A Letter from the Editor: From Then to Now

Local News & Culture

As a kid growing up in Hermosa Beach, I was always drawn to the excitement of the Westside. Some of my fondest memories as a student at El Segundo High School were summertime quests on my beach cruiser with a group of girlfriends, making our way up the Strand, not stopping until we made it to the Venice Boardwalk. Heading north, beach by beach, I came to see the beauty of a coast full of diversity, creativity and spirit. Saturday nights at the Third Street Promenade were always a favorite, as the place came alive after dark with all of the amazingly talented street performers, jazz musicians and breakdancing crews. While attending the University of Southern California, First Fridays on Abbot Kinney were my favorite way to celebrate the end of another school week as I lined up to experience the most innovative and eclectic food trucks in Los Angeles. I landed my first editorial internship in Santa Monica and one of my earliest writing gigs was for Westside People. The Westside is a place filled with many special memories and I’m always overcome with a great sense of nostalgia whenever I visit. As I step into my new role at The Argonaut, I look forward to establishing an even deeper connection with this incredible community. I know there are many stories waiting to be told and I am eager to share them with you.

Gov. Newsom Shouldn’t Bulldoze LA’s Ballona Wetlands The Secret Agenda: Helping the Fossil Fuel Industry With people distracted by the pandemic, fossil fuel operators quietly got permits to begin digging into the Ballona Wetlands to get a head start on this plan to excavate millions of cubic yards of soil and destroy crucial habitats. They were hoping nobody would notice… but we did. Protests erupted! Critics pointed out that the so-called “restoration” would primarily benefit the fossil fuel industry, which wants to relocate and upgrade their little-known, crumbling gas storage facility under the wetlands. For that, you need bulldozers. Lots of ‘em. Environmental activist Molly Basler tried to photograph this work from the public sidewalk. The gas company called police who converged around her. She was falsely accused of trespassing. This past week, Basler

By Jane Velez-Mitchell and Marcia Hanscom Those of us who live near the Ballona Wetlands see the egrets clustered in groups poking their beaks in the brook. We see the pelicans open their wings, as if in celebration of life itself… and we think: they have no idea. These innocent beings have no clue that powerful, monied interests want to destroy their home, 640 acres of wild land….the Ballona Wetlands, LA’s last remaining coastal wetlands. This ill-conceived plan to spend $250 million dollars—public dollars—and a decade bulldozing our precious wetlands is a punch to the gut. These power brokers have the nerve to call this proposed obliteration a “restoration.” They conveniently fail to mention that this area is home to 1,700 species, from owls to skunks, from foxes to herons. They want to destroy the habitat of several endangered species, like Belding’s Savannah Sparrow! Killing is not conservation. Destruction is not restoration.

The Ballona Wetlands are LA’s last remaining coastal wetlands.

Getting Creative Six college graduates are redefining the advertising space By Caden Sullivan This year’s college graduates entered the workforce during one of the most challenging times in history. Across the country, employers are rejecting and laying off new hires, leaving recent graduates with few options. Some of these students, however, are viewing this as an opportunity to create their own work. Among the student businesses popping up right now is NinetyEight, a marketing agency founded by six graduates from Loyola Marymount University. Bryant Lin, Celine Chai, Eduardo Rafael Pablin, Fran Magsalin, Gia Lee and Sammy Lent were encouraged by professors Andy Rohm, Eric Johnson and Matt Stefl to form their own agency rather than seek jobs at one. “Most of us had an inkling that we wanted to work in the advertising space, but that meant going into a traditional agency,”

NinetyEight is a creative advertising agency that was founded by a group of Loyola Marymount students. Chai says. “But when COVID hit, none of them were hiring and we still really wanted to be in this space, so we kind of created it on our own.” The name NinetyEight comes from the year that the founding members were born: 1998. They just launched in June, but they’ve already seen success in digital marketing with several companies. Not even a year in, NinetyEight has collaborated and worked with companies like KAA Design Group, Hardy Capital Investments and Billie

Bump. “Fresh out of college, pitching to a CEO—that was huge for us,” Lee says. NinetyEight markets to Generation Z, so they know their market very well. They’ve also partnered with organizations, built campaigns for public service and included numerous social issues in their work. Currently, they’re working on Hygiene U Give (H.U.G.), a campaign they created to help tackle the injustice around the distribution of feminine hygiene products.

