Mar Vista Community Council Editor: As I view the very disturbing footage of the Jan. 6 hearings, I cannot help but make comparisons to the decline, no, near destruction of fair and orderly politics in Mar Vista. Unfortunately, leadership of our Community Council chooses to rule with an iron fist without regard to due process, community input or traditions of fair and responsive governance. The most recent troubling event is the cancelling of executive board elections and a delay until a “special election” to a date of the chair’s choosing. This is only
the latest of a long series of undemocratic actions by a truly unilateral leader. Watch this board in action (you will not see the chair) and imagine what the value of a community-centered and responsive Mar Vista Community Council would be. Robin Doyno Los Angeles

Meet the Chef
Learn more about The Tasting Kitchen’s Executive Chef Travis Passerotti By Kamala Kirk ocated on Abbot Kinney in Venice, The Tasting Kitchen is a contemporary Italian restaurant designed around a central olive tree in the entrance with a New American farm to table heritage. Their menu changes regularly based on fresh seasonal produce and offers an optional tasting format as a guided dining experience. Dishes include handmade pastas, in-house cured meats and produce from farmers markets on the Westside, and the neo-classical cuisine is amplified by a purposely-curated wine portfolio and a celebrated cocktail program. his father, who was also a chef and restaurateur. He was also influenced by his mother’s love of culinary heritage and hospitality. Passerotti honed his culinary skills by studying under classically trained European chefs including Chef Bollag (Bruno’s Chef Kitchen) and Chef Landsberg (Inn at The Seventh Ray, King Estate Winery). He worked with Chef Landsberg at King Estate Winery, directing the charcuterie program before moving to Los Angeles in 2013. Passerotti draws inspiration from Nouvelle French and Contemporary American cuisines, the American local food movement and farmhouse ideology, and each dish he creates reflects the provenance of its ingredients while still emphasizing light, bright Mediterranean European flavor profiles that complement the flavors of Southern California.

We chatted with Passerotti, who shared what sparked his initial interest in the culinary arts, the signature dish he’s best known for, the kitchen tool he can’t live without and more. What got you interested in cooking? It all started when I was a freshman in high school and over the summer I decided that I should receive lunch money during the off-school months as well, to which my father replied, “Why don’t you get a job?” At the time he was managing a well-known restaurant in Eugene, Oregon that had just opened up a new concept, and by the end of the week, he helped me get my food handler’s certificate and a job washing dishes. By that time I had been running around in restaurants for a while and was crazy excited to be a part of the kitchen.

Most important thing you learned in culinary school? When I was looking at culinary schools I was already working as a line cook, and I knew there was merit in attending a culinary program, but at the time I was more interested in actually cooking. I worked for several Europeantrained chefs and practiced the apprentice/journeyman ap-
proach to learning the culinary arts. I have always learned more effectively from watching and doing than in a classroom. What’s the first dish you learned to make really well? I’m going to have to go broad strokes for this one; not a dish per se but a singular food item: the egg. I worked with an old school line cook, like the ones you can read about in the old Bourdain books. His name was Rivers and he could be a mean sob sometimes, but that man taught me how to cook eggs. Signature dish you’re known for? That’s always a tough one; I love cooking with wild mushrooms. I can personally guarantee that when we cook with wild mushrooms here that they are properly respected. I do a Basque-inspired Funghi Misti with Pedro Ximenez sherry every winter that I deeply love; it tends to hit the menu right when Chanterelles are booming. Favorite ingredient to cook with and why?
Whichever vegetable or fruit is absolutely the freshest at the moment. We live in such an amazing place for fresh food, it has changed the way I cook irreversibly. That being said, I can’t wait to get my hands on some corn!

How did you become a chef? Lots of hard work, missed family and social events, and a strong commitment to learning. Once I had truly committed to cooking in my early twenties, I knew being a chef was my end game. Becoming a chef is a hard moment to nail down; there is so much that goes into it. To me, one of the deciding characteristics is how much you are able to teach the people cooking for you. Before I became an executive chef, there were days when I would spend my time showing people how to execute recipes or answer questions about products, and in those moments were the first times I felt like I had earned the title of chef.
Kitchen tool you can’t live without? Other than a nice knife? A nice spoon goes a long way. I love building relationships with my tools and I can say that the bond between a chef and their spoons is a hard one to break. I will tear the kitchen apart looking for one of my spoons when it goes missing. Who do you look up to in the culinary world? Who don’t I look up to is the real question. I love the grandmas and grandpas all over the world keeping forgotten cuisines alive; the fishermen, farmers, ranchers and all of the people doing the hard work to grow and raise the fine ingredients we get to cook with; every young cook who is out there breaking boundaries and changing the rules; and most

