11 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT . . .
MARDI GRAS
CELEBRATING THE IDEA OF EATING RICHER, FATTY FOODS BEFORE THE FASTING OF THE CATHOLIC SEASON OF LENT, MARDI GRAS, OR “FAT TUESDAY” IN ENGLISH, HAS BECOME A FESTIVAL OF BOOZE, SWEETS AND A BIT OF DEBAUCHERY. HERE’S A LOOK AT SOME THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS FUN CELEBRATION.
11
ECOLLEGETIMES.COM | JANUARY 28, 2016

IT IS CELEBRATED AROUND THE WORLD
9
SWEDES EAT SWEET ROLLS
Known as Mardi Gras to the French Cajuns in Louisiana, other traditionally Catholic countries also have long-standing traditions and celebrations for the weeks leading up to Ash Wednesday, or the beginning of Lent.
In Sweden, the celebration is called Fettisdagen, deriving from “fett” meaning fat and “tisdag” meaning Tuesday. The people of Sweden will eat fastlagsbulle, more commonly called semla, which is a sweet, cardamom-spiced bun filled with a mix of milk and almond paste and topped with whipped cream.
10

VENETIANS WEAR MASKS In Italy, the festival leading up to Fat Tuesday is called Carnevale and while it is celebrated throughout Italy, some of the most famous celebrations are in Venice. Confetti is thrown in the streets while revelers wear masks so as to not be ashamed of their sins the next day.
EATING MEAT AT CARNIVALS IS A LITTLE IRONIC The term carnaval, where carnival has come from, originates from the phrase “carnem levare” which means “to take away meat” in Latin. Many Catholics still fast from meat on the Fridays of Lent.

BRAZILIANS DANCE AWAY THE ‘FAT’ Brazil’s Carnival attracts 70 percent of its tourists and the Rio Carnival frequently sees two million people celebrating. One other unique aspect of the Brazilian Carnival is the incorporation of the samba into the celebrations. Shakin’ off the “gras!”
6
THERE IS A MODERN MARDI GRAS IN THE CAYMAN ISLANDS This three-day festival attracts thousands of attendees every year and is now recognized as one of the island’s national festivals. They start it off with a more traditional Fat Tuesday, but put their own spin on things with an all-day EDM Ash Wednesday bash that is attended by many international celebrities and performers.
5
AMERICAN MARDI GRAS IS OLDER THAN OUR COUNTRY Arriving in the late 17th Century via the Le Moyne brothers sent by Kind Louis XIV. The pair and their exploration parties landed in the mouth of the Mississippi just before Mardi Gras in 1699, so they decided to name a few spots around that area after the traditional holiday. We wonder what they would think of Bourbon Street now?
4
2
THEY HAVEN’T ALWAYS THROWN PLASTIC BEADS There are multiple things to clear up with this one. First of all, beads have been thrown in the Mardi Gras parades since the late 19th Century but they were glass until the 1960s. They were quickly replaced by cheaper versions so that more could be thrown from the floats and in the 1990s, the beads started getting more and more elaborate. Lastly, locals think it gross and unnecessary to expose yourself to get the beads. Simply asking for them nicely should do the job.
1
THERE IS A KING OF CARNIVAL It’s kind of like the King of the Renaissance fair but also kind of not like that at all. Every year, the Carnival krewes, or the social clubs that organize Mardi Gras, decide on a “Rex” or the king of the carnival. The motto of each Rex is “Pro Bono Publico— for the public good.”
LET THEM EAT THE KING’S CAKE A very popular treat eaten in New Orleans during the Mardi Gras celebrations, a king cake is a cinnamon-filled dough cake, in the shape of a hollow circle with a white glaze on top and purple, green and yellow sprinkles—the official colors of Mardi Gras.
THE COLORS HAVE MEANING If you don’t see green, purple and yellow (or gold) when you think of Mardi Gras, then you have been living under a rock. Thousands upon thousands of beads in these colors decorate the necks of the revelers in New Orleans every year. Purple symbolizes justice, gold symbolizes power and green symbolizes faith.

