11-2 Boise State Broncos
Head coach: Bryan Harsin 2014 Record: 11-2 (20th ranked) Always entertaining, the Broncos are no strangers to the Fiesta Bowl. In 2007, Boise State pulled off the upset of the decade, a stunning 43-42 win over Oklahoma that had the nation buzzing for weeks. To get to the 2015 Fiesta Bowl, the Broncos defeated Fresno State to win the Mountain West Conference title, becoming the top team from the Group of Five (five nonmajor conferences). This will be the first

matchup between the two schools. “I think both teams have played quality opponents and both teams, as far as programs go, have had a lot of success this season in particular,” said first-year Boise State head coach Bryan Harsin during a press conference. “It makes for a great matchup.” Harsin, Boise State’s offensive coordinator from 2006-10, took over the program after Chris Petersen bolted for greener pastures at the University of Washington following the 2013 season. Improving on last season’s disappointing 8-5 campaign, Boise State earned a spot in the New Year’s Six in the new College Football Playoff lineup. The Broncos are looking for their 12th win of the season. Heading into the Fiesta Bowl, the Broncos have tallied eight straight victories. The offense has been almost unstoppable since a 28-14 loss to Air Force in week five, scoring 50 or more points in four of the past six games. Boise State quarterback Grant Hedrick is playing better after early-season struggles. Hedrick can be turnover-prone when pressured, tossing 13 interceptions (with two four-interception games), so look for Arizona to blitz him heavy. When he gets comfortable in the pocket, he’s accurate, completing 70.9 percent of
his passes with 22 touchdown passes. He’s dangerous scrambling out of the pocket, compiling 563 yards and eight rushing touchdowns on the year. Look for Hedrick to try to victimize the Wildcats defense via the air—the Wildcats pass defense ranks 118th in the nation after allowing an average of 279.1 yards per game and a total of 27 passing touchdowns. Junior Jay Ajayi is the “ying” to Hedrick’s “yang,” an underrated weapon who compiled seven consecutive 100-yard games before the conference championship. Ajayi has rushed for 1,689 yards, which ranks second in Boise State history behind only school icon Ian Johnson (1,713), the hero of the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. Ajayi is also dangerous catching passes out of the backfield, totaling 45 receptions for 536 yards and four touchdowns. The Broncos defense, guided by coordinator Marcel Yates, ranks 39th nationally in defense, 36th against the run and 59th against the pass. Strong safety Darian Thompson leads the defense with seven interceptions, while middle linebacker Tanner Vallejo has a team-leading 86 tackles and outside linebacker Kamalei Correa has a teambest 10 sacks.

Arizona Wildcats Head coach: Rich Rodriguez 2014 Record: 10-3 (10th ranked) In his third season at the University of Arizona, head coach Rich Rodriguez won the Pac-12 South and finished 10th in the national polls. Rodriguez has been able to rebuild his reputation after he was unceremoniously fired from Michigan in 2010. It’s been a steady rise for the Wildcats’ football program since Rich Rod’s arrival in Tucson. Succeeding Mike Stoops, Rodriguez posted backto-back eight-win seasons in 2012 and 2013 before recording a 10-3 record in 2014. Not since Dick Tomey roamed the sidelines have the Wildcats posted three straight winning seasons. Arizona is on a nice streak, having earned its sixth bowl in seven seasons. Rodriguez has the Wildcats breathing the rarified air of the nation’s elite, guiding Arizona to its first major bowl since the 1993 season (a 29-0 victory over Miami in the ’94 Fiesta Bowl)— the heyday of Arizona’s vaunted “Desert Storm” defense. “We’re really proud of our guys, particularly our senior class,” Rodriguez said during a press conference. “We’re excited to be in this type of bowl game.”
Rodriguez is one of the architects of college football’s fast-paced spread offense. He cut his teeth as the offensive coordinator at Clemson (1999-2000), before perfecting his craft at West Virginia (2001-07). Over his last three seasons at WVU, the lightning-fast Mountaineers went 32-5 and came up one win shy of reaching the national championship game in 2007. Rodriguez is a proponent of the “speed kills” philosophy. The Wildcats bring a wellbalanced offense into this contest, averaging nearly 184 yards per game on the ground and another 277 through the air. Arizona’s quarterback is redshirt freshman Anu Solomon, a dual-threat who threw for 3,458 yards and 27 touchdowns. In the backfield, true freshman running back Nick Wilson is a homerun threat, averaging 22.6 yards per touchdown run, while amassing 1,289 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns this season. The duo combined for nearly 83 percent of the Wildcats’ total yards (5,006 yards) and TDs (43). On the offensive line, the Wildcats have a tough veteran bunch, led by bookend tackles Mickey Baucus and Fabbians Ebbele, who have started in 50 and 51 games, respectively.
The leader on the defensive side of the football is middle linebacker Phillip “Scooby” Wright, a true sophomore and classic overachiever. With a high motor and higher football IQ, Wright has been a one-man wrecking crew for the UA defense this season, racking up 153 tackles, 27 tackles for loss and 14 sacks. On obvious passing down, defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel will line up Wright at defensive end to pressure the quarterback. For his play, Wright won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the nation’s best defensive player.