Food as Medicine
GEM’s plant-based nutritional supplements are reinventing the vitamin industry By Michele Robinson any people consume pills, powders, liquids and gummies to supplement their daily nutritional needs. Sara Cullen, founder and CEO of GEM, found herself questioning why and came up with a surprising alternative: food as medicine. “At GEM we’re overhauling the antiquated supplement aisle and building a new category of real-food nutrition,” Cullen said. GEM is a multivitamin alternative that is different from other daily vitamins found on the market shelves because it is made from real food. Each portion is packaged as a tiny bar called a “bite.” Bites contain a comprehensive blend of over 15 whole foods, botanicals, probiotics, vitamins and minerals. “GEM is designed with real food that your body knows and loves, along with key vitamins and minerals that work together

problems, restless nights and other issues. After taking an allergy and blood test, she found out that she was micronutrient-deficient and needed to take supplements. When she went to the shelves to find what
she needed, she was disappointed with what she found. So she decided to create her own unique brand to reinvent vitamins. “Through my own health journey I became obsessed with

sustainable plant systems and how we can not only rethink the way we nourish human health, but also our planet’s,” Cullen said. Growing up on a farm in Oregon, Cullen earned a bachelor of science in international agriculture and development studies from Cornell University. She has worked with entrepreneurs and farmers in sustainable food networks all over the world, from Morocco and Kenya to India and Vietnam. As a two-time entrepreneur in the food and beverage world and former Venture For America Fellow, Cullen is passionate about redesigning a healthier future of nourishment. “I wanted to rethink how we supplement food for our minds, bodies and our planet under the simple philosophy that food is medicine,” she said. 15 employees, many who work virtually and in different time zones. The is dedicated to ensuring the highest quality of standards because all of their products are manufactured in the United States. GEM’s scientific advisory board includes an impressive array of experts in their respective fields including a registered dietitian, biomolecular nutritionist, clinical herbalist and plant biologist to name a few. “Food medicine is central to herbalism, so I love food-first remedies, which GEM is,” said Rachelle Robinett, GEM’s scientific advisor and resident herbalist. “It’s also a great way for those averse to capsules to consume nutrients.” GEM’s plant-based vitamin bites fill in those gaps. With so many people following Keto, Vegan, or other diets, we are bound to miss some key nutrition. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “92% of Americans are micronutrient-deficient.” “GEM provides a way to address these gaps in a realfood form,” said Erin Skinner, the registered dietitian on the
Scientific Advisory Board. “GEM provides a complementary combination of real-food nutrients in a method that is easy, delicious, and safe.” GEM’s plant-based approach also differs from traditional vitamins because key vitamins and minerals are holistically sourced from nutrient-dense whole food ingredients like herbs, algae and adaptogens. For example, K2 in GEM is derived from chickpeas, vitamin D from mushrooms, and iron from curry leaves. Each bite also contains a variety of super-nutrient ingredients like pumpkin seeds, spirulina, and probiotics. Additionally, GEM doesn’t solely use isolated vitamins that are made in a lab with artificial or synthetic coloring, binders or fillers (like gummy vitamins). GEM is made from the ground up. “We are a nutritional label with real food ingredients and so much more than a traditional vitamin,” Cullen said. “It’s a delightful bite you eat, not take.” GEM is available in four daily essential flavors including citrus
ginger, which is great for flu season because it has added zinc, probiotics and turmeric to help with immunity. Other varieties include cacao, lemon and peppermint. To help with sleep issues, Sleep Essentials has valerian root (a natural herb alternative to melatonin) along with magnesium, l-theanine and gaba that combine to help the body fall asleep, stay asleep, and wake up without grogginess. Last April, GEM added their newest bite, Calm, to the lineup. Calm is specially formulated to help with stress and mood. It is recommended to take one GEM daily essential bite every day in the morning and a Sleep Essentials bite at night. They are meant to work together to address health, mind and body issues. There is no need to take GEM with food. “We are reinventing vitamins—one delicious bite at a time,” Cullen said.”

Street Vet
Dr. Kwane Stewart provides free care for homeless pets By Kamala Kirk r. Kwane Stewart has loved animals since he was a child. In Albuquerque, he grew up around dogs, cats, chickens, cattle and horses. “My mother was a huge animal person and for a while she had a ranch, so we always had animals around the house and they were just part of my life,” Stewart said. “At a young age, I developed this connection with animals. There’s nothing more organic than that bond with another living creature.” Stewart recalled deciding to become a veterinarian when he was 7. “My mom took me to see ‘The Black Stallion,’ and I was glued to the screen the entire time,” Stewart said. “When we walked out, I looked up at her and said that when I grew up, I wanted to be an animal doctor.” After graduating from the renowned Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Stewart moved to San Diego, where he began his career as a veterinarian. After a decade, he relocated to Modesto and worked at the municipal animal shelter in Stanislaus County, which was eye-opening for him. “It was during the recession, and I was working in a really depressed part of California,” Stewart said. “Modesto was ground zero for homelessness. I took the job because I wanted the challenge and they needed a vet. I had never done shelter work before, and it was a wakeup call.” Pets were regularly surrendered to the shelter, and Stewart became burnt out in his role, hating the fact that he had to euthanize as many as 60 healthy animals per day. But during his time at the shelter, Stewart also brought a lot of positive change, which included building a brand-new, state-of-the-art shelter. “My vision was that a shelter shouldn’t be a pound. I see it as part of the community like a library, park or place where you can go and get your next family member,” Stewart said. “I started working with city council members and the community. I educated on the importance of spaying and neutering and dramatically improved our adoption rate. I took our eutha-

