Good job, Los Angeles. Even in the face of devastating challenges, your resilience and magic keep hope alive. Thank you to the givers, the sharers, the healers, the nurses, the doctors, the friends, the family members, the therapists, the coaches, and the people helpers who have stepped in to help uplift the community in countless ways through a global pandemic. Together, we walk through the gates of initiation. Having seen the world's problems and challenges exacerbated in the unprecedented ways we have, we must now come together and hold space for an unprecedented time of healing. We all have different roles to play, and we will all be inspired to contribute in different ways. For some, it means volunteering. Others will donate and contribute resources, create art, teach, and solve problems. For me, I'm running for Venice Neighborhood Council President, a two-year volunteer position created to help the City of Los Angeles better understand the needs of the Venice stakeholders; those who live, work, or own property in Venice. My nonprofit work, including work in the field of anti-human trafficking, combined with my work as a meditation teacher, counselor, group facilitator, and grassroots organizer brings together a strong background of the teambuilding, problem-solving, and mediation skills necessary for serving as President of the VNC. Once elected, I commit to running respectful meetings, listening to our neighbors, empowering committees, and demonstrating intentional mindfulness in leadership by holding space for the excellence, ideas, and skills of those on the council, on the committees, and in the community. I commit to representing the collective voice of Venice in my communications with the City, cultivating respectful and beneficial relationships with the City and other neighboring Neighborhood Councils, practicing patience, always open-mindedly exploring all sides of every situation and treating this position like a full-time job for the duration of the two-year term. My vision for the VNC is a collaborative, solution-oriented environment for bettering our neighborhood. We will not solve our problems with infighting or by complaining to the "higher ups." We will solve them by getting involved, learning, and taking responsibility for ourselves and the world around us. If we really do this right, and something tells me we can, not only will we make it through the many complex crises that we face, but we will also rise like a phoenix from the ashes, and embody a new model of possibility. Now, that may seem like a tall order, but a journey of a thousand miles begins with one single step in the right direction. Let's take this journey together. Love, Ben

L E T T E R S Moving homeless encampments Editor: Homeless encampments have taken over Ocean Front Walk, the neighborhoods around the Bridge Home on Pacific and Sunset, parts of Lincoln Boulevard and other Venice neighborhoods. In addition, continuously occupied RVs line Pacific north of the Bridge Home and around the Binocular Building. No one has the right to occupy public places, but the courts have not allowed cities to remove the homeless from such places if it has no place for them to stay. Los Angeles recently and successfully moved homeless people from Rose Avenue next to Penmar Golf Course and from Echo Park. It was able to do this because it had other places for them to stay. LA can do that again. The city owns a large vacant parcel of many acres at the intersection of La Cienega and Century behind the Hilton Hotel (Parcel 1). It also owns another similarly large vacant parcel at the intersection of La Tijera and Westchester Parkway (Parcel 2). By Memorial Day on May 31 (the start of summer), LA should: (1) remove all tents from Ocean Front Walk, the Bridge Home Neighborhood and Lincoln Boulevard, (2) bar continuously occupied RVs from Pacific Avenue, and (3) require the occupants to move their tents and RVs to Parcel 1, which is easily big enough to accommodate them. The city must also provide necessary sanitation and service facilities there. San Francisco has already done this as the LA Times reported in its May 7 front page story. In the meantime, the city should construct villages of Tuff Sheds on Parcel 2. Tuff Sheds are basically outdoor tool sheds upgraded with windows, insulation and cots for three to four people each. Oakland has already done this. The Tuff Sheds will provide interim housing for homeless people until more permanent housing can be found or developed. Why can’t Venice Neighborhood Council use technology better? Editor: When we look at our neighborhood of Venice Beach, do we really love it? Do we really appreciate its incredible gifts? Can we overlook its flaws? Do we see where it has come from and where it is going? These are questions that, as one of three candidates for Venice Neighborhood
