California Burning: The Getty Fire PHOTOS BY TED SOQUI
Helicopters dropped water and flame retardant to control Getty Fire flare-ups near the 405 Freeway and The Getty Center As of Tuesday evening copy deadline, The Getty Fire had burned 656 acres, destroyed 12 homes and forced the mandatory evacuation of nearly 7,100 homes west of the 405 Freeway, north of Sunset Boulevard, south of Mulholland Drive and east of Temescal Canyon Road. Containment was at 15%, with the voluntary evacuation warning zone extending westward to Topanga Canyon Boulevard and continuing school closures throughout Brentwood, Pacific Palisades and Malibu. Forecasts of “Extreme Red Flag” winds 30 to 50 miles per hour — with gusts up to 70 miles per hour — threatened to create conditions “as dangerous for fire
growth and behavior as we have seen in recent history,” according to a Los Angeles Fire Department briefing. More than 760 firefighters, including 123 fire engines, 14 hand crews and two bulldozers, were stationed overnight in vulnerable areas. All it took to start the blaze, investigators had already determined, was a tree branch falling on powerlines. On Monday and Tuesday, smoke advisories stretched for miles, including Santa Monica in particular and other parts of The Argonaut’s coverage area immediately south of the evacuation zones. County that followed the Thomas Fire caused 23 deaths and more than $200 million in property damage. UCLA Fielding School of Public Health professor Michael Jerrett said large fires start impacting the health of those around them immediately. “Usually within 24 hours we see increases in hospital visits and psychiatric or mental health struggles. We often see these elevations persisting for weeks,” Jerrett said. “Even though atmospheric conditions can clear up quickly, the effects on health can persist.”

arguments in a lawsuit attempting to block construction of the 154-bed temporary homeless housing facility slated for the former Metro bus yard on Main Street. The Venice Stakeholders Association alleges the city is in violation of CEQA laws requiring more extensive environmental review; specifically at issue will be a new state law taking effect Jan. 1 that will exempt government-funded homeless shelter and housing projects from CEQA review. A recent statement by Venice Stakeholders Association President Mark Ryavec claims that Judge Mitchell Beckloff “indicated that he had drafted a tentative ruling that would throw out the city of Los Angeles’ environmental review” of the project. Rob Wilcox, a spokesman for L.A. City Attorney Mike Feuer, said no such ruling was issued. L.A. City Councilman Mike Bonin’s office said the facility is still slated to open near the end of this year or early next year.

Former Women’s Club HQ Nears Historic Status: Historic preservation activists are celebrating a recent vote by the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission recommending historic cultural monument status for a building that once housed the Monday Women’s Club of Venice. Sue Kaplan, one of two Venice residents who made a presentation before the commission, said the residence at 566 E. San Juan Ave. is crucial to preserving the heritage of African-American women in Oakwood. “It was there that women in the 1920s and 1930s engaged in cultural, social and political activities at a time when they were prevented from joining clubs where white women were members,” Kaplan noted. Is Your School as Good as You Think? If LAUSD hides student achievement data, we may never know By Jenny Hontz The writer is a Westchester mom and communications director for the grassroots parent organization Speak UP. How much academic progress are kids making in Los Angeles public schools in a given year? It’s actually much harder to tell than it should be. That’s because the Los Angeles Unified School District has been keeping parents, teachers and the public in the dark when it comes to information on student growth, which compares the academic performance of a group of students this year to that same group’s performance the year before. The LAUSD Board of Education will vote Nov. 5 on whether to continue hiding this vital information that would help families better evaluate their kids’ schools. It’s worth paying attention to that vote. California is supposed to be a progressive state, but when it comes to education, we’re one of just two states — the other is Kansas — that does not make this student growth data public. Across the nation, student growth is considered a much better indicator of school performance than the system we have, which focuses solely on the average number of kids meeting state proficiency standards in English and math. Focusing only on proficiency tends to make schools serving the most affluent students look like the best schools, even if kids aren’t actually learning as much as they could. Schools with high standardized test scores, for instance, may be letting high-achieving kids coast and stagnate rather than meet their potential.
Jenny Hontz is a local parent and education activist Likewise, parents may be overlooking excellent schools that serve lower-income kids who start out far behind their more
ic progress in a single school year. If we identify the schools helping kids learn the most, we can examine what they’re doing right and use that information to help kids at schools that are struggling. A year and a half ago, Westside school board member Nick Melvoin co-sponsored a resolution with Kelly Gonez to give families better information about school performance, focusing heavily on student growth data. The point was to help families choose the best schools for their kids and to help all schools improve, and it passed on a 6-1 vote. A working group of parents, teachers and district officials spent a year and a half developing this new School Performance Framework, which was supposed to launch this month, during the application window when students apply for LAUSD schools of choice, such as magnet and dual language immersion programs. Because of politics, though, all of that

