PREGAME AN ASU FOOTBALL GAME
YOUR GUIDE TO THE BEST LOCAL PLACES FOR EVERY SITUATION JASMINE KEMPER • COLLEGE TIMES
P
regaming is a serious sport. Where you choose to prepare yourself (and your liver) for an ASU football game makes all the difference. When it comes down to it, there’s no better choice than a place that was designed for ASU students: Devil’s Advocate. Conveniently located less than a mile away from Wells Fargo Arena, this place is the epitome of a college sports bar. Devil’s Advocate is owned and operated by ASU Alumni, so beer and football are pretty much their specialties. With weekly food and drink
YOUR BACHELOR’S DEGREE IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK.
specials, they make it a fun and affordable place for students to quench their thirst all the time, but especially before the big game. While they house a variety of beers on tap, you can easily find your favorite local beers from breweries like Four Peaks, SanTan Brewing and Lumberyard. If beer isn’t your thing, you can grab one of their specialty drinks created with ASU in mind like the “Devilrita” or the “AZ Sunset.” They are open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.,
which means you could always come back to celebrate (or ease your sorrows) after the game ends. With a ton of fun waiting inside like pool, shuffleboard, games, dancing and flat screen TVs, Devil’s Advocate is the perfect hangout spot for anyone looking to prepare for a Sun Devil home game.

HOW TO...
NORMCORE NORMAL IS THE NEW EDGY CHRISTINA CALDWELL • COLLEGE TIMES
W
hile you’re busy rocking gauges, tattoos, studded duds and freaky shoes, there has been an even edgier trend bubbling— “normcore.” Actually, the edginess of “normcore” comes from not being edgy at all. And in turn that’s edgy... or something. Whether normcore is actually a trend or an elaborate practical joke is up for debate. Too-coolfor-school types (Yes, we’re avoiding using the trite word “hipster” for a reason.) wear it in a nearly-mocking, ironic way. Basically they’re looking to blend in (like a normie square) instead of stand out (like a pre-teen diving into a Scrooge
McDuck-style mound of Hot Topic bracelets). Here’s how to do it effectively.
HAIL SAINTS JERRY, GEORGE, ELAINE AND KRAMER The cast of “Seinfeld” is the definition of normcore. (See also: “Friends.”) High-waisted mom/ dad jeans, poofy hair, button down short-sleeved shirts and tennis shoes all day errday are the building blocks for normcore. If it’s baggy and unflattering, but yet somehow also fitted, it probably fits into the trend.
GO SHOPPING IN MOM’S CLOSET Yes, even if you’re a guy. Those
“Life is Good” T-shirts and Members Only jackets will look so amazingly normcore, your friends won’t be able to handle how impossibly bland you look.
BE GOOD LOOKING We forgot to mention something: If you’re not good looking, this trend won’t work for you. You won’t end up looking so hilariously, ironically normal, but instead you’ll look like an actual normal person. That is unacceptable.

11 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT . . .
SPARKY
FOOTBALL SEASON WILL SOON BE IN FULL SWING, WHICH MEANS SPARKY WILL SOON BE DONNING HIS UNIFORM AND GETTING THE CROWDS GOING. WE FIGURED WE MIGHT AS WELL GET TO KNOW THE GUY BEFORE WE MAKE HIM DO A BAZILLON PUSH-UPS IN THE INFERNO.
11
ASU HAS SEEN SEVERAL MASCOTS Previous ones include an owl, a “Normal” (whatever that is) and a bulldog.
10
SUN DEVIL ATHLETICS
SPARKY WAS ELECTED In 1946, the student body of 1,015 students voted for the bulldog to be replaced by the Sun Devil.
9
SPARKY HAS A BIRTHDAY COMING UP November 20, 1946 was the official day that ASU’s mascot became the Sun Devil, which means that Sparky will be turning 69 in a few months. Get your mind of the gutter!
8
HIS FEATURES MIGHT LOOK A LITTLE FAMILIAR Disney illustrator and ASU alumnus Bert Anthony designed Sparky in 1948 and there are rumors that he drew inspiration for the facial features from his wellknown boss.
7
ECOLLEGETIMES.COM | AUGUST 27, 2015
8
SPARKY AND TYRION LANNISTER HAVE SOMETHING IN COMMON Sparky is technically an “imp,” and more specifically a mischievous imp. We like to think him and Tyrionwould be great drinking buddies.
6
HOOPS STARTED IT ALL He’s best-known for his football appearances now, but the men’s basketball team was the first to win a game as the Sun Devils in 1948 and therefore launched Sparky on his lifetime of victory.

