It is a balmy Sunday June afternoon. Sky is overcast, Newport “June Gloom.” There is a warm sun somewhere above the gray and it manages to bolt through unexpectedly, then vanishes and returns again without warning. Dick Pickup sits in his chosen lounge chair at the far south corner of the elevated pool deck tucked into the L-shaped towers of Balboa Bay Club Residences. On the adjacent patio table rests his worn executive leather envelope and a stack of newspapers along with clipped articles taken from multiple sources. It is the Sunday afternoon reading material for the week.
The shirtless investor in his customary white bathing shorts removes his signature BBC baseball style cap in order to capture the sun when it breaks through the clouds. Dick Pickup thrives on sunshine; his suntanned face is testament to the healthy addiction. When not capturing the heavenly rays poolside, that face grabs the warm light on regular golf outings, a lifetime pursuit and personal passion. Why, even his favorite song is “The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow” from the Broadway musical “Annie.”
That song, the love of the warm sun, the parting of the gray skies are metaphors of this man’s life.
The boy from Whittier, California would enter the world of finance and investment learning to broker stocks and bonds post-graduation from Whittier College. Over the ensuing seven decades of a remarkable life in that often ruthlessly competitive arena, Dick Pickup was nothing if not a long-game player. Surviving the corrections, depressions, recissions and fads, Pickup invested to win that long game, and he did. He rose and conquered through strict adherence to his principles established in conjunction with serious investigation, research and focus on every investment. He loved stocks with dividends. He loved innovative technology stocks led by big talent. When he believed in a stock, he bought big. And mostly, he won big as a result. Of course there were set-backs, misjudgments, losses, difficult periods. But, the sun always did come out tomorrow. It’s not corny. It is absolutely the real story.
The gray skies open as another bolt of sun strikes like a laser. How is it that this moment of universal energy manages to land squarely on Dick Pickup? Accepting the gift of light, Dick puts down his Forbes Report, places his reading glasses on top of the pages on the table, rises and walks the length of the pool from the deep to shallow, entering on the steps. He does not test the water temperature as most do. He dives in headfirst and strokes freestyle back across to the deep end of more than eight feet of liquid therapy.
About to turn 90 years of age with the vitality of a much younger man, we meet in the water as we have done for some ten years or more on weekend afternoons. On most of these days, there is no one else there, or perhaps just a few sunbathers in their own world lounging on the plush blue and white chairs lining the pool deck facing the flowing and sparkling water of the Newport Main Channel.
Dick swims laps and I press on with my obligatory hour to an hour and a half of pool breaststroke walking. With every other lap
length, we stop and tread water and talk. As a writer, interviewer and big talker, this is my realm. Not so much for Dick Pickup. The man is the quintessential listener. He speaks only when he has something to share.
I value those pauses in our pool therapy. I listened more than I talked. He talked more than he might have been accustomed to sharing. This was a special time. I will miss my weekend pool friend. He was a mentor, an educator and advisor. Sharing wisdom, experiences, encouragement and generous good will, Dick Pickup left a considerable mark on all those he loved; family first, friends, and good people he never knew that will benefit for generations from his extraordinary philanthropy.
A man of few words and many great deeds passed from this life before the coming of summer 2024. My June afternoons will now have to be thankful for great memories.
God Speed, Dick!

We found our “dream boat” at the show, but we’ll have to sell our house and mortgage our children’s future in order to buy. So, we are very satisfied with our present boat, and we hold on to the dream for another day!
Joining all of our yachty buddies from the Balboa Bay Club at the show, we had an amazing time attending all the VIP parties. We ran into Natalie McCollum from Embark Magazine, a beautiful new first edition just out. Sun County Marine Group’s Ryan Landaal was front and center with our “dream boat,” a brand-new Riviera 395. The BBC Marina’s own Serengeti Yacht owned by Jim Glidewell was a star of the show manned by the superhandsome crew from the Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas.
Best of all, Maryann and David Johndrow (our June cover couple) introducing BoatBot changing the yachting industry.

In the heart of Southern California, under the golden sun and amidst the serene waves, a remarkable journey began—a journey that would change the marine service industry forever. Meet David and Maryann Johndrow, a dynamic duo of avid boat enthusiasts and the visionary founders behind BoatBot, the revolutionary platform designed to transform the boating experience for owners and vendors alike.
David, with a passion for the open seas and a resume that includes sailing across diverse waters worldwide, found his "Happy Place" aboard his beloved boat. Yet, the joy of boating was often marred by unexpected issues and maintenance challenges. The frustration of discovering yet another problem upon arriving at his boat was a familiar disappointment, one that many boat owners know all too well.
It was this recurring challenge that inspired David and Maryann to embark on a mission to find a solution. After months of searching for an app they could download to help manage their boat, they found only electronic file cabinets, smart spreadsheets or apps that would have them work with only certain vendors. However, they trusted the service partners they had worked with for years and did not want to switch, plus they wanted the app to do more. With backgrounds in the tech industry and a shared love for the boating lifestyle, they set out to create a "boat-centered" technology solution that would ensure every boat was shipshape before setting sail.
Their mission was crystal clear: to create a platform that serves as a beacon for the entire marine industry, guiding boat owners, service vendors, and now brokers, toward smoother, more efficient and enjoyable boating experiences.
