By Gary Walker Shops, restaurants, charter operations and other tenants of Fisherman’s Village begin the year paying a higher percentage of their returns to Los Angeles County, thanks to a vote of the L.A. County Board of Supervisors late last year. In addition to monthly rent, tenancy leaseholders of Marina del Rey’s landmark waterfront mall — currently in negotiations for a new master lease expected to facilitate extensive redevelopment — must also pay a percentage of gross monthly sales to the county, according to property managers Pacific Coast Management. Office space tenants saw the biggest bump, to as high as 12%. Bicycle rentals and dry stack storage facilities went up to 10%, commercial boating rates went from 4.5% to 6%, and retail stores now pay 4% instead of 1.5%. “It’s really gonna hurt. “We’re struggling and I’m already getting squeezed,” Mark Sentryz of Marina del Rey Parasailing said of the increase. Fisherman‘s Village reported $14,757,745 in gross revenue in 2017 and $15,415,906 in 2018, according to the Los Angeles

Bomb Scare at Bridge Housing Site Ignites Incendiary Online Frenzy By Gary Walker The discovery of suspicious devices on and around the Venice bridge housing site on Main Street on Jan. 2 resulted in police evacuating the immediate area and closing nearby streets for over five hours. The Los Angeles Police Department’s Bomb Squad was called to the site at Main Street and Sunset Avenue at approximately 5:30 p.m. There they examined the devices, which had been designed to look like explosives, and removed them from the area. Los Angeles City Councilman Mike Bonin, who represents Venice, said police informed his office that none of the objects contained the necessary fuel to cause an explosion. “I am grateful to the men and women of the Los Angeles Police Department, especially those in Pacific Division and the bomb squad, for their quick, profes-

No War With Iran

Congress cannot allow President Trump to put political expediency over sound foreign policy when lives are on the line By Rep. Maxine Waters

Waters is a founding member of the No War With Iran Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives. Her 43rd Congressional District includes Westchester, Playa Vista and parts of Playa del Rey. Just three days into 2020, and already Americans woke up to a world that is more dangerous and unstable than we’ve experienced in recent years. There is no question that Iranian Major General Qasem Soleimani was a murderous general who was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Americans in the Middle East, but so many questions remain about what information the administration had alleging that additional

attacks on Americans were forthcoming. While no patriotic American laments the death of such a heinous individual nor would anyone deny that Iran is a hostile adversary, we cannot allow this president and his administration to take impulsive actions that needlessly escalate tensions and start a deadly war with Iran. Sadly, the writings have always been on the wall. Donald Trump and his administration have failed to develop a comprehensive strategy in the Middle East or seek out diplomatic solutions in tandem with our Western allies. In 2018, Donald Trump recklessly withdrew the United States from the Iran Nuclear Deal with China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and Iran, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action

President Trump is under fire after the U.S. drone strike killing of Iranian Gen. Qasem Soleimani (JCPOA), thus allowing Iran to pursue a nuclear weapons program —unconstrained, without United Nations inspectors, and without any recourse to stop them short of a U.S-led war

and occupation. Last year, Trump tweeted, “If Iran wants to fight, that will be the official end of Iran” and ordered a military strike in Iran, only to later cancel it. The assassination of Iran’s notorious high-ranking top paramilitary general, who is immensely popular in Iran, could trigger a deadly galvanized response from the regime and undoubtedly lead us to the brink of war. Tragically, he has done so without securing an Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) against Iran from Congress or properly briefing the American people. I’m concerned that the nowimpeached president’s actions may have been predicated in politics rather than sound foreign policy. In 2011 he tweeted, ‘In order to get elected, @BarackObama will

start a war with Iran’; and in 2012 he again tweeted, ‘Now that Obama’s poll numbers are in tailspin — watch for him to launch a strike in Libya or Iran. He is desperate.’ Perhaps Donald Trump believes that if he drags the country into war, the American people and Congress will rally behind him. Perhaps he thinks that war is a diversionary tactic. Perhaps he thinks it will drown out the criticisms of his scandal-plagued administration and protect him from removal by the Senate. Donald Trump is dangerous, and his actions could have dire consequences for the safety and security of Americans. He has cozied up with dictators like Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin, shielded for a Saudi regime that murdered a journalist, turned his

