Be sure to vote in this stupid but vitally important election Editor: A hundred years ago California added a recall provision for elected office holders so that crooks could be thrown out if they were discovered to be unfit office holders. Unfortunately, the provision was poorly crafted and the result is that our elected state governor could easily be removed and replaced by a candidate with a much smaller share of the votes. If governor Newsom gets less than 50 percent of the cast votes, he must vacate his office. Then whichever of the 47 gets the most votes will be our governor — regardless of their qualifications or whatever actions they’d promote. I can easily understand how many people have their own reasons not to love our governor, but that alone is no reason to vote “Yes, throw the bum out.” Even if you are a strongly partisan Republican
who looks upon this as the only foreseeable chance for California to have a Republican governor, you should not risk the future of our state by placing an unqualified person in the driver’s seat of the very complex vehicle California has become. In Texas and Florida, we have already seen culture wars produce nutty government opposition to sensible Covid mitigation. Voting “Yes” to replace Newsom without being entirely certain a fully qualified leader from the pack of 47 will replace him is the equivalent of cutting off your nose to spite your face. Even if one of the 47 could indeed do a better job (something I doubt with a high degree of certainty), how can you think your candidate will prevail over the 46 others? Even if you’ve carefully researched and picked the best of the 47 or if you’ve listened carefully to the radio and are convinced that your guy will “Own the Libs” better than anyone else, the Las Vegas odds are that someone else could well get the nod with their greater share of the votes. The deck is somewhat stacked against Newsom because without non-partisan sensible voters voting “No” in this election, an election that looks mighty stupid, Newsom could be ejected. If not enough sensible people vote by September 14 with their ballots marked “No”, there will be no telling what sort of untested person will be elected to exercise the great

Westchester/Playa del Rey neighborhood council Editor: What is going on in the Westchester/Playa del Rey Neighborhood Council? A shocking thing has just occurred. After decades as an important committee on our council, supporting both public and private schools, the Education Committee has been disbanded by the president of the Westchester/Playa del Rey Neighborhood Council. Since its inception, the Education Committee has been the axis among all educators and
families in our community, coordinating with ease with the Education Committee of the Chamber of Commerce in support of all schools in our boundaries, public and private. At the last Westchester/ Playa del Rey Neighborhood Council meeting, the president of the Council disbanded the Education Committee, a position that had been filled by an unopposed person. The person who was unopposed happens to be a person of color. Was racism the motivation? It’s hard to imagine that a committee that has been a core component of work for our schools for decades would be erased if not for some insidious reason: racism or some political desire to change the balance of politics on the council. This action displays that the current Neighborhood Council is a bad actor. They hold no power in our city, but act as a potential option for people to join forces for the good of our neighborhood as ideas are sent on to the City Council. Over the last few years, the council has allowed dangerous discussions such as the explosive arguments against
creating more safety for Culver Boulevard. As was exhibited last night in a blazing automobile accident, this artery through our community does need the kinds of safety changes that were suggested, given the danger posed by a fire that blew up when a car ran into a wooden power pole. I hope this action on the part of the council is a huge mirror reflecting the destructive nature of our current council and that our community will rise up in favor of our schools (public and private) serving our children and educators. Our children need our support now more than ever as we begin our path forward in the new year with many health challenges to boot. We, in addition, need to ask: What is going on? Is it time to disband the council and take another, harder look at how we garner leadership for our community? power our Governor has to do whatever damage he chooses to do. Voting “Yes” is you saying, “It is more important to have a Republican in the governor’s mansion — no matter who they are — than to have an experienced politician running the show.” If enough sensible folks don’t bother to vote, chances are that we’ll have a governor far worse than Newsom could possibly be. “Santa Monica is a community that loves its coffee (and donuts) as much as we do. That’s why we decided to use the Santa Monica location for the launch of our newly redeveloped Randy’s Roast coffee, testing new flavor
profiles and coffee beverages paired with our handmade donuts before we introduce them to more stores. We’re excited to take Randy’s Donuts to the next level as a key player in both coffee and donut categories and it’s all starting in Santa Monica.” Randy’s Donuts offers catering and delivery, and currently has five locations in the greater LA area (Inglewood, El Segundo, Torrance, Downey and Pasadena, and locations in Costa Mesa and Bakersfield). In Spring 2021, the company announced plans to franchise the concept domestically and internationally, signing 164 franchise deals along with announcement of seven locations in Nevada over the course of the next 18 months. Founders Bianca Gates and Marisa Sharkey have developed their vision for a successful product with heart and substantial skill from industry participation in product design, manufacturing, strategic promotion and retail growth potential. The savvy cofounders had just the right amount of love for the product, compassion for female footwear challenges along with willful gusto to bond on all fronts. Generated by two decades of multifarious jobs in major companies, they blended their mastery together. From individually exceling in business, Gates and Sharkey became partners over six years ago and cofounded Birdies. It all began with a slipper… that became an indoor/outdoor flat and the rest is history. “Just over five years ago, we built the Birdies brand to give women a solution for comfortable, chic shoes to wear inside the home, and it’s been so exciting to see how the brand has evolved from the home to everywhere she goes,” Gates said. “In continuing our brand growth, this year alone, we have introduced more

