STUDENT LIFE
11 THINGS
YOU’LL NEED FOR CLASS
‘T
is the season for college shopping, and students everywhere are hustling to get ready for the new school year. Between dorm room shopping and trying to end the summer with a bang, most students forget the reason they’re going to college in the first place — to go to class. Shopping for school supplies should be a priority when preparing for school, after all students go to college to learn, right? Nothing can help make learning easier than being prepared for class. That said, here’s a list of 11 things a typical college student will need for any class.
#1 • BACKPACK (OR MURSE)
All those supplies have to go somewhere, right? Two hands won’t be enough to carry that mass collection of school work and other miscellaneous items gathered throughout the day. A backpack is a must — unless you want to be that guy asking for a piece of paper and a pencil from your neighbor.
#2 • WATCH (TO COUNT THE MINUTES UNTIL CLASS ENDS)
Time management is the key to success. The most basic way to keep up with time is to simply know the time. Managing time without a watch or phone is near impossible otherwise.
#3 • CHARGING CABLE (WHEN YOU LIVE TWEETED TOO MUCH)
Nowadays, most classes involve the use of electronic devices — phones, tablets or laptops. With this in mind, it’s smart to carry a charging cable. Devices are great for class but have a stunning reputation for dying on days their needed the most. Don’t live in fear of restarting an electronic test or losing a day’s worth of notes. Bring a charger.
#4 • A LOT OF PENS AND PENCILS (THE FANCY COLORED ONES)
Pens and pencils always seem to find their way to the magical black hole. Be sure to bring many pens and pencils.
#5 • NOTEBOOKS (TO USE YOUR FANCY COLORED PENS)
Everyone has their note-taking preferences. The big question is choosing between taking notes in a notebook or laptop. Notebooks are not just for class notes. They can be used for doodling, crafts, projects or brainstorming.
#6 • CALENDAR (TO SEE WHEN YOU SHOULD'VE STARTED THAT ESSAY)
A calendar is a college student’s best friend. With so many events, deadlines and hangouts to schedule, a calendar is key to making sure nothing or no
one gets forgotten or accidentally blown off. No matter how good anyone’s memory may be, without a calendar keeping up with the current week’s shenanigans will be difficult.
#7 • STAPLER (TO HOLD YOUR LIFE TOGETHER)
Mini staplers can come in handy. Filing to the front of the room to staple papers right before class isn’t very popular in college. Having a stapler ready is highly recommended and can mean all the difference when it comes to keeping papers organized.
#8 • LAPTOP (THE WEIGHT OF A TINY ELEPHANT)
Investing in a laptop is a smart move. They can store textbooks, notes and papers making things effortless to find and carry. They are great for checking grades and emails, and you can watch videos to keep up with classes.
#9 • LIQUID COURAGE (CAFFEINE)
Whatever your choice of caffeine, be it coffee, tea or an extralarge Red Bull, lectures are important and falling asleep in class is not an option. Get caffeinated to stay awake and alert. Don’t risk falling behind in class due to lack of sleep.
#10 • TEXTBOOKS (ONLY $5,000 EACH)
Learning is tough without access to the information, so make sure to order textbooks sooner rather than later. After all, professors don’t require them for nothing. Books are expensive, but there’s always the option to sell them after class. So, whether online or in physical form, a textbook is the one school item that should never be skipped.
