his is the great thing about entrepreneurs: They make you crave something you never really realized you needed. In Heidi Hamor’s case, it was bringing a lovely Irish pub to South 48th Street at East Elliot Road. Since opening last fall, the Irish Hare has become a favorite Ahwatukee after-work hangout, but it’s not all about Guinness and Jameson. Hamor, a former corporate warrior with FedEx and Coca-Cola, put a lot of thought, experimentation and her own ideas into the menu items, which are based on her greatgrandmother Suzie O’Neal’s recipes. The Cottage Pie, which has slow-roasted beef instead of lamb – to differentiate it from the Irish Stew – is topped with her phenomenal garlic-asiago mashed potatoes. The Reuben, Fish ‘n’ Crisps, Bangers & Mash, Top O’ The Morning Burger and Great Grandma Suzie’s Corned Beef Hash are crowd-pleasers, too.

n 1974, Ken and Elaine Spinato had had quite enough of Chicago’s blustery winters and sweltering summers, so they packed up their infant daughter and moved to Arizona. The Spinatos missed their beloved Chicago-style pizza, so they opened a pizzeria, and the family business has grown to five Valley locations. The Ahwatukee store, with its large bar area, dining room and private dining room, was purposely built to be a place where groups and big families can gather. t this popular Ahwatukee eatery, five sisters and two brothers have been sending out hundreds of tacos and burritos a day exactly the way that Mom and Dad did it from a food cart back in 1981. The Ahwatukee flagship opened in 2000 and was featured on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” in 2009. Los Taquitos features a lineup of eight kinds of street tacos. Everybody loves the carnitas and its slightly sweeter cousin, the pastor. There’s also lengua if you want to take a deeper dive into authentic Old Mexico, plus fish, shrimp, veggie, chicken and asada. Most of those same options carry over to the tortas and the burritos and bowls, plus other options, such as green chile pork and red chile beef. New customers are often pleasantly surprised to learn that the restaurant makes a tasty breakfast burrito, too. Keep it vegetarian with eggs, cheese and potato or have them stir in some chorizo and other meats.

akana Sushi and Grill has been serving delicious sushi and traditional Japanese fare since 1994. Customers love the generous portions and good prices. The Sakana Happy Roll menu (all day Monday through Thursday, and Saturday and Sunday at lunch) includes a choice of 17 rolls starting at $3.45. The restaurant also serves a variety of udon and ramen noodle dishes. Ask your server for advice on the perfect hot or cold sake to pair with your meal. Sakana chefs offer periodic public and private sushi classes, too. For $45 or $55, you’ll go home well-fed and with a better understanding of and respect for Japanese culture and food.

ustomers love Perfect Pear Bistro’s signature grilled cheeses, contemporary decor and welcoming ambience. But after a while, they also come to appreciate what the restaurant doesn’t have: hamburgers, wings or TVs. “We let the sports bars do that,” said owner Chris Hove. “You see a lot of people interacting here, focusing on conversation.” Many of the grilled cheeses and other sandwiches, plus the popular G-Ma’s Mac, are seasoned with bacon. Patrons in search of something healthier enjoy the lineup of salads and quinoa bowls. Hove refreshes the menu a couple of times a year, so there’s always something new to try. “We have a lot of fun with our menu,” he said.

wners Rod and Kim Ticknor figure they sell about 35,000 wings every week at their two locations. Hungry patrons gobble up the hand-breaded boneless wings, strippers (boneless chicken tenderloins) and traditional wings with a choice of 21 sauces and dry rubs. The Ticknors got in early on the wing craze and with the franchise (called Native New Yorker then) when they opened the Ray Road store more than 20 years ago. The Chandler Boulevard restaurant has been up and running for eight years. Rod said the secret sauce behind the restaurants’ success is customer service. “Basically, you treat every customer well. The best thing we can do is take care of the guests one at a time with good food and good service,” he said.

K’s doesn’t have to prove itself anymore, but the staff hustles to provide consistently great food and service and keep a friendly neighborhood tavern atmosphere. “It all comes down to staff,” said co-owner Kendra Pieratt. “They’re exceptional.” Sports fans love CK’s 35 flat-screen TVs, which carry all the major packages, including the NFL, NHL, MLB and NBA. The full-service bar has 24 beers on tap. Regulars are looking forward to March Madness and baseball. And with free Wi-Fi, two pool tables, a nice patio and live bands on Friday and Saturday nights, CK’s has plenty for non-sports fans to love, too.

Last fall, the former manager for RA Sushi in Ahwatukee got the urge to re-enter the hospitality world with a coffee truck, then the brick-and-mortar The Buzzed Goat. Although the baristas are happy to make a classic Americano or cappuccino, the emphasis is on nitro cold brew here. “In Arizona, it just makes more sense,” he said. Try the signature Goat, a blend of cold brew, almond milk and light caramel, or the Mojito, a cool concoction of cold brew, mint and agave nectar. The shop also serves a variety of carbonated white tea frappes, plus an energy drink and a protein drink.

hris and Laura Hove sold their house and became renters in Ahwatukee in order to get Perfect Pear Bistro up and running in 2013. “That was very intimidating,” Chris said, “but failure wasn’t an option.” The Hoves had plenty of experience in restaurant management, however, opening new stores for Pei Wei around the country. Perfect Pear took off, and the couple quickly followed up with bistros in South and North Tempe. They’re eyeing a fourth location, and possibly a brand-new concept. Last year, they bought a house in Ahwatukee, too. “As owners, Laura and I have to wear all the hats,” he said. “The success we’ve had is very exciting.”

The preschool accepts 2-year-olds into its Toddler Program. At 3, the emphasis shifts toward getting kids ready for kindergarten. School days are short, three to five hours, but there are no naps or downtime. “Children learn when they’re engaged,” said director Michelle Rhodes, Ph.D. Teachers create their own curriculum but Bible stories and teachings are often used to support concepts. The school’s fun annual Transportation Day event in February has become quite the community attraction over the years, attended by as many as 4,000 families.

n Nicole Mathot’s seventh- and eighth-grade pre-algebra and algebra classes, there are lots of pencils, blue composition books and old-fashioned equation solving. What she’s really doing is changing students’ minds about math. “A lot of times,” she said, “kids just walk in defeated. When the light bulb goes off, they start believing in themselves.” Mathot said she strives to relate problem-solving to everyday financial transactions that students will encounter as young adults. “I tell them if you like money, you better like math,” she said. Mathot is a “Kyrene kid,” having grown up in the school district and graduating from Corona del Sol High in 2008. She graduated from Northern Arizona in 2012 and will complete her master’s this summer.
