Bruce Cook Editor
Dear Reader,
At election time I’m sure you’ve heard someone declare, “If that candidate wins, I’m moving to (fill in the blank… Timbuctoo?).” Guess what? There’s no place to go. Despite our challenges, no nation holds a candle above this often flawed and struggling democracy we called America.
When our forward-thinking citizens claim that we must shift focus from a national lens to a global perspective, I ask for a list of nations worldwide practicing global diversity and cooperation. That list leaves out Russia, China, India, Pakistan, all of the Middle East, less Israel, all of Central and South America, all of the African continent, and most of the rest of Asia including Japan.
Simply, the USA is the only democratic global power representing all races, religions, creeds, national origins, and political ideologies on the planet. Even Western Europe, for the most part, while ideologically in accord with U.S. foreign policy, remains largely provincial and homogenous culturally and racially.
What does this mean? It means America struggles to find balance, struggles to agree on serious and sublime matters alike. We step on each other’s toes. We punch one another in the gut. Yes, we fight hard. And guess what else? It has always been that way. The Founders were ready to draw swords and duel in the cobblestone streets. There were brothers against brothers. Ben Franklin disowned his son and they never spoke again over political differences between the new colonies and English rule. Every challenge forward was marked by great debate and severe divide. The Civil War surely stands out above most everything else as a lesson in both the strengths and fragility of American democracy.
Through it all, we reach July 4, 2022 as one large complex American puzzle; some pieces missing, others well-worn and reliable. The most important piece of the puzzle is the resolve, resiliency and resounding faith of the American people in the ideals of this nation and its Constitution. If we strive to make America a great and free nation, the foundation begins, and always has begun, with the value of the individual to live a life of purpose, dignity, and courage.
In the July issue of Bay Window these values are on display in our local youth featured in two prominent insertions in the magazine. First, please enjoy the coverage of the 2022 Balboa Bay 1221 Scholarship Awards featured on page 20. Twenty-four exemplary high school graduating seniors shared $124,000 in grant funding to aid in their future educational pursuits. The message carried in speeches given by the honored students was clear. Gratitude was bestowed upon parents, teachers, friends, and mentors for the support needed to excel, overcome challenges and grow. Dedication to hard work turned dreams into reality.
Second, columnist Carole Pickup profiles the top scholars in her essay on page 64 revealing the personal courage and passion of each individual student.
What better example of American true grit for the 4th of July 2022 than the promise of our children?
For 246 years we’ve perfected the American experiment. The quest and the glory rolls on.
Raise the flag. Celebrate!

The Center is not throwing away its shot at continuing to make an impact in Southern California through arts education and accessible programming. Every benefit ticket and package purchased will directly support the goal to engage the Southern California community in new and exciting ways through the unique power of live performance and an array of inspiring programs.

Featuring a score that blends hiphop, jazz, R&B and Broadway, Hamilton has taken the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and created a revolutionary moment in theatre—a musical that has had a profound impact on culture, politics, and education. With book, music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler, and musical supervision and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire, Hamilton is based on Ron Chernow’s acclaimed biography. It has won Tony®, Grammy®, and Olivier Awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and an unprecedented
special citation from the Kennedy Center Honors.
The evening will begin at 5:30 pm with a pre-show celebration, food and live entertainment followed by the Hamilton performance in Segerstrom Hall at 7:30 pm and a special behind-the-scenes champagne toast and photo opp for invited levels. A variety of Benefit Performance packages are available, starting at $700.

EXEMPLARY GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS FROM THE NEWPORT-MESA DISTRICT HONORED WITH ANNUAL BALBOA BAY 1221 SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS
The American Dream was alive, well and on full display recently as the 2022 Balboa Bay 1221 Club Scholarships were presented to 24 graduating seniors from the Newport-Mesa high schools. Grants were bestowed upon a curated selection of applicants nominated by high school counselors from Newport Harbor, Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa and Estancia High Schools. The nominees were then extensively interviewed by a panel of professional and dedicated Balboa Bay Club judges led by chairman of the BBC Board, John Wortmann. A large field of applicants, all with exceptional credentials and impressive academic records were narrowed to the 24 award winners.
One of the panel judges, Newport Beach philanthropist Catherine Thyen, commented, “The task was difficult, every student was exceptional.” Wortmann, who also served as master of ceremonies for the scholarship presentation and dinner held in the grand ballroom of the Balboa Bay Resort on May 31, added, “The final selection came down to the impressions made during the personal interviews. We evaluated every aspect of each student’s profile including financial need, community service, athletic and academic performance and more, including less tangible factors such as perceived character, attitude and values expressed.” The full judging panel included Devon Martin, Char Arm-
strong, Leticia Rice, Noel Hamilton, Heather Dickerson and Michelle Barto.
The evening celebration was produced under the direction of BBC GM Leticia Rice with executive staff members Aaron Trent and Melanie Hertrick. Scholarship winners and their families were invited to share in a cocktail and light dinner reception prior to the ceremony. Students, families and special guests joined members of a ladies’ auxiliary of the Balboa Bay Club called “The 1221,” named for the iconic Coast Highway address of the BBC. Funds raised come from the women of 1221 along with significant financial support from the Pickup-Martin family underwriting the annual grants. $124,000 was

WHEN PATRIOTISM WAS AT ITS PEAK
A LOOK BACK AT NEWPORT HISTORY IN JULY OF 1942
BY MATT MORRISON
The summer of ‘42 was eighty years ago, and it remains a most patriotic time in our nation’s history when America was arguably never more united. It had been eighty years since the height of the Civil War, and our greatest generation was coming of age, six months into World War II. Newport Beach was coming of age too and served its role in the struggle against tyranny around the globe.
The all-encompassing conflict was still very much in doubt and would continue for another three years. With the Nazis advancing in every direction, the war in Europe was raging on three fronts. In the Pacific, the US Navy was just barely turning the tide against the Empire of Japan after a pivotal naval air victory in the Battle of Midway.
Newport Beach in July of 1942 was evolving from a sleepy coastal fishing and farming community to include a budding boat building industry and naval support depot. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor only six months earlier, coastal residents on the mainland were on high alert for further air raids and, even more fearsome, the very real threat of aggression from unseen enemy submarines.
“I remember my dad telling me, the Women’s League had rotating shifts of lookouts that would sit up in the bell tower of the church here on the peninsula and watch for Japanese and even German subs,” recalls Mark Mowery, a native of Newport Beach and lifetime family membership holder at the Balboa Bay Club.
“All ocean facing windows around town had to be blacked out with curtains and the Christmas boat parade had to be cancelled for a couple years,” he noted.
Mowery is the proprietor of Allied Yacht & Ship on the Newport peninsula, an evolution of a family business his grandfather Ned Hill started when he bought Ackerman Boat Yard in 1938. Ned and Dora Hill parlayed
their lumber business in Pasadena into a military contract to build Navy wooden hull tugboats and launch craft on the Orange County shoreline. A noted civic leader, Dora Hill went on to lead the local PTA, was a grand jury forewoman, and was elected to the City Council before becoming the first woman to serve as Mayor of Newport Beach in 1954.
The Ackerman yard operated on the Lido peninsula where the Newport Harbor Shipyard is located today. Others filling naval contracts include the nearby South Coast Shipyard, a critical supplier of torpedo boats, minesweepers, submarine chasers, and air-sea rescue boats. The shipyard continued to contract with the Navy until 1955 and ceased operations in 1963.
