Genisha Mills, Fourth Grade, Jacobson Elementary School 1515 N.W. Jacaranda Parkway • 480-883-4100 or cusd80.com/Jacobson
O
riginally from Trinidad in the Caribbean, Genisha Mills has been at Jacobson Elementary School for 11 years of her 13 years as a teacher. She said she has always wanted to be a teacher, and every day at her job is different and exciting. “It’s like my home away from home when I’m at school,” Mills said. Principal Liz Wolf said the school is lucky to have her, and Mills reaches out to colleagues and administrators to make sure every one of her students’ individual needs are met. Mills has been teaching fourth grade for two years so far, and Wolf said Mills has a talent for teaching in this grade by using small groups to instruct each reading level of student separately. Mills said receiving the award for best elementary school teacher is a great feeling because teachers are constantly thinking about their students instead of themselves, and it is an honor to know people in the community think highly of her work. She said she loves teaching because of the impact a teacher can make
not only academically for a student, but also socially and in the home life. “It’s not much pay, but it has huge rewards in other ways,” Mills said. “Working at CUSD has been a blessing for me.”

fter 20 years in the ministry, Paula Jones found herself compelled to switch careers, and she has never looked back. Her education degree includes a double major in choral and instrumental conducting. Now the orchestra teacher at Casteel High School, Jones aims to make her students see music as both fun and rewarding. “The main reason I love teaching orchestra is being able to watch students experience a new musical moment for the first time,” Jones said. “You can see the awe on their faces – there’s nothing like witnessing and listening to them grow.” Jones said the most rewarding aspect of teaching is the direct impact she has on the future of the world and society. Because she has taught some of the same students from fifth grade to 12th grade, Jones said she has “been privileged enough to help them become better musicians and productive adults.” “I love teaching orchestra, but I love teaching students more,” she said. Jones said she is thankful for the community’s trust and support by voting her best high school teacher, and called it an “awesome, humbling and daunting honor.”
“I stick with it because it’s humanly rewarding,” Jones said. Paula Jones “Every day is different and my mind is stretched by my content area, as well as relationships with students, parents and colleagues.”

right Beginnings School has been offering hands-on instruction in a wide variety of subjects for students in preschool through the sixth grade for over 20 years. Along with the traditional core subject areas such as math, science, social studies and literacy development, the school also offers at least an hour a week of computer classes, Spanish, music, art, health and physical education classes to elementary students as well. Principal Sophia Patterson said some of the school’s points of pride are its small class sizes, a classroom aide in every grade level and a strong culture of parent involvement. She said all these aspects allow for an individualized learning experience.

he Hangar Cafe at Chandler Municipal Airport sees several kinds of regular customers. There are the private pilots, of course, and all the instructors and mechanics who work for the airfield’s three flight schools. You might see a group of veterans who flew in Vietnam or Korea making three-egg omelets disappear. And then there are moms and dads and kids who are excited to see small planes take off and land. “The kids always shriek because the pilots head right for the cafe before they turn,” manager Emily Clark said. A lot of those moms and dads came to the cafe as kids. Started 19 years ago by Lillian George, who runs the cafe with her brother, Fadi Assouad, the Hangar keeps them coming back with friendly service and large portions of great food. You can see the owners’ Lebanese heritage shine through in the gyro and spinach and feta cheese omelets. For many regulars, only the biscuits and gravy will do. The lip-smacking homemade sausage gravy also figures prominently in the popular chicken fried steak, which can also be ordered as the Airport Burrito. Delicious, scratch green chile sauce adorns the Mediterranean frittata, the Hangar green chile burrito and the hash wrap. Most entrees are $8.99. Light eaters can grab the Mediterranean sandwich – one over-hard fried egg, spinach, tomato and feta cheese on an English muffin with a cup of fruit on the side. The best way to enjoy your meal and see the planes is on the covered patio. The inside of the cafe has an old-school diner ambience and is decorated with humorous, retro signs. Model airplanes dangle from the ceiling. The Hangar Cafe is open for breakfast every day from 7 to 11 a.m. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

alle Luna has been providing Mexican food in the Sonoran tradition in the Valley since the 1980s. It was founded by Tia Rita, who first tried out her recipes in Upstate New York in the mid-1970s to much acclaim. After Tia Rita’s passing, her son Bill and his wife, Janice, took on what they call an “old-fashioned” operation. Employers say the restaurant is popular for a combination of factors. Being family-owned and operated helps, they said, while the food, children’s menu, drink specials and atmosphere are appealing to many looking for a quiet lunch or a robust evening out. Valle Luna’s Sonoran-style Mexican food is different from Tex-Mex, New Mexican or Baja styles of cooking. Examples are the emphasis on beef in the dishes and the flour tortillas that are stretched thin and cooked on a griddle to produce small blisters that gives them a different flavor. “We’re part of a lot of people’s lives and have been for many, many years,” regional general manager Chris Espinoza said. “It’s a tradition for a lot of people.”

