Halloween Boat Parade returns for its 2nd year
By Kylie Werner Argonaut Staff Writer
The Halloween Boat Parade returns, bringing frightful and spooktacular fun to Marina del Rey waters.
Craig Malone — known as Dr. Capt. Commodore Craig — said the event’s
goal is to bring families and the community together while decorating their vessels.
“It’s great for kids of all ages and for adults who just love to go out on a boat with their significant other or whomever,” said Malone, president of the Halloween Boat Parade Committee. “It’s a great way to do something for them for
Halloween.”
Malone encourages viewers and participants to channel their inner Jack Sparrow for the parade on Saturday, Oct. 28.
Three years ago, organizers were inspired by the yacht club’s Holiday Boat Parade to start the Halloween Boat Parade. Malone said it was the perfect event to celebrate Halloween, and far enough from the Hoiday Boat Parade that it wouldn’t interfere.
“People last year were like, ‘Oh my God, what the heck? Did you see that pirate ship go by?’ So last year Capt. Richard won with his boat, and he has a 42foot sailboat that was totally pirated out,” Malone said.
To enter a boat, visit www. halloweenboatparade.com. There’s a $25 suggested entry fee, but it’s not required. The donations benefit Autism Speaks and Spirit Halloween’s charity called Children’s Spirit.
“They sell these rubber wristbands, and the donation goes to children’s hospitals all across the country,” Malone said. “Those wristbands are under $2, and they’ve raised over $1.5 million nationally. … And then locally, it goes to UCLA Children’s Hospital.”
The partnership between Spirit Halloween and the boat parade started when Malone visited the store in Marina del Rey and talked to the manager, gave him flyers to put on the counter, and asked to interview him. Spirit Halloween jumped onboard.
“(The) stores have everything, so go get your boat lights there, go get your
costumes there. It’s an amazing store,” Malone said.
The theme of the Halloween Boat Parade this year is “Hola Halloween,” a reference to the Day of the Dead. The grand marshal is Kirk Hawkins of KTLA 5. Sponsors include Tony P’s Dockside Grill, which will provide gift cards for the parade’s awards. There will also be merchandise for the parade and gift cards from other locations.
Among the awards are best costume, best lights, spookiest and best overall.
In addition to the parade there will also be a dock party for the judges and the committee members. Malone is looking forward to bringing guests aboard his boat.
Going forward, Malone is hoping to make a weekend out of the Halloween Boat Parade and add a concert.
Malone wants as many boats as possible so encourages any boaters to go registered online at the website and join the parade.
“The Halloween Boat Parade is real, and it’s spooktacular,” Malone said, spoofing a well-known “Seinfeld” line.

‘The Phoenix’ Rises
Choreographer transforms fantasy into reality in new ballet
By Bridgette M. Redman Argonaut Contributing Writer
Adalliance with some of the most iconic fantasy movies inspired Chasen Greenwood, a ballet artist who founded The Realm Company, to write his first full-length story ballet, a tale of love, coming of age, mysticism and rebirth.
Fresh off choreographing the Al Pacino movie “Billy Knight,” Greenwood was watching a Harry Potter movie when he was captivated by a scene with Fawke, Albus Dumbledore’s phoenix. He started to write. Then, he binged on all the Harry Potter movies, the “Lord of the Rings” movies and the “Hobbit” series and wrote some more.
He spent the whole summer writing, and the result was “The Phoenix.” The family-friendly ballet tells the story of a young phoenix who goes into the forest with her mother and is captured by an enchantress and her minions.
The ballet premiered at Westside Ballet’s Black Box Theatre on Oct. 22 with another performance scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 29.
“The Phoenix” follows the travails of the young phoenix from her capture through her rebirth to her eventual triumph, a triumph that happens in an unconventional way, but a way that Greenwood said the world needs right now.
While the ballet is family friendly, it is rated PG-13 and Greenwood intended it for a more mature audience. The phoenix must die to be reborn, and there are some intense scenes where the enchantress forces the young phoenix to watch the murder of her mother. The
ballet’s climax is a huge battle engaged by the forest’s minions, fairies, and the heroes who wish to rescue the Young Phoenix. It ends with a message of hope.
Greenwood wanted to avoid the conventional fairy tale black-and-white ending and instead chose an alternative response when the reborn Phoenix returns after the battle.
“The stage gets blue and everything’s quiet,” Greenwood said.
“She sees the devastation. … She shows grace, love and inspiration and light, which is what we need in the world right now.”
With the ballet written, Greenwood began drawing in collaborators, inviting guest dancers and selecting dancers from his company. He secured Charles Currier of “Resident Evil: Extinction” fame to teach and choreograph sword fighting. Jamie Ann Haley designed the elaborate costumes, including a gloved extended hand.
He worked with Tyler Briggs to score original music. The two collaborated on past Realm projects and their relationship allows them to create the music long distance.
“He’s doing it from Berkeley right now, and we’re creating it via FaceTime and Zoom,” Greenwood said. “We’ve gone step by step on it. He’ll send me music and I’ll say, ‘No, this doesn’t work’ or ‘This works.’ ‘I didn’t like that one in the beginning’; ‘that one’s wonderful for that scene.’ It just works perfect.”
For the ballet, he cast Cesar Ramirez Castellano as the hero knight, while dancer and model Holly Johnson is the
evil enchantress. Sophia Brown, a 14-year-old SAG actress and Westside Ballet student, plays the Young Phoenix. Other dancers include former Russian State Ballet Theatre Soloist Matisse Love, New York City Ballet Soloist Kathryn Morgan and New York City Ballet dancer David Protas.
While it has come together very quickly, nothing about the ballet is simple or left to chance.
“There’s so much choreography, and it is phenomenal moments that make this happen,” Greenwood said. “There’s so much detail work that creates this — like, the minions have their own world on stage.
While it is premiered in October, Greenwood knows this won’t be the last time it takes to stage. He’s already plan-
ning on expanding the story and dances. His company’s staff is in negotiations to find Realm a permanent home, where they can stage the ballet next year.
“The goal would be to have this longer with a much bigger budget,” Greenwood said. “I think I would want to add a lot more pyrotechnics and probably a bigger cast.”

WESTSIDE HAPPENINGS
Compiled by Christina Fuoco-Karasinski
“Fear of Heights” TO OCT. 29
Odyssey Theatre Ensemble presents the West Coast premiere of “Fear of Heights,” a heartwarming and often hilarious story about an Irish American kid’s phobias, family life and the meaning of success. Kevin Flynn’s grandfather, a tough, Irish steelworker, may have been unafraid to perch precariously on a steel beam high above the New York skyline — but young Kevin finds himself dreaming of the bright lights of Hollywood instead. In this funny, moving autobiographical solo show, the former professional soccer player and current award-winning standup comedian, actor, writer, producer and television host examines the American experience through the lens of his Irish immigrant family.

We at George Petrelli’s Steakhouse would like to express our sincere gratitude to the entire community for voting us Best Independent Local Steakhouse on the Westside. Petrelli’s Steakhouse, a Culver City landmark, truly exemplifies the realization of the American Dream. From it’s humble beginnings as Petrelli’s Airport Cafe, founded by Joe Petrelli in 1931 to George Petrelli’s Steakhouse, the Petrelli family traditions of hospitality, and serving delicious steaks that are dry-aged and custom hand cut on the premises continues.
Marie Petrelli, daughter of George Petrelli, and niece of Joe Petrelli, alongside with her mom, Sophie, is proud to be carrying forward the Petrelli family legacy. Marie is determined to keep her “Dad’s Dream Alive”.
