Give Up Neglecting Students (GUNS) By Yvette Martini y last teaching job at a charter school ended in February where I taught first and secondgraders. In the few months that I worked there, we had a lockdown due to a shooter near campus that I was unaware of because I had gone to the restroom just prior to the announcement that didn’t reach the restroom. When I exited, no one was around and I had to step outside to get back to my classroom not knowing I may have been in mortal danger. When I brought it up to the principal, she told me I did the right thing by going back to my classroom where I found out we were on lockdown. The danger prior to getting there was only addressed as I should have known something was wrong and my action fit the situation. Nothing more was said about this incident. Really? Another time, a first-grader proudly told me his father was
M
going to buy him a gun for his seventh birthday. He said he watched his father at shooting practice and couldn’t wait to shoot too. I brought this concern to the principal, who weeks later informed me she had spoken to the child’s father who denied ever saying he
would buy a gun for his son, so the matter was dropped. Really? 95% of the students at this school were Hispanic, fed breakfast and lunch there without cost to the parents due to the families’ poverty level status. However, students came to school on Mondays with new
toys, new clothes and bragged about their video games, most of which were violent. But their assigned reading homework was missing. When I asked for a meeting with the parents to establish accountability for their children’s homework and I wanted
to say instead of spending money on trinkets and toys, consider buying books for them instead, I was told by the principal to eliminate that comment because the families may be offended. Really? One morning, I was writing a math problem on the whiteboard located at the rear of the classroom, so my back faced the students. When I turned to return to the front of the classroom, a boy turned his hand into a gun and pretended to shoot me in the back. The class tattletale told me this and several others confirmed his act, but the culprit denied it. I asked for a meeting with the principal with this student present and after interrogating him, he finally admitted he did it, at which point the principal praised him for his honesty and the meeting concluded. Parents were not contacted and nothing more occurred. Other students would often gesture guns with their hands and pretend to shoot

each other when they didn’t like what another had said or done. Children mimic what they see and hear. Who is monitoring their influences? Teachers are limited, rendered ineffective, symbolically handcuffed to do anything because we are told not to make waves, not to upset the parents, urged to avoid confrontation especially if it can be linked to racism and now, homosexuality. So, who is accountable? Too many parents don’t even take responsibility to make sure their children do their homework, let alone monitor what they watch on TV, see at the movies, or what video games they play. Yes, we must have background checks before selling guns to anyone under 21 years old nationwide, but we probably should have background checks for the parents of those whose offspring buy them too. Negligent homicide should be considered charged to those parents who neglect having their underage mentally ill children treated or at the very least, charged with child abuse
for neglecting any behavior that leads to gun violence. Why? Because if someone wants to carry out a mass murder, they can buy guns at the store, get them illegally on the black market, or steal them from their parents among other scenarios. Get real, people! Our country proudly identifies as a land of freedom, but now we are witnessing the freedom to commit mass murder. This is reality, not a video game, not a TV show or a movie, and those who commit these heinous crimes are acting out with an unhealthy mind, disconnected to humanity, and instead, connected to insanity. Thank you, Ronald Reagan, for closing all mental institutions. Thank you, gun lobbyists, who are more vested in protecting their firearms than protecting children. Hunters kill innocent animals for sport. Children are not animals. Wake up, America, and face reality! Gun lobbyists, please re-evaluate your priorities and listen to your heart, search your soul and do what is right, do it right now!”

Housing the Homeless
Rose Apartments celebrates grand opening By Kamala Kirk enice Community Housing (VCH) has announced the opening of Rose Apartments, a new permanent supportive housing development located at 720 Rose Avenue in Venice. On May 19, a grand opening celebration was held and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti spoke at the event, accompanied by LA Councilmember Mike Bonin. Other key partners in attendance included Ann Sewill from the LA Housing Department, Angie Brooks from Brooks + Scarpa, and tenants and staff from Rose Apartments. Rose Apartments is a 35-unit property providing homes to people who were experiencing homelessness. 50% of the homes are specifically for Transitional Aged Youth ages 18 to 24, a first of its kind in Venice. The remaining 50% of

the homes are for households with disabilities. The four-story building consists of 35 homes, VCH administrative officers, on-site staff offices, parking for cars and bikes, a laundry room, a large community room and courtyard, and many sustainability features. Supportive housing helps establish and maintain stability and health, reduces public costs, and contributes to inclusive and equitable development neighborhoods. “Venice Community Housing is proud to have completed and leased these much-needed homes for people who have been unhoused for far too long, and excited that the Venice community is contributing to solutions to homelessness, after a 20-year gap in new 100% affordable housing construction,” said Becky Dennison, executive director of VCH.