#11 • FOLDERS (PLEASE ORGANIZE YOUR LIFE)
One of the most underrated school supplies is the folder. Without a folder, plan on losing every handout, syllabus or informational packet the professors hand out. Otherwise, have fun trying to keep track of personal homework assignments and straightening the crushed papers you stuffed in your backpack. CT

handler High School alum and ASU cornerback Chase Lucas has always been passionate about his family. They have been a tight-knit bunch for as long as he can remember, constantly supporting one another in each of their endeavors. His grandparents, Rosalind and Charles, were heavily involved in Chandler football program when he played for the Wolves. Lucas and his grandfather still go fishing together on a regular basis, an activity they started when he was young. “My family is everything to me,” Lucas says. “My mom, grandparents, my aunt, they all did everything for me.” Lucas has both of his grandparents’ names tattooed on his left arm. His mother’s name, Valerie, is on his left bicep. To him, it’s a way to show how deeply he cares for them and to keep them close by whether he’s at home or on a road trip with the Sun Devil football program. He has plans to add his aunt’s name, Tara, on his ribs. But that tattoo will differ from the rest. It will be in honor of her legacy after her life was cut short. “My aunt, she came to every game. So, when people heard it through the grapevine it was really sad,” Lucas says. “I feel like now I really have a purpose to get right and do something amazing for my family.” Tara Rose Lucas passed away February 2 after she was involved in a car accident in Scottsdale. She was 44 years old. Lucas says the crash happened close to 6 miles from his home. That made
the loss even more difficult to fathom. “I felt like I could’ve done something,” Lucas says. “But I knew God wanted her at that point, so I couldn’t be too mad. I just want to celebrate her life and live through her.” Growing up in a single-parent household, Tara became a second parent to Lucas. ncoming ASU freshman Rube Woolsey is a three-time rodeo champion who has competed around the nation. Recently, the amateur rodeo star moved from his Casa Grande ranch to ASU’s Hassayampa Academic Village so he could study business. “I’m excited and definitely a little bit nervous, too,” he says. “I’ve always lived in a very rural area so this will be a bit different for me.” Business was a natural choice for Woolsey, who cites the subject as a passion of his. “I’ve always loved making business deals,” he says. Before he entered ASU, Woolsey followed in his family’s rodeo footsteps. He spent 10 months of the year participating in Jackpots, or mini rodeos. “My dad taught me how to rope,” he says. “My first rodeo was when I was either 5 or 6.” Woolsey participates in team roping, a timed event with two riders (the header and the heeler) and a steer. The header ropes the front of the steer, while the heeler ropes the steer’s hind feet. When the steer has been successfully roped, the timer stops. Woolsey is a header. “It’s the header’s job to set up properly so the heeler can finish the job,” he says. Without the proper setup, the event could be unsuccessful. Woolsey loves the thrill of the rodeo, especially “the competitiveness, just going out there and putting your skills to the test.” He dedicates a good chunk of his time to rodeo. “I ride every day and rope about three times a week,” says Woolsey, who still finds time for weightlifting, golfing, his friends and his dog, Grizz. Despite all the work he puts in, he always has time for school, but sometimes not teenage rites of passage. “I never really struggled with it,” Woolsey says of school. “I always tried to get work done in school or while at school. There were a lot of events in high school that I missed out on, but for me, it was worth it because I was doing what I love.” Woolsey plans to balance ASU and rodeos so he can hit the local circuit. He wants to push toward his goal of going professional, and persuading ASU students to check out the events. “Everyone should try to make it to a local rodeo, if they have one,” he says. “It’s a really beautiful sport and everyone should be exposed to it at least one time.” CT

NEWLY ACQUIRED MIKE LEAKE GOES BACK TO WHERE IT ALL BEGAN GRIFFIN FABITS • COLLEGE TIMES
O
n the eve of Major League Baseball’s trade deadline, Mike Leake busied himself by packing for Houston. There were rumors surrounding the Seattle Mariners’ right-handed pitcher, who was likely to be dealt by the 4 p.m. deadline on July 31. But Leake was a Mariner until told otherwise, and that meant readying for an upcoming three-game series versus the Astros. Several clubs were rumored to be in on the 31-year-old, ASU product, who flashed signs of brilliance in 22 starts with the Mariners this year. The Arizona Diamondbacks did not appear to be one of those clubs. That was, until, D-backs’ general manager Mike Hazen swooped in to acquire Leake in a buzzer-beater deal completed just moments before the clock struck 4. The full trade, announced several minutes after the deadline, saw the Diamondbacks receive Leake and cash considerations for prospect Jose Caballero. “(The deadline) was definitely a little bit of anxiety waiting around and thinking,” he said, before an August 15 game versus the San Francisco Giants. In two starts with the Diamondbacks, as of August 15, Leake yielded 10 earned runs in 10.1 innings pitched. With the Mariners, he went 9-8 with a 4.27 ERA. He lifted his trade stock in July, throwing to the tune of a 3.00 ERA, including his complete game, one-hit shutout against the Angels on July 19. More than a decade ago, Leake was a freshman at ASU, just a few
