L E T T E R S Thoughts after the Texas school shooting Editor: On May 14, I had to explain to my kids that a teenager filled with racial hate drove 200 miles to kill people in a Black community in Buffalo. One day later, six people were killed at a Taiwanese church in Laguna Woods. And then on May 24. kids and teachers were massacred in Texas. We have gotten to the point that parenting books—which normally focus on things like getting your kids to eat their vegetables, developmental milestones, potty training, sibling rivalry, and working through temper tantrums—now need to start including chapters on how to talk to your kids about mass shootings, and how to prevent them from being indoctrinated into hate. Many people fear that Russia and Vladimir Putin could someday kill us in a military attack, but at this point it seems that we Americans are handily killing ourselves. Putin doesn’t even have to pay for the guns—we buy them ourselves. He must get a lot of satisfaction watching our nation fight itself instead of uniting together to take action. We have created a slow-moving war in our own country. I am mad the GOP and NRA still don’t realize how they are playing right into Putin’s plan for global domination. Hav-

ing a nation that lives in constant fear of mass shootings and gun violence takes a toll on our entire country. On an individual level, it drains us emotionally and spiritually, and sucks away precious time and energy from our lives. On a community level, it fractures us and weakens our financial resources, public safety, education system, and so much more. The GOP is ready to turn our children’s schools into locked, sealed, and armed fortresses—all in the name of “freedom” and “safety.” But a fortress doesn’t sound like a nurturing place of learning for children. It sounds like a prison. Don’t our kids deserve freedom too? Freedom to learn without being shot with a machine gun. Freedom to know that they will live another day. Freedom to live out their promising futures. Freedom from fearing their fellow Americans. And for the heart-wrenching attack in Buffalo, people deserve the freedom to live peacefully and go to the supermarket without wearing body armor. Living like you are under constant attack in a war zone is not freedom. HC Westchester (Continued on page 15)

Foiling Fest

Young sailors receive professional lessons By Kamala Kirk n May 14 and 15, SailGP Team USA sent two of their professional sailors to Marina del Rey to sail with and provide one-on-one training to 16 local youth sailors, who learned the art of foiling on their Nikki Foiling Craft. Foiling is the act of riding a hydrofoil through a body of water and a sailing hydrofoil, hydrofoil sailboat or hydrosail is a sailboat with wing-like foils mounted under the hull, providing additional lift at planing speeds. SailGP is an international sailing league that consists of teams of many of the world’s best professional sailors for 10 different countries. Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club (SMWYC) is proud to be a partner in the SailGP Team USA’s Foiling First initiative and has already brought foiling to Marina del Rey for sailors as young as 8 years old and weighing as little as 50 pounds. In addition to the thrill of foiling and

being coached by some of the most elite sailors in the world, participants also participated in a workshop presented by Rise to Win, where they learned about how sports can help promote diversity and inclusion in communities. Foiling First is only one of many progressive initiatives taken on by SailGP teams around the world, making sailing as accessible as possible for all kids, with an intense focus on sustainability and climate change. “Our first MDR Foiling First event was a huge success despite some light wind challenges,” said program chair Steve Potter. “It was great to bring kids from different programs together to receive professional foiling instruction, make new friendships and show off their talent.”

Although we have so much more to fight for, our community wouldn’t be where we are today without these strong and courageous women. We carefully curated the three designs, wanting them to be universally appealing, and keeping our mission in mind of people leaving the salon showing their support for the LGBTQ+ community. It was important for me to keep the cost of the manicures low, as trans people specifically have high expenses as it is, but I also wanted to pay it forward to the LA LGBT Center, an organization that has personally helped me tremendously. $3 from each manicure will be donated to the Center, as I know from experience how far even the smallest of donations can go with them.” The Bellacures x Corey Rae designs include: • Magnificent Marsha (after Marsha P. Johnson): A subtle way to rock the rainbow Pride colors alternated on colored French Tips. Johnson was an