‘LIKE A GIRL CHANGES CLOTHES’ DRESSING FOR ARIZONA’S SPRINGTIME “HOT N COLD” WEATHER
I ECOLLEGETIMES.COM | JANUARY 28, 2016
6
TAYLOR SEELY • COLLEGE TIMES SPENCER DENNIS
’m not much of a conspiracy theorist, but I swear, Katy Perry’s “Hot N Cold,” was definitely based on Arizona’s weather. My name’s Taylor, and because I’ve lived in Arizona my whole life and have a dangerous love for fashion, I have an endless supply of tips and tricks for dressing when the weather’s too hot, too cold, or downright indecisive. I’m thrilled to be College Times’ new fashion columnist; every month I’ll provide helpful style tools and report on the latest trends that won’t break the college budget. It’s practically February, which means Arizona’s nearing that time when the mornings and nights are freezing (at least for natives), but the midday is
hot. Rather than bundling up in dozens of layers and shedding them come lunchtime, consider these tools to get you past this tricky season: Tip 1 – Long shirts provide length to cover legs and avoid bone-chilling wind, and the short sleeves make it easy to air out midday. (Pictured shirt: Zara) Tip 2 – Leggings, when they aren’t see through and are worn appropriately, are a life saver. Be sure to find a thinner material that allows for breathing. Champion brand leggings from Target (pictured) are my go-to: thick enough to stay warm, thin enough to avoid sweating. Tip 3 – Trousers from stores like Forever21, Charlotte Russe
or other more budget-friendly shops are key. These pants are stylish and typically lower quality, which means thinner and helpful during midday heat. Bonus Tip – Wear tights on mornings too cold for thin trousers. Take them off before lunch and toss them in a purse—they take up little-to-no room. Tip 4 – Material is key when it comes to overcoats. Blazer-style coats have material on the outside that keeps bodies warm and lining on the inside that cools skin. (Pictured: H&M) For colder days, try thin wool coats that keep body temperatures just right. (Pictured: handmade coat from Zara.) For daily style tips, follow me on Instagram: @taylorseely Until next time…

How would you define the state of falling in love? Absolutely terrified, blissfully ignorant and exciting all at the same time. Do you think there are different kinds of love? How do they differ? Of course. I think there are several different types of love. The love I have for my family isn’t necessarily romantic love, but a very caring, sort of protective love—loyalty almost. The romantic love I feel for my boyfriend is different to the love I have for my friends, which is protective and loyal again. They are very different. Do you think the ability to love differentiates humans from other species? Why or why not? A dog has never hurt my feelings, I’ll just put that way. I think because humans have the ability to hurt you back, it’s stronger and you [build a] relationship over time. My dog has never been upset when I walk through the door. Animals’ love is unconditional and they don’t have the opportunity to break your heart. They also can’t talk to you about your feelings.
How would you define the state of falling in love? The state of falling in love is a feeling of bliss. You don’t think about a lot of other things in your life, like certain issues. I feel like they are still there, but it makes [it] a little easier because you don’t really think about them too much. You are distracted by the person you are falling in love with. You are just consumed by that one person. You want to spend time with them and be with them. Do you think there are different kinds of love? How do they differ? The different types of relationships we have differ between people: mom and son, husband and wife, roommate and roommate. Everything varies depends on which type [of relationship] it is. Do you think the ability to love differentiates humans from other species? Why or why not? I think it really would depend on what animals we are talking about. As humans, being the most cognitive animals in the world, we definitely have a far greater capacity for and more complex love.

HAPPILY NEVER AFTER TRUE STORIES FROM THE VALENTINE’S DAY OF YOUR NIGHTMARES
L
et’s be real, the perfect Valentine’s Day only happens in movies, but that doesn’t mean that all Valentine’s Days have to be horrible. After reading some of these, you’ll definitely be grateful for your plans to stay home alone, watch a Nicholas Sparks’ movie and go to bed early.
‘CAN’T BUY ME LOVE’ Some flowers, maybe a few chocolates … exchanging presents can’t be all that bad, can it? Oh, apparently it can. ECOLLEGETIMES.COM | JANUARY 28, 2016

“I was ready for my four-year relationship with what had started as my college boyfriend to come to an end, but I was looking to avoid ending it over a memorable time like Valentine’s Day or his March birthday. He made this especially difficult when he handed me a pink T-shirt with a pink rhinestone anchor encrusted on it that he had bought at a store next to where he happened to have had lunch that day. It was
nothing I would even consider wearing and it made the wellthought out gift I’d given him a glaring sign that our lives were heading different directions. I told him to return it and get his money back. I suppose, in the end, he did me a favor by giving me more justification in why he wasn’t a good fit for me!” –Female, 31 “My ex-girlfriend broke up with me a few weeks before Valentine’s Day. I guess that isn’t so bad, but she did mention in the fight following the break-up that the timing worked out because she was nervous to see what I would
buy her for Valentine’s Day. I guess I wasn’t very good at picking out presents?” –Male, 22 “My boyfriend of several years got me a Pedi-Egg for Valentine’s Day. Yes, that thing that you pick up from Walgreen’s that shaves the dead skin off your feet. I don’t know if he was trying to send a message or just ran out of ideas.” –Female, 28 “In my senior year of high school, I was talking to this guy and he gave me a card and a Cold Stone Creamery gift card. I went a few days later to get
the ice cream and when they charged the gift card, they said, ‘Your balance is $4.75.’ I was like, ‘Oh, what do you mean by my balance?’ The card said it had $15 and then the cashier told me there was only 2 cents on the gift card. And I hadn’t brought my wallet with me.” –Female, 19 “My high school boyfriend sweetly made me a mixed CD for Valentine’s Day. I listened to it constantly and was actually surprised that he put that much thought into a gift. He then proceeded to break up with me via text a week later. I listened to the CD again and
realized all of the songs were about breakups. Yep, he made me a breakup playlist. I didn’t see that one coming.” –Female, 25 “In second grade I asked my mom if we could buy one of those big chocolate bars for this boy I liked in my class. The next day we handed out all of our Valentine’s and I gave the chocolate bar to my crush. Two minutes later I saw him give it to another girl. I came home and told my mom I hated boys and never wanted a boyfriend. It turns out that I’m a lesbian so that kind of worked out.” – Female, 18