“Gen Z just cares,” Lent shares. “They care about what companies are doing and they care about their impact on the world. Everything we do, we keep that in mind. We’re always thinking about our impact on the community and that carries over into who we work with.” Marketing to a younger audience is never simple, but NinetyEight cuts out all of the generational differences seen in other agencies. Because of their age, situation and values, NinetyEight prides themselves

on working faster, creating better content and costing less than their competition. Whether they’re posting themed playlists to their Instagram or pulling all-nighters for pitch meetings, NinetyEight is constantly thinking up new ways to market and reach an audience. They’ve also worked with local companies in Culver City and Playa Vista, so be sure to keep an eye out for these rising stars. For more information, visit ninetyeightla.com.

Potatoes for the Planet

Mar Vista resident is on a mission to heal the soil…one potato at a time PHOTOS COURTESY KATIE POWELL

By Kamala Kirk Since Katie Powell was a kid, she has been a healthy eater. While her classmates were eating cereal, she enjoyed spinach sauteed with garlic. As she got older, Powell loved cooking for friends and family, but never thought of it as a potential business opportunity until late 2019 when she visited Costa Rica. “I’ve always been obsessed with nature, being outdoors and involved in environmental projects on a small scale,” Powell says. “I had finished reading a book called ‘The Hidden Life of Trees’ by Peter Wohlleben and it blew my mind learning about everything that goes on in the forests and the soil. My curiosity eventually led me to go to Costa Rica.” During her trip, Powell learned about conservation and rehabilitation approaches to food and farming systems at

Katie Powell founded Katie’s Twice Baked to offer customers a comfort food staple with a twist while supporting the shift to a more regenerative farming model.

Brave Earth, a regenerative farm and healing arts center. She was simultaneously enrolled in an online soil advocacy course with the Los Angeles nonprofit Kiss the Ground, which taught her about everything from farmer prosperity to biodiversity loss. After completing the course, Powell signed up for an internship with the nonprofit. Eventually, she became inspired to combine her love for potatoes and soil—and Katie’s Twice Baked was born. “Growing up in North Carolina, twice-baked potatoes were a staple in our home,” Powell says. “I began thinking of ways to bridge the gap between food and healthy soil, because commercial farming methods affect the nutrient density of many foods. I started to experiment with different recipes and had my friends over for taste-testing parties, where

In addition to having a weekly stand at the Playa Vista Farmers’ Market on Saturdays and Westchester Farmers Market on Sundays, she also offers local delivery in Los Angeles. “The farmers markets are a great opportunity to get feedback from folks on what they like,” Powell says. “I have a long list of different recipe ideas I’d eventually like to try making, but first I want to see how these go and then play around with more in the future.” To engage and educate customers, Powell writes down a random fun fact about soil on a chalkboard that she displays during every farmers market. I’d get instant feedback. After several months, I was able to nail down the potato flavor combinations that people liked the most.” The twice-baked potatoes are available in six flavors including their bestselling Buffalo chicken, which features a mix of organic chicken, celery, red onion, cheese and buffalo sauce topped with green onion and parmesan, then sprinkled with blue cheese crumbles. Another favorite is the Queen Green, a vegan option that combines organic celery, broccoli, spinach and rainbow chard mixed together with homemade cashew cream and topped with a vegan cheese blend. All of Katie’s Twice Baked potatoes are made with locally and responsibly sourced fresh produce and meats. Perry Farrell released “Perry Farrell—The Glitz; The Glamour” last week. It’s a 35-year retrospective of Farrell’s life, music and arts that focuses on 68 alt-rock rarities that was served in vinyl and collectible boxset.