African-American trans woman who was a force behind the Stonewall Riots and surrounding activism that sparked a new phase of the LGBTQ+ movement in 1969. Johnson worked to provide food, clothing, emotional support and a sense of family for the young drag queens, trans women, gender nonconformists and other gay street kids. • Sparkling Sylvia (after Sylvia Rivera): For those that love to sparkle, this look alternates French tips with glitter-dense polish representing the transgender colors of light blue, light pink and a shimmering white-inspired nail. Rivera was a Puerto Rican-American gay liberation and transgender activist most commonly known as one of the inciters of the monumental Stonewall Riots in New York City. She was also one of the first political organizers for transgender rights in the world. Along with Johnson, she helped found STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries), a group committed to supporting transgender youth experiencing homeless-

ness in New York City. • Charming Christine (after Christine Jorgensen): For a modern springtime take on the rainbow, feature a pastel rainbow on one to two nails atop a classic nude shade. Jorgensen was an American trans woman who was the first person to become widely known in the United States for having sex affirmation surgery. Jorgensen was drafted into the U.S. Army during WWII and afterward transitioned, becoming the first trans celebrity and had a career as a successful and charming actress, singer and recording artist. The Pride manicure costs $33 and a gel upgrade is available for an additional fee. It is available at all Bellacures locations including Santa Monica and South Bay at The Point.

After studying deeply those traditions, he said he created his own system, one that draws from them as well as modern medicine and technology. He combines Eastern and Western methodologies, also drawing upon neuroscientific techniques such as hypnosis and neurolinguistic programming. The clinic in Santa Monica is designed to help clients with whatever their needs are. Garnier said his first patient had a cancerous tumor inside her liver. He’s been described as a “human lie detector for your body,” noticing things about people as soon as he sits down with them. Because of Garnier’s unique services, the wellness center reflects his practices. It is not a yoga studio or a place where you go to get a sauna and a massage. Rather, everything is personalized to each client and their body’s energy. No one comes in for a group class. Rather, they meet with Garnier and he develops a signature treatment for them using state-of-the-art amenities and technological tools. They also are not mass marketing Garnier’s treatments. Rather, they are specifically focusing on people who have the financial resources to support the work that Garnier does. He says he’s transformed the lives of stars, entertainment executives, world-class athletes and corporate leaders, guiding them to self-improvement and

inner-development journeys. He says he likes to work with highly intelligent people. His philosophy places equal emphasis on psychological wellbeing and physical healing. He works to help people resolve past emotional trauma through individualized psychospiritual-energetic exploration and reconciliation. Garnier, who first witnessed someone being healed when he was 18, brings his 30 years of practice and research into healing and transformation to West L.A. From Tragedy to Triumph Chloé Trujillo finds solace in the arts and family

Artist and musician Chloé Trujillo recently released a new music single with Mark Dalbeth and has an EP coming this summer. By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski hloé Trujillo felt defeated. Involved in a relationship that turned destructive in her early twenties, she started to believe his criticisms. “I don’t know if he was insecure or what was going on,” said Trujillo, a Westside resident who was then living in Paris. “At that age, you’re very fragile. So, I stopped art. I stopped music. I stopped everything I loved, and I lost the love for life. I was really in a depressive state.” Then Chloé’s life changed — some may say for the worse. She was attacked by a different man, a serial rapist in Paris. “It’s a long story, but he had headbutted me, and he was trying to knock me out by banging my head against the stairs,” said Chloé, stroking her long locks. “While I was being attacked, I felt this rush of adrenaline. You know how they say a mom can lift a car if their child is in trouble?”

C

The power struggle shifted, she stressed. She had the strength to fight for her life. Bloodied with her pants pulled down, Chloé chased after him but abruptly stopped when she realized what she was doing. “These two girls walked by,” she said. “One took me in her arms and the other one called the equivalent of 911 that we have in France. “The firemen came, checked me, took me to the hospital, and I did the deposition with the police. But after that, things completely shifted. That’s why, whether it’s art or music or anything creative is so healing.” That was the beginning of the revived Chloé Trujillo, who just released new music, a chapter in her healing.

Finding love, finding art Chloé was born to fashion designer parents, Claude and Chichi Barthelemy of Claude Barthelemy Paris, who worked long hours. To ease the stress,

PAGE 12 THE ARGONAUT JUNE 9, 2022

her mother’s parents moved across the street from her in Paris. “When we were kids, they would watch us after school and help with dinner,” Chloé recalled. Her paternal grandfather, Joseph Schneider, was a professional opera singer who served as a “bit of my second dad.” “I was singing all the time and I was always inspired to sing,” she said. “But as a child, I was very shy. My way of expressing myself was writing or art. It was always my passion, but I was also a very good mathematician. My dad, even though he was an artist, he insisted that I pursue math in studies.” Chloé earned a degree in math and science from University Pierre et Marie Curie but maintained her love of art and music. Music was frightening as she had to stand on a stage and sing in front of an audience. However, with the fine arts, she