One of the most notable ships still afloat on the Newport Harbor was originally built as a Navy minesweeper. The Wild Goose gained far greater fame after the war as Hollywood icon John Wayne’s personal yacht. Today, it’s the Newport Beach flagship for City Cruises Anchored by Hornblower, running party and dinner cruises three to four times per week from its mooring on the Mariner Mile.
“We’re very proud to have the Wild Goose in our fleet,” says Chase Corum, Senior Captain at Hornblower. “We try to keep everything as close to the way John Wayne had it.”
It’s a particular source of pride for Corum when he’s the pilot. A local kid, he got his maritime start with the Balboa Island ferry.
From Newport Harbor High, through Orange Coast College (‘a proud Pirate’), to UC Santa Cruz and Chapman Law School, his true calling brought him back to the water. After a few years as a practicing attorney, he returned to the sea with City Cruises.
Corum relates the history of the Wild Goose from its construction at a Ballard, Washington shipyard to its service as a minesweeper around the Aleutian Islands off the coast of Alaska. As her third private owner, ‘Duke’ bought the ship in 1962 and dubbed it Wild Goose. For the remainder of his life, the yacht was the actor’s personal floating playground where he hosted celebrities and other distinguished guests including two U.S. Presidents (Nixon & Reagan) for memorable, if not unmentionable, shenanigans.
Now converted to a dinner cruise ship, Wild Goose still retains a lot of on-board effects as popular show pieces, including Duke’s poker table, a vintage diving helmet, and his prized print of the Clarkson Frederick Stanfield painting ‘The Battle of Trafalgar.’ One more fun fact Corum points out; Wild Goose is the sister ship to Jacque Cousteau’s famed Calypso, both built as identical Navy minesweepers at the same shipyard in 1943.
Four score was that many years ago when patriotism ran higher than it has at any time in America ever since. The Summer of ‘42 left a legacy not only in a popular 1971 film of that title, but in the development of Newport Beach as a community, the foundation of
its marine industry and the history behind Wild Goose, John Wayne, Ned & Dora Hill extending to their great grandson Matthew Mowery, now serving as a Marine Corps aviator. Perhaps in another 20 years, America can recapture more of its common purpose and celebrate a Fourth of July more cohesively in the next summer of ‘42.

Dear NBCC Members,
The first known occurrence where people gathered for a concert-type event took place at a violinist’s home in London in 1672. Six years later, in 1678, a man began to organize weekly concerts in Clerkenwell, where an annual subscription of 10 shillings per year would allow an attendee to see as many concerts as they wanted.
In addition, the late 17th century would also see concerts going to the people. In France, concerts were performed in the homes of nobility, for nobility only. The first known public concerts took place in France as well, often held on religious holidays when the opera was closed, and became a model for other concert societies throughout the world.
On July 10, the club will host our own concert on the Oasis Lawn. This show, with a street/family fair theme, will be our summer Member Appreciation event and is complimentary for all members—no shillings or nobility required.
Flashback Heart Attack, an '80s cover band that puts on an incredible show with high levels of energy and passion, will headline the Family Fair and Concert. The band plays close to 100 shows per year and headlines major events for leading Fortune 500 companies and charity fundraisers worldwide.
Flashback Heart Attack has played events with talented artists and groups such as Clint Black, Sammy Hagar, Sheryl Crow, Night Ranger, Extreme, The Foo Fighters, Juliette Lewis, Steel Panther, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Violent Femmes, Billy Squire, The Beach Boys, KC & The Sunshine Band, Vince Neil of Mötley Crüe, Daughtry, Collective Soul and Maroon 5.
We are sure that our members will love them!
The schedule and details of the night are:
5-7 p.m. — Family Fair and Carnival Games
7-9 p.m. — Flashback Heart Attack Concert
We look forward to seeing you at the Member Appreciation Family Fair and Concert!
All the best, Robin Shelton

FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS, FROYLAN SIGALA HAS BEEN MAKING REPAIRS AT NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB
BY ASHLEY RYAN
Although Froylan Sigala spends most of his time in the basement, away from the members, you wouldn’t know it by how he talks about his job: He loves working at Newport Beach Country Club, and enjoys the solitude his job provides as it gives him the chance to focus on the task at hand.
Sigala’s task—maintaining and repairing the property’s golf carts—is something he has done for over a decade now. But that wasn’t always the case. When he first came to the club, roughly 34 years ago, he started out working on the golf course maintenance team, where he would repair heavy pieces of equipment such as lawn mowers.
His two uncles who worked at NBCC initially told him about the position, and he flourished in the role, having earned various Team Member of the Month awards during his tenure. Although he was also making repairs when he first started, Sigala learned to work on the golf carts from a colleague named Bill, a former maintenance mechanic who handled much of the club’s golf course machinery. With his encouragement and mentorship, Sigala was able to step into the new role with ease.
When work is slow or his tasks for the day are finished, Sigala also helps in the outside services department, which gives him a chance to interact with the members, something he really enjoys. “It’s private here, so all of the employees and the members are the same, so I can get to know every member compared to other places where there are different players,” he explains. When working in outside services, Sigala helps members carry their bags or with anything else they might need, allowing him to create connections and build memories with them along the way.
Sigala came to the United States from his original home, Durango, Mexico, in the late 1980s in search of a better life for him and his family. He has been married to his wife, Maria, for 45 years, and the couple has a son (who now lives in Mexico), three daughters and five grandchildren.
When he’s not at work, Sigala enjoys spending time with his family as well as playing golf. His family also owns a home in Tecate, Mexico—located in Baja California just south of the California border—where he and his wife like to vacation when they have the time.
Although he may not always be out and about at the club, Sigala’s skills and work ethic are indispensable, making him an invaluable member of the maintenance team. If you see him around, be sure to greet him and thank him for his 34 years of service here at NBCC.
Celebrating Consistency
FOLLOW THESE TIPS AND STAY PERSISTENT WITH YOUR TRAINING TO LEARN HOW TO HIT YOUR IRONS THE SAME DISTANCE WHILE ON THE COURSE.
BY ASHLEY RYAN
With golf, consistency is often key. It can help you reach the green, aid you in directing your shot and ensure that your overall game goes smoothly. But one thing is for sure: Practice makes perfect and, without practice, there’s no chance at maintaining consistency. Luckily, practicing your hit with your irons can have a huge impact.
According to Carlo Borunda, director of instruction at Newport Beach Country Club, developing this technique in particular can help enhance your assertiveness on the course. “It is essential that golfers develop a consistent iron swing so they can confidently play the game of golf,” he says. Here, Borunda reveals the best tips and tricks for learning to hit your irons the same distance.
BAY WINDOW: Why is it important for a golfer to become more consistent with the way they swing their irons?
CARLO BORUNDA: Your irons are used to produce more accurate shots, which helps you land the golf ball closer to the different hole locations on the greens. A consistent iron swing will allow you to develop control of the golf ball in order to produce the shape of the ball flight and predict the distance that the ball will travel.
BW: How pivotal is it for golfers to consistently control the distance each iron produces?
CB: The distance control with your irons is one of the more important elements to playing the game well. Each time you set up to swing a golf club, you are counting on your swing and the golf club to get the ball close to your intended target. The distance the ball travels, the trajectory and the backspin that is created at the moment of contact [all work together to] allow you to produce a good result. Golfers need to spend enough time on the driving range prior to playing to help them develop the technique and feel for a repeatable golf swing.
BW: How can golfers improve their distance control with each iron?