Council (VNC) secretary, I am committed to asking. More importantly, I am willing to admit that there are parts of Venice that I absolutely love and there are things that, well, not so much. One of those aspects is the treatment of successful artists in our community. I’ve had the privilege of working closely with some world-famous artists who have galleries and studios right here in our neighborhood of Venice. I’ve also had the privilege of working with several major production companies and fashion designers whose offices are in Venice, and it is an injustice the way these incredible resources and fountains of knowledge have been overlooked when seeking wisdom and insight on how to solve some of Venice’s problems. Our community is quicker to run to get help from anyone and everyone else other than those who are the heart and soul of Venice: the world-famous artists! What makes Venice different from Manhattan Beach or Newport Beach? It’s our artist community! The artists themselves comment to me: “Why doesn’t anyone ever tell me what’s going on around here?” I helped develop a Burning Man Art Festival camp that experienced a meteoric rise from the first year it was founded to the fourth year it was rocketed to the center of Burning Man. I also have experienced going viral on TikTok and going from a few likes to 1.3 million views in a matter of days with over 15,000 comments. How many of my distinguished colleagues running for VNC can say the same thing? Technology, artists and imagination are the future of Venice! The Burning Man vibe and the creative social media posts from our zip code attract millions of digital hits every year. Burning Man is full of technologists that use tech to keep in touch across the world for most of the year. I am proven in my ability to use the most up-to-date tech and will do so in service to the VNC including Slack, Discord, Calendly and Dropbox. Furthermore, Reddit, Quora, Snapchat, TikTok and Instagram are all valuable resources as well. Why aren’t we using them more? I urge you, neighbor and fellow voter, to vote into office across the election candidates who are ready and willing to utilize technology for the improvement and benefit of Venice Beach. Ben Decker is that candidate and I urge you to vote for him as VNC president. It’s time for science and technology to be given their rightful honor in the neighborhood of Venice Beach. As a female founder, I bring the spirit of entrepreneurship that will go above and beyond what any other candidate may promise to do. Not because of who I know or my political relationships, but because of my ability to leverage the power of storytelling and technology to bring out the best in our Venice for ourselves and future generations. We need technology and we need to work harder, better, stronger and faster for the future of Venice. We need candidates who (Continued on page 6)

Young Artists Winners of 13th annual Sustainable Santa Monica Student Poster Contest announced COURTESY OF SUSTAINABLE WORKS
By Kamala Kirk Recently, the City of Santa Monica’s Office of Sustainability and the Environment along with Sustainable Works held the 13th Annual Sustainable Santa Monica Student Poster Contest. This year’s theme was “For a Thriving Planet, We Can Agree, Healthy Ecosystems and Biodiversity are the Key.” Students were educated on the meaning and importance of ecosystem health and biodiversity through the discussion of Rights of Nature, composting, gardening, dune and kelp restoration, owl boxes, bees and more. The contest was open to students from kindergarten through 12th grade who live or attend school in Santa Monica. 18 winners were selected this year with two winners being honored in a new Digital Excellence category. The poster contest winners were honored at a virtual awards celebration on May 19. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the contest educated over 766 students in 31 virtual or video presentations at public and private schools in Santa Monica, resulting in 299 poster submissions. Changing Lives No Limits helps deaf and hearing-impaired children and families PHOTO COURTESY OF NO LIMITS
By Katie Lulla No Limits for Deaf Children and Families is a Culver Citybased nonprofit that is focused on providing speech and language therapy, academic enrichment, and a national theater program to deaf and hearing-impaired children and families. They strive to create a community and help the children see a world beyond their hearing loss. “Most of the time there is only one deaf child in a classroom, they’re all alone in a room of kids who can hear everything that’s going on around them,” said Kathy Buckley, a deaf comedian and ambassador for No Limits. “Michelle, [the founder] wanted to give them a safe place. A place for them to be themselves and to be kids.” Michelle Christie started her work as a speech therapist at Echo Horizon School in Culver City. In 1996 she created No Limits Theater, which helped

kids practice their speech and communication skills. She later founded the language, speech and auditory training center in Culver City to impact the lives of even more children. Unlike most speech therapy programs, which help children from birth to five years old, No Limits stays with the children until they are 18 and maintains an alumni community. Christie made sure the program educates the whole family and teaches them to advocate for the child. “Her passion, her drive and her compassion, to know that these kids can do more than these people are saying, made her a hero in my eyes,” Buckley said. “She’s gonna make them have dreams. I was never taught to have dreams.” The No Limits Theater has had over 100 original shows in 13 different states. The theater program builds children’s self-esteem and language skills in a fun and creative way.

