Dear Friends,
The game of golf is more than just sport. In so many ways golf is a metaphor of the human pursuit of accomplishment. Boy, that sounds esoteric. Worse, some might decry such a juxtaposition of human nature to a game played with “sticks” and tiny hard balls as more babble in a world of overreaching analysis of everything.
Just the same, consider this; the golfer competes with others, yet primarily is pushing the limits of his/ her own ability. Skill must be paired with intelligence and instinct. Strategy is key. Constant practice is essential. Failure can only be overcome with success following extensive dedication. And finally, the absurdity of standing hundreds of yards away from a small unseeable hole in the ground to which a small ball must travel at record speed air-bound and land gracefully in the magic marker is frankly, the definition of all of life’s challenges.
On that reflection, The Bay Window Magazine is proud to feature the 2024 Hoag Classic as the focus of its March issue. For 29 years the PGA seniors’ event has been hosted by the Newport Beach Country Club and has enjoyed national broadcasting coverage and accolades from golf fans worldwide. The legendary players of the sport have mastered the greens including champions Hale Irwin, Bernhard Langer, Fred Couples, Nick Price, Vijay Singh, Retief Goosen and defending champion, Ernie Els on the roster this season. Major funds will be raised from proceeds benefitting the lifesaving health services of Hoag Hospital along with companion charitable non-profits making a difference in the Newport-Mesa community and beyond.
Please find on these pages all of the information needed to attend, support and enjoy all of the many activities as well as the competition on the course over a week of play March 18-24.
Members of Newport Beach Country Club and Balboa Bay Club are extended VIP privileges and access to hospitality options. Please check with your club managers to learn more.
Read on. In addition to the Hoag Classic pages herein, we feature the early spring happenings at Newport Beach Country Club and Balboa Bay Club, including celebrations of every kind with club members and staff showing off the very best positive and life-affirming spirit demonstrated under the banner of “family, friends, and fun” on the California Riviera.
The 19th hole is calling.

SURPASSING 26 YEARS OF COMMUNITY SUPPORT THROUGH HOAG
Throughout its history, the Hoag Classic has generated millions of dollars benefitting Hoag and other local charities making it one of the most philanthropic events on the PGA TOUR Champions.
For more than 26 years, the annual tournament and proceeds have benefitted many of Hoag’s institutes including the Hoag Family Cancer Institute, Hoag Women’s Health Institute, Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart and Vascular Institute, and Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center.
This year a portion of the tournament’s net proceeds will again continue to go toward expanding Hoag’s programs and services that help bring access to world-class health and
wellness to our community.
In addition to Hoag, tournament proceeds have also been contributed to more than 50 local charities. Other current charitable initiatives include support of local military charities on behalf of Military Appreciation Day, presented by CoreLogic. Military causes include the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation and the Navy Memorial Foundation.
Thanks to the generosity and vision of Kingston Technology and in partnership with the Hoag Classic, Hoag employees are advancing their education, bettering their lives, and elevating the level of excellence Hoag provides to our community. Each year the Hoag Employee Scholarship Program has
awarded $70,000 in scholarships to deserving employees at Hoag who, without programs like these, may not be able to have the same opportunity.
The community has benefited from the economic impact of the Hoag Classic as well – to the tune of more than $35 million per year. The annual tournament fills hotel rooms, restaurants and businesses during the competition, and thanks to television broadcast on the Golf Channel in the U.S. – and internationally on PGA TOUR television partners overseas – the exposure for the Orange County community provides benefits that are both incredibly positive and immeasurable.

INSIDE THE HOAG CLASSIC
EASTON REPLACES PURSER AS HOAG CLASSIC EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
BY RANDY YOUNGMAN
World Golf Hall of Famers
Fred Couples and Ernie Els, both two-time Hoag Classic champions, will headline a stellar field when the world’s best 50-and-older golfers return to Newport Beach Country Club this month for the 28th edition of what has established itself as the crown jewel on the PGA Tour Champions tournament schedule.
Another familiar face will not be returning to NBCC this year: Jeff Purser, the executive director of the Hoag Classic for the previous 25 years, stepped down after Els won last year’s tournament title.
Purser’s replacement is longtime PGA Tour management executive Scott Easton, whose goal is to keep the Hoag Classic humming along at peak efficiency.
Easton, 56, was hired this past July to carry the Hoag flag for an event that historically draws the strongest fields and biggest crowds while distinguishing itself as one of the tour’s
top philanthropic success stories.
Previously, he worked as managing director for the longtime PGA Tour event in the Coachella Valley and for Live Nation Entertainment, a Beverly Hills-based company that promotes, operates and manages ticket sales for 150 entertainment venues around the country.