CB: Periodically, you should use a launch monitor to help you understand your swing speed, the carry distance and backspin you produce with each iron. This is important data because it allows you to understand how the golf ball is responding. … The backspin numbers are important because you need to know if you are generating enough with each iron. The shorter irons naturally produce more backspin, which is why they fly higher, straighter and roll less once they land on the green. If you are struggling to generate enough backspin with your longer irons, you may need to switch to hybrids.
BW: What are some things to keep in mind when trying to hit consistent distances with your irons?
CB: Alignment is one of the most important fundamentals to review. Make sure to … practice with an alignment stick at your feet—otherwise your technique will likely need some form of compensation to get the ball to fly toward your target. Golfers need to review the fundamentals of posture, grip and alignment in every practice session. Your fundamentals are key to maintaining a repeatable swing. Producing a consistent swing tempo is also high on the list of skills to routinely work on.
BW: What tips or tricks do you have for accomplishing a consistent swing tempo?
CB: Many golfers spend too much time trying to hit each golf club as far as they can. A better goal is to focus on making solid contact. When you see a golf professional swing a golf club, we all marvel at how far the ball flies with the driver. … I am more impressed with how they can produce different distances with the same iron. For instance, I’ve seen Tiger Woods hit a 9-iron 180 yards and also 130 yards in the same round of golf. He is one of the best iron players of all time, because he practices and has learned how to control his swing speed. I recommend that all golfers learn to swing at different swing speeds as they practice. You will notice that you are more consistent when swinging between 70-80% of full speed.
BW: What challenges will golfers typically face when trying to slow down their tempo?
CB: The typical mistake is to shorten the length of your swing when trying to slow down your tempo. Another common error is to decelerate through impact. Your goal should be to develop a fluid rhythm in your backswing and then accelerate the club in your downswing. When done correctly, the ideal ratio is 3:1, where your backswing is three times slower than your downswing speed.
BW: Are there any specific tools or drills that can help with this?
CB: I highly recommend using the Blast Motion [golf swing analyzer] … to help you practice your swing tempo. … The Orange Whip trainer is a[nother] great tool to help develop a complete backswing and finish while training your swing tempo.
A great tempo drill is to rehearse your swing from a completed finish position. From here, you will then swing the golf club
backward to a completed backswing position. It is important to take enough of these partial swings until you can feel a consistent rhythm. The next step is to swing the golf club forward, making sure to accelerate into a balanced finish.
BW: Do you have any equipment recommendations to help golfers improve their consistency?
CB: Every golfer who is trying to improve should go through a club fitting with their golf coach or a certified club fitter. During your club fitting session, you will learn how the different shaft flexes and club head designs will help you make your best swings and generate better ball flight control. … Shafts [that] … are too light or too heavy both affect your ability to swing in balance. When your balance is negatively affected, so is your ability to make solid contact with the golf ball.
BW: How can golfers ensure that they’re making good contact with the ball to hit consistently?
CB: You can place impact tape on each iron to demonstrate where you are making contact on the club face. If the contact is toward the outer edge, you are probably standing too far from the golf ball. The opposite is true if your contact is located more on the inside near the
hosel, where the club is connected to the shaft. Your posture and shoulder alignment also are important setup elements to consider when your contact is inconsistent. Poor posture will limit your ability to maintain your center as you make your golf swing. An easy way to check this skill is to have someone take a picture of you in … position prior to making a golf swing. If your upper back is rounded, you are more than likely dropping your chin. If your lower back is rounded, you are likely placing too much weight on your heels. Make sure you feel your balance more toward the arches of your feet.
BW: What are some tips for establishing the proper distance you should be standing from the golf ball?
CB: Without a golf club in your hands, stand tall with your head and hips in one straight line. From here, place your hands on your hips so you can make sure you feel [that] the forward tilt is originating from the hip area. Your tush should move slightly backward as your upper body tilts slightly forward. Your arms should now be allowed to hang directly below your shoulders. This is the correct sequence that will help you confidently swing the golf club in a consistent manner.
Healing Hydration
LEARN SOME HEALTHY TIPS AND TRICKS TO ENSURE YOU’RE DRINKING PLENTY OF WATER ON HOT SUMMER DAYS.
BY ASHLEY RYAN
There’s no better time than the heart of summer to make sure you’re practicing good hydration habits. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adults in the United States drink roughly 44 ounces of water a day—not very much considering the recommended amount is half of your body weight in ounces.
According to Bianca Gillett, director of recreation and fitness at NBCC, it’s crucial to get enough water to help regulate body temperature, prevent disease and infection, and ensure that organs and joints are functioning as they should.
Read on to learn how you can maintain good hydration this summer.
THE SIMPLE TRUTH
“It is especially important during summertime because, when we are put in hot or humid weather, our bodies tend to sweat more, which causes us to lose more water than we normally do,” she explains.
The concept of hydration is a simple one: As our bodies are made up of roughly 60% water, it’s a no-brainer that we need to keep plenty of it in our diets. In fact, water is what helps deliver nutrients from what we eat to our cells and helps our body function as it’s supposed to.
When there is a severe lack of hydration in our
bodies, our cells are unable to function, which explains why we’re only able to last a few days without it. If you don’t drink enough on a daily basis, you’re sure to face symptoms such as diarrhea, sweating and vomiting as your body tries to make it through without this necessary substance.
The simple act of drinking half your weight in ounces of water each day can offer some serious health benefits, including enhanced physical performance during a workout. In addition, Gillett says, “Your brain is strongly influenced by your hydration status. Many studies have shown—with subjects ranging from children to older adults—that mild dehydration can impact mood, memory and brain performance.”
Drinking water can also aid in things like weight loss by boosting your metabolic rate or preventing/treating issues like frequent headaches, fatigue, poor concentration and dry skin.
DRINK UP
Measuring hydration may seem near impossible, but it’s actually quite easy. You’ll want to make sure that you are also not overindulging, which Gillett notes can lead to hyponatremia, a life-threatening condition where the sodium
content in your blood is diluted.
“To know if your fluid intake is adequate, look at the following: you rarely feel thirsty [and] your urine is colorless or light yellow,” she says. “It really is that simple.”
Gillett recommends indulging in filtered water that is either ionized or has some added electrolytes. Sea salt is another great additive that can help aid with hydration. “Because sparkling water is just water plus carbonation, … [it is] just as hydrating as plain, flat water,” she explains. “Keep an eye on the ingredient list though. Some brands add fruit juice or purée while others add sugar or artificial sweeteners.” And she adds that sports drinks are not all that helpful, unless you’re an endurance athlete who is sweating frequently.
As for hydration products, some brands, like Liquid I.V., can give you an added boost, though you should not rely on them in place of drinking an adequate amount of water.
HEALTHY HABITS
With the heat of summer beating strong, follow these tips to stay hydrated while having fun in the sun.
• DRINK WATER FIRST THING: When you wake up in the morning, down a glass of
water before anything else—especially coffee. “Do not drink coffee or anything caffeinated before water,” Gillett notes. “It will only make you more dehydrated and put you in a hole.”
• HYDRATE AROUND FITNESS: Before, during and after a workout—or even a sauna session—make sure you drink plenty of water.
• USE AN ACCOUNTABILITY SYSTEM: Labeled containers or smart bottles with accompanying cell phone apps can help you keep track of how much water you’ve had throughout the day. But the easiest way, according to Gillett, is to buy a regular bottle and find out how many ounces it is. “Then do the math to figure out how many of these bottles you would need to drink in a day to be [at] half your body weight in ounces,” she says.
