Breakthrough Treatment for Constant Migraine Pain

Living with pain? We can help!

East Valley Clinic Provides Advanced Therapy (Chandler, AZ) There are several different kinds of migraine headaches and a wide variety of methods to treat them. Among the most debilitating headaches are intractable migraines. This refers to migraine pain that continues in spite of all traditional attempts of migraine prevention and treatment. Simply put, they are migraine headaches that just won’t go away. Novocur Pain Management Clinic is achieving significant results for treating intractable migraines with a breakthrough method called neuromodulation or neurostimulation therapy. A very small, thin device emits an electric current to nerve tissue, blocking the pain signals and replacing them with a pleasant vibration felt in the back of the head. This nerve blocking effect

provides a long term reduction in the intensity, duration and frequency of these headaches. Patients can “try out” this therapy before choosing to go ahead with a permanent implant. Novocur’s president and CEO Dr. Alex Bigham says, “Our priority is always to match the very best treatment for each specific kind of pain.” Bigham adds that neuromodulation has also proven effective for other pain problems related to failed back surgeries, sciatic leg pain, and peripheral neuropathy. A comprehensive guide to understanding migraine headaches and many other types of pain and pain treatments is available at novocur.com. For specific questions and appointments call the clinic directly at (480) 855-6686.

The City of Tempe Public Works Department reminded residents to set their trash cans at curbside by 6 a.m. on collection days. The announcement was made after the City reconfigured its waste and recycling routes, which resulted in slight changes to the collection time for some residents. The City periodically reroutes its waste and recycling fleet to improve efficiencies and reduce the number of miles that are traveled, resulting in fuel savings and carbon emission reductions. No changes, however, were made to collection days.

Duke hoops legend Bobby Hurley to be the new Sun Devils men’s basketball head coach in Tempe. Fans, administrators and boosters are hoping Hurley can move the needle and get the program headed in the right direction. Hurley’s biggest challenge—besides recruiting marquee players and winning basketball games—is getting fans into the seats. On average, Wells Fargo Arena is only 39 percent full during home games, which is the second worst in the Pac-12 Conference (behind only Washington State at 23 percent). If the pick and roll doesn’t work for Hurley, he can always try the two-for-one sale. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, who play at Tempe Diablo Stadium during Spring Training, had an excellent showing in 2015. Tempe Diablo Stadium finished fifth in average attendance with 11,218, which is an 18 percent increase over 2014. It wasn’t only Tempe that showed increases. The Cactus League set a new attendance record in 2015 with 1.89 million fans attending spring games. Seems Valley residents like playing hooky and attending baseball games.

ASU was long known as a “party school,” a reputation that university president Michael Crow desperately tried to shed for years. Online dating website DatingAdvice.com named Tempe as the top college town for dating in its ranking of the 22 best schools. The website factored in the number of students enrolled at each school, dining, nightlife and recreation options, and other fun activities to do Incidentally, Flagstaff (home to NAU) was ranked No. 18, while Tucson couldn’t crack the list. Couple travels to Jerusalem to run in marathon By Alison Stanton

Kim and Dean Rosenlof of Tempe recently traveled thousands of miles to run in the Jerusalem marathon. Dean joined around 1,500 other runners and completed the full marathon while Kim and 2,500 or so others ran the half-marathon. Dean said he and his wife had wanted to visit Jerusalem for some time. Registering for the run gave them the perfect excuse to get the trip on the calendar. “I’ve run about a dozen or so marathons and Kim has done quite a few, and we have a standard training routine that means we are pretty much ready at any moment to do a marathon,” Dean said. Kim said she and Dean had a wonderful time during their trip, which involved much more than running in the marathon. “We went to the Israel Museum which is where the Dead Sea Scrolls are located, and we toured the ancient

city of Jaffa and spent a day in Tel Aviv,” Kim said. The day after the race they enjoyed floating in the Dead Sea. “We really packed a lot in,” Kim said. Kim, who was raised Catholic, said walking the Way of the Cross was very inspirational, as was visiting the Western Wall, where she tucked a prayer written by a friend in between the bricks. “Just seeing all of the different historical and religious sites was meaningful,” she said. The relaxing activities were needed after a tough race—even elite runners from Kenya and Ethiopia needed about 20 more minutes than usual to finish the route. “The mayor of Jerusalem called it ‘athletically challenging,’” Dean said. “I didn’t realize it would be so hilly. There weren’t any flat areas so the whole time we were either going up or down.”