Perry Farrell Emerges From the Dark By Christina FuocoKarasinski When Perry Farrell hit 60 in March 2019, he knew he had to change. He spent years in the dark, but decided it was time to emerge. “I just holed up and I partied. I didn’t want to completely be social,” Farrell said. “I didn’t really want to completely become active, an active participant in society. “At 60, you know how it feels, man. You get a little wear and tear. We made it through this far. For the rest of my life, it’s maintenance and discovery. I want to maintain and be around and available not just to people, but my family for sure.” Thanks to Farrell’s management, vaulted music hit stores November 6, pushing the

singer’s legacy beyond “just” Jane’s Addiction or Porno for Pyros. “Perry Farrell—The Glitz; The Glamour” is a 35-year retrospective of Farrell’s life, music and arts that focuses on 68 alt-rock rarities that was served in vinyl and collectible boxset. This collection puts his stake in the ground, as it were, as the “Godfather of Alternative Rock.” Across nine 180-gram vinyls, “Perry Farrell—The Glitz; The Glamour” takes fans through his expansive solo career starting with his first band Psi Com and its five song selftitled EP. Recorded in 1985, just prior to the formation of Jane’s Addiction, the Psi Com sound was inspired by artists like Joy Division and Siouxsie and the Banshees.

PAGE 10 THE ARGONAUT NOVEMBER 12, 2020

The band was recently featured in the new documentary “Desolation Center,” the previously untold story of ’80s guerilla music, art and culture in Southern California, and is available on all streaming video platforms. From 2001, “Song Yet to Be Sung” was inspired by and recorded after a life-changing experience in Sudan helping free thousands of slaves from human bondage. This experience and album set forth Perry as a humanitarian and his commitment to equality. The 12-song EP was written and produced by Farrell and is joined on the album by lifelong friends including Dave Navarro (Jane’s Addiction), Martyn LeNoble (Porno for Pyros) and Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction and Porno

For Pyros). Satellite Party’s 2007 album, “Ultra Payloaded,” was co-produced by Perry, Steve Lillywhite and Nuno Bettencourt and featured his wife and muse, Etty Lau Farrell. The 12-song LP also included collaborations with John Frusciante, Flea, Fergie, New Order’s Peter Hook, Peter DiStefano (Porno For Pyros), Thievery Corporation and Mad Professor. For the recording of 2018’s “Kind Heaven,” the alt-rock icon assembled guest stars— Elliot Easton (The Cars), Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters), Mike Garson (David Bowie), Chris Chaney (Jane’s Addiction), Etty Lau Farrell, Dhani Harrison as well as Tommy Lee, The Bloody Beetroots, Kascade and

Joachim Garraud. It featured singles “Pirate Punk Politician,” a searing indictment of the current state of our planet under a rising tide of autocratic regimes, and the soaring song of hope “Let’s all Pray for This World.” “The project was led by my management team,” Farrell said. “They came in, maybe a year ago, and they noticed I was all over the place. I hadn’t documented my career, all my pictures I’ve been saving, my life, my memories. My publishing was all over the place. “I had four to five projects. Some of them were just sitting there gathering dust. They were beautiful projects. They started listening to it and they said, ‘We want to pull it all together and make a centrifuge

Perry Farrell is known as the “Godfather of Alternative Rock.” or a center of gravity for it all.’ They really love the music. They wanted to know what happened to the music. I told them the industry just kind of evaporated or eviscerated slowly right before our eyes.” Farrell worked on new music back then for the likes of Psi Com and then reality hit. The Virgin Records store in LA shuttered. “Tumbleweeds were going through the parking lot.” “It was a beautiful record,” he said. “But it would end up stillborn. The songs were so good, and I put so much work and time into it. They were lovely. We wanted to put out a boxset and go all the way back to Psi Com.” The boxset also includes unearthed recording of Jim Morrison that Farrell composed, and to complete the circle written and recorded with LA’s next generation Starcrawler. “I did the Jim Morrison song with a young group, Starcrawler, from LA, that I produced and wrote with Taylor Hawkins and Starcrawler,” he said. Eleven specially commissioned remixes and collaborations spanning two exclusive

vinyls round out the set. These feature heavyweight luminaries from the electronic dance world including Maceo Plex, Groove Armada, UNKLE, Solomun, Booka Shade, Richard Norris, Francois K and The Avalanches. Farrell compares the boxset to the snacks his wife orders. “My wife gets snacks from different countries like Russia, another box from Korea, another from Sweden and then you get to taste what their potatoes are like,” he said. “Some chips have a shrimp taste, and others are super sour gummies. That’s what the boxset reminds me of. This crazy box of snacks. You go through it and you look at the packaging and you open the box really quickly and taste it.” The COVID-19 pandemic has been devastating to Farrell, who founded Lollapalooza. This year, Lollapaloozas in Chicago, Brazil, Argentina, Stockholm, Paris and Berlin were canceled. “We worked on Lolla 2020 as a virtual event,” Farrell said. “Honestly, I’m with the people, man. I stay on top of politics and current events. I’m very

