fresh seafood. A rising star in his own right, Fullilove has been featured on Food Network’s “Beat Bobby Flay” and previously worked for Michelin-starred Patina Restaurant Group and as executive chef for the late Beard-Award winner Mark Peel’s Los Angeles restaurants The Tar Pit and Campanile. “Our chef and his team like to use fresh ingredients and to prep and cook from scratch,” Daryl said. “The customers like that the food is fresh and sourced locally when possible.” Replacing Japanese restaurant Kifune, Beach & Brew underwent a complete renovation. The space features a fresh and contemporary look with the addition of open windows in the front and exposing the high open-wood ceiling with cement floors for an open, urban loft feel. “Beach & Brew was positioned from the start to cater to the local customers,” Daryl said. “We wanted this location to be a go-to spot and a comfort zone for the locals.” Beach & Brew has a full-service liquor bar along with a self-serve 40 tap system, the only one in Venice. The self-serve taps offer different beers, hard kombuchas, hard cider, hard seltzers and California-coastal wines that customers can choose and pour themselves. “Our customers have asked for and prefer more craft

OSEA Venice Skincare Studio offers facials that harness seaweed’s nourishing powers By Sara Edwards fter starting her skincare line OSEA in 1996, years later Jenefer Palmer opened OSEA Venice Skincare Studio, the company’s flagship spa, in 2018. Located on Abbot Kinney Boulevard in a chic and light-filled space, OSEA Venice offers various facials that incorporate the brand’s skincare products that harness the beneficial properties of seaweed. “At the heart of OSEA is a fundamental belief in the nourishing powers of seaweed,” said Brooke Babcock, OSEA’s education manager and licensed esthetician. “We combine superfood seaweed with the best ingredients that nature has to offer to restore skin to its most youthful look and feel. Since 1996, OSEA has been clean, vegan and cruelty-free. A central tenet to our philosophy is that we’ve done it without artificial colors or dyes or questionable, synthetic ingredients.” OSEA Venice currently offers three luxury facials: Cranial Wave, a craniosacral

therapy facial that rejuvenates skin and mood while shifting the aura and replenishing energy; Deep Sea Age Defying, a firming facial that uses next-generation technologies to plump, lift and transform the skin; and Sculpt & Life Gua Sha, a sculpting facial that blends crystals with thermal and sound vibrational therapies to restore radiance. “Our most loved treatment is the Deep Sea Age Defying Facial, otherwise known as ‘The Fountain of Youth,’” Babcock said. “It’s a powerful age-defying facial that combines holistic methods with innovative technologies to lift, firm and transform the skin. We use a potent infusion of sea minerals and botanicals paired with therapeutic cranial touch therapy, lymphatic drainage massage, high-frequency and LED light therapy, to leave the skin amazingly radiant, firm and refreshed.” According to Babcock, OSEA facials target inflammation, clogged pores, signs of aging, dehydration, and seasonal skin changes and

challenges. The average cost for an OSEA facial treatment is $160 for a 50-minute session. Among the brand’s most popular products are the Undaria Algae Body Oil, which combines Undaria seaweed with 11 botanical oils for silky-soft skin that glows all over; and Hyaluronic Sea Serum, an award-winning serum that works to restore moisture levels using three molecular weights of hyaluronic acid and three supergood seaweeds for dewy, hydrated skin. “We recommend coming in at least once a month for maximum results, since on average, skin cells turn over about every 28 days,” Babcock said. “We make it easy for you with our studio membership program and you can book an appointment through our website.” OSEA Venice Skincare Studio 1732 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice (310) 985-1447 oseamalibu.com IMAGES COURTESY OF OSEA VENICE SKINCARE STUDIO

Playa Vista entrepreneur launches pet industry’s first employment search engine PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ

Playa Vista resident Seda Bolulu is the founder of PackHire, an employment search engine and recruiting firm exclusive to the pet industry. PAGE 32 THE ARGONAUT OCTOBER 21, 2021

