Formerly partnered with PlayStation, the Fiesta Bowl is sponsored by Vrbo and hosting one of the semifinal matchups in the College Football Playoffs. The undefeated No. 2 seed, Michigan, will square off against TCU, the shocking No. 3 seed.

“The Fiesta Bowl organization has been a national staple in college football since 1971,” says Jose Moreno, Fiesta Bowl chief marketing officer.

“With the addition of a powerhouse brand like Vrbo, we look for-

Vrbo Fiesta Bowl

ward to an unforgettable New Year’s celebration with the CFP Semifinal at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl.”

The Fiesta Bowl has a rich history of quality matchups. The 1987 Fiesta Bowl game saw a meeting between Penn State and Miami that would be named “Game of the Century.”

Other legendary matchups include Ohio State versus Miami in 2003, and Ohio State and Boise State in 2007. Both games are among the best college football games.

2022 marks the third time the Fiesta Bowl has hosted a College Football Playoffs matchup. This year’s matchup has all the makings of a

great game.

On one side stands the best of the Big Ten. The University of Michigan Wolverines have been on a warpath this season and have their sights set on winning the national championship. The Wolverines finished the season with a record of 13-0, including a blowout win over rivals Ohio State and a Big Ten Championship win over Purdue.

Standing in their way is the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs. TCU comes into the game with a record of 12-1. Their lone loss came in the Big 12 Championship Game against Kansas State 31-28.

The University of Michigan Wolverines

The University of Michigan Wolverines are back in the College Football Playoffs and look to make a run at the national championship.

2022 was the best year in recent program history. The team finished with a 13-0 record, including a win over archrival Ohio State 45-23.

The Wolverines head into this game fresh off a Big Ten Championship win over Purdue and now look ready to take on the TCU Horned Frogs with a spot in the national championship game on the line.

The Wolverines have had a potent offensive attack all season behind the likes of J.J. McCarthy and star running back Blake Corum.

The rushing attack has been the key to unlocking this offensive juggernaut. Led by Corum, the unit ranked among the best in college football. Corum alone racked up 1,463 yards and 18 touchdowns on the year and was widely considered to be one of the best backs in the country.

Unfortunately for the Wolverines, Corum picked up a season ending

injury.

However, the potent Wolverine rushing attack does not look like it will skip a beat. Sophomore running back Donovan Edwards looks to be a star for Michigan. Edwards was dominant in the last two games of the season in wins over Ohio State and Purdue. Edwards torched the Ohio State defense for 216 yards rushing and two touchdowns. He would follow that up with another stellar performance in the Big Ten Championship game against Purdue, finishing with 185 rushing yards and a touchdown.

McCarthy’s performance has been vital to the Wolverines as well, the sophomore put up 2,376 yards and 20 touchdowns, with only three interceptions.

The defense is no slouch of a group, either. A group that was rattled by the 2022 NFL Draft, losing many of their top performers, like No. 2 overall pick Aidan Hutchinson, Daxton Hill, and David Ojabo, they were replaced with depth in their stay. Mazi Smith and freshman standout Will Johnson have been two of the top Wolverine defenders, but the overall group plays with high

effort and sees great success against opposing offenses.

The Wolverines’ formula for success to win this game is no different than the rest, play solid defense and run the ball at will.

Entering the Fiesta Bowl, head coach Jim Harbaugh might have concocted the perfect balance of star power and depth to get them over the hump and claim their 12th national title.

Texas Christian University Horned Frogs finished the season 12-1, with their lone loss in the Big 12 Championship game against Kansas State. This season is the first time the Horned Frogs have made a bowl appearance since 2018. This also marks the first appearance for TCU in the College Football Playoffs.

The Horned Frogs have been terrific all season. Led by the Walter Camp National Coach of the Year winner, Sonny Dykes, TCU hopes to take down the undefeated Wolverines in the Fiesta Bowl and clinch its spot in the national championship.

Led by Heisman Trophy finalist Max Duggan, the TCU offense has been problematic for the opposition all year. Up to this point, he has thrown for over 3,300 yards combined with 30 touchdowns to only four interceptions.

Duggan’s go-to target has been wide receiver Quentin Johnston, who has had 903 yards along with five touchdowns so far this

season.

The ground game has been dominant all year as well. The rushing attack has been led by Kendre Miller, who racked up over 1,300 yards and a staggering 17 touchdowns, the sixth most in the nation.

The question mark for the Horned Frogs has been the defense. The defensive unit has allowed opposing teams to average 25 points per game. They will have their hands full against a potent Michigan offense that averages 40 points a game.