Bringing Awareness to Alzheimer’s Disease
Westside attorney David Glass is reappointed as organization’s board chair By Michele Robinson n 1980, Jerome Stone took decisive action when his wife was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. While he is often credited with creating the Alzheimer’s Association, this disease was not brought to the forefront until President Ronald Reagan got involved later that same year. Over the next 40 years, the nonprofit organization has grown into a nationwide program, offering free resources and services to patients, their families and caregivers. Currently there are 6.5 million people living with this progressive debilitating ailment. One of the first established chapters of the Alzheimer’s Association was located in Los Angeles. “During the past two years, there has not been even a five-minute period where a caregiver or person living with dementia has not had immediate access to association

services despite current events,” said Meg Barron, current regional leader and executive director of the California Southland Chapter. The Alzheimer’s Association prides itself on being able to provide a free 24-hour/ seven-day a week helpline (1-800-272-3900) staffed with masters-level clinicians who are ready and able to answer any related questions. The service is open to anyone and people can call at any time to receive accurate and useful information. Additionally, the Alzheimer’s website offers useful resources including videos for the caregivers and those suffering from the disease. Other resources include access to free hybrid support groups which people can attend in person or virtually. All of these resources are free to the public due to fundraising events like the Purple Spring
Gala and the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The first in-person Purple Spring Gala since 2019 took place on April 28 with around 150 celebrity guests, influential community and business leaders in attendance. All proceeds were used to fund the Alzheimer’s Association free resources, education, research and advocacy. “One of the goals of the gala is to help bring awareness to the disease,” Barron said. “Anyone can have access to the resources we provide.” Additionally, the local chapter hosts 13 walks across the territory, one of which will take place on November 5, 2022 at the LA Zoo at 7 a.m. The walk is free to participate in. Individuals and companies are encouraged to support it through fundraising efforts and donating prizes. “It is our largest fundraiser,” Barron said. “It brings the community together, especially

families struggling with this disease.” Another important aspect to keep the Alzheimer’s Association running smoothly is their reliance on volunteers. “With 28 staff members in the LA area, it is not enough,” Barron said. “We need volunteers to lead the change.” One outstanding volunteer is David Glass, a father of four and a managing partner at Enenstein Pham & Glass, LLP, a Westside law firm, where he serves as chair of the firm’s family law department. He also authored the Amazon bestselling book “Moving On,” which focuses on how people rebuild their lives the year after their divorce. Before he worked in law, he was a therapist who treated adults with addiction and mental illness. Even with all of his accomplishments, Glass dedicates his time to volunteer with the
Alzheimer’s Association due a personal connection. Glass’ first legal mentor in Philadelphia suffered from the disease. “My mentor had an incredible memory,” Glass said. “Within seven years of my moving to LA, he started to forget things. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and passed away a year later. It was very tragic.” For the past two years, Glass has held the distinct position as the California Southland Chapter Board of Directors Chair and works behind the scenes to help the organization run smoothly. He was three months into his role as chair when the pandemic hit. That was when his leadership skills emerged, prompting Glass to take extraordinary measures. “It’s my job to make sure this chapter always thrives in any situation, particularly for those facing Alzheimer’s and their caregivers,” Glass said. Some of Glass’ responsibili-

ties included keeping the 24-hour helpline open during the pandemic when the SafeAt-Home orders were in effect. Under his leadership, the chapter launched an additional 40+ online and telephone support groups, including webinars. By adopting the Zoom platform, they were able to increase their outreach capacity and offer four times as many support groups. Since people did not have to drive to attend the meetings, this method proved most effective. “David immediately went into action to ensure that free access to support and advocacy were not just maintained, but grew to meet the demanding need created by the pandemic,” Barron said. “Thanks to David’s strategic foresight, no one needed to face Alzheimer’s alone, even when so many businesses were closing their doors.” Glass also oversaw the Walk to End Alzheimer’s twice and took on the role as the Southland’s Chair for the recent Purple Spring Gala event. “We are all walking together for a great cause,” Glass said.

For the first time ever, Glass will be reappointed as chair for another year. After his current term limits expire, he will use the additional year to train someone to step in. His future vision also includes increasing research funding in LA to find a cure for the disease. “My work, quite simply, was not done,” Glass said. “We needed to support those in need through COVID, and we also needed to grow our services, advocacy and research to ensure Alzheimer’s support is always available in our Southland communities.” The Alzheimer’s Association is actively looking for more volunteers to help bring awareness and visibility to the disease. “It was a difficult year with Covid,” Bledsoe said. Both Ellis and Conner are volleyball players, while Hawkins plays basketball. All three will continue playing their selected sport in college. Their passion for the game is also evident in their college majors. “I’m majoring in cosmetology and minoring in sports management,” Hawkins said. Hawkins plans to attend Santa Monica College in the fall and then transfer to a four-year college. Her future dreams include trying to earn a scholarship to play at a Division 1 college. Playing basketball since she was 4 years old, Hawkins earned All Conference, All League Awards and played Amature Athletic Union for two years and four years of travel ball. Originally from St. Paul, Minnesota, she is a recent transplant to Los Angeles and transferred to St. Bernard for her senior year. Having attended three high schools, including Cretin-Derham Hall in Minnesota, she is used to being on the move. At CDH she played center, but at St. Bernard she switched to the position of forward shooting guard. She welcomes the change because Hawkins said she “learns different