helping kids learn the most. Parents have long complained that LAUSD lacks transparency. If this resolution passes and LAUSD breaks its promise to parents, it will only reinforce a lack of trust in the district, which contributed to the recent failure of the Measure EE school bond. Speak UP has joined with 10 education and community organizations including United Way, Teach Plus, Education Leaders of Color, Parent Revolution and Families in Schools in calling on LAUSD to release student growth data to the public immediately. There’s widespread agreement nationwide on the value of this information. The National PTA and the Data Quality Campaign came out with a brief in September titled “Parents Deserve Clear Information About Student Growth in Schools.” Morgan Polikoff, an associate professor of education policy at the USC Rossier School of Education, just authored a report urging California to adopt a student growth model. The word Polikoff used to describe attempts to hide this data for LAUSD is “crazy.” “The resolution was awful and really disappointing,” he told SPEAK UP’s Leslee Komaiko. “The data exist. There’s no reason not to make them public. They could be useful to lots of different people, including parents, but also educators. As far as I can tell there’s no real downside.” We all deserve to have this information, and it’s time for California to get with the program. Instead of keeping families in the dark, Los Angeles should be shining a light and leading the way.
L E T T E R S CORRECTION: The Oct. 24 news story “Shower Truck Visits Venice / 405 Homeless Encampment” stated the incorrect name of the group operating the hygiene truck. The group calls itself Pit Stop; “Shower Power” T-shirts worn by the truck’s operators displayed the group’s informal slogan. Pit Stop is a subsidiary of the nonprofit Urban Alchemy and is not affiliated with local nonprofit Power of a Shower, which operates a hygiene truck on Rose Avenue near the Venice Boardwalk.

AND THE MODERN MAN Athlete turned rock star Niall Breslin puts mental health on the agenda for Ireland Week PHOTO BY RUTH MEDJBER
By Joe Piasecki Niall Breslin is the kind of guy so many guys want to be. He’s been a professional athlete, chart-topping musician and TV star, yet remains courteous and humble. He’s also struggled for years with generalized anxiety disorder and depression, and in sharing his story through a bestselling book, popular podcast and the nonprofit “Lust for Life,” Breslin has become Ireland’s leading public advocate for mental health and emotional wellbeing — especially for men. But “Bressie,” 39, is most definitely not a self-help guru. Some of that stuff, he argues, can be part of the problem. His path to wellness is about “holding negativity to account,” as he puts it — confronting bad feelings as part of human nature rather than pasting over them with happiness mandates that implicitly judge those who are not happy. Breslin decided to go public with his struggles after having a massive panic attack before a live TV taping in 2012. The result was the 2015 book “Me and My Mate Jeffrey: A Story of Big Dreams, Tough Realities and Facing My Demons Head On.” Jeffrey is the name he gave his anxiety and depression. This summer Breslin launched “Where is My Mind?” a conversational podcast about the basics of living with mindfulNiall Breslin took control of his anxiety and depression by refusing ness in an increasingly divisive society to hide them anymore moving at breakneck speed. As part of Ireland Week, which kicks off Friday with podcast on Nov. 8 at The Townhouse and lot,” says Breslin during a phone call IrelandCon at LMU’s new Playa Vista Del Monte Speakeasy in Venice. from Dublin. For his podcast to be part of campus, he’ll be interviewing Irish actor “Ireland’s connection to America is at the Ireland Week, he adds, “is a meaningful Chris O’Dowd (“Bridesmaids,” “The IT beating heart of this country. It’s somestatement that mental health is now on Crowd”) during a live taping of his thing we really value and we think about a the agenda on a big level.”
How would you describe Jeffrey? Jeffrey is somebody I spent most of my life fighting with, not really understanding and not wanting to understand because he hurt me. Jeffery is also somebody I felt I had to hide from the world, which made it all the more difficult. After 15 years of fighting with Jeffrey I’d had enough, and I decided I wanted to try and build a bridge of some kind of friendship with him, even get to understand him. When I first brought Jeffrey into the world I realized that it wasn’t my mental health I struggled with the most, it was having to hide it all the time. Your experience has been described many different ways — stress, anxiety, depression, lack of mindfulness … I’ve spent the last few years of my life trying to reframe the language around mental health, and I think the language has gotten very, very broad. The way I look at things is it’s about being human. Life is up, down, left and right, and sometimes it’s really, truly difficult. I think we’ve created this society where people believe we have to be unicorns and Care Bears and happy all the time — it’s just not real; our brains weren’t designed that way. I don’t throw around words like stress, because stress is important in the sense that it’s part of our brain. If we didn’t have stress we’d all be dead. So I think we have to look at things like anxiety as being normal, and anxiety disorder as a different kettle of fish. Having a few bad (Continued on page 10)

days is not depression. Depression is very, very intense. A few bad days are incredibly normal. It’s when your depression or your anxiety or your OCD starts to take over your life, it’s important that you realize there’s a problem and you address it. If you are human and you have a