The dog appeared to have a bad skin condition, so he introduced himself and offered to help. That ended up being a life-changing moment for Stewart, the dog and its owner. “He looked so surprised and said that he didn’t know what to do, his dog was suffering, and it was the most important thing in his life,” Stewart said. “It was a simple flea condition, but when a dog has that for a long time, it completely tears the skin apart. I promised him that I would return the next day with my medical kit. The following day I came back and treated the dog in a few minutes, then went to work. I saw them a week and a half later and the dog was completely transformed with healthy skin and wagging its tail. The owner was crying and thanked me for helping. But I was also saved in that moment because it inspired me to get back to saving animals and doing it on my terms. From that day forward, I walked the streets to find others like him to help.” After five years at the shelter, in 2012 Stewart relocated to Los Angeles when he became the chief veterinary officer for American Humane and national director of the No Animals Harmed program, which
PAGE 8 THE ARGONAUT JUNE 23, 2022
oversees the treatment of animals on film sets. “They were looking for a veterinarian for the first time in 75 years to run the program after there had been some highly publicized incidents and deaths that occurred on film sets,” Stewart said. “They held a nationwide search, and I beat out 150 qualified vets across the country. There could not have been a more dramatic contrast between what I was doing one day versus the next. I went from doing spays and neuters and euthanizing animals to being on set with Tommy Lee Jones and seeing how movies are made.” For the next seven years, Stewart continued his work as a street vet on weekends and evenings, providing free medical care to homeless people and their pets on Skid Row. But one day while talking about his secret mission on set, Stewart caught the attention of a producer. “People always asked me why I didn’t share what I was doing with anyone, but I wasn’t looking for attention,” Stewart said. “I just wanted to do it to help others. There’s a lot of down time on sets, so I was chatting with a producer and sharing stories of the people I met on Skid Row. He found it riveting, and next thing I knew, I had the green light for my own reality TV show.”
The first episode of “The Street Vet” debuted in July 2019 and aired in 28 countries around the world. The series followed Stewart as he helped homeless people and their pets, highlighting some of the heartwarming stories and turning his private mission into a public one. “I’m happy that my work is inspiring to a lot of people,” Stewart said. “I’ve had people from all around the world reach out to me asking how they can help and replicate what I’m doing. For the first time recently, I had two vets shadow me while I worked. In an ideal world, I would like to find more people like me who can start doing this work in different places.” Stewart admitted that his work as a street vet has also changed his views of homeless people. “Regrettably I used to judge them, but after getting to know many of them on a personal level and learn their stories, I’ve completely walked that back,” Stewart said. “Many of them are disabled, mentally ill, or can’t get back on track because of substance abuse or economic issues. A lot of these people were normal just like you and me. They lost their job, their home, then slept in their car while thinking their situation was temporary. Then they lost their car, are on the street corner and it’s been over a year. For a lot of these people, their dog is their reason and
purpose. These dogs provide protection, companionship, and keep them grounded.” According to Stewart, approximately 20% of the homeless population (1 out of every 5 unhoused people) owns a pet. The 2020 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count by the Los Angeles Homeless Service Authority states that the homeless population of Skid Row is estimated at almost 5,000 individuals within 0.4 square miles (50 square blocks) of DTLA. “I’ve come across hundreds of animals on Skid Row,” Stewart said. “A lot of the unhoused are hassled, so naturally when a stranger goes up to them, they’re cautious, but as soon as I announce who I am and my intentions, they light up. I kneel down and give immediate attention to the animal. Within minutes, the person’s comfort grows, this door opens and we start to connect. They see I’m there for a good reason and I’m helping the thing that is most important to them in their world. They’ll start sharing personal stories with me, and I give them the same respect that I would to a paying client at a clinic. When I walk away, there’s often an exchange of hugs and tears, and I’ve made a new friend.” While Stewart mostly treats dogs and cats, some of the other unusual pets he’s treated include rats and a Python. The most common medical issues he sees and treats among homeless pets are skin and ear conditions. In his medical kit he carries an arsenal of antibiotics, antiinflammatories and vaccines. When Stewart encounters a more serious issue that he isn’t equipped to handle on the street, he will refer the person to a nearby veterinary hospital so they can get their pet the treatment that it needs. “Some of these dogs may need surgery for something like a tumor removal,” Stewart said. “I’ll call a colleague and ask if they can do it pro bono or reduce the cost. A lot of vets are really good about it. For the better part of eight years, I did this out of pocket until I started a GoFundMe two years ago.” Stewart has cared for more than 1,000 pets through volunteer work prior to 2020, when he
ArgonautNews.com founded his nonprofit, Project Street Vet. Now a resident of San Diego, Stewart still drives up regularly to continue his work on Skid Row. He also provides medical care to homeless pets around San Diego, San Francisco, Sacramento, Fresno, Santa Monica and Venice Beach. In addition to developing United Airlines’ Pet Safe Program after traveling in a pet crate through its system to experience what pets had to endure, Stewart also consults for Netflix, where he reads scripts and creates risk assessments along with necessary precautions for each project to ensure animal safety and comfort. Some of the films Stewart has consulted on include “The Power of the Dog” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Stewart’s latest venture is as chief medical officer and head veterinarian for Papaya Pet Care, a series of full-service veterinary clinics for cats and dogs that provide a fear-free pet experience alongside general wellness care, specialized dental care and vaccinations. They recently opened their first
clinic in Carmel Valley, San Diego, and plan to roll out more than 50 locations in California including Culver City. They offer transparent pricing, a membership model for all budgets, and are tech-enabled, including telehealth visits. “We make the office visit experience for the pet and pet parent as comfortable and stress free as possible,” Stewart said. “All of the clinics are beautifully designed with state-of-theart equipment. We’re also incorporating ways to help people experiencing financial hardship to make sure their pet can get the care they need. We’re looking for more good veterinarians to join us who want to make a difference and help save animals.” Looking back on his 25 years as a vet, Stewart has made a difference in the lives of many people and animals. While it hasn’t always been easy, it continues to provide him with a sense of fulfillment and purpose, and he hopes that others will do the same in their own way. “I feel like we’re at a time in society where there is a shortage of tolerance and kindness,”
Dr. Kwane Stewart is also chief medical officer and head veterinarian of Papaya Pet Care, a series of full-service veterinary clinics for cats and dogs that provides a fear-free pet experience. Stewart said. “Little things that used to be built into our society like holding the door for someone seem to be on their way out, and it’s sad. I think intolerance holds people back from doing kind gestures, and I hope to demonstrate through my work that we need to start looking out for each other.
We’re all human beings. I’m a vet, and although a lot of my attention goes to the animals, I try to help people whenever I can. One guy on the street was missing a skateboard wheel, so I showed up the next day with a brand-new skateboard for him. It’s amazing what those small gestures will do for someone.”

