Nestled on the coveted 400 block, this architectural masterpiece offers exceptional indoor and outdoor living spaces, along with an exclusive gated front yard featuring a private spool. The allure of this 3-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom residence is heightened by bi-folding walls of glass that unveil the lush, secluded exterior.

Encompassing approximately 2,104 square feet of meticulously designed space, bathed in natural light, the home showcases clean architectural lines and sophisticated finishes. The contemporary yet inviting ambiance is accentuated by a palette of wood, stone, and steel, complemented by European oak floors, marble, and brick accents.

Dear Friends,

Wow, it’s February. I guess it’s time to remove the tree; my wife says leave it. The year will go by fast; why bother taking it down, then putting it away just to pull it out again? She can’t help her tree philosophy as she was influenced indelibly by her childhood friend Suzanne Lloyd, raised by her grandfather Harold Lloyd (silent screen star, move pioneer) who kept a Christmas tree up 24/7 x12 that became quite famous in mid-20th century media at holiday time. By the way, it was a real tree, floor to ceiling, with wired branches and some sort of spray preservative for fire protection. The family just kept adding ornaments for decades! See vintage photo circa 1960.

On that note, the Bay Window February issue shares some final images of 2023 holiday revelers over Christmas and the New Year celebrations. Memories made, time to move on for the perfect Valentine dinner at your Club. Both the BBC and NBCC welcome members for the annual February 14th experience on the coast. Of course, celebration is our mantra. We believe every day should come with a dose of great fun. On the way to February 14th, plan on enjoying Martin Luther King Jr. Day January 15th, Groundhog Day February 2nd, Chinese New Year 4722 (Year of the Dragon…that’s lucky) on February 10th, and Lincoln’s Birthday on the 12th. And for our Catholic friends, lent begins with Ash Wednesday on February 14th too. Do not give up chocolate this year. And don’t forget Super Bowl parties on Sunday, February 11 at both Balboay Bay Club and Newport Beach County Club.

Suzanne Lloyd at approximately 8 years old with grandfather Harold Lloyd circa 1960.

Our February issue features a special Style 2024 report from fashion editor Carole Pickup. Experience a family dining outing at the BBC’s Members Grill for a Saturday brunch from contributing writer Lana Sills. Writer Matt Morrison delivers our February feature on the City of Newport Beach award-winning float entry in the 135th Rose Parade. Riding high on the float were four past Rose Queens including our own Anne Wortmann, wife of BBC Board of Governors Chairman John Wortmann. Anne was crowned in 1976, the Bi-Centennial Queen. She hasn’t aged a day. Don’t believe me? Just look!

Robin Shelton, GM at NBCC, is very busy this month preparing the club and course for the upcoming 2024 Hoag Classic. The champions golf tournament will be watched by enthusiasts worldwide. Significant proceeds benefit local charity including the important community health care provided by Hoag Hospital. Contributor Ashley Ryan submits excellent stories on club life, including golf, social activities and member profiles. Be sure to read club pro Carlo’s Golf Tips and the ever-popular dining column on the latest cuisine at NBCC.

Finally, make that dinner reservation for Valentine’s. Chocolates, champagne and caviar are romance added value. What matters most is the love connection – be it with husband or wife, children or friends. Words matter – choose carefully, open your heart.

As it says on our February cover, “Love is in the air (and water) at the BBC and NBCC.”

THE SPIRIT OF THE SEASON LINGERS INTO FEBRUARY AT BALBOA BAY CLUB

GINO STUMPO

Stumpo Wealth Management Group

Have you ever thought about the advantages of collaborating with a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM? Exploring the benefits of partnering with a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM prompts consideration of other financial professionals in your life, including a tax professional, who serves a distinctly different role. It’s important to note the diversity among tax professionals, which prompts the crucial distinction between a tax preparer and a tax advisor, as the latter not only manages tax returns but also provides valuable insights for minimizing both current and future taxes. Dispelling the misconception that tax planning is a mere document-gathering process is essential; it involves a proactive analysis of future cash flow, much like assembling a puzzle.

Collaborating seamlessly with a financial advisor, like Gino Stumpo, and your tax professional, is vital for comprehensive, long-term planning. Gino’s expertise, as recognized by Forbes “Best-In-State Wealth Advisor in California” 2019 through 2023, makes him the ideal partner for this journey. The Forbes rating is compiled by SHOOK Research and awarded annually in April based on information from a 12-month period ending June of the prior year. Eligibility is based on quantitative factors and is not necessarily related to the quality of the investment advice. “I believe a financial concierge understands managing wealth goes beyond numbers and investments,” says Gino.

Approaching the impending tax season, Gino advocates open discussions with both clients and their tax professionals. Delving into strategic considerations like a Roth IRA conversion can be prudent for future tax scenarios. Now is the opportune moment to assess your financial team

and ensure you’re in capable hands. To ensure you’re partnered with the right professionals, let Stumpo Wealth Management optimize your wealth with precision and harmony.