The defense does have some talented players that could give the Wolverines some trouble. TCU features a solid linebacker core that is held down by the team’s leader for tackles, Johnny Hodges and team sacks leader, Dee Winters. This linebacking core will need to stand tall against the daunting Michigan rushing attack that will be led by running back Donovan Edwards.

If the defense holds its own, and the Duggan lead offense continues to light up the scoreboard, then the Horned Frogs

Frogs

may have the recipe to pull off the upset.

The Horned Frogs may be underdogs heading into this matchup, but they have what it takes to take down the undefeated Wolverines and secure themselves a spot in the national championship game.

Erik Moses is in the business of putting smiles on people’s faces.

The sports executive and business leader says that’s why he accepted the role as the Fiesta Bowl’s executive director and chief executive officer.

“Now more than ever, in my five decades on this planet, people need a reason to smile and forget the things that are bringing them down in their lives,” says Moses, who started his job December 1.

“We need a way to connect with our fellow citizens that has us on the same team for a while. We’re so fractured in this country — Democrat/Republican, blue/red. Sports has a way of uniting people, even if it’s just for a couple of hours during the Fiesta Bowl.”

Moses comes to Arizona with a proven track record as an attorney, entrepreneur, economic development professional and chief executive.

The Fiesta Bowl Organization is anchored by the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl, Guaranteed Rate Bowl and the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl Parade presented by Lerner & Rowe. As a community nonprofit, Fiesta Bowl Charities has granted millions of dollars back to the Arizona community.

Moses joins the Fiesta Bowl from Nashville Superspeedway where he served as president and general manager since 2020. The track had been dormant for 10 years and under Moses’ direction was revitalized to host a sold-out Cup Series event on Father’s Day 2021 that earned kudos from NASCAR and the motorsports industry for its execution and community engagement.

Prior to that role, he led three sports and entertainment organizations: as chief executive officer of the DC Sports and Entertainment Commission, Moses oversaw the formation and founding of the Military Bowl, now celebrating its 14th anniversary, and also facilitated the creation of the AT&T Nation’s Football

Fiesta Bowl

Classic featuring the tradition, unity and heritage of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

While in DC, he was also influential in the successful recruitment of MLB to the Nation’s Capital and the construction of the acclaimed Nationals Park — home of the MLB Washington Nationals and cornerstone of the revitalization of the Southwest area of Washington, D.C., into a vibrant destination point of the city.

As Senior Vice President of Events DC, Moses solidified his expertise in sports tourism and event creation as the chief advocate for sports, entertainment and live events. He managed multiple venues – including the historic RFK Stadium, the Entertainment and Sports Arena at St. Elizabeths and the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. His responsibilities included creating industry-leading partnerships with A-list brands to support local events, overseeing a community grants program and maintaining strong

relationships with major league sports teams and their governing bodies.

Moses’ last stop in Washington was as the founding president of the DC Defenders of the newly launched XFL spring professional football league, where he guided all aspects of the team’s business operations and fan experience. The team quickly climbed to become the standard bearer of the league in the areas of gameday experience, ticket sales, corporate partnerships, content and community engagement.

Prior to entering the sports and entertainment space, Moses was the first director of the District of Columbia’s Department of Small and Local Business Development; a director of business development and senior legal counsel at AOL; and an attorney at Dow Lohnes PLLC and Fisch Sigler LLP. He served as an adjunct professor in the renowned sports industry management program at Georgetown University’s School of Continuing Studies

The Guaranteed Rate Bowl has been a staple in Arizona for the better part of 30 years. The game has gone through many name changes through the years — most notably the Copper Bowl in the 1990s, the Cactus Bowl in the mid 2010s and most recently the Cheez-It Bowl just three years ago.

It settled on Chase Field, the home of the Arizona Diamondbacks, transforming the ball diamond into a professional caliber football field, through a collaborative effort

between the D-backs groundskeeping crew and volunteers.

Top-notch professional players have rolled through Arizona via the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, including Le’Veon Bell, Tyler Lockett, Mikah Hyde and Aaron Rodgers.

The 2022 matchup this December will host Wisconsin and Oklahoma State, which marks the first time the two programs have clashed.

“Well, we are excited about being in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl,” says Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy.

“We love Arizona. (It is a) great

place to be this time of year. So, we’re looking forward to a great game versus Wisconsin. A very tradition-rich football school that I’ve always watched, and not been around much, obviously, with them being up north and being in the other conference.”

New Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell added, “I followed Oklahoma State from afar for quite a while. I know what coach Gundy has done there. I know how well they have done. So, this is going to be a fun match-up, and I’m looking forward to it.”