Gotham Chopra’s production company is changing the media landscape

Religion of Sports
By Abigail LaCombe otham Chopra believes that sports can have the same impact as religion. To support his point, he, Tom Brady and Michael Strahan started Religion of Sports, a Santa Monica-based media content company, in 2017. They initially raised $10 million to develop the content across many platforms, and recently announced $50 million in Series B Funding. “It’s not about religion and sports,” said Chopra, who is the son of author and alternative medicine advocate Deepak Chopra. “It’s not about exploring evangelical athletes. It’s about how sports is community. You know, you go on pilgrimages, you believe in mythologies, you become part of something bigger than yourself. That was always the idea.” Religion of Sports tells stories that make believers, held together by a common thread of why sports matter. Their programming has drawn more than 250 million views/listens of its content, which covers athletes like Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Serena Williams, Brady, Simone Biles and Steph Curry. In 2021, the company debuted several docuseries including “Man in the Arena” on ESPN+, “Passion Play” on Showtime, and “Simone vs. Herself” on Facebook Watch. They recently premiered the second season of their hit series, “Greatness Code,” on AppleTV+. Last week, they released “The Sessions: Draymond Green” on Prime Video, which was produced by Religion of Sports and directed by Chopra. Chopra said the company puts a new spin on the well-documented athletes’ stories. “Across multiple Olympic arenas, Grand Slam finals, Tom Brady’s 10 Super Bowls, Steph Curry’s five NBA Championships or NBA finals, etc.,” he said. “That type of sustained success comes from work. No one at that level is just gifted. It’s about who is putting in the work.” The trio has put in their own work, as Religion of Sports proves it isn’t just for sports fans. They also plan to expand beyond sports into areas like business, music and entertainment. “There are some upcoming projects that I’d say are tangential,” Chopra said. “Sports is a language of performance. You can see that with people who are
G