Enjoy a complimentary consultation for a thorough assessment of your financial landscape, because crafting a bespoke financial strategy tailored to your unique situation is Gino’s top priority. UBS offices are available for consultations. Your financial goals deserve a synchronized approach, and Stumpo Wealth Management is there to make it happen.

Dear BBC Members,

February is of course, the month of love and who doesn’t love love? This month there is plenty to love at the club as we enjoy this winter season.

To help all of you still holding on to that New Year’s resolution we have great trainers on staff to help you meet your fitness goals, pickleball and basketball drop-in times, yoga, and of course great treatments available in the spa to help with your recovery. For more information on fitness options stop by the fitness center to see Ashley and Anthony in our recreation department. Don’t forget about self-care, we have a wide range of massage options that will help soothe sore muscles, de-stress and relax you. But don’t take my word for it, stop by the Spa or call 949-630-4772 and schedule a treatment yourself!

The men’s and women’s spas are a great way to shake off some of that winter chill, enjoy a relaxing dip in the hot tub, decompress in the wet or dry sauna and enjoy a good book by the fireplace. Be sure to top off your day at the club by stopping by Members Grill to see friends old and new.

If you’re looking for events then you’re in luck! This month our events include Super Bowl viewing in Members Grill on February 11th. Make plans to join us as everyone is a winner in Members Grill. Be sure to check local listings for game time. Cotillion is in full swing on February 7th, Sweetheart Bingo on the 8th, and of course Valentine’s Dinner on the 14th! Make your reservations early for these and all our great February events.

Lastly, thank you again to all our members that supported the Boat Parade this past holiday season. We received such great feedback from the drone shows, had several BBC Marina boats in the parade, and hosted hundreds of members and guests each night of the parade. This past month the 115th Annual Boat Parade and Ring of Lights winners were honored at a special reception, and it was great to see the support continue as there were so many of our members in attendance and showing their love of community.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Love and Football Compete for your Attention

FROM VALENTINE’S DINING IN MEMBERS GRILL TO THE SUPERBOWL CELEBRATION, FEBRUARY IS FULL OF EVENTS

As January fades away in our memories, February steps into the spotlight, bringing with it a unique charm and the promise of renewal. Often celebrated as the month of love, February is not only the shortest month of the year, but also a canvas for various celebrations and reflections.

At the heart of February lies the celebration of love with Valentine’s Day, a day dedicated to expressing affection and appreciation for those dear to us. The air is filled with the sweet notes of romance, and gestures of love take center stage. It’s not just about romantic love; February is also an opportune time to cherish and strengthen friendships. Join us at Members Grill for a decadent three-course meal or celebrate at Bingo or Bunco.

February wears many hats, catering to a diverse range of celebrations. The Super Bowl creates a buzz of excitement among sports enthusiasts, bringing people together for an evening of camaraderie and competition. Presidents’ Day honors the leaders who have shaped the nation, reminding us of the importance of leadership and unity. Simultaneously, during American Heart Month, we build bridges of understanding and appreciation. Come celebrate the big game day at Members Grill with all-day happy hour specials.

With March waiting in the wings, February acts as a prelude to the arrival of spring. The days gradually lengthen and the promise of renewal hangs in the air. As we pass through the brisk days of February, let’s embrace the multifaceted nature of this month. Whether it’s expressing love, celebrating achievements or focusing on health, February encourages us to live intentionally. As we bid farewell to winter, let’s welcome the approaching spring with open hearts, ready for the new season and new beginnings that lie ahead.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to update your BBC vehicle decals to the 75th anniversary ones, please stop by the membership offices with your DMV registration for updated ones!

Please join me in welcoming our new members:

LYNDOL AND DIANA COOK:

“We look forward to continuing over 46 years of enjoyment at BBC as family members of Rena Glenn Kerr, Lyndol’s mother, who was a Silver Member from 1977 until her passing in 2023 at 104 years. From our early days in the BBC pool with our small children to celebrating Rena’s 100th birthday, BBC has been an integral part of our life. Here’s to many more years of enjoyment with old friends and the new friends we hope to meet.”

Brunch by the Bay

MAKE IT A RITUAL WEEKEND MORNING TREAT IN MEMBERS GRILL

In the Members Grill the sun always seems to be shining off the Newport Harbor and all seems well…especially at Brunch on a Saturday and Sunday. There are a number of reasons to have Brunch at Members Grill on the weekend. There is the openness and comfort, then the very efficient staff and inviting bar, and let’s not forget the corned beef hash and eggs and scrumptious French toast. But the best reason to go is Chef Prabeen’s revamped menu and my favorite dishes; the Savory Breakfast BBC Bowl and the spicy Chili Verde Omelet. A luscious selection of Avocado Toast, a scrumptious Chinese Chicken Salad and the BBC Power Burger alongside a Bacon Bloody Mary makes this the popular Newport Brunch hangout. It’s local coastal food that reflects the culinary spirit of Newport Beach. Shrimp Tacos, Omelets, griddled MG Favorites, Margaritas while gathering with family and friends for a relaxing Brunch. Members Grill

we’ve covered the basic types of cooked eggs, you might be ready to branch out. Think fried eggs on avocado toast or learn to make your own fresh pasta with simple flour and eggs. If you really want to be adventurous, try making Shakshuka. No matter how you crack them, eggs are simply the perfect food staple.

is rooted in tradition with seasonal ingredients while you soak up harbor views with an Apple Cider Margarita in hand. I’m usually on Team Pancakes pouring a good amount of maple syrup and hanging out with a generous mug of coffee.