Easton realizes that he is inheriting an accomplished team and an established event in Newport Beach.
“It’s great to come into something that has a great foundation and a great history. All you can do is screw it up, right?” Easton said jokingly during an interview at Newport Beach Country Club last month. “If I came into something that really needed work, I could look like the hero.”
He laughed again.
“But, seriously, Jeff set the foundation of an amazing event, as you know, for one of the most successful events on the Champions tour, as far as money given to charity, the pro-am and number of players and how well it’s run, the hospitality . . . there’s more hospitality at this event than at a lot of PGA Tour events,” he added.
Easton knows that first-hand, because he had nearly 15 years of experience working in various capacities, including tournament operations and as managing director, at the PGA Tour event best known as the Bob Hope Desert Classic, then Humana Challenge, then CareerBuilder Challenge and now The American Express.
During his tournament-management tenure in the desert (2002-2017), Easton had to adapt to changes in corporate sponsorship, tournament format, tournament venues, celebrity participants, as well as a rotating slate of celebrity hosts and ambassadors (George Lopez, Bill Clinton, Arnold Palmer, Phil Mickelson), so he has proven that he is eminently flexible and accommodating. At Live Nation (2018-23), he was “Head of On-Site Excellence,” essentially incorporating sponsors into the entertainment venues.
“I’m walking into a great situation here. I
have a great team,” Easton said, mentioning Hoag Charity Sports holdovers Rich Thomas, longtime business operations director for the tournament and now the administrative director, as well as Kristi Rust, business and communications manager. “They are in different roles now, but they are a huge resource for us.”
Easton also referred to Allie Layne (sponsorship services and special events director) and Gus Scheidemann (sponsorship sales director) as his “right and left hands every day.”
Compared to the Bob Hope Desert Classic and its various iterations, the Hoag Classic is as entrenched as its longtime venue.
Born in 1995 as the Toshiba Senior Classic and played at Mesa Verde Country Club in Costa Mesa, the tournament moved the next year to Newport Beach CC, which is now the longest-running venue on PGA Tour Champions. Under the leadership of Purser, who took over the event in 1998, the tournament two years later became the first senior tour event to raise $1 million for charity in a year, and to date has raised more than $21 million for Hoag Hospital and other local charities.
Five years ago, after Toshiba exited as longtime title sponsor, the tournament was rebranded when Hoag Hospital added the role of title sponsor after serving two decades as the tournament host, manager and charitable beneficiary.
The transition has been seamless, and now the Hoag Classic has become the template for success on tour and a business model other Champions events have since emulated.
From up close, Easton has been following the Hoag Classic since he moved to the Newport Beach area five years ago to spend more time with sons Will, 14, and Tyler, 13.
“When I left the golf world in 2017, I looked at this job and saw that Purser was here and saw that he was my age, so I figured he was never going to leave,” Easton recalled. “I reached out to the tour at that time and said, ‘I’m really going to miss golf, but I need to stay
in California (for family reasons). If the Hoag Classic (job) ever becomes available, please let me know.’
“I put the word out there, to a couple of vendors, that’s the one job I would leave Live Nation for to get back into golf, because of my geographic constraints.”
Turns out, the golf gods were listening.
A week before the 2023 Hoag Classic, Easton received a call from a vendor who told him Purser was leaving.
He made a phone call to his contacts at HNS Sports Group, an event management team that has been working behind the scenes at the Hoag Classic for years, and he was told they already had a replacement for Purser in mind.
A week later, he made another call and asked for a meeting during the tournament.
“We met, probably spent two hours talking, had a great time and a great chat,” Easton said. “But it ended with, ‘We kind of already have our guy.’ ”
Two months later, before the Memorial Tournament in Ohio, which HNS also operates, Easton made another call because he hadn’t heard an announcement about the Hoag Classic job being filled.
Talks were revived.
“I don’t know what happened to their guy, but I ended up being their guy,” he said. “I started in July. It’s been great. I’m so happy to be back in the golf world.”
Since starting his new job, Easton has been brainstorming about ways the Hoag Classic could be elevated even further.
“I’ve tried to be careful of talking about things that enhance it, because it’s already a great event, and I don’t want to people to think I’m of the mindset that anything needs to be fixed,” he said. “What I’m trying to do is build on what’s here. We have a great golf tournament, great hospitality and great pro-ams.
“What I’ve kind of been charged (with doing) is to create a weekend of lifestyle events around what is an amazingly established golf tournament, and really showcase Newport Beach for what Newport Beach is all about. People don’t go to the film festival necessarily because they love films; they go because it’s a lot of fun, they might see celebrities, there’s great food and wine, and great socializing. So, we’re trying to create more of an atmosphere than what’s going on inside the ropes.”