the best at what they do, be it in fashion or music or business or whatever, they actually use the language of sports to articulate their own stories. Ultimately, I am a creator. If someone inspires me that is outside the business plan, too bad for the business plan. I’m going to just go do it. That is kind of where we are heading.” Chopra, a diehard Boston sports fan, is a loving father and husband who lives in Santa Monica with his wife and son. He grew up in Boston with his immigrant parents. Raised in a religious household, Gotham was surrounded by a culture obsessed with sports. He took the language of sports to identify himself and become American. Chopra likens sporting events to a church service. They bring people together. Even if they don’t have anything in common, for those few hours, they become part of something the collective believes in. “Sports are visceral, sports are a religion,” he said. “It’s the absence of time, being the best version of yourself, the human potential. We talk about these
things in religious traditions, but we experience them in sports.” Strahan and Brady have firsthand experience, and Chopra is the authority when it comes to finding the greatness in the greatest. Chopra said the three complement each other. “We’re building a great business, and this is a shared passion,” he said. “We don’t aspire to be the Tom Brady or Michael Strahan production company. It’s much bigger than that and they’ve been huge supporters of that vision.” Religion of Sports has won five Sports Emmys with their latest one being for “Man in the Arena,” which is the first-ever win for ESPN+. Chopra called it a “great affirmation.” “Building this company, it’s important to celebrate successes because so many people work so hard,” he said. “But I also think we’re kind of like a sports team, and it’s always about what’s next. Awards come and go, and the satisfaction comes from the impact of the work.” Religion of Sports religionofsports.com

All-blind theater company to perform in musical PHOTO COURTESY OF THEATRE BY THE BLIND
By Bridgette M. Redman heatre by the Blind, the nation’s only blind theater company, could not have been a more perfect fit for the French musical written by Sebastien Lancrenon and Jean-Baptiste Saudray. It’s why the show’s producer contacted their artistic director, Greg Shane, and asked if he would produce a version with all-blind actors. “The Braille Legacy” tells the story of Louis Braille, the inventor of the system now used internationally by blind people to read. It premiered at Charing Cross Theatre in London, but there were no blind actors in the

cast—the characters of the blind children wore blindfolds. The show at ArtsUP! LA will be different, running June 24 and 25 at The Miracle Theatre in Inglewood. First, everyone in the cast will be blind, even those who are playing sighted characters, something Shane, who is also blind, said he does with all his shows at the Culver City theater company. “I always have blind actors play sighted characters,” Shane said. “I think it is important for them to memorize the stage, to move independently through space. I think the fact that they’re playing sighted characters allows for that.”

Even the musicians in the pit orchestra have diverse abilities from blindness to autism. Rex & Friends is led by keyboardist Rex Lewis-Clack, a blind musician who was born with brain damage. When he was 15, he played at then-Vice President Joe Biden’s inauguration and was featured in a “60 Minutes” segment. “He can literally hear a song one time and play it perfectly,” Shane said. It is this sort of commitment to include artists of all abilities that had Martine Melloul, the executive producer of the show, reach out to Shane. “She asked me if I would take a look at directing a production using blind actors since this is a story of Louis Braille and it is a great fit,” Shane said. He listened to the show just once and immediately said they would do it. A week after the show went into production, the pandemic hit and everything was put on hold. Fundraising became a challenge and there was a concern they weren’t going to be able to come up with the money needed to do the show. Eventually, a Kickstarter program, “Save the Braille Legacy,” raised the rest of the money needed. Even then, the first scheduled production was again delayed because of the Omicron variant of COVID and rising case numbers. Now though, 14 actors and 10 musicians have gathered and are ready to stage the show. Coco Head, an actor and professional skateboarder, is playing the part of Louis Braille. It’s a part that he said he would travel anywhere to audition for. “The story is Louis Braille and his invention and how it changed the world and the fight against the people who were trying to oppress the blind community,” Shane said. “What is so interesting about the musical is that it really gives an insight into the world through Louis’ eyes and it also gives insight into the history of what was happening at the time. It is an educational piece with a theatrical, dramatic element to it.” Shane shared that many people don’t know that Braille was a young man when he invented the system. He started when he was a pre-teen and had it mostly complete by the time he was 15. “He was playing around with dice and noticed the indentations
ArgonautNews.com of the dice,” Shane said. “From feeling those dots, he created a numerical system of braille that has never changed since its creation.” He wants people to understand the origin of braille because it has had such an effect on the blind community and for those who are vision impaired. “I think understanding history and understanding other people is important,” Shane said. “I hope this show really raises awareness to the fact that when I sing, I see, to the idea that I see so much more than people think I can see. That is the message of the show.” This is the first time the Theatre by the Blind has done a show with this much choreography. Shane has designed a textured floor system that helps blind actors move around the stage. He puts different textured pads on the stage which lets the actors feel with their feet and move gracefully on the stage. Shane and a volunteer choreographer have found lots of ways to communicate with the actors what they need to do as they dance. “I’m very proud of how they are learning the movements to
get around the stage and find each other in different positions,” Shane said. “The choreography is complicated. It’s not simple stuff that we’re coming up with.” The show begins with a partner dance, and the two performers were already dancers, so they were able to pick things up quickly. Others, Shane said, have picked up quickly on directions. “The actors have a good sense of space,” Shane said. “It is easy to communicate what needs to be done. It’s really about setting up the spatial elements. It is more about describing movement to the actors—put your hands in the air like reaching for the stars and then move your hands as if you are giving a big hug.” Shane said he does a lot of work with tableaus and making sure his actors understand the imagery of the piece. “I really believe that in a good performance you should be able to stop the performance at any moment and look on stage and it should look like a painting,” Shane said. “The play should be a moving painting. Imagery is really important, especially in this production.” One of the two nights will offer