motivated because of Kamala Harris and the Democrats and BLM and I really want to participate in the world going forward. “I think the next 10 years will be super exciting. We can retrofit or tear down the walls, become socially active and artistically active. It’s going to make it through. I’m inspired.” During the COVID-19 pandemic, Farrell has been working on his memoir, another goal for his 60s. “I have history,” he said. “When the pandemic hit, I said, ‘OK. I’m going to settle down and get my act together—probably what everybody’s doing—gather my music, my publishing, my pictures, stories and I’ve had a really fun time doing it. “Now, I really feel I’m prepared to enter into the third act of life. There’s a lot you can accomplish in this third act. I don’t want to look at this third act as I have to slow down. I was slowed down in the middle. Now I feel like the best Perry I can be.” Visit perryfarrell.com for more information.

Celebrity hairstylist Sean James at Matthew Preece Salon in Santa Monica. PAGE 12 THE ARGONAUT NOVEMBER 12, 2020

By Kamala Kirk When Sean James came to the United States in 1989, he had $500 in his pocket. A native of Queensland, Australia, he moved halfway across the world after Oscar Cullinan, a renowned celebrity hairdresser, recommended that James move to Los Angeles to pursue his career as a hairstylist. “Oscar was my mentor and he knew me better than I knew myself,” James says. “He said that LA was the place for me, so after I completed my apprenticeship at a salon, I bought a one-way ticket here.” James moved to Santa Monica, where he shared an apartment with a friend on Virginia Avenue for three years. In 1992 he headed to London, where he cut hair and did some modeling work. He worked evenings at a nightclub, and while there he hung out with Kate Moss and befriended the Vivienne Westwood team—experiences that developed his sense of style and love for fashion. Two years later, James returned to his old apartment in Santa Monica where he lived for a year before moving to Venice. His best friend at the time was Jennifer Nicholson, Jack Nicholson’s daughter, who threw regular parties that attracted some of LA’s most talented and up-and-coming artists, musicians and actors, including Alison Van Pelt, Chris Stills, Teddy Thompson, Rufus Wainwright and Chris Hardwick, many of whom became James’ longtime friends and clients. In 1994, James was working as a receptionist at Hair at Fred Segal in Santa Monica, where he encountered celebrities on a regular basis. He also signed with his first agent, Keith Zenobia, who booked him regular work on runway shows for Fashion Week, which gave James the opportunity to work on supermodels like Naomi Campbell and Beverly Johnson. But working behind the counter at Fred Segal instead of behind the chair made James realize that he wasn’t fully pursuing his dream of being a hairstylist. “I remember Meryl Streep came in and said she needed someone to cut her daughter’s hair, and I knew I could do it but I wasn’t able to because I was the receptionist, so I watched her go off and have her hair done by someone else,” James shares. “That was the moment when I realized that I needed to follow my dream because I was

James ended up working as a hairstylist there for 25 years, eventually becoming the creative director for education, teaching hair and organizing fashion shows at Fred Segal Beauty. He began to rack up a long list of credits working in film, television and runway, along with an expanding celebrity client roster that included Matthew Perry, Courteney Cox and Jason Bateman. In 1995 while he was still at

Fred Segal, James met actress Jamie Lee Curtis when he was doing her daughter Annie’s hair. One day, Curtis asked James what he would do with her hair, and in response, he chopped it all off. “I’m a forward person, it’s the Australian in me, and I told her to just let me do it,” James laughs. “I cut it all off and she nearly had a heart attack, but she loved it.” 25 years later, James and Curtis are as close as ever. Throughout the years, James has created different hairstyle adaptations for her onscreen roles and traveled with her to press events and premieres. “Jamie is always so generous about including me in whatever

movie she is doing and we discuss her character looks together,” he shares. “It’s an incredible friendship. She and I are like brother and sister. She has been there through thick and thin for me, and I would do anything for her.” Comedian and TV host Chris Hardwick has been another close friend and longtime client since the ‘90s. James has worked with him on more than 600 TV episodes, which include “@midnight” on Comedy Central and AMC’s “Talking Dead.” “Most people don’t realize what 600 episodes of TV is like, but that’s the same amount of ‘The Simpsons’ episodes that exist,” James points out. “Chris