Toward that end, Easton has organized a high-end, Hoag Classic Opening Night Party on Friday, March 22, at the VEA Resort & Spa (formerly Newport Beach Marriott), a hotel adjacent to the golf course, where “a
multi-platinum nationally acclaimed country music band” (he said he can’t yet announce the name) will perform. “It’s a private show for sponsors, partners and friends of the event,” Easton said, “but you can also register to win allotted tickets.” (Go to hoagclassic.com/ opening-party/ to enter the lottery.)
Another new feature of tournament week is the Ritz-Carlton Residences, Newport Beach Luxury Club, “an ultra-exclusive, highend hospitality package,” Easton calls it—an exclusive amenity for those who purchase the special ticket, which will include a hospitality area near the VEA, valet parking, shuttle service to the tournament, a private space in the NBCC clubhouse and entrance to two exclusive spectator structures on the No. 5 and No. 17 tees, where menus curated by the executive chefs of the Pendry Newport Beach and Balboa Bay Resort will be available.
Easton also has plans to introduce a celebrity competition for charity in 2025, a foursome of A-List celebs who will compete on the Saturday of the Hoag Classic following the final group of the second round.
“We’re always going to be focused on the golf tournament” Easton said, “but the lifestyle events are the add-ons for the tournament. . . . We want to build and create more of a partnership with the city and Visit Newport Beach, so we can showcase this community to the rest of the world through this tournament.”
As for the 2024 Hoag Classic (March 22-24), Easton said he expects the 78-player field “to be as strong as it’s ever looked,” featuring 36 of the top 38 players from the 2023 Schwab Cup points list. “The marquee names will include Couples, a Corona del Mar resident and perennial contender with two titles and six top-5 finishes in nine Hoag appearances; Els, the 2020 and 2023 champion; a handful of other World Golf Hall of Famers including 2022 Hoag winner Retief Goosen; and longtime Coto de Caza resident Paul Goydos, a fan favorite. Six-time Schwab Cup champion Bernhard Langer will be absent this year after tearing an Achilles’ tendon in training last month. Defending Schwab Cup champion Steve Stricker had not yet committed as of mid-February.

SARA WEBER ANNOUNCES HER CANDIDACY FOR NEWPORT BEACH CITY COUNCIL AT RECEPTION HOSTED BY LAUREN AND KORY KRAMER AT NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB
BY BRUCE COOK
Business, family, community culture, politics and social networking collided at a recent cocktail reception held at Newport Beach Country Club welcoming Sara Weber into the arena of local politics. A mid-week gathering in an ocean-view salon hosted by Lauren and Kory Kramer attracted a who’s who crowd of some one hundred young Newport professionals and entrepreneurs in support of Weber’s goal to seek election to the Newport Beach City Council in the fall.
“I am running for City Council to give back to the community that I grew up in and love. My husband and I are raising our children here and we want to ensure our kids and the generation that follows them will have the same opportunity to experience all the joys our city has to offer,” commented Weber.
Following a successful career of some 15 years as an accountant with one of So Cal’s “Big Four” firms, Weber joined her husband Matthias founding a private accounting practice serving both local clients as well as many out of area. The Weber family, with two young daughters Jane and Jules, resides in Newport Beach where Sara was raised attending Our Lady Queen of Angels Elementary School, Corona del Mar High School and University of San Diego where she earned graduate degrees in accounting.
“My goals are simple. I want to improve and enhance the quality of life for all residents with a primary focus on providing sufficient
funding for our police officers and firefighters, as well as building and maintaining our core infrastructure and paying down the city’s roughly $330 Million unfunded pension liability. Drawing upon my extensive fifteenyear tenure as a Certified Public Accountant, I am dedicated to ensuring the achievement of these goals with a keen focus on fiscal responsibility,” added the candidate.
Introduced to the gathering by Newport Beach Mayor Will O’Neill joined by Councilman Noah Blom offering praise for Weber’s values, work ethic and intelligence, the candidate followed with a short address and heartfelt thank you to constituents who had come to assist in fundraising, making her campaign a reality.
Running a demanding business, raising two children and serving the city is a tremendous task to entertain. Supporters, including Joe Stapelton, Lauren Kleiman, Robyn Grant, Scott Baugh, John and Anne Wortmann, Nick Gannon, Burton Young, Larry Tucker and others in the crowd shared confidence in Weber’s superior ability to serve. Also front and center supporting her goal was her father, well-known artist Michael Bryan, on hand with Teddie Ray. Devoted mom Laura Bryan, a real estate executive with Balboa Bay Residences, joined family and friends including Michelle and Eric Mear, Amber and Andy Stavros, CJ and Kaylen Noecker, Lauren Manfred, Kurt and Tammi Belcher, Tara Swanson, Jacqueline Niccole, Erika Bradley, Heather Pettorini, and Laura Koneval in a toast to the Weber campaign.