ArgonautNews.com exercise the brain to recognize sounds, as well as to teach them how to breathe so that they can speak.” No Limits is working with UCLA to do follow-up auditory therapy on the children receiving the implant. While UCLA does the procedure on toddlers, they also perform it on some children as old as 5 years old, which causes the brain to have adjusted to a life without sound. Consequently, many children have not learned to speak and have smaller than average diaphragms. Buckley said that the time needed to get to a speaking level varies. No Limits works one-onone with the children several times a week, and most children reach a competent speaking level within a few months. “The best thing in the world is when you see a parent, who has been living in fear and has no hope because they can’t connect with their child, hear [their child] say “Mom” for the first time,” Buckley said. “The family gets so excited because it’s the first time they have a connection with their child.” Due to the large need for speech therapy for deaf and hearing- im-
paired children, Christie brought the No Limits curriculum to people who couldn’t afford to come to the educational center. No Limits has gone to Africa, India, Vietnam and Japan to teach educators. Currently, they are working with children from Vietnam via Zoom. “That was the good thing about the pandemic, we could reach out to more people just through the camera,” Buckley said. “That’s been amazing.” In California, No Limits serves around 60 families in Culver City, has an additional educational center in Las Vegas, and has recently started work in Oxnard. No Limits also recently celebrated its 25th anniversary and held a virtual event with deaf guest speakers, No Limits alumni, a magic show, and a comedy show with Buckley and current students. Buckley said the nonprofit is celebrating the anniversary all year and encourages people to volunteer their time or donate money. “We want every child to have an equal opportunity of the best education possible,” Buckley said. nolimitsfordeafchildren.org

Buckley writes all of the lines to target speaking concerns. If a child has difficulties with “sh” words, she will include more of those words in their lines. “The cool thing is, with theater they don’t feel like they’re working on their speech, they think they’re working on their character,” Buckley said. “They see other kids with hearing loss [...] and it makes them feel normal.” No Limits Theater has students of a wide age range, the youngest being 4 years old. Alumni often come back and work with the younger students. Buckley said the alumni are especially important since they show the families and children role models and success stories. While the No Limits Theater provides a creative environment to practice speaking, the No Limits Educational Centers works to get children up to a speaking level, and later provide academic support. “With today’s technology, kids are getting cochlear implants, which give them the ability to hear, but the brain doesn’t know what to do with the sounds,” Buckley said. “Our job is to help

Beauty Essentials Amazing Lash Studio in Marina del Rey offers quality products and services COURTESY OF AMAZING LASH STUDIO
By Haley Beyer Perfect lashes and brows are essential for a put together yet natural everyday look. Though they are popular beauty trends, it’s important to find a safe and reliable salon that offers quality products and services performed by trained professionals. Amazing Lash Studio in Marina del Rey specializes in lash extensions and also offers lash lifts, lash bath services and brow services. Their lashes are comfortable and so lightweight that you feel as if you’re not wearing anything at all. The lashes are available in different lengths, fullness and shapes to match each individual’s eye structure, lifestyle and personal style. The lash artists in the studio also specialize in designing hybrid volume, 3D volume, 6D volume, and Featherweight Volume lashes. The lashes are semi-permanent and come in four styles: Cute, Sexy, Natural and Gorgeous.