The University of Wisconsin Badgers

The University of Wisconsin Badgers finished the regular season with a record of 6-6, finishing fifth in the Big Ten West.

The Badgers’ entry into the Guaranteed Rate Bowl marks their 21st consecutive bowl game appearance, the third-longest active streak in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. Since 2014 the Badgers are 7-1 in bowl games.

This season has been marked with ups and downs — on and off the field. The Badgers dealt with a mid-season coaching change when head coach Paul Chryst was fired after a slow start to the season. Jim Leonhard filled in as head coach for the rest of the season.

This will serve as Leonhard’s last game as head coach as the school announced that former University of Cincinnati head coach Luke Fickell will take over as head coach following the bowl game.

Despite the record, the Badgers possess the traditional formula that has given them success over previous years. The team heads into the game

with a solid defense and running game.

The defense is led by First Team All-Big Ten linebacker Nick Herbig. Herbig was a monster on the defensive side of the ball all year, as he finished up the season with 11 sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss.

On the offense, the Badgers are led by star sophomore running back Braelon Allen, who finished this season with over 1,100 yards and 10 touchdowns. With the Badgers facing an Oklahoma State defense that has been suspect all year, look for Allen to potentially have a big game.

The Badgers and the Cowboys find themselves in an unfamiliar situation heading into the bowl game as both teams’ starting quarterbacks have declared for the transfer portal. While there is no rule stating that players who have declared for the transfer portal cannot play in bowl games, Wisconsin’s Graham Mertz and Oklahoma State’s Spencer Sanders’ status is very much doubtful for this game.

Sanders’ absence would be huge for the Badgers as he is the biggest threat on the Cowboys’ offense.

Without him, look for the Wisconsin defense to try to get after the Cowboys backup quarterback and throw off the rhythm of the OSU offense.

The Badgers have faced adversity this season, however, a win here in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl could be just what they need to kick start the hype train for the Luke Fickell era.

Oklahoma State University Cowboys

The Oklahoma State University Cowboys enter the Guaranteed Rate Bowl with a record of 7-5, finishing fifth in the Big 12.

The Cowboys had sky-high expectations heading into the season. OSU finished last season with a record 12-2 and looked to build on the success this year.

Things were going according to plan early on this season. The Cowboys had a perfect record of 5-0 through the team’s first five games. However, the rest of the season would not be so kind. Oklahoma State would limp across the finish line, finishing out the season going 2-5 to finish the season at 7-5.

While the second half of the season did not go as planned for the Cowboys, they will look to save face at this year’s Guaranteed Rate Bowl with a win over the Wisconsin Badgers.

This will be Oklahoma State’s 17th straight bowl game under head coach Mike Gundy. Gundy has 11 bowl game wins under his belt and is tied at ninth place among all-time bowl wins as a coach. If the team is victorious against the Badgers, Gundy would move up to 12 wins and would be tied at sixth place.

The team has relied heavily on the production of its quarterback, Spencer

Sanders, who put up over 2,600 yards and 17 touchdowns. He added almost 400 yards on the ground and eight more touchdowns.

However, Sanders is entering the transfer portal. Should Sanders not play in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, the Cowboys could turn to Garret Rangel or Gunnar Gundy to fill in.

When the offense is hot, the Cowboys can hang with the best of them.

The team scored over 30 points in seven of their games. However, the defense is also susceptible to letting other teams hang huge scores on them as well.

The Cowboys live and die by the shootout, and if they wish to have success in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, the offense better come to play.

With or without Sanders, the Cowboys will still look to get the job done. However, the hole Sanders’ absence could leave on the team is undeniable.

With the transfer portal hitting the Cowboys roster hard, they will look to other key players to step up to help the team win.

One such player who could make some noise is freshman running back Ollie Gordon, who had a breakout game in the team’s loss to West Virginia

in the last game of the regular season.

This season can only be described as a disappointment for the Cowboys, given the expectations placed on them heading into the year.

However, should they come out of the bowl game with a win against another transfer portal ridden team in Wisconsin, they just might be able to find a silver lining on the ride back to Stillwater.

Barstool Arizona Bowl

2:30 p.m. Friday, December 30 • Arizona Stadium, 1 N. National Championship Drive, Tucson

In 2015, the NCAA committee sanctioned its 41st bowl game, the Arizona Bowl, whose title sponsor is Barstool Sports.

Unfortunately, Barstool hasn’t hosted a bowl game yet. The 2021 event between Boise State and Washington State was canceled due to a spike in COVID-19 cases on the Boise State roster.

The 2022 Barstool Arizona Bowl though is in full swing.