Driven by their vision, David went the extra mile to immerse himself in the world of boat
maintenance and operations, even obtaining his 100-Ton Master Captain’s license. This dedication to understanding the ins and outs of boating from the ground up was crucial in shaping the development of BoatBot.
Meanwhile, Maryann dove headfirst into the world of AI, gaining her certification as an AI Consultant in order to streamline and automate not only the system they were creating, but also their internal organization. After months of dedicated research, development, and rigorous testing, BoatBot was born—the ultimate companion for managing your vessel or marine service business.
BoatBot isn't just an app for boat owners, or a service system for vendors; it's the culmination of David and Maryann's passion, expertise and unwavering commitment to enhancing the boating experience. It's a platform that brings together boat owners and trusted vendors in a convenient one-stop shop, simplifying the lives of everyone involved in the marine service industry.
Experience the leading edge, AI-powered technology that empowers boat owners and vendors to enjoy real-time automated communications, predictive maintenance, organized digital service records and seamless collaborations. The boat itself can now launch start up and shut down checklists, notify the owner of arrivals and departures, and provide expert boating advice from CaptainAI. Finally, experience peace of mind in the world of boating!
With BoatBot, boat owners can finally regain complete control over their cherished vessels, say goodbye to the hassle of unexpected maintenance issues and reclaim their own personal "Happy Place" out on the water. Similarly, service providers can efficiently manage their businesses, level their workload year-round and increase revenues, all while ensuring they offer the best possible service to
their clients.
BoatBot's platform facilitates unparalleled connectivity between brokers, buyers, sellers and service providers. This interconnected ecosystem means brokers can easily coordinate maintenance or repairs, access a detailed log of service histories and maintenance schedules and more. Essentially a brokerage can create a virtual service department without the hassle and expense of a full-service department. This feature not only streamlines the brokerage process, but also instills confidence in buyers and sellers alike, ensuring transparency and trust long after the sale.
David and Maryann's journey from frustrated boat owners to innovative solution creators is a testament to the power of vision, perseverance and technology. BoatBot is more than just their solution to a common
problem—it's an invitation to fellow boat owners and vendors to join the evolution of the marine service industry.
As this story unfolds across the pages of this magazine and echoes through press releases nationwide, David and Maryann extend a warm invitation to you: Sign up for a free trial and be among the first to experience the revolution. With BoatBot by your side, your boat will always be ready for the next adventure, ensuring you never lose sight of your "Happy Place."
So, let's set sail together into a future where boating is not just a passion, but a seamless, joyful experience. Welcome aboard BoatBot, where we're all about helping you "Get Your Ship Together.”
Download your free trial in the Apple or Google stores or visit www.boatbot.ai.

BY KELLY BENNETT
In the sun-kissed enclave of Newport Beach, where the sea breeze whispers tales of valor and camaraderie, two men, Milton H. Grannatt and William F. "Bill" Capps, stand as pillars of service and dedication, their lives intertwined by fate and shared devotion to their country and community.
Milton's story is of legacy and tradition, a tapestry woven with threads of honor and sacrifice passed down through generations. Commissioned as an ROTC officer from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, Milton embarked on a journey of service that would define his life. His tenure in the US Army Reserve, stationed at Fort Knox, KY as an Armor officer (CPT), was not merely a duty but a calling rooted in family history.
His father, a hero of the Greatest Generation, earned a Bronze Star for his bravery as a Medic with the First Division during WWII. From the deserts of North Africa to the beaches of Normandy, his father's footsteps echoed with the echoes of history, leaving an indelible mark on the Grannatt family legacy. Even after the guns fell silent, his father's commitment to service endured, as he devoted himself to supporting the families of soldiers through the Big Red One Foundation.
Milton's own service coincided with a tumultuous period in American history, marked by social upheaval and conflict. Yet, amidst the chaos, he found solace and purpose within the ranks of the American Legion Post 291. For nearly a decade, he has been a steadfast member, embracing the camaraderie and sense of belonging that the legion provides. Post 291, with its storied history and unwavering dedication to veterans, has become a second home for Milton, a sanctuary where friendships flourish and memories are made.
On the other side of the coin lies Bill Capps, a man whose journey into the military was
marked by chance and circumstance. Drafted during his first year of law school at Berkeley, Bill's path diverged from Milton's, leading him down a different road of service and sacrifice. As the astronauts landed on the moon, Bill found himself en route to Fort Sam Houston, Texas, to undergo training as a medic, a role that would shape his life in ways he never imagined.
Deployed to Chu Lai, Vietnam, just south of DaNang, Bill served in an Army evacuation hospital, serving the wounded with courage and compassion. His "sacrifice" as a draftee, as he modestly puts it, paled compared to the bravery and resilience of the soldiers he treated. Yet, during those long days and nights in the midst of war, Bill discovered the true meaning of service and brotherhood.
Their dedication to their respective clubs, the Newport Beach Country Club and the Balboa Bay Club adds another layer to their narratives. Milton's membership in the Newport Beach Country Club reflects his affinity for tradition and elegance, a space where he can unwind
and connect with fellow veterans in a setting reminiscent of the camaraderie he experienced during his military service. Meanwhile, Bill's involvement in the Balboa Bay Club underscores his appreciation for the finer things in life, a testament to his resilience and determination to embrace life to the fullest despite the challenges he faced during his time in Vietnam.
Their shared experiences as veterans and members of prestigious clubs in Newport Beach highlight the diverse tapestry of the American Legion's membership. From armor officers to medics, each member brings a unique perspective and set of experiences to the table, enriching the legion's legacy and ensuring its continued relevance in the 21st century.