This store and the unveiling of our new logo serves as exciting key milestones for our brand, and we can’t wait to share more of what’s to come!” “The Birdies brand has been built on the foundation of customer listening and engagement, and we are thrilled to further that along and connect with our customers on an even more personal level through our Abbot Kinney location,” Sharkey

Art as a Box of Chocolates Painter creates delicious eye candy to indulge and delight patrons IMAGES COURTESY OF PAT GAINOR
By Bridgette M. Redman Pat Gainor didn’t want anyone near her last year and it wasn’t because of the pandemic. Several large canvases arrived at her house and when she took them into the backyard, years of inspiration and her own emotions came crowding in, setting her on fire to create and putting her in an artistic trance. “My husband said, ‘I’d better not disturb her,’” Gainor said. “It kind of came to me — don’t anyone get close to me, I’m working here. All of these things came crowding into my head, who inspired me and what feelings I had. I had a real feeling for color and did these layers of paint in shapes.” The work she did is now on display in an exhibition called “Eye Candy” at Gallery 825 in West Hollywood through Sept. 10. Nearly all the abstract works were created during the pandemic. While some might fear that the

tragedies and stress of 2020-2021 would lead to works that are dark or reflect depression and anxiety, “Eye Candy” does the opposite. The work is filled with joy and life, it brims with energy, movement and light. “Someone said my work is joyous,” Gainor said. “I would like to elevate people rather than make them depressed. There is enough depression. I want to infuse optimism and joy in the world. This series has created a new language for me, a new way to do that.” Gainor’s artistic language has always involved using pattern as texture. In 2019, she went to Japan as part of the 19th Japan International Art Exhibition at the National Art Center Tokyo where her work received the “Award of Excellence” and was placed in a permanent collection. While there, she said she saw a lot of architecture and sculpture that inspired her and stuck in her head, especially the work by French sculptor Phillipe Starck

Gainor was also pondering the way Frank Gehry used to figure out how to design his buildings. “I have focused on developing a unique language incorporating pattern as texture in my work,” Gainor said in her artist’s statement for the Eye Candy exhibit. “Inspired by Frank Gehry’s process of studying his crumpled papers, I slashed holes in the plastic coverings of my canvases, letting those raw edges define
the perimeters of the shape where I sprayed layers of paint. The unique shape, color and resultant patterns in each painting are there for the viewer to enjoy and devour one by one as if it were a box of sampler chocolates.” The shapes formed from slashing open the canvas resulted in something that was different from anything else that Gainor had seen and that captured her interest. Once she saw the shapes, she felt like they