People in L.A. throw around the word gratitude a lot. Is that a problem? Gratitude comes from the idea of positive psychology and what happens in the brain when we show gratitude and compassion. There’s huge power in that. But there’s far more power in teaching people how to hold negativity to account, how to
What I don’t think the world needs is another self-help book. Telling people to be better versions of themselves is by default telling them they’re not good enough how they are, which by default is why we’re all so messed up, because we’re all trying to chase this perfect, utopian thing that isn’t actually achievable. … Part of our brain’s design is the negativity bias, and I look at that quite a lot in my podcast: why these designs for life are now starting

Tonight’s Liquid Horoscope Drink your sign (or your date’s) with The Corner Door’s adventurous Zodiac Cocktails
The Scorpio Bowl is a tiki twist on a cosmic sign and an indulgent drink to share with friends By Christina Campodonico
Halloween falls on Thursday this year, and so does Mercury retrograde — a celestial season when matters in the spheres of communication, travel, and sometimes relationships, proverbially go awry. E-mail crashes. Flights are missed. Breakups happen. These, according to astrological wisdom, are signs that Mercury’s backward motion across the heavens (in reality an optical illusion) is wreaking havoc on our lives. As some astrologers have noted, it’s spooky that Mercury retrograde (happening during intense Scorpio season) and Halloween align this year. But don’t let this seemingly star-crossed cosmic collision dampen your Halloween spirit, advises Horoscope.com’s Senior Astrologer Narayana Montúfar, who told readers of Refinery29. com: “... Let’s not be too quick to shy away — the tricks this intense yet fascinating pairing brings can and will turn into treats for those that are daring enough to go beneath the surface.”
Live dangerously and indulge in this streak of cosmic mayhem at The Corner Door, where one (or more) of 12 cocktails inspired by the zodiac set the mood for mirthful Halloween fun. Created by bartender Liam Odien, the Zodiac Cocktail menu both invites conversation (“Tinder should pay us. It’s amazing how many Tinder dates happen here,” Odien says) and encourages patrons to venture out of their comfort zones. Some twirl their finger around the circular zodiac wheel on the menu and point, observes Odien — allowing fate to choose their libations for the night — while others allow their birth charts to be their guides (as my companion did when we visited at the end of Virgo season in September). “We have a surprising amount of people come in and try this extremely weird boozy drink that they never in a million years would have tried,” says Odien. “They try it just because they have some weird association with it.” Lift your spirits and raise a
glass with The Age of Aquarius, a “progressive, original, independent” and “humanitarian” mix of Real McCoy 3 and Appleton rums with almond, aloe vera and, yes, glitter, that’s “very, very slightly blue,” according to Odien. Channel the resilience of your inner Taurus with the Brazen Bull, a “reliable,” “patient” and “practical” mix of Wild Turkey 101 Rye, Real McCoy 5 rum, pineapple, bitters and absinthe (modeled after Odien’s star sign and favorite liquors). Get starry-eyed on the saffron, lemon and pineapple-infused vodka drink Castor and Pollux — representing the constellation Gemini as well as “the ethos of brunch,” says Odien — or the Lion OG, inspired by the sun sign Leo and cannabis culture. Served in a glass bong stuffed with sage (but not marijuana), it may nonetheless inspire another plane of consciousness with its smoky mix of Jack Daniel’s, brown butter, honey and citrus. If caffeine is more your thing, get buzzed on the flaming (Continued on page 23)

in Ireland when Donald Trump was voted in was we immediately said that anybody who voted for Donald Trump was a racist. That’s not true. I believe an awful lot of people who voted for him felt lost, disenfranchised, broken in a way. He went after that. And I feel this level of language and hate has taught people to start desensitizing themselves. I was in a shop in Ireland and there was a newspaper with a picture of a young child, the same age as my nephew, who drowned crossing a sea to try to get away from being killed. And I remember not feeling anything. And I thought: My God, have I desensitized myself so much that this image isn’t truly horrifying me and having me on my knees? It’s the same when you hear of 20 young people shot in a school. I had started to brush this stuff off, and I realized that’s not me — the thing I’m most proud of about myself is that I do have empathy, I do care greatly for others. And I could feel myself desensitizing myself in order to deal with all this negativity all the time, this horrible hate. I don’t want that in me. It’s not me. But the reason I [didn’t feel] is because society has become quite difficult. … These disparate, binary headlines are just hurting us. What grounds you? My family, first and foremost. Everything I do has them at the heart of it. The [practice] that grounds me the most, I think is mindfulness. For me mindfulness is about creating self-awareness, to know what in society really nourishes you and what fatigues you. Sometimes we’re moving so fast that we’re not aware we’re overwhelmed. It takes stopping to realize how overwhelmed you truly are. My family has always, if things are getting out of control, they’re the very first people to slap me in the face and say: ‘You have to address this.’ I feel blessed and humbled that I have a family like that. That’s something I truly have gratitude for. Something that really helped me was building a habitual pattern of compassion in my life. I practiced compassion. I said something compassionate about myself every day at one stage. I did show practical gratitude; I always think of five things in my life that I’m truly thankful for every morning before I get out of bed — I call it my day-framer. And I try to be as mindful throughout my day as much as I can. I try to find moments in my day where I can stop and not necessarily meditate, just moments that I stop. And one of the big things that I’ve built into my life is non-judgment, because I never know what anyone’s living with, what anyone’s feeling. … Good communication builds relationships, and the way I do that is I always try to see the world from the other person’s point of view, even if I don’t agree with it. … I don’t need to enforce my opinion. If you look