Kim and Dean Rosenlof traveled to Jerusalem to take part in the Jerusalem Marathon.

Dean said he enjoyed taking in the race’s sights and sounds, which included plenty of enthusiastic onlookers, one of whom took his role of cheerleader very seriously. “Normally when we slow down and walk people will still cheer us on, but there was one rider on the course who was very insistent with me that I didn’t walk. He was trying in Arabic to convince me to keep at my pace on a grueling hill. He was friendly but determined.” After Dean convinced the man that he didn’t understand Arabic, the man

on the bike switched to broken English, Dean said. “He said, ‘Go! go!’ and so I said, ‘OK, I’ll go! Go!” Kim and Dean said their entire trip was filled with amazing and pleasant experiences that they will always remember. “A lot of people asked us if we felt safe there. There was not one minute where we felt concerned,” Dean said “The whole city was very welcoming, and we didn’t find anyone who was not this way, or was not glad to have us there.”

Duane steps down as Corona del Sol basketball coach By Jill Hanks After leading the Aztecs to a historic four straight state championships and earning the title of MaxPreps 2015 National High School Basketball Coach of the Year, Corona del Sol High School head basketball coach Sam Duane Jr. is stepping down. Duane, who will remain a teacher at Corona, wants to spend more time with his family, in the classroom and to continue pursuing his administrative certification. He shared his decision on April 13 with his players and sent a letter to their parents: Dear Aztec Family, As some of you may know by now, I have resigned my position as the basketball coach at Corona del Sol. I have taken the necessary time after the conclusion of the season to make sure this is the right decision for me and feel the time is right. I believe I have given my best to Corona basketball the last 12 years and have enjoyed being your coach. I now want to take some time and look at all my options going forward. It is also very important for me to finish my administrative certification which will allow me to grow both professionally and personally. I want to sincerely thank each and every parent that has been a part of our program. Your support of me and the program have been a huge part of our success and for that I am grateful. I hope in some small way I have impacted your son in a positive way. I would like to thank every player that I have had the pleasure to coach for their hard work and sacrifices. I treasure the great relationships that we have formed and look forward to continuing these in the future. Thank you to my administration, faculty, staff, student body and all my coaches for our tremendous help and support. I appreciate each and every one of you! I hope everyone will understand and support my decision. It has been a wonderful 12 years and I will always cherish my time as the coach at Corona del Sol. boy for his dad, Corona coaching legend Sam Duane Sr. Duane Jr. went on to play for his dad while a student at Corona and later worked as one of his assistant coaches. “Sam has been such a great leader for our students. We are proud to work with him every day and we fully support his decision.” said Corona del Sol Principal Brent Brown. “Obviously we have some very large shoes to fill, but we are confident Corona’s tradition of excellence on the court and off will attract highly qualified candidates to continue the success here.” Tempe Union High School District Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Baca said, “I admire Sam for his professionalism and for his decision to do what he needs to do. He and the Duane family have remained dedicated to Tempe Union, giving back to our students for many years and we are truly thankful for them.” Duane became just the third boys basketball head coach when he returned to his alma mater to take over the program in 2003. Under his leadership, the Aztecs were 276-87 and qualified for the state tournament in each of his 12 seasons. In 2015 the Aztecs captured a fourth straight AIA Division I State Championship—it’s the first time since Phoenix Union did it from 1958 to 1961. Corona finished this season ranked No. 8 nationally by MaxPreps and No. 1 in Arizona. Duane became the first Arizona big division coach to win four consecutive state basketball titles. He was named MaxPreps National Boys Basketball Coach of the Year, AIA Division I Coach of the Year and Section Coach of the Year. Duane graduated from Grand Canyon University in 1992 with a degree in exercise science and earned a master’s degree in educational leadership from NAU in 2002. He was the first head coach at Mesquite High School in Gilbert and worked as an assistant coach at Phoenix College and Mesa Community College. While the actual Rio Wave mascot and name are still in development, the inspiration is clear. “The Rio Waves will help us tell our story by representing the water of the Salt River and how the college cuts through barriers and navigates around obstacles in order to find innovative ways to serve nontraditional students,” Bustamante said. The process has drawn quite a bit of community engagement. The college invited the public to submit mascot concepts last January, which motivated 134 people to submit more than 200 ideas, including things like the Salty Dogs, Sun Storks, Rio Salt Shakers, Rip Tides and Beach Buoys. After sorting through the most popular entries, the college Mascot