#metoo ‘No Wokeness Woke Enough’ Meghan Daum takes aim at the culture wars in “The Problem with Everything” By Christina Campodonico In her breakout 1999 essay “My Misspent Youth,” Meghan Daum stared into the face of her mounting debt — “There are days when my debt seems to be at the center of my being, a cancer that must be treated with the morphine of excuses and rationales and promises to myself that I’m going to come up with the big score,” she wrote in her twenties — and emerged a shrewd cultural observer of both Generation X and the American cultural landscape at large. In 2014’s “The Unspeakable: And Other Subjects of Discussion,” Daum wrote of the relief

she felt surrounding her mother’s death and her ambivalence toward a pregnancy at age 41 that ended in miscarriage. And in the anthology “Selfish, Shallow, and Self-Absorbed,” she gathered 16 writers to weigh on the stillcontroversial subject of choosing to live “child-free.” With her new book, “The Problem with Everything: My Journey Through the New Culture Wars,” Daum inserts herself into some of today’s most hashtagged public discourses, among them the #BelieveWomen media firestorm surrounding Brett Kavanaugh, cultural pushback against toxic masculin-

ity, the rise of the #MeToo movement and the wider socio-political fallout of the 2016 presidential election. But don’t expect the former Los Angeles Times columnist to tow the “woke” party line of the new #resistance espoused by the millennial/Gen Z cohort of a new progressive left that’s deeply influenced by intersectional feminism and identity politics. In “The Problem with Everything,” Daum contends with the murky definition of #MeToo, worries about the ease of social media sloganeering to undermine the principle of “innocent until proven guilty,” and posits that

women are equally capable of “toxic” behavior as men. She explores the rape-on-campus crisis through the perspective of a male student accused of sexual misconduct on a campus where she has taught. A naïve young man’s ejaculation inside a woman, “either by accident or out of indifference,” during an awkward sexual encounter without “explicit permission” is “bad news,” but does not count as “assault” in Daum’s book. The Argonaut: Is there a particular type of person who really needs to read your book? Meghan Daum: The one who really thinks there’s no hope. People who think that … the Trump era is such a crisis that we cannot have any dialogue, that we need all hands on deck, and we need to just stay on this very, very narrow approved hashtag resistance message — otherwise, the other side will sort of hijack the discussion and use it for their nefarious ends. I really want people to understand that if we don’t have a more coherent resistance movement and we don’t allow for more inclusivity, if we don’t listen to people from the other side and attempt to connect with them, we’re going to hand Trump another four years. Is there value in just being able to just tweet something to express those views and have that catharsis? I think it’s very quickly losing value. I know it feels good, but the rhetoric is not lining up with the reality. If you want to tweet that “the world hates women,” I would say think really hard about why you’re tweeting that or what you mean by that. What are you getting out of accepting this premise that it’s never been a worse time to be a woman? It’s never been a better time to be a woman. It’s never been a better place to be a woman. I know it doesn’t feel great all the time, but let’s have some perspective here. … If you’re just having these visceral explosions of emotion and getting rewarded for that, we really, really lose perspective on reality. Couldn’t it be argued that it’s good that we’re talking about these tough subjects in an open forum? The problem with talking about

were now the wokescenti. … The phrase ‘woke me when it’s over’ became a little in-joke with myself.” As flippant as that may sound, Daum sees her devil’s advocacy and “call for nuance” as on a critical mission — a #ResistanceToGroupthink, to quote one of her columns. “Bashing the right, especially in the age of Trumpism, was easy and boring,” she writes. “Inspecting your own house for hypocrisy was a far meatier assignment.”

Daum trains her critical eye on the social media-driven dialogues surrounding #MeToo, #BelieveWomen and ‘wokeness’ it only on social media is that the reward system on Twitter is such that if you say something very obvious, with no nuance or gray areas, you’ll be rewarded for that. If you say #BelieveWomen, that is the kind of thing that translates well on Twitter but that’s really not what the #MeToo movement is about at all. It’s an underselling of the #MeToo movement. In fact, it’s a mockery of it, because the #MeToo movement is about holding very bad acting men to account and listening to women and correcting things that have been wrong for a very long time. Unfortunately, the amount of time it took me to say that is not the kind of thing that translates on Twitter. We have all this really reactionary, misleading, ham-fisted messaging and that’s what gets rewarded. That’s what gets retweeted. That’s what gets you social capital on social media. If you try to say something complicated, you’re not only going to get ignored, you’re going to get penalized. They’re going to say, “Well, how could you say that?” My problem with having things play out exclusively on social media is that it really blunts any kind of discussion that can be animated and multidimensional enough to lead to real change. In the book you discuss “weird lunches” with a