‘ALL BY MYSELF’ No one wants to be alone on Valentine’s Day, but it kind of sounds like these people were better off than with the losers that dumped them. “Last year, I was talking to this girl—the girl I’m actually with now—but I took her out on a date. Everything went almost too perfect. But, then, that same night, she called me, on Valentine’s Day, [and] told me she was leaving me to get back with her ex. I wasted so much time, and spent probably $300 that night on her. But, I suppose it all worked out. We’re together and happy now. I suppose that’s all that matters.” –Male, 18 “I had been talking to a boy on and off for a while my senior year in high school. We had just hung out the week before and things seemed to be going well this time around. Just a few days before Valentine’s Day, I get a text from him saying that he just wanted to be friends with me.” –Female, 20
“When I was in high school, my boyfriend at the time broke up with me the day before Valentine’s Day. But it was one of those things where I was waiting for him to break up with me so I was happy about it.” –Female, 35
“I was a hostess and I always volunteered to work on Valentine’s Day because I was the only hostess without a boyfriend. We had all these reservations and someone called like an hour before their reservation and had to cancel because their fiancée broke up with them.” –Female, 21 “I was working as a waiter on Valentine’s Day. As I was bringing this couple their complimentary piece of chocolate cake I noticed the guy’s girlfriend wasn’t in her chair. Turns out she had been seeing someone else and decided to tell him during dinner. I gave him the whole cake for free and he sat alone for an hour and ate the entire thing.” — Male, 21 “For Valentine’s Day I went on a date with this girl who I had been crushing on for a while, so you could say I was kind of excited. She wanted to go bowling. I hate bowling but she was super cute so went for it. Then we went to one of her friend’s parties and she literally left the party with another guy about halfway through. She left me alone at a party where I didn’t know a single person. I Ubered back home and watched an entire season of ‘Game of Thrones,’ so the night wasn’t totally ruined.” — Male, 20 CONTINUES ON 14
ECOLLEGETIMES.COM | JANUARY 28, 2016
“One year I drove three hours, round trip, to my high school basketball game so that my best friend at the time could watch her boyfriend play. Sure, having school spirit is great and all, but no one wants to drive that long for someone else’s boyfriend.” –Female, 19
“The one guy who I ever had a remotely serious thing with wrote me a letter. My birthday is the same week as Valentine’s Day so he [included them both]. It told me that he thought we should break things off.” –Female, 21

‘LOVE YOURSELF’ Justin Bieber’s latest jam is perfectly fitting for these poor souls. They’ll move on and are definitely better sleeping on their own. Also, we guarantee their mamas never liked these duds. “I found out on Valentine’s Day that the guy I had been dating for four months was also dating someone else. It became suspicious when he was making up excuses to not hang out on Valentine’s Day. He did send a ‘Happy MALentine’s Day’ text as a pun on my name, Mallory. I’m assuming he sent the same ‘Happy VALentine’s Day’ text to the other girl whose name rhymes with mine and happens to be more fitting for the holiday.” –Female, 26 “In third grade, I had a huge crush on this guy so I put a note in his desk. Just like ‘Will you be my Valentine?’ My best friend was his desk partner, so she asked, ‘Will you do it?’ And he was like, ‘Yeah, sure.’ Everyone told me I had to kiss him so I panicked and didn’t talk to him all day … or possibly ever again.” –Female, 18