could essentially hide and allow patrons to interpret her art. “I did a few exhibitions in Paris, and it was, in a way, easier because art would be displayed on the wall, but I didn’t have to be there,” Chloé said. “As a shy person, I was like, ‘OK, people can see it, but I don’t have to talk to anybody.’” In the 1990s, as a high school student at Lycée Louis le Grand in Paris, she was introduced to Robert Trujillo. It took a decade, but he asked her out. She became friends with Rocky George and Mike Clark of Suicidal Tendencies, of which Robert was the bassist. When they hung out, Robert tagged along. Chloé spent two years in New York, performing musical theater and cabaret. “I wouldn’t have dared earlier, but I just had this feeling like, ‘What else do you have to lose?’ I almost lost my life. I overcame my insecurities. It’s still a healing journey,” she said.

She then moved to Los Angeles and a mutual friend suggested she connect with Robert. In the early 2000s, they married. Chloé has found peace with Robert, who joined Metallica on Feb. 24, 2003. They have two children, Tye and Lullah. Tye — who fills in on bass for Suicidal Tendencies and Korn — is in the heavy rock trio OTTTO. “Our daughter is very discreet,” she said with a smile. “She’s an incredible writer and drummer. She’s an incredible artist, too. “She has done a few fliers for Tye and his band. With the lockdown, we were just creating our own things in our own little zones in the house. It was quite something.” She called her children inspirational. “They picked up music on their own,” she said. “We never pushed it, but I think just being surrounded by parents who are all about music and art, it just came naturally. I’m amazed

every day and they actually inspire me. Maybe I inspire them? But I know they inspire me so much.” Chloé has returned to music, too. Last year, she released her solo album “Mothers of a New Nation,” and followed that with “What Are We” EP and the “Spellbook” album. She’s releasing a song a month with Mark Dalbeth (Rav Medic), who is originally from New Zealand. Chloe and Dalbeth met in early 2021 and released the track “Lightning Strikes Twice” to much acclaim. So enamored with the music, they decided to work together under the moniker Chloe Trujillo & Rav Medic. Released on April 13, the single “The Heaviest Sound is Silence” is telling. “We chose those words because we had just lived through a major lockdown,” she said. “Even my kids had to do their school on Zoom. But it was them in their rooms. For me, I was in my studio. “When everything is shut down and you cannot see friends or you cannot see family, it was troubling. I felt ‘The Heaviest Sound is Silence’ was the perfect song. It was everything that just had to be expressed.” “A Ladder to the Sun” hit streaming services on June 1. Next up is the “Heavy Peace” EP this summer. Artwork has returned as well. She

creates her artwork and music at home. She’s represented by Tracy Park Gallery in Malibu. “I’ve been doing a few shows with the Tracy Park Gallery,” she said. “I always have art that’s there permanently and then we have special shows where we bring more pieces. I’ve also been showing here and there with Punk Rock & Paintbrushes.” One some days, Chloé sees the Paris attack as a “blessing in disguise.” After all, it paved the road to happiness. “It was terrible and traumatic, and I don’t wish it on anyone,” she said. “I was going to go down that path where I had abandoned everything I loved, everything I enjoyed doing. This is what shifted things and gave me strength. Then I started doing auditions. There are always going to be obstacles and I always feel that. But it helps to really express what’s inside of you. “Part of the healing is also feeling that it was a blessing in disguise,” she said. “Who knows where, if this attack didn’t happen, where I would be today.”

exceptional when trying to put Mami Wata on the world map and in conversations.” Mami Wata’s apparel and accessories highlight the vibrant and diverse lifestyle of African culture. The new Spring Summer ‘22 collection, “Luck is Alive,” is inspired by the idea of animism, that “everything is sentient, with an overarching theme and slogan that pays respect to the inanimate objects, plants, animals, or entities, such as the ocean, that possess a spirit or a soul,” Masekela said. “The collection features several graphic symbols inspired by the animist sensibility at the heart of African surf culture,” Masekela added. One of the symbols Masekela mentioned was the six-sided die that symbolizes good luck. Another is the heart symbol which emphasizes a “love for a physical or conceptual entity, such as love for Africa or the ocean.” Mami Wata is also conscious about giving back to the community, especially African youth organizations that help introduce kids to surfing. Masekela said the company is able to do this by manufacturing all products in Africa to create jobs. They also support different organizations like African surf therapy group Waves for Change and Surfers Not Street Children. Waves for Change teaches over 1,000 kids through programming and projects while Surfers Not Street Children provides mentorship and care through

sports and arts programming for kids in Durban, South Africa. “We hope to be a creative force for good in Africa,” Masekela said. “We do this through manufacturing all of our products in Africa to create jobs and build skills…. And strengthening African surf tourism to grow local economies.” Masekela said the Venice pop-up shop will be the first time Mami Wata will interact directly with its U.S. customers and fan base. It’ll also help the brand move forward as it plans to continue expanding and growing. “The ultimate goal is to share the untold stories of African surf culture through the

lens of real stories from African surfers and change the world’s perception of what we think about surfing,” Masekela said. “We hope the pop-up sparks interest among experienced surfers & surf culture lovers alike, and will also serve as a guide for those who are new to the brand and wish to experience Afrosurf in its most authentic form.