By Michele Robinson t. Bernard High School in Playa Del Rey has something to cheer about. It’s not every day that three of their female athletes sign commitments to continue playing sports in college. On May 19, seniors Jazmine Hawkins, Holiday Ellis and Zindzhi Conner showed up for the signings. “They all worked extremely hard,” said Coach Cheyenne Bledsoe. Bledsoe is the volleyball coach at the private Catholic high school. This year marks her first year coaching at the school, but she has eight years of previous coaching experience. Prior to St. Bernard, she was the head coach at Dorsey High School and assistant coach at Glendale Community College. As for many people, Covid proved challenging this year, and these young athletes were no exception. Some of the challenges they endured included trying to focus on playing when whole classes were out due to exposure to a positive case. This meant having to be flexible and shifting their schedules. Sometimes the team had to play three games in a row in one week, instead of the usual one or two games.
Jazmine Hawkins, Holiday Ellis and Zindzhi Conner are three high school athletes from St. Bernard High School in Playa del Rey who recently signed commitments to continue playing sports in college. techniques.” Her motto is, “Win with class, lose with class.” A lesson she learned to live by from her fifth grade coach, Steve Prioleau, where she played travel ball with the SugAA ballers, which is part of the Summit University Girls Athletic Association. Besides basketball, Hawkins’ passion also includes writing. When she was younger she wanted to be a journalist. Coming from a long line of a strong Mexican-American background, she even wrote an original poem about her heritage. “My poem is about four generations in my family: my great grandma, grandma, my mom, me and my sister,” Hawkins said. “And how it was hard being a Mexican-American growing up. But also the beauty of it too, being half-American and half-Mexican. Being too white for the Mexicans and too Mexican for the whites, and trying to fit into a world where you are both.” “We are so very proud of Jazmine,” said her parents Hugh and Ashley. “She has fought through so much adversity from injuries to moving to learning under several coaches, and she has taken all of that and crafted her own story, which has led her to this moment and all the great ones ahead.” Ellis described herself as “born playing volleyball.” It’s in her blood; both her mother and older sister played the sport. “I’m her biggest cheerleader,” said her mother Le Nece Nichols. Showing great potential over the years, Ellis is already a seasoned player. Her main positions include playing outside and opposite (right side). Since eighth grade, she played with the Sunshine Volleyball Club and her team won first in the USA Division. Attending St. Bernard since ninth grade, she started on varsity as a freshman. With her on the team, they won First Team All League and All California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section in 2019.
After high school, Ellis plans to attend the University of Arkansas at Monticello and major in social and behavioral psychology with a minor in cybersecurity. Due to her strong academics and athletic abilities, she earned two scholarships for college, including the Principal’s Honor Roll Scholarship. She also wants to play on a volleyball team overseas when she graduates from college. Ellis has a big heart, which is evident in the fact that she started a donation drive with her best friend called Operation Holiday Joy. Together, they collected toiletries and other essential items for pregnant teenage mothers. Ellis’ motto is “Always be great and let go and let God.” Conner is also pursuing her volleyball career in college. She began playing in elementary school and has played club for six years. For high school, she started at Notre Dame Academy as a freshman and played on their freshman-sophomore team. Transferring to St. Bernard as a sophomore, she transitioned to playing on their varsity team during her sophomore year, where she continues to play the middle blocker position. Her college plans include attending Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi. She wants to pursue a career in social work and her other interests include helping her sister make a short film and cooking. Conner’s motto is, “To always be the best middle on the court,” which she learned from her father Kobie, who was also an athlete. “Her mother and I are extremely proud of her drive and continued efforts as a student athlete,” Kobie said. “Zindzhi played through injury and a pandemic to get this far. We expect nothing but continued success for Zindzhi at Tougaloo and beyond.” St. Bernard High School stbernardhs.org

