COMMUNING IN THE CANYON

CARRIE RAE WOODBURN’S TERRA SAGE MERCANTILE IS DEVOTED TO CREATING SANCTUARY SPACES FOR YOUR GARDEN AND HOME. BY JUSTINE AMODEO / COURTESY OF LATITUDE33 MAGAZINE

The idea for Terra Sage Mercantile came to Carrie Rae Woodburn three years ago when she was contemplating the compelling notion of “the aesthetic of how we live our life in every setting.” Why not create a space that brought together all aspects of her professions — artist, spiritual practitioner, leadership — in order to offer community events and classes, “places to share experiences. It’s so much more than a place to come and shop, it’s a place to come and connect.”

Visitors to Laguna Canyon’s Terra Sage Mercantile—like Woodburn’s charming Sawdust Festival booth and home studio, all shared with her husband, the artist Andrew Soliz, who owns Tatankamani Woodworks, the woodshop next door — will find her soulful leatherwork and jewelry, as well as her curated collection of home décor, vintage clothing and an artists’ collective. A unique garden oasis, from pots to

pollinator attracting flowers, blooms from a concrete slab. A storefront made from a container is full of Woodburn’s handsewn leather purses, belts, jewelry and wallets.

The new space is a passion project for Woodburn, who, despite having a home studio for the past ten years, wanted to start curating lines and design elements that she loves, which also “compliments Andrew’s furniture showroom, where we’ve added curated home decor items showing alongside his furnishings.” Shoppers can browse hardto-find specialty items like Tala Lighting, Vintage Vinyl floorcloths, architectural doors from India and Morocco, a slab of wood from an Olive tree reclaimed from the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland, wearable art, planters and plants to create garden sanctuaries. “Everything is for sale,” says Woodburn pointing to the flowering plants. A few beautiful plants create an environment. We’ve instantly got bees, birds and butterflies.”

She’s also planning to do more custom work here, as well

as showcase other artists. “People can have custom belts made. I can do more production work. And we have so many Sawdust artists who are friends. There aren’t enough opportunities for local artists to generate revenue year-round, so we hope to fill the gap with some interesting offerings.”

Soliz recently received 5013C status for The Laguna Institute of Woodworking and the Arts, which is dedicated to “providing enriching and accessible woodworking education, promoting sustainable practices in the arts, and creating a vibrant community of artisans teaching through the institute.” The institute will offer woodworking workshops and classes, sustainability education, artist-in-residence programs and woodworking apprenticeships.

The space will also be home to quarterly pop-up events, as well as artist demonstrations, art classes, cooking classes, breathwork workshops and other community events. (@terrasagemercantile; Terrasagemercantile.com)

for changes as it can be a leading indicator for price changes.

The market has been cooling over time and prices have recently flattened. Despite the consistent decrease in Market Action Index (MAI), we’re in a Seller’s Market (where significant demand leaves little inventory available). If the MAI begins to climb, prices will likely follow suit. If the MAI drops consistently or falls into the Buyer’s zone, watch for downward pressure on prices.