LETTERS (Continued from page 3)

Re: A Purposeful Rescue Editor: I read Ms. Beyer’s article in the Argonaut June 2, titled “Giving Dogs a Second Chance, a Purposeful Rescue saves pups from high-kill shelters and finds forever homes.” First, I like the article she wrote regarding the efforts of A Purposeful Rescue, I have interacted with them and other adoption partners at the county animal care centers and they do a great job. At no time during her article did she refer to animal care centers as “the pound” or high-kill shelters, thank you. When she refers to the animal care centers as “ high kill,” exactly what message is she sending? We at the care centers cringe when we hear that as we are the farthest thing from it. We are by no means at capacity and we have a very stringent policy if and when we may have to humanely euthanize an animal, the animal is irremediably suffering or a threat to the safety of the public.

By publishing “high-kill shelter,” this deters people in seeking our help with their pets. It is not a death sentence. We have many outreach programs to help people who are financially burdened, homeless, need medical attention for their pet and contacts with adoption partners. We do everything possible to keep the pet with their owner and assist in programs that spay and neuter and vaccinate. Please do not give the shock caption of “high-kill shelters” just to tug at your readers’ hearts to be interested in your article. You can go online to the city and county websites and learn more about our history and programs along with our outreach and adoption efforts. Joyce Pruett Los Angeles

Radical Growth

Art exhibition explores the roots of eco-aesthetics By Bridgette M. Redman aru García finds that combining science and art points people toward positive actions. It is the driving theme of the exhibition she is curating at 18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica. From now until July 30, “Radical Propagations/Propagaciones Radicales” will be on display at the Propeller Gallery at 18th Street Art Center’s Airport Campus. It features her work and the work of Alberto Tlatoa, Lucia Monge, Rashonda Bartney, Rebecca Youssef and Yrneh Gabon. García said she is dedicating herself this year to radical practices that involve transformation. She points out that in Latin, the word radical is tied to roots. “I asked myself, ‘How can I research practices that are able to transform things starting from the roots?’” García said. “In my case, I’ve always been interested in environmental topics and the need we have as humans to take care of our earth. That’s why I was looking for something that could really help us transform ourselves from degeneration towards regeneration.” With that goal in mind, she began focusing on plants and our relationship with plants. Plants are something that produce air for everyone and they spread and replicate— propagating plants grow from seed and develop through cuttings and roots. The exhibition became a way to explore the concept of artists as cultural producers doing the same sort of work that plants do. “Basically, these artists, and I put myself there too, we’re all trying to do this activity that sometimes looks like gardening,” García said. “Some of them are activists or working in drug mediation projects and restoration projects.” For García–a Mexican transdisciplinary artist and researcher based in Los Angeles who studies biosystems, interspecies relationships and the capacity of living organisms to act as remediators in contaminated sites–there is no separation between her research and her art, they are

18th Street Arts Center presents the exhibition “Radical Propagations/Propagaciones Radicales” curated by artist and researcher Maru Garcia in the Propeller Gallery through July 30. inexorably linked. She considers herself an art-based researcher and a research-based artist. “It’s a continuum,” García said. “The research that I do will involve some of the tools that come from science, some of the tools that come from the arts.” García’s work focuses on such things as eco-aesthetics, where relationships and community are proposed as a way of building cultures of regeneration. Her background is in the biosciences, including chemical and plant science. She said she likes researching things with different perspectives and talking to people who are experts in their fields. When García began putting the exhibition together, she looked first to the artists that 18th Street Arts Center already had then she invited three others from outside the organization. Yrneh Gabon Brown Brown is a Jamaican-born multi-disciplinary, mixed media and performance artist based in LA. He is committed to combining social activism, social commentary and artistic representation. His focus is on the African diaspora and he has traveled and researched in Tanzania, Jamaica and across America. He advocated for