• DON’T DRINK LATE AT NIGHT: The majority of your water intake should happen during the day. If you drink too late at night, it will affect your sleep quality. “You’ll be up every hour going to the restroom,” Gillett says. “The best move is to get a measurable water bottle and get most of your day’s worth of drinking done before dinner.”
Wine & Dine
NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB HAS A NUMBER OF UPCOMING WINE EVENTS TO ENJOY THIS SUMMER.
BY ASHLEY RYAN
As the weather heats up and locals seek out the best wine tasting events at which to sip and relax this season, look no further than your own club. The property’s upcoming events offer everything you need to sip, relax and enjoy this summer.
California cuisine and flavorful wines pair together perfectly, and no one knows that better than the culinary experts at Newport Beach Country Club. Read on to discover what they’ve planned for the next few months.
CHEF’S TABLE
JULY 7 AND 14
This culinary event is sure to be packed full of the flavors of the season, with fresh fare dedicated to summertime produce. And nothing is better during the summer than light, bright flavors. As you enjoy bites dreamt up by NBCC’s executive chef, Graeme Blair, and his team, find the perfect varietals to pair them with. With a Summer in a Bottle theme, these two culinary events will offer a glimpse at some more refreshing wines that are perfect for alfresco dining on sunny or shaded patios. Sip everything from sparkling bubbly and crisp rosé to Beaujolais, a French red wine known for its light body, high acidity and fruity notes.
J.H. WHEELER WINE DINNER
AUG. 18
This event will highlight Wheeler Farms from the Napa Valley region, focusing specifically on J.H. Wheeler Wines. Offering single-vineyard wines that pay tribute to the original owners and founders of the company, J.H. Wheeler Wines has an assemblage that ranges from rosé and sauvignon blanc to various cabernet sauvignons, with additional labels found in its library collection. The brand’s new owners, who took over in 2014, are dedicated to keeping the winery’s legacy alive while also incorporating sustainable farming techniques and uplifting its nearby wine community. Here at NBCC, enjoy an intimate evening as representatives from the farm itself visit to educate diners on more of the brand’s history and its varietals. In addition to tasting delicious J.H. Wheeler Wines, guests will enjoy steakhouse cuisine matched flawlessly with the labels for the perfect pairings.
BIG WINES, SMALL PLATES
SEPT. 24
Each year, NBCC presents Big Wines, Small Plates, planned and organized here at the club by our food and beverage staff. It has become one of our members’ favorite events of the year, offering a look at wineries from all over California. Those who attend will be treated to pours from more than 40 different vendors, served alongside equally delectable bites crafted by our culinary team. In addition to trying the many varietals that will be offered, guests will also be able to purchase bottles to enjoy in the comfort of their own homes or when entertaining guests. This year, we are going all out to make sure the wine tasting experience is everything you’ve dreamed of and more so don’t miss it.

“Not Bad For An Irish Broad”
ADRIENNE BRANDES, THE COP TURNED REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONAL, FEELS MOST AT HOME IN THE SADDLE.
BY ANN CHATILLON
As a young lady from Ireland, Adrienne Brandes joined the Los Angeles Police Department. It was a time when female officers on the streets of L.A. were rare, especially in the tough neighborhoods she patrolled. While on the force, Adrienne was instrumental is starting D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), a program implemented in schools to this day. Leaving the force, Brandes moved on to other business ventures,
AC: What’s your favorite movie?
AB: Gone with the Wind. I’m truly a romantic at heart.
AC: When are you most happy?
AB: When I’m on a trail ride with one of my horses, either in Coto de Caza, or on one of my leased horses in Ireland.
landing in the real estate field. For twenty years she has been a top-producing realtor and developer specializing in luxury living. She’s a hiker, a cowgirl, and a passionate home-cook. Adrienne and her husband, R.J., own The Fieldhouse restaurant at Silver Lakes Equestrian and Sports Park, the complex founded by R.J. They live in Corona del Mar and have a combined family of five children and four grandchildren.
AC:What’s something you’ll never do again?
AB: Go through the police academy.
AC:Any heroes?
AB: My mother and father. They came to this country chasing the American dream with three small children in the early ‘60s, not knowing a soul but wanting what was best for their family. My mother was my mentor, and even though she was not formally educated, she was an amazing real estate agent and investor. My father truly taught me the meaning of being an honorable person and always doing the right thing.
AC:Do you have any tattoos? If so, where?
AB: I have three—never mind where.
AC:Homebody or Jet-set?
AB: I’m very blessed to have a home in Aspen and one in Ireland along with our residence in Corona del Mar. So, I would say I’m a jet-setter who likes to go and be a homebody in different places. I love to travel but always love coming home.
AC:Are you a dog or a cat person?
AB: I’m a dog and horse person. We have a Scottish Terrier, Claire, and two horses. Horses are like potato chips; you can’t stop at one.
AC:What do you enjoy most about Newport Beach Country Club?
AB: It’s an absolutely gorgeous environment, elegant yet casual to entertain, and within walking distance from my office. And, of course, the members.
AC:What do you fear?
AB: The state of the world today. Drug Abuse. War.
AC: What’s your favorite season?
AB: Fall, without a doubt. R.J. and I were married in Aspen in the fall amongst the changing of the leaves. The foliage is truly breathtaking. We go back each year at the same time to renew our vows.
AC:What’s your motto or a saying that you really like?
AB: “Not bad for an Irish broad.”

Selby Gillett Director of Membership
A New Mom’s Perspective
WELCOME NEW BALBOA BAY CLUB FAMILIES
By Selby Gillett, Director of Membership
There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t find myself in awe over some aspect of the parenting journey. Some days I am amazed that I’m able to function at a reasonable level after a string of long nights soothing a teething baby. Some days I look up at the clock thinking only 5 minutes have passed only to realize I’ve spent the better half of an hour playing peek-a-boo because every “boo” elicits a giggle that makes my heart feel as if it will burst!
And some days, it’s just a realization that my perspective on something has changed, including life here at the Bay Club. Prior to parenthood, I used to speak to how great it is to have a safe space with familiar faces and a sense of community or how there are events for members of all ages. But now I know even as enthused as I was about the BBC offerings then, it was nothing compared to my opinion now as a new parent.
Now I see how valuable regular interactions with people other than a child’s parents can be and how that sense of community can help foster compassion and independence. I see that big memories can come from small moments on the sand or in front of the Dip ‘n’ Dots machine. And I can appreciate how nice it is to have a place to go on autopilot when mom or dad just aren’t feeling up to making dinner but still want that feeling of intimate family time. I even get the excitement of a night out to just be an adult and be with other adults.
It’s a special place we have here. As we continue to charge through the summer, I encourage you to take a moment to check your perspective and appreciate, really appreciate, what the Balboa Bay Club means to you and your family.
“It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.” – Henry David Thoreau

“America The Beautiful”
THE NATION’S FUTURE IS STRONG IN THE HANDS OF AMERICAN YOUTH
BY CAROLE PICKUP / PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS DARNALL
The following eight young people you will be reading about are diversified in many areas. I chose them for all the reasons they fit in with my title, because they are beautiful for all they have done and all they are doing and will be doing in college.
While reading all the information the students needed to prepare to receive a BBC scholarship, I just sighed. I’m glad I went to college in the late 50s. Today I don’t think I would’ve made it. Timing is everything right? Receiving top grades plus all the extra-curricular activities and community involvement, athletics, creative club involvement, etc., etc.; this all goes with their endeavors to achieve higher learning, and entrance into a college of their choice.