and I have done so much together, we’ve traveled all over America. He and his wife Lydia are family to me.” Over the years, James has managed the manes of Marilyn Manson, Jaime Pressly, Paris Hilton, Chris Evans, Jennifer Love Hewitt, the Kardashians, and others. His regular clientele includes Eugene Levy, Courtney Love, Christopher Guest, Phil Keoghan and “Weird Al” Yankovic, and he has created iconic looks for Cole and Dylan Sprouse for “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody” and “Riverdale.” “Cole and Dylan are my buddies, I’ve known them since they were 8 years old,” James says. “I have a really great friendship with both of them and

I cut their dad’s hair, too.” In 2016, James became the artistic director for FHI Heat, where he forayed into the world of product development. When COVID-19 hit back in March, James was furloughed from his job, and the beauty and entertainment industries had shut down entirely. During that time, he decided to pursue his own adventure in the world of personal care and was hard at work on his new product line, Beach Blvd, which launched a week ago. The line is inspired by James’ life at the beach and his career in Hollywood. “I love the palm trees, ocean and sand here on the Westside,” (Continued on page 14)

FICKLE-DOWN ECONOMICS I’m a 29-year-old straight woman. I recently came to the odd conclusion that I have no idea what I want in a man. Over the past few years, I’ve been dating a variety of guys and hoping they’ll be right for me, and it’s not working. Some turn out to be nice guys, but some turn out to be jerks. One turned out to be a truly terrible person, but in hindsight, all were obviously wrong for me. In each case, the underlying problems were always there, but I didn’t identify them until things blew up months into the relationship or even a year in. How can I get clear on what I want? —Lost Looking for a boyfriend without knowing what you want in a man is like trying to order a meal without knowing what you like to eat: whether you live to put bacon on your bacon or you’re a vegan who stifles a sob whenever your mom cracks an egg for your dad’s omelet. Standards are our tool for narrowing down what we want, from lunch to love. In love, it’s important to shrink down your potential partner pool, but without setting such high standards (per your own mate value and the current mate “market”) that the only boyfriend or girlfriend you’ll ever have is the imaginary kind. Though we tend to view having more options — “Sky’s the limit!” “The more, the merrier!” — as better than having just two or a handful to choose from, research actually finds that having numerous options is often the stuff human misery is made of. Perhaps because the psychology currently driving us evolved in environments where situations rarely offered more than a few choices — “Bison breast or drumstick?” “Eat this bug or starve?” — research on decision-making has found we are unprepared for huge sets of options. We tend to suffer “choice overload”: We get overwhelmed, choose poorly and regret our choice afterward. However, there’s a caveat. More choice can be better, explains psychologist Benjamin Scheibehenne and his colleagues, when, prior to making a choice, a person has “well-defined preferences.” That’s where standards come in. Our standards for what we want in another person come in large part out of our values, though personality and genetics also play a role. Values

are the principles we care most about: the standards we use to guide our behavior. Though most of us probably think of ourselves as good people with good values, the truth is, if asked to quickly name our values, we’d struggle to do it. Being unable to immediately call up our guiding principles means when we need to act quickly, we’re often clueless about what we should do, and we’re prone to act in ways we end up regretting. Spelling out your top 8 or 10 values will give you a behavioral map: guiding principles for how you’ll act and, ultimately, who you are. To write your list, you might look up “lists of values” online. Here are a few of mine (not in any order): 1. Courage. 2. Wisdom. 3. Kindness. 4. Integrity. ... 10. Seizing life (instead of blinking like a cow while it rushes by). The person you want to be shapes the sort of person you should be with. For example, per my list of values, integrity is vitally important to me. So, when I came up with my standards for romantic partners — my “must-haves” for any man in my life — integrity was baked in: “Tall, evolved man of character who thinks for a living and cares about making a difference in the world.” Likewise spelling out your standards for a romantic partner and vowing to stick to them should help you extract yourself when you’re magnetized by a Mr. Tall, Dark and Manipulative: some hunky charismatic creep whose hotitude acts as a sort of sexual eclipse, blocking out what a terrible person he is. Assuming you include integrity in some form on your list, turning to your “must-haves” on a date forces you to look for evidence of good character, and when that’s missing, you’ll nix the guy and move on. Of course, being clear on your values and narrowing down what you want in a man won’t always be enough. There are some clever sociopaths out there who are pros at hiding who they really are. Coming up with standards for character might not allow you to identify all dignity-crushing exploiters immediately. However, you should be able to do it much faster than with a more “open-minded,” hope-driven approach: “Sorry, but I really have to draw the line at dating a man with a tail!”

