Recently, California attempted to pass Proposition 16 to restore “affirmative action” statewide in the universities and government. This means that someone’s race, ethnicity, or gender could have been classified as a deciding factor in college admissions, hiring, and spending. The Asian community would have borne the brunt of this unfair decision, with top schools placing a quota on the number of accepted students who claim Asian Heritage.

Missing lawn signs
One of the loudest proponents of Prop 16, Malia Cohen, is running for State Controller. She claimed that she and her cohorts were dismantling the “structural racism” in California, but by backing Proposition 16 she is showing the hypocrisy in her statements.
We’re playing a dangerous game by supporting people like Malia Cohen. The very backbone of California is inclusion and equal opportunity; regardless of race, ethnicity, or gender. This November, I’ll be standing for what I believe by voting

The Venice swim team tradition has been around for decades. The event was open to all members of the VHS aquatics family (swim, dive and water polo teams), alumni and current swimmers, and their friends and families.
The Venice High School alumni swim team recently hosted its annual beach bonfire event at Dockweiler Beach.
The event was open to all members of the VHS aquatics family, alumni and current swimmers, their friends and families.
efore the start of the new school year, the Venice High School alumni swim team hosted its annual beach bonfire event at Dockwei ler Beach during the second Sunday in August.
“We had over 40 people attend the event,” said Shannon O’Brien, alumni swim team coordinator. “The eldest was an alumni swim team member from the class of 1968, and the youngest was an 8th grader who plans to swim when he attends Venice in another year. We had a variety of class years attend the event,
Attendees enjoyed food, drinks, and an assortment of games including corn hole, tug-o-war, baseball, and making sand castles. After sundown, everyone gathered around a beach bonfire.
“The Venice alumni swim team is one big family,” O’Brien said. “It doesn’t matter where you are in life, you always have a home with us. You are always welcome to join our events, bring your friends and family, and participate at the level that you are comfortable with. I do these events to give people something positive to look forward to. My goal is to create good memories that people can look back on as they move through life.”

Recently, students at Wish Charter School attended a three-day retreat and were able to unplug, forge new friendships and have fun while doing it.
Peter Bustin and Poppy Hales explained in more detail about some of the science activities that the students learn:
While Pali Institute is an educational based program and geared for school groups during the academic year, there is also a summer camp option. For parents who are looking for a sleepaway summer camp program, Pali Adventures Camp offers up to nine weeks of weekly stays where former Pali Institute students can enjoy a 15% discount.

or parents and educators looking for a hands-on and educational outdoor experience for their children or students away from Pasadena, Pali Institute may be just the place they’re searching for.
“At Pali Institute, our goal is to intro duce experiential education to our students by providing progressive learning experiences that extend far beyond classroom walls,” director Emily Bauder Balcome explained. “Through our innovative curriculum and excellent staff, students will experience the thrill of learning about the beautiful world around them. We bring textbooks to life.”
Founded in the 1990s by entrepreneurial visionary Andy Wexler, Pali Mountain (which incorporates Pali Adventures Camp, Pali Institute and Pali Retreat), has successfully offered youth a safe place to learn and discover while being supervised by highly trained staff for over 23 years.
With over 30 STEM focused classes to choose from, teachers and educators can customize their experience based on what best suits their needs.
While the vast majority of time is spent outside (weather permitting), indoor activities include eating in Huckleberry Hall, where students enjoy three kidfriendly buffet-style meals a day, and sleeping in staff supervised cabins with 10 students per room at night. The student accommodations are heated with 2-3 bathrooms and private showers per cabin.
The Pali Institute strives to keep students engaged the entire time they are there. During a typical day, they can expect to spend daytime hours equally divided between “academics” (learning outdoor science-related curriculum) and structured outdoor adventures. Nighttime activities include other fun outside activities like putting on a variety show, dance or movie nights.

"Cycofied" picks up where the band left off, with a punk/thrash/metal energy that touches on relatable topics to those from the Venice skate/ punk scene and beyond.
Brown and his brother, Jimmy, formed Cycotic Youth in 1984, finding success with their 13-track self-titled “Cycotic Youth” album in 1985, and sharing the stage with King Diamond, Death Angel, and Cryptic Slaughter.

Brown is proud of his career, which nearly ended when a woman made a left turn in front of his motorcycle in 2017. As a result, his left leg was amputated. Once again, his mom was his rock.“Ihad to make a change in my life,” he said. “I was going down a dark hole. I wanted to be there for the kids.”
In the studio, Jett pushed Brown’s vocals beyond the comfort zone.
“The show was my first tattoo in six months,” he said. “I was still learning how to walk on my prothesis. It was very eye opening, but it’s just like riding a bike. I still had it. I had fractured my wrist in the accident. In the hospital, I told them to forget my leg, fix the wrist. That’s my moneymaker.”
The organization turned a room into a makeshift shop. Muir is no longer a partner in the tattoo business, but the shop still pushes punk rock, cars and music.

This fall, S.T. Tattoo celebrates its 25th anniversary. The trade has allowed Brown to travel the world. He’s headed to Japan in late September to tattoo there.
“People have grown up and learned how to play their instru ments,” he added with a laugh. “It didn’t work out with Greg, but we’re still friends.”

