An outpatient surgical procedure is only requested less than 25 percent of the time. Patients are most likely to match someone who shares their ethnic background. Marrow donors are urgently needed to help save the lives of patients with diseases like leukemia, lymphoma or sickle cell anemia. The testing is simple—a painless cheek swab. Be The Match will host a marrow donor registry drive for potential donors ages 18 to 44 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 29, at Totspot Preschool in Gilbert honor of Hadley Mercer. Hadley, who lives in Iowa, is 8 months old and, in December 2013, she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. She needs a bone marrow transplant to save her life because of chromosomal abnormalities and lack of response to traditional chemotherapy. The March 29 drive is being held to increase the pool of possible donors for Haley, and to help organizers find a match for her, or someone like her. Kaitlyn Fishman is the community engagement representative for Be The Match. The organization was under the Red Cross’ umbrella from 1987 until 2001, when it established its own registry. “Since 1987, we’ve had over 60,000 marrow and cord blood transplants classifieds

By Alison Stanton For as long as she can remember, Lisa Osthelder knew that she wanted to get into the health care field to help others. “I thought about going to school to be a naturopathic physician, and so I started exploring and learning more about what I love, which is natural and holistic medicine.” After taking classes on canine massage and Reiki, Osthelder was hooked. “I thought, ‘Whoa, this is really cool.’ Reiki was my first experience with holistic medicine, and everything just clicked for me.” After additional training in BodyTalk and Reconnective Healing, Osthelder, a Gilbert resident, began to work with people. When some of her clients asked her to use the same techniques on their animals, she had another epiphany. “I remember thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, animals respond to this as well.’” Osthelder began to look for animal-

specific holistic training that focuses on the different energy fields that animals have. She enrolled in the Healing Touch for Animals program, and during the course of her training, had what she described as a “profound emotional and spiritual experience with a horse.” “I realized at that point that I really needed to use energy healing to help animals.” Osthelder became a Healing Touch for Animals practitioner and Arizona coordinator. She spends her days meeting dogs, cats and horses—as well as their owners—and helping the animals to heal from emotional and/ or physical trauma, injury and illness. “Many people who come to me are at their wits’ end, and they have tried everything,” Osthelder said. “In a lot of ways, animals are like small children because they cannot talk to tell their owners what is wrong. I am dedicated to giving all of these wonderful critters a voice and to help

them with whatever healing they need.” To help make sure that the animals are as relaxed as possible, Osthelder makes house calls throughout Gilbert and the East Valley. Her sessions run from $147 for one appointment up to $599 for five visits. Remote appointments are also available. For Jeny Wells of Gilbert, Osthelder was able to help As a Healing Touch for Animals practitioner, Lisa her dogs—a yorkie named Osthelder is passionate about helping animals Chloe and a Japanese chin recover from emotional and physical trauma. mix named Jazzy—when no one else explaining that the doggie door was could. View More Than 100 Quilts at Gilbert Museum By Meghan McCoy More than 100 quilts will fill the Gilbert Historical Museum for three months as part of the “What’s Old is New” Art of Quilting Show to exhibit local residents’ masterpieces. “While quilting has been around for centuries, quilters find ways to adapt styles and patters to fit today’s busy lifestyle,” said Kayla Kolar, Gilbert Historical Museum executive director. “Many think it is a dying art, but there are a lot of younger women, and a few men, who have taken up this craft. They have just found quicker and easier ways to do things.” The ninth annual event will run from Tuesday, March 4, through Saturday, May 31, during regular hours. Improv Troupe Find New Home at Tuscany Theatre By Lynette Carrington Actor’s Youth Theatre has been a staple in the East Valley since 2003. Fast forward a decade and it has landed a home in the Tuscany Theatre in Gilbert. Tuscany Theatre is also home to The Black Mustache Old-Fashioned Melodrama Co. and Off the Cuff improv group. Actor’s Youth Theatre Executive Director Marcus Ellsworth and his sister, Julie Clement, founded the theater and love their new home that also includes space for acting, drama, voice, workshops, dance and painting classes. “We both love doing this and love working with kids and we love what theater does for kids,” Ellsworth said. Ellsworth is directing “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Jr.” which runs through March 8 at Tuscany Theatre. “We wanted to do classics and Broadway shows,” Ellsworth said. “Kids hear about these shows and with this theater, they can come and be in the shows.” An Athlos Traditional Academy sixth grader, actress Sydney Del Fosse has the lead as “Belle” in “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Jr.” “I started doing theater two summers ago with Actor’s Youth Theatre in ‘Cinderella,’” stated De Fosse who has since gone one to act in many of the theater’s productions. Watching the young lady rehearse her role as Belle proved that even at a young age, she’s a professional. “I love the kindness of everybody here,” she stated. “I can be myself here, but, I can also be somebody else... March 2014