135 W. Boston St. • 480-739-9221 or originalsammies.com ho knew a weekend trip to California for their sons’ soccer tournament would inspire Jamie Votaw and Ariana Cooper to open one of the most popular dessert shops in Chandler? After a disappointing experience at an ice cream sandwich shop, the motivation for Ice Cream Sammies was born. On March 16, 2016, the shop was up-and-running and destined to be a booming success. “We spent the rest of the soccer weekend and plane ride home talking about how we could make such a better ice cream sandwich and how it would be wonderful to share with our Chandler city family and the East Valley communities,” Votaw said. Votaw said one of the aspects of the shop that makes their ice cream treats exceptional is its made-from-scratch ice cream base and
cookie batter – with no ingredients made with preservatives or “funky chemicals.” “So, I guess the question of what makes us different is easy,” Votaw said. “We keep it simple and back to the basics of scratch-made, yummyeverything that we have control over. That’s what helps us make the best ice cream and cookies around town.” She said it is hard to pinpoint specific menu items that stand out from the rest because it just depends on your taste buds. For some it might be the salted caramel ice cream, the cotton candy ice cream or a warm brownie bowl. “This is a family adventure for all of us,” Votaw said. “Our kids are with us at the shop often and in the beginning, they worked many hours helping scoop ice cream and manning the cash register, too.”

eff Weninger and Shaun Kelley opened Floridino’s Pizza & Pasta two decades ago to offer a family-oriented, full-service Italian restaurant. Since 1996 they’ve done so, according to Tribune readers who chose the restaurant tops in the Italian food category. Floridino’s has grown and expanded since then, Weninger said. Besides traditional dining, the restaurant offers monthly special events, a banquet facility that seats 70 and catering. “When we started, there were only about five restaurants in Chandler,” he said. Because they were early comers, they’ve had the opportunity to develop longstanding relationships with their customers. “People who came here with their parents now come here with their children,” Weninger said. And, when they’re there, they all seem to find other customers they know.

The Keg Steakhouse + Bar is the ideal spot for a fine dining experience at a casual location. What makes The Keg so popular? For one, let’s start with the basics: the steak. Cook to order and to your preferred specifications, the dry-aged beef gives the steak a sharp aroma. And you’ll never have an easier time cutting your steak. The steak itself goes down softly and delightfully. Not into red meat? No problem. The Keg Steakhouse + Bar serves a select menu of seafood, from pistachio-crusted wild salmon to sesame tuna or keg-size lobster tail. The restaurant also serves gluten-free selections for the health nut in your family. So, if you’re coming in for dinner with your family or just hanging out with friends, the ideal spot for Chandler residents is The Keg Steakhouse + Bar.

It previously was rated as No. 1 in the chain of 198 restaurants. He said it’s hard to pick a most popular dish because many of his guests enjoy combo plates. The beef brisket and the ribs are among the top sellers. The meat combos include choices of Georgia chopped pork, Texas beef brisket, Southside Rib Tips and Country Roast Chicken. “We go through so much of everything,” Sherman said. Famous Dave’s also is known for its bread pudding by customers who somehow find room for desert.

The Chandler location is one of eight in the state. Operating partner Reyna Dominguez said the food at Café Zupas has a freshness and quality unmatched by other deli shops. She said everything at the deli is made the day of, so nothing is kept frozen. “It’s very friendly and really upbeat,” Dominguez said of the environment. “Our employees try really hard to accommodate our guests and to do what we can, and everybody really enjoys working here, so it’s a really positive atmosphere.” She said the award means customers can see what the deli is really passionate about – its quality of food. “It’s cool to see how that translates with our customers in the city of Chandler,” Dominguez said. The restaurants also offer schools the opportunities to host fundraiser nights at its locations. The School Nights program at Café Zupas has donated over $200,000 to schools since it started, according to its website. Stop by Café Zupas from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday or 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday to choose from a wide variety of sandwiches, soups, salads, quinoa bowls or seasonal specials for a fresh-food fix!

ater, water everywhere, and so many ways for a golf ball to go kerplunk. But fans of Ocotillo Golf Resort, near Alma School and Ocotillo roads, wouldn’t have it any other way. They’ve been teeing it up and loving every minute of the challenge since the course opened in 1986. Immaculately maintained and managed by Troon Golf, Ocotillo features three ninehole courses – Gold, Blue and White. Golfers can play a quick nine, or mix courses for 18 according to their skill level and time. The Blue-Gold combination from the back tees stretches the course to more than 7,000 yards and pushes the slope (difficulty rating) to 133. (A standard slope is about 113; the maximum is 155). Designed by Ted Robinson, Ocotillo’s lush fairways, waterfalls and colorful planting beds stand in stark contrast to the desert landscaped courses traditionally found in the East Valley. Robinson’s design often requires golfers to hit their first shots – and sometimes second – over water. But well-struck balls create birdie opportunities for golfers who think their way around.