THE ORIGINAL SPARKY HAD A PERSONAL TOUCH
4
THERE ARE ACTUALLY FOUR SPARKYS Sparky is always represented by four different students and they are numbered according to ability and experience: Sparky No. 1, Sparky No. 2, etc. Good luck finding out who they are, though. Sparkys are sworn to secrecy!
3
THAT COSTUME IS VERY, VERY, VERY HOT Sparky may look like he’s got his stuff together, but if it’s 110 degrees outside, it might as well be 150 degrees in the costume.
2
…AND EXPENSIVE Each costume costs approximately $4,000.
1
SPARKY TAKES A TUMBLE Because of his svelte suit and relatively small costume head, Sparky can still perform several tumbling moves during games. Because of the size and bulk of most other college mascots, he’s one of the few.
ECOLLEGETIMES.COM | AUGUST 27, 2015
Dick Jacobs was the first person to sport a Sparky costume in 1951. The costume was sewn by a cheerleader’s mother.

Do you have a lot of friends of the opposite sex?
Do you have a lot of friends of the opposite sex?
Yeah, I would say more than female friends because I grew up with brothers. I’m just used to being around males. I feel comfortable with girls, but sometimes guys are [easier] to laugh with.
Yeah.
Are they truly just friends?
Yes, they are. Well, I think it depends. It depends on how close you become with them. How much you get to know their personal life—if they know about yours. Then, I think then you can define that they are true friends. If you’re in a relationship, does that affect it? Do you think it should?
I don’t think so. I think it would actually be more positive in my life. I would be able to ask them, “Oh, maybe what [could] my boyfriend be thinking?” Because they are guys, they know.
Are they truly just friends?
Yes. If you’re in a relationship, does that affect it? Do you think it should?
Whenever I want to make friends, I just look at their interests. All of [my] female friends are the ones that I have contact with. Other ones, have [the] same kind of interests as me, so we can talk about this stuff. In my opinion, they don’t have any difference[s] with [my] male friends. They are just my friends, yeah . . . to be honest, I already prefer my girlfriend [over] my other females friends. My relationship[s] with my friends are unlike with my girlfriend.

BERNIE THINKS...
A TOTALLY REAL COLUMN TOTALLY WRITTEN BY BERNIE SANDERS. *TOTALLY...
H
ello, young person.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been a young person. In 73 years I have gone from not cool (if you ask Boris, the neighborhood bully from my youth in Brooklyn), to cool (if you consider fighting for gender and racial equality “cool”), to not cool, to cool again (especially if you ask the neckbeards at Reddit these days.) Today I am asking for your support. Today I am asking for you to feel the Bern. I am a senator from Vermont running for president as a Democrat against Hill-dog Millionaire. I am not a millionaire. I am one of the nation’s poorest senators at a net worth of a mere $330,507. But what I do have is moxie, so now I’m here to answer your questions. What’s that? You want me to remark on the fact that Clinton gets hundred-dollar haircuts? No can do, kiddo. I’m running for president and how people spend their personal fortune is none of my business.
ECOLLEGETIMES.COM | AUGUST 27, 2015
16
Personally I just kind of let my hair get blown out by the wind. Typically a comb does a good job at ripping off the ends of my hair, rendering haircuts a totally superfluous expense. I spend about as much on my hair as I do pedicures for my pet raptor. (Get it!? I’m old!) How do you think I’ve amassed my fortune? It’s not by being pretty, kid! Oh, great. Now you want me to talk about #blacklivesmatter. I think my track record has shown that I think black lives matter. Hey, by the way, can you tell me what the pound sign in front of all that does? I’ve been trying to get active on those Twitters but hitting pound on my phone does nothing. Listen, can we get back to the real issues at hand? I have some pretty radical ideas, like that college tuition should be affordable and that women deserve to be paid the same as men. But there I go getting my head in the clouds again!
Bernie Sanders
*OK, fine. Not totally.