So please read on about the students I have chosen from the 24 scholars from all the different scholarship categories to give you a glimpse into their backgrounds, talents and accomplishments in all they do. They are moving on with great promise continuing to make America even more beautiful and amazing. Enjoy reading about them.
MEET MORGAN CAMPBELL
Morgan has been a student at Corona del Mar High School. Her high school counselor has known her all four years. She says, “Morgan has exceeded all expectations of being an extraordinary and outstanding scholar, athlete, school leader and human being. She has faced some very unfortunate family circumstances which could have impacted her overall motivation, but she pulled through with her ‘best self’ despite her family tragedy.”
Her goal is to work as an EMT during college and use her patient care hours towards the Physician’s Assistant Program. Morgan is a curious learner and a natural born leader as well as an inspiration to others. Her many awards, plus her work experience, is unbelievable. She will be attending UC Santa Barbara in the fall.
Morgan has used her hardships in life to propel her motivation to be an even better person and help others.
MEET JAIME HERRERA
Newport Harbor High School AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program turns out some exceptional students who have demonstrated the desire, the capacity and resolve to attend college. Jaime wants to major in film production. He has earned numerous awards. His skills are many. He is fluent in Spanish and has been a Spanish translation provider in school. He is an avid distance runner. He enjoys photography, video education and video graphics. Community work experience was clearly important for Jaime especially his work at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church café. He has been accepted to the following colleges: Loyola Marymount, Cal State Fullerton, and Vanguard University of Southern California. The scholarship Jaime is receiving will be very helpful to create a base for his future dreams of earning a BA in cinema and TV arts at his chosen college.
MEET LORELEI HOBBIS
Lorelei’s Costa Mesa High School counselors see her as a person with intellectual curiosity and a real passion for problem solving. Deep down she loves to learn. What is really impressive is that she knows how to install fuses in her car which she refers to as, “Love of my life” car Suzy, a Suzuki Farina. She is in love with life, period.
Volleyball is her game of choice. She has been team captain on her volleyball team. She is easy to spot at 6’3”. She is comfortable with her gift of height. Learning more and more is definitely in her future plans. Her skills, abilities and traits will be embraced by everyone she encounters in whatever college she chooses and beyond.
Her community experiences are many. All her outstanding work with excellent grades is quite unbelievable including being a “Special Needs Companion,” where she implemented workouts for physical development–one of many efforts in helping others.
Lorelei is solely responsible for financing her college life, so this scholarship will be very helpful. Her major will be mechanical engineering, and her college choices are; UC Irvine, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo or Cal Poly Pomona.
MEET MASON HUNT
Mason is Harvard bound with a major in biomedical engineering. By the looks of his grades at Newport Harbor High School, he is one outstanding academic student.
As an athlete he has been captain of his NHHS water polo program and also ranks at the outstanding player level.
Mason is planning on becoming a doctor and follow in his father’s footsteps. He wants to pursue a degree in medicine that finds a cure for cancer given his own father’s cancer battle.
It took two pages to read all the academic awards and honors Mason has received as well as the athletic awards and honors plus his work experience in the community. It is mind blowing.
I so enjoyed reading of the legacy of brotherhood and how he achieved it by leading his water polo team in their last game at NHHS giving maximum effort. All the best will come his way.
MEET FALLON ROWERDINK
Fallon came into Newport Harbor High School not knowing one person. Her school counselor noted she had moved from a school outside the area. It was a bit intimidating for her socially where many of the students had known each other since preschool or kindergarten. But Fallon stepped out of her comfort zone and got herself involved in athletics and clubs and she found others who had similar interests. She participated in class and ended up with a great group of friends.
Fallon’s grades are exceptional, and she displays an interest in aerospace engineering. She decided to be a part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma program. It has been a great fit for her. It allows students to be independent thinkers.
Fallon has received the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma. Princeton has been her college of choice and she is looking forward to fall to start her journey of wonder.
MEET ALEX SUNDAY
Alex is graduating from Corona del Mar High School. He has a strong work ethic. Since early childhood, Alex’s parents have encouraged him to learn their Nigerian cultural traditions and practices in hopes of understanding and appreciating their native country when he grew older. Alex’s Nigerian background has given him a unique humanitarian mindset. Alex aims to fuel the spirit and needs of others before himself.
As far as his future is concerned, he will be attending Harvard. His area of future study shall be orthopedic medicine, plus so many other areas of interest.
The admissions committee believes Alex is a particularly good match for Harvard. They admire all he has accomplished and feel he will make the best use of opportunities provided at Harvard. Keep on moving forward, Alex.
MEET JEWEL REBRIGHT
Jewel has positively impacted both the students and staff at Costa Mesa High School. It is without a doubt she will do the same as she embarks on her journey toward higher education.
At age 12, Jewel was introduced to journalism where she flourished and has been the editor and chief of the journalism program over the last four years. She is a trusted team player who teachers can count on to get the job done. The Wellness Center on campus has been led in many ways by Jewel. She developed her plan to use journalism and publicity skills to inform students about the benefits and resources of the Wellness Center on campus. She also created a Wellness Advocacy Instagram page that can be used as an outreach tool.
Jewel is looking forward to attending the American University in Washington D.C. She plans to be financially on her own and the BBC Scholarship will help.
MEET TYLER HUMPHRIES
Tyler has a love for learning and a hunger for being challenged which has motivated him to take rigorous courses besides what was expected of him. He has handled the pressures with much success, placing him in the top 2% of his graduation class. He has done so much and made it look easy and enjoyable. He is a rare case because he truly enjoys the path he has taken at Estancia High School and he feels it has been a good fit for him.
Besides academics, Tyler is a leader on and off campus. He has been involved in student government (ASB) since his sophomore year as class representative in 10th and 11th grades and ASB Vice President his senior year.
He has dealt with a medical condition since he was in 5th grade. It has helped him realize how interesting medicine and biology are to him. He is very resilient and stays positive as he moves forward. He is amazing, says his counselor. As an athlete he has been a star in baseball and water polo. UCLA will be his college of choice in the fall with biology as his major.
Special thanks to Aaron, Melanie, and Chris for their assistance with this article.

DANCING WITH PENGUINS
AURORA EXPEDITIONS – EXPLORE ENDLESSLY
BY MELISSA LAITMAN
Sir Douglas Mawson was a key expedition leader – up there with Roald Amundsen and Ernest Shackleton – during a period dramatically named the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. In 1910 Mawson purchased the Aurora, a barquerigged steam yacht that traversed back and forth from Australia to Antarctica between 1911-1914, before it disappeared in 1916.
A new home has been brought to life in the namesake of Mawson’s beloved ship… Aurora Expeditions was founded 31 years ago in 1991 by Australians Greg Mortimer and his wife Margaret. Greg is a passionate advocate of exploration travel. His objective was simple, to take small groups with him and explore regions of the world that would touch their souls. And so, he did…
Aurora Expeditions was born in Australia;
however, it has since ventured to new markets around the globe including the U.K., South America and most recently, North America. Lisa Bertini, VP of sales in North America, states, “Truly what makes the expedition special is not the ship, but the destination itself; the Greg Mortimer and Sylvia Earle are built for expedition travel, but what makes Aurora special is getting our passengers off the ship and into the destinations we visit.” And Aurora has some truly spectacular and unique destinations. From Antarctica where penguins, seals and whales show off their beauty in abundance, to The Arctic where its majestic Polar Bears roam, as well as Greenland, Iceland, Scotland and Ireland, Patagonia and Costa Rica, each with a distinct flavor unto itself.