Reflecting on the significance of the American Legion's centennial milestone, Milton and Bill deeply appreciate the organization's enduring legacy. For Milton, Post 291 is more than just a gathering place; it's a testament to the bonds of friendship and the spirit of community that define the
legion. Likewise, Bill's involvement speaks to the diverse offerings and inclusive atmosphere fostered by the American Legion in Newport Beach.
Milton and Bill's poignant tales echo the sacrifices of generations of veterans and the timeless camaraderie fostered by the Legion.
From European battlefields to Vietnam's shores, the Legion's spirit of unity shines bright, guiding future veterans and their families.
Standing united with their comrades, Milton and Bill exemplify the Legion's ethos, a beacon of hope and solidarity nationwide. As they toast to the next century, their legacy ignites inspiration for generations to come.
The public is invited to come to the Post and commemorate the 100-year anniversary celebration of American Legion Post 291 from July 4th through the 6th! Amidst a whirlwind of festivities, including a pancake breakfast, live bands, a vibrant boat parade, silent auctions, raffles, and much more, we honor the enduring legacy of this esteemed institution. Visit www. al291.com for details and updates.

AMAZING NEW MEMBERS JOIN THE CLASS OF 2024 AS SUMMER AT THE BBC
BY TRACEY MINES
Please join management and existing club members in welcoming four new families to the BBC family. Each family shares a bit of their personal motivation to join. Welcome them with BBC spirit if you run into them at the pool- or beachside, in the gym or spa or maybe at the Members Grill. We are thrilled to have them all become a part of “The Host of the Coast.”
Our family thrives on spending quality time together, nurturing our children’s growth and creating a safe and loving environment for them. We are passionate marine enthusiasts and lovers of the great outdoors. We believe that joining the BBC community will enhance our family values and shared interests. We are excited to be a part of the BBC, where we can create unforgettable memories, forge lasting friendships and enrich our lives with wonderful experiences.
After visiting the BBC with the Song family, who were existing members, we immediately fell in love with the exclusive setting, easy going ambience and children’s activities. Being avid yachtsmen, we look forward to long days on the water with relaxing intermissions at the BBC. We look forward to contributing to the great establishment for years to come.
We became familiar with the Balboa Bay club over our years in Newport Beach, having attended casual gatherings with friends who are members, monumental birthday celebrations and many corporate events, each time finding the club to be a remarkable experience. There is something quite calming about an evening near the water in Newport Beach at a beautiful club (who also has an exceptionable hamburger).
We sincerely hope to enjoy the best the club has to offer with far more frequency and make many more memories with our entire family.
AVI AND KALI SEGAL FAMILY
We are looking forward to connecting with other families in the community and establishing roots at Balboa Bay Club. Our two boys are our world and seeing all of the family events and social gatherings at BBC will make our move from Arizona to Newport an exciting transition. Thank you for having us!

MEMBERS GRILL DEBUTS A FABULOUS NEW MENU
BY LANA SILLS
Spring and Summer menus are my favorite…the days are longer and the sun is warmer, and the time for a leisurely lunch either in a comfy booth or dining outside on the patio in Members Grill is just perfect. Chef Chad brought us ten memorable dishes to taste (yes, I am still full!).
The Shareables were a scrumptious start. Ahi Nachos with avocado, pineapple salsa, furikake, wonton chips and yuzu aioli are absolutely delicious – beautiful tuna, a contrast of textures and the right amount of heat. Fried Brussels Sprouts with a soy glaze, bacon crumbles, cashews and Siracha aioli were crispy, caramelized and hard to resist. Harissa Lamb Lollipops with roasted cipollinis and a mint pesto sauce are super juicy, tender and fabulous finger food.
The BLTA is layered lusciously on a perfectly griddled, golden, buttery and delicious sourdough bread perfectly proportioned with smoky bacon, crisp lettuce, juicy tomato, creamy avocado and a smooth garlic aioli. Sandwiches are always my go-to and the craveable For The Hands section of the new menu offers a French Dip, BBC Power Burger, Chicken Basil Sandwich…and all are must-tries.
In the Soups & Salads section of the Lunch Menu, the Spanish Filet Bowl with tender beef filet medallions, Spanish rice, chipotle crema, orange chimichurri and crispy shallots is a heart-healthy salad with lots of bright flavors from fresh herbs and sweet peppers. It’s warming and nourishing for a lunch overlooking the Harbor. Quinoa, farro, jasmine rice… so many perfectly cooked grains grace a few of the new dishes. In a great read
“Build-A-Bowl” by Nicki Sizemore you will get inspiration, advice and recipes for enjoying whole grains ready on your table quickly and easily in colorful bowls.
Wait until you taste the Steak Frites! Prime flat iron, garlic fries and chimichurri sauce, what could be better? It’s a great starter for the table or a protein-packed lunch after a good workout. The Gluten-Free Buddha Bowl with tahini dressing and your choice of chicken, salmon, steak or tofu is an immensely flavorful salad and the creamy, lemony dressing beautifully coats the mix of vegetables so well.
Chicken Cacciatore dates back to the Renaissance period in Italy. Pollo alla Cacciatora, in Italian, translates to “hunter’s chicken,” combining chicken with foraged herbs and vegetables and eventually this dish became a celebration of the hunter’s successful
return and ability to feed his family. It’s a dish that has traveled through the decades and the BBC kitchen makes this classic with a beautifully cooked chicken thigh, tomatoes, peppers, olives, carrots, mushrooms, capers and jasmine rice.