Giving Dogs a Second Chance By Haley Beyer Purposeful Rescue was founded in 2013 by Hillary Rosen after she visited a shelter and saw just how many dogs needed help. “I was shell-shocked from the amount of dogs,” Rosen said. “I had never been to a shelter, but I randomly got this email and decided to go. After that day, I started going daily.” The first dog she adopted was a Rottweiler Pitbull mix. From that point on, Rosen took every opportunity to save dogs and the rescue was born. A Purposeful Rescue pulls from the surrounding six city shelters and seven county shelters. Right now they focus on LA because there are thousands of dogs in the area that need care, love and a home. The rescue does their best to pull dogs from shelters that need the most help. “We do not pick dogs just because they are old, sick or a specific breed,” Rosen said. “We rescue dogs that need us.” If a dog has been at the shelter for a while and has still not been adopted because of its age, they will pull it and find a foster. If a dog needs medical attention, it can be pulled, given the treatment needed and then placed in a home. Often at shelters, dogs’ true personalities don’t shine because of their environment. The rescue helps the dogs by giving them safe and loving foster homes where they are able to come out of their shells and learn to trust people again. “The worst part of my job is having to witness the failures of humans,” Rosen said. “Humans fail dogs. They do not put in the effort to understand what their dog needs. Dogs are also expected to be perfect. They are not given second chances or provided the opportunity to fix things. Dogs need love, care and help just like humans.” These dogs are what A Purposeful Rescue calls a “magical unicorn.” Rosen came up with the term one day when she was talking about a young sweet German Shepherd with a medical issue and it caught on. A magical unicorn dog is an overlooked underdog that has the potential to be great and just needs help blossoming into something beautiful. “It is remarkable to see the dogs start out one way when we first take them in, and then watch them become the dog they really are,” Rosen said. “They love life again.” A Purposeful Rescue currently has enough resources and people on their team to have about 30 dogs in foster homes waiting to be adopted. They also have 10 dogs that are forever fosters. Forever fosters are dogs that were once waiting to be adopted, but are now permanently in their foster homes. The faster the dogs get adopted, more dogs can be rescued from the shelters and be put
A
PAGE 12 THE ARGONAUT JUNE 2, 2022
into the foster homes. A Purposeful Rescue is not a shelter and they don’t have a facility where the dogs stay. In order to be able to remove a dog from a shelter, they must have an available foster home. The rescue is always looking for people to join their team and open their homes to foster dogs in need. Potential volunteers must fill out the foster application, a mandatory home check is necessary for the safety of the dog, and then they will be matched to a dog. The matching of the foster to the dog is based on their personality, and what the foster can manage in terms of care from exercise to medical attention and so forth. Fostering is a big job and not for everyone, but it is a beautiful experience to be able to help an animal in need. Adopting a dog from a foster home is a similar process. Those interested in adopting must fill out an adoption application, then they will meet the dog and interact with it. If all goes well, they can take their new friend home after conducting a home check to guarantee the dog’s safety. There is an adoption donation to cover the costs associated with rescue, including medical care, microchip, spay/neutering and boarding. The rescue has recently started a new foster support program, Foster for Life, in partnership with Blue Man Dog, I Stand with My Pack, and The Real Bark. This pilot program is in response to the capacity crisis happening in shelters as every location is at or over-capacity. This will help those interested in fostering be supported by providing supplies, training, guidance and adoption promotion using the teams’ resources, trainers and networks. For now, A Purposeful Rescue is focusing on dogs, but they have helped other animals in need including two pigs, several cats and kittens. “We have a really supportive team,” Rosen said. “I love working with everyone and our teamwork to make things happen is amazing. It’s hard work, but it’s fun and rewarding too.” For those that want to help but can’t foster or adopt at the moment, there are other ways to get involved. Volunteering time is always appreciated, as well as helping to fund the rescue by purchasing merchandise, supplies, or making a donation. People are also invited to attend the organization’s various public events, including the weekend adoptions they offer in partnership with Platform in Culver City. Turning Over a New Leaf
Author’s new project shows Los Angeles through a unique lens PHOTO BY CHRIS MORTENSON
Author Mike Robinson has written over 20 books and made his first professional sale when he was 19 years old. By Michele Robinson ocal author Mike Robinson is turning over a new leaf with his current writing project, “The Trailcutter.” Ready for another literary adventure, Robinson is taking a big leap from his usual genre to offer his readers a unique tale of conflict and conservation in the Santa Monica Mountains. “This book will show Los Angeles through the lens of the Santa Monica Mountains,” Robinson said. “Of all the stories that come out of LA, I’ve never seen one that uses its
L
intersection with nature as a centerpiece. And that’s a very unique feature of the city–it’s the only big metropolis in the world bisected by a mountain range, for example.” “The Trailcutter,” which he began writing in January 2022, is inspired by Robinson’s involvement with the Sierra Club’s Santa Monica Mountains Task Force. While touching on themes of eco-consciousness, climate change, habitat loss and wildfires, the story also includes an intriguing murder-mystery angle. The main character is a resident trail-builder, and drawn