Oklahoma State Cowboys Head coach: Mike Gundy 2014 Record: 6-6 For college football fans, Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy is best known for his epic Youtube rant, “I’m a man. I’m 40.” That episode aside, Gundy has established a winning program in Stillwater, compiling an 83-44 record in 10 years. The Cactus Bowl will be his ninth bowl appearance (5-3 record in the previous eight). A former quarterback at Oklahoma State, Gundy is a well-

respected coach around the country. In 2011, he won the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award, given to college football’s national coach of the year. After winning 10 or more games in three of the past four seasons, the Cowboys struggled with a tough schedule in 2014: Four of their six losses came against teams that finished in the top 11 of the national rankings. At one stretch, the Cowboys lost five straight Big 12 conference games, before a rousing 38-35 overtime victory over rival Oklahoma made them bowl eligible. Gundy is looking forward to facing Washington in the Cactus Bowl and earning his seventh win of the season. “It’s always nice to be in a bowl game where you know the coaching staffs, the head coach runs a first-class program and the players can enjoy the competition of the game,” Gundy said during a press conference. Oklahoma State’s problems this season were mostly on the offensive side of the football. The Cowboys lost starting quarterback, J.W. Walsh, in week two, giving way to Daxx Garman. The strong-armed junior quarterback struggled in offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich’s system, holding the ball too long in the pocket—Garman was sacked 25 times in seven Big 12
games. He finished the season with 2,041 yards, 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, eventually missing the final two games with concussion symptoms. He was replaced by promising freshman Mason Rudolph, who is expected to start in the Cactus Bowl. Rudolph has plenty of speedy weapons to distribute the football to. Receiver David Glidden caught a team-high 40 passes for 568 yards and two scores, while Brandon Sheperd led the team with 639 yards and four touchdowns on 34 catches. The Cowboys rushing attack couldn’t get untracked this season, averaging only 135 yards per game, 102nd in the nation. Tyreek Hill was the most impressive back, accounting for 534 yards on 5.2 yards per carry, while Desmond Roland led the team with 647 rushing yards and 10 scores. Given the offensive struggles, the Cowboys are no better on defense, ranking 93rd nationally in total defense (437.3 yards allowed per game) and 98th in scoring defense (32 points allowed per game). One bright spot on defense has been sophomore defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah, who leads OSU’s defense with 11 sacks and 17 tackles for loss.

Washington Huskies Head coach: Chris Petersen 2014 Record: 8-5 First-year head coach Chris Petersen took over the Washington Huskies program after former head coach Steve Sarkisian accepted the top position at USC. Ironically, Petersen left Boise State, which is playing in the more prestigious (and more lucrative) Fiesta Bowl. The Huskies had a solid season under Petersen, finishing the regular season with an 8-5 record overall (4-5 in the Pac-12), good enough for third in the North Division. Unfortunately, the Huskies couldn’t beat any of the better programs in the Pac-12, losing to Arizona State, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA and giving the game away to Arizona with a costly fumble late in the fourth quarter. Petersen is looking forward to his chess match with Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy, whom he admires. “A couple years ago I got a chance to slide out there and talk to coach Gundy and watch them practice,” Petersen said during a press conference. “I think that just tells you right there how impressed I’ve been with him. They’ve got tremendous football players out there. They just do a great job from top to bottom.”
The key for Washington in the Cactus Bowl is getting the offense untracked. The Huskies offense led the nation with a staggering 31 fumbles and struggled scoring points in the red zone. They should be able to fix that against an Oklahoma State defense that ranks No. 100 in the country (32 points per game). Huskies sophomore quarterback Cyler Miles finished his first year as the team’s starter with 2,129 yards, 16 touchdowns and just three interceptions. Miles is also a threat to take off and run, adding another 280 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Miles is coming off steady performances in the Huskies final two games (both wins), passing for 253 yards and two touchdowns against Oregon State and 249 yards and two touchdowns against Washington State. Top back Dwayne Washington led the team with 655 rushing yards and nine TDs. On defense, senior linebacker Hau’oli Kikaha, senior nose tackle Danny Shelton and junior linebacker Shaq Thompson all earned Pac-12 first-team honors. Kikaha is a terror for opposing offenses: he leads the team in sacks (17.5) and tackles for loss (23.5). Shelton, who weighs 339 pounds and regularly draws double teams, compiled 89 tackles, nine sacks, 16.5 tackles for loss
and four fumble recoveries. Thompson is a disruptive force at linebacker, beating blockers with exceptional speed and athleticism. He finished with 71 tackles and four fumble recovers, as well as four defensive touchdowns. His game-changing athleticism was on display when he filled-in as UW’s featured back, totaling 456 yards with two touchdowns. Washington’s defense is opportunistic: The Huskies lead the nation with seven defensive touchdowns.