By Srianthi Perera eda Bolulu was looking for a career transition combining her skills in talent acquisition and passion for animals. What the Playa Vista resident found was a niche in the business world. Bolulu noted that it was difficult to search for jobs in this particular field. Thus, while still in business school at the University of Southern California, she created a job board for the pet industry. “Through extensive market research we discovered that the name job boards created for the masses were not sufficiently catering to the rapidly growing $100B pet industry, and we wanted to build the platform where employers and candidates can easily and cost-efficiently find their pack,” Bolulu says. PackHire, the new employment search engine and recruiting firm exclusive to the pet industry, serves the pet-loving community through its online platform. The service is free to job seekers that may search employment opportunities in areas such as veterinary care, grooming/ boarding, dog training, rescues and nonprofits, pet food, retail, pet insurance and pet care start-ups. Employers pay to register and post jobs, search the candidate resume database, and work with industry expert recruiters to find quality candidates with niche backgrounds for their pet business. Bolulu has a decade of talent acquisition experience under her belt and her husband, Fadi Rasheed, is an employment attorney. “Creating an employment search engine between the two of us kind of made sense,” she notes. The couple hired technical expertise, such as web development, to fill the gaps in their knowledge. Funding was bootstrap. It is an opportune time for applications in the pet

S

industry. Pet ownership is at an all-time high. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates 23 million households acquired a pet during the pandemic. The spike in ownership has sparked the growth of innovative pet products and services. Research also showed Bolulu that investors had poured more than $2 billion of venture funding into global pet-focused startups since 2017. According to the business information platform, Crunchbase, 2 million jobs are available in the industry across the country. To match those needs, Bolulu discovered there was no one-stop-shop to search for employment. When Bolulu started searching for a talent acquisition manager position in the pet industry, the search results were “really bad,” she says. “They were inaccurate; a talent acquisition manager or marketing specialist search would get nursing home managers, event planners for a gentleman’s club — totally random things that were not in the pet industry or even loosely related,” Bolulu adds. She followed up with some quantitative market research and asked business owners in the pet industry questions such as: on how many job boards do they post their jobs, how many relevant resumes do they get for job postings and would they use a job board in the pet industry if it existed? Bolulu asked questions of her pet-loving family and friends. She also visited pet supply and grooming stores, vet clinics and similar places. Her main question was: how are you finding jobs? Most job leads came via friend networks. “They said, ‘It’s very hard and it’s kind of all over the place,’” Bolulu says. “The results were really telling. Clearly there was a need in the market for businesses that wanted to hire people for their

ArgonautNews.com

pet business, that had experience in the industry or that wanted to work in the pet industry.” Bolulu’s research, data collection and personal intuition led her to decide that a specialized job board was a necessity in the current climate. Since the soft launch of PackHire in February, Bolulu has received encouraging statistical results to back up her decision. PackHire has more than 1,000 registered users, among them National Veterinary Associates and Banfield Pet Hospital, and many boutique clients in grooming, doggy day care and supplies stores. Bolulu has had more than 10,000 website visitors and a 10 percent click-through rate, which she deems “pretty high.” Pets have always been a part of Bolulu’s life. While growing up in suburban Orange County, her family raised many animals, among them dogs, cats, birds, a turtle and a bearded dragon, a type of lizard. Currently, her pets, Meeko the dog and Uma the cat, help maintain Bolulu’s love for animals and inspire her career. As for the future of PackHire, Bolulu wants to raise funding with seed or angel funds for its next level of development. After starting as a job board, PackHire incorporated a recruiting services search. With those first two steps complete, the third is to be a digital community where pet professionals may connect with each other. To that end, Bolulu plans to participate in community events including one upcoming: she will be featured at The Pet Summit, a virtual educational seminar from October 23 to 24 as a panelist in the “Meet the Founders: The Ins and Outs of Business In The Pet Space” to discuss hiring trends, challenges and career outlook. PackHire 714-308-3745 info@packhire.com packhire.com

Job seekers can use PackHire to search jobs in a variety of pet industries such as veterinary care, rescues and nonprofits, while employers can post jobs, search the candidate resume database and work with industry expert recruiters to find quality candidates for their pet business. What is Sugaring? Originating in Egypt, sugaring hair removal has been around since 1900 B.C. Great for sensitive skin types because it consists of just three ingredients: sugar, lemon, and water. The paste is rolled in the opposite direction of hair growth, and hair is removed with a flicking motion. This allows for the hair to be pulled from the root with less broken hairs, and causing fewer ingrowns! Because the hair is removed from the root, sugaring slows down hair growth, and hair grows in softer and finer over time.