someone else that I’m not in real life.” Following “Beauty and the Beast” is a film screening of “A Superhero Comedy” in either the end of March or beginning of April. Then comes “The Taming of the Shrew” (April 2-5 and 9-12), “Camelot” (May 7-10 and 1417), an undetermined summer show (June 25-July 3) and “A Cockeyed Fairy Tale” (July 30-Aug. 2 and Aug. 6-9). “We have a safe, family friendly, clean and professional environment here,” Ellsworth said. Kids and adults of all ages enjoy the productions and performances often sell out the 120seat theater. The Black Mustache OldFashioned Melodrama Co. presents performances year-round. Off the Cuff and Off the Cuff Jr. improv groups also perform monthly. Auditions for the various performance groups occur frequently. Check the website www.theblackmustache.com for performances and auditions. “There are so many benefits of having kids in theater, among them self-esteem and confidence.” Ellsworth explained. “Kids grow and find out who they are through theater and they end up liking who they are.” Tuscany Theatre is located at 861 N. Higley Rd. (at Guadalupe Road). For more information, a schedule of shows, auditions and classes or to purchase tickets, visit www. actorsyouththeatre.org. Actor’s Youth Theatre is a nonprofit organization. Look for its annual fundraising masquerade ball coming to Mesa in late April.

There’s More Than ‘Talking With The Animals’ At Zoo Camp 2014 By Tracy House Feed a tortoise, bathe an elephant, hang out with a rhino and yes, talk with the animals. Camp Zoo at the Phoenix Zoo is making plans for summer camp 2014. This animal-filled adventure runs June 2 through July 25 for kids in kindergarten through eighth grade. Camps are weeklong sessions and offered as full and half-day camps. Dean Watanabe, family program supervisor at the Phoenix Zoo, said, “In a typical day of camp, we start at 8 a.m., kids check in and get situated into their groups and from there we are off and running.” Campers are separated into ageappropriate groups, kindergarten through eighth grade. Each age group has an animal-based curriculum that includes interaction with the animals, crafts and experiential learning.

“The kids all have an airconditioned home base,” he said. “That’s very important. We have new facilities here at the Phoenix Zoo. Usually we’ll start out with some kind of opening circle and then from there we’ll explore the zoo, we’ll have animals visit them in their classroom, all of their activities have to do with the daily and weekly theme.” Camp Zoo offers eight sessions with bi-weekly themes of alternating curriculum ranging from Storybook Safaris to Who Works at the Zoo? In addition to the themes, Watanabe said there is a lot of behind-the-scenes action the campers will be involved in. “A lot of cleaning and feeding, opportunities to do stuff that the general public never gets to do.” As hot as it is to be outside in the summer heat here in the Valley,