Rinchen-Wongmo made her first trip to India after she graduated from UCLA in 1988 with an MBA focused on urban planning and nonprofit and land development. On a summer break, she decided to go to India. A land of cultural diver sity and beautiful landscapes, multiple cultures and breathtak ing mountains. And why not? Jobs were plentiful. She was young and had a couple of months to enjoy herself before starting a job in September.

While recounting her years in India, the book is also a lay introduction to Tibetan art, culture and Buddhist philoso phy. It puts in readable language
the impetus for her art and her fascination and immersion into Tibetan culture.
A rarer form of Thangka, known as fabric art using silk applique, caught RinchenWongmo’s eye. While both forms of Thangka serve the same purpose, Thangka fabric art can be much more promi nent, and function as a large, bordered wall hanging that can be several stories high and placed on the side of a high wall or building.
“What I have is the gift and opportunity of my personal experience with the art,” she explained. “It became a memoir because I wrote it from my perspective.”
As for her new book, there’s a different story to be told. It takes a lot of energy and focus to write a book. Rinchen-Wongmo is scrupulous in her wordsman ship and has openly admitted there are times when she doesn’t care for writing.

“Encouraging of wonderment”
Thangka as a visual art form has a long, storied history in Tibet. Thangka paintings were art scrolls used to uplift and encourage Tibetan citizens toward the virtues of Buddhism. They sometimes painted historical figures like the Buddha but, most commonly, the art form featured iconogra phy for idealized Buddhist virtues.

to Boston to work in urban planning. But the seed was planted. She knew that she would come back to India. Not just for adventure. She wanted to stay and spend extended time with Tibetans, whose govern ment had been driven into Northern India by the People’s Republic of China.
"Threads of Awakening" is Rinchen-Wongmo's new book with a foreword by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

experience with quilting, Thangka fabric art was some thing different. It was pictorial and reflective of Buddhist thought. Patches of silk cloth pictures were sewn together by horsehair thread. It required a delicate hand to create the patches and sew the images together.“Iwasstudying Buddhist philosophy,” she recalled, “and somehow it just pulled these two things together, and it was beautiful.”Itwaslove at first sight, and so, with careful forethought and gentle persuasion, she inquired around Dharamshala and convinced a local teacher to get her started. Between studying Buddhism and practicing Thang ka fabric art, she spent several years learning the craft and the culture.Itwas a serious shift in her life. Describing her previous self as an art “dabbler,” she trans formed from a curious observer to a committed practitioner. Starting from square one, she found her life’s purpose in the art form and the study of Buddhism. Both had a signifi cant impact on her life.

What drew her to this form of Thangka?
“The first trip was when I got hooked on the idea to travel more spaciously,” she said. “I met people who were backpack ing for a year. That’s when the idea got into me to return for a longer stretch.”
As for her own journey, she paused to reflect:
In 1992, her plan was to go to Dharamshala for a year. While living there, she had arranged a volunteer job with the planning council for the Tibetan govern ment in exile, doing economic development proposals and census planning. She ended up staying for eight-plus years, studying the Tibetan language and Buddhism and pursuing her passion for Thangka fabric art.

That’s what she shares in her new book ”Threads of Awaken ing” (with a foreword by His Holiness the Dalai Lama), which was released by She Writes Press on Aug. 23.

But beyond the personal experience, Rinchen-Wongmo writes about the beauty, humor, and strength of a culture that has been seriously undermined and forced to leave its home state. It's a cultural exploration through the written word at a level that a reader will find interesting, insightful, and even inspirational.“Overtheyears, I realized that my story might also impact other people who may not get to India,” she said. “But they might do something else outside their normal path. And even if it’s Buddhist, the book is intended to be universally helpful.”
“I have a skill,” she empha sized, “and I have a rare position and opportunity. I think I knew early on that it would be good for me to write a book about this art form. There are no other books about it. It’s worthy of a book.”Ittook her 20 years to get to it and five years after that to finish and find the right publisher to support it. But she persisted, and the result has been worth the effort.

There are many out here that enjoy Southern soul and blues music. Fans on the West Coast should have the opportunity to see their favorite perform ers live, so I decided I would bring the artists out here so that fans could experience their music live. I was very pleased with the artist performances and fan turnout. Of course there were some takeaways, but I believe all in attendance had a wonderful time. I look forward to bringing more Southern soul and blues artists to Southern California.”

Some of the things you can avoid having a tax bill from selling your home
If you do owe taxes on what you made from selling your home, different capital gains tax rates can apply.
Jesse Weinberg
If you’re selling a home, what you make could be taxable. Depending on your property’s value and other factors, you might be hit with a big tax bill that you weren’t expecting.
A capital gains tax is the fee you’re responsible for paying on profits you make when you sell an asset. Your capital gains taxes can apply to stocks, bonds, and tangible assets such as cars, boats, and real estate. The IRS and many states also assess the capital gains taxes on the difference between what you’re paying for your asset, known as your cost basis, and what you sell it for.

Capital gains on real estate can be taxed, but there are things you can do to reduce or avoid what you owe to the IRS when you sell your house.

Finally, if you make any improvements, keep your receipts. The cost basis of your home will include what you paid to buy it and the improvements you made over the years. If your cost basis is higher, you may have a lower amount of capital gains taxes to pay. Remodels, expansions, and other updates can reduce your taxes.