ow entering its 28th year, Chandler Center for the Arts continues its mission of promoting performing arts, creativity and education in the Chandler community. As the largest indoor cultural venue in Chandler, it works to attract high-quality artists and performers at competitive costs for audiences and the performers themselves. With its three theaters and 2,000-square-foot exhibition space, the facility hosts more than 1,000 events annually. This includes both local and national artists who bring music, dance, visual art and theater productions to more than 300,000 yearly attendees from around the Valley. During the week, Chandler Center for the Arts plays host to thousands of children who participate in a wide range of artistic and educational programs. This is no surprise, as the facility is a joint venture between the City of Chandler and the Chandler Unified School District. In all, more than 150,000 students a year receive an enriching exposure to the arts that they might not get otherwise. This year marks the fourth win for Chandler Center for the Arts in the Live Performance Venue category, which underscores the important role it plays in the Chandler community.

he Village at Ocotillo is described as a luxurious senior community. Residents can play golf, use the swimming pool and spa, hang out in the internet lounge, go to the on-site beauty salon and barbershop or dine in the bistro and lounge. Also available are a fitness center, on-site theater, library, arts and crafts room and a full-service restaurant that’s open 12 hours a day. The Village at Ocotillo offers three kinds of living options: independent living, assisted living and in-home care.
ig Two Toyota of Chandler, one of the East Valley’s largest dealerships, has been selected as the winner of Best of Chandler in the customer service category. The award is an affirmation of the dealership’s longstanding commitment to customer service, said Chris Henkel, general sales manager. “It’s everything. That’s what keeps us going, is repeat business and referrals,” Henkel said. “Some of our guests have been coming here so long.” Henkel said that part of Big Two’s philosophy is to take care of customers well when servicing their cars, making it more likely that they will purchase their next car from Big Two. “To have people come back and do business, that’s the best feather in our cap,” Henkel said. Big Two has several attributes aimed at making customers feel comfortable at the dealership. It offers a salon and serves customers complimentary water, coffee and snacks. A shuttle bus is available to take customers home or to work while mechanics fix their vehicles. Big Two has deep roots in the East Valley. It was founded in 1937 by Lon Hoeye, whose son, Chris, still operates the dealership. Big Two was an institution in central Mesa, but the move to a larger, more modern facility in Chandler has paid off handsomely for the company. Henkel said Hoeye feels strongly about giving back to the community and that he has been a significant donor to the Chandler ICAN program, which helps disadvantaged youths avoid drugs, alcohol and gangs.

t eight pounds and 22 square feet or so, your skin is your largest organ. It pays to take care of it. Dr. Rosemary J. Geary, who founded the East Valley Dermatology Center in 2003, became aware of dermatology as a teenager, when she suffered from severe acne. Later, she recognized the serious consequences of the intense Arizona sun and devoted her studies at the University of Arizona and her private practice to the early diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer. Of course, you’ll also enjoy the full complement of modern medicine’s age-defying treatments in a friendly and caring environment.

s a highly sought-after plastic surgeon, Dr. David Creech has performed thousands of liposuctions, lifts and breast augmentations since 1988. But he also knows that every patient has a thousand questions and that every procedure is unique. “My job includes educating patients so they can make wellinformed decisions,” he said. “Every procedure I perform is highly customized.” The doctors and staff at Ciao Bella take a similar approach with faceto-face initial consultations. “We carefully analyze your best options and address all of your concerns,” said Dr. Edgardo Zavala. “Each customer is unique.”

4015 S. Arizona Ave., Suite 7 • 480-400-6212 or sonoransmile.com he staff at Sonoran Smile Orthodontics makes hearing the phrase “you need braces” less painful. Sonoran Smile has been in the area for more than 10 years and has a reputation of great patient care with kids and adults. It helps that the two orthodontists, Dr. Shadow Asgari and Dr. Samantha Vu, both have children of their own. While the thought of shifting teeth and metal parts in your mouth may be scary, the orthodontists know how to calm children and make them feel comfortable, prepared and even excited for braces. There’s even a large Kids Center for busy parents to be able to drop off their kids up to an hour before their appointment. This gives kids a chance to play or do homework while parents run errands. Afterward, kids can be picked up and the parents receive an update on the progress of their dental care. The orthodontists at Sonoran Smile look forward to seeing their patients and getting to know them better.

lso known as “the doc that rocks,” Kelly Jorn Cook takes quality routine dental care and advanced cosmetic dentistry very seriously. But Chandler and surrounding-area patients also love his sense of humor and the easygoing office atmosphere. The decor includes artist-signed guitars and framed rock posters and album covers. Office info is printed on guitar picks instead of business cards. The waiting room features classic arcade games such as Ms. Pac-Man and Asteroids. Cook has been practicing for more than 20 years. The Kansas native received an undergraduate degree from Kansas State University before completing his dental degree from the University of Nebraska in 1989.