Teaching Tech Skills

Program provides free work training and job placement for young adults and veterans PHOTOS COURTESY OF NPOWER

The IT Support Specialist Program is a six-month training program that provides tuition-free work training and job placement for young adults and military veterans.

By Kamala Kirk new tech training program launched in Los Angeles County this month that provides tuition-free work training and job placement for young adults and military veterans. Funded by Microsoft and national nonprofit NPower, the expansion of the six-month training program into LA comes following the success of its San Jose program. “NPower was originally founded in 2001 by Microsoft as a managed service provider of tech support for nonprofits around the country,” said Chris Starling, executive director for NPower California. “NPower was incorporated and began offering tech training to youth who could deliver these support services to nonprofits and beyond. Later the focus shifted to tech training and follow-on job placement. To

A

date, we’ve served over 6,400 students from nontraditional pathways and diverse backgrounds.” After receiving a grant from Microsoft, the program was able to expand to LA County in October. NPower also has a location in San Jose, CA, along with cities in six other states nationwide including Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York and Texas. According to Starling, the IT Support Specialist Program is for aspiring IT professionals at the beginner and intermediate level. Students can expect to master the basics of network infrastructure and troubleshooting. 18 weeks of instructor-led virtual training are followed by paid internships, project-based learning experiences or placement into a full-time tech job. The course culminates with the compre-

hensive reviews before testing to earn industry-recognized certifications including Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Azure Fundamentals. Along with technical training, students also receive mentoring, professional development workshops, ongoing social support services, and most importantly, job placement assistance. “Through skills training, real world experience, support and mentorship, NPower graduates launch tech careers and embark upon pathways to financial freedom for themselves and their families,” Starling said. “Many of our graduates go on to work in IT jobs such as systems administrator, desktop support specialist, support analyst, IT help desk technician, desktop administrator or cloud administrator.” Classes are limited to about

50 students per class in order to provide the optimal amount of individual support and attention they need to succeed in the program. “Becoming an IT professional has been one of my goals since I fell in love with computers,” said Su Lei Aye, a San Jose graduate of the program. “NPower taught me not only the hard skills of computer systems, but also the soft skills of communicating with people professionally. I was a freshman in college when I found out about NPower. I decided to join the program even though I was still enrolled in school, I can definitely say that it was one of the best decisions I ever made. NPower introduced me to amazing people and helped me open up. I learned valuable skills at NPower that college couldn’t teach me.” The IT Support Specialist

Program is available to young adults ages 18 to 25, as well as veterans and military spouses of all ages. Information for all of their locations and course offerings can be found on their website. Currently, NPower is accepting applications for Spring 2022 and applications are considered on a rolling basis. “NPower is continuously recruiting for our next cohorts and prospective students are encouraged to reach out to us directly by email or phone,” Starling said. “Combining veterans and young adults in the same cohort is very special because the veterans provide leadership and mentorship while the young adults help the veterans with their transition back to a civilian career.” NPower (212) 564-7010 npower.org/apply

Local high schools persevered during the pandemic to help students succeed

to pick up new and drop off broken Chromebooks.” Similarly, Venice High School provided devices to students and teachers, as well as Internet access points, working closely with LAUSD to transition students to online learning. “Both students and staff quickly adapted to the use of technology,” said Cynthia Headrick, principal of Venice High School. “VHS provided training for our staff, who in turn supported our students. There was definitely a transition period and a learning curve, but we all came away with a greater adaptability and deeper understanding of the use of various websites, apps and the LAUSD Learning Management System (lms), Schoology. The growth that occurred with technology during the pandemic has transferred to in-person instruction and strengthened it. Staff and teachers worked endlessly to keep students engaged, whether through strategies to engage students in Zoom lessons or by placing multiple phone calls home.” Staff at SMHS also learned new technology and incorporated social emotional activities into their lesson design to ensure that students were connected, according to Shelton. “Although not perfect, we wanted to provide opportunities for students to engage in instruction and also give them a chance to interact virtually with their peers,” Shelton said. “I believe our students and teachers did the best they could with the resources that we had. Our parents, students and teachers were all supportive throughout the pandemic. We provided distance learning instruction through Zoom. Students and teachers all had their ups and downs during this difficult and challenging time.” In April 2021, both schools reopened and welcomed students back for in-person instruction. While some things

