Campo Verde High School head football coach Max Ragsdale pushes his players to be more than just outstanding athletes, and for that, he was awarded with the 2013 U.S. Marine Corps Semper Fi Coach Award. The U.S. Marine Corps and Glazier Football Clinics annually present the award to 41 high school football coaches across the nation who exemplify the Marine Corps motto of Semper Fidelis—always faithful— and who model the leadership values of honor, courage and commitment, according to Marine Corps Phoenix Recruiting Station representative Sgt. Tyler J. Bolken. Ragsdale was surprised when he was notified of the award. He admitted that the recognition was a little out of his comfort zone, but he was proud because it represents what CVHS football is all about. “This award is about what we do,” Ragdale said. “Winning games and winning titles is all fine and dandy, but at the end of the day, becoming better husbands, better fathers and better men is what we are after.” Ragsdale, who played football at Apache Junction High School and Mesa Community College, knew he wanted to be a football coach because of the positive influence his teachers and coaches had on him. He learned that life is about loving what you do and he preaches that to his players and students. “I tell my students that it’s not about making money, it’s about loving what you do,” Ragsdale said. Ragsdale began his coaching career as an undergraduate student at Arizona State University as a football assistant and then as a graduate student. He was a recruiting coordinator until 1998. He has been coaching at the high school level for more than 15 years, including stints at Apache Junction and Mesquite high schools. Ragsdale was named the first classifieds

head football coach at CVHS in 2009. Starting a new football program can be challenging, but Ragsdale has been able to create a winning and family atmosphere at Campo Verde. “You just have to set expectations and the kids will meet it,” Ragsdale said. In Campo Verde’s short history, Ragsdale has led the team to a 22-12 record and a playoff berth in each of its three varsity football seasons. Faith, Family and Football are the three words on the back of the Coyote football T-shirts and is an important part of Ragsdale’s message. “When those three things are coupled by hard work, good things are going to happen. No matter what program I’m with, those three words will be on the back of our shirts,” Ragsdale said. “Always remember that faith, family and whatever you are doing for that third item are what is important.” April 2014

According to The Echo’s Nest, which collects and analyzes data from Internet music platforms, Arizona’s favorite local band is Linkin Park. The band, whose lead singer, Chester Bennington, lives in Gilbert, is considered “local” by the poll’s criteria, although Bennington splits his time between Gilbert and Los Angeles. Said hardcore local music fans: “Booooooooooooooooooooo!” Nearby News freelancer Lynette Carrington recently took on PR and publicity duties for the short film, “Behind Glass Walls.” The film takes a look at the walls we build around us and how they prevent us from finding that which we really need. The romance/comedy/drama will shoot in Los Angeles this summer. It was written by R. Dana Browne, will be directed and produced by Samantha Siong and stars Browne and award-winning Hollywood veteran actor Christopher Atkins (“The Blue Lagoon,” “Dallas”). After we went to press, the Town of Gilbert was to decide if it would fund a $19 million BMX national headquarters, Olympic training track and public park. A 4,000-seat covered arena would host national events at least twice a year and could someday become the home of Olympic qualifying races, USA BMX officials told Gilbert residents at a community meeting. USA BMX is the governing body of a growing sport that earned recognition as an Olympic event at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The organization boasts 70,000 members worldwide, including 5,000 in Arizona and 260 in Gilbert. Longtime Gilbert resident Ruth Gieszl died Feb. 10 at age 90. Dentist Seeks to Raise Funds During Smiles for Life Campaign Help improve a child’s life by having your teeth whitened. Sound crazy? That’s because it is. The 16th annual nationwide Smiles for Life Campaign runs through June. Locally, one hundred percent of proceeds from teeth-whitening procedures done by Dr. Kathy Jacobsen at Contemporary Dentistry are donated to worthy children’s charities, locally and worldwide. As an additional incentive, each toothwhitening patient enjoys his or her smile brightening procedure at a discounted rate. Patients love the unique opportunity to improve the lives of children in need while also enhancing their own smile. Since its creation, Crown Council’s nationwide Smile For Life Campaign has raised more than $33 million for seriously ill, disabled and disadvantaged kids. Donations from last year alone totaled $1.5 million. Smiles For Life hopes to break the $35 million mark for total collections during this year’s drive. “Smiles For Life allows a person
to help children in need by doing something that benefits them as well,” explains Greg Anderson, director of the Crown Council. “Dr. Kathy Jacobsen and her team donate their time and expertise, while Ultradent generously provides all Opalescence whitening products. You will receive a brighter smile, and, best of all, provide children with a brighter future.” Jacobsen offers gift certificates for teeth whitening, making it easier than ever to give the gift of a new smile to friends and loved ones, while also giving hope to children in need. Half of the donations raised by Contemporary Dentistry are given to Gilbert National Little League, a local children’s charity, with the balance going to the Smiles for Life Foundation for distribution among approved charities throughout the world. The instructors possess respect and understanding for children and a deep passion for the natural world. They are well trained in interpretive techniques, group management and activity facilitation.* Camp Zoo Wild Hearts Camp was developed for children with orthopedic impairments to experience the zoo. As a mom with three kids, who all have different allergies and sensitivities, I truly appreciate that. Yes, it does take more time to make your own laundry detergent than just picking it from the store, but you can make enough to last you a while and the savings are quite nice. photo page