No matter where you are in the world, there is sure to be a delicious breakfast waiting for you! In Japan, a common breakfast is rice with miso soup and pickled vegetables. In China, congee (a rice porridge) is popular, and served with pickled greens, pork and peanuts. In Mexico, Huevos Rancheros are a favorite breakfast food. Breakfast has an interesting history that spans centuries and different cultures. From the simple breads of ancient Rome to the rich feasts of medieval Europe, to today’s modern convenience foods, breakfast has evolved into something bigger than itself. One thing remains constant; it’s a vital part of our everyday lives. It helps us start our day on the right foot and helps us focus and concentrate throughout the day and is a great way to bond with family and friends over a shared meal.

On Super Bowl Sunday, choose your Pint or Moody. Choose your On Draft Lager or IPA (my favorite is “Drink this or the Bees Die Honey Ale”...love the name!). And choose from housemade Potato Chips and Caramelized Onion Dip, Soft Pretzels with Beer Cheese Sauce and Spicy Chicken Wings to get you through the game.

And, don’t forget to have a Bagel and Bellini to toast the upcoming Valentine’s Day.

Good morning, foodies and club members! Welcome to your new weekend ritual.

VALENTINE EVENTS FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, and if you haven’t made your plans yet and are reading this article, you might be feeling like you’ve missed the opportunity to do something wonderful with your special person, or for yourself during this season of celebrating love. The good news is that there are all sorts of wonderful ways to celebrate right here at the Bay Club.

If you are looking for that romantic time away from the kids, call the Kid’s Club and make a reservation so that you can enjoy some time alone

at the Member’s Grill or A+O. While you enjoy the wonderful special menus at the on-property restaurants, your kids will be expertly taken care of by the wonderful Kid’s Club staff. After dinner, your kids will be ready for an early bedtime after all of the fun and activity.

If being outdoors is more for you, call ahead to the Members Grill and order a charcuterie board to-go (you can thank me later) and bring it down to the member’s beach. Sitting and relaxing on the beach under a blanket with a drink in hand and

your toes in the sand – what could be more romantic? If you want to keep your feet clean, however, you could rent a Duffy for a romantic ride through the harbor. Enjoy a beautiful sunset out on the water, glass of champagne in hand, all of which can be arranged through the recreation team.

Gift giving has evolved in recent times to be more about experiences instead of items. The Bay Club provides exactly these types of opportunities for Valentine’s Day as well. Booking a hotel room overlooking the bay would be the perfect end to a night spent at the restaurants here at the Club and Resort. The exceptional resort team can accommodate practically any request to make the experience special for you and your loved one. Perhaps, you could even take advantage of the shuttles and our wonderful valet staff that drive them to go to a dinner at one of the wonderful restaurants nearby before returning to A+O for a nightcap and then to your room. There are few experiences more special than letting the sun wake you as it glistens on the water instead of an alarm clock.

The other experience well worth your consideration is at the Balboa Bay Spa. The Spa has a full menu of massage services, sure to relax and remove all cares of the outside world. The massage itself, though, is really just the beginning. As anyone who has taken full advantage of the Spa would tell you, the lounges, steam rooms and saunas are truly unrivaled.

What we have here in Newport Beach, that most around the rest of the country, many of whom are blanketed in snow this time of year, is sunshine. Taking a little time away from work to sit and relax in the newly resurfaced jacuzzi on the member’s pool deck while basking in the sunshine that we are so blessed to have this time of year could be the best way to spend your time on Valentine’s Day.

Here's hoping that you get to enjoy all that the Club has to offer during this wonderful time of year, as we celebrate love, and all year round.

INSIDE THE RARIFIED WORLD OF NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB

Dear NBCC Members,

As we reflect on 2023, there are a number of really special events and innovations that happened at the club. We try to deliver both a great member experience and a great employee experience. One of the most special concepts that we created last year was a program for our employees called True North.

True North is a leadership development program for our employees to help them with career growth and leadership training. This program is designed for those who are exploring a career in hospitality; we expose them to different types of hospitality environments and leadership lessons.

Each month, we visit another country club, city club, golf club, hotel, restaurant or other hospitality enterprise. As a part of our monthly gathering, there are six elements, including:

1. A leadership discussion at NBCC

2. A book club discussion on the monthly reading (our last two books have been “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie and “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership” by John C. Maxwell)

3. A facility tour of another local club/hotel/etc.

4. A leadership lesson from the general manager of the property that is toured

5. Lunch at the location

6. A discussion of hospitality-focused strengths from the visit

This program is open to any employee who has worked at the club for at least one year, meets a requirement of minimum hours worked and completes an application for the program.