Beach Blvd’s debut product, The Shore Thing, is a hand sanitizer formulated with organic essential oils.

Mane Man (Continued from page 13)

James says. “I’ve lived most of my life at the beach, it’s a part of me and I can’t be away from it longer than a few days. Beach Blvd is where Hollywood Boulevard meets the beach. I’d been wanting to create a product line for years. I spent six months doing research and designed the labels myself. The products are formulated in El Segundo.” Originally, James had planned to debut his first hairstyling product months ago, but when the pandemic occurred, he switched gears and started working on hand sanitizer. “It just seemed so out of touch to release a hair product at the time,” James explains. “I decided to release something that would help people take care of themselves while providing them with a sense of luxury. I’ve received lots of positive feedback about the hand sanitizer. People love how good it smells and feels, and it doesn’t have any toxic ingredients.” His first product, The Shore Thing, contains 70% ethyl alcohol and a signature blend of organic lavender, lemon and bergamot essential oils. Next, he plans to release another hand sanitizer, Coast Is Clear, which features caramel and orchid

notes. In the coming months, Beach Blvd will launch several hairstyling products as well. The line is available online and at Matthew Preece Salon in Santa Monica, where James has worked for the past four years. Although the salon has reopened at limited capacity and the entertainment industry is slowly getting back to where it was, James remains passionate about his career. He thrives on the connection that being a hairstylist provides—both to his late mother, who passed away when he was 11, and to those who sit in his chair. “I love to interact with people and bring light into their lives,” James says. “My past achievements in film, television and the salon have been an incredible adventure and an opportunity to be of service. Through the closure and reorganization of our city and how we are functioning through adversity, I see a bright future for what is happening in the world of hair and makeup, and I have a rejuvenated love and respect for my profession as I advance into what I feel is a fresh beginning.” For more information, visit beachblvd.co and follow James on Instagram: @seanjameshair

Reckoning With Our Past to Change Our Future By Dr. Robin Miskolcze Black leadership and Black votes made Joe Biden’s and Kamala Harris’ victory possible. Building on this momentum, all of us need to acknowledge that America’s economic inequality is rooted in white supremacy and continue the work to correct the damage. An undeniable example of systemic racism is found in the forgotten history of “Mayberry by the Sea.” In 1897, Titus Alexander, the son of a Black, two-time Arkansas state representative, moved to Los Angeles as a young man to build a life for himself. Amply proving his talents and leadership, becom-

ing a prominent lawyer and running as a Democrat for California’s 72nd State Assembly district in 1926, Alexander was eventually lauded by the LA Chamber of Commerce for serving as the honorary captain of the LA Fire Department and an active member of the State Democratic Committee. Alexander’s achievements did not impress the town of El Segundo. As a reward for Alexander’s achievement, Los Angeles offered him a lease to a small stretch of beach on the cityowned Hyperion property, directly adjacent to El Segundo, for the purpose of constructing a Black resort. But by January

1924, the LA Times reported the city imposed a restraining order on Alexander’s lease. When he challenged the city’s order, a citizen submitted a petition with 6,000 signatures to the LA City Council demanding that the beach plot, initially purchased by the city for raw sewage drainage, be an unrestricted public beach. Racist motivations for the denial was encoded in the description of his case. On October 26, 1923, the El Segundo Herald reported that El Segundo would fight hard against Alexander’s claim. The Herald mocked Alexander’s efforts to “elevate his race” by enabling his fellow African

Americans to “bathe in the sea water lapping El Segundo’s beautiful beach,” while not acknowledging that this was the same beach area that the LA Times described as a “sewer tilt”—an undesirable spot for sea bathing due to the foul run-off of raw sewage. On November 23, 1923, the Herald reported that opponents of the lease from Santa Monica to Manhattan Beach would take their case to the Supreme Court if need be, and there was even talk of “Ku Klux Klan activities as a last resort.” The threat of KKK involvement had already been displayed prominently in the front page headlines of the Herald’s October 26 edition

where a report on Alexander’s property claim sits directly adjacent to a column proudly reporting that El Segundo was well represented at a recent KKK initiation ceremony where over 150 residents of Redondo were added to the organization. Alexander never built his resort. His forgotten story is evidence of systemic racism in this country. With more than 70 million Americans voting for a Trump re-election, stamping their approval on Trump’s antagonism toward the truth of the U.S.’s painful racist history, now is the time to tenaciously keep Black lives and our history front and center if we ever want our country to heal.