miles from his current Chase Field office, with big-league aspirations. He had been a four-year standout at California’s Fallbrook High School, a two-way player with tons of power and a rocket arm to boot before committing to the Sun Devils. In Tempe, his reputation soared to one of the most decorated players in the nation. He pitched 127 innings as a true freshman, sporting a 3.69 ERA and striking out 94. By the time his junior year rolled around, Leake was a strong candidate to be selected in the first round of the 2009 MLB draft in June. He solidified his first-round stock when he posted a 1.71 ERA his junior year, holding batters to a pedestrian .193 average, and earning National Player of the Year honors by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Leake was selected by the Cincinnati Reds with the eighth overall pick in the 2009 draft after his illustrious season. A decade later, the San Diego native is toeing the rubber for the Diamondbacks. Suddenly inserted into the chase for a postseason berth is a luxury that had been lost on Leake in previous seasons. “Last year and a couple years before, I wasn’t really in (the postseason hunt), so it’s a treat to be back in. It’s definitely different than being on a sub-.500 team, but it’s definitely nice.” The Mariners were 47-63 at the time of Leake’s trade. He hasn’t pitched in the postseason since 2012. There are struggles pitchers encounter upon being dealt midseason. Here is Leake now, thrust into a new locker room, pitching for
a different organization that houses different philosophies and tendencies, with a six-week stretch of the biggest baseball to be played. “The challenges intertwine along with soaking all the information in,” Leake said. “It’s obviously going to be a little different than other places or what you’re used to. You continue to take the information, such as the signs, and try and catch on as quickly as you can. But then again, the philosophies are still give and take.” “It’s just another teacher you’re learning from.” It was Hazen who ultimately brought Leake back to Arizona for a second stint, but regarding his first, when he joined the Sun Devils in 2006, it was the standard of ASU baseball that reeled him in. “The family atmosphere that (then-head coach Pat) Murphy was creating, along with the university. I Mike Leake didn’t expect to be traded to the Arizona mean, even though it’s big and Diamondbacks this year. somewhat of a commuter feel, it still feels like a university that’s consecutive conference titles and two together. I think that’s unique and trips to the College World Series. I think the comradery that players “It was kind of a treat to blend in before — and the history of it — as well with that environment, a bunch of bashers, and still mix in.” Playfully reminded that, he, too, was a “basher” — Leake launched the only two home runs of his ASU career in 2008 — he smiled, shrugged and said, “Yeah, I hit a couple.” “But just to feel like I was contributing was the ultimate feeling with a team that was known for the last few years and more.” After spending five-and-a-half seasons with the Reds, Leake had a short-stint with the Giants, before playing with the St. Louis Cardinals and Mariners. In Arizona, on the mound at Chase Field, Leake feels at home, a sort of comfort that’s reminiscent to his college days in Tempe. And, fans, too, should treasure the acquisition Mike Leake, left, and Merrill Kelly — now Arizona Diamondbacks teammates — show off their Sun Devil pride. of Leake if he’s able to replicate the success he had with the Sun Devils, as what Murph was continuing, was perhaps becoming a driving force to PHOTOS • SARAH SACHS/ what drew me in.” getting his new club to the postseason. ox Sports Arizona broadcaster Todd Walsh says coming up with his list of “top songs” is an impossible task. When he does, it’s never the same as a previous one. Three bands are constant, though, and any viewer of Diamondbacks or Coyotes games will know this: U2, Pearl Jam and The Tragically Hip. He has spent most of his “vacation” time and money chasing them around North America during the last three decades. “Some people go to the beach,” he says. “Others go camping. I go to concerts. The hardest part of making that happen is dealing with the summer baseball schedule and the winter hockey schedule. However, where there is a will, there is a way. Luckily, Las Vegas, San Diego and Los Angeles are usually a part of every west coast tour leg.”
the live version from the “Wide Awake in America” EP. U2 will always have a spot in the top six. On any given day I could choose from scores of U2 songs, but this was my first favorite. It hit me as I was in my early college years at the U of A and still going back home to Rochester, New York, to visit family and friends. It was a hard time in that I knew I would never go back to live there, as I was starting a new life in the desert. I used to play it on my Walkman as the plane would land in New York. It’s funny, after a few years, I started to play it as the plane was landing in Arizona. The official video stands the test of time for any old-school U2 fan. https://youtu.be/ Jln5IzGEwYg

I was late to the Pearl Jam party but more than made up for lost time. I love the message, the tone and tenor and I love how Eddie Vedder feels every single note and lyric. MTV Unplugged included one of the all-time great versions: https://youtu. be/llOpE85bmW0 “Train Overnight” The Tragically Hip Same story with U2. I could, and often do, pick any number of songs from The Hip. I found it to be a dreamy and traveling kind of tune that I listen to when I’m in the middle of a long Coyotes road trip and just wondering where I am and what day of the week it is. I’ve been in love with this band from the early ’80s and can remember when “When the Walls Came Down” was actually in rotation on MTV. I have to be careful how much and how often I dive into this song because it is so raw and so powerful in what it conjures up. https://youtu.be/l3HhGtxCJmY “Games Without Frontiers” Peter Gabriel When I began my career in radio, the PM Drive DJ at our FM station said once, in introducing this song, “Here now the creative genius of Peter Gabriel.” He couldn’t have been more accurate. I just as easily could have said “Solsbury Hill.” Or “Follow You, Follow Me,” or “Sky Blue” or “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.” If Peter Gabriel heads back out on tour, he should be a “bucket lister.” I can’t pick one. “In Your Eyes?” I have to stop. https://youtu.be/pzE8TjlldaY “Love to Burn” Neil Young Desert Sky Pavilion.