For a sweet ending, I could not resist ordering the Classic New Orleans Beignets. Six beautiful, crispy beignets served with a generous dusting of powdered sugar and a dark chocolate sauce. And sitting on the patio in the California sunshine and hanging out with a Screwball Peanut Butter Cup Martini made with Screwball Peanut Butter Whiskey, Stoli Vanilla Vodka, half & half and a chocolate sauce drizzle made me never want the alfresco afternoon to end.
There isn’t a dish that I didn’t love on the new Lunch Menu. Wait until you taste it!
GATHER FOR BRUNCH AT THE CLUB HONORING THE SPECIAL WOMEN IN THEIR LIVES
BALBOA BAY CLUB MARINA TENANTS AND APARTMENT RESIDENTS GATHER ON THE MEMBER LAWN FOR THE ANNUAL LAUNCH OF THE SUMMER SEASON PARTY AT THE CLUB
BY ALEX CHAZEN
One of my favorite BBC benefits is the reciprocal club list, where you can get the feeling of being at home at your own club while traveling – either for work or for fun. In the April issue, I highlighted some tips about my favorite reciprocal clubs in the pacific northwest (Washington Athletic Club in Seattle) and in paradise (the Outrigger Canoe Club in Honolulu).
The BBC has association with reciprocal clubs all across the country and even around the globe. In this issue, we visit a club on the east coast, The New York Athletic Club (NYAC) on 59th Street, looking out at Central Park. Housed in their famed City House, NYAC has
some of the best athletic facilities in the country and is the home club for several Olympians.
Even for those of us whose athletic pursuits are, shall we say, more leisurely, the New York Athletic Club provides a wonderful place from which a New York business week or vacation can be organized. Getting to walk around the historic building where the Heisman Trophy is given out is reward enough for some guests, but for others, its proximity to everything that you want to do in New York – from Times Square to the theater district and from 5th Avenue to the Met, all within a 10-15 minute walk.
The other big selling point is being able to take advantage of the members-only entrance
to get out of the city’s hustle and bustle to find your respite in their guest rooms above.
The first thing I do when I know I need to travel (particularly for work) is check the reciprocal club list. I know that I can almost always find somewhere that will give me a gym to work out in on the road, a quiet spot to take a call, or a place that feels just like our club here in Newport Beach.
When you do find the club that might work for you, simply contact our Club Desk at 949.630.4120 or email memberrelations@ balboabayclub.com to get a letter of introduction which you will present when you arrive at the club to obtain entrance.

BAY CLUB MEMBER, KALEIGH GILCHRIST, TWO TIME BACK-TO-BACK OLYMPIC
GOLD MEDALIST GOING FOR GOLD AGAIN
BY RYAN G. COOK
In the heart of sunny California at the Balboa Bay Club, Kaleigh Gilchrist grew up with saltwater in her veins and dreams as vast as the ocean itself. From an early age, she was captivated by the ebb and flow of the water, finding solace and purpose in its embrace.
As a child, Kaleigh was drawn to the rhythm of the water, but it wasn't until she discovered the dynamic sports of surfing and water polo that she truly found her calling. With determination as fierce as crashing waves, she dedicated herself to mastering both
sports, spending countless hours training in the ocean and pool, honing her skills and building resilience. Her journey to becoming an Olympic athlete was not without its challenges. There were setbacks, moments of doubt and waves of adversity to navigate.
The first major decision was to choose water polo over surfing and fighting for a position on the USA Senior National Team vs competing for $$ on the World Surfing League Tour. She chose water polo and through dedication and perseverance, Kaleigh's talent blossomed in the pool,
earning her two Gold Olympic Medals. She rose through the ranks, earning accolades and recognition as one of the brightest stars in the world of water polo. But for Kaleigh, the true measure of success was not in the medals or accolades, but in the impact she could make both in and out of the pool.
As an Olympic athlete, Kaleigh embraced her platform with humility and grace, using her voice to champion causes close to her heart. She became an advocate for ocean conservation, raising awareness about the importance of protecting our planet's precious marine ecosystems. Through her actions, she inspired others to join her in the fight to preserve the oceans for future generations.
Gilchrist was one of the USA Team members celebrating their Gold in South Korea when a balcony at a nightclub near the athletes' village collapsed, killing two people and creating a chaotic scene in the southern city of Gwangju. "We were having the best night ever celebrating our win, and somehow, a freak accident happened," Gilchrist told The Associated Press in a phone interview. Kaleigh sustained deep lacerations on her left leg and had to get surgery in South Korea. Luckily, she recovered and continued her journey toward representing Team USA for their third Gold back-to-back-to-back, joining the men’s basketball team as the only other team sport to win three in a row. You most likely will see Kaleigh training in one of the Bay Club pools this summer pre-Paris. You can’t miss her bright smile and signature wavy blonde hair. Sending her good luck from the members at the Balboa Bay Club!
BY MATT MORRISON
It’s one of the healthiest dangers of addiction anyone could get caught up in these days. Those that consider themselves athletes are especially vulnerable to its allure. Impressionable children to active retirees, anybody who tries the sport of pickleball could very well get hooked. Anybody who’s thought about it probably should. With seemingly sudden popularity these days, we can consider pickleball a bona fide ‘craze’ across the USA and growing around the world. With cultural impact like the hula hoop, frisbee and whiffle ball, it’s an antidote for the increasingly addicted-to-electronics
element of society.