“The future of Newport Beach in the short and long term radiates with promise!” Weber said, continuing, “Despite our size, the city retains a charming small-town atmosphere, thanks to engaged and proactive residents committed to community improvement. If entrusted with your vote, my dedication is to actively listen and advocate for all, ensuring our city continues to thrive and be one of the greatest places in the world to call home!”
The political season 2024 is in full throttle, nationally, regionally and locally. Stay tuned. For more information on Sara Weber and her campaign please visit www.sarafornewport.com.

INSIDE THE RARIFIED WORLD OF NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB
Robin Shelton
CCM, PGA Master Professional General Manager
Newport
Beach Country Club
Dear NBCC Members,
A few years ago, I was reading an article that was describing Newport Beach. It has come to be one of my favorite descriptions of our city, stating, “Coastal Newport Beach is a quiet, relaxed place where you’re more likely to meet the harbor patrol than the highway patrol, and you may hear more birds than automobiles.”
As the Hoag Classic kicks off this month at Newport Beach Country Club, a number of the top golfers in the world will venture to our coastal paradise. The PGA TOUR Champions players will hear the birds and see the harbor patrol; they will feel the culture, the warmth and the charm of our wonderful city.
Held each year in March, the Hoag Classic consistently has one of the strongest lists of players on the PGA TOUR Champions. But what is it that creates this strong field of contestants? In talking with one of the players, he shared five factors that appeal to the great players competing in the tournament:
1. Weather: The players love the weather in Newport Beach.
2. Shopping: Fashion Island is just down the street, in the heart of our city, and the players’ wives and families love spending the day there.
3. Golf course: Our parkland golf course is a favorite amongst players for its layout and traditional design; it differs from many of the courses that they play that are bordered by roads or houses.
4. Clubhouse: Our clubhouse is one of the best. If you listen to the commentators on TV, you’ll hear comments about the quality of the food and even the hospitality that we provide here at NBCC.
5. John Wayne Airport: With its small size and how easy it is to get in or out, John Wayne Airport might be the best airport on the planet. Players love the convenience of our local airport versus some of its bigger competitors.
As the players come to visit our club for this contest and share their favorite things about the tournament, we are reminded of the things that make Newport Beach so special. It really is a quiet, relaxed place where you’re more likely to meet the harbor patrol than the highway patrol, and where you will hear more birds than automobiles.
All the best, Robin
Shelton

Still Going Strong
AS THE EXCITEMENT OF OUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS WEARS OFF, LEARN HOW TO KEEP MOTIVATION HIGH WITH THESE TIPS FROM BIANCA GILLETT, DIRECTOR OF FITNESS AND RECREATION AT NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB.
BY ASHLEY RYAN
Just after celebrating the New Year, motivation is at its peak: Everyone is ready to embrace a fresh start, begin the year right and make it their best yet. Whether that means building muscle, losing weight or simply practicing new, healthier habits, you’re likely to push hard as you take off from the start line.
But, as we move into spring, motivation can sometimes start to slip. “The [excitement of] New Years … has worn off, so inspiration takes a big drop in intensity,” says Bianca Gillett, director of fitness and recreation at Newport Beach Country Club.
“Motivation also dies down, because it takes about 8 to 12 weeks to see major changes within the body. So people are working hard [in] January and February, but not seeing a lot of results—not knowing that, if they stay disciplined to their habits, results are just around the corner.”
March, Gillett says, is the hardest month of the year for individuals looking to meet fitness goals because they’re still waiting on proof that what they’re doing is working. Since the mind loves to stay in its comfort zone and avoids change, you need to stay disciplined long enough for results to
materialize because that will push your motivation higher and make the journey fun again.
Staying consistent is one of the best ways to break past this slump, and Gillett says its also the No. 1 rule of fitness. “If you want to be successful in living a healthy life, you have to stay consistent to your habits and routine that will get you there,” she adds.
“There really is no other way around it. You cannot out-train a bad diet, and no one ever got strong by sitting on the couch. Keep in mind, everyone’s habits and goals could be different, but the common denominator is
everyone has to do their action steps—aka habits—to get to those goals.”
Tracking progress can be one way to stay on top of your actions. If this helps you keep on track, find a measurement—whether it’s the number on the scale or the number of reps you can do of a certain exercise—that shows how much you’ve improved so far. It’s also possible that tracking your progress will create unnecessary stress, so don’t feel pressured to do this if it’s not for you.