PAGE 16 THE ARGONAUT JUNE 9, 2022

people with albinism and works on climate change issues. He is an 18th Street artist. “He has a lot of concepts that are really dealing with the implications of climate change towards people who have less resources, who are impacted the most because of this situation,” Garcia said. “He was talking about displacement, lack of access for water and other difficulties that people from other countries are facing.” Garcia thought it was important to show and to talk about Brown’s work. She also appreciated his performance art as a practice that is based on creating community. She referred to events where he invited people to exchange teas and taste the different flavors, something that encourages everyone to come together. She points out that while he is talking about displacement and climate-related problems, he is also bringing hope through acts of community. Brown was a good tie-in with the exhibition’s theme because he focuses on the importance of food and planting seeds. His contribution to the exhibition is a mixed media piece called, “Tomorrow is Here.” It uses metal, ceramics, wood, hibiscus, aloe vera plant, water, glass, beans, corn, soil from Mexico, Jamaica, East Africa and the U.S.

Rebecca Youssef Youssef is a mixed media artist who focuses on eco-art. Raised in Hawaii, she is now a resident of LA. She uses discarded materials as part of her commitment to sustainability. She is part of a family whose acorn project cultivates native California oak trees and they have planted more than 20,000 acorns in the Santa Monica Mountains over the past five years. She is an artist in residence at 18th Street. “I learned about her because I was interested in the work she does repurposing materials for her paintings,” García said. “She was using discarded paper from bags she was obtaining from stores. That was interesting, and then I learned about a project she was doing besides this where she was collecting seeds of oak trees, sprouting them and then planting them in different areas surrounding the Santa Monica Mountains. I was like, this is beautiful and very powerful.” It was a project that García said was very personal for Youssef as it had to do with her concern about the lack of trees in urban areas and the effect that fires had on her community. For this exhibition, she’s presenting “Our Vanishing Canopy,” a mixed-media piece

made up of bio resin, acorns and salvaged quercus agrifolia wood. It represents the process from seed to mature tree. “The installation of different stages of seeds are floating in the space as a very beautiful installation,” García said. “She also salvaged this discarded wood from the fires that were left behind. She rescued that wood and put it underneath, trying to symbolize how there are these trees that don’t exist anymore and need to be replaced.” She also has a piece with three planters where people can see the development of three oak trees. It will be possible to watch how they grow and develop during the exhibition. At the end, she will transplant them into a permanent space. The third part of her exhibit will be a video where she explores and presents the process of reforestation. It is a story that invites people to do the same if they are interested—giving them a step-by-step process for how to grow their own oak tree. Alberto Tlatoa Tlatoa is a food justice advocate, social entrepreneur, historian, artist, community organizer and co-founder of South Central Farm in South Central. In that environment, he has explored the connection

ArgonautNews.com

between food justice, environmental justice, land access and urban planning. García encountered him because she was following organizations that were promoting self-sufficiency in terms of food. Tlatoa was doing that work and had a long history with it. “The way that he approaches these themes were really radical and inspiring,” García said. “He does a lot of design with photographs and art pieces that he presents in his own social media. I liked the idea of presenting something that is very accessible.” She felt it important to invite him because she so deeply admired and respected the work his organization has been doing. She wanted to highlight the organization’s story about how they have fed people. In the exhibition, Tlatoa is showing 12 digital prints on canvas in a piece called “Land access is food justice.” Rashonda Bartney Bartney is a transdisciplinary artist, mental health advocate, poet and urban gardener from LA. She uses mixed media, installations, eco-art, storytelling, performance, video, photography and zines as forms of healing arts activism. She focuses on desert restoration and empowering marginalized communities through art and wellness. García refers to her as a master gardener and soil healer,

someone she admires because of her commitment to community, to remediating and regenerating. She worked with her on another project in which she was trying to regenerate desert land and was doing so in a way that Garcia said was very respectful and mindful of the land. For the exhibition, she built a sculpture that uses different elements she found in the desert including cacti and branches. The piece is called “Soil Incarnations” and is made up of natural and recycled materials. It is an exhibit designed for people to interact with. “These species are meant to transform through time,” García said of Bartney’s exhibit. “She placed seed balls in the bottom of the sculpture. Hopefully, we’ll be able to see some germination throughout the exhibition.” Lucia Monge Monge is a Peruvian artist whose background is in education and art and science collaborations. Her work explores the ways humans position themselves in the natural world in relation to other living beings, especially plants. The exhibit she has is a work in progress, one that she initially created in 2010 in Lima, Peru and has invited community members to join in the planting. “Her idea came after seeing her own city, Lima, didn’t have enough trees and the trees that