“I had been seeing this guy for a few weeks when he asked me to go out on Valentine’s Day.
It seemed to be heading in the right direction so I was excited about my first ‘romantic’ Valentine’s Day. He took me to a semi-nice place, which we surprisingly got into without a reservation. He tells me that he wants this to be special so to order anything I want. We both ended up getting steaks. As we’re finishing up, he turns to me and goes, ‘You ready to go?’ I was confused because I hadn’t seen him pay but I thought maybe he had been stealthy and had paid when he had gotten up to go to the restroom so I wouldn’t have to see the price or something. We get outside and he goes, ‘Whew! I thought that manager would catch on to us leaving!’ Yep. I had unintentionally dined-and-dashed. That was the last time I saw him.” –Female, 20 “I met Kraig, who I thought was my soulmate, via the web. There was something about him that intrigued me. When I met him, I didn’t think he was interested in me, but the following day, he pursued me pretty aggressively. We spoke every day, would go out at least three nights a week. I met his son, who he said was from an ex-girlfriend, and his parents. It seemed too good to be true— and it was. On Valentine’s Day, he came over to my house in
the middle of the day and he was wearing a wedding ring. Flustered, I asked him about it and he said that he wore it to keep the chicks away. (He worked as a bouncer.) Still suspicious, I went to the county courthouse and did a search for a possible wedding certificate. Lo and behold, it was there. He had been married for several years. I immediately called him and asked why he didn’t tell me he was married. He said he wasn’t—so I read off his wife’s name, the preacher’s name, the church in which they were married and the witnesses’ names. He hung up on me. Still,
after giving it a rest for about a year, he started pursuing me again, so I repeatedly hung up on him. He even traveled from Michigan to Arizona to find me. Thank God I wasn’t home.” –Female, 46 “Last Valentine’s I decided to go to Tinder to find a date. I thought it was love at first swipe. Turns out, Jake wasn’t the dreamy-eyed blonde I saw on my phone. He was the guy standing next to him in the picture, and that guy asked me to pay for dinner because he just got fired from his job.” — Female, 23
“I started dating this guy and for Valentine’s Day he decided to make me dinner at his apartment for Valentine’s Day. He kicked me out of the kitchen and spent hours cooking. We sat down to eat and my mouth started to feel funny. When I asked him what was in the food he told me there were crushed peanuts in the soup. I’m allergic to peanuts. We spent our Valentine’s Day in the emergency room. It turned out to be quite the bonding experience so we’re still together but he’s too scared to cook for me now.” —Female, 19

SUCCESS & MONEY THE LUNCH BUNCH
PACKING LUNCH FOR THE FIRST DAY AT YOUR INTERNSHIP NICOLE CHOKSI • COLLEGE TIMES
T
he first day at an internship is always nerve-wracking, but your biggest issue may not be if you look the part or if you will fit in; It’s what to do for lunch.
ECOLLEGETIMES.COM | JANUARY 28, 2016

You never know if your boss will take you out, if the other interns will go out or if there will even be a refrigerator for you to store a lunch from home. The best thing to do is to just be prepared for all the possibilities. Before you can even begin to think about lunch, you have to start with the right breakfast first. Try to avoid things such as cereal or bananas, as those have ingredients that may actually make you tired. Instead go for protein-filled meals such as eggs or a yogurt to help start your day. Of course, another way to ensure that you stay awake is by drinking caffeine, but if you choose to not brew your own coffee, make sure you leave plenty of time for any delays at Starbucks. You don’t want to be late your first day! Now, what do you do about lunch? Easy! Bring a lunch
from home that does not need to be kept in a refrigerator, just in case there isn’t one, or you end up going out. Always make sure you have some form of payment method however, in case you go to lunch with other interns. Pack a small lunch, because larger lunches take longer to digest, leading you to feeling sleepy. Grab an apple, some carrots and a couple of crackers. Or try a peanut butter and banana sandwich which will give you energy and keep you full for the rest of the day. Bringing snacks and water is always a good idea, too. Snacks such as granola bars, mixed nuts or trail mix will help curb those late afternoon sleep vibes that might happen. Water is always something that you should have to stay hydrated though out the day. To save money and the planet, bring a refillable bottle with you.

GETTIN’ FLIRTY UNDER $30 BREANNE DEMORE • COLLEGE TIMES
If you’re anything like us, you have the taste of someone in their 40s or 50s, but the salary (or lack there of) of someone in their 20s. Luckily for our poor souls, most of the restaurants out of our price range offer pretty amazing happy hour prices. So, taking advantage of that, we’re proving you can still have a fun, delicious date for under $30.

This classy joint has several Valley locations, however we checked out the Mill Avenue spot. Although we checked it out during winter break, Mill was still steadily bustling. My courter had never heard of the national brewery nor their loved brewery-restaurants and I had only been to one in San Diego many years ago, so this was essentially a new adventure for both of us.
AMBIANCE

FOOD
Situated in the second story looking down onto Mill, this restaurant is the perfect stop for a beer before an ASU basketball game or for grub before hitting a few more bars on the strip below. We ascended the stairs and were greeted very nicely before being asked where we wanted to sit. Looking across the restaurant, I saw several open tables (We arrived at 4:45. We got hungry early.) and a bay window area big enough for two tables. I pointed at the special spot and announced “THERE. … please.” It felt like we were on a stage for the six other customers and I loved it.
Being at a brewery, we decided to order beer because we are firm believers that that is what you should do at a brewery. This being happy hour, the beers were excellently priced and our waitress was kind enough to let us try a few small samples as well. I ordered the Golden Export and since my paramour loves porters, he got the Robust Porter. When it was delivered to the table, he exclaimed, “Doooooope. I love when it’s so dark that even the foam is brown.” Suffice it to say, we were both very pleased by our beer selections.
While my beau buried his nose in his black brew, I was taken by the extensive happy hour food menu. Sliders of every protein buzzed through my brain while garlic fries and wings danced in front of my eyes begging for attention. We finally settled on their Märzenglazed chicken wings and French dip sliders. The wings were sweet and spicy and the sliders were oh-so decadent with their caramelized onions and side of jus.
TOTAL $29.98 for two beers and two very filling appetizers.