Raven, River Rat, Roadrunner, Surfer and Wave/ Splash. The college called on the public to choose the final three. More than 1,300 people responded and narrowed the search to Raven, Roadrunner and Wave/Splash. The college Mascot Committee and Executive Team decided the Rio Waves was the clear choice. The committee was comprised of faculty, staff and students. Their primary objective was to find a mascot that relates to Rio Salado’s unique mission, flexible learning format, innovative practices and college culture. Artists from the college’s Institutional Advancement creative services unit are already drafting design concepts for a Rio Wave mascot. Once complete, the college will call on the public once again to help name the mascot.

One thing is likely certain, the mascot will be responsible for leading event attendees in the wave. Rio Salado College is one of 10 Maricopa Community Colleges and one of the largest online public community college in the nation, serving nearly 59,000 students annually with more than 30,000 online. Founded in 1978, Rio Salado offers 600-plus online classes, 100-plus degree and certificate programs and general education courses. The college also provides support for dual enrollment, military and incarcerated students and serves as one of the largest providers of adult basic education in Arizona.

Bethany Christian School (BCS) in Tempe will be hosting information nights from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 pm. Thursday, April 30; Thursday, May 14; Thursday, June 11; and Thursday, July 9. Guests will learn about kindergarten– through eighth-grade classes at Bethany Christian School, meet the principal and administration, embark on campus tours and preview the curriculum. Applications for the 20152016 school year will also be available. Kids can attend. To reserve a spot for an information night, call (480) 752-8993 or email info@bethanychristianschool.org. Residents offer opinions in annual survey Tempe residents have voiced satisfaction and offered valuable feedback about the services, programs and facilities provided in their community. In late 2014, the City’s Community Attitude Survey was mailed to 3,000 households and 1,092 responses were received. Their ratings give the City of Tempe important information about how well it is providing services. Complete survey results are available at www.tempe.gov/residentsurvey. The Tempe City Council discussed the survey results at its April 9 work study session. The 2014 survey shows areas with high satisfaction ratings as well as areas that could be improved. Clean with vinegar to save money and the Earth mom cents

pasta vixen

With the array of cleaning options at the grocery store, it is easy to forget that the most natural and effective cleaner could be sitting in your cabinet at this very moment. Vinegar is an all-in-one cleaner. It can take on most any cleaning challenge, no matter the size, and there’s no need to worry about harmful effects typically associated with harsh, chemical cleaning agents. Budget conscious and eco friendly, vinegar is truly a product with many talents. An online survey conducted by The Vinegar Institute found that cleaning/disinfecting are the second most popular uses for white distilled vinegar next to food preparation uses. Here are a few hints on how to utilize the cleaning power of vinegar in your home: photo page

Apply paste to brass, copper or pewter and let it stand for about 15 minutes. Rinse with clean warm water and polish until dry. • Add 2 tablespoons sugar and 2 tablespoons white vinegar to a 1-quart vase of water to keep flowers fresh longer. • Mix white distilled vinegar and linseed oil to clean leather. Rub the mixture into the leather and then polish with a soft cloth. Register now for Summer Education Academy By Jill Hanks While May 20 is the official last day of classes for students in the Tempe Union High School District, many will choose to return to school for summer classes. Tempe Union’s Summer Education Academy will be held at Mountain Pointe High School this year. Registration is open to all high school students, including those not currently enrolled in TUHSD and including incoming freshman. For some students, summer school provides a chance to get ahead or explore new subjects. For others, it’s an opportunity to recover credits or focus on one subject at a time—all in an environment where students receive quality face-to-face time with highly qualified instructors. Summer Education Academy provided flexibility for Tempe High School senior Carmen Robles. “Summer School allowed me to make room in my schedule for the school year. That way I could make sure I could participate in activities like orchestra and other electives without being stressed or having to take on extra classes during zero or ninth hour to fit it all in,” Robles said. Robles’ classmate Itzel Quezada also attended last year’s Summer Education Academy, which was hosted by McClintock High School. She liked being in a new environment. McClintock is Noah Huerta’s home school and he enjoyed seeing fresh faces on his campus. “It was awesome to meet new students from the other schools,” Huerta said.