should be connected in some way and she started drawing lines to connect the pieces. She didn’t do it with every shape, but she said sometimes it would happen and she would add some sparkle or use gold oil paint and gold leaf to bring the shapes together. Then she had to decide what to do about the plastic that had helped her create the shapes. She started to take one off a canvas and then changed her mind, deciding that it looked more interesting with the plastic hanging over certain parts. “It gets painted on and it looks kind of interesting, it gives it a three-dimensional look,” Gainor said. “It’s the first time I’ve ever done anything like that. I was on fire. It is not like a math problem. It comes to you. It’s inspiration. I was just working so hard and getting into that zone and didn’t have it figured out before and then it just comes to me as I’m working.” She said it was the first time she’d worked in that way and came about partly because of the size of the canvases. They are five feet by five feet six inches, larger than what she typically works on. Gainor submitted the idea for the show more than a year ago. When 825 Gallery told her they’d like her to exhibit there, she got to work creating paintings for them. She was told that she should offer paintings at different price points, so she made some smaller works as well. The six large ones are on the wall at the gallery and the smaller ones are in the back room. “I worked so hard after (the commission),” Gainor said. “I worked too hard. I made too many paintings. I brought them in and they said, you have a lot of paintings here. I envisioned the walls as bigger than they are.” She worked on the show throughout the pandemic. Gainor’s spirited art works, some embellished with gold leaf, infuse welcome notes of happiness into the environment. she was able to go out and walk and have open space whenever she wanted. The pandemic gave her an excuse to not be social and to just concentrate on her art, which she says was good for her. “This show has been so predominant in my mind,” Gainor said. “I’ve really worked hard to get it all together and I think I’ve done some of my best work. Born in Michigan, Gainor was her high school class valedictorian which earned her a full academic scholarship to the University of Detroit Mercy. From there she went to New York and supported herself as a model and spent her spare time painting in Central Park. Thirty years ago, she moved to West LA, living near the ocean. For a time, she worked as an actor, but she has now left that behind to be a full-time painter. “Honestly, the movie industry is not kind to women and I have always loved art. I was always painting on the side when I was acting,” Gainor said. “It’s hard to have two careers. At a certain point, I thought why don’t you just enjoy your art and do that? It’s a full-time thing.”
She said she had wonderful acting teachers including Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg who believed in her. She said they made her observe life and people in a very in-depth way. “I think painting is like that,” Gainor said. “That’s what I want to convey. I want people to see my work and get a new joy from my work.” Gainor comes from a creative family. Her husband is a writer/ director/producer with a book coming out in September. Her father was an artist and a painter. Her brother wrote for the Detroit Free Press. Her son is a producer and her daughter is going to UCLA for interior decorating. “It’s in my blood,” she said. Earlier this month, her work was on display at the “Japan International Art Exchange Exhibition” at the Chiba City Museum of Art in Japan. Inspired by patterns, shapes, colors and the emotions of joy, Gainor is excited to bring her work to Gallery 825 and share her energy with anyone looking for a boost in spirits.

Sing for Hope Pianos Mar Vista artist participates in city beautification community project COURTESY OF ÇIĞDEM AKBAY

Sing for Hope brought their program to Los Angeles for the first time in partnership with the City of Beverly Hills and The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. “I learned about the organization from a friend who saw the call for artists and encouraged me to apply,” Akbay said. “We were previously in the same Arts for LA’s Activate cohort where we learned a lot about public art and civic engagement. I love anything and everything to do with the arts, especially public art and collaborative community art that engages children and is tactile. I’ve worked at a local elementary school over the years so I also really appreciate how Sing for Hope donates all the pianos to schools. The creativity sparked in

It’s a color loaded with differing semiotics depending on who you ask. I was fascinated by all the shades of purple I saw painted on buildings throughout my travels in India. To me it’s feminine, it’s power, enlightenment, a stance against male violence against women, as well as a stunning statement made by strong leaders in our country’s last inauguration.” The title of Akbay’s piano is “Çiçekli Piyano,” which in Turkish translates to “Piano with Flowers” and reflects her Turkish-American heritage. She also painted evil eye designs that are commonly found in Turkey and Greece and are superstitiously known to ward off evil spirits. Akbay’s piano is located at Reeves Mini Park in Beverly Hills, which is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. “The best part of the experience
was getting to meet the Sing for Hope crew and all of the talented, supportive artists with diverse backgrounds, styles and techniques,” Akbay said. “Sing for Hope and the City of Beverly Hills provided us with a great central studio space so it was nice to be able to paint while getting feedback and learning from other artists. After a few weeks you start to feel like family in such a space so I do miss that part a lot. The launch event at The Wallis was also incredible. They managed to bring together multiple art forms in such beautiful ways.” Several pop-up concerts are planned at various pianos until Sept. 6 and anyone can create a pop-up of their own. More information about upcoming concerts can be found at singforhope.org. singforhope.org @chigmaproductions