Watanabe said the camp does take precautions for the campers. “All of the kids get a water bottle and a hat as part of what we issue them for camp. And we’re constantly drinking and filling that up. We incorporate water play into their day at the zoo.” Campers cool off at one of the two water pads and most of the hikes and Campers at Camp Zoo make a few “new” friends outdoor explorations take place and experience the amazing interactions and experiential learning at the Phoenix Zoo in its in the mornings to avoid the unique and fascinating summer camps offered June 2 through July 25. higher temperatures. Riparian Preserve Provides Education, Outdoor Experiences for Family Fun By Tracy House Getting up close to nature, learning about habitats and interacting with critters is just part of the Riparian Preserve experience available to the public. The Riparian Preserve was built in 2000 as part of the Town of Gilbert’s water reclamation process. The 110-acre facility provides educational, recreational and research opportunities for individuals to experience year round. Lisa Herrmann, the preserve’s community education coordinator, explained, “By letting the water percolate in the ground we create a riparian habitat that is critical for Arizona’s wildlife. The natural

courses of riparian habitat have been diminishing due to both natural and human caused changes so we’ve got an area of the project which is a winwin situation.” The area provides a water supply and environmental needs through the habitat. Herrmann mentioned there have been more than 250 species of birds sighted on the preserve. Other types of wildlife include jackrabbits, frogs, turtles, some varieties of snakes, lizards and fish. Family friendly festival Herrmann mentioned that the preserve is having its annual Feathered Friends and Smart Living Festival 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 5. This family friendly festival has been held for 14 years and Herrmann explained this year they’ve joined with the Maricopa County Library to present the free event. “We’ve got all kinds of different ways to learn about nature and sustainable lifestyles,” Herrmann said. “Booths are set up by different organizations that will have games and crafts and interactive learning opportunities.” Included in the activities will be walks, opportunities to interact with the critters including reptiles, birds and other surprises. Unlike other festivals, Herrmann explained that the sponsor and vendors’ booths will be providing some sort of learning opportunity for participants. “That’s our only requirement for participating—is they have to be learning about nature.” Each booth will be providing some kind of learning activity—crafts or games. Feathered Friends and Smart Living Festival participants so far include: Radical Reptiles, Simply Tortoises, Liberty Wildlife, Nature Conservancy of Arizona, Arizona Museum for

6 Frugal Tips Help You Sleep Better pasta vixen

mom cents

Are you tired of taking expensive over-the-counter sleeping medications that just don’t seem to work, or leave you feeling groggy? Getting restful sleep can be a challenge, but you don’t need to spend big bucks that bust your budget to catch some Zzzs. Create some white noise. Create some calm and consistent background noise. It may be just the thing you need to relax. Turn on a small fan to create not only some fresh air circulation but a nice soft hum. Download free meditation music. Amazon.com often offers free songs or 99-cent album downloads. Look for some meditation music that you can get for free or cheap. Then at the end of the day, just push play and relax. photo page

Behold the power of herbs. Keep an herbal sachet near your pillow. Lavender and vanilla are known to induce sleep and relaxation. Use fresh herbs and just place in a muslin bag or fabric sachet, then place under your pillow where you can enjoy the aromatic properties. Power down. Unplug and power down all distractions such as telephones and televisions. There is no quicker way to interrupt your drifting than an electronic device flashing and making noise.

Enjoy a warm, noncaffeinated drink. Treat yourself to a tea cup of warm water steeped with lemon or fresh herbs, or a little warm milk with a sprinkle of cinnamon. Think of this as a treat. Sit in bed with your cup and saucer, drink slowly and imagine your body unwinding with each sip. Take care of your linens. Treat your bedding well. Wash it once a week with a gentle detergent that won’t irritate your skin. Use a natural fabric softener or fresh herbs to add a light fragrance. Shake your bedding out daily before making your bed up, smooth your blankets out and fluff your pillows. This only takes a few minutes, and at the end of the day you will feel like you are falling into a fancy bed in a fivestar resort.

Mardi Gras Gumbo March is Mardi Gras month. Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday,” is the last night of eating rich foods before fasting for lent. So let the indulging begin with this amazing and hearty recipe for seafood and sausage gumbo! My

thanks to Scottsdale resident Kathy Rice for sharing this festival of flavors in a bowl! Note: Gumbo is a soup, but it is often served over rice as a main course.