However, she says not to skip the planning stage as it can be pivotal to your success. “If you want to get serious about reaching your fitness goals, you have to have a plan [or] strategy in place. And if you don’t know how to create that plan, then seek professional help,” Gillett says. “…What great win—sports, acting or music awards, or business—has been accomplished without a plan? I bet not many.”
No matter what you do, remember that you will see results if you persist, so dig deep and find the motivation to keep going this spring.
KEEP MOTIVATION HIGH
Here, Gillett reveals how you can find inspiration to keep working toward your goals as we shift into springtime.
1. Use a Visual Aid: Finding a photo that will remind you of why you’re trying to get healthy and keeping it somewhere where you’ll see it often can help you find motivation. “If your ‘why’ is an anniversary trip to Hawaii with your spouse and you want to feel confident in a bathing suit, then make a picture of Hawaii your phone screen saver,” Gillett suggests. “That way you are constantly being hit with a reminder of why you are doing what you are doing.”
2. Get an Accountability Buddy: One of her biggest tips is to find someone you trust to help you stay on track and push you to keep going. “And make it someone who will actually hold you accountable, not someone who will be too nice and let you slide,” Gillett adds.
3. Reward Yourself: Giving yourself a little treat for your hard work can help encourage you to stick with it. “If you stay consistent with your healthy habits, reward yourself with a massage or facial or something you enjoy,” she notes. Just try to avoid tying it to food if your goal is to lose weight or get fit.
Dining on the Course
AS NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB GEARS UP FOR THE HOAG CLASSIC, DIRECTOR OF FOOD & BEVERAGE SARAH SANCHEZ SHARES A LITTLE ABOUT FINDING FARE AT THE TOURNAMENT.
BY ASHLEY RYAN
For those venturing from elsewhere, the buzz around the Hoag Classic is electrifying. But it’s even more exciting for those who frequent Newport Beach Country Club regularly, as they’re afforded the chance to see their hangout spot transformed for a PGA Tour tournament.
“Amidst the excitement and energy of the Hoag Classic … gracing our country club, there’s a comforting familiarity that awaits within our clubhouse—basic yet utterly satisfying good offerings that provide a taste of home even [during] … the grandeur of the golfing event,” notes Sarah Sanchez, director
of food & beverage at NBCC.
From the clubhouse to the members’ tent—and everywhere in between—you’ll find an array of cuisine options to enjoy throughout the event. Read on to discover what awaits NBCC members at this year’s Hoag Classic.
IN THE CLUBHOUSE
Options abound at the clubhouse each year during this beloved contest, providing guests with an array of cuisine to sample. “From hearty sandwiches and freshly grilled burgers to crisp salads, our culinary offerings focus on delivering simple yet flavorful dishes that
cater to every appetite,” Sanchez says.
Visit the Seahorse Grille for special dining events that are available to members and those with clubhouse passes. Each day of the tournament, enjoy a continental breakfast buffet from 8-11 a.m., which Sanchez says will “kick-start the day with a touch of elegance and convenience.” As the sun comes up, slip into the clubhouse to enjoy breakfast essentials like seasonal fruit, baked goods, fresh-brewed coffee, hot tea and a daily special.
On Wednesday and Thursday, the continental breakfast will be followed up with an a la carte lunch menu from 11 a.m.
to 3 p.m. The dishes will delight and inspire guests, Sanchez says, by bringing culinary magic to the clubhouse. Then, beginning Friday and running throughout the weekend, a gourmet lunch buffet will take place during the same hours. “Indulge in a feast fit for champions,” she adds, noting that there will be a burger bar that allows guests to customize and elevate beef or swordfish patties with toppings like crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, smoky bacon or a plethora of tangy sauces. Share food amongst friends as you complete the meal with a selection of sides and beverages.
A lounge will also be popping up in the clubhouse beginning Friday, set in the ballroom overlooking the golf course. A member badge or clubhouse pass is required for entrance, but once inside, enjoy the view with comfortable seating and a digital stream of the event. Live music will also be played while a lounge menu station will be available from 3-6 p.m. for those looking for a snack: Nosh on things like golden Tater Tots, pizzas, hot dogs, chicken tenders, buffalo wings and more. A premium bar will also be available until sundown.
ON THE COURSE
Set on the 17th hole, the members-only tent provides exclusive access to a viewing deck that overlooks the course. While guests are not allowed, members can visit on a firstcome, first-served basis on Friday through Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“Our member tent stands as a beacon of fun … during the tournament,” Sanchez reveals. “Nestled within this exclusive enclave, members are treated to freshly baked artisanal pizzas, each crafted with care and adorned with premium toppings, promising a taste sensation like no other.” The scents of wood-fired crust and melted cheese mingle in the air, but the excitement doesn’t end there. A private bar will also be part of the festivities, offering brews to complement the pizzas as well as cocktails crafted by NBCC bartenders. A gourmet coffee station will also be available.