By Kamala Kirk OVID-19 has had a significant impact on the educational landscape, creating many challenges for teachers and students. Schools had to quickly switch to a virtual learning format, finding new ways to keep students engaged while continuing to provide them with a high-quality education. Prior to returning to the classroom, educational institutions spent a lot of time planning and preparing to welcome students back to a safe learning environment while adapting to a new “normal.” Over the past year and a half, the administrators, staff, faculty and teachers at Santa Monica High School (SMHS) and Venice High School have gone above and beyond to support students and their ongoing academic success. From learning advanced technology to establishing updated protocols, the schools and their students have continued to flourish throughout the pandemic. When COVID-19 first hit in March 2020, both schools closed for 18 months during the shutdown. Dr. Antonio Shelton, principal of SMHS, said that when he and his staff were made aware that that would not be attending school as normal, they immediately asked students to take home their school-issued Chromebooks. “Thankfully, we had issued them to students and had started the year off with all teachers having to set up a Google classroom,” Shelton said. “Having a Google classroom already set up for students made the transition to distance learning a lot easier in that regard. Our students were given an opportunity over several days to pick up items left at school to continue their education from home. This was not easy, but we made it work for our students. We also set up a schedule for students

Venice High School faculty members (not in order): Frank Nunez, assistant principal; David Galley, dean/basketball coach; Yavonka Hairston-Truitt, assistant principal; Cynthia Headrick, principal; JuanCarlos Gonzalez, school administrative assistant; Trasey Nomachi, Japanese teacher and lead for WLGS magnet; Brent Rojo, math/engineering teacher lead for STEMM magnet; Richard Valerio, assistant principal; Taylor Thomas, campus aide; and Roberta Mailman, assistant principal.

have returned to normal, many updates have been made in order to maintain a safe learning environment for students and staff. “More and more of our students have gotten vaccinated and we test all students and staff every week,” Shelton said. “It is very important that we stay in school and support our students with instruction in the classroom, where we believe they learn best. Having interactions and collaborating with their classmates is just as important as providing instruction. Many things have returned to normal such as having lunch in the open-air cafeteria, students being able to sit in a classroom together and the sound of music on campus. The differences are that we are now wearing masks inside and outside on campus. Our concerts have been outside, along with our dances. All students have a computer and we use Google Classroom.” In addition to requiring

students and staff to wear masks inside and outside on campus to mitigate COVID spread, Headrick added that Venice High School is currently not holding large gatherings or assemblies indoors. “Our students are fully engaged not only in our academic programs, but also our extracurricular programs including athletics, marching band, theater and choir,” Headrick said. “VHS is vigilant about keeping our students and staff safe from COVID. This means our students scan a ‘daily pass’ each day to show that they are COVID symptom free and have not been in close contact with a COVID case and are not COVID positive. We screen all guests, whether coming to campus during the school day or at athletic events.” SMHS held a virtual graduation for the class of 2020, then had two socially distant in-person graduations for the class of 2021. When asked

how students have responded to the pandemic and changes in their educational environment, Shelton said that SMHS students have been very flexible and adapted to the new normal of wearing masks and being tested for COVID weekly. “The school experience is very different and people are very cautious,” Shelton said. “Students are more aware of the need to have protocols in place and they understand why we are requiring them to do certain things to keep our campus open. Students, teachers and parents all want to be in school and remain throughout the year.” Headrick said that despite some initial hesitance and anxiety, students at Venice High School have also adapted well to the return to school. “Students respect the wearing of masks throughout the campus,” Headrick said. “We are all grateful to be able to return to campus and experience school together.”