top 10 family events

TUHSD Summer Education Academy Director Susan Edwards said feedback from teachers and parents has been positive, too. “The instructors in Summer Education Academy really enjoy teaching in the summer and meeting students from all the campuses and also the ability to work with staff from other campuses,” Edwards said. “Parents appreciate the transportation that we provide and they really like the schedule because they still have time for family vacations.” Summer Education Academy has two sessions. The first runs from May 27 through June 12. The second session runs from June 15 through July 1. Summer Education Academy graduation is scheduled for July 1. Classes are held Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 12:40 p.m. Transportation will be available to Mountain Pointe from at least nine locations in Tempe, Phoenix and Maricopa for a fee of $25 per session. Tuition is $175 per session. There is financial assistance available for students who qualify. Registration forms are available in the guidance department at all Tempe Union High Schools—Tempe High, McClintock, Marcos De Niza, Corona del Sol, Desert Vista, Compadre Academy and Mountain Pointe. Mountain Pointe High School is located at 4201 E. Knox Rd., in the Ahwatukee. We want to put your photo on the cover of the Nearby News. Submit your digital photo to us by the 15th and, if we choose your image, not only will we put your photo on the cover but you’ll also win a gift certificate to a local restaurant. Good luck and happy shooting! Submission Requirements:

Step 1 If you’re like me, you have a lot of nail polish in a lot of colors and some just aren’t fun to wear anymore. Luckily, they make great enamel for this project and lend themselves to some very colorful designs. Aside from the usual solid blocks of color, my girls and I experimented with different techniques to make the paint mix together. We found that if the polish was applied thickly and then corresponding colors were dropped on top, the paint would start to mix together and make some really neat mosaic designs. We also found that we could take this approach one step further and after the colors had been applied, take a toothpick and swirl the polish together for a marbled finish. Another idea would be to apply small rhinestones to the wet polish for a more blingy approach to these keychains. Step 2 It’s important to let the washers dry for at least 24 hours or else the paint could get smudged during assembly. Once the paint is dry, turn over the largest washer and use either puffy paint or a permanent marker to write your holiday greetings to the gift recipient: “Happy Mother’s Day, Love Sara” for example. Step 3 The final step is as simple as loading the keyring the same way you would put a key on a keychain. I started with the largest of the washers and used it to prop open the keyring so as to avoid scratching the polish. I layered other washers on top of the largest one and then curled them all on at the same time. The washers make a pretty belllike sound when they knock together, which I call an added bonus. Pink Grapefruit Pound Cake Delicious, juicy pink grapefruit is in season from October through May, so this is a great month to try a sweet treat with a sensational citrus twist— the Pink Grapefruit Pound Cake. First about the cake. It really should have been called a 4-pound cake, because back in the 1700s, when someone baked up this invention, the original pound cake called for 1 pound each of butter, sugar, eggs and flour. Since then, the pound cake has slimmed down in ingredients and in size, and fresh citrus is often added to the basic mixture. While lemon is the darling of citrus when it comes to desserts, there is a sweet alternative in abundance right now in your store’s produce department. Pink grapefruit is juicy, sweet, inexpensive and large, which is why this recipe for

Pink Grapefruit Pound Cake is so perfect. While you’re enjoying the juicy fruit inside as a snack, the outside skin can be zested and blended into a moist, rich and dense cake. Then, you’ll take a few wedges, juice them up and add that to powdered sugar for a zesty citrus drizzle over top of the cake. I made one big mistake on my first go-around. I got a bit of the white pith under the outer skin in my zesting and it made my cake slightly bitter, so make sure that you grate only the pink peel. You can drizzle as much or as little of the icing as you like. Just double the icing ingredients for more sweetness on top. The second mistake I made was cutting into the cake before it cooled and set up. Patience has never been my virtue, but in this case waiting a bit promises the perfect slices.