SUCCESS & MONEY DORM ROOM GOURMET
SO MUCH MORE THAN BOXED MACARONI AND CHEESE JASMINE KEMPER • COLLEGE TIMES
E
ating in college doesn’t have to mean dining on leftover pizza and ramen for days on end. There are so many recipes that you can make in your dorm that taste delicious and won’t break your already tight budget. We know that living on campus means having limited kitchen resources. That’s why College Times decided to test out some fun and easy dorm room recipes that can be made with just a microwave. Sound too easy? Actually, it was!
MORNING FUEL: This dorm-style latte is for those mornings when you’re too lazy to leave your room for Starbucks. You might feel weird whisking milk in your bedroom, or you might feel like a badass barista. Either way, it’ll taste good. What you’ll need: • 1/2 cup milk • 1/3 cup of coffee or espresso • 2 mugs • Whisk
BREAKFAST: ECOLLEGETIMES.COM | AUGUST 27, 2015

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so why not go all out with an omelet in a mug? Feel free to college it up with cheap ingredients. You can microwave bacon or toss in some spinach. We just used mozzarella, because who doesn’t love cheese? What you’ll need: • 2 eggs • 1 tablespoon milk • Toppings of your choice • Salt • Pepper • Mug
Directions: 1. Microwave milk for one minute. 2.
Place whisk in the cup and hold whisk handle between your palms, rubbing your hands back and forth quickly to create foam.
3. Remove foam and pour remaining milk into coffee. 4. Spoon foam over the top. Estimated cost: $.80
Directions: 1. Crack eggs in the mug. Add milk. Beat with a fork. 2. Microwave for one minute. 3. Add toppings and microwave for another minute (or until egg is cooked). 4. Season to taste. Estimated cost: $1.50
Yesterday’s dining hall bagel is now today’s pizza bagel. You can use whatever toppings you’d like, such as marinara sauce with cheese or Nutella with banana. We opted for pesto and meatballs. Did we make the right decision? (Yes. The answer is yes.) What you’ll need: • 1 bagel • 1 scoop of pesto • Mozzarella (or cheese desired) • Chicken meatballs
success & money

Directions: 1. Cut up meatballs and microwave for one minute. 2. Choose any flavored bagel. (Toast bagel first for crunchy crust.) 3. Spread with pesto. 4. Load bagel with meatballs and mozzarella. 5. Microwave for one minute or until cheese is melty. Estimated cost: $4.04
DINNER:
A day isn’t complete without dessert. With just three ingredients, you’ll be on your way to an ooey-gooey chocolate mug cake. Top it off with whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, or hot fudge if you’re feeling fancy. What you’ll need: • 1 egg • 1/4 cup powdered sugar • 1-2 tablespoons cocoa powder • Mug
Directions: 1. Combine egg, powdered sugar and cocoa powder in a mug. 2. Whisk together until well mixed. 3. Microwave for one minute. 4. Enjoy! Estimated cost: $.73

You can’t waste anything in college, so we crafted up pesto pasta with meatballs with the leftover ingredients from the pizza bagel. Just switch out the bagel for noodles and get to microwaving.

BLACKBOARD’S ‘NEW LEARNING EXPERIENCE’ PROMISES HUGE IMPROVEMENTS ALEXA D’ANGELO • COLLEGE TIMES

lackboard Inc., known for causing plenty of headaches to students all over the country, has launched a massive overhaul of its muchcriticized software, promising a more student-friendly design. The company says the redesigned software will be a new approach that fosters better engagement, interaction and quality learning. Aptly titled “The New Learning Experience,” it will serve as the first major test for the company’s new CEO, Jay Bhatt, who has promised since his takeover to win back the hearts of frustrated users.
The new design is supposed to be sleek and easy-to-use for both students and faculty. The previous software, used by millions of students across the country, was known for an awkward and outdated interface that was designed to be easy to use for faculty, not students. “The New Learning Experience,” in addition to a cleaner, more modern and userfriendly interface, improves the software’s workflow and integrates tools, like data analytics, that previously only worked in separate windows. common complaints was that Blackboard’s system required too many clicks to perform simple tasks. The company is also integrating its mobile app, an important step for a mostly college-aged user base. The old Blackboard app was known for force-quitting and causing students to pull out their hair while attempting to check grades on a smartphone or tablet. College students everywhere hold their breath as the promise of a new Blackboard comes to life.