Venice High school’s campus modernization is still in progress and they completed their new state-of-theart shop building and science buildings. Their football stadium is also complete and in full use, and the landscaping throughout the campus follows the zones of California and is being used by the school’s new horticulture classes. The new gym will be completed in December 2022 and the baseball and softball fields will be completed by the spring season. Venice High School is also building outdoor tennis and basketball courts along Zanja Street, which will be done in Summer 2022. The campus’ historic auditorium is under renovation and will be completed in Fall 2022. “VHS is an amazing school filled with incredible educators and wonderful students,” Headrick said. “Our programs continue to thrive – STEMM Magnet, World Languages and Global Studies Magnet,

Media Arts Academy, Sports Medicine Academy, Law and Public Service Academy, School for Advanced Studies, and our Dual Language Mandarin and Spanish Program. We at VHS are fortunate to have such dedicated teachers to lead the work of our Gondolier mottos: One Venice. One community. Rowing NOT drifting. Educating students. Changing lives. Building futures.” Shelton added, “I see our students flourishing from the learned experiences throughout the pandemic. They have learned to adjust and navigate through difficult and trying situations. SMHS students have always been resourceful, thoughtful and social justiceminded. They became even more so during the pandemic and brought our students together. Many began to see more similarities amongst their classmates than differences, which makes SMHS a one-of-a-kind learning environment.”

The Mar Vista Art and Music Walk recently returned to live events in September and will be back on Saturday, October 23 from 4 to 10 p.m. at Venice’s ArtBarLa.

By Bridgette M. Redman he Mar Vista Art and Music Walk made its triumphant return to live events in September and will be back on the streets on Saturday, October 23 from 4 to 10 p.m. at Venice’s ArtBarLa. The live event will be paired with a virtual event that runs through October 31. Both events carry the theme of “Parity” and will feature art work and music from people who belong to the disabilities community. The event is free and a limited number of tickets are available at eventbrite. com/e/187256728917.

T

Walk builds on successful celebrations Founded in December 2015, the Mar Vista Art and Music Walk is a planned quarterly event to celebrate each season. At the first event — with just the two co-founders organizing it—between 500 and 1,000 people attended and the event grew from there. A joint effort of the environmental nonprofit Green Communications PAGE 60 THE ARGONAUT OCTOBER 21, 2021

Initiative and local artists, creators and small business owners, it was held the first Saturday in March, June, September and the Saturday after Thanksgiving in November. Their largest event was done jointly with the Venice arts community where they had between 5,000 and 7,500 people attend. They’ve had as many as three outdoor stages along their walk and many small setups for buskers. They’d also have two to three indoor concert venues during each event. Their last one was in March 2020, a week before the state shutdown because of COVID-19. Like others, they found ways to go virtual, with around 3,000 people showing up online to the first joint one they did with Venice in Summer 2020. Then, according to Lenore French, co-founder of Mar Vista Art and Music Walk, they started doing smaller live-streamed events in January 2021 and also offered a virtual online exhibition on their website.

“We were able to raise the funds to offer these small microgrants three to four times a month and curated live streams on our Instagram,” French said. “It was a way of keeping the artist community involved and keeping them paid. The main advantage of an art walk from an artist point of view is that it provides a marketplace for them to sell their prints and the many kinds of merchandise they can develop as an artist to showcase their talent and creativity.”

Art and Music Walk restarts with single-site events Now they are holding monthly small, one-site events leading up to Summer 2022 when they are planning to once again hold a large arts and music festival stretched out over the streets. The events, which started in September, are COVID-compliant with controlled crowds and volunteers taking temperatures and checking vaccine cards at the entrance.

ArgonautNews.com

“We’re going to continue to do these single location, mini-events that will have some of the signature highlights of our pre-pandemic art walks,” French said. “There will be music, performing arts and a roster of comedians.”

Organization focuses on parity for each events’ themes There have been some changes in focus since the pandemic. French said the art walks were organized around a theme and those themes have now changed in focus. She cited the racial reckoning that the country has had since the extrajudicial murder of George Floyd. “Like many organizations, we became very much aware of the role art can play in creating discussions around subjects that might otherwise be difficult,” French said. “Art is something you feel on a heart level. It bypasses the fight or flight instinct that

happens in your brain. The beauty of art is that it is meant to be felt in the heart. You can have difficult conversations by looking at something beautiful.” French said they have been reassessing where they are post George Floyd’s murder and their reckoning involved creating a platform to give everyone a voice in an equitable fashion. They are creating a platform for those who have been traditionally under-represented as artists so that they can have parity. It is why the October event is focusing on highlighting the work of artists from the disabled community. “What we are doing is that we are partnering with the Disability Community Resource Center to reach out to their constituents and clients who are artists,” French said. “We have made a special effort to reach out to artists and artist vendors who consider themselves part of the disability community.”