While the delays have been frustrating at times, Shane said he has great appreciation for the commitment he’s had from his actors who have stayed with the show for the entire two and a half years. “It is pretty hard to stay committed that long and they have,” Shane said. “It shows the integrity and level of professionalism of everyone.” As a director, the delays have given him a lot more time to digest the script and envision the show in more detail. “I’m one of those directors who

think in pictures, not words,” Shane said. “I play the movie out in my head of what the musical looks like.” He’s also been able to gather more of a team to work on it from the volunteer choreographer to an assistant director. While he has high praise for how well his actors can move through the space, he said it is also important that audiences know they are watching people who are blind and appreciating what they can do and what might be challenging for them. “I think it is important that they notice during a transition that it
is harder to get off stage,” Shane said. “Seeing them in real time and sometimes struggle to find a door, that is an important element. It is just as important that they see that and then on the flip side, see how outstanding they are on stage and the way they do move.”

Transforming Pain
Film captures woman’s relentless journey to success and hope By Bridgette M. Redman t’s not often you hear someone say that real estate saved their life, but in the case of Kathleen Black, it’s not only true, but it has helped her transform the lives of thousands of others. The story of her beginnings has been made into a documentary film that headlined the Marina del Rey Film Festival. “The Relentless One” is the story of a woman who grew up in a home where she witnessed and experienced physical and emotional abuse. She became homeless at 15 and was involuntarily admitted to a psychiatric ward, which she said was a changing point in her life. Her history of homelessness is one reason she wants to see others in homes where they can be safe. She describes the work she does as sacred and the profession as one of healing. Black leads a coaching and consulting firm and is one of North America’s leading real estate team coaches and trainers. “I have a need to help make sure that people have security in their home and give voice to people in difficult situations,” Black said. “In real estate, you’ll have people who have been through domestic abuse, the passing of a loved one, divorce or somebody’s terminal illness. You’re in situations where people feel vulnerable.” It was why she wanted to do more than sell real estate. She wanted to help shift agents to a mindset where they support their communities and change their approaches to working with clientele. “It doesn’t just shift their business,” Black said. “It shifts their whole lives and it shifts the people’s lives that they’re interacting with.” M. Douglas Silverstein, an Emmy-award winning director who has collaborated with such superstars as Beyonce, Madonna and Taylor Swift, learned about the story from another woman he had worked with. He read the book Black had just written about her life and immediately knew he wanted to tell her story if she was willing.

Kathleen Black, with director M. Douglas Silverstein, is the subject of “The Relentless One,” an award-winning documentary that headlined at the Marina del Rey Film Festival. “I was able to talk about some very difficult subjects that happened in her life—witnessing parental domestic abuse, being homeless and just the tenacity to keep moving forward no matter what the obstacles are,” Silverstein said. “That’s why the film is aptly named for her. The relentless one. It makes a lot of sense when you get to know her and when you see this film.” Courage was immediately necessary as Black had no say in how the story would be told. After her initial meetings with Silverstein, she had to wait until the film was done to learn what was in it. Silverstein interviewed everyone he could find who knew Black and would be willing to talk about her life. He spoke with her mother, her sister, friends and
PAGE 14 THE ARGONAUT JUNE 23, 2022
family. Everyone had their own perspectives. “A lot of being a documentarian is hunting down leads,” Silverstein said. “I’m not suggesting in any way that she hid anything in her story, but I wanted it to be my investigation of her story. I’m going to seek the independent and clearest truth that I can find.” Black described seeing the film as emotional and terrifying. She attended it with her children and family. However, she was thrilled with the result and even more so with the people who came up to her to tell her that they could relate to what she went through and that it had made them stronger. “That was the most important thing for me,” Black said. “If you can take something that’s negative and make it 20 times
more positive—that’s the alchemy of life, right? The film allowed me to walk with people and for them to feel seen and understood instead of damaged or broken or wrong.” Silverstein set out to tell a story that would challenge himself visually and aesthetically. It’s why there are beautiful shots of nature and the Toronto skyline contrasted with what happened inside Black’s home. “There’s really intimate, dirty, gritty recreations of the terrible pain and the fight between her father and mother,” Silverstein said. “That is more of a narrative technique because the truth is, no one turns on the video camera when dad is physically attacking mom.” He cast actors to recreate the scene.
“It’s upsetting to look at even though it’s very brief,” Silverstein said. “It doesn’t shy away from the intensity of her experience. In the effort to always tell the truth in the film, even the dialog that was said is based on the remembrance of some of the characters involved in that scene.” He pointed out that everything reported in the film is based in truth and the decision to be cinematic was to challenge the audience to look at how difficult it was. Black said she felt that the film captured who she was, but that it also shows she is constantly changing. “It captured my progression from a young girl to where I was a year ago when we stopped filming,” Black said. “It captured the essence of how I approach things and who I am and the fact that I am continuously and always growing.” While there are gritty and intense parts of the film, Silverstein ultimately characterizes it as a triumph over tragedy story. “This is an inspiring story about a person who refused to have an average life or to be broken by life,” Silverstein said. “I don’t know anybody who does more work on themselves or has more adventures to get to know herself better or takes more classes. That’s why she’s the relentless one. She won’t give up. I want people to not see this as a dark story.” Black, who as a coach spends her life working with people for change, knows that it is easy to feel hopeless. It’s why she wants the film to be both inspirational and aspirational. “There are so many different categories this world tried to put on me and if I had taken any of them, I wouldn’t have done anything I have now,” Black said. “I want people to really have hope that they can build something better, that the things that have happened to us don’t have to hold us back. They can propel us forward. And when we do that healing work, we change our families, we change the trauma moving forward and it changes the world.”