“In the member tent, overlooking the green, every slice of pizza, every cocktail and every aromatic cup of coffee is a testament to the camaraderie and culinary excellence that defines our club’s commitment to providing an unparalleled experience for our esteemed members,” Sanchez adds. No matter where you wine and dine, we hope you enjoy the creations the food and beverage team has for you during this year’s Hoag Classic.
Forming Friendships
FRESHLY PROMOTED TO LEAD RECREATION ATTENDANT, ADAM MCMASTER NOW PLAYS A LARGER ROLE IN THE MANAGEMENT OF THE NEWPORT
BEACH COUNTRY CLUB KID’S CLUB.
BY ASHLEY RYAN
It’s been two years since Adam McMaster applied to work at Newport Beach Country Club, and he’s recently earned a promotion. The Riverside native had moved up to San Luis Obispo to begin college, then
decided to transfer to Orange Coast College. While working as a resident advisor for OCC’s student housing, McMaster looked up jobs in the area and stumbled across an opening at NBCC for a recreation attendant. After nearly two years in the position, McMaster was promoted to lead recreation attendant at the beginning of February.
“Before, I … would staff kid’s club, but I would just kind of be a helping hand,” he explains. “Now, I oversee it and take a little bit more control.”
The role is still new to him, but he says he’s ready to embrace the work he needs to do to find success managing the kid’s club. “As recreation lead, my roles are going to be leading by example, solving any issues that come up and then relaying them to my direct leadership, Bianca or Gabe,” McMaster says.
Kid’s club takes place on Saturday evenings at NBCC, when parents drop off their children at the ladies’ grill and head upstairs for a child-free dinner. During each session, the kids can watch movies or TV shows through streaming channels, play video games with a Nintendo Switch, color, draw, play with Legos or enjoy games like Twister or Jenga with others. “We’re going to be getting some other games, too,” McMaster says, “… and finding more activities for the kids that they can work on with each other. On the instances that we have a lot of kids, it can be hard to be one-on-one with each individual. So [I’m] just finding things that they can do together so that they still enjoy being there and form friendships
with the other kids at the club as well.”
“I just love hanging out with the kids there,” he adds. “It’s fun to grow connections with them. They’re fun to be around. They’re just honest little people. So it’s always a good time.”
McMaster is also involved in NBCC’s True North leadership program, which he says is helping him develop how to navigate becoming more of a leader in this new role. So far, he says, this has been both interesting and challenging. “I like being about to take the initiative to solve issues that come up with my fellow team members to provide a good experience, especially in kid’s club, and for the parents to feel that their kids are safe and well taken care of,” he notes.
In the couple of years that McMaster has been employed at NBCC, he says he has noticed how unique the atmosphere is. “I feel like I’ve grown super good relationships with people inside my department, outside my department—everyone’s always happy to be there,” McMaster explains. “I feel like the environment is always welcoming, [with] high energy. And everyone just seems to love being here, which I think is hard to find in a workplace.”
Outside of work, McMaster enjoys visiting his parents and his dog, Izzy, in Riverside, working out and going to Disneyland with his mom. He also has a passion for traveling. “I try to travel internationally at least once a year,” he notes, revealing that he took a cruise to Italy, France and Spain last year and has plans to venture to Greece in 2024.

Dear BBC Members,
May the luck of the Irish smile upon you all month long! We have a month filled with events for our members this month including Kids’ Movie Night, St. Patrick’s Day, Mommy & Me Princess Tea, Bingo and Easter. Be sure to read all about them in the pages that follow and make your reservations early!
This month also brings the return of the Hoag Classic! This year’s tournament looks to be every bit as amazing a golf experience as golf fans have come to expect on the PGA Tour Champions. I encourage all of you to take advantage of the opportunity to see these legends of golf right here in our own backyard.
This year’s event will see defending champion, Ernie Els up against some great competitors including crowd favorite, Fred Couples, Padraig Harrington, Colin Montgomerie, Darren Clarke, and Jim Furyk just to name a few. Last year it took Els overcoming a five-stroke deficit going into the final round to secure the title and thanks to two birdies on his last three holes, he claimed his second Hoag Classic title. Will he make it three or will we see a new champion? Only time will tell, but one thing we can count on is that the Hoag Classic always delivers a championship experience.
Balboa Bay Club Members are invited to join us in our hospitality tent Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Space is limited, and reservations are required. For more information, please contact the Club Desk at 949-630-4120.
I look forward to seeing you at the Hoag Classic and out enjoying all your BBC membership has to offer!