Amazing Lash Studio in Marina del Rey specializes in lash extensions and also offers lash lifts, lash bath services and brow services. Lash extensions help make eyes pop and bring out one’s unique beauty. One of the best parts about lash extensions is the change in morning routine. Waking up with eyelashes that are already done makes a person feel more put together, more confident in their own skin, and puts them a step ahead in their makeup routine. Another thing that clients enjoy about Amazing Lash Studio is the tranquil and relaxed environ-
ment where they can receive services in private suites. “You’ll love our spa-like salon experience and the professional expertise of our licensed stylists that use our patented application process,” said owner Hamida Chandrani. The stylist will attach featherweight eyelash extensions to each lash in order to give clients the most natural-looking lash line. They use professional grade adhesive to attach the lashes.
Chandrani has owned and operated Amazing Lash Studio in Marina del Rey since September 2018. “I always wanted to do something in the beauty industry, and was blessed with an opportunity to open my own studio and provide clients with the amazing experience of full eyelash extensions,” Chandrani said. Amazing Lash Studio’s mission is to create lasting beauty and confidence through passion, dedication and excellence so their guests will look and feel amazing. The studio Chandrani owns is one of 260 independently owned and operated locations across the country. The franchise started in 2013 and has since expanded into 25 states. In 2020, Amazing Lash Studio launched its first AR Glamcam (an augmented reality camera on its website that allows guests to virtually try on lash styles) and was recognized on the Inc. 5000 list. The brand has
already earned the No. 14 spot on the Franchise Times’ Fast & Serious list and No. 99 on Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500 list this year. After closing shop for 10 months during the pandemic, the studio has taken the necessary precautions to make the experience as healthy and safe as possible to instill comfort in the guests who have started to come in. There are enhanced safety and sanitation standards put in place including requiring clients to wear a mask and checking their temperatures. The stylists wear gloves or finger cots to put an extra layer of protection between themselves and their clients. Appointment times are also staggered to limit the number of individuals in the reception area and have an overall reduced capacity in the studio. The word “zwilling” is German for “twin” and was chosen because Zwilling was founded during the zodiac phase of the Gemini. In June, the brand will celebrate its 290-year anniversary. Zwilling began with cutlery and has since expanded into cookware, flatware, glassware, kitchen gadgets, and even personal care items such as manicure kits. “We have everything anybody

One of the newest items is a vacuum sealer from the Fresh and Save line. It seals food so that it lasts five times as long and reduces food waste. All of the knives sold at Zwilling work differently and have different purposes. “There are a few items from the store that I decided I needed in my own kitchen at home,” McKnight said. “The cutlery from the Pro Line of Knives, the cast iron from Staub (Paris 2008), and all of my stainless-steel cookware from Demeyere (Belgium 1920) are my favorite.” Though the products may with a higher price tag, no other kitchenware enhances the lives
of professional and home chefs worldwide. “Customers have shown concern about the price of a product, but everything is premium, and in the end they realize they’re saving money because it will last a lifetime,” McKnight shared. “The oldest piece of cutlery I’ve had come through my store was a knife from the World’s Fair in Paris from 1851. It was brought in to be sharpened and was in perfect condition.” When visiting Zwilling’s stores, customers are offered demonstrations of how to use products and they are allowed to test them out. Prior to the
pandemic, fresh veggies were available so that customers could try out the knives to see which ones were best for them. Cooking demonstrations were also provided so that they could see the products in action. McKnight’s favorite part about managing the store is interacting with the customers that come in. “They come in and they don’t know much or anything at all, and I get to educate them on the best products for their individual kitchen and teach them how to use them safely,” McKnight said. Empowering Small Businesses Promenade delivers niche software to help companies expand their online presence PHOTOS COURTESY OF PROMENADE