It has been an absolute blast to try and help develop the next generation of leaders in hospitality and expose them to new ideas and concepts. The program has been such a success, we’ve already launched a second, more advanced level of True North for supervisors and managers who know they want a career in clubs and hospitality.

I am grateful that we get to work alongside some incredible people—and this program is helping us develop and grow leaders for both the short term and long term, at NBCC and in the hospitality realm as a whole. It has been one of the most special programs of 2023.

GOLF SHOP ASSOCIATE CAMERON LEE HAS LONG BEEN INTERESTED IN THE INS AND OUTS OF THE GAME.

Cameron Lee’s education on the golf course came at an early age, as she has been playing since she was a kid. But her experience doesn’t end there.

“Working in the golf industry is something I was always interested in,” Lee explains. “Towards the end of college, I

“TOWARDS THE END OF COLLEGE, I PLAYED IN THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA WOMEN’S AMATEUR [CHAMPIONSHIP] TOURNAMENT AT NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB, AND I WAS AMAZED BY THE SCENERY AND WELCOMING ATMOSPHERE OF THE CLUB.”

played in the Southern California Women’s Amateur [Championship] tournament at Newport Beach Country Club, and I was amazed by the scenery and welcoming atmosphere of the club. I’ve always known that NBCC was a prestigious club, but getting the players’ experience sparked my interest in working here.”

Lee finished her degree in global studies at the University of California, Irvine, where she was also a student athlete.

In fact, she played Division I golf all throughout college, first at San Diego State University before transferring to Orange County. She also worked as a range house attendant and pro shop associate at Tustin Ranch Golf Club before graduating, then took a position as a data analyst before landing at NBCC in October 2023.

In her current role, Lee says her top priority is to guarantee that the club’s members have a seamless experience both inside and outside of the golf shop. She also receives inventory, ships items to vendors, delivers items to members, reorganizes the products in the pro shop and works alongside Corinne Flynn, buyer/ merchandiser for NBCC, to ensure that members find apparel they look and feel good in. This also involves communicating with sales representatives from brands like Adidas, Ralph Lauren and G/FORE to special order items that the club doesn’t carry.

But her work extends beyond the shop as well, as Lee often assists in golf services, helping reserve tee times for members and setting up tournaments that take place at the club.

“The best thing about working at NBCC is the relationships I’ve been able to form with members,” Lee notes. “I’m amazed at how kind the members are to our staff. I’m so lucky to be surrounded by members like ours, because they motivate us to work harder and create a better culture around the club.”

Aside from getting to assist the members, Lee enjoys the staff she has around her. “The golf staff has been so willing to step in and help me learn, which has made my transition into a new job really enjoyable. The entire NBCC staff as a whole creates a positive work environment that motivates me to better myself.”

As she continues to explore the different branches available in the golf industry, Lee says she’s just devouring all of the knowledge. “At the moment, I’m striving to learn everything I can about the different aspects of the golf industry,” she explains. “I hope that I narrow my area of interest soon so I can focus on growing my career in that area—whether it’s in merchandise, golf instruction or operations.”

Stop in to the pro shop to say hi or learn more about her love for golf.

The Long and Short of It

CARLO

AT NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB, DETAILS THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SHORT GAME.

When you’re on the green, the pressure is on. But two things that can make all the difference when you’re trying to finish out the hole with ease are your short-game techniques and your confidence. Both of these come together, intertwining to shape the success of your golf game.

“Golfers with efficient short-game skills can play with more confidence,” says Carlo Borunda, the director of instruction at Newport Beach Country Club. “This positive mindset can have a significant impact on their ability to play well and enjoy the game.”

Here, Borunda reveals how you can improve your short game and ensure success on the course.

BAY WINDOW: How can making your short game more efficient improve your

overall game?

CARLO BORUNDA: If a golfer wishes to consistently shoot lower scores, they must be able to execute accurate shots from around the green. The average golfer will miss the green with their approach shot at least half of the time while playing an 18-hole round. Being able to hit an effective shot from these various locations encourages you to be more aggressive with your approach shot. A more precise shot will result in lower scores and a better experience every time you play the game.

BW: What are some tips for improving your short game?

CB: The first step to improving your short game is to learn how to control your contact with the golf ball. This is achieved by establishing better balance, which should

favor your lead leg throughout the golf swing. Practice hitting shorter shots until you can maintain balance on your lead foot. Another step to improving is to learn how to solve the different types of shots a golfer will face around the putting green. A lower lofted club, such as an 8-iron or 4-hybrid, is an ideal choice when your golf ball is close to the green, but the hole is on the far side. A pitching wedge can be the perfect club selection when you have plenty of green to work with and need a slightly higher trajectory to cover the fringe or bunker. Your most lofted wedge is best suited for the higher shots that also need more backspin.

BW: Should your grip be tight or relaxed?