Party will stretch into the night The plan is to have art, music, comedians and food trucks at the event. ArtBarLA will also offer a limited food menu. French said the comedy show will feature artists discussing everything from mental illness to using wheelchairs. She cited the advantages to having it at a bar, even though after 7 p.m. guests will have to be 21 or older. “Our typically millennial, zillennial, Gen Z audience can enjoy themselves into the late hours,” French said. “There will be an afterparty after we ostensibly leave at 10 p.m. The festivities will continue.” What: Mar Vista Art and Music Walk When: 4 to 10 p.m., Saturday, October 23 Where: ArtBarLA, 12071 Venice Blvd., Los Angeles marvistaartwalk.org

The live event will be paired with a virtual event that runs through October 31. Both events carry the theme of “Parity” and will feature art work and music from people who belong to the disabilities community.

Chaïm Soutine yet intermixed with flavorful symbols of flowers and ladders more akin to graphic and comic genres. The composition and painting technique add a sense of depth. “Depth comes from experimentation and observation,” Winthrop said. “I learned the hierarchy of color, form and design from school. Also, as a kid I was inspired by comic artists, and later by street art and graffiti.” While street art and graffiti are created in public places, there are similarities and differences. Graffiti is often achieved in communities where text symbols of gangs mark their territory. Nonetheless, the colors and style of text along with imagery gives it an artistic, multifaceted presence. Street art similarly is in public spaces yet may be a commissioned or a noncommissioned mural, or imagery with a message creatively engaging some political, social or artistic commentary. “Street art could be a mural or art based on the images and just that,” Winthrop said. “It can be anything you decide you want it to be. Traditional graffiti is a name, image or letters based on letter forms or a name, representing crews of graffiti artists’ tag.” Besides his street art and graffiti experience, other influences for Winthrop’s art include Jean-Michel Basquiat and Pablo Picasso. One can observe in Winthrop’s works the Basquiat-like alter ego, and how it overcomes the self in relation to the world around us. In Basquiat’s paintings we may observe humor of the figure laughing with us at the absurdity. However, in Winthrop’s works, we are struck by the contrast of pain with graphic objects that penetrate like an arrow image, or delight with a flower. Also influenced by Picasso, Winthrop’s paintings depict surreal figures, time and space, and the aspects of art, yet rather than cubism it is graphics, graffiti and street art intermingled in figure,

PHOTO OURTESY OF JACK WINTHROP

By Nicole Borgenicht ack Winthrop grew up in Minneapolis, where his art teachers told him he could be an artist. He moved to New York City where he earned a BFA in graphic design at The School of Visual Arts in 2011. For the next nine years,

Artist Jack Winthrop’s debut solo exhibition, “The Wounded Healer,” is on view through October 30 at Gabba Gallery in Los Angeles.

symbols and text with painterly effects such as mixed media layering. Larger scale works is a positive for Winthrop who previously worked in garages, although since he’s been living and working in Venice over the last five years, his new studio space has allowed for increasingly bigger canvas. “My mediums include spray paint, acrylic paint with brush or acrylic marker and charcoal. I choose colors that are street art against a black or white background,” Winthrop said. “I create layers in depth as a freedom to spontaneity.” Winthrop’s blackish and whitish backgrounds are always a mixture of layered elements that together create a textured plane with areas of spatial ambiguity. This is achieved in some cases with the way he mixes the background surface with tones of spray paint and acrylic brush work. There’s a resulting vibrancy that covers the dark or light scene, which fits nicely with positive negative imagery throughout. In his “Wounded Healer” series, which is curated by Jason Ostro and Elena Jacobson and on display at Gabba Gallery through

October 30, Winthrop reveals his overarching themes. He wants viewers to comprehend what is being said without needing the words to explain it. He feels life experience and engrossing his life in various genres of art has brought him to this series. Furthermore, the symbols in the painting are the elucidation underlying meaning to be encountered. “There is an archetype in Greek mythology that Jung popularized that through pain and suffering, you will overcome it, heal and grow,” Winthrop said. “It is not so much that I am a healer, it is more emotional depth. My art comes out effortlessly. It is hard to talk about, more that people can relate to growth and overcoming things in life. The symbols in the painting are what led me here.” A few predominant symbols in Winthrop’s works comprise windows, ladders, drugs, words and flowers. “Arrows are wounds that heal, flowers are growth and hope,” Winthrop said. “Angst and symbols of get well are new beginnings that bloom.” Jack Winthrop gabbagallery.com/jackwinthrop-the-wounded-healer