If you are planning on going on an
expedition cruise ship, Bertini encourages, “Do your homework and ensure you choose the right operator. The expedition sector is expanding with many choices. I would strongly recommend engaging with a trusted travel advisor, whether it is one of our own trained specialists or your own personal agent to help navigate the right experience for you.”
With so many choices of expedition companies out there, it is important to choose wisely. The first consideration is the expedition features of the ship. The other is the knowledge and expertise of the expedition team. “Since you can’t control Mother Nature, choose a team that can expect the unexpected to provide the best experience possible,” states Bertini. “You need to live in the moment and put your phones down.”
Adventure can also be conducive to romance. Bertini goes on to say, “This past season, earlier in the year, we facilitated a wedding ceremony on the ice and on another voyage, a couple got engaged.” Aurora’s intimate environment and wide range of activities, such as camping on the ice under the stars with penguins close by and beautiful glaciers sparkling in the distance, is truly a perfect combination to make your trip individualized.
Aurora operates the newest expedition ships in the market: Greg Mortimer, named after its founder and bult in 2019 and Sylvia Earle, coming out in the fall of 2022, both average 132 passengers and feature revolutionary Ulstein X-Bow technology. Dr. Sylvia Earle, a highly accomplished marine biologist, oceanographer, and explorer, was the first female chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and this ship is a well-deserved honor in her name. “Our ships were built with exploration in mind. The X-Bow provides a smoother ride through rough waters such as the Drake Passage. Some describe it as a hot knife through butter,” says Bertini. The fleet of inflatable Zodiacs, hydraulic viewing platforms, mudrooms and inflatable activity platforms are all designed to get expeditioners off the ship and into the destination they are so looking forward to going to, as quickly as possible.
Aurora also offers a wide range of activities including polar sea kayaking, scuba diving, snorkeling, rock climbing, alpine trekking, snowshoeing, skiing, just to name a few. There is also Shackleton’s Crossing, an Aurora exclusive, where expeditions follow the footsteps of Sir Ernest Shackleton and trek for up to three days across South Georgia from King Haakon Bay to Stromness, either on foot or on skis.
But don’t worry if you choose not to participate in the optional activities, you will get a recap every night hearing the experiences of everyone else. Other lectures take place during the voyage to learn more about the destination from renowned geologists, historians, ornithologists and even photographers to teach you how to take incredible photos using your smartphone.
For over 30 years, Aurora has been exploring endlessly. We have pioneered travel and are passionate about taking guests on perspective-altering voyages to some of the most remote and
off-the-beaten-path destinations. Lisa Bertini echoes that sentiment, “We have discovery in our DNA and aim to deepen your connection to remote places. We are committed to the education and the protection of the places we visit. Our goal is to bring out the curiosity in you while also creating future ambassadors of our fragile planet.” Aurora has a passionate and knowledgeable
team of experts ready to answer your questions and provide you with further information. Whether you are a solo traveler (yes, they have single rates and share-withs), a couple or a group, Aurora puts your needs first! Call today 833.826.5828 and mention this article for a $250 onboard credit. They would be happy to help you plan your trip of a lifetime!
BREAK OUT THE GRILL FOR THE 4TH
RECIPES FOR THE BBQ FROM AROUND THE USA
BY LANA SILLS
Smoked Brisket, Tender Pulled Pork, FallOff-The-Bone Ribs, all classics...America is going through a smoked meats renaissance these days. Let’s face it: most smoked meat is pretty tasty. Let’s dig in! The barbecue elements—wood, meat, cut, rub, sauce—all add up to entirely different traditions. Barbecue is uniquely American, and each part of the country has its own barbecue style…America’s love affair with barbecue has never burned hotter than right now.
Some consider Arthur Bryant’s BBQ in Kansas City, Missouri to be the most famous barbecue restaurant in the United States (get the Burnt Ends) and some say that Joe’s Kansas City is the holy grail of the Carolina pulled pork sandwich and pork ribs with heavy smoke and sweet, sticky sauces. In Taylor, Texas, Louie Mueller Barbecue is oozing with character and brisket and sausages sliced right in front of you, established in 1949. Central Texas is perhaps most famous for brisket smoked over oak and served without sauce. The Carolinas are all about pig and when you’re in Memphis you might want to try the barbecued bologna. And Alabama is really famous for its white barbecue sauce. What makes it white, you ask? Mayonnaise combined with vinegar, lemon juice, spices, black pepper and horseradish…it is the Alabama barbecue
emblem for pork shoulder and whole chickens and it’s scrumptious.
Steven Raichlen, a national BBQ treasure and author of The Barbecue Bible is one of my heroes. And on the Fourth, I’m going to make like Steven Raichlen and grill the perfect steak and make his recipe for a Reverse Seared Tri-Tip. The meat slowly roasted over indirect heat for 30 minutes or so, rested for up to an hour and then seared over high direct heat until it’s sizzling, crusty and perfectly medium-rare. It allows thick cuts of meat to cook to an even doneness and develop a charred crust. Once you reverse sear, you’ll never go back.
The possibilities are endless when it comes to what you can cook in your smoker…BBQ classics, delicious sides and even some smoky cocktails. Smoked Salt…basically salt+smoke+time=smoked salt (I recommend using Maldon Sea Salt Flakes), Smoked Pulled Pork, Texas Style Smoked Beef Short Ribs, Pork Ribs, BBQ Brisket, Brisket Burnt Ends, Spatchcock Chicken, Smoked Buffalo Wings, Brined and Rubbed succulent Chicken Breasts on the bone, Smoked Turkey Breast, Smoked Duck Breasts, Pork Tenderloin wrapped in salty Prosciutto and what can be better than Fried Chicken?...Smoked & Fried Buttermilk Chicken Thighs of course! Smoked and Fried Chicken…use chicken
thighs which are perfectly suited to smoking and then frying as they are slightly fattier than breasts, so they won’t dry out easily. I do a double dunk and dredge to ensure the crispiest results. Serve them simply with a drizzle of honey or throw them into burger buns with some Southern Style Coleslaw (request my recipe at Lanacooks@icloud.com).
Perfect for sandwiches, pulled pork is probably the legendary recipe made right after you purchased your Smoker. I love making pulled chicken and turkey in my Traeger, using a bone-in turkey breast gives great results. Place your pulled chicken or turkey on a potato slider bun and top with your favorite BBQ sauce and creamy Fennel and Apple Slaw.
Grill, Reverse-Sear and Smoke with some of my favorites—from Wagyu beef and Kurobuta pork to sustainable striped bass and wild game. For the kids at heart, remember that not all hot dogs are created equal. Wagyu hot dogs are crafted from 100% American Wagyu beef and combined with a blend of spices, then slowly smoked with hardwood; they’re snappy and scrumptious. Wild game sausages and duck breasts make any BBQ interesting and tasty.
Start simple with a small board of grilled or smoked cheese, grilled grapes and grilled baguette slices. Add a two-ingredient appetizer that makes everyone happy…Grilled Kielbasa+whole grain mustard.
Kids love Strawberries…especially Grilled Strawberry Kebabs. Mix it up with brownie bites, pound cake cubes and banana slices, all drizzled with chocolate. Watermelon wedges on a stick and patriotic fruit skewers for the Fourth of July with blueberries and watermelon stars will be your summertime go-to recipe!
Make Backyard BBQ desserts fun with frozen gelato topped with a caramel sauce drizzle and surrounded by a puff of cotton candy. Or make a bright, boozy, tangy, refreshing, decadent Frozen Margarita Pie or a warm Berry Crumble with Blackberry Ice Cream.