CB: Unlike a full swing where your grip pressure needs to be consistently firm, the more delicate shots around the green need varying

A simple yet effective drill to develop better balance at impact is to practice with your trail foot raised off the ground.

sticks are useful instruments for determining your aim and ball position. They can also help you become more conscious of your wrist activity, which should be kept to a minimum while chipping.

degrees of grip pressure. Hold onto the golf club with a light amount of pressure—similar to your putting grip—for the shorter distance shots. Your grip needs to be at its firmest when your golf ball is in thicker grass or in a plugged lie in a sand bunker.

BW: What is the proper posture for improving the short game?

CB: Your normal, full swing posture is best when executing a pitch shot from different distances around the green. Standing more upright is suitable for chip shots as this posture provides a stable base and promotes the straighter swing plane needed for these lower flighted golf shots. Add more knee bend when

trying to produce a higher flighted shot from the rough or green-side bunker.

BW: Which shots require more body rotation?

CB: Body rotation is required when your golf ball is in a sand bunker or when executing longer pitch shots. These swings typically have more swing speed; therefore, we need to support the club’s momentum with the rotation from our hips and torso. Because body rotation involves transferring weight, it can also lessen the likelihood of hitting behind the ball.

BW: How does distance control play a role in improving the short game?

CB: Being able to dictate the distance the golf

ball travels in the air and how much it rolls once it lands is essential to becoming a high level golfer. All of your short-game shots will improve once you have a better sense of distance. Your choice of golf club, the length of your backswing and the speed of your golf swing all play an integral part in controlling how far your golf ball travels.

BW: Are there any drills or practice techniques golfers can use to improve?

CB: As you practice, use your phone to video yourself. The visuals will aid you in perfecting your setup and confirm the length of your backswing. Place a tee or ball marker on the green where you want the golf ball to land, and focus on this location while practicing. Use the ball’s position in your stance to control the trajectory. Expect a lower-flighted shot when the golf ball is placed back in your stance or in front of your right foot (for a right-handed golfer). The opposite is true when the golf ball is placed in front of your left foot. Experiment with how much wrist hinge you are using for the various shots near the green. You will discover that utilizing less movement from the wrists will result in improved club face control and contact with the golf ball. This is also a great way to minimize club head speed for more delicate shots.

BW: What types of technology, training aids or equipment can be beneficial when you want to improve your short game?

CB: Swing speed, tempo and length of swing are important skills to hone when trying to create a consistent short-game swing. Swing speed is one of the most important aspects of controlling the carry distance of the golf ball. An inexpensive launch monitor can confirm the club head speed you are using. A device like the deWiz Golf watch can assist you in monitoring the tempo and length of your swing. Practicing with the Lag Shot Wedge swing trainer will ingrain a smoother pitching motion. Your wedges are among the most … utilized clubs in your golf bag. Depending on your playing and practice patterns, golfers should replace their wedges every 12 to 18 months. Replacing your grips every six to 12 months is a good investment, especially if you don’t wear a golf glove. Given how essential the spin and roll of the golf ball are to your score, it’s advisable to use a new ball every round.

BW: Anything else to add?

CB: The best players know how important it is to practice around the putting green in order to sharpen their short-game technique. Continue to spend time developing your confidence in this area of the game, and I guarantee your scores will improve in the coming year.

Adjust your posture for different types of short game shots. A more upright stance is best for chipping, while more knee flex is ideal in the sand.

Decadent Dessert

THIS VALENTINE’S DAY, MAKE YOUR LOVED ONES THE CHOCOLATE DISH OF THEIR DREAMS.

Some of the most popular items to enjoy on Valentine’s Day include a nice bottle of red wine, strawberries and caviar, given their aphrodisiacal qualities.

“Eating fulfills a primal need associated with pleasure, and certain foods contain chemicals associated with the pleasure centers in the brain,” says Donovan Kolanek, pastry chef at Newport Beach Country Club. “Every culture has their own version of foods that supposedly make one more amorous:

ginseng from China, saffron from the Middle East, oysters from the Roman Empire.”

But, in America, there is one ingredient that stands out as a symbol of the day. “Of all the aphrodisiacs, no one can argue that chocolate and Valentine’s Day are a perfect match. Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, herself would agree,” Kolanek notes. “Chocolate’s velvety sweet richness evokes a warm sensual feeling, and what better way to enjoy that richness than warm chocolate fondue. By combining a few ingredients and

items for dipping, you have a playful dessert to share with your loved ones.”

Fondue is an exciting option to prepare for a significant other, beloved family member or dear friend this Valentine’s Day. Whether it’s an early-morning option before work or school or the final dish to complete the perfect romantic meal, this interactive and decadent dessert is sure to paint a smile on anyone’s face.

Kolanek suggests preparing a platter of dipping items, such as strawberries, bananas, pieces of poundcake, miniature brownies, marshmallows, rice crispy treats or even cheesecake bites; the items can also be easily customized to accommodate dietary restrictions like gluten intolerance.

As a final tip, Kolanek adds, “I like to flavor the fondue with a splash of liqueur, like Grand Marnier, Amaretto or Chambord. I hope you have a happy Valentine’s Day and share some chocolate with the ones you love.”