A Dog’s Legacy A Heart Away From Home pet boutique opens in Westchester PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ
Angela Anzalone recently opened A Heart Away From Home pet boutique next door to her Wagz grooming business in Westchester in memory of her longtime dog Berger. By Haley Beyer Local pet groomer Angela Anzalone adopted her dog, Berger, 12 years ago. Sadly, the 120-pound White German Shepherd passed away in January after fighting kidney failure. He lived another six months after his diagnosis because Anzalone provided him with the best possible diet and care. Berger was on an all-raw diet, including blueberries for treats, and participated in homeopathic therapy with help from CBD treats to keep him calm and pain-free. Because of Berger’s inbred genetics, he expressed high levels of anxiety and feared people he didn’t know. He appeared on the Netflix show, “Louis Theroux’s LA Stories: City of Dogs.” During Berger’s episode, dog rehabilitator
Brandon Fouche taught Anzalone how to deal with dogs that were more sensitive and struggled with high levels of fear. Berger’s appearance on the show helped save hundreds of dogs that would have otherwise been put down because of their behavior by proving that just because a dog needs extra care and may be higher maintenance, doesn’t mean they don’t deserve the chance to live a full loving life. Anzalone wanted to help other dogs like Berger, so she opened Wagz, a pet grooming boutique in Playa del Rey that recently relocated to Westchester. They specialize in grooming dogs that are more difficult to take care of, aren’t as friendly or have underlying issues and special needs.
PAGE 14 THE ARGONAUT AUGUST 26, 2021
Anzalone understands the struggle dog owners face and wanted to make it as easy as possible for them. She has even gone a step further in attempt to make the dogs comfortable by refusing to use cages in her shop and has found that she makes a better connection with the animals this way and the dogs are calmer. After Berger passed, Anzalone was heartbroken. “My dogs are my kids, but I believe Berger was my soul dog,” Anzalone said. Wanting to keep Berger’s spirit alive, she decided to open A Heart Away From Home, a pet boutique in his honor, which is located adjacent to her grooming business. Because of Anzalone’s experience with Berger and seeing so many pets at the
groomer, she knew she wanted to make the boutique a place where pet owners could get the best quality products for their dogs and cats. The store retails toys, treats, accessories and a full line of CBD products. It also carries a wide variety of food including freeze-dried options, kibble, canned and raw (all free of filler). “Some people show concern about feeding their animals raw food, but animals eat raw food in the wild and I wouldn’t have invested money and time into something if I didn’t see it work with my own eyes,” Anzalone said. The food was especially important for Anzalone to sell in her boutique because Berger’s diet is what kept him healthy and alive for so long.
“The saying ‘You are what you eat’ applies to animals too,” Anzalone said. “A lot of the health conditions that the dogs who come to me for grooming have could be fixed with a simple change in their diet. I’m not a vet and I don’t claim to be, but I do provide healthy natural foods.” “At A Heart Away From Home, we believe in everything healthy and everything natural,” Anzalone said. “It’s worth it to spend extra money on high-quality food because the money you spend now will save you from spending even more at the vet later.” Everything Anzalone does is for Berger, and she opened the store for the sole purpose of carrying on his legacy. “He changed my world, I miss him every day,” Anzalone
The boutique retails everything from toys and pet accessories to healthy food for dogs and cats. said. “My life went to the dogs the day I rescued him…in the best way possible. I do all this for the animals.” The store opened this past July and Anzalone plans on looking for ways to expand the business in the future. Right now, she and her business partner, Seven Cisneros, are working together to add a few things to the shop. Cisneros is in the process of putting together a website for online orders and delivery. A drive-up window will make shopping more convenient for customers on the run and puppy orientation classes will teach new dog owners all they need to know about taking care of their new furry friend.
But no matter how big the business gets or how well it does, Anzalone will always have one thing on her mind. “I’m really happy I opened this store, it’s all for Berger,” Anzalone said. “This is Berger’s legacy.” A Heart Away From Home Hours: Tues. through Sat. from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Address: 8728 South Sepulveda Blvd Westchester Phone: 310-306-1092 Instagram: @aheartawayfromhome AUGUST 26, 2021 THE ARGONAUT PAGE 15