melts. Once all the soap is dissolved, add the 2 gallons of hot water into a large bucket along with your dissolved soap and stir well. Then add your baking soda and stir until dissolved. You will probably need to stir it again before you use it because it can get lumpy, but this is normal. To store, use old cleaned out liquid laundry containers, milk jugs or other closed container. Use half a cup on regular loads and a full cup on heavily soiled loads. This recipe made enough to fill two store-bought containers (4.68 quarts) and it costs less than $2. That is a nice savings that I’m happy to bring to my family—now, aren’t you ready to give it a try?
EAST VALLEY MOMS
navigating parenthood By Eva Dwight, B.A. MaEd. mom section
Facing Discouragement with Courage Of the four mistaken goals of misbehavior, the toughest one to deal with—I think—is “assumed inadequacy,” otherwise known as “giving up.” When Eva Dwight children believe they can’t be successful, and won’t even bother to try, they often mask their feelings of inadequacy with stubbornness, inattention, anger or an “I don’t care” attitude. That makes parents want to throw up their hands and give up. The children hope their parents will do just that. However, if parents can look at their child’s behavior through the lens of discouragement, and instead of giving up, find ways to encourage—or give courage to—their child, little by little, pasta vixen

they can help their child find a way to move forward. When my younger son started first grade, he refused to write the required three sentences a day in his “journal.” Flat out refused. We went ‘round and ‘round nightly, forcing him to stay at the table until he’d written his sentences, and when he was done, we were so mad at each other, we were miserable! I finally figured out that he wasn’t being stubborn. He was discouraged because he could tell me a whole story in the time it took him to write three sentences! His fingers couldn’t make the letters fast enough to keep up with his brain. When I offered to lightly write the words he dictated to me, he agreed to trace over my letters. He was able to do that successfully. Gradually, his fine motor
Arizona Gives Day Rallies Nonprofit Support
By Beth Lucas A Mesa man was able to live his final wish, as more than 30 family members came together at the Mesa Arts Center to watch his favorite music group, “America’s Got Talent” veterans, The Duttons. Ira Lavender’s memories and final wish were granted thanks to donations to Bucket List Foundation, a new Arizona nonprofit that provides wishes to seniors facing terminal illnesses, said founder and president Kimberly Iverson. The local group is among more than 800 diverse nonprofits that serve Arizona residents and who will rally for donations on the second annual Arizona Gives Day, on Wednesday, April 9. The Gilbert Education Foundation is striving to increase scholarships to high school seniors and educators, as the group also plans new classroom grants. Local business Bushtex Inc. is offering to match donations up to $5,000. Page 20
“Education affects everyone in our community,” said Leanne McEachran, Gilbert Education Foundation executive director. “It touches so many lives.” Arizona nonprofits rely on individual contributions for about 80 percent of their average revenue, organizers explain, and the day-long effort is aimed at shoring up fundraising that has fallen in recent years. It’s also a way for nonprofits to generate awareness of their work. “Our goal this year is to engage the community even more widely than we did last year,” said Patrick McWhortor, president and CEO of the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits, which launched the effort with Arizona Grantmakers Forum. Last year, more than 8,500 donors raised $1 million, he said. Donations can be scheduled in advance. Nonprofits will also compete for a variety of awards based on how many donors they attract, and the
skills developed so that he could write short assignments independently. But any time he had to write a longer report or story, he dictated, I typed without using punctuation or fixing my spelling typos, and then he went back and edited. It was his writing. I just provided the bridge between his body and his brain. And that’s how we got through elementary school. It took time to figure out the core issue—several weeks, in fact, because I’m a little slow sometimes. I was able to offer baby steps that my son felt capable of mastering, which allowed him to develop the courage to tackle more challenging writing tasks as time passed. Other ways to encourage children who are stuck in “assumed inadequacy” include: • Stop all criticism. Notice every movement toward the goal and thank her for taking that step. • Model the self-talk you use to get yourself unstuck, and ask your child to repeat what you said but change the context to fit his situation. dollar amount, all funded by sponsor First Bank. “Last year, 80 percent of the nonprofits who participated got new donors,” said Bryce Lloyd, Phoenix market president for First Bank, and board member of the Scottsdale Boys and Girls Club. “When we do well for our community, we do well for our businesses as well.” Donors and nonprofits can watch a live leader board on the website, http://azgives.razoo.com/giving_events/ az14/home, as they compete for prizes and launch their own social media campaigns for donations. “You can search for an organization that may be working on an issue you care about, or find an organization through a ZIP code search within your area,” McWhortor said. “In general over the past six years, nonprofits have been battered by the recession,” he added. Marissa Theisen is president and CEO of the grantmakers forum, and said that in Arizona, philanthropic assets made available, such as through grants, are lower than other states.