powerful man who could have helped your early writing career. Where do you draw the line in terms of #MeToo moments? That was not a #MeToo situation. The reason I told that story was because I had never interpreted that as such. It was never quid pro quo. He never made an ultimatum or did anything like that to me. If you care about #MeToo, which I very much do, you have to care about due process because otherwise we’re just going to lose the whole thing. There’s a big, big difference between somebody like Harvey Weinstein and somebody like Aziz Ansari. I know we can have all kinds of conversations about if it’s older women or not understanding that the Aziz case was violative in some ways. At the end of the day, you cannot just go publicly accusing people of things without any due process, but that’s what social media has enabled us to do. You also write about a male student who was accused of sexual misconduct but believes he did nothing wrong. Correct me if I’m wrong, but you come down on his side of the situation? I wasn’t able to talk to the woman. I say in the book I believed him in so far as I spoke to him and I know him. I have no reason not to believe him, but

there’s also a whole world of experiences that this woman had and women like her have. There are so many women who have had things happen to them. I’m in no position to say one way or the other because I wasn’t there. At the end of that chapter, there’s a whole couple of pages about how I could imagine being in that girl’s situation. I can imagine being in the bed watching the movie on the laptop and keep looking at him and wondering if he’s going to make a move. … I can imagine being in the girl’s position and doing those things and then having a certain experience and feeling really awful about it and regretful and having any number of reactions. I really, really empathize with her. I think I say, “I can imagine doing all this up until the point of reporting it to the dean of students.” Was that a hard chapter to write? No … many of us have been in those situations where we want something to go one way, and it’s not going that way and we don’t know whether we should force it; we don’t know if we’re not being assertive enough or if he’s not that into me, or he’s just being nice, or he’s shy or whatever. There are so many factors flying around and the power is just constantly shifting. I think it’s really off the mark to just assume that the man has all the power in that sort of situation, at every moment of it. The power is being tossed back and forth, and that’s what interests me. Do you agree with the movement on campuses to have a culture of affirmative and enthusiastic consent? When I started the book three years ago, I was really of the mindset that, “Oh that’s stupid.” When we were growing up we didn’t have to do that. Like, “Can I touch you here, or can I touch you there?” I was rolling my eyes about that. And I have come out the other side really thinking that it’s not any of my business. You guys grew up with a whole set of conditions — mediated sexual messages that you’re getting online and elsewhere — that we just did not have to deal with. We did not have online pornography the way you guys did. We did not have dating apps. We did not have screens. We learned how to negotiate in-person intimate encounters without

any sort of mediated assistance. It just comes more naturally to us, and we also had a lot more freedom from this kind of oppressive objectification of women and men. I think that has really changed the way people approach sex. And so I don’t think it is any of the business of Generation X people or Baby Boomers or whoever to say, “Hey millennials, you’re just being silly about how you handle consent” because you’ve got an entirely different set of conditions. … We can just roll our eyes, but what’s the point? It doesn’t affect my life. If people want to have affirmative consent as a policy on college campuses and most people are cool with that, why should it bother me? Do you think people on the left would regard you as liberal or progressive after reading this book? Progressives now consider liberals to be centrist, and they consider centrists to be alt-right adjacent. … I don’t really care what somebody thinks I am, and I’m not even sure how useful those labels are. Do you see this book as an apologia or a defense of your beliefs? Nobody has accused [my book] of being an apologia. I really see it as an invitation to think alongside me as I try to sort through this. I’m not interested in making an argument. … I want to say, “Why are we at loggerheads, and why are we so conflicted, and why are we not able to tolerate a sense of internal conflict?” … You’ve got to embrace complexity. The book is really an invitation to do that, and a call for nuance. In your ideal world, what would the public discourse look like or sound like? It would be much more one-onone conversation, IRL, in real life conversation, not hiding behind a keyboard. I think we are starting to see that change. It’s no accident that these podcasts, people talking to each other for three hours, they get millions of listeners. You can go on YouTube and watch scholars and scientists and journalists and writers sitting down and talking with each other for hours and hours and hours, and people are into that. … I think this is a sign that they’re (Continued on page 13)