THE ARGONAUT REAL ESTATE BUSINESS NEWS

Getting Started with Urban Gardening When we talk about urban gardening, it can broadly mean one of two things. The first might be a community garden. Many nonprofits and neighborhood organizations will launch community gardens in urban areas where people can work and share in the produce that grows there. For our purposes, we’re talking about something more like container gardening. If you live in an urban area, such as in an apartment, you can still benefit from having a garden, even if it’s on a smaller scale. You can grow vegetables, herbs and more, and enjoy getting fresh air. Container gardening is also good for your mental health and can give you a sense of accomplishment. The following are some of the general things to know as you get started. Available Space If you have a townhouse or condo, you might have some outdoor space that’s in-ground. You’ll need to check with your board or HOA to make sure you can plant a small garden. Flower pots or hanging baskets are another option, and they’re portable, so you can put them on a balcony or patio, and if you need,

move them inside, at least temporarily. There’s also something trendy right now for urban dwellers, which is hydroponic gardening. Some creative companies offer self-fertilizing stands so you can grow food, and they’re self-watering, so it’s the ultimate convenience. If you go with this option, you’ll need to add water to the reservoir weekly and add nutrients. You’ll also need to make sure the pH stays appropriately adjusted. Since these gardens go upward instead of out, you’re saving valuable floor space, which in an apartment or condo can be crucial. Decide What You’ll Grow Some things are better suited to container and urban gardening than others. For example, herbs are great, like mint, basil and sage. If you buy a hydroponic gardening kit, some companies offer hundreds of pre-sprouted seedlings, so you might find that you can grow cucumbers, eggplants and even strawberries.

Peppers grow well in limited spaces, including bell peppers, jalapenos and habaneros. Zucchini and squash are suitable for a balcony garden but don’t overplant because they can end up producing pounds of vegetables. A pot that’s anywhere from 10-12 inches can usually hold three to four plants. A pot that’s 14 to 16 inches can hold five to seven, and a 16-to-20-inch pot can hold six to nine plants. When you’re choosing what to grow, you want to make sure each of the plants you choose will be a good neighbor with the others. For example, if you combine plants that have different sunlight needs in the same pot, then some will suffer. Make Sure Your Containers Have Drainage If you’re growing plants in pots, make sure you drill holes for drainage if they don’t already have that. You’ll also have to put something below the container to catch the excess drainage water. Light Finally, when you’re planning your urban or container garden, you’ll have to think

PAGE 72 AT HOME – THE ARGONAUT’S REAL ESTATE SECTION OCTOBER 21, 2021

about sunlight. Most plants need anywhere from 7 to 12 hours of sun a day and that’s especially true of herbs and fruiting vegetables. If you don’t think you’re going to be able to get that much light, then you might want to grow something like chard or spinach, both of which tolerate shade well. If the label says a plant needs full sun, that means between 6 and 8 hours of sun a day. Partial sun is between 4 and 6 hours of sun a day, and shade usually means less than four hours of direct sunlight a day and filtered sun the rest of the time. If you’re going to move your containers inside during the winter, you can use plant grow lights, which simulate the effects of the sun and are excellent in an urban environment.

LOS ANGELES TIMES SUNDAY CROSSWORD PUZZLE “SHH!” By JOHN-CLARK LEVIN

VENUS ENVY

I got a boob job two years ago. My best friend, seeing the results, wanted one, too. When she realized she couldn’t afford it, she started making snide comments about women who get them. Recently, a guy was hitting on me at a party, and she started flirting with him and asked, “Do you think I need a boob job?” and told him I’d gotten one. I was shocked. I’d like to say something to her, but she’s the louder part of my friend group, and I’m unsure how. — Disturbed