CHOCOLATE FONDUE

Servings: 4-6

16 ounces heavy cream

1 ounce liqueur of your choice (optional) 12 ounces dark chocolate, chopped

Prepare various items (like fruit or marshmallows) for dipping on a platter with a bowl in the middle to hold the fondue. Combine the heavy cream and liqueur, then bring to a boil. Pour mixture over the chocolate, wait 30 seconds, then whisk until smooth. Pour into dipping bowl in center of platter and serve immediately, with long skewers or forks. If the fondue gets cold, heat in a microwave for 30-second intervals until fluid again.

Fun With the Whole Family

NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB MEMBERS MARK AND DANA SUSSON SHARE WHAT THEY DO IN THEIR SPARE TIME, THEIR IDEA OF PERFECT HAPPINESS AND THEIR LOVE FOR PASTA NIGHT.

Every so often, the editors of Bay Window send out a questionnaire to one of the esteemed members of an International Bay Clubs property to gain some insight into his or her life. These questions allow our readers to learn something new about old friends, or discover somebody they have not met before. For this issue, we’re getting to know Newport Beach Country Club members Mark and Dana Susson.

BAY WINDOW: Where are you from and how did you end up in Newport Beach?

MARK AND DANA SUSSON: Dana was born and raised in Anaheim, graduated from Savanna High School and worked throughout college at Disneyland as a ride operator. Mark was born and raised in Philadelphia (go Birds, Sixers and Phillies!). He moved to Newport Beach with his parents in 1968 and graduated from Corona del Mar High School. We graduated from UC Irvine in 1976; both attended Loyola Law School and graduated in 1979, the same year we were also married.

BW: What do you do for a living?

M&DS: We are both attorneys. Dana handled litigation matters, representing doctors and hospitals for her 30-plus-year career and now

works as an arbitrator in cases against Kaiser. Mark handles litigation matters for a variety of insurance carriers, for self-insured companies and for severely injured individuals.

BW: What is your family’s favorite event at NBCC?

M&DS: We, along with our kids and grandkids, LOVE Pasta Night. We go as often as we can as a family and always have a great time. We will continue this tradition indefinitely.

BW: What do you like to do in your spare time?

M&DS: Mark is an amateur photographer and, for many years, has enjoyed taking photos for NBCC during the Hoag Classic (formerly the Toshiba Classic). Dana is a knitter and also loves to cook and spend as much time as possible with kids and grandkids. We also enjoy traveling— sometimes with our kids and grandkids, sometimes with friends and sometimes just the two of us. We love to mark special occasions, such as birthdays or anniversaries, with a fun trip.

BW: What is the best part about living in Orange County?

M&DS: We love living in Newport Beach. We raised our kids in Irvine and loved living there as well, but Newport better fits our needs

now. The best part of living here is having our children (and their spouses) and grandchildren close by. We all live within a several-mile radius, which allows for lots of fun and making memories. We all enjoy spending time together outside at pools and parks as well as making meals together. Watching our grandchildren grow and thrive is our greatest pleasure and joy. We are happy for and proud of the adults our children and their spouses have become and the love and respect they show us. We try to always return that love and respect.

BW: How do you spend your weekends?

M&DS: Mark can usually be found at NBCC on Saturday mornings starting at 8:10 a.m., playing golf first and then having lunch with his brother, David, and the rest of his foursome. It is the highlight of his week. He typically spends the remainder of the weekend with family or friends, just enjoying the company and companionship. Dana usually spends Saturday mornings with some combination of our five grandchildren, ages 5 and under, or working on a myriad of home projects.

BW: What is your greatest accomplishment?

M&DS: We have worked hard throughout our 44-year marriage to build a happy, meaningful and financially secure life. We feel that we have accomplished this and look ahead to continuing to enjoy what comes from these efforts.

BW: What is your idea of perfect happiness?

M&DS: We try to be happiest at whatever place and time that we find ourselves in. We both feel extremely fortunate to be where we are in our lives right now. We have amazing children, including their spouses, and five wonderful grandchildren who we couldn’t love more. We have great extended family around us and close friends to share our lives with. We never forget how fortunate we are. As we have grown older (and older!) we have learned that finding happiness is pretty simple—just surround yourself with those you love, respect and admire. And take frequent trips to Hawaii.

Playing It Smart

WITH THESE TIPS FROM BIANCA GILLETT, DIRECTOR OF FITNESS AND RECREATION AT NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB, LEARN HOW TO STAY MORE DISCIPLINED WITH YOUR GOALS.

Whether you’re still focused on New Year’s resolutions or you’re setting new milestones for yourself this month, stay disciplined by committing to the action steps that are necessary to reach your goals.

“Robin, our general manager at NBCC, leads weekly meetings with all the directors and upper management, and lately [he] has been talking about Shane Battier, a former NBA player and now professional speaker, and his mindset around discipline and leadership,” says Bianca Gillett, director of fitness and recreation at Newport Beach Country Club. “A quote Robin shared with us last week works beautifully for this: ‘Don’t fail the plan. Let the plan fail you.’ Aka, don’t … quit on the action steps.”