TOM SUCHY passed away on Christmas Day, December 25, 2019, following a battle with leukemia. He was hospitalized at UCLA at the time of his death. A resident of Santa Monica, Suchy had served since 1997 as a sales agent with Marina del Rey Yacht Sales. He was also a licensed attorney. A respected leader in his Roman Catholic Parish of Saint Mark in Venice, Suchy was president of the Pastoral Council, and a Eucharistic minister who regularly delivered holy communion to other parishioners at hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, or were sick at home. “Tom Suchy was one of the finest people I have ever known; direct and pleasant, spiritual and humble, and sensitive and giving,” remarked Steve Curran, of Marina del Rey Yacht Sales. “He was a role model in living the right way and showed his strength, faith and goodness to the end. God bless you Tom Suchy!” Born March 10, 1959, Suchy grew up in Detroit, Michigan. His lifelong love of boating began with his family’s power vessels on the Great Lakes. Relocating to California in 1990, Suchy acquired his first sail craft in 1993. In the years that followed, he has sailed to Puerta Vallarta, San Francisco, with numerous trips to Channel Islands and Catalina in between. He is survived by his spouse Maggie Palomo, and stepson Justin. Service plans are pending. TALONS SHOW Women are so mean. I’m the new girl at work, having started my job two weeks ago. Yesterday I had a date after work, so I wore my date outfit to the office. It wasn’t scandalous, but it was a little sexier than my usual workwear. I was in a bathroom stall, and I overheard two female co-workers talking about me: mean, nasty, catty talk. And really, my outfit was not terribly revealing. Why are women so awful to one another? — Upset Imagine if there’d been three women in the Garden of Eden: one wearing a fig leaf a little on the small side, and two to ostracize her for flirting with the snake. Welcome to Putdownapalooza! This sort of catty little gossip fest is a female specialty — an underhanded form of aggression against women who dare to commandeer male eyeballs. For women, competition for mates is a beauty contest. (Sorry, but Miss Congeniality doesn’t cut it.) While it’s good to be a good-looking man, appearance just doesn’t matter as much for men as it does for women. Because women get pregnant and left with mouths to feed, women evolved to prioritize finding a “provider” — a man who’s willing and able to commit resources — over landing some Mr. Adonis. Men know this, having coevolved with women. They’re more likely to dis each other and also trash each other to the ladies over how much money they make than, say, how tight their pants are. In short, if you’re an ugly millionaire it’s best if you’re a man. However, if you’re a hot barista or pizza delivery person, you’ll still get plenty of dates — if you’re

a woman. Because men evolved to prioritize physical appearance in mates, women will band together to punish other women for wearing skimpy, revealing clothes or just for being physically attractive. Women seem to recognize that other women do this. Research by social psychologist Jaimie Arona Krems suggests that women tend to dress defensively — wear less-revealing clothes and dampen their attractiveness — when they’ll be around other women that they aren’t already friends with. Prior research (by psychologist Joyce Benenson, among others) finds that girls and women tend to be vicious to newcomers in a way boys and men are not. For women, there generally seem to be “costs from incorporating a female newcomer,” Krems explained to me. The women we already know — “even those we can have some conflict with — may be less competitive with us. At times, their gains can be our gains. And very often, female friends protect one another,” sometimes from other women’s aggression. “In fact, we might even dress a little more revealingly ... when we’re with our female friends than when we’re heading out alone ... perhaps because our friends have our backs.” As for you and now knowing this, when you’re going to be around women you aren’t yet friends with, you might want to take it down a notch in sexy or wait till you’re leaving work to slinky it up. Remember, as Michelle Obama said, “There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish” — for example, hacking into the new office hottie’s LinkedIn and promoting her to “Vice President of Lap Dances.”

LOATHE ACTUALLY I’m a gay man, and I’ve developed a crush on my best friend, despite his not being my type at all. He’s very confident, and I kind of want to be him. I have many insecurities, and a mutual friend suggested what I really find attractive is how my best friend knows everything about me and accepts me anyway. The more I think about it, the more I suspect our mutual friend is right. — Wrong Reasons? Ideally, the process of feeling good about yourself is not modeled on siphoning somebody’s gas. There’s a key word in “self-acceptance” — a big how-to clue — and it’s “self.” Self-acceptance involves your embracing your whole self — all of your qualities and characteristics, positive and negative. Psychologist Nathaniel Branden

explained, “‘Accepting’ does not necessarily mean ‘liking’” or that there’s no need for improvement. It means recognizing you’re a package deal, and you can’t have the good stuff about you (say, your kindness) without the stuff that needs improvement (like how your housekeeping style is right out of Better Landfills and Dumpsters). To crank up self-acceptance, recognize that it’s not just a feeling but an action — something you do: deciding to like yourself (and even love yourself) as a human work in progress. When you do the job of accepting yourself, you no longer need to slot somebody in as a romantic partner simply because they don’t find you repellant. (If the neighbors file a complaint about the noise from your bedroom, it ideally isn’t because you spend hours weeping inconsolably after sex.)