Self-defense for men is karate or maybe Krav Maga. For women, it’s ducking mean remarks. Many people have a romanticized view of women as the sweet, ever-nurturing “better angels of our nature.” That’s a major myth, but it continues to have traction due to the nature of female rivalry, which is much like slow-acting poison gas. (It’s often hard for a woman to recognize she’s been dosed...till she’s writhing on the floor like a goldfish sucking in its last desperate breaths.) While from boyhood on, guys tend to relish competition and are openly aggressive (like when one socks another in the jaw), psychologist Anne Campbell describes female aggression as “indirect” and “covert” (sneaky and hidden). She believes women evolved to compete this way to avoid physical harm that might have damaged their ability to have or care for children. Common sneaky lady war tactics include weaponizing a group of women against a targeted woman by spreading nasty gossip about her and rallying the coven to ostracize her. In the presence of a man or men, one woman will try to undermine another woman’s mate value by revealing her supposed hussyhood or trashing her looks – as you experienced. Men tend to prefer natural breasts (though their eyes go boi-oi-oing! at the big, pert fakeuns). Your “best friend,” spotting that a guy seemed into you, performed the vital public service of informing him your bodacious boobs are, in fact, siliconey islands. Why would she do this? Well, unbeknownst to you, you violated an unspoken rule of female society by amping up your appeal to men via Boob Fairy, M.D.: openly competing with other women. It’s the “openly” part that’s the problem. Psychologist Joyce Benenson explains that, in contrast with “the constant male struggle to figure out who is better, faster, smarter or otherwise more skilled,” girls and women enforce “equality” among themselves and resent and punish women who

stand out. “Should a girl appear superior, even accidentally,” she is guilty of a crime against the rest and “faces social exclusion.” This carries through to adulthood, with the thinking (summed up by Benenson): “Nice women don’t try to outdo their female peers.” Of course, women do compete. But, Benenson – per interviews with hundreds of women by various researchers – women deny they compete with one another, even to themselves. This subconscious self-deception – “a woman’s honest belief that she never competes with other females” – allows her to do just that without any pangs of conscience getting in her way. That’s one reason why confronting this woman about what she did might be problematic. Additionally, research by evolutionary psychologists Tania Reynolds and Jaime Palmer-Hague suggests your standing up for yourself – telling this woman her behavior was out of line – could be portrayed by her (to other women in your circle) as your victimizing her! Thus putting a big stain on your reputation! Compared with “traditional forms of gossip” (the sort readily perceived as catty and mean), women’s disclosures of a friend’s hurting their feelings (kindness “violations”) get a pass, Reynolds and Palmer-Hague observe. They are “relatively trusted and approved,” suggesting women have “a social blind spot” to a tool used to trash the reputation of other women. Reynolds explained to me via email: Basically, if a female friend says about another woman, “‘You wouldn’t guess how mean Mary was to me the other day,’ you’re less likely to recognize this friend’s disclosure as gossip.” In their research, disclosures like this “effectively tarnished ... social opportunities” of the women they were made about. “Participants evaluated women who treated their friends poorly as immoral,” avoided having them as friends, and wanted to “warn others about their bad character.” You might decide to say something anyway: gently tell this woman you prefer to keep news of your boob job unbroadcast. Note that even this approach could be turned into ammunition against you through a “victimhood” story she might tell. Consider whether you have the social and emotional capital to bear the potential costs – while factoring in the psychological cost of just sucking it up and saying nothing. Ultimately, though many women are nothing but supportive of other women, it’s wise to remain mindful that, well, behind every beautiful woman is a crowd of other women looking to push her into a shed and padlock the door.

Reservations required for Indoor & Outdoor Dining • Take Out is also available We at George Petrelli’s Steakhouse would like to express our sincere gratitude to the entire community for voting us Best Independent Local Steakhouse on the Westside. Petrelli’s Steakhouse, a Culver City landmark, truly exemplifies the realization of the American Dream. From it’s humble beginnings as Petrelli’s Airport Cafe, founded by Joe Petrelli in 1931 to George Petrelli’s Steakhouse, the Petrelli family traditions of hospitality, and serving delicious steaks that are dry-aged and custom hand cut on the premises continues. Marie Petrelli, daughter of George Petrelli, and niece of Joe Petrelli, alongside with her mom, Sophie, is proud to be carrying forward the Petrelli family legacy. Marie is determined to keep her “Dad’s Dream Alive”.