Mesa resident Ira Lavender, a lifelong musician, was granted a final wish by Bucket List Foundation, one of more than 800 nonprofits taking part in Arizona Gives Day on April 9.
“We really need to build the individual contribution pool,” she said. Nonprofits are also gaining technical training and support, as part of Arizona Gives Day, she added. “The work nonprofits are doing really makes Arizona a great place to live,” McWhortor said. “No matter where you are, you are benefiting from the work of a nonprofit. What’s Cooking? By Jan D’Atri
Kit Cooking We’ve seen so many of them on store shelves for years. Packages and kits that make a meal or dessert, and all you do is add water or just a few ingredients. I’ve passed them up thousands of times, but this shopping trip was different. From chili kits to Kung Pao chicken sauces to signature marinades from famous chefs, I bought, cooked and ate my way through dozens of boxes and packets of “convenience foods” all designed to make our lives easier. I whipped and spread and stirred my way through dessert after dessert, asking the same question, “They may be convenient, but were they delicious?” Actually, many of them were. In fact, some tasted as scrumptious as homemade and that was a huge surprise to me. In my opinion, what topped the list for the best-tasting? It was in the dessert category and I found it at Fresh and Easy Neighborhood Market. The Fresh and Easy Chocolate Frosting Mix is as tasty as any homemade version and all you do is add a little butter (I used unsalted) and water. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to perfect chocolate frosting—adding espresso, imported cocoa powder and a pinch of exotic salt from Sicily. Truthfully, the next time I have to ice a chocolate cake, I’ll be heading to Fresh and Easy, where the package promises that it’s ready in minutes. Here’s a list of some of my favorites for convenience and flavor: Kit Cooking—Entrees: 1. 3. Zatarain’s Crawfish, Shrimp and Crab Boil (Safeway) Just add: Water, seafood, lemon and salt Done in 15-20 minutes

Stuffed Naan ($8.99), which was seasoned beef with grilled vegetables and creamy house sauce. It was huge and smelled as good as it tasted! For our main dish we ordered the beef tikka kabob ($10.95) and chicken breast kabob ($9.95). All kabobs are marinated in Rania’s signature seasonings for at least 72 hours and then cooked over an open flame. The platters come with a choice of four types of rice. Our kabobs were grilled perfectly and were very tender and moist. As we were enjoying our amazing food, we were pleased to meet Wally Ansari, the general manager. He has worked in several other restaurants and he is now very happy to work with his parents Hadi and Shookria, who were born in Kabul. He let us know about the various grills in the kitchen as well as the weekly specials, vegetarian options and full catering. By the way, Rania is Wally’s niece. DECA students worked the control boards and managed a past G-Stock Music Festival.
Event Teaches Students the Business of Festivals By Lynette Carrington
Students studying marketing at Gilbert High School are learning the ins and outs of presenting a music festival with G-Stock on Saturday, April 26. Gilbert High School’s DECA group is responsible for the full range of event services from sponsorships, promotions and ticket sales to booking bands, working backstage and marketing. The student organization is part of an international club that learns valuable skills in a hands-on manner. “DECA is the student marketing organization; the marketing classes go along with the club,” said Steven Mulhearn, the Gilbert High School DECA adviser and marketing teacher. “The advanced marketing class kids run this concert every year.” First-year marketing students learn the basics as well as economics. The following year, pupils take what they’ve learned and put it to good use with the G-Stock Music Festival. “This is not a simulation,” Mulhearn said. “This is the real deal. They will pick the acts, they audition acts as well as go out to events and find good acts.” The event will move from the auditorium where it had been held previously, to outdoors on the school’s campus. Mulhearn described the event as a “mini Lollapalooza,” with food trucks, music and arts and crafts displays. The planning and logistics have been considerable and have inspired some students to pursue specific careers based on their experiences with DECA. A senior, Kiara Perez, has been involved all through high school and