According to Gillett, the best thing you can do to reach your goals is to stay

consistent, track your progress and adjust your plan if you’re not seeing the results you were hoping for. “Adjusting the plan is never a problem—that is actually very healthy. But quitting on the plan will most often lead to failure,” she notes.

Build positive habits and keep them consistent for three to 12 months to turn it all into a lifestyle. When you reach the point where it is more of a passion than a pastime, you’ll already be healthy and happy rather than just striving for it. And when you’re feeling content in your routine, you won’t want to give it up.

It’s important to keep both your head and your body in the game though. “You have to be mentally disciplined to adhere to your action steps, but also physically disciplined to get your workouts and recovery practices in,” Gillett says.

Mindset is also a major player when

REACHING YOUR GOALS

Here are Bianca Gillett’s tips for finding success in 2024.

1. Set SMART Goals: Make sure that each and every milestone you set is specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-based.

2. Find an Accountability Buddy: Get a friend to help you stay on track. “Someone who will be brutally accountable is best, not someone who will let you slide,” Gillett notes. She says you can also add a wager to it to inspire discipline.

3. Learn to Love the Journey: Don’t let your goals feel like a chore. Instead, find a system that works for you and focus on the results so that you can turn it into a lifestyle.

it comes to reaching your goals. One of the most important things you can do is think about your motivation, or, as Gillett calls it, remember the “why” behind it. “It needs to be something that really matters to you—something that has a stronger feeling or attachment [to it]. … Because there will be times when you won’t have the motivation to eat right or work out, so remembering your ‘why’ is the kick you need to stay consistent.”

She says it’s also important to not always pay attention to your feelings. “True discipline happens when you make the right choice, even when it’s the choice you don’t want,” she explains. You may feel like eating unhealthy foods, thinking it will make you ‘feel better,’ but if you push past that and make the right choice, you’ll feel better physically, stay consistent and reach your goals to become a happier, healthier person.

In-Style 2024

BBC, NBCC AND EAGLE FOUR MODELS SHOW OFF THE LATEST FASHION FROM THE BAYFRONT BOUTIQUE IN THE BALBOA BAY RESORT AND SPA BOUTIQUE IN THE BALBOA BAY CLUB

Green is the color for 2024. All shades of green from light and pale to dark and forest green. Designers are calling green the “It Color” of the year. If you are a fashion watcher, take a look at what is appearing on celebs on the award shows along with displays in the magazines and online. Green is the “money” color.

The style radar in 2024 is trending toward a contemporary, preppy look, always popular as classic fashion for both men and women. Tailored separates this season will be softer, less formal and rigid, yet still in the prep mode. Coming back big time are blazers for gents and ladies, often combined with full or pleated trousers. The look is definitely tailored, but more laid back. Collared shirts with pointed

ends are in style. T-shirts are still popular, yet the dress shirt, especially the crisp starched white men’s shirt (for men and women) is a sought-after fashion statement. Then add a cotton or cashmere (especially in this cold California winter) crew or V-neck sweater over the white shirt and finalize the look with a camelhair blazer over crème gaberdine slacks.

The puffer jacket remains a fashion style. Either the full jacket or the vest are great for year-round comfort, again especially to take off the chill when needed. The puffers can be very stylish, some quite costly and luxurious.

On the subject of luxury, the pursuit of fabulous fashion grows every year. Fabulous fashion accessories can be found in most shops and online, and of course here in the Bayfront Boutique at Balboa Bay Resort. Statement

jewelry, unique designs; big black framed Hollywood sunglasses in homage to designers such as Chanel, Dior, and De la Renta are taking over the popular aviators with the wire frames.

Say goodbye to leggings and crocs! Yes, you can still enjoy them, but think about adding a refresh to your look. Skintight pants are being overtaken by wide slacks for gals, and the guys too, but to a lesser extent. Young men are still into painted-on pants. It’s the country-western cowboy look meets rock star fashion and young Hollywood male sex appeal.

On that note, superstar Usher, who will front the 2024 Half Time Show at the Super Bowl has become a male fashion trend setter choosing to wear no shirt, no socks, (no underwear too?) only a jacket open to show chest and pants. The

trend is exploding. First men lost the necktie with a jacket, and now the shirt too!

Fabrics for women this year will feature larger prints, especially florals and natureoriented design elements. Super bold patterns and large geometric prints are more attractive on tall women, and larger women too who are comfortable carrying bold design. Smaller gals, under 5’4” are advised to stay away from the large, bold prints. Softer flowing florals and small prints are more flattering.

NEWPORT BEACH DAZZLES MILLIONS OF TV VIEWERS WITH THE VISIT

NEWPORT BEACH 2024 ROSE PARADE FLOAT

The break of dawn New Year’s Day delivered Anne Wortmann’s one holiday wish; clear skies for the Tournament of Roses Parade. She was already up, well before sunrise, dressed & ready to ride. It was the sixth time she was featured on a float amid the splendor of the event known as America’s New Year celebration.