By Sofia Santana There is no denying the fact that the pandemic has been incredibly difficult for small businesses. And for many, the transition to more online-based services has also been difficult to navigate. With this in mind, Farbod Shoraka and Gregg Weisstein sought to expand what was once a SaaS (software as a service platform) for flower vendors to a growth platform that could help a multitude of other small businesses flourish as well. “When we first started BloomNation, my co-founder had an aunt who was a local florist and learned about the struggles that local flower shops were facing as far as finding customers online,” said Gregg Weisstein, co-founder and COO of Promenade. “That’s when we originally started BloomNation, an online marketplace for local florists.” Throughout the pandemic, many of the flower shops BloomNation worked with were able to stay

After the recent surge in local businesses adapting to the e-commerce world, both Shoraka and Weisstein knew it was time to expand their reach and connect with other types of local businesses to help them grow online. “This gave us an idea and made us realize that a lot of the small businesses we rely on didn’t have

As more and more businesses continue to transition into more online-based platforms, the services that Promenade provides will only be more in demand. “We’ve had other businesses reach out to us asking for help with their online presences, and I hope that we will continue to expand and offer more software to other verticals as well,” Weisstein said. promenade.co

Following the successful initiative, RE:Her recently announced a COVID-19 relief grant program to support women-owned restaurants in Los Angeles. The program is sponsored by DoorDash and RE:Her will distribute 15 $10,000 cash grants to female food and beverage entrepreneurs in LA County. Recipients can use the grants to bolster their businesses however they see fit, and they will also receive access to consulting and mentorship from specialists in restaurant finance, HR and PR/ marketing. It launched earlier this year with the mission to provide opportunities, as well as financial and educational resources, to female business owners. Applications for the grant program will be accepted from May 17 to 23. Grant recipients will be announced on June 14. Meet the Chef 10 questions with Hotel June’s Chef de Cuisine Angie Lee
How did you become a chef? I learned to be a chef through mentors and experience from working in various kitchens.
Most important thing you learned in culinary school? Mise en place, which means “putting everything in its place.” It’s very important to be organized in the kitchen. I strongly believe it’s the foundation, as well as time management. What’s the first dish you learned to make really well? I learned to make soups very well. To me, comfort food is in soups. Learning to make soups well then led me to making sauces well. Sauces are everything to me. Signature dish you’re known for? My current signature dish at Caravan Swim Club would be the Baja shrimp tacos. And of course it would include two different “sauces” as well as the salsa verde that it’s paired with. Favorite ingredient to cook with and why? My favorite ingredient is garlic. I love garlic – it could be my Korean background. But I always feel like there’s something missing from a dish when there’s no garlic. I like to roast it, confit it, pickle it or grill it. You can definitely see me adding it to any of my soups.
The menu at Caravan Swim Club features vibrant dishes including local caught grilled dish, seasonal salads and more. me and every chef I’ve worked for. There was always something to learn from each and every one of them. That’s the great part of the culinary world, it’s a world where you pass on techniques and knowledge to the next chef and it keeps going and spreading.
enjoy the food I make. It makes all the hard work rewarding. If you could have a meal with anyone, who would it be? To be honest, eating with my family makes me the happiest. It’s because of them I truly became inspired to be a chef.
What do you love about being a chef? I love seeing and hearing people

coveted externship at three-star Michelin Restaurant Martin Berasategui. Lee previously held positions at the five-star Peninsula Beverly Hills and the Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel, where she expedited dinner service for THEBlvd Restaurant and Lounge. Lee further honed her culinary and large-scale event management skills as Sous Chef at The London West Hollywood, in addition to planning innovative, health-conscious and seasonal menus as Chef de Cuisine at Santa Monica Proper Hotel. We chatted with Lee, who shared what sparked her initial interest in the culinary arts, the signature dish she’s best known for, the kitchen tool she can’t live without and more. What got you interested in cooking? As a kid, I always loved trying out recipes and creating dishes for my family. My mom cooked mostly Korean food so I would try making “American” food. In high school, my mom became a single mom and I started cooking for my brothers. They would tell me that they got tired of the same thing for dinner so I started to experiment and cook more. I would watch them clean their plates and it would make me happy to watch them enjoy the food I made. This continued in college when I cooked for my roommates.