Seafood and Sausage Gumbo 3 pounds raw shrimp (16 count) in shell 1 1/2 quarts water 4 onions, 2 of them quartered, the rest diced 4 bay leaves 3/4 cup vegetable oil 1 cup all-purpose flour 5 tablespoons margarine or butter 2 green bell peppers, seeded and minced 4 celery stalks, minced 1 1/2 pounds Andouille sausage, cut into 1/2-inch slices 3 cups fresh okra, cut into 1/2-inch slices (may substitute frozen) 3 garlic cloves, crushed 1/2 teaspoon fresh or dried thyme leaves 2 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon white pepper 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 cup hot pepper sauce (adjust to taste optional) 2 cups chopped, peeled fresh or canned plum tomatoes (I prefer canned) 1 pound fresh crabmeat Boiled rice, to serve Crusty bread for dunking

1. Peel and de-vein the shrimp; reserve the heads and shells. Cover and chill the shrimp while you make the sauce. 2. Place the shrimp heads and shells in a saucepan with the water, 2 quartered onions, and 1 of the bay leaves and bring to a boil. Partly cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Strain and set aside. 3. To make a Cajun roux, heat the oil in a heavy-bottomed skillet. When the oil is hot, add the flour, a little at

a time, and blend to a smooth paste. 4. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly for 25 to 40 minutes until the roux reaches the color of peanut butter. Remove the pan from the heat and continue stirring until the roux cools and stops cooking. 5. Melt the margarine or butter in a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan or flameproof casserole. Finely chop the remaining onions and add to the pan with the peppers and celery. Cook over medium-low heat for 6 to 8 minutes, until the onions are soft, stirring occasionally. 6. Add the sausage, stir well, and cook for 5 minutes longer. Add the okra and garlic, stir, and cook until the okra stops producing white “threads.” 7. Add the remaining bay leaves, the thyme, salt, black and white peppers, cayenne pepper, and hotpepper sauce to-taste, if using. Stir well then stir in 1 1/2 quarts of the shrimp stock and the plum tomatoes. Bring to a boil, partly cover the pan, lower the heat, and simmer for about 20 minutes. 8. Whisk in the Cajun roux. Raise the heat and bring to a boil, whisking well. Lower the heat again and simmer, uncovered, for 40 to 45 minutes longer, stirring occasionally. 9. Stir in the shrimp and crabmeat. Cook for at least 3 to 4 minutes or until the shrimp turn pink. To serve, put a mound of hot, boiled rice in each serving bowl and ladle the gumbo over, making sure each person gets some prawns and some crabmeat. Serve with crusty bread for dunking. Serves 10 to 12. March 2014

One of the fundamental principles of our criminal justice system is that one person should never be punished for the misdeeds of another. As Brian Strong a result, if an 18-yearold gets drunk and smashes several car windows with a baseball bat, his parents can never be sentenced to jail for the criminal damage caused by their adult son. And yet, as an Arizona criminal defense attorney, I have learned that many people are more troubled by the money they may have to pay than the time they could spend behind bars. In the criminal courts, there are many costs a defendant could be ordered to pay. Fines, monthly probation fees, lab costs (for drug testing) and victim restitution are some of the more common financial assessments. Fines, like jail time, are considered pure punishment. Probation and lab fees, however, are imposed under the theory that the criminal courts should be at least partially funded by the offenders. Victim restitution, however, gets imposed for an entirely different reason. The purpose of restitution is neither punishment nor user pay. The purpose of restitution is to make the victim(s) whole. This key legal distinction is why, in Arizona and several other states, parents of juvenile offenders can be court ordered to pay for the damage done by their wayward teen. Obviously that distinction never makes the parents happy. Whenever a juvenile court judge orders mom and dad to pay a $3,000 repair bill, they always feel like they are being