online, that’s where a lot of it has gone to. We shout and abuse people online and are outraged by everything. And if you’re outraged by everything, you’re outraged by nothing. What’s behind your books for kids? It’s important to talk to kids about emotions. If they can feel it, you need to give them language to talk about it. So that’s what the books became: using mindful techniques to give kids the ability to communicate how they are feeling. People would assume lifestyles in Ireland are different than in Los Angeles, but you’ve talked about texting-and-driving being epidemic in Ireland. What’s eroding Irish mindfulness? Where I’m a standing right now is Barrow Street in Dublin, which is the headquarters of Google, and they call it the Silicon Docks. Dublin now moves a million miles an hour. All the major tech companies in the world have headquarters in Dublin. It’s a different city than it used to be. Certain parts of Ireland are relaxed and beautiful and green, but Dublin is certainly not that. I’ve been to L.A. three times; this’ll be my fourth. I think the West Coast of America has a far more easygoing nature. Irish people are good fun, but we have a lot of cracks. One of the biggest issues we deal with in our charity is how Irish men have the highest suicide rate in Europe. For a man between the ages of 28 and 38 in Ireland, the highest rate of death is suicide. Why is this really good fun always having to crack? That’s what I’m going to be talking to Chris [O’Dowd] about in this live podcast. Chris is from the same area of Ireland as me, same age as me, same upbringing. I want to talk to him about what is it about the Irish man that we struggle so much, that we can’t address emotion. I look at things like colonialism and the church and make the realization that Irish men have never held their own morals or ethics. We were always told how to feel and told how to be. Only in the past 20 years have Irish men started to figure out ourselves. There have been huge social movements in Ireland, and we’re now seen as probably the most socially liberal country in Europe. Your perception of Ireland is probably quite conservative and quite laid back. We’re the opposite now.

cognac and cold brew in the Chiron, Son of Cronus cocktail inspired by the fiery sign Sagittarius. The bartender literally lights this one on fire! That drink is not only good for tried-and-true Sagittarii, like moi, but anyone who “wants a coffee or some spectacle,” says Odien. For an earth sign spectacle try Like a Virgo, made with artisanal The Botanist gin, eucalyptus and coconut. “The Virgo is like if you want to wear cocktail attire and be a little bit fancy. It’s super pretty, it has rose petals, and that’s probably the most like ‘hoity toity’ drink on here,” observes Odien. Then there’s vermouth-based The Scales of Justice, based on the “cooperative, diplomatic, gracious, fair-minded” and “social” sign of Libra, which Odien recommends if you’re feeling the vibe of “a fancy person on a beach wearing a linen suit, but you don’t want to drink something with an umbrella in it.” You can cast self-restraint to the wind and live it up with the decadent and totally extra (as my peer group would say) Scorpio Bowl — a playful astrological twist on the classic Scorpion Bowl tiki punch popularized by Trader Vic’s. The Scorpio Bowl’s “a blast with your friends,” says Odien, and can be served in a large ceramic seashell. Drink that one down slow through a metal straw and say “Aloha” to the two decorative neon-colored plastic mermaids and purple lei flowers floating in this icy mixture of mezcal, Amaro di Angostura, citrus and honey. Whether a liquid horoscope can predict a love match or inspire greater self-awareness may be subject to interpretation, but bartending’s association with wisdom is undeniable. “This industry serves an underappreciated and weighty importance, because people go to bars to celebrate. They go to bars to … grieve,” Odien says. “They go to bars for all these different purposes, and so it’s important to provide them with more than a good drink. It’s important to provide them with an experience that will suit whatever mood they’re in.” The Corner Door serves Zodiac Cocktails from 4 p.m. till close daily at 12477 W. Washington Blvd. Call (310) 313-5810 or visit cornerdoorla.com.