Spring Awakening at the Club
MARCH 2024 HOLIDAYS, CELEBRATIONS AND EVENTS
By Christine Nuñez, Membership Coordinator/Executive Administrative Assistant
March, a month with roots deep in Roman mythology, is far more than just a transitional period. As we bid farewell to winter and usher in the warmth of spring, March unfolds a tapestry of celestial events, cultural celebrations and community engagements.
On March 19th, nature orchestrates the grand performance of the vernal equinox, officially marking the commencement of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. This celestial spectacle aligns the Sun directly over Earth’s equator, heralding longer days and the promise of blooming life to come.
March is not just about the change in season; it’s a canvas painted with various cultural hues. International Women’s Day on March 8th celebrates the achievements and contributions of women globally. March 10th witnesses the clock’s forward leap as Daylight Savings Time returns, giving up more daylight to savor. St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th paints the world green with festivities and parades, a nod to Irish culture that resonates worldwide.
From March 20-24th, the spotlights turns to the Newport Beach Country Club as it hosts the Hoag Classic. More than a golf tournament, this event has become a pinnacle on the PGA Tour of Champions, raising over $20 million in funds for Hoag and other local charities. It’s a week that transcends sports, bringing together communities for a philanthropic cause.
March’s full moon, affectionately known as the Worm Moon, reaches its peak illumination on the morning of March 25th, 2024. An astronomical spectacle, it invites us to gaze at the night sky on the evening of March 24th as the moon rises above the horizon, casting its mesmerizing glow.
If you haven’t had the opportunity to update your BBC vehicle decals to the 75th anniversary ones, please stop by the membership offices with your DMV registration for updated ones!

HOAG CLASSIC
March brings with it the tradition of the Hoag Classic at Newport Beach Country Club, an annual stop for the PGA TOUR Champions. Last year’s champion, Ernie Els, and last year’s Schwab Cup Champion, Steve Stricker, lead a star-studded field of tour professionals onto the challenging Billy Bell course that was built in 1953. This year the Hoag Classic will be the fourth stop for PGA TOUR Champions.
For many, golf is an active sport, one which we enjoy playing. However, the Hoag Classic makes viewing the game a true joy. The manicured grounds of Newport Beach Country Club serve as a wonderful venue for either picking a hole to stand and watch as the legends of golf pass through your chosen spot, or following your favorite player as they work
their way around the course. Personally, my advice is finding a player you like that might be teeing off earlier in the day, and then following them through to the 16th or 17th hole, where you can then watch the rest of these masters of the game pass by.
While the details were not available at the time of publishing, the Balboa Bay Club has, for the past several years, also had its own hospitality tent with food and beverages available along with ticket reservations for the event. This provides a respite from the crowd, and an inviting atmosphere to mingle with your friends from the Club while attending the event.
One of my favorite aspects of the tournament is the family-friendly atmosphere. Bringing my kids, who are just learning to play golf, and letting them see people who are incredibly
good at the sport can be extremely motivating. Similar to how when kids go to their first baseball game, they develop a favorite player and love for the sport, seeing these athletes at the pinnacle of their craft can go a long way to inspiring a young athlete to strive to achieve those same championship dreams.
Whether you take the whole family, or just sneak away from the office for one of the weekday tournament days, enjoy this year’s tournament, enjoy the excellent level of golf, the tournament course layout, and the serene environment of the NBCC course.

19TH HOLE LIBATIONS AND TREATS FOR FANS TO ENJOY
BY LANA SILLS
Get ready for the PGA Tour in our own backyard! The Hoag Classic Champions Tournament is on the 20th of March through the 24th at the Newport Beach Country Club. Good to know: Sunday, March 24th is Student Day, 18 and under are free with a ticketed adult.
The Newport Beach Country Club is a Forbes Boardroom Magazine Distinguished Club opened in 1954 with a championship golf course, ocean breezes and beautiful views. Designed by William F. Bell and William P. Bell, it features a 6,600 yard, par 72 championship golf course, highlighted by Kikuyu grass and a reputation for exceptionally well-manicured greens. The speed and slope of the greens are often the biggest challenge for even professional golfers.
The PGA Tour is the perfect opportunity to gather your friends and family to celebrate with a golf-themed party! Enhance a simple spread of food with a few golf-themed touches and you’re set. A golf-centric menu of “golf club” sandwiches, potato “chip shots,” pretzel rods as “irons” and “woods,” chicken “birdie” wings, golf-themed charcuterie boards, and your guests will love a variety of fabulous beers, spirits and wines. For something sweet, an assortment of cake balls coated in white chocolate to resemble golf balls with flake coconut dyed with green food coloring for the underlying grass.