Pink Grapefruit Pound Cake 1/2 cup (8 tablespoons) butter 1 small package (8 ounce) cream cheese 2 cups sugar 3 large eggs 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1 heaping tablespoon grapefruit rind (pink skin only, no white pith) 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 cup milk or cream 2 cups flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt Icing: 2 tablespoons grapefruit juice, strained 1 cups powdered sugar

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Butter a 9-by-5 inch loaf pan or a 9-inch spring form round pan. In a mixing bowl combine butter, cream cheese and sugar. Beat on high until light and fluff y. Add eggs, one at a time, blending after each addition. Add oil, grapefruit rind, vanilla and milk or cream, mixing well. In a separate bowl, mix together flour, baking powder and salt. Slowly add to wet

mixture, just to combine. Pour into baking pan and cook for 1 hour or until toothpick comes up clean. Do not overbake. Let cake cool for 15 minutes. Meanwhile make icing. In a medium bowl, combine grapefruit juice and powdered sugar, mixing well. If too thick, add more grapefruit juice, drops at a time. Transfer cooled cake to serving plate and drizzle with icing. Can be stored in refrigerator or at room temperature, wrapped well in plastic wrap, for several days. April 15, 2015

Customers can order groceries online at Walmart Customers who shop at the new Walmart Supercenter at Gateway Center and the San Tan Gateway North location at 1175 Arizona Ave. now have an added bonus: the option to order groceries online. The two Chandler locations offer the online program, called Walmart Grocery, which is available at www.walmart. com/grocery. “It’s been great,” said Daniel Lammes, store manager of the new Gateway Center store at 3460 W. Chandler, located on the northwest corner of Chandler and the Loop 101. The store opened in early March. “We’re getting about three to five orders a day, and the customers love it.” “It’s drawn a lot of attention. It’s a great way for people to stop and shop when they don’t have time to do it.” Walmart is testing the online program in markets throughout the country and at five Valley-area locations, including two stores in Mesa and one in Scottsdale. Walmart started the concept in San Jose, then initiated it in Denver, Bensonville, Arkansas, where the company is headquartered, and now Phoenix and Huntsville, Alabama. customer’s vehicle. The service requires a $30 minimum order. This service is all about customer convenience and saving them time, according to Ravi Jariwala, Walmart spokesman. Parents often need to take their children with them everywhere in the car, and include them in the time-consuming logistics of grocery shopping, Jariwala said. Parents place children in and out of car seats, put them in shopping carts, and walk around the store shopping for groceries, Jariwala said.

“What can take two hours now can be done in 5 to 10 minutes,” Jariwala said. “It’s really about choice. We know that some customers just don’t have the time. If I know I am driving by Walmart, I can phone in the order, let them know when I am arriving, call when I’m there and (my groceries) can be loaded within 5 minutes,” Jariwala said. “And the prices online are the same as in the store. There is no price markup.” Items in a single order will be separated and stored in an appropriate storage area. Ice cream will be loaded in a freezer, milk and yogurt in a refrigerated unit, and canned goods in an ambient area. “When you place the order, the items get pulled and collected,” Jariwala said. Jariwala said the service has worked well in test markets with customers sending in small orders barely over the minimum of $30 to larger orders, extending beyond several hundreds of dollars. “It is a test market and the hope is to expand our test market so that more stores are participating,” Jariwala said. Mike Kallner, executive vice president of leasing for RED Development, said in a prepared statement that Walmart Supercenter at Chandler Gateway “offers a new level of convenience and service for customers” in addition to new jobs. Chandler Gateway is a joint venture between RED Development and American Realty. Jill Jones, marketing director for Chandler Gateway, said that as a parent who lives in Chandler, she likes the idea. “I would love the convenience of being able to stop and pick up groceries without having to get out of the car with my kids.” The concept works well for stayat-home parents who are too busy with afterschool activities or prefer to spend their day with their children, and they don’t want to spend a lot of the daytime hours shopping, Lammes said. “It’s drawn a lot of attention. It’s a great way for people to stop and shop when they don’t have time to do it.” April 15, 2015