Before that, 18 years earlier in 2006, her ride on a float representing Newport Beach was dampened by a cold, hard-driving downpour. The ‘show’ went on and like other parade participants, a shivering Anne made the best of waving to the crowd from under a rainsplashed umbrella. Fortunately, that was not the case this year, as some 700,000 fans lined the Rose Parade route.

“A glorious day, as it usually is,” Anne points out. “It was a little bit cold, but at least it wasn’t raining.”

The first time she rode in the parade was last century when the teenaged Anne Martin was herself the belle of the ball – the 1976 Rose Queen. At the outset of America’s bicentennial year, it was a patriotic jolt of extra special to be front and center on the first day of a year-long national celebration.

On that day, songstress Kate Smith of ‘God Bless America’ fame was the Grand Marshall. UCLA thumped top-ranked Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, Dick Vermeil was the Bruin coach, quarterback John Sciarra was the MVP. Meantime, Rose Queen Anne Martin was extra thrilled to be seated behind Donnie & Marie Osmond at the football game.

Gerald Ford was President, Jimmy Carter would be elected. Elvis belted out ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic’ louder than ever, and Bruce Jenner was the world’s greatest athlete. 1976 was a big year, wrapped in red, white, and blue. Of all the great bicentennial celebrations around the country, the Tournament of Roses rolled out first.

Over the years, Anne has returned to ride on floats as an honored guest several more times. This year it was the latest Visit Newport Beach entry “Jingle on The Waves,” an extraordinary tribute tying the Visit Newport Beach Boat Parade with its roots in the Pasadena spectacle that began in 1880.

Its a nice slice of history to take note of. The boat parade in the early 1900s took its inspiration from the Tournament of Roses. Many of the earliest inhabitants in sparsely populated Orange County matriculated to the waterfront from Pasadena. In that sense, she’s

always been Newport’s big sister city.

Reaffirming that bond this year has been a focus of the City of Newport Beach and its tourism arm, Visit Newport Beach, headed by Gary Sherwin. Along with coordinator Ashley Johnson, the plan in development for many months was executed with precision straight through the new year.

“Our attitude at the outset was ‘go big or go home,’” Mr. Sherwin said, “and it still far exceeded anything I could imagine.”

The float rolled out in five segments depicting landmarks of the Newport Harbor in Christmas Boat Parade decor. It was the longest float in the parade at 165 feet long. Anne Wortmann and a small sorority of former Rose Queens now living in Newport Beach rode atop as guests of honor, accompanied by Sherwin and Johnson.

Former queens Nancy Skinner (’52), Ann Hall (’57), and Robin Sanders (’75) joined Wortmann (’76) on the record-setting float that was bestowed with the prestigious ‘Extraordinaire Award’ by the Tournament of Roses panel.

The prize was a prominent distinction and maybe the most gratifying aspect for Sherwin and all participants. The most rewarding aspect,

though, is likely the prominent worldwide exposure the float received on the multinetwork coverage.

“We were featured in a good position early in the parade, we had a compelling Newport Beach story, the Extraordinaire Award, and the attention of the broadcast network,” Sherwin noted. “It was kind of a comeback for us.”

For Anne Wortmann, it was a fresh trip down memory lane with a familiar coat of nostalgia. Before she was an original member of the LA Rams cheerleading squad, the ‘Embraceable Ewes’ (hey, it was the late ’70s), married John Wortmann, raised their family in Newport Beach while taking on leadership roles as members of the Balboa Bay Club, Anne recalls the incredible commitment she undertook as a member of the Rose Court. Her selection as queen took place after meeting with decision makers on a visit to the BBC. She talks about the many personal appearances in the months leading up to New Year’s, often 2-3 stops a day, at many, many clubs, civic events, and school activities all over Southern California.

The commitment remains strong with every parade appearance. The same crew of Rose Queens repped the Rose Parade a few weeks earlier in the 2023 Newport Beach Holiday

Boat Parade. In a holiday cross-promotion, this year’s Rose Queen Naomi Stillitano and the 2024 Court were afloat in the boat parade as well.

The lead-up to the new year’s event was a whirlwind for the Newport Beach contingent. They spent the weekend near the parade route, sharing a hotel with ‘the whole state of Michigan.’ The judging process was an earlymorning Saturday and most-of-the-day dress rehearsal at the float staging site in Irwindale.

Anne speaks fondly of old and new impressions at the Wrigley House, also known as Tournament House, headquarters. The opening march down Orange Grove boulevard before the hard right turn onto Colorado Boulevard was not a problem for the 165-foot

‘Jingle’ float.

“You realize that something like that brings so much joy to so many people,” she said. “You see it in the faces of everyone all along the parade route. The excitement in the air is hard to believe and you do really feel quite special.”

Feeling fortunate to have the experience time and again, Anne is quick to recognize Sherwin, Johnson, their Visit Newport Beach staff and the dozens of local volunteers, many from the Balboa Bay Club, who made the parade entry a huge success.

After what is not likely her last appearance in a Rose parade, Anne Wortmann summed it up succinctly, “The whole experience just gives you hope for the future.”