Music Extravaganza
Jacaranda concert series concludes 18th season By Kamala Kirk he critically-acclaimed Jacaranda Music concert series based in Santa Monica concluded its 18th season of ingenious musical experiences with season finale programs at First Presbyterian Church of Santa Monica. The Saturday evening concert featured the music of Luigi Dallapiccola, Ferrucio Busoni, Luciano Berio, and Igor Stravinsky. The Sunday afternoon program “Festa by the Sea” included musical fireworks by Franz Liszt, Nicolo Paganini, and Berio. Distinguished artists featured on both programs included Kristen Toedtman (mezzo-soprano); Steven Vanhauwasert (piano); Movses Pogossian (violin); Alison Bjorkedal (harp); and the Jacaranda Chamber Ensemble conducted by Mark Alan Hilt. Jacaranda produces classical music adventures designed to awaken curiosity, passion and discover with a spirit of inclusion. By engaging a wide range of audiences, these curated concerts based primarily in Santa Monica since 2003, advance the repertoire of soloists and ensembles with live music, recordings, music videos and education. Founded by arts impresario Patrick Scott and conductor/organist Hilt, Jacaranda produces a concert series that features exciting current and rising stars in the world of classical music performance. “We are elated with the response to our
T
season finale weekend programs,” said artistic director Patrick Scott. “The daughter of Luciano Berio, who attended both concerts and the afterparty, was thrilled at how beautifully her father’s music was nestled with Italian music dating back to Giuseppe Tartini. Steven Vanhauwaert’s monster piano technique was on full display in seven works ranging from solo to a 10-member ensemble by Ferruccio Busoni. “The formidable virtuosity of violinist Movses Pogossian heated up the room to standing ovations. Threaded throughout the weekend’s music, wisps of Italian folk songs culminated with ‘Folk Songs,’ Berio’s most popular work celebrating traditional music from eight countries, including Armenia. ‘Folk Songs’ was dazzlingly brought to life by mezzo soprano Kristen Toedman, and the always top-notch Jacaranda Chamber Ensemble conducted by Mark Alan Hilt. While still basking in this season’s success, we are already looking ahead to what new musical adventures we have in store for audiences in our upcoming 19th season.” For more information about the upcoming 2022-23 season, Camaraderie, visit Jacaranda’s website.

THE ARGONAUT REAL ESTATE Q&A
Should You Move Out During a Remodel? Maybe you’ve been planning a remodel for quite some time, and you’re finally getting started. You might be doing a large-scale remodel to make your home more functional for your family, or perhaps the plan is to get it ready to sell. Regardless of why you’re remodeling, there’s a big question that will arise: should you stay, or should you go? Meaning, should you move out while the work is being done? The following are some of the things to think about as you decide. Is Moving Out a Realistic Option? If you have family or friends that are willing to take you in for a period of time, this may not be a concern, but otherwise, can you realistically afford to move out? If you’re paying several months of rent, for example, think about how much this will add to your total renovation costs. It could be thousands or tens of thousands. That’s even if you can find a short-term rental for the window of time you’ll need. Even if you technically have the money to move out and into temporary housing, could that money be put to better use in the remodel itself?
Do You Work From Home? A lot of people work from home for the foreseeable future because of coronavirus. If you’re one of them, and perhaps your spouse is as well, you may need at a minimum a reliable place to work while renovations are going on. Working in a construction zone can be even tougher than trying to live your day-to-day life in one. Maybe staying throughout your renovation would cause your productivity to take such a hit that you just can’t manage it, in which case you might move out. Staying Could Extend the Timeline If you stay during a remodel, the contractor is going to have to work around you. They’re not going to be able to work hours that are as flexible such as in the evenings. They’re going to be building their schedule around yours, which might mean that it takes longer to finish things. Plus, you’re taking up space, and your personal items are as well. That can slow down the process.
PAGE 18 AT HOME – THE ARGONAUT’S REAL ESTATE SECTION JUNE 23, 2022
What Part of Your Home Are You Renovating? Whether or not you move out can depend on your budget and timeline and what the project is. If you’re renovating something like a kitchen or bathroom, it can make more sense to move out. Otherwise, you may have to set up a temporary area of your home for essential functions like preparing snacks and meals. Of course, if you’re doing a gut renovation you probably don’t have any choice. You’ll have to move out. Otherwise, in addition to the obvious downsides, you might also be exposed to toxic chemicals and fumes. If you’re renovating something like a basement or a living area, you might not have to move. It could be that you can stay out of that area easily enough during the renovation. You just need to think about your needs and lifestyle. Some homes have layouts that are more conducive to staying put during a renovation too. For example, maybe you have a multi-level house so you can confine most of your activities to one level or the other during renovations. If you do stay in your home, but you restrict
yourself to an area where work isn’t being done, you can rent a storage pod so you can completely empty the work area. This will keep your furniture and other items protected, and it will also make it easier for the people who are working. Safety Safety is another issue that is likely to sway you in one direction or the other. If you don’t have kids or pets, or your kids are older, this might not be a concern. If you do have kids or pets, staying in your home during renovations can be a safety concern. The contractor and subcontractors should make an effort to keep their work areas sectioned off, but worksites are inherently risky. If you’re trying to decide whether or not to move out during a remodel, there’s not one right answer that works for everyone. It depends a lot on how much you can tolerate in terms of inconvenience, your family and lifestyle, and the scope of the work being done. THIS WEEK’S CONTRIBUTION CAME FROM:

Unsearched U.S. Coin Bags full of Morgan Silver Dollars go to CA residents State zip codes used to determine who gets valuable Morgan Silver Dollars issued by the U.S. Gov’t over 100 years ago and sealed away in three pound U.S. Coin Bags that have never been searched Who gets the Morgan Silver Dollars: Only CA residents who find their zip code listed on the Distribution List below are getting the Gov’t issued coins. If you find your zip code listed below call: 1-800-867-0152 UMD502 “The vaults at Federated Mint a re going empty,” said Laura A. Lynne, U.S. Coin and Currency Director for Federated Mint. T h at ’s b e c au s e a decision by Federated Mint to release rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars, some worth up to 100 times their face value, means unsearched Bank Bags loaded with U. S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars dating back to the 1800’s are now being handed over to U.S. residents who find the first three digits of their zip code listed in today’s publication. “But don’t thank the Government. As U.S. C oi n a nd C u r renc y Director for Federated M i nt I get pa id to in for m a nd educate the general public regarding U.S. coins. Ever since the decision by Federated Mint to release rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars to the general public – I’m being asked, how much a re the u nsea rched
■ UNSEARCHED: Each Bank Bag contains 50 U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars. Each coin is verified to meet a minimum collector grade of very good or above and the dates and mint marks are never searched by Federated Mint to determine collector value.
Bank Bags worth? The answer is, there’s no way to tell. Coin values always f luctuate and there are never any g ua ra nt ees , but we do know this. Each unsearched bag weighs nearly 3 pounds and contains 50 Morgan Silver Dollars and just one coin alone, could be worth $40 $325 in collector value according to The Official Red Book, A Guide Book of United States Coins. So, there’s no telling what you’ll find until you sea rch th rough all the coins. But you better believe at just $2900 these unsearched Bank Bags are a steal since ever yone who misses the deadline must pay $4000 for each bag,” said Lynne. “These are not ordinary coins you find in your pocket change. These are rarely s e en Mor ga n Si lver Dolla rs some dating back to the 1800’s so we won’t be surprised if thousands of U.S. residents claim as many as they can get their hands on. That’s because after the bags were loaded with 50 U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade quality of very go o d or a b ove , t he dates and mint marks were never searched to determine collector va lues and the bags were securely sealed. That means there’s no telling what you’ll find until you search all the coins,” said Lynne. deadline ends. This is very important. The Vault Bag fee has been set for $4000 for residents who miss the deadline, but for those California residents who beat the 48-hour deadline the Bank Bag fee is just $2900 as long as they call the National Coin Claim Hotline before the deadline ends. “Remember this, we cannot stop collectors from buying up all the unsea rched bags of coins they can get in this special advertising announcement. And you better believe with each bag being loaded with 50 U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars we’re guessing they’re going to go quick,” said Lynne. The phone lines will be ringing off the hook beginning at precisely 8:30 AM this morning. That’s because each unsearched Bank Bag is loaded with nothing but U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars some dating clear back to the 1800’s. “With all these collectible U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars up for grabs we’re going to do our best to answer all the calls,” said Lynne. Thousands of U.S. residents stand to miss the deadline to claim the Unsearched Bank Bags. That means U.S. residents who find the first three digits of their zip code listed in today’s publication can claim the unsearched bags of money for themselves and keep all the U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars found inside. Just be sure to call b efore t he 4 8 -hou r deadline ends. ■