BBC Director of Recreation Ashley Pitcock sees pickleball’s growth and likely sustaining popularity because of its multi-generational appeal and because it’s just flat-out fun.
“Kids can play it, parents can play, grandparents can play,” Pitcock points out, while likening it to the game of golf. “It’s something people can do as individuals or as a family.”
Indeed, pickleball evolved as a family backyard sport beginning in the mid-1960s. Combining elements of tennis and ping-pong, volleyball and badminton, it takes athleticism
but not too much – let’s say plenty more than ping-pong and a lot less than tennis. You’ll certainly get your exercise.
The Pritchard family of Bainbridge Island, Washington lowered a volleyball net to the ground, devised a unique playing surface resembling a miniature tennis court, then started swatting a whiffle ball back and forth with ping-pong paddles. Side-out scoring as in volleyball keeps track of the competition and each player’s mental acuity. That part can be a bit challenging. A typical game is played to 11 points, win by two of course.
Official credit for the game’s invention goes
to Joel Pritchard and friends Barney McCallum and Bill Bell, all recognized for establishing the rules and developing the sport. Mr. Pritchard would later go on to serve in the US Congress and as Lieutenant Governor of Washington State.
The kids & friends loved playing and the parents did too. The name pickleball came from the random nature of any given teammates or opponents – like a pick-up assembly of oarsmen propelling a “pickle boat” in the sport of crew. Some will hear the game was named after the family dog, but that’s not true; the Pritchard matriarch confirmed the dog was born later and ‘Pickles’ was named after the sport.
Pickleball’s popularity caught on around pockets of the Pacific Northwest and steadily seeped out among the masses for more than half a century. Paddles evolved and the original whiffle ball was supplanted by a more durable plastic pure-pickleball. People were getting serious about the game. Warm weather climates were especially fertile to its growth, with Southern California and Hawaii among the first to foster wide appeal. On the islands, they call it ‘pukaball.’
For its nearly 60-year history, most people would have no idea what the game of pickleball is, with more sporty types maybe having a vague idea. Now it’s recognized as the fastestgrowing recreation sport in the country with roughly five million players.
“(The popularity) really started to boom around the pandemic years,” says Pitcock. “It
started out big in the desert and has made its way into all communities around here. People just love playing.”
At the BBC, Ashley and recreation manager Anthony Pezzetti were taking note of the trend. Earlier this year, Pezetti started up a program for interested picklers, as he had previously at a club in Colorado. Earlier this year, they set aside a block of time on Wednesday evenings, set up two nets in the club gymnasium and outlined two courts. A dozen or more dropins showed up regularly and since most were beginners, staff recruited others to host clinics and informal lessons. Soon, they expanded the drop-in schedule to include Saturdays too.
“The members honestly drove us to do it,” Pitcock is happy to admit. “They’ve been waiting and they want it.”
Last month, the Inaugural Balboa Bay Club Pickleball Tournament was held on Saturday, May 18th. The one-day double-elimination tournament drew teams from the core group of BBC members, most of whom started out together learning the game.
“Anyone can play this sport, it doesn’t matter how old you are or young you are,” says Leyton Bond, one of the highly-competitive young tykes in the group. “My dad plays a lot and he made me try it and I’m like, OK, it’s pretty fun.”
Bond and his buddy Val Del Signore have excelled among the group of novice players, teaming up to take on all comers. The pair of 20-somethings in apparently really good shape have fast established themselves as a team to be reckoned with.
“The more you play, the more you want to play. And the better you are, the more fun it is,” Del Signore says.
“I get to play with my good friend, and we get to whoop some butt,” Bond adds with a ‘bring-it-on’ grin.
Blain Skinner and Kerry Young are members that have been friends for 20 years and found new common ground after not seeing a lot of each other in a while.
“We got reacquainted playing pickleball here,” Skinner explains while underscoring the social aspects of their new sporting passion. “We met a couple that are new members, we had a couple of competitive matches with them and made friends. It’s so much fun!”
On the more senior side, long-time members Frank and Tish Briney have taken it up and can’t put it down. Frank saw the pickleball promotion sign in the BBC lobby and didn’t have to do much convincing to get his wife to go along. Now they’re regulars at the weekly drop-ins.
“We can do it together. It’s great exercise, yet not too much,” says Tish, “and I feel like it’s a pretty safe sport.”
“You get better every time,” adds their friend M’Liss Kane. “Everybody cares about it, but they also care about each other. People are always giving tips and want to help you get better.”
It’s the combination of competition, fitness and camaraderie that makes the fast-growing sport of pickleball a passion worth getting hooked on.
INSIDE THE RARIFIED WORLD OF NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB
Robin Shelton CCM, PGA Master Professional General Manager
Newport
Beach Country Club
We do a lot of really cool things here at the club, for members and for our employees. One of my favorite things that we do each year is award scholarships to our employees and their dependents.
Scholarships provide financial support for students to help pay for a college degree or trade school certification. For many of our employees and their dependents, these funds allow students to obtain an education they might not otherwise be able to access and/or dramatically reduce the debts that come from obtaining a college degree.