oud, rowdy and nothing like a typical golf tournament, the Waste Management Open has earned a certain reputation among golfers and caddies alike. It also happens to be one of the Valley’s biggest draws every year. While most of us probably have our own WM Open stories to tell, we here at College Times wanted an inside scoop so we chatted with Ben Shur, recent ASU alum and a caddie at last year’s Open for teammate Jon Rahm, about his experience on the infamous golf course.
didn’t begin to play competitive golf until I was in high school. High school introduced me to junior golf. Because as a kid, I was unaware there were junior tours or high school golf for that matter.
College Times: How long have you been golfing and what got you into it? Shur: I have been golfing since I was two years old. I didn’t keep up with golf, nor did I like the sport as a kid. I was always interested in playing basketball. I
What was your experience being on the ASU golf team? I think I appreciate and enjoy being on the ASU golf team more than others because I walked on to the team my senior year. It is true, things earned are valued a lot more
What is your favorite part about being out on the golf course? I love being on the golf course because it is something I can challenge myself everyday at. No matter what, there is always something I can improve on: [whether] it be technique, strategy or mental toughness.
than things given. Being on the ASU golf team has been the best thing to happen to me. The teammates are basically my family. They will always be there for me as well as help me improve my golf game. The events I have traveled to have always been fun, from the courses we play to the activities I get to do with the team. In your opinion, what makes a good caddie? To be a good caddie, I believe [it] depends on the type of player you are caddying for. For instance, when I caddie for Jon [Rahm], I make sure the little things are taken care of—such as everything is stocked up in his bag, he has plenty of time to warm up, people aren’t distracting him, he has water and food throughout the round. CONTINUED FROM 22 we are playing I try to make sure he is comfortable with the club selection. We bounce ideas of what club and type of shot to hit. What else is involved other than just handing the golfers their clubs and carrying their bag? Other than just handling the bag, I think it’s key to make sure the player isn’t always thinking about golf and his round. For example, when I was caddying in the Waste Management, Jon hit a phenomenal shot from the desert on the par five number 13. From 250 yards he sliced a five wood onto the green. He immediately gets excited and yells, “Ben! Did you see that shot?” I reply, “Yes, but did you see that girl over there!?” He laughs. I try to keep things as serious and [yet] as light as possible with him. What is the most fun part about caddying as opposed to playing? The best part about caddying is learning the game—seeing the game in a different perspective and how other players play shots. I also enjoy meeting new golfers who Jon gets paired up with.

Tell me about your experience at the WM Open last year as Jon Rahm’s caddie. Caddying in the Waste was amazing. We got a courtesy car to start the week off. I was able to interact with the players and be inside the ropes, as well as enter buildings the general public couldn’t. I also was able to see how a PGA tour event worked inside and how well the players were treated. Also having friends outside the ropes cheer us on was a bonus for us. I’m sure you have been to the WM Open as a spectator before , so how was it different attending as a caddie?
Being a spectator at the Waste is very difficult. I’m not a big fan about being in big crowds, so that’s a tough part. Along with finding parking and the player you would like to watch, being involved in the tournament makes life a lot easier. Is the 16th hole as crazy as it seems? The 16th hole is LOUD. Walking through the tunnel and having people cheer and boo is amazing. It gives you a big adrenaline rush. Being a player I can see how Jon hit his club a bit further than he wanted with having the adrenaline pumping. Being an ASU player made life a lot easier in that stadium. How important is it to have a close friendship, as I’m sure you have with Rahm, with your caddie? Well, being a close friend with Jon, it made it easier to caddie. He treats me very well, obviously more as a friend than a caddie. It also makes it easier for me to step and tell Jon not to hit a club or to express my true opinion ‘cause either way, we respect what we have to say and try to determine whose idea is the smart choice in that moment. Also, it makes it easier to make small talk to distract him from the tournament when we are walking to the next shot. What is something that our readers might not know about being a WM Open caddie? Is there any special etiquette you must follow? Well, being a caddie, the etiquette is very similar to playing in golf. You just have to be more aware of where everyone is and where their ball is. When your player is away, you pull the pin out. When your player is the last one to putt out, you take the flag from the other caddies. As well as watching for the players “through line.” (The through line is the line on the other side of the hole the player is putting
if he were to miss the putt. It would be his line for the next putt past the hole.) From a golfer and caddie standpoint, what are your thoughts on the WM Open? As a golfer and spectator I think it is a great event. It is definitely a different atmosphere as well as spectator etiquette. Talking to some of the players such as Brandt Snedeker and Keagan Braddley, they say the spectators can be a bit loud, but going into this event you have to expect it. As for Keagan being a Patriots fan, I heard a couple spectators harass him during the round, and say some uncalled for things. I can see the event being more relaxed since it’s a more carefree atmosphere, but frustrating at the same time because of the noise you have to block out on each shot.