Since the bowl game’s sanctioning, the matchups have been

entertaining almost every year. The Arizona Bowl pits the Mountain West Conference against the MidAmerican Conference.

The last iteration of the Arizona Bowl was in 2020, where Ball State defeated No. 19 San Jose State, 34-13.

2022 will feature Wyoming and Ohio.

Wyoming is the second team to play multiple matchups in the Arizona Bowl, as it defeated Georgia State in 2019, 38-17, while Ohio is making its first appearance here.

The game pits two teams who finished near the top of their respective conferences and looks to be a solid matchup.

The Wyoming Cowboys finished the year with a record of 7-5, second in the Mountain West Conference Mountain Division.

The Cowboys will face off against the 9-4 Ohio Bobcats.

The Bobcats head into this game fresh off a loss in the MAC championship game and will look to finish their season off strong with a win against the Cowboys.

The University of Wyoming Cowboys

The University of Wyoming Cowboys are heading to the Barstool Arizona Bowl after finishing the season with a record of 7-5, good enough for second place in the Mountain West Mountain Division.

Led by head coach Craig Bohl, the fourth youngest program in the nation won five of its seven games in comeback fashion, leading to victories over its three rivals — Utah State, Hawaii and Colorado State. The Cowboys are also entering their fifth bowl game in seven years, the most frequent in program history, and coming off a 52-38 victory in the 2021 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

On offense, their stars lie with their running game, as they have three running backs with over 300 yards. Led by junior running back Titus Swen, a back who put up over 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns, the Cowboys will look to ride their horses on the ground.

If they need to go to the air though, they have a sophomore receiver Joshua Cobbs. The 6-foot-

4 receiver chalked up just over 400 yards on 35 catches, and two scores. If he gets hot, it opens a world of hurt for opposing defenses.

The true strength of the team lies in their defense, though. The unit is led by First Team All-Mountain West linebacker Easton Gibbs, who finished the season with 111 tackles. Other standouts are sophomore defensive end DeVonne Harris, who had a breakout season, as his eight sacks and 13 tackles for loss were both team highs. Lastly, redshirt freshman defensive end Braden Siders racked up an impressive five sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss, while adding in two forced fumbles.

The Cowboys will need their defense to continue to play well if they wish to knock off the 9-4 Ohio University Bobcats. The Bobcats offense had been led by junior quarterback Kurtis Rourke, who amassed 3,256 passing yards along with 25 touchdown passes to only four interceptions. However, he was ruled out for the rest of the season following a knee injury. With Rourke now out, the Cowboys defense can line up

against a backup quarterback.

If the defense paves the way for the offense to see success against their counterparts in Ohio University, the Cowboys could continue their bowl game winning streak to four in a row.

Wyoming Offensive Line

The Ohio University Bobcats have made a massive program turnaround from 2021 to 2022. In 2021, the team finished 3-9, producing its first losing season since 2008.

The Bobcats flipped the script this year with a 9-4 record and finishined as runners-up in the MAC Championship game. The Bobcats and second-year coach Tim Albin started the season 2-3 through their first five games. After that, they went on a seven-game winning streak to find themselves in the MAC Champonship Game, where they fell short to the Toledo Rockets 17-7. The Ohio offense was on a roll under the guidance of star quarterback Kurtis Rourke. He put up a blistering 3,256 yards and 25 touchdowns, compared to only four interceptions. Unfortunately, Rourke suffered a knee injury in late November. His backup, CJ Harris, took over in the MAC Championship Game. The offense lacked much of the firepower it had under Rourke. Harris is coming off a lackluster performance in the

Ohio University Bobcats

MAC Championship Game, completing 17 of his 31 passes for 163 yards and an interception.

Other key factors for the offense are redshirt freshman running back Sieh Bangura. He comes into the bowl game with just over 900 yards and 12 scores on the year.

Receivers Jacoby Jones and Sam Wiglusz carry the load through the air, as both have had good seasons, with Wiglusz’s 11 touchdowns, ranking sixth-best in the country.

The defense is deep and has playmakers at all three levels, starting with star linebacker Keye Thompson, paving the way with a full board of stats: 96 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 6.5 tackles for loss, one interception, one forced fumble and three pass breakups. The Bobcat leader is key to the functionality of the unit.

In the secondary, Tariq Drake and Zack Sanders have three interceptions on the year and play tight coverage, serving as the security blanket behind Thompson.

If the Bobcats wish to win the Arizona Bowl, they will have to find a way to get the offense rolling with-

out Rourke. Albin must find the right mix of air attack and ground game with Harris if they hope to overcome a tough Wyoming defense.

The defense will also need to be ready to stop a potent Cowboys rushing attack.