This past year, Newport Beach Country Club awarded $157,000 worth of grants to 15 employees or their dependents who are pursing degrees at campuses ranging from those in the University of California and California State University systems to schools as far away as Cornell University in New York. Our employee scholarship grant winners pursue degrees in marketing, business, nursing, aerospace engineering and more. Some have worked with us for only a year while others who have worked here for 30 years are now able to help their dependents.
I hope you’ll consider supporting or playing in the NBCC Employee Scholarship Foundation Tournament, where every contribution goes 100% to scholarship grants. Details of this year’s tournament are as follows:
NBCC EMPLOYEE SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION TOURNAMENT
Monday, July 8 1 p.m. shotgun
Hosted BBQ lunch, bar and reception $250 per member | $325 per guest
The format for this year’s tournament is one best ball of the foursome (gross and net). Members can add an employee to their group for an additional $250 donation to the scholarship foundation. You’ll also get to meet some of our scholarship winners.
Members can sign up for the tournament on the NBCC App or by calling the golf shop. We have a number of employees that could help stack your team, provide additional laughs or simply allow you to get to know one of our employees that much better.
Thank you for supporting the NBCC Employee Scholarship Foundation and our employees.
All the best, Robin Shelton

CARLO BORUNDA, DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION AT NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB, REVEALS HOW COLD, WET AND WINDY CONDITIONS CAN IMPACT YOUR GAME—AND HOW TO OVERCOME THEM.
BY ASHLEY RYAN
When you wake in the morning and look out the window only to be met with a view of rain falling and trees waving in the wind, it’s likely that the first thing you’ll do is cancel your plans to hit the golf course. But what do you do when you’re already in the middle of a round when stormy weather blows in?
Things like wind and rain can have a very
adverse effect on your technique on the course. No matter how great of a golfer you are, bad weather can be really hard to overcome as it can take everything you’ve practiced and flip it upside down. But you can also learn tips that can help you combat cold, wet or windy conditions.
“Each golfer is challenged to control the flight of their golf ball with each stroke. When abnormal weather conditions are present, controlling the golf ball becomes extremely

challenging,” says Carlo Borunda, the director of instruction at Newport Beach Country Club. “Less control equals higher scores, which can deter many golfers from playing on days where the forecast isn’t ideal. With the proper equipment, playing in the elements can still be a very enjoyable day of golf.”
Here, Borunda shares tips for the conditions a golfer may face and the importance of learning to weather the storm.
BAY WINDOW: Why is it important to learn how to overcome obstacles presented by difficult weather conditions?
CARLO BORUNDA: Playing solely when the forecast is good may significantly reduce the number of rounds of golf you play. Wind, heat, cold and rain all provide challenges for golfers to maintain their concentration while on the course. Golfers need to learn how to adjust their swing and expectations as they play in less than favorable weather conditions. Difficult weather

conditions can add stress and uncertainty to each swing. Water on the golf ball increases drag and reduces lift, influencing how the ball flies. Moisture from morning dew or rain can have a significant impact on the golf ball’s performance, limiting carry distance. Middle to long irons will spin more, whereas the more lofted irons will spin less. Using a towel to dry the club face before each shot is essential for reducing this effect.
BW: What are some of the worst conditions golfers may face?
CB: A day that is bitterly cold, windy and raining would be at the top of most golfers’ lists. In general, the cold can be managed by wearing extra layers of clothes, but when wind and rain enter the picture, the day becomes more about endurance than fun. Having a day like this once is enough to make the ordinary golfer prefer a good movie or shopping with their spouse to a day on the course. Ironically, many golfers travel to remote destinations like Oregon’s Bandon Dunes or overseas to Ireland or England to play where this type of weather is considered a typical day on the links.
BW: What are some tips for beating the heat?
CB: Early morning tee times are the best solution for beating the heat. Staying hydrated becomes critical when the temperature rises. It’s important to remember to protect your skin throughout the day by applying and reapplying sunscreen. For the golfer who chooses to walk, it is advisable to use an umbrella to protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays. You may also protect your skin by wearing slip-on arm sleeves, a lightweight longsleeve shirt and a wide-brimmed hat. There are several advantages for the golfer as the days heat up. The golf swing is less restricted when there are
fewer layers of clothes on, giving you the ability to swing faster. It is much easier to warm up and maintain the flexibility of the body’s muscles throughout the day. In warmer weather, the golf ball will also go farther due to a decrease in the air’s density. All of this can add up to an additional 5 to 10 yards of carry. The one true drawback is that golf courses become increasingly busy in the summer months.
BW: How can you fight against the effects of the wind?
CB: The golf ball will naturally spin more and travel higher into the wind and lower with less spin downwind. As the spin of the golf ball increases, either due to an open club face at impact or when using a more lofted golf club, the ball loses carry distance and rolls less after landing. An upwind shot may lose nearly 10 yards of carry, while a downwind shot would only gain about 5 yards of carry under the same wind conditions. Because of the differing club face orientations that each delivers at impact, the golfer who is more comfortable playing a draw ball flight has a distance and accuracy advantage over the golfer who likes to play a fade on windy days. The temptation is to change your golf swing in windier conditions, but that is not advisable for most golfers. A better solution is to play a less lofted golf club when playing into the wind and more loft with the wind. The more essential thing to remember while playing in windy conditions is that the dispersion of your golf shots will be greater than when playing in calm conditions. This is crucial when considering whether to play a shot when water or out-of-bounds markers are present. Remember that when the ball lands in one of these penalty areas, the golfer will incur one to two additional strokes, but with some clever
short game, the golf ball that lands in the rough or behind the trees might still result in a par.