Kitchen tool you can’t live without? Definitely a nice sharp knife. Dull knives are the worst. Who do you look up to in the culinary world? I look up to all the chefs before

Celebrating Los Angeles Viva LA to host launch event in Venice for 10,000 Flags Project PHOTOS COURTESY OF VIVA LA
By Kamala Kirk On May 31, Viva LA is hosting a special launch event in Venice Beach to kick off its 10,000 Flags Project and new line of All-City apparel. Designed for those that want to show off their local pride and take a piece of Los Angeles home, the apparel collection includes T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats and more. 100% of profits go right back into creating more events for LA communities. Viva LA is a new brand created for LA that celebrates the power of collaboration and the dynamic individuals that make up the City of Angels including native Angelenos, transplants and visitors. It launched back in February with its “Celebrate LA, Every Day” show in DTLA’s Pershing Square. The brand is inspired by acclaimed LA artist Andre Miripolsky, who created the iconic piano key costume that Elton John wore for his Central Park performance in 1980. Miripolsky coined the phrase, “Viva LA!” which is featured on the brand’s apparel and accessories. Together with entrepreneur Christian Mitman of BIX Art Group, Miripolsky and a world-class team of talent joined forces to create and launch Viva LA. “We will be giving away 1,000 flags over three days, as well as free Viva LA apparel to everyone who follows and tags @vivalaofficial on the day of the event,” Mitman said. “Memorial Day is also when we are kicking off our 10,000 flags project, so we will have ambassadors introducing the local businesses to the Viva LA brand and the benefits of joining together to promote LA at home and around the world.” From noon to 2 p.m., the event will take place at the entrance to Venice Beach and the boardwalk at Winward Avenue. From 2 to 4 p.m., the event will continue on the 1300 block of Abbot Kinney Boulevard. There will also be a Viva LA HeartWings photo op wall and Viva LA will provide “Viva LA Venice Beach” flags to every retailer on Abbot Kinney with an invitation to fly them on Memorial Day and beyond in solidarity and in support of their local Venice community. The idea behind these first live Viva LA events is simply to share with our fellow Angelenos that we have a new brand to unify us – from one end of LA to the other – and to give us hope and a belief that the future will be bigger and brighter than before.” For more information, visit vivala.us and follow on Instagram @vivalaofficial

GLADSTONES’ GOLDEN ERA Iconic restaurant celebrates the past, present and future PHOTO BY LUIS CHAVEZ
Popular beachside establishment Gladstones, which turns 50 next year, is known for its fresh seafood menu and has the largest patio for outdoor dining on the Malibu coast. full service when they surprisingly reopened the world in February. Since then, we have been following all of the local and state health ordinances and protocols, and making the best of the situation. We were thrilled to have the support of our friends and fans throughout the pandemic. Now as we are on the verge of returning to a normal life this summer, it is our pleasure to serve the community that has supported us through thick and thin!” Gladstones’ fresh seafood has always been its hallmark, and a decades-long relationship with Santa Monica Seafood and other purveyors gives the restaurant access to the freshest and most ethically sourced products for guests. From Raw Bar Towers piled high with shrimp and shellfish to steaks, chicken and many delicious vegetable options, Gladstones’ menu has something for everyone to enjoy. “A staple for our longtime guests is the Gladstones’ clambake with crab legs, lobster, linguica sausage, seasonal vegetables and a bushel of clams served family style in a large steamer pot,” Harris said. “This dish really takes you back to a simpler time here on the golden California coast.” Aside from making it through the pandemic stronger than ever, Gladstones has much to celebrate. 2022 will mark the restaurant’s 50-year anniversary, and to kick