ENTERTAINMENT ‘BE MY BABY’ A LOOK AT REAL LOVE IN POPULAR MUSIC
W
ECOLLEGETIMES.COM | JANUARY 28, 2016
26
hile doing research for this column, I kept returning to a 1963 song called “Be My Baby,” performed by a female group called The Ronettes. Produced by Phil Spector, the song is thought by critics to be one of the finest pop songs ever made, and one of the first interpretations of the modern love song. I listened to it over and over for a week, won over by its doo-wop vocals, driving drum beat and bittersweet chord progression. “Be My Baby” is over in less than three minutes, but the heart-gushing emotions it invigorates carry on for much longer. Since that song was released, love, whether the bounty or lack of it, has been the topic of choice for most popular music. But much like Valentine’s Day itself, a lot of these songs express a fabricated idea of what love is supposed to be. You see it in track titles with the word in it, in the generic lyrics about desiring someone, in the unintentional cheesiness caused by overproduction (Listen: “Wind Beneath My Wings” or “My Heart Will Go On”). These artists tell you they’re talking about real love, but in this
MIGUEL OTÁROLA • COLLEGE TIMES
dysfunctional relationship, they don’t mean what they say. Like Shrek or Jay-Z, love is complex. It’s not just one emotion, difficult to even define. It takes a different shape for every individual, and as such, the interpretation of love can come in a variety of song forms. It ranges from the explosion of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You,” to the gentle intimacy of Peter Bjorn and John’s “Young Folks”, to the all-out sensuality of D’Angelo’s “Untitled (How Does It Feel)”. (From an unusually comic entry about love songs in the dry and explanatory Wikipedia: “A comprehensive list of even the best known performers and composers of love songs would be a large order.”) What these love songs all do is bring out a powerful feeling in people. The artist speaks from the heart, using his or her own experiences with love, whether positive or tragic, to relate to feelings we’ve all had before. That “love” they reference is direct, from the page to the final recording. This empathy is very powerful, even more so if it impacts mass audiences to love and appreciate one
another. It’s a reason why a song like “Be My Baby” can still be so influential to lovers and listeners to this day. The hearing is not as important as the feeling the listener does. So while a love song can get by on a warm delivery and production, that’s not the only way they must sound. (Listen to Soulja Boy Tell’em’s “Kiss Me Thru the
Phone” and tell me that’s not real love.) The passion, directness and honesty are always there, bottled for consumption. It’s easy to find the Disney version of love in popular music. I’m not sure if that says something about American ideas of love, the naiveté of mainstream musicians, or purely what sells and what
doesn’t. It’s much harder to find a song that explains what this feeling actually is. A song that you can share with someone you are attracted to, that puts into sounds something you could not. In its own ways, a true love song can define the emotion better than we ever will.

ECOLLEGETIMES.COM | JANUARY 28, 2016

“Mojave” is a dark thriller that had me on edge. While some of the dialogue seemed to drag on, I think the mysterious tone of the film kept me interested. William Monahan (“The Departed”) did an excellent job with the shots, but I will say the story lacked some substance. Thomas (Garrett Hedlund) is a Hollywood star who has always been in the spotlight. Despite his success, his glamorous life is apparently so unfulfilling that he decides to trade in the Hollywood Hills for…you guessed it, the Mojave Desert. In wanders Jack (Oscar Isaac), a psychopathic nomad who walks into Thomas’ camp uninvited. One fight, accidental death and a scene change later, Jack follows Thomas back to Hollywood. After finding out who Thomas really is, Jack grows to resent the actor’s privileged life and sets out to kill him. Though we do get some hilarious cameos from Walton Goggins and Mark Wahlberg, the film just needed a little more oomph. The only focus was on the feud between the two men, we get a tiny piece of Thomas’ back story via a scene with his mistress, but the lack of depth made the movie drag on. For 93 minutes, we watch an actor and a serial killer play
a very long game of deadly tag. I did enjoy the conversations between the two main stars, even if some of them were long and confusing to follow. Jack’s character was definitely my favorite. He is deranged and unstable, which was interesting because I never knew what he was going to do next. Despite its issues, the film wasn’t horrible. The chemistry between the actors helped the lack of story. Even though the two men are supposed to be against each other, Issac and Hedlund work extremely well together. They really committed to their characters, which was refreshing to see in a time where films can sometimes be diluted when top actors are involved.