BW: What are some ways to succeed when the temperature fluctuates more than 30 degrees during your round?
CB: Temperatures that change by more than 30 degrees are difficult, especially if you begin your round in warmer conditions and then the temperature drops dramatically in the afternoon. The key is to layer the items you wear to accommodate changes in temperature. Another thing to keep in mind is that, when the temperature drops, the golf ball will carry less. Embracing this challenge with a positive mindset and proper preparation is an effective approach to getting the best results.
BW: How can golfers be more prepared to face these difficult conditions?
CB: Many times, golfers are not prepared to play in difficult conditions, because when the opportunity to practice in inclement weather arises, they choose to stay indoors. Although I completely understand this mentality, the wiser choice is to make yourself strong and head to the driving range. Detailed notes that include the effects on carry distance and shot dispersion under different temperatures and wind conditions will prove valuable in future rounds of golf. If available, the use of a more advanced launch monitor, like the GC Quad or TrackMan, are essential tools to help record accurate data. If you opt to forgo this type of preparation, showing up early the day of your round to practice at the driving range to learn how much the weather is impacting your golf swing—and, ultimately, the flight of the golf ball—is an acceptable plan.
BW: What are some tips for strengthening your mental focus and not focusing on what can go wrong in difficult conditions?
CB: When playing golf, I prefer to take a more optimistic approach. I understand how easily your thoughts might go to a negative place, but I encourage you to trust in your preparation. Sometimes you will surprise yourself and pull off a beautiful shot that you can reference the next time you’re in a similar situation. Remember that you have greater influence over where the golf ball goes than the conditions you’re facing. Use your imagination and skills to achieve a positive outcome.
BW: Anything else to add?
CB: The weather can make the game more enjoyable. Modeling the enthusiasm of a child who is often excited to play in the rain can be key to playing your best golf.
DISCOVER HOW NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB HAS REVAMPED ITS SWIMMING POOL DECK JUST AHEAD OF THE SUMMER SEASON.
BY ASHLEY RYAN
When summertime rolls around, there’s no doubt that the endless sunshine and warm temperatures create the perfect setting for pooltime fun. Whether you’re ready to dive in and make a splash in the water or simply want to soak up the sun while lounging poolside on the deck, a trip to the Newport Beach Country Club pool can be exhilarating no matter your age or ability. And now, with the pool area undergoing a recent refresh and renovation, there is even more to enjoy.
“The upscale look [around the pool] will give members more of a resort vibe while still having the club/hospitality mindset and environment,” says Bianca Gillett, director of fitness and recreation at Newport Beach Country Club. “It is the best of both worlds.”
Read on to discover what changes you can expect to see at the pool this summer.
While the regular swimming pool has been untouched by this renovation, many other pieces of the NBCC pool area have recently undergone improvements. One of the biggest changes has been the restoration of the kiddie pool, which has gotten all-new coping, or edging, around the sides as well as brand-new tiling on the base and sides of the pool.
The cabanas have also been refreshed, with the old ones having been removed and replaced by five new spaces in which to relax and keep cool by the pool.
Elsewhere, the space is getting a new
outdoor fitness area as well, adding to the recreation focus of this refreshed area. Fitness classes, private instruction or individual workouts can all be held here, with audio speakers set up to play music or verbal instruction throughout. In addition, the design incorporates plenty of sun protection—both above and on the sides—to keep members safe while still allowing them to work up a sweat with the ocean breeze weaving by.
In addition, you’ll find more umbrellas to stay shaded this summer as well as new tables and an amenity station that provides towels, chair coverings and sunscreen. Stop by now for a bite to eat or to relax in the newly refreshed space or be sure
to keep an eye on the club’s calendar to learn when you can enjoy dive-in movies, the cardboard boat race or Swim Team competitions this year.
These changes may not seem like much, but they are sure to make the NBCC pool area even more enjoyable for members, their families, staff and beyond. The club is always striving to be better and to provide a better member experience throughout the property.
“Newport Beach Country Club does an excellent job of making sure all amenities and departments are well-kept,” Gillett notes. “We have a high standard of excellence. Last year, we noticed the pool could use some
TLC. We are happy that we will have the pool resembling the rest of the club—and what better time than summer? The time all the families at NBCC come to have quality time and some fun in the sun.”
The project was a joint effort between Gillett and Sarah Sanchez, the club’s director of food and beverage, and allowed the duo to explore their creativity while ensuring the new pool area is designed in a way that will enhance what members can do when they’re here at NBCC.
“We have a lot of wonderful families at the club, [and] I remember my time with my family at the pool while growing up,” Gillett adds, “so I am excited to see our members have that experience, too.”
FIND OUT WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE NEW MENU AT THE NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB POOL CAFÉ.
BY ASHLEY RYAN
Summertime is nearly here and with it comes new offerings galore at Newport Beach Country Club. As the sun takes its rightful place in the Southern California sky following a winter of rainy weather and the temperatures continue to heat up, it won’t be long before members and their families start seeking outdoor experiences to enjoy at the club.
One of the most exciting elements of the NBCC property this summer is the remodel of the pool area, which debuted over
Memorial Day weekend. While you can now stop by to relax in a poolside cabana, take a fitness class in the alfresco workout space, grab a plush towel from the amenity station or dip your little one’s toes in the water of a renovated kiddie pool, one of the biggest highlights is the debut of this summer’s pool café menu.