from Robinson’s real-life volunteering experiences. “Through the organization, I expanded my knowledge of the trail system here, and more importantly, got to know the people who cut and care for it all,” Robinson said. Up until now, Robinson’s work has largely fallen under the banner of speculative fiction, an umbrella term for all things science-fiction, fantasy and horror. Even so, his familiarity with West LA can be found in several short stories. Examples in his recent collection “Too Much Dark Matter, Too Little Gray”
(released February 2022) include “Hero’s Journey,” which follows an LA-based scientist who, while on a beer run, undergoes a mind-expanding, otherworldly experience. In “Trail,” an avid hiker succumbs to the deceptively beautiful tranquility of an isolated Malibu hike. “The Encroaching” is a dark comic take on LA’s urban wildlife population. And in “Symbols of Atlantis,” a young whale strays into the Marina, ultimately offering a struggling writer an unlikely source of inspiration. Currently living in Culver City, Robinson was raised in Mar Vista. He attended Mar Vista Elementary School and graduated in 1994. At a young age, he showed promise in baseball, writing and art. To this day, Mar Vista Elementary School’s mural of humpbacks and dolphins, which he designed in the third grade for a contest, still sports the signature, “By Mikey and the Kids.” Robinson grew up loving prose, stories and storytelling. As a young baseball player at Mar Vista Park, his initial goal was to one day play professional baseball, which led to him reading baseball stories and eventually writing his own stories. “I enjoy playing in the sandbox of language,” Robinson said. In high school and early college, he briefly rerouted his creative energy into indie video games. For a while he attended Otis College of Art and Design, where he studied illustration. “I knew I wanted to write more than I wanted to draw so I decided to go all in, committing to a book a year,” Robinson said. “But of course, some will never see the light of day.” Over the years, Robinson has written over 20 books. He made his first professional sale in 2004 when he was 19, and at 27 he sold his first novel–which was by no means the first novel he wrote. Currently, he has 10 books published, with five more waiting in the wings. Like many writers, he admits to seeing his share of rejection letters. He even keeps a spreadsheet of them. “I’ve definitely seen more
rejections than acceptances,” Robinson recalls. “But if you have to do it, it doesn’t matter. You do it, and you do it with an eye toward improving every day, every year.” His work has garnered notices and awards from the likes of Writers of the Future, the NextGen Indie Book Awards, the Maxy Awards, Publishers Weekly’s BookLife Contest, and more. In 2013, Robinson met his literary agent Jennifer Azantian of the Azantian Literary Agency in San Diego, at the local West Coast 2 Writer’s Conference. She has since helped shepherd his books and his career. With Hollywood in his backyard, it’s hard for any writer in LA to completely abstain from screenwriting. Robinson co-wrote the script for “Chrysaline,” a short sci-fi thriller that debuted in 2017 at the Louisiana International Film Festival, and which is still making the festival rounds. He also wrote an indie feature, “Blood Corral,” a supernatural Hitchcockian thriller, which remains in post-production. He was noted as a finalist in the 2019 Screencraft Horror Contest for his adaptation of his own novel, “The Prince of Earth,” and as a semi-finalist in the ISA Genre-Busting Script Contest for the eco-horror period feature, “Mortis Radix,” which he co-wrote. With his love of LA’s nature evident, portions of Robinson’s in-progress novel “The Trailcutter” have been written on the Backbone Trail, which extends from Pacific Palisades to northern Malibu. “I hike with a notebook and camping chair,” Robinson said. “I love using the city’s backyard as an office. There are so many nooks and crannies to explore. It’s like multiple corners of the world were tilted up, funneling so much natural and cultural variety here. Though we also got all the traffic, too.” His books can be found as paperbacks, eBooks and audiobooks on Amazon. Visit smmtf. org to learn more about the Santa Monica Mountains Task Force. Harmonizing Art and Nature
Exhibition introduces creator of hobbit houses to Westside PHOTOS BY JOHN DURANT
Through June 18, Helms Bakery District in Culver City is presenting an exhibition of select creations by California-based artist, designer, craftsman and environmentalist James Hubbell. By Bridgette M. Redman hen J.R.R. Tolkien created hobbits, they represented a rejection of industrial sprawl and increasingly urban lifestyles. It is why there seems a clear connection between painter, sculptor and architectural designer, James Hubbell, and these fantasy creatures, and why some of his work has been dubbed “hobbit houses.” An artist whose work of the past 60 years has been installed around the planet, it has come to Los Angeles for the first time in an exhibition that opened on Earth Day at Helms Bakery District in Culver City. “In Harmony with Nature: The Architectural Work of James Hubbell” will be open until June 18 with viewing hours on Friday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The installation introduces Angelenos to work that he has done in the Pacific Rim, Russia, Tijuana, Scotland and his home, Ilan-Lael, near San Diego. Work on display include stained glass windows, paintings, sculptures, stunning doors and other elements. Hubbell has a passion for the ocean and nature. He strives to create work that is in harmony with the earth and rejects its exploitation. “Most important is my infatuation with nature,” Hubbell has said. “There is also my love of the primitive and naïve, gothic architecture, the arts and craft
W
movement, Frank Lloyd Wright, Gaudi, and the pleasure of working with the material of stone, wood, cement, clay, metal, glass and mosaics.” Kyle Bergman has known Hubbell for more than 30 years and is on the board of Hubbell’s foundation, named for his Ilan-Leal home. They met when Bergman was getting his master’s as an architect and was putting together a lecture series for the Smithsonian. He invited Hubbell to speak and they became friends, working on projects all around the world. He said this current exhibit was born when Francis Anderton, who consults often with Helms Bakery, went out to see Hubbell’s home and studio, which the artist has been working on with his wife, Anne, since 1958. It is a fantastical and livable house and studios complex in Santa Ysabel built with organic architecture. “They were just blown away and fell in love with the whole place,” Bergman said. “They loved the idea that Jim as an artist, an architect and a poet was about the hand to touch, the crafts, everything was done by humans. There was an artist’s touch to everything, be it a doorknob or building or everything.” Anderton, the exhibition’s curator, also realized that while Hubbell, who is 91 years old, is well known in San Diego, he doesn’t have that same exposure
The exhibition celebrates Hubbell’s signature style of organic architecture made from natural materials that provide shelter and inspiration for those who wish to live in harmony with nature.
in LA. This will be Hubbell’s first real exhibition there. The focus is on his art and architecture, but it recognizes that Hubbell is multi-talented and works in many different mediums. “The idea was to show the scope of the work that he’s done, from buildings to doorknobs to everything in between and paintings,” Bergman said. “It was really trying to say, here’s some of the best of Jim Hubbell. It’s just scratching the surface. But it is really kind of like, here’s a number of different pieces focusing on art and architecture and design. Here’s a sampler plate, hoping that you will like it so much that you’ll go and explore more of Jim Hubbell’s work.” The exhibition is one that Bergman hopes people will come out to because it can open them up to Hubbell’s world and philosophy. All his work has been informed by nature, but he isn’t just a mimic or a creator of still lifes. “Jim has a singular vision,” Bergman said. “You can never copy nature, but you can be inspired by it. Jim has a whole lifetime of being inspired by nature, by its complexity and how things are interconnected.” He described Hubbell’s work with the idea of things being feathered together, not slamming against each other. “It’s like the ocean and the waves in the sand and the tide,”
Bergman said. “They just kind of come in and out and they harmonize with each other. They flow into each other. It’s the way Jim thinks about life.” Bergman has watched Hubbell’s work evolve over the years, observing that Hubbell is continuously exploring and pushing himself in different ways. There are now 17 buildings on their Ilan Lael property, with the first one being built in 1958. It is what Bergman calls a fairly simple, squarish building that was both elegant and modest. As the buildings progress, they become more organic and fluid, and Hubbell took more risks with them as he became more in control of his art. He is also a man who has led what Bergman calls “an authentic life.” He does art because he loves doing art—it is like breathing for him. Even now when he has moved into a community apartment where it is easier for him to get around, he’s painting and drawing every day. “It’s just how he processes the world,” Bergman said. “We all need to live in a way that is more authentic to who we are and not worry so much about how the outside world looks at us. If you look at Jim Hubbell and how he lived his life and his wife Anne, the choices they’ve made are really inspiring.” Bergman pointed out that he’s done volunteer projects in poor communities. He’s designed and
built two schools in an underserved neighborhood in Tijuana, Mexico known as Colonia Esperanza. Bergman and Hubbell have built parks all around the Pacific Rim, starting in Vladivostok in 1994. “We do these design and build projects with architecture students who come together from around the Pacific to design and build a park and work together,” Bergman said. “They become this idea of cultural diplomacy. We’ve done seven so far, but our goal is to do a park in every country that touches the Pacific.” In addition to the one in Russia, they’ve done one in China, Taiwan, the United States, Philippines, Mexico and Korea. “Art and beauty can bridge prejudices, build lasting friendships, change people’s visions of who they are and what is possible in life, and, in fact, change our myths,” Hubbell said. It is what the Helms Bakery District hopes people will discover when they come out to explore the work of the man known for his hobbit houses.