off Memorial Day this year, Gladstones will host its third Annual Oceanfest on May 29 from 3 p.m. to sundown. The event is family-friendly and free for the entire community, and will be held on the restaurant’s new extended patio. Event sponsors include Gilly’s American Lager, and Gladstones will feature tropical tiki drinks showcasing Diplomatico Rum. In addition to live entertainment, full food and drink menus will be served throughout the day with tropical specials to complement the occasion. “Enjoy a Pina Colada served in a coconut or a Mai Tai served in a pineapple by the fire in our Tiki Garden dubbed the “rum haven” for the sunny months ahead,” Harris said. “We will be featuring surf rock aficionados The Royal Rats as they bring their sunny vibes to Sunset Beach, and there may be a few surprise guests along the way, like members of the LA Giltinis Major League Rugby team and their Gilly Girls cheerleading squad!” Gladstones is also unveiling its latest run of newly branded apparel on Memorial Day, which will include plenty of soft, comfy sweatshirts and retro colors to help guests remember their time at the beach. The process of creating a new logo was truly a collaborative process that included the help of several employees and friends. Photogra-
pher Shane Selsnick, a young Gladstones employee, shot a picture of Truey Reise, another team member, riding a wave out front with Malibu in the background. “We have the good fortune to have some of the nicest team members ever who went to the local schools and grew up surfing the point out front,” Harris pointed out. “We call them the ‘Beach Boys’ and they are a pleasure to have on the team. Shane is a talented photographer and certified Gladstones legacy. His grandfather, Gene Selsnick,
was a volleyball legend and ran the parking lot out front in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Shane’s dad, Dane, is an Olympic beach volleyball coach who trains future hopefuls in Santa Monica. We have taken the image that Shane took and made it our symbol of the past and the present, coming together to give us positive energy as we move into the future.” Harris added that the incredible team at Gladstones is the other big reason why the business has continued to thrive year after year for almost half a century. “The people that make this venture possible include our managers Alex Peniston, Paul Williams, Vivian Escamilla and Felipe Ortega,” Harris shared. “Our tireless and passionate chefs: Juan Aquino, Eric Velasquez, Rolando Mejia and Benjamin Diosdado, as well as an amazing group of servers, bartenders, bussers, runners, cooks and dishwashers, many of whom have been here for decades. Most importantly, we would be nowhere without our team captain and fearless leader, Richard J. Riordan. His love of this city and the community that Gladstones represents is unparalleled. Thank you, Mayor!” For more information, visit gladstones.com PHOTO COURTESY OF THE ROYAL RATS
By Kamala Kirk Open since 1972, Gladstones restaurant is a Southern California landmark and institution that has stood the test of time. Owned by former Los Angeles mayor Richard Riordan, the popular beachside establishment in the Pacific Palisades has built a reputation for high-quality food, excellent service and its commitment to the community. When COVID-19 first occurred, the restaurant and hospitality industries were immediately impacted, and Gladstones was forced to close its doors for two weeks, which turned into three months. “At the beginning of 2020 we were off to an amazing start, business was booming and we were poised to have a very successful year,” said Jim Harris, general manager of Gladstones. “Upon shutting down, we actually thought there was a chance we would not reopen.” A few months after initially closing its doors, Gladstones was ready to reopen and rebuild. When the CDC announced that restaurants could only operate outdoors, Gladstones – which has the largest outdoor patio for dining on the Malibu Coast complete with an outdoor bar – was able to continue serving customers and worked hard to maintain a sense of normalcy for guests and employees. “Despite fires, floods, El Ninos and global pandemics, somehow Gladstones refuses to give up,” Harris said. “The world has changed a lot, but we continue to embrace the tradition and legacy of hospitality, Southern California style!” While gearing up for Thanksgiving last year with hundreds of reservations booked, things started to close down again, but this time Gladstones decided to remain open through the shutdown and launched its successful Bring Your Own Blanket (BYOB) program. “Guests would pick up their meals at the entrance and picnic at the beach out front,” Harris said. “Staying open was really helpful as it allowed us to pivot back to

LOS ANGELES TIMES SUNDAY CROSSWORD PUZZLE “ELEMENTARY” By DAVID P. WILLIAMS