is serving as the G-Stock executive producer. “I delegate tasks...there’s a PR group and another group that contacts media places and radio stations as well as creating posters for auditions and making banners for the show,” Perez said. “Everyone does a really great job because they’re excited about the event.” She also plans to go to college after graduation and will major in business. “What I really want to do is work in the music industry, so the G-Stock is really great experience. The G-Stock Music Festival will have two stages of continual entertainment with performances by Never Let This, Jasper Drive, The Goodnight, The Tragic Thrills, Kenny Holland and Shae Brock on two stages. G-Stock has repeatedly been popular, but this year, it is expecting upward of 600 attendees. Tickets are $7 in advance or $10 at the door. Tickets will be available through www. ticketfly.com. Gilbert High School is located at 1105 E. Elliot Rd. Be Careful with the Things You Say, Children Will Listen My wife recently gave birth to our first child. Words cannot describe what it was like to first see him, hold him and care Joshua R. Boyle for him. Do you remember seeing your first child for the first time? Did you think about how much you wanted to protect that defenseless baby? How much you wanted to do things right? I have so much to learn as a parent, but if I may offer one parenting tip I have learned from my family law practice it is this: Please, don’t let your children hear you say one bad thing about their other parent. Whether you are married to him or her, whether the words are true or not, it does not matter. Your children know they are a part of each of you, so when your children hear their mom say “Your dad is a jerk!” or hear their dad say that “Your mom is stupid!” then they are hearing that part of them is a jerk or part of them is stupid. Regardless of the words you use to put the other parent down (and those words are probably worse than “jerk” or “stupid”), you are directing those words at your children’s hearts and you will crush them. Your children are listening. Sadly, what I have just discussed is a part of far too many of my cases involving children. Parents, who are April 2014
supposed to be the “grownups,” often think the children should know how horrible the other parent is. It is an extremely immature thing to think that your children cannot love you just as much if they also love the other parent. It is even more ridiculous to think that your children need to know how you really feel about the other parent. Let’s be honest, it’s not about your children at that point; it’s about selfish old you. Love your children. Put them first. Don’t let them hear one awful thing from you about their other parent. Here’s my advice to my clients: Don’t run the risk of small ears eavesdropping by not saying a single disparaging word when the children are in your care. Tell your friends and family the same thing. And do not tolerate any disparaging words from anyone about the other parent on any blogs, Twitter accounts or Facebook pages. Remember your love for your children, put them first, and protect their sweet little hearts.

Why Become a Times Media Group Advertiser? “You can have everything you want in life, if you will just help enough other people get what they want. ”—Zig Ziglar Seventeen years ago a guy with a dream—and not much else—walked out of the comforts of his job as an accountant to go and start a community publication in North Scottsdale. Having no sales or publishing experience whatsoever, he believed then, as he does now, that life is simply too short to spend it doing something uninspiring. Slowly, the fledgling enterprise began to pull its little head above water, owed mostly to luck, great people and flat out tenacity. Today, this fledgling enterprise has grown into Times Media Group, its print and digital products serving audiences all over Arizona, the publication you hold in your hands is one of them. At TMG, we continue to adhere strictly to the true life principles that have guided us thus far. So, here’s the skinny: You can choose to advertise wherever you like, heck we try lots of things too! But whatever you do, make sure to at least see if Times Media Group can help your business. If you like good ideas, straight-talk and measurable results, we’ve been waiting for your call.