Beer is the perfect complement to any dining experience; watching the Hoag Classic in the NBCC clubhouse, Balboa Bay Club restaurants, Members Grill, at home in front of the TV or after a good golf game a.k.a. the 19th hole. For guests and locals, the perfect spot for watching the tournament is A+O Restaurant at the Balboa Bay Resort and my bar of choice… casual and fun, serving comforting classics, it’s the picture-perfect, on-the-bay place to watch the tournament and enjoy a sports day with a beer menu of a seasonal rotating tap handle, Guinness, 805 Blonde Ale, Bells Two Hearted American IPA – and the cab and pinot noir
selections are outstanding.
For pairings, whether it’s a Belgian Wheat Beer with a simple salad, a Pilsner to wash down spicy tacos, a Pale Ale alongside a porcini risotto or even a Framboise to accompany a dark chocolate brownie, all will delight your palate.
For your pre-game golf tournament gathering, a brown sugar Old Fashioned is the perfect cocktail…a little brown sugar makes this classic cocktail all warm and cozy. To make one drink in a glass, add 1 teaspoon packed brown sugar, 1 teaspoon water, 2 dashes Angostura bitters. Muddle until sugar is dissolved. Add 2 ounces Bourbon and ice and stir to combine. Garnish with an orange peel and cinnamon stick.
Your post-game golf party might need a vodka martini. The small, independent American distilleries have produced so much diversity that there are easily 500 domestic vodkas on the market today. I am, no doubt, a
Grey Goose girl – the bright aromatic qualities and the floral notes will elevate any cocktail.
If you enjoy spicy drinks, Sriracha Vodka might be for you. Phillips Distilling Company offers UV Sriracha in red bottles with green caps. It’s not too hot, not too spicy, and the ideal vodka to punch up a Bloody Mary or any savory drink. Sriracha could be enhanced with a sweetener (honey comes to mind) to make sweet spicy glazes and yes, you can put Sriracha in desserts. It’s easy to find recipes for Sriracha caramel sauce, Sriracha cookies, and even Sriracha fudge and brownies. You can buy a hot salted Sriracha chocolate bar for taste-testing purposes.
Whether you’re gathering for the electric atmosphere of the tournament or watching at the Newport Beach Country Club or Balboa Bay Club restaurants, planning pre or post golf par-tees, your favorite golfers will make the day memorable. Eat, Drink, Play.

What inspired you to become a personal trainer?
WOO: My journey into Personal Training began at the age of 13 when I earned my black belt, eventually becoming a lead assistant martial arts instructor. The natural inclination for coaching and educating others fueled my passion. I pursued a degree in Exercise Science and obtained my NASM CPT license which further solidified my commitment to biomechanics and human anatomy. As a Personal Trainer at the iconic BBC, I’m grateful for the opportunity to share my passion and knowledge with the Club members.
COLLEEN: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial for long-term well-being and recognizing that some individuals may need guidance to achieve their goals is what inspired me to become a Personal Trainer. Over the past 7 years at BBC, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many wonderful and interesting people and it has been a joy.

experience is essential, considering the effort it takes to show up to the gym.
BILLY: I customize workout programs to fit each and every individual, creating one tailored to their specific needs. Not everyone has the same goals, and that’s where I cater to their individuality.
Can you share the success story of a client who achieved remarkable results under your guidance?
COLLEEN: A particular client was determined to improve her fitness, despite having limited time. After assessing her abilities, we designed a workout plan and I suggested incorporating a jump rope for additional cardio. Initially hesitant, she soon embraced the portable and time-efficient tool, quickly becoming proficient. She started doing quick 10-minute jump rope workouts during her routine, resulting in significant cardiovascular improvements, more confidence and less stress!
In the ever-evolving fitness industry, how do you stay updated on the latest trends?
WOO: I attend Personal Training conferences to study programs from other top trainers in the industry and implement what I believe are useful ideas, concepts and resources.
BILLY: I continually stay up to date on the
latest news and trends by collaborating with professionals in various sports at all levels. I never hesitate to ask questions and take fitness courses to contribute to staying on top of the latest trends.
How do you maintain your own fitness and wellness?
WOO: I maintain my own health and wellness by focusing on eating clean, staying hydrated, getting quality sleep, meditating and staying physically active.
COLLEEN: Consistency is the trickiest part, but I aim to incorporate a 30-minute walk or a yoga session daily at the minimum. This helps manage stress levels. I also prioritize buying healthy foods and make mindful choices when dining out.
What makes training at a Balboa Bay Club unique compared to other fitness settings?
BILLY: Balboa Bay Club is an iconic, diverse setting, attracting members from around the world who utilize the facilities. I wouldn’t want to work anywhere else and couldn’t think of a better Club to be a part of.

There is no other fitness facility that compares to the beauty the property offers and now, with the remodeled fitness center, it can’t be beaten.