MARLON WAYANS DISCUSSES HIS NEW MOVIE, ‘FIFTY SHADES OF BLACK’ AND HIS AMBITIONS OUTSIDE COMEDY
I STAY OPEN TO THE EXPERIENCE OF LEARNING AND GROWING. EVEN THOUGH I MADE 13 MOVIES THAT I’VE WRITTEN AND PRODUCED. I’M STILL IN THE INFANCY STAGE. I’M PART OF THE LEGACY, WHICH IS THE WAYANS, BUT I’M STILL IN THE INFANCY STAGES OF MARLON.

arlon Wayans is sitting, slouched in a bulky black leather jacket, in a conference room of the Hotel Palomar Phoenix. A stark contrast to his buoyant on-air screen personality—he’s reserved. Wayans is discussing his new film “Fifty Shades of Black,” a parody of the infamous book and movie of the same name, which opened on January 29. In the R-rated comedy mimicking “Fifth Shades of Grey,” Wayans’ millionaire control freak Christian Black introduces a shy college student Hannah Steele (Kali Hawk) to the world of “romance” after she interviews him for her 30 school paper. Unlike “Fifty
Shades of Grey,” this Grey is a little lackluster in the sex department. “It’s mature,” says Wayans, in between eating sections of an orange. “We made some mature choices, although it’s still silly. It’s crassy but classy. “We have the responsibility of having the female audience on this one. We had to find the sweet spot so both sides enjoy it. It’s a really funny movie. We want to make it really inclusive, but out there.” Wayans wrote this movie after seeing woman after woman engrossed in the book. “I saw women reading this book all hot and bothered,” he says. “I read the book and I was like, ‘This is basic.’ I was going to write my first parody book
or comedic retelling of that story. But I thought about how Christian Grey would be as a black man and how we’d be in that situation.” Wayans’ Grey is rich but he’s shady. The sex scenes in both movies are “pretty basic,” he explains. “I did that in the third grade,” he says with a laugh. “It was a chance to do some really funny jokes. Comedy and sex go hand in hand for me. We use the drama and the intensity to lead us to joke. It’s just the rhythm. It’s the same way we used horror in ‘Scary Movie’ to lead you to jokes.” Wayans says he had a “great time” filming “Fifty Shades of Black,” which he calls a romantic comedy.
“It’s going to have a female audience,” he says. “But it’s a guys’ movie, too. It should be a date movie where the woman comes out feeling good and the guy feels good because she feels good. “It’s like ‘There’s Something about Mary.’ It’s a hilarious movie with a nice romantic ending. It was crassy but classy. ‘Fifty Shades’ is a parody, but at the same time it’s a romantic comedy. It’s dark and creepy because that’s what the character was. We just made him a stalker.” Although “Fifty Shades of Black” is romantic, it’s still biting. “I’m an equal opportunity offender,” Wayans says with a smirk. “You’ll see in this
movie that it’s not in-yourface humor. We do all of the stuff through dialogue. I find a way to infuse those hotbutton topics into the movies, in a way that’s enjoyable not offense. We hit everybody from Donald Trump to Bill Cosby to Kanye to Kim, Beyonce, Jay. They’re part of pop culture.” Wayans is part of the first family of comedy, which also includes brothers Shawn, Damon and Keenen Ivory. He was born in 1972, after his two most famous brothers. “I think my brothers raised us like Jedis,” Wayans explains. “Keenen’s Yoda and Damon is Obi-Wan. Damon is more biting, so biting and funny. Those who don’t agree

Damon’s just a great stand-up. That’s Shawn’s world. I was comfortable being an actor. I always wanted to be different. I love my brothers to death. I chose to be different. I went to performing arts high school. I went to Howard University for film and for theater.” Those traits, he says he feels, gives him hope for winning an Academy Award even though his parodies and comedies have grossed more than $750 million in domestic box office, an average of nearly $50 million per outing. The money is great, but serious movies are on his mind, too. “I do these crazy movies, but I know my skill set as an actor,” he says. “One day I’ll do it all. But don’t get me wrong. I
like a good scatological joke. I’ll always be a 12-year-old boy.” He’s taking baby steps toward those dramatic roles, using each project as a stepping stone and a learning experience. “I just hope to get better,” he says. “I analyze that situation and say, ‘Here’s why we and how we made choices. Those failures will make me prove to be my greatest successes. “I stay open to the experience of learning and growing. Even though I made 13 movies that I’ve written and produced. I’m still in the infancy stage. I’m part of the legacy, which is the Wayans, but I’m still in the infancy stages of Marlon.”

still laugh. It’s a guilty pleasure. Keenen is spot on. He will not do a joke that is a party for one. He taught us to do things with kid gloves. It’s an attempt so everybody can love the joke.” Wayans wasn’t only in town to promote the film; he had gigs at the nearby Stand Up Live. It’s a profession he only started four to five years ago. “I think my hesitation [starting stand-up comedy] was because of a couple things,” Wayans says. “One was fear. When you grow up in a house with other comedians, it’s intimidating. We all had the same experiences, so who tells the joke first? “I think, two, is you don’t want to step on anyone’s toes.