Monge started by putting herself in the place of the trees that were being used as trash cans and what it would be like to live in that situation. So, she imagined what she called a marching forest a walking forest. She’ll present a video showing the performance of these plantings and trees throughout the year. She’s also bringing in some of the plants, a mega-

phone and a Planton Movil book. At the end of the exhibition, the plants will become a part of the landscape, placed in an area that needs green space. Exhibition events Early in the exhibition, García gave a 30-minute tour of the exhibit—one walk-through in English and one in Spanish. Two other events are planned. On April 23, García presented “Pile 2 Patio,” a piece that explores the materiality and community-building qualities of a mulch-compost pile. It was on view for one day and included a workshop on soil health with Sustainable Works. For one day, community members were invited to sculpt with mulch and compost. She wanted to encourage people to think about the importance of soil by taking care of it. “There are so many environmental disturbances that sometimes we can just get overwhelmed,” García said. “Care for soil is something that is in the center of my art practice. With this event, we talked about the need for caring for the soil, the need for connecting with the soil and the need for considering why it is so important in our own lives. Not just because we obtain our food from soil, which is already a big thing, but because of all the implications in terms of soil as a space where we can absorb carbon and store carbon and as a space where a lot of organisms live. We’re talking about biodiversity and I wanted to do

it in a playful way.” Then every Tuesday at noon, Garcia will host a conversation and a maintenance of the exhibit. She’ll invite people to participate in the caring for the exhibit. “It is so important for me to consider this exhibition as something that is alive as an ecosystem,” Garcia said. “Something that is alive needs care. My role here is to keep the ecosystem working and functioning and giving the proper care and love of the plants.” Since care was needed, they decided it would be good to invite community members to share the activity with her—an activity as simple as watering the plants and thinking about the implications of what it means to share space with other living beings. She’ll also invite community members to a propagation table where they can learn methods for propagating plants and interchanging plants with other people and sharing with others. Garcia’s hope is that the exhibit won’t truly end on July 30, but that the things learned will transcend the space and travel into people’s own spaces and homes and that they will apply radical propagations wherever they go.”

THE ARGONAUT REAL ESTATE Q&A

Open Shelving in the Kitchen—Yay or Nay? Watch any home improvement show from the last several years, and you’ll see it: open shelving in the kitchen. But is this trend something you should embrace in your own space? Does it have staying power or will it wither away once people come to terms with its lack of function? Will you love it or regret it if you rip out all your upper cabinets? Those are the questions we’re posing today as we examine the pros and cons of open shelving. Rise in popularity If it seems like open shelving is everywhere, that’s because it is. “Open shelving is one the most popular—and also the most controversial—kitchen trends of recent years,” said Apartment Therapy. Some kitchens, in an effort to look

updated and open, have eliminated upper cabinets entirely, integrating open shelving instead. Others utilize the trend more marginally, replacing just one or two smaller sections of upper cabinets. If you are wary of converting your entire kitchen to open shelving, this is a good starter.

typical upper cabinets can sometimes make a space look too minimalist. “Open shelving can also look a bit… unfinished,” said Apartment Therapy.

Another way to get your feet wet is to simply remove the front of your cabinets instead of taking them down all together. This way, you can get the look without a major change, and you can always put the doors back on when the fad eventually passes.

Highlighting a mess

Light, airy, and open That’s what a lot of people are looking for when they make the decision to go with open shelving. And it works— sometimes too well. Getting rid of all the

Showcasing the goods Then again, it’s a great way to highlight china, nice dishes, or décor items.

Of course, that requires you to have china, nice dishes, or décor items, and to be able to display them in some kind of orderly fashion–instead of like a typical home where bowls may be mismatched, or at least stacked unevenly. But, if you’re seeking a way to get motivated to have a clean and orderly kitchen, this could help. “If you’re looking for a built-in, training-wheel kitchen setup to help ensure that you

stay organized, then open shelving might be a good idea,” said HGTV. “The trick is: you have to commit to keeping things neat so you can avoid having your kitchen look like a hot-mess yard sale.” It’s dusty in here “While we love looking at neatly arranged dishware on an open shelf, the reality can be a bit frustrating. Namely, due to all the dust and grease that end up on the carefully-arranged plates, bowls, mugs and glassware,” said House Beautiful. In fact, the site is so adamant about its stance on open shelving that the trend made it list of “9 Trendy Home Features That Are Secretly a Pain.”