Designed by Chef de Cuisine Eric Vierling and Sous Chef Devin Enciso, the available offerings range from a light snack to a hearty meal. “We are excited to … [present] some amazing additions to the
pool experience to go along with the always amazing programming from the NBCC recreation team,” Enciso says. Fuel up for some fun in the Newport sun.
No matter if you’re active or lounging by the pool—the sun takes a lot out of you. As such, you’ll want to make sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and eat regularly to ensure you have the necessary energy to enjoy the day. Luckily, the new pool café menu has
something for everyone. “All of the favorites from years past return, along with some new and delicious items,” Vierling explains.
Light bites are always ideal for the summer season. If you’re in the mood for a salad, you can opt for the classic Caesar or the savory barbecue salad. But the chefs recommend a refreshing new offering, the summer salad, which features mixed greens topped in juicy peaches, candied walnuts and crumbles of creamy goat cheese all drizzled in a citrus vinaigrette.
While burgers and hot dogs are traditional fare for summertime—especially by the pool—Enciso says there is so much more to discover on the refreshed menu.
“Try one of our new options,” he suggests, “like the butter-poached lobster and crab grilled cheese sandwich or the chicken caprese panini.” The fresh seafood, poultry and produce used to craft these handhelds will have you singing their praises throughout the warmer months.
There are fun options for children as well, with snacks such as chips and salsa or a bowl of fruit served with vanilla yogurt on the menu to tempt little tummies. If your kiddo has worked up an appetite in the pool, you can also choose something a little more substantial, like the baskets of chicken tenders or french fries.
And don’t worry if it’s just a sweet tooth you’re trying to satisfy. Fulfill a craving for something sugary with fresh-baked cookies or cool down with some ice cream. You can also enjoy the best of both worlds with a decadent ice cream cookie sandwich.
As we delve into the summer season, keep your eyes peeled for the pool café’s current hours. No matter which menu option you choose, you’re in for a treat with delicious fare and fresh ingredients to enjoy throughout the day. “It’s time to shake off all the rainy weather and lean full force into what’s going to be a sunny and exhilarating summer,” Vierling adds. Bon appétit!

JOSE IBARRA JR., A MEMBER OF THE OUTSIDE SERVICES TEAM, ENSURES THAT EVERYTHING IS READY TO GO ONCE GOLFERS ARRIVE AT NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB.
BY ASHLEY RYAN
Jose Ibarra Jr. became part of the Newport Beach Country Club 16 years ago in an act of kismet. He had just lost his job at a plumbing company and his dad worked at the club, so he encouraged him to apply. Apply he did, and he got hired in the outside services department to assist members on and off the course.
“I just wanted to try something new,” he explained. “I didn’t know anything about golf when I started working here. The members and pro shop staff, they taught
me everything.”
That was back at the beginning of 2008, and he has since picked up plenty of knowledge about the game of golf, the course itself and the members who frequent it. A dedicated employee through and through, Ibarra is usually at the property by 4:30 a.m. He gets busy making sure everything is set for the day’s first tee time and that golfers can set out on the course when they first arrive.
His tasks on and off the course include assisting members with valet parking, organizing the bag room and cart barn, overseeing the driving range and chipping green, and ensuring that everything is set up properly. “I have everything ready for the members when they are just showing up, ready to go, to play golf,” he adds.
In light of having to learn in a very hands-on way, Ibarra has remained committed to his position and to soaking up all of the information he could over the years. “I’m just looking to do my job better and better every day,” he reveals. “… I love it here. The members here, they are very special people. … They treat me not like an employee, [but] like family.”
Although Ibarra doesn’t have plans to retire anytime soon, he says that, when he does retire, he would like to get a home in the city of Monterrey, Mexico, which is a few hours south of the Texas border town of Laredo.
When he’s not working, Ibarra is likely at home working on his house. He enjoys doing plumbing work and other maintenance to ensure it’s in good shape
and to stay busy. He also enjoys spending time with his wife and kids.
“When I need something, she’s just always by my side,” he says of his wife, Cecilia. “And my kids, too.” The couple has a son named Jose Francisco and a daughter named Angela.
“I’m just blessed to have my wife and kids, … and blessed to work in this club. I’m looking to work for many more years here,” he adds. If you see Ibarra out and about, be sure to strike up a conversation and let him know how much you appreciate his hard work.
Soft ocean breezes, warm sunshine, those long, lazy days of June. Is there a better time than summer to entertain your family and friends alfresco? Here at Barclay Butera Interiors, we love to take it outdoors. For decades, Barclay has been approaching outdoor design the same as he does his magnificent interiors. In fact, he refers to these spaces as “the fifth room.” According to Butera, “Outdoor living is using the space that you have to ensure the comfort of your guests; with cozy conversation areas, wonderful places to barbecue or simply
have a lovely charcuterie plate and a glass of wine.” We like to keep outdoor furniture functional, glamorous, and comfortable. Make sure to add magical lighting to set the mood, and there are so many music capabilities now to pipe in fabulous tunes to set the vibe. As far as gardens, I favor white roses and gardenias. I think the simple mix of green and white keeps everything fresh with almost a neutral background. Whether it is a porch, deck, patio, or lanai, these are the months to enjoy outdoor entertaining.