FRAUD PRINCE I broke up with a guy I was dating after discovering he’d lied about his age on the dating app we’d met on. (He’s 48, not “39.”) I’d told him honesty is a big deal for me. He claimed he’s honest with those he cares about and at work, and argued that everybody lies on dating sites. I’m not buying that. Isn’t someone either honest or not? — Skeptical There’s that saying, “Act your age,” and he is – as a guy cresting 50 who wants a girlfriend who still sometimes gets carded. Chances are you consider yourself an honest person. But you’re not. None of us are. In the words of TV’s Dr. House, “Everybody lies.” Social psychologist Bella DePaulo concurs. In her research on lying, she explains that people can’t be “tossed into one of two moral bins, one for the people who are honest and the other for the liars.” In fact, we all lie in ways we don’t even recognize as lies. Do you wear control-top tights or Spanx? A push-up bra or a squish-you-down bra? How about under-eye concealer? (Note that it isn’t called under-eye revealer: “All the better to show off my
ginormous, dark, puffy eyebags!”) These less-than-truthful forms of self-presentation are a lighter shade of the lie this guy told: an “instrumental” lie – a lie used as an “instrument” to get others to give us “material rewards or other personal pleasures or advantages” they wouldn’t if we told the truth. But consider that people who don’t lie their way through life might see lies in an online dating profile as sort of Spanx-type fibbies: a way to game an unfair system, a la, “I’m so much younger than my real age, and the hot young women I want would see that – uh, if only I could get around their searches where they cut out my age group.” Getting a realistic sense of a man’s true character probably takes listening and watching over time, especially when he doesn’t know you’re doing it. That should help you avoid missing out on good guys who occasionally retrofit the truth with a little Spandex. And you’ll know to ditch those who are ethically iffy – or worse: for example, some other 48-year-old dude who has the firm body of a man half his age – and if he keeps it in his basement freezer, no one will be the wiser.
TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THONG I’m a senior in college, and the woman I recently started seeing is a sophomore. My buddies told me she has a “reputation,” as in, she’s hooked up with half the men’s soccer team. She’s beautiful and intelligent, and I don’t understand why she has the low self-esteem to behave that way. — Rethinking Our Relationship Turn the tables, and imagine a guy who’s hooked up with half the cheerleading squad. Your first thought: “Dude must have a huge...” (and correct me if I’m wrong) “...set of mommy issues.” There’s a pervasive stereotype (held by both men and women) that women who engage in casual sex have low self-esteem, explains evolutionary social psychologist Jaimie Arona Krems. The underlying assumption: Women who have casual sex don’t really want it; they’re just settling for it. However, Krems and her colleagues find that this insulting stereotype persists even when women are “explicitly described as choosing to have casual sex.” The researchers surveyed participants (about their own self-esteem and their perception of others’) using the generally accepted definition of self-esteem: “Feeling good about oneself and having a solid sense of one’s self-worth.” The stereotype – that women have casual sex because their
self-worth is in the dumpster – “appears to be unfounded.” (Women’s “sexual behavior was not significantly correlated with their self-esteem.”) They speculate that the stereotype might stem from evolutionary “mismatch”: our living in a modern world with a sometimes-outdated psychological operating system. The psychology guiding us today evolved back when locked knees were the only reliable birth control. It would’ve served ancestral women with high mate value – those with their pick of men – to hold out for commitment before having sex (and possibly offspring) with a man. Thus, we might have “default assumptions that women pursue casual sex only when committed sex is unavailable to them.” (In simple terms, despite all the birth control technology of today, the dial of human psychology is still set to “slut shaming.”) As for your situation, assuming the rumors aren’t just “guy-perbole,” maybe your girlfriend worked her way through the soccer boys not because she’s a human broken toy but because she’s hot, enjoys sex, and wanted some naked fun while looking for her Mr. Boyfriend. What does this say about her? Well, after the initial steamy phase of the relationship, the sort of animal she’s most like in bed probably won’t be shrink-wrapped supermarket salmon.
