ordell Sherwood is not your typical cashier/server. Customers of the sandwich shop are so charmed by the young man’s personality, superior service, efficiency and goofy bow-ties that it was inevitable he would become front-of-the-house manager. Not bad for an autistic kid, who suffered from debilitating social anxiety just a few years ago in high school. “I was an absolute wreck,” he said. “I could not look at people at all.” No longer. “I can put myself out there now, to where I am somebody that deserves something in life.” It’s a story that fortunately repeats time and again with Cordell’s co-workers, most of whom have autism and developmental disabilities.

hen Chef W, his wife Vanessa Luna, their investment partners and their mostly autistic young employees created Not Your Typical Deli in 2016, they didn’t quite realize what a beast they were unleashing. Gilbert residents, heartened by the sandwich shop’s mission, flocked to the place in droves, prompting a move to a sleek new space last December in Gilbert Town Square, near the Regal Stadium 14. The 60-seat cafe and 50-seat patio also includes a One More Bite Bakery outlet and a small Bergies operation that custom roasts the NYT Deli Blend. Although none of it would have happened without the delicious, Italian-style sandwiches, Chef W said it’s all on the very special employees. “They’re running the show now. This is their restaurant. It’s amazing what these kids have done.”

The 10,000-square-foot studio with seven dance rooms bustles with all kinds of ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop and tumbling classes. Those plush fangs won’t do you or the opponent much damage, but the big, loveable furball excels at rallying the crowds at student pep rallies, cheering the athletes and supporting the cheer and pom squads. Tiger is equally enthusiastic about pouncing on elementary classrooms during Reading Week and making appearances at fundraisers. Like most high school students these days, Tiger barely has time to take a study break, or a nap, even. Navey Baker, the student behind the mask who brought Tiger national recognition several years ago, went on to join the spirit squad at Boise State University and now is an employee of Gilbert public schools.

ichelle Tischer admits she’s “a little nerdy – I own it.” But the parents of the students in her gifted fifth-grade class at San Tan Charter Elementary wouldn’t have it any other way. After growing up in the Kyrene school district, Tischer completed a master’s in gifted education at ASU, inspired by her own kids’ school experiences. “They didn’t feel challenged,” she said. “They felt bored. I wanted to make a difference. Children deserve to learn something new every day.” Tischer teaches all core subjects, and her class resembles a traditional one, except students go a lot faster, a lot deeper and are required to do a lot more projects.

With choir, band and other programs, there are hundreds more. Bill Bitter, director of orchestras and chair of the Performing Arts department, somehow keeps everyone on the same page.