Nearby News • For News Around Our Neighborhood

punished for the conduct of their foolish child. The Arizona statute that makes parents financially responsible for their underage kids is A.R.S. § 12661. Parents are deemed liable even in cases where they could not possibly have anticipated their child’s delinquent act. Parental liability is not limited to property damage alone. Theft (e.g., shoplifting) and physical injuries (medical bills) are also listed as mandating parental payment. In spite of that, however, the statute does contain some important limitations: • The child’s misconduct must be “malicious or willful,” not merely accidental. • There is a $10,000 cap for “each act.” • Liability is limited to the “parents or legal guardian having custody or control of the minor” when the event happened. Thus, if mom has sole legal custody and dad simply has visitation rights, dad cannot be held financially liable for misconduct that occurred while the child was in mom’s care. If your teenage son or daughter is ever arrested the possibility of detention time or probation terms are not the only reasons to hire an attorney. Rather than hire an attorney just for your teen, you might be better off hiring an attorney to represent your financial interests in a contested restitution hearing. Brian Strong is a criminal defense attorney with Rowley Chapman and Barney Ltd. For more information, call (480) 833-2341 or visit www. azlegal.com. March 2014

Get the ‘Wright’ Smile with Orthodontics for Children and Adults Often the first thing you notice about someone is their smile. With the advancements in orthodontics, anyone can achieve a lovely and perfect smile, with a variety of techniques that match an individual’s own unique needs and lifestyle. Dr. Jack Wright has been making the Valley smile since 2005. With so many effective choices in braces, there is a solution for children, teens and adults. “We use traditional metal braces, clear braces and something called self-ligating brackets (offering reduced friction), Invisalign and Invisalign Teen,” Wright said. Invisalign has emerged as an incredibly popular treatment in straightening teeth in the past decade. It uses a series of clear, removable and on the town

comfortable teeth aligners that are virtually invisible. An added benefit is that brushing and flossing are not a challenge. After a series of aligners, the teeth move gradually. Invisalign is a great choice for some patients’ needs. “Come in for a consultation and I will help you determine if Invisalign is the best option for your orthodontic needs,” Wright suggested. Wright Orthodontics features another state-of-the-art advancement. “You’ll never have to experience an uncomfortable dental impression in our office. Our new Itero scanner eliminates that hassle,” Wright explained. “It’s a valuable piece of equipment because it captures a sharper image of your teeth than what has been previously available, without any mess.” events calendar

Dr. Wright and staff of Wright Orthodontics welcome you to the “Wright” smile.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist around the age of 8, because some orthodontic issues are best treated with early intervention. On the other end of the spectrum, Wright explained that you’re never too old to consider a teeth-straightening treatment. “The age of patients has definitely changed. We are beginning to see more adults seeking treatment than ever before,” Wright explained.

“We accept most insurance policies and we also provide 0 percent financing,” Wright noted. “Our staff is highly qualified and we treat our patients like family.” Wright Orthodontics has offices at 1118 N. Val Vista Dr., and 453 W. Fifth St., Mesa, with additional locations in Chandler, Litchfield Park and Peoria. Visit www.wrightortho.com or call (480) 969-1514 for additional information.

Why Become a Times Media Group Advertiser? “You can have everything you want in life, if you will just help enough other people get what they want. ”—Zig Ziglar Seventeen years ago a guy with a dream—and not much else—walked out of the comforts of his job as an accountant to go and start a community publication in North Scottsdale. Having no sales or publishing experience whatsoever, he believed then, as he does now, that life is simply too short to spend it doing something uninspiring. Slowly, the fledgling enterprise began to pull its little head above water, owed mostly to luck, great people and flat out tenacity. Today, this fledgling enterprise has grown into Times Media Group, its print and digital products serving audiences all over Arizona, the publication you hold in your hands is one of them. At TMG, we continue to adhere strictly to the true life principles that have guided us thus far. So, here’s the skinny: You can choose to advertise wherever you like, heck we try lots of things too! But whatever you do, make sure to at least see if Times Media Group can help your business. If you like good ideas, straight-talk and measurable results, we’ve been waiting for your call.