May your July grilling feasts be warm, sunny celebrations. Cheers to a summer of good times and fabulous food!
BOURBON-CHILI BARBECUE SAUCE
BOURBON-CHILI BARBECUE SAUCE
Smoky bourbon melds with spicy Thai chilies and sweet peach preserves for the ultimate BBQ sauce. Make it in advance so the flavors can blend and keep a jar in your fridge all summer long.
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 small yellow onion, minced
1 red Thai chili—stemmed, seeded and minced
2/3-cup ketchup
1/4-cup dark brown sugar
1/4-cup bourbon
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons peach preserves 1 tablespoon honey salt and pepper, to taste
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the garlic, onion and chili and cook about 8 minutes until lightly golden brown. Add the remaining ingredients and cook, stirring often, until thickened, about 15 minutes. Cool completely and use as a marinade or baste.
PANZANELLA WITH TOMATOES & GRILLED CORN
Grilled corn adds a note of sweetness to this tangy grilled bread salad.
1 cup thinly sliced red onion
3 tablespoons red wine, champagne or sherry wine vinegar
2 tablespoons lemon juice
3 ears corn, husks removed
8 ounces sourdough bread, cut into 1-inch thick slices
8 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, divided
1 pound tomatoes, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 cup torn fresh basil leaves
2 garlic cloves, minced
Smoked salt and fresh pepper, to taste
Optional: diced cucumber, yellow pepper, red pepper, capers, grilled veggies
Combine the red onion, vinegar and lemon juice in a large bowl. Set aside, stirring occasionally. Meanwhile, grill corn until slightly charred and tender, 8 to 10 minutes. Let cool slightly, then cut the kernels from the cobs and add to the bowl with the onion.
Brush both sides of the bread with 2 tablespoons oil. Grill the bread on both sides until well toasted. Tear or cut the toasted bread into 1-inch cubes and add to the bowl. Add the remaining 6 tablespoons oil, tomatoes, basil, garlic, salt and pepper and stir to combine. Serve Immediately. Serves 6.
GRILLED PINEAPPLE WITH BUTTER-RUM SAUCE
For this addictive dessert, make the sauce ahead and put the pan right on the grill as you cook the pineapple. The only reason you’ll have to go into the kitchen is to get another bottle of Tequila!
1 stick unsalted butter
1 cup lightly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup Meyers or other dark Rum
a pinch each of nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice
Oil or spray oil for the grill
8 slices very ripe pineapple, 1-inch thick, cored
In a small saucepan, cook the butter, brown sugar, rum and spices. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until the sauce is slightly syrupy and coats the back of a spoon.
Heat the grill, making sure it is clean, and brush or spray with a touch of oil so the pineapple doesn’t stick. Grill the pineapple slices until warmed through and caramelized, about
10 minutes each side.
Serve immediately with the warm sauce, ice cream scoops, whipped cream and chopped pistachios. Serves 8.
SMOKED IDEAS AND A COCKTAIL
Inspire your guests and serve delicious cocktails with a smoky twist or drinks that have grilled elements to them!
I use the Breville Smoking Gun, which quickly adds natural cold smoke flavor and aroma. Perfect for the home chef and mixologist to create distinctive cocktails with an essence of smoke, without using heat.
An easy to use, high-tech smoking gun enhances the flavor of liquids (tomato juice for your Bloody Mary recipe) and brings a subtle smokiness to cheeses, delicate fish, and I even use it to infuse my ice cream bases.
Smoked Salt is incredibly easy to make using Maldon Sea Salt Flakes. Simply scatter your salt flakes onto a cookie sheet or large foil pan. Throw it on your smoker whenever you’re doing a cook and leave it there for 2 to 3 hours.
Let’s start the party with a SMOKED ESPRESSO MARTINI. Adding smokiness to it gives it a complexity I find missing.
1 ounce vodka
1 ounce coffee liqueur – I use Kahlua
1 standard shot of espresso
Ice Martini glass
Cocktail Shaker
Smoking Gun
Fill a cocktail shaker half-full of ice, then pour in the vodka, coffee liqueur and espresso. Use your smoking gun to fill the shaker with smoke. After adding your smoke, put on the lid and shake vigorously for 30 seconds. Strain into a martini glass.
The Future Of Home Health Care
HOAG AT HOME FILLS A VOID
BY MICHAEL BRANT-ZAWADSKI MD
Remember Marcus Welby MD? Those of you that do are likely, like me, to be of a “certain age.” Having a primary care doc who knows all and actually makes house calls reminds us of a halcyon time gone by. But guess what: House calls are making a comeback. As a relatively new Bay Club resident, I am pleasantly surprised at the convenience of apartment life where many services are readily available on-site: Dining, home maintenance, pool, gym, racquetball and basketball courts, a full-service spa with sauna steam room and jacuzzi (I have yet to figure out if I qualify for a blow dry). Best yet, a chute to drop your garbage down! Why not in-home healthcare? For those who wish for a Dr. Welby, good news: modern hospitals are increasingly realizing the value of home visits integrated into the continuum of health care, because addressing smoldering issues at home prevents the acute fire drill of a hospital admission. Inpatient hospital care is the most expensive form of healthcare, and hospitals are punished for readmissions that occur within 30 days of discharge. Recent trials show that patients, for the most part, much prefer being treated at home for conditions that previously necessitated admission, if equally well-monitored and
managed at home with interactive technology-assisted daily home visits by their clinicians.
The graying of America is inexorable and is driving the shift to home care. Today, seniors’ healthcare costs three times as much as those under 65. This is no surprise, given the higher frequency of chronic and acute elements that befall them: 88% of boomers have a chronic health condition such as diabetes or hypertension, 25% of them have four or more. The financial impact of these is massive. Medicare enrollment is projected a 50% increase by 2030, with 80 million participants, the percentage of Americans over 65 doubling from 2010-2030. Clearly, innovative ways to keep those covered by Medicare from needing hospitalization are needed. A national initiative conceived by the Institute for Health Care Improvement targets this population for improving the quality and experience of health care, with clinically appropriate home health delivery being a key tactic.
No wonder that businesses providing a variety of home health services are growing. There are now over 12,200 home health agencies in the US, four out of five with forprofit ownership, employing over 800,000 home aides, and caring for more than 4.5 million people. This reminds me of another old TV show that Johnny Carson fans may remember as it was his first: Who Do You Trust?
Due diligence is always wise when choosing any service, especially true when it comes to your health. We are fortunate to have a world-class hospital, Hoag, nearby. And now, that nearby not-for-profit hospital offers an excellent home health subsidiary: Hoag at Home. And, yes, house calls are a key component provided by its dedicated physicians, integrated to one’s primary care MDs, and Hoag’s top-notch specialists. A broad variety of services are provided at home – such as physical therapy, infusion services, nursing and psychological support, if needed. Even basic imaging such as ultrasound studies can be performed in the home. For those who are challenged by chronic conditions and/or mobility, this is a game changer. For those at the late stages of life, even palliative care and hospice can be provided in the home.
It takes a team: Marcus Welby could not do all this.

Inflation…Fact and Fiction
RISING INTEREST RATES CREATE CORPORATE VULNERABILITY
BY IVAN ILLÁN
On August 24, 2020, my article entitled “Is Inflation Finally On The Horizon?” was published on Forbes.com. At the time, the annual U.S. Inflation Rate (as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, CPI) was 1.31%. What has played out since is common knowledge. Inflation has become more virulent and obnoxious than most had imagined. My article’s primary thesis was that inflation is universally a money market dynamic issue with money supply and goods/services demand as functions. Using this same framework, we may forecast that inflation will naturally find a lower course in the several months to come. However, this may be economically perilous depending on several factors.