FROM THE ‘50S TO THE ‘80S CARLY RAE JEPSEN CONQUERS ‘GREASE:LIVE!’ BEFORE GOING OUT TO PROMOTE HER NEW 1980S INSPIRED ALBUM CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI • COLLEGE TIMES

anadian pop star Carly Rae Jepsen is sitting on the stage of “Grease: Live!” which airs on FOX on Sunday, January 31. She’s set to play Frenchy, a charter member of the Pink Ladies, and she is awaiting a call to rehearsal. These are busy days for Jepsen, who must travel to Japan just after the airing and then start a U.S. tour. The 30-year-old also took a break from rehearsals to appear on late-night TV shows. But it’s all in good fun. “This is so great,” Jepsen 32
says. “It’s hectic but [‘Grease: Live’] is everything that I love about art. You can’t hold anything back when it’s live and there are so many talented people in this production. I’m hoping I can live up to that standard. We’re all very excited about the 31st.” When “Grease” is in the books, Jepsen will hit U.S. highways to promote Emotion, her third studio album. (The jaunt comes to the Marquee Theatre in Tempe on Wednesday, February 24.) The first single, “I Really Like
You,” established Jepsen as a bona fide star. Emotion and the forthcoming tour were inspired by the 1980s. “There’s something about the ‘80s that pulled me when I was making this record,” Jepsen says. “I wanted to make it an ‘80s love fest. I have a very talented keyboard player who happens to play the saxophone. So on tour, it’s a drummer, guitarist, bassist and myself. “We’re all the best of friends. We boogie together and play a lot of the songs from Emotion
and some of the songs from Kiss as well.” Jepsen prides herself on being a perfectionist and a workaholic, two traits that helped her write about 200 songs for Emotion. “The songwriting process was really long and confusing,” she says with a sigh. “I wasn’t sure what I wanted to make at first. I just started to collect all the things that I loved about pop music. I worked with many different writers and producers. I allowed myself to experiment and write over 200
songs. “Then it all became clear and that it was taking shape.” Being a workaholic, she says, isn’t necessarily a bad thing. “I think it’s sort of easier when you’re passionate about the work that you do,” she says. “It doesn’t feel as extreme as it balances itself out. It would feel [stressful] if I didn’t love it so much.”

Happy birthday, Aquarius! We’re really excited for you and all but you have to stop rubbing your birthday in people’s faces. It’s exciting for you but it really is just another day for everyone else. Don’t be so self-centered.
Well done! You’re off to a really good start with this semester. We predict that if you keep working hard, making time for all of your classes and making sure you stay healthy with plenty of sleep and good food, you will continue to succeed.
We get it. The new “Star Wars” movie was incredible. You’re totally justified in being obsessed with it. But maybe you’re a little too obsessed with it. Seeing it three times in the theatre is fine. Seeing it 20 times is a bit much.

Your fall-out with that friend from home isn’t just disappearing. If you want to still be friends with them, you know you will have to put in the effort. Oh! You don’t want to still be friends with them? Carry on then.
You’re so paranoid, Leo. That professor isn’t out to get you. Also, your roommate isn’t stealing your rubber bands; you’ve been using them. Your best friend isn’t trying to steal bae! And lastly, the dorm-cleaning people are not skimping on paper towels.
This Valentine’s Day will be one for the books for you, Gemini! Red roses, boxed candy, your favorite dinner, a beautiful necklace and even your favorite wine! No one needs to know you bought it all for yourself.

Your roommate is difficult. There are no doubts about that. Oh! You want advice. Umm . . . keep the lines of communication open. Explain your reasons behind everything. Don’t be passive aggressive and stop stealing their Captain Crunch so they have no dirt on you.
Cats are great companions. They are pretty independent so you’ll still have time for your studies and work and they even clean themselves. Just stop at one—two maximum.

Girls, lower your expectations for Valentine’s Day. He isn’t going to give you everything you’ve ever wanted on a random day in February. Guys, you need to step it up a notch. She wants more than a T-shirt from Target.
Binge watching “Gilmore Girls” and “Friends” at the same time was an excellent decision for your college career. Really! Great job! You have wonderful decision-making skills.
Patience is a virtue and apparently you’re pretty low in that virtue department. Buck up! You need to stay calm, be more helpful and remember that you’re not perfect yourself.