Danger of Floods, Leaks and Blowouts State Sen. Ben Allen and LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn have told Gov. Newsom they’re worried about the dangers of this facility. The LA County Democratic Party and eight Westside democratic clubs have passed resolutions calling for this facility’s closure. Still, the fossil fuel industry plows ahead. That, even though the Environmental Impact Report for this project has not received final approval. Potentially dangerous errors in the flood control planning have given the Army Corps of Engineers pause. THE ARGONAUT REAL ESTATE Q&A

Make the Most of Your Outdoor Space this Winter Colder weather ahead doesn’t mean you have to forfeit your precious outdoor space. This year especially, you’ll want to enjoy your backyard or balcony as long as possible. Here are some tips to make the most of your space this fall and winter. Clean up ahead of winter Spruce up your yard to create an outdoor environment you’ll be motivated to enjoy. Take time to clean up and dispose of leaves and fallen branches. For your flower beds, pull out the dead annuals, add compost, then plant cover crops or add mulch. Warm it up Electric or propane outdoor heaters can help extend the outdoor mingling season. With free-standing, tabletop, and umbrellastyle versions available in a variety of sizes, there are options available to fit your needs. (If you live in a condo, check regulations first.) Use what you have Instead of putting it all in storage, leave your patio furniture outside. Add some machine-washable covers to give your cushions a fresh look. Circle your furniture around a fire pit and you’ll be roasting (and burning) s’mores in no time.

Look on the bright side Garden lighting at ground level will illuminate your landscape, and string lights with clear white LED bulbs can create an inviting ambiance. Solar powered, weatherresistant lights are more affordable than ever and make for hassle-free installation and upkeep. Food for thought Keep the barbecue in working order and your propane tank filled. Grill up some goodies, then enjoy them outside. It’ll be just like a winter tailgate, only cheaper and without a line for the bathroom. Last Minute Tips for Winterization It’s not too late to address a few home maintenance musts before winter fully sets in. Here’s a list of last-minute tasks to knock out before you go into hibernation mode. 1. Check and clean the gutters one last time. As the last leaves have fallen, take time now to make sure your gutters are completely cleared out. Blockages can create ice dams, which will damage your gutters and prevent proper drainage of water away from your foundation.

2. Check your furnace. If you have a furnace, replace your filter if you haven’t already, and commit to changing it once a month. A dirty filter will increase your heating costs and reduce the life of your equipment. Home heating systems that aren’t properly maintained may be less than 50 percent efficient. If you can spring for it this year, an inspection done by a licensed professional is always recommended. 3. Maintain your home’s exterior. Trim back trees and branches that are hanging too close to your home. Seal driveways, brick patios, and wood decks. Look for cracks and gaps around doors, windows, and eaves, and seal them. 4. Test smoke/carbon monoxide detectors. This one is easy to overlook, but takes only a couple seconds: hit the “test” button on your smoke/carbon monoxide detector. If the alarm sounds — you’re good to go. If not, replace the batteries and test again. Replace your smoke detector if fresh batteries don’t result in a proper test.

5. Consider an energy audit. An energy audit can show you how and where your home is using energy, so you can make simple updates to increase your home’s efficiency — saving you money. Home energy audits typically range in cost from $200-$400, and many energy companies offer rebates that make them even more affordable (or sometimes free). Perform your own quick energy audit by following some of these tips from Energy.gov. Taking these steps will not only lower your utility costs, but they will protect your largest investment, your home, from the unexpected weather conditions ahead. If you have questions about professional services for home energy audits, contact me.

Kenny was one of the most honorable and sincere people I have ever met. He was kind to a fault, frequently performing tasks for people and rejecting payment. Work was a joy to Kenny and served as an avocation as well as an occupation.