In that August 2020 article, I described the money market dynamic. In essence, money supply versus money demand (where GDP is a good proxy) always settles into an equilibrium point. When money supply is high (as it has been these past couple years) while goods/services demand remains relatively stable, the net effect is “more money chasing” the same amount of goods and services produced which causes higher prices, e.g., higher inflation. We’ve seen this scenario play out in a nearly perfect storm of expanding money supply with an added burden of constrained goods/services production due to supply-chain issues. This had exacerbated inflation even more than the money supply dynamic alone.
As supply-chain issues resolve and money supply reduces (through Federal Reserve FOMC activities), the inverse effect of falling prices should become visible. However, unlike the expansionary money phase, the contractionary phase is no fun. Although the result would have inflation wane, this would be primarily driven by reduced consumption demand. Production declines too as accumulated inventories would be sufficient to meet ongoing demand. There should be an expected point of marketplace resistance to higher prices, although that point seems not achieved at this moment. Retail sales figures remain elevated for the time-being, but basic economic theory holds that it would come to fall eventually.
With a pullback in demand, businesses would be challenged to keep bottom-line profits stable. Their most typical recourse is reducing payrolls to maintain profit margins, as topline revenues edge lower. Even in taking this cost-cutting action, businesses that have gorged on low-cost debt issuance would find it difficult to maintain profit margins as their debt refinancing costs have soared higher in recent months. Considering the vast majority of corporate-issued debt is rated BBB, the pressure to cut costs to maintain their investment-grade credit ratings would mount. The unemployment rate would increase marginally so long as the Federal Reserve’s actions are moderated and synced with business slowdown. This would be the ideal scenario resulting in what is commonly being referred to as a “soft landing” for an economy that’s been flying high on cheap money for more than a decade.
For stock investors, companies without profits may be most vulnerable during this period of adjustment. Many of these companies (particularly cash-strapped ones) may not survive. Companies with profits may be less so impacted but could still trade lower in sympathy with the overall economic malaise. Bondholders may continue to be reminded that debt instruments are subject to price declines too, particularly if they hold bond funds with high percentages of BBB debt. On the positive, money market rates and bank deposits could start to offer yields not seen since 2006, which is an important step toward capital structure normalization. Of course, none of this is written in stone, and the future is uncertain. However, we could refer to economic tenets as a guide toward how things may unfold.
Connecting With The Declaration Of Independence
4TH OF JULY REFLECTIONS
BY ALEX CHAZEN
This month, we celebrate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, and therefore the founding of our nation. Here at the Bay Club, and throughout Southern California, we will celebrate at the beach, watching fireworks, and more likely than not, enjoying some grilled and chilled refreshments. In the years immediately following the revolution, our founding fathers celebrated similarly, with parades, bonfires, and the firing of canons. However, our founding fathers did one thing that many of us leave out of our Independence Day celebrations: public readings of the Declaration of Independence.
One could ask why reading a document that many at that time had memorized, and which would be essentially succeeded by the Articles of Confederation (1 year later) and then the Constitution (12 more years later) would be the centerpiece to the celebration of our freedoms.
I asked something similar in synagogue as a young boy. I was reciting a prayer that I had memorized at least twice
over, and the Rabbi asked where I was in the prayerbook. When I explained that I had memorized the prayer, he told me to open the book. He explained that no matter how many times we read something, we find something new – notice something different in the detail. Often, the texts that we use most often are the ones that we could use a rereading of the most. I have found this true in my law practice, and also in my reading of bedtime stories to my kids. Each time something is read (and believe me, I can recite quite a few Little Golden Books that my son loves by heart), an emphasis on a different section, a change of mood, can completely shift the meaning and the takeaway of the document.
Our system of laws is one that is constantly evolving –looking at precedent from the past, sure, but applying those facts to new circumstances. The most recent Amendment to the Constitution, the Supreme Law of the Land, that did not deal with Congressional pay, was ratified in 1971. Since then, computers went from machines that took up entire rooms on college campuses, to small enough to fit in our pockets.
In that same time, fifty different states globally gained sovereignty. And yet, the document that forms our system of government remains steadfastly the same, open to interpretation as time and technology shifts.
As one could probably guess from my annual tomes about the beauty of our American system of law and government, I am also a very big fan of the West Wing.
In Season 6 of the show, a legal professor is working to develop a new democratic constitution for an Eastern European country. After a back and forth about the inherent benefits of parliamentarian versus presidential democracies, the professor (played by the excellent Christopher Lloyd), explains, “The document is just the beginning. A constitutional democracy succeeds only if the constitution reflects democratic values already alive in the citizenry.”
Celebrating our independence is a fun and joyous occasion. It is one we look forward to every year. But more important than the excitement we feel for that first firework after sundown on the fourth, is the year-round work to ensure that we all continue to hold those democratic values alive in our hearts.
Happy Independence Day, this July 4th, and every other day of the year.
Swim At Your Own Risk
BEACH LIFEGUARD SHORTAGE
BY RYAN G. COOK
2022 has been an interesting year given major societal changes. People are having difficulty returning to a somewhat normal everyday routine. Everything is different post COVID. People have become used to lifestyle benefits and are having trouble adjusting to pre-COVID living. This societal shift has created problems for businesses regarding staffing and workforce. Schools are dealing with issues around attendance. The culture shift is extremely evident regarding a lack of respect for one another and a very divided society which leads to more violence, crime, drugs, alcoholism, and other negative outcomes.
The lack of respect for public safety thrust upon our police and fire is shocking. Teachers are retiring early. We are living in a world where you can work in fast food or drive an uber and make more money than getting a degree and having a career.
Let’s take a look and compare the quick serve industry (QSR) spike in staffing to the decline in local public safety, specifically focusing on the lifeguard shortages up and down our coast.
Looking into hourly pay rates for lifeguards, it was hard to find any information. Let’s just say none of the departments I spoke with were proud of the pay scale. Further, none were openly marketing pay via social media or web. That should be a first sign, right? On the other hand, successful organizations that are proud of recruiting have a completely different public relations strategy including the current fast food industry standard. Just drive by any local chain like McDonald’s and you will see a “McHiring” sign offering starting pay at $20 per hour.
Carl’s Jr: $18.80/hour
Comparing hourly pay is just one piece of the problem. However, when you compare benefits, there is no comparison. Starting season lifeguards do not have benefits, though one could argue working at the beach in a bathing suit is a benefit. Then again, the counter argument to that would be skin cancer and no health benefits.
Organizations like Starbucks give employees full health benefits and educational incentives. Organizations like Chick-Fil-A send you to formal training and school, while lifeguard departments are currently suggesting interviewees to be Emergency Medical Technicians. However, applicants pay for the course and license on their own. Taco Bell incentivizes employees with food and has a multiple break policy for bathroom or any other personal need, including family phone calls. Most lifeguards have to use the restroom in the tower or if they are lucky enough to be on a rescue, in the water. A bad day at Dairy Queen consists of a rude customer or coworker making your day miserable. But a bad day at the beach could consist of a multiple victim rescue, CPR or losing someone.
There exists a large problem at the moment with lifeguard recruitment. Hopefully, city councils dive deeper and expedite changes, otherwise we will start seeing more and more drownings and deaths occur at our beaches. To make a strong point, just research lifeguard tryouts up and down the coast and compare normal numbers to current tryout attendance this year. It’s a scary difference.