the first string QB. Looking forward to this year, the rankings are definitely in their favor. Although preseason rankings should be taken with a grain of salt since they quickly change once the games get rolling, ESPN currently ranks ASU at 15 and UofA at 22, which means that the Duel in the Desert will be even more important this year. Although the Sun Devils are ranked very high, their PAC 12 division contains five other teams in the top 25, so they’ll need more than heart to get them through the season.
Passionate and determined, Bercovici and head coach Todd Graham are more than prepared to lead the Sun Devils and continue breaking rocks, one “W” at a time. The team’s new partnership with Adidas and their sleek new uniforms add even more hype to the upcoming year. Look for their intense and intimidating “Desert Ice” kits when they play Texas A&M in Houston on September 5. apper-singer Fetty Wap could be heard everywhere this year from “Trap Queen” to “My Way,” and now he is ready to come to Phoenix. On September 15, Fetty Wap will open for Chris Brown at US Airways Center. The 25-year-old New Jersey native has gained popularity from some unlikely sources. Kansas City Royals players have made a pact and have to reference “1738” in interviews. The four numbers are a nod to rap collective Remy Boyz 1738, of which Wap is a member, and make for such fun interview quotes as, “You could name 17 to 38 plays we’ve made all year,” from Royals
player Alex Gordon and team. Not to mention NBA firstround picks (and apparent Cassanovas?), Jahlil Okafor and Tyus Jones used his lyrics to woo Kendall and Kylie Jenner on Twitter. Wap’s rise in popularity came from his initial hit single, “Trap Queen,” which he says he knew would be a hit from the beginning. “I heard the beat first, then I went in,” says Wap. “I knew ‘Trap Queen’ would be a hit. I wrote the hook first. I was just in a zone. The verses came after that.” Wap is currently touring with Chris Brown across the nation and has also made guest appearances on other
big shows this year, including recently performing a surprise duet of “Trap Queen” with Taylor Swift in Seattle for her 1989 tour. Wap says he doesn’t believe his success is from doing anything different, just keeping things simple. “I don’t think I’m really doing anything different,” Wap says. “I just make music that I like to hear and think people would like to turn up to. Some artists put [in] too much thought and overcomplicate things. It may sound crazy but I just keep it simple.” Wap has released multiple hit singles without an album, but he is ready to deliver one soon. According to ABC
News, Wap recently revealed his debut album will drop September 25. Wap says to expect more of the same from his album. “Expect to hear Fetty Wap,” Wap says. “More of what you’ve been hearing. Good music.”

more alienesque. And the look perfectly matches the music. Even Aura’s sad songs are uniquely upbeat, with her electronic, forward-thinking sound being the perfect addition to those weird, eclectic summer music festivals. Aura’s second EP, Supernova, was released in early August and will be celebrated at her release party at Livewire on August 29. It has five songs, including the single “Dancing with Your Ghost,” a catchy tune that Aura wrote in memory of her little brother, who passed earlier this year. Aura says the song is a testament to the everlasting
connection between two beings existing in two completely different worlds at once. “My little brother was my biggest fan,” Aura says. “He always wanted to share my music with his friends.” “It’s funny, now the roles are reversed. He looked up to me for so long but now I’m the one looking up to him,” she says. Aura began singing at an early age, showcasing her unmistakable talent to only her close family. But at age 15 she began putting on live shows around Phoenix and writing her own music. For the last four years, Aura has been focused on making
music to share her message, but now she she’s hoping to share the positivity of her little brother in her music as well. Aura’s tunes have themes ranging from love to feminism and are all created using electric-based methods. With this album she has had the opportunity to write with other artists and grow in her music. “You could say the writing was star-studded,” Aura jokes. “But really the EP had different writers, all of which are fantastic, and together we were able to create some really great songs.” Though the writers have
changed, Aura says her music still has the same sound from her first album. “My sound has definitely matured with me, but it’s not a huge jump from the first EP,” she says. “It’s just very mature, with more mature themes, I think.” “I just want to make music and show everyone, girls especially, that it’s okay to be weird and to be whatever the hell you want.”

etter known as Harry Potter than for rapping, Daniel Radcliffe shocked everyone last October when he gave a nearly perfect performance of Blackalicious’ extremely complicated “Alphabet Aerobics” on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.” Longtime fans of the rap collective are familiar with Blackalicious’ impressive, tongue-twisting lyrics, but Radcliffe’s performance shared their gift with even more fans and now, despite serious health issues, Blackalicious is overcoming all with a new album. Titled Imani, the Swahili word for “faith,” this album represents more for Blackalicious’ DJ/producer Chief Xcel than just a set of songs. The album represents
confidence in their music and the belief that that his Blackalicious partner and vocalist, Gift of Gab, is in a good place. Gab, as Chief Xcel calls him, released three solo albums before his kidney failed due to Type 1 diabetes. Born about 43 years ago as Timothy Parker, Gab is continuing dialysis while awaiting a kidney donor. That experience, Chief Excel says, motivated Gab to return to Blackalicious. “Gab is doing really well,” reports Chief Xcel, known to his parents as Xavier Mosley. “One, he’s doing great, and, two, his story is one of inspiration. It’s the kind of thing where he wants to show people that yeah, he has some sort of health adversity, but it doesn’t mean anything stops. Case in point: He’s in the most
prolific period, creatively, of his life. He’s creating at the highest level, highest quantity of his life. He’s definitely thriving on every level.” Imani sees Blackalicious thriving as a whole. It features appearances by Lifesavas and Lateef, both of whom will open for Blackalicious at Crescent Ballroom in Phoenix on Friday, September 18. Also contributing to the album are Japanese-American rapper Lyrics Born, funk band Monophonics, polyphonic Afro-Pop singer Zap Mama