Dracula’s Bride of Horror
Venice resident donates blood to fund indie vampire film By Scott Baumgartner t a young age, Tim Lee found himself fascinated with Universal’s stable of beloved monsters, namely Frankenstein and, of course, Dracula. Since, the Venice resident has found a very special way to celebrate everybody’s favorite blood-sucking ghoul— creating indie vampire movies. Lee, or Rockula Prince of Rockness as Venice locals know him, created his first Dracula film in China entitled “Dracula Vampyre in Beijing,” with half-Chinese and half-English dialogue. Soon, he decided to turn this standalone vampire tale into a trilogy. There was just one problem: the COVID-19 pandemic dawned upon the world, disrupting Lee’s plans. “Ironically, I survived by donating plasma along with unemployment from my last horror acting job,” Lee says. “I saved every penny I could and decided to make the movie when the pandemic was ending. When the time was right, Lee and a group of friends began rehearsing on Zoom, then filmed “Dracula’s Bride of Horror” in and around Venice and Santa Monica, carefully working to ensure everyone was taking precautions on set and felt comfortable following the global spread of Covid. The result, according to Lee, is a film that is both playful and poignant. “The new Dracula movie is all about America,” he said. “This country has serious problems, and there is a genuine concern here about what is the truth and what is concocted. This movie deals with these issues. Of course, the theme of reality versus illusion has been the obsession of many artists, but, in our society today, it’s taken on a new meaning.” Lee shared that his love of Dracula stems from a desire to understand human behavior, especially the challenging, inexplicable parts. “Above all, Dracula signifies power, the power over life and death,” Lee said. “He possesses dark psychological links to our deepest taboos and myths. He is beyond human definition and understanding. So when actors reduce him to a campy or romantic figure, they risk