Brunching at Élephante Beach House, you’ll probably feel as if you woke up on vacation, minus the jetlag. With its roomy layout and mix of textural elements, this rooftop restaurant overlooking the ocean is instantly relaxing. “I wanted the space to feel Mediterranean,” says restaurateur and designer Nick Mathers. “As long as you feel you’ve been transported, I’ve done my job.” Though the space conjures many exotic locales (North Africa, Hawaii and Costa Rica, for example) the menu’s emphasis is coastal Italian fare, particularly the Amalfi Coast and Sicily. Mathers was inspired, he says, by a trip to Pantelleria, an island near Sicily. Mathers and executive chef/partner Thomas Lim are world travelers who hail from Australia. Upon visiting California, they fell in love with Los Angeles. Apparently it took the fresh eyes of two outsiders to execute what seems to be a common-sense business proposition but, surprisingly, can be hard to find near the ocean: serve excellent food in a great space with an amazing view. “We wanted to offer top-quality food — of the white-tablecloth caliber — but much less formal and fussy,” says Mathers. And he knew he’d found the ideal location on Second Street. “I want this roof!” he remembers saying. Lim explains it this way: “There was a gap in the market on the Westside. No one was making the most of the coastline, the vista and the good weather. When you have a view like that, you’re in for something special.” And one more key component: service, Australian style.

By Kellie Chudzinski Nearly 200 tech entrepreneurs, investors and nonprofit leaders gathered in November in the Expert Dojo startup incubator at Santa Monica Place to explore entrepreneurial solutions addressing the homelessness crisis. The second annual Tech + Homelessness event showcased programs and innovations that connect people experiencing homelessness to resources or services by local and national organizations. Sharon Plunkett, director of social innovation for Venice-based social services nonprofit the St. Joseph Center, discussed the organization’s Code Talk program, initially funded by Snapchat. The free 16-week intensive for homeless and low-income women aims to break cycles of poverty by teaching students front-end web development. “The city is outpacing the people who live here,” Plunkett said of a rapidly gentrifying Los Angeles. “The world is not kind to people who trip and fall, and it’s hard to get back up.” Erika Odom, who began as a student of the program and now works in web design

tion and Journalism, LA Community Action Network (LACAN) and community members — intends to empower people experiencing homelessness by providing access to solar-powered bicycle carts. Because most people who are homeless are believed to have access to a cell

phone, LACAN Executive Director Pete White pitched a funding and materials request for Skid Row Power’s Charge N’ Chill cart, which runs on solar and battery power to provide a wireless hotspot and can charge up to 14 devices at one time. Both CG Chen of Ample Labs and Mel Tillekeratne of Showers of Hope discussed technology that aims to connect homeless individuals to resources. For Chen that means anything from free meals to crisis hotlines, while Tillekeratne is focused specifically on shower facilities. Four other leaders from the nonprofit and tech sectors pitched the audience for resources. Some needed an app to make their particular program more accessible, while others asked for funding and resources to expand their geographic reach. Tech + Homelessness was the brainchild of angel investor Nancy Hammerman, senior vice president of research and marketing at Sutton Capital Partners. She developed the concept after noticing a gap in the tech ecosystem. As homelessness continues to grow, she thought: “Shouldn’t we be doing something?”

Then, 10 minutes later, police suspect the same team hit Lucky 7 Liquors in Culver City at 12408 Washington Blvd. In the Culver City robbery, witnesses say one man was armed with a handgun and the other was waving

a baton-like weapon. Surveillance video related to that crime captured the suspects, dressed in dark hoodies, walking around the store and then pointing a gun at the clerk while they grabbed money from the cash register. After robbing the store of approximately $350 in cash the duo fled the scene on foot, according to a Culver City Police Department bulletin. Police are still examining footage from the Mar Vista robbery. No one was injured in either crime.

DJM Capital Partners, which currently manages Runway at Playa Vista, has been in negotiations with the county to take over Fisherman’s Village from the current leaseholder. As those talks continue, the county has raised annual minimum rent for any new lessee at Fisherman’s Village from $336,342 to $510,814. Vince Rubio of Tiki Mermaid, a Fisherman’s Village yacht charter and boat rental service, converted his seasonal business to a year-round operation to keep revenue going in the face of the rent increase. Adding insult to injury, state officials have banned employees of businesses in Fisherman’s Village from parking in a now-vacant county lot on Fiji Way, which means they now have to pay to park in the mall’s main lot. “Now we’re staying open 12 months a year,” Rubio said. “If we start losing customers, we might have to cut back on our staffing.” Daniel Nofal of Daniel’s Bicycle Rentals said drawing customers to Fisherman’s Village has become more difficult in recent years, exacerbating rent increases for business owners. “The problem is we just can’t seem to get any additional business into Fisherman‘s Village the way things are. For the 18 years that I’ve been here we just deal with it, do the best we can, and hope and pray the weather stays warm enough so people keep coming to Fisherman’s Village,” Nofal said.