4. “Trap Queen” – Fetty Wap 5. “Watch Me” – Silento Wiz Khalifa, Taylor Swift and Fetty Wap remained in the top 5 for all the weeks in between, but “See You Again” feels too moody for the hot weather, and “Bad Blood” seems a bit like a cheap trick with the rap feature, star-studded music video and easy-to-remember but lame lyrics. Only “Trap Queen” comes out as a song made with the right intentions: go crazy, be loud and sing out of tune. These Billboard rankings do leave some critical contenders out of the picture, though, including The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face,” which has been near or at the top of the magazine’s Hot 100 charts for several weeks. Spotify made a playlist of their 25 SOTS picks, created by using its viral charts and filtering for a curated “feelgood impact.” There is more variety in this list, including “I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times)” by Jamie xx featuring. Young Thug & Popcaan, and “Lean On” by Major Lazer featuring. MØ and DJ Snake. Both of these songs mix elements of tropical music, trap and pop—components that are relevant to where the public’s popular tastes seem to be headed. So what did we learn from this year’s race? First, there are many artists that will do anything for a quick buck. Riding a topic like the SOTS can get you airtime, but it’s easy to sniff out a fraud. Most importantly, we learned that people’s listening trends continue to change, expand and combine as streaming services grow in use. This variety in sounds, and lack of one particular SOTS winner, is evidence of the changing music environment we are currently living in.

T
he search for the Song of the Summer (SOTS) is not the same as it used to be. With the oversaturation of modern media, more publications are trying to find a winner. And with an increasing variety of ways music buys and plays are tracked, it’s more and more difficult to pick one clear frontrunner. It wasn’t always this way. In years past, the SOTS have been easy to declare. Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” (2012), Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” (2013) and Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” (2014) all were clear summer anthems—catchy and bursting with energy. Looking to win the trophy this year, more artists were consciously trying to craft a SOTS. (Listen: Jason Derulo’s “Want To Want Me,” Demi Lovato’s “Cool For The Summer.”) But nobody likes a try-hard, and it’s best when a song feels genuinely fun and original. Billboard has run a “Song of the Summer” ranking since the week of

Despite knowing better, you’ll pet a cat’s tummy and get clawed up from head to toe. Be sure to tell the opposite sex you got your scars battling a mountain lion, not a house cat.
You’ve been feeling a little unsure of yourself in social situations, Aries, and other people are taking notice. They’ve also noticed that you’re a lot more tolerable when you’re drunk. We’re not saying you should always be drunk, but maybe just in situations that require you to speak? Think about it.
The worst thing about being a Taurus (besides being named after an abomination of a car) is your tendency to be materialistic. Be sure to write down everything you buy this month to see what you really need. An iPad would be useful for this situation. Don’t have an iPad? Maybe it’s time to buy an iPad.
Due to your unpredictable Aquarius nature, you’ll find yourself a bit off the beaten path. Luckily there are map kiosks placed all around campus, so you won’t have to look like a total noob for long.

So your new roommate might be a little bit of a weirdo, but have you ever thought that you’re the weirdo by not accepting that he’s sexually attracted to helicopters? College is about having an open mind, Leo, and now’s a good time to start.
Virgo’s symbol is the virgin. But we know what you did last night, Virgo. We know. And we’re not sure why you needed to watch “The Big Bang Theory” to help.

Woah! You spot a hottie in the library, but it’s too quiet in there and everyone will hear you trying to chat them up. It’s probably best if you just look up their Facebook and stalk them that way. It’s far less creepy.
Now’s a good time to get out and stretch your artistic muscles! Fall arts season is among us, and it’s a great time to show your friends your collection of traced anime drawings. They probably won’t even know they’re traced!
The full moon on August 29 might have you feeling a bit kooky, and that’s OK. Abnormal hair growth and blind rage is normal around the full moon. Buy some new razors and treat yourself to an athome spa day! Just ask your roommate to lock your bedroom door from the outside for the safety of the community.

Call your mom. She misses you and has so many questions. Did you figure out the laundry machine? Do you need money? You’re not just eating Hot Pockets, are you? Are you making friends? Is the crippling student debt you’re accumulating worth it?