Fellow local Deperados and China’s Silent Resentment help fill out the horror film’s soundscape. Next in the process comes trying to find distribution for his film on the Transylvanian immortal’s visit to the City of Angels. With his last project, “Filmhub,” a Santa Monicabased distributor picked it up, leading to streaming on apps like Tubi. This time around, he’s hoping to finding a home for his film that understands good horror movies. “Of course, the distribution landscape has changed since the pandemic—and I am about to take the plunge,” Lee shared. “I have a target list of a number of distributors. I would say—in a perfect world—I would like to build an association with Blumhouse (“The Purge,”
“Sinister,” “Insidious,” “Paranormal Activity”). They make good horror movies and could support my growth as an artist.” And when this project is wrapped, Lee is more than ready to tackle the last film of the trilogy, which will feature the literary count visiting a rainier region of America. “I want to shoot the third in Seattle,” Lee said. When asked about the eternal relevance, as well as his own attraction to the character’s story, Lee said, “Why is the moth drawn to the light? Dracula and Frankenstein are from my earliest memories during formative years of childhood. Of course, I am talking about Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff. They introduced me to horror. They are archetypes of film horror.”

THE ARGONAUT REAL ESTATE Q&A
What Should You Know If You Inherit a House? Inheriting a house can bring about a range of emotions. You might feel sad because it likely means you’ve lost a loved one. It can also be overwhelming to know what steps you should take next and what the financial implications are. It can also be exciting because a house can be a huge asset. So what should your first steps be if you inherit a house? You essentially have three options if you find yourself in this situation. You can sell it, move into it or rent it to someone. Initial Considerations First, when you inherit a house, you’ll have to think about the legal and financial responsibilities that come with it. There may be debt obligations, for example. You also have to think about the tax liabilities that come with inheriting property, which may include capital gains and federal estate taxes. If you inherit a home, there’s no federal inheritance tax, but some states have an inheritance tax. In most cases, you don’t automatically face a tax liability if you inherit property.
Capital gains are taxes linked to the profit you generate from an asset, including a house. If you sell the home, you may be subject to capital gains taxes. You could pay taxes on the difference between the fair market value when you inherited a home and the selling price. If you keep the home, you might be eligible for an exclusion. Is There Currently a Mortgage? If you inherit a home that’s paid for, you have fewer financial considerations to weigh. If the property has an open mortgage, you might assume it, which would mean you take over the payments as an heir and you pay off the debt based on the original terms of the mortgage. Some loans, including reverse mortgages, require that the unpaid balance is due either when the loan holder passes away or upon sale. That would mean as an heir, if there is an open reverse mortgage, you would be required to sell the home and then settle the remaining debt. Did You Inherit a House with Your Siblings?
PAGE 18 AT HOME – THE ARGONAUT’S REAL ESTATE SECTION JUNE 2, 2022
A common and also complicating scenario occurs if multiple siblings or other family members all inherit a house. This means multiple opinions might be part of the decision as to what to do with the property.
whether it makes good financial sense to do so.
If there are multiple stakeholders, then options include a buyout. In this case, if one sibling wants to keep the home for whatever reason, they can buy the other sibling out.
If there aren’t debt obligations, you may be able to sell your current home and move in without worrying about taking on debt.
One of the simplest things to do is to sell the home and split the profits. You might also rent it out and split those profits. If you can’t agree on what to do, then you may need to file a lawsuit for partition. This asks a judge to order the sale of the home. You’ll have to pay legal fees, and this is time-consuming, so you’re going to receive less than you would have without having to resort to this step. Can You Move into the House? If there aren’t complicating factors or if the people who share ownership of the property agree to it, you might want to move into a home you inherit. If there’s an outstanding mortgage, again, you’ll have to think about whether or not you’re in a position to take on that debt and
You have to think not just about the mortgage payment, but property taxes as well and any other associated costs of keeping the home.
If you decide to sell the home you inherited, you have to cover any repairs that are needed and real estate agent fees and closing costs. Again, if you fall in a particular tax bracket, you’ll also have to pay capital gains on the difference between the fair market value of the property when you inherited it and what you sell it for. Many things factor into what you should do when you inherit a home, from whether or not the home is debt-free currently to how many people you now share it with. Do your research, so you understand all financial implications before making any decisions. THIS WEEK’S CONTRIBUTION CAME FROM:

CA residents scramble to get State Silver Bank Rolls CALIFORNIA - Once California residents got wind that California State Bank Rolls filled with Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s were being handed over, there was a mad dash to get them. That’s because they are the only Bank Rolls known to exist with the exclusive State Restricted Design. “The phones will be ringing off the hook. That’s because everyone will be trying to get them while they still can,” according to officials at the National Mint and Treasury who say they can barely keep up with all the orders. In fact, they had to impose a strict limit of 4 California State
Bank Rolls. So, if you get the chance to get your hands on these State Bank Rolls you better hurry because hundreds of California residents already have and you don’t want to miss out. You see, the U.S. Gov’t stopped minting these Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars in 1947 and there can never be any more which moves them into the collectible coin status. And here’s the best part. The rolls are unsearched so there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value. That’s why the state minimum set by National Mint and Treasury of just $39 per Silver Walking Lib-
erty, which is just $585 for the full Bank Roll is a deal too good to pass up. But you better hurry because these California State Bank Rolls themselves have been marked State Restricted by price which means the state minimum set by National Mint and Treasury is restricted to California residents and non-state residents must pay full price if any remain. That’s because they make amazing gifts for children, grandchildren and loved ones. Just imagine the look on their face when you hand them one of the State Bank Rolls — they’ll tell everyone they know what you did for them.
■ GOT ‘EM: These are the only Walking Liberty Bank Rolls known to exist with the exclusive State Restricted Design. Each Bank Roll is loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars some dating back to the early 1900’s so everyone who wants them better hurry.
Only State Restricted Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls go to California residents California residents get first dibs on Sealed Bank Rolls loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value starting at 7:30 am today CALIFORNIA - “California residents get first dibs. That’s why Hotline Operators are bracing for the flood of calls,” said Laura Lynne, U.S. Coin and Currency Director for the National Mint and Treasury. Beginning at precisely 7:30 am this morning State of California Sealed Bank Rolls loaded with rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars are actually being handed over to California residents who call the State Toll-Free Hotlines listed in today’s newspaper publication. “National Mint and Treasury recently spoke with its Chief Professional Numismatist who said ‘Very few people have ever actually saw one of these rarely seen Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars issued by the U.S. Gov’t back in the early 1900’s. But to actually find them sealed away in State Bank Rolls is like finding buried treasure. So anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Bank Rolls had better hold on to them,’” Lynne said. “But here’s the good news. The Bank Rolls themselves have been marked State Restricted by price which means the state minimum set by National Mint and Treasury is restricted to California residents only and non-state residents must pay full price if any Bank Rolls remain,” Lynne confirmed This is important to note. “These are the only California State Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls known to exist. You can’t get them at banks or credit unions or the Government since they do not produce State Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls. In fact, you can only get them bearing the exclusive State Restricted Design and rolled this way directly
from National Mint and Treasury,” Lynne explained. “Now that the State of California Sealed Bank Rolls are being offered up we won’t be surprised if thousands of California residents claim the maximum limit allowed of 4 Bank Rolls per resident while they still can,” said Lynne. “That’s because after the Bank Rolls were loaded with 15 U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade of very good or above, the dates and mint marks of the Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars found inside the Bank Rolls have never been searched. But, we do know that some of these coins date clear back to the early 1900’s and are 90% pure silver so California residents who get their hands on them will be glad they did,” Lynne went on to say. And here’s the best part. If you are a resident of the state of California you cover only the $39 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury, that’s 15 U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars worth up to 100 times their face value for just $585 which is a real steal because state residents who miss the deadline and non state residents must pay $118 per coin which totals $1,770 if any coins remain after the 2-day deadline. “U.S. Gov’t issued coins like these are 90% pure silver and a favorite of dealers, collectors and the like,” Lynne said. “We know the phones will be ringing off the hook. So the only thing readers need to do is make sure they are a resident of the state of California and call the State Toll-Free Hotlines printed in today’s publication,” Lynne said. ■
SILVER: One of the last Silver coins minted for circulation
LAST MINTED: in Philadelphia, Denver & San Francisco
STATE MINIMUM: Of just $39 per coin set by National Mint and Treasury
ENLARGED: Year varies 1916-1947
RARELY SEEN: Minted by the U.S. mint in the early 1900’s
TO CLAIM THE CALIFORNIA STATE BANK ROLLS CALL: 1-800-260-7945 EXT. WHH1009 Are these Silver Walking Liberties worth more than other half dollars:
Yes. These U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties were minted in the early 1900’s and will never be minted again. That makes them collectible. The vast majority of half dollars minted after 1970 have no silver content at all and these Walking Liberty Half Dollars were one of the last silver coins minted for circulation. So there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.
How much are State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls worth:
It’s impossible to say, but some of these U.S Gov’t issued Walking Liberty Half Dollars date back to the early 1900’s and there are 15 in each Bank Roll so you better hurry if you want to get your hands on them. Collector values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees. But we do know Walking Liberties are collectible so anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Silver Bank Rolls should hold onto them because there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.
How do I get the State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls:
California residents are authorized to claim up to the limit of 4 California State Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls by calling the State Toll Free Hotline at 1-800-260-7945 Ext. WHH1009 starting at precisely 8:30 am this morning. Everyone who does is getting the only California State Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls known to exist with the exclusive State Restricted Design. That’s a full Bank Roll containing 15 Silver Walking Liberties from the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value for just the state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury of just $39 per Silver Walking Liberty, which is just $585 for the full Bank Rolls and that’s a real steal because non state residents must pay $1,770 for each California State Walking Liberty Silver Bank Roll if any remain.