WII ARE NOT AMUSED During quarantine, my boyfriend started spending two or three hours a night playing video games. Not only do I think this is unhealthy (since video games apparently lead to violence and psychological problems), but I think gaming has become a coping mechanism/ escape tool for him. How can I get him to stop? — Annoyed Claiming gaming causes violence is like claiming white wine causes stabbings. (Give somebody a sip of Chardonnay and before you know it, they’ll be dealing meth and then arrested, convicted, and shanking somebody in prison.) There’s been a lot of “moral panic” over video gaming. A moral panic is a mass overreaction to some behavior, art form or group of people, driven by the fear that it poses a threat to society’s values and the social order. Examples include rock lyrics said to be corrupting teenagers and the belief in the 1980s that satanic cults were running nursery schools. About the latter, Margaret Talbot explained in The New York Times Magazine that day care worker/“Devil-worshippers” were supposedly “raping and sodomizing children, practicing ritual sacrifice, shedding their clothes, drinking blood and eating feces, all unnoticed by parents, neighbors and the authorities.” It’s easy to succumb to a moral panic. Though we like to see ourselves as careful, rational thinkers, when we’re afraid we engage in reasoning that’s better described as “emotioning.” This makes us prone to believe “if it bleeds, it leads” news stories that report “research says” video games are addictive, lead to social isolation, and cause those who play them to become violent or more violent. These media reports aren’t lies per se, but the product of reporters understandably unable to parse scientific methodology – usually because they were reporting on celebrities or City Hall until, like, Tuesday, when they got assigned to the science beat. They have no chops to critically analyze studies that, for example, claim video gaming turns normal teens into violent teens: like, if you let a kid play shootem-up games, he’s supposedly more likely to take to a campus bell tower with an AR-15. Reporters inexperienced in covering science typically chronicle the findings of just one (possibly flawed) study – without reviewing the body of research on gaming (dozens or even hundreds of studies). If they did this, they would see “the emerging picture from the research literature,” summed up by psychologist Pete Etchells, who studies the psychological and
behavioral effects of playing video games: “Video games don’t appear to have a meaningful impact on aggressive behavior, and certainly aren’t the root cause of mass acts of societal violence.” So, what about studies that claim otherwise? Experimental psychologists Andrew Przybylski and Amy Orben explain that this research is largely “riddled with methodological errors” – errors so major they change the conclusion of a study. (And whaddaya know, the error-driven conclusion is typically the newsmeaty: “Lock up your kid’s Nintendo, lady, or you’re gonna be putting your house up for bail.”) That said, you aren’t wrong that video games can be a “coping mechanism”: thinking and/or behavior we deploy to manage stressful situations and painful emotions. Coping mechanisms themselves – whether going for a run, taking a bath, or engaging in a couple hours of Mortal Kombat – are not bad. On the other hand, if your boyfriend is at risk of losing his job because he can’t stop gaming or burglarizes the neighbors to buy a bunch of new games, well, that reflects what Przybylski and Orben call “problematic gaming.” However, they explain that this afflicts only a “small subset” of gamers, and it’s likely driven by underlying problems such as anxiety and depression. In other words, problematic gaming is a symptom, not the problem itself. By the way, contrary to the tired ‘80s/‘90s stereotype of video games played by an isolated loser in the basement, online gaming connects gamers around the globe. Gamers make friends and are part of a community. (Best of all, in the virtual world, nobody’s breathing on anybody, so gamers’ friendships are immune to lockdowns.) And though there’s a widespread assumption that gaming causes social awkwardness, it often opens up a social world for the sort of person who’d rather RVSP to be put to death than go make small talk face to face at a party. Now, maybe you are so anti-video game that your relationship just won’t fly anymore. But consider whether it’s actually your boyfriend’s gaming that’s bothering you – or whether you’re longing for more attention than he’s been giving you. If it’s the latter, chances are the answer is not just time spent but quality time: being really present and affectionate when you’re together. Tell him what you need, and see whether he’s up for providing it. It’s understandably upsetting to have serious competition for your boyfriend’s attention – whether it’s from another woman or the 26 druids he has to gun down before dinner.

THE ARGONAUT REAL ESTATE Q&A In this strong seller’s market — do you have any advice on opportunities for buyers? There are always opportunities. For current homeowners, you continue to benefit from historically high prices. As many see their neighbors’ sales prices, the fear of missing out on these profits has spurred more new listings than we have seen in a while. More inventory provides more choice for buyers and stabilizes prices. While prices are still elevated from this time last year, the past few months prices have flattened out somewhat and not increasing at the previous pace. If you follow the market closely, you will have noticed price reductions becoming a little more frequent. Any normalization in the negotiation for real estate is a positive development. A stable market does not crash. In today’s market, especially locally, where our median home prices are approximately double the nationwide, it’s our first-time homebuyers who have been squeezed out.
