THE GOLDEN GLOW of JULY 4TH CELEBRATION

AT NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB

CONVERSATIONS WITH FINANCIAL ADVISOR, GINO STUMPO: College Savings

College costs are soaring, how prepared are you? It might be time to consider the benefits of utilizing a college savings plan, such as a 529 account, for your child’s college fund. As always, making financial decisions requires a crucial understanding of the options available to you and a firm grasp of the objective at hand. Luckily, we’re able to talk with Gino Stumpo CFP®, CRPC®, a Wealth Advisor and Managing Director at Stumpo Wealth Management Group at UBS. With nearly 25 years of assisting high-net worth individuals with investment management and comprehensive financial planning, Gino possesses the knowledge and experience necessary to provide guidance. As a father of three, Gino understands the motivation of a parent wanting to see their children succeed, recognizing the importance of investing in future college needs firsthand.

To begin with, a 529 account is a unique investment account which offers tax-advantaged withdrawals and other benefits when used to pay for qualified education expenses. With the cost of college increasing at an astonishing rate, it’s vital for parents to utilize the resources available to prepare for future higher education costs. “I believe college savings plans, such as 529 accounts, are grossly underutilized,”

says Gino. “529 accounts can be powerful and offer substantial tax savings. Investment gains are exempt from Federal taxes, and in some states, may also be exempt from state tax.”

As with investments, Gino is a big believer in periodic contributions, something which can be applied to 529 accounts as well. The amount can vary from person to person, so Gino recommends working backwards. For example, if you estimate your child’s college will cost $500,000 over four years, you can calculate how much you need to invest monthly based on your child’s current age. With the help of a financial advisor, you can estimate your monthly contributions to help reach your goals.

You may be concerned that owning a 529 account may affect scholarships. However, your 529 account can be used in conjunction with them. You’re allowed to withdraw up to the amount of the scholarship without incurring the usual 10% penalty on earnings.

As a reminder, having a conversation with a financial advisor, such as Gino Stumpo, can help with taking the first step to securing your child’s college fund. For a thorough assessment of your financial landscape, contact Gino

for a consultation. Your financial goals deserve a synchronized approach, and Stumpo Wealth Management is there to help make it happen.

Dear Friends

It’s summer in Newport. Does it get any better than that? No amount of hyperbole can match the experience of toes in the sand, clear blue heavens, and the intense waft of sea-air filling your brain on any July day when you might be able to shut the world out completely. Elizabeth Frlekin, 2, shows us all how to do just that as she peruses the Bay Window in search of some summer fun.

Pickleball has become the national rage. There is even an American league formed. Competitive and, some would say, crazed players at both NBCC and BBC just can’t get enough time on the courts. Summer is the ideal time. Slam away (don’t purposely aim at your competition, please) and take out all that pent up aggression caused by all the world noise we must leave out of our summer plans. Carrie Young is a champion pickleball slammer along

with her super slammer partner Mike Granja, taking home the 1st annual BBC Pickleball Championship Trophy.

Lazy and luxurious summer dining awaits at NBCC’s Seahorse Grill, the resort’s A+O and BBC’s Members Grill. NBCC’s Chef Graeme Blair and BBC’s Chef Prabeen Prathapan and their amazing culinary teams have elevated the summer dining experience to a new level of excellence. At A+O recently, the Club’s super creative Melissa Olson lunched with dining columnist Lana Sills sampling a new menu. The dining room was full, and the staff were racing between tables serving lobster rolls in such demand that a tray did not pass by without several delectable taste temptations destined for awaiting diners.

Sills describes all the details in her article on page 24 in the July issue. Get ready to make reservations.

Summer at your clubs is also the time to reunite with family and friends for every occasion. Reunions are special. Anne Wortmann, wife of BBC Governor John Wortmann invited an entire group of her former Rams Cheerleaders for a little time to share memories at the BBC. Take a look at “then and now.”

They all still look great, but can they move like they did? Don’t answer that.

The best part of our July issue is sharing the annual club scholarship news. Check out the story on pages 18-20 from Carole Pickup and I with the proud details surrounding 24 students from the Newport Mesa schools who took home over $150,000 in grants for their advanced educational goals and dreams. We can all be very proud. This is the essence of community spirit. A true shining star event to kick off summer 2024.

By now you know I cannot help myself offering some piece of life-affirming commentary in each month’s opening letter of Bay Window. I apologize for this obsession. It’s a sort of calling. My ancestor was a famous American preacher. It must be in the DNA. Anyway, here it is. I heard this recently in an interview with a billionaire you will not be familiar with, so no name necessary. When asked what is the greatest form of wealth, the answer came without hesitation.

“The most important currency in the world is kindness.”

Take that message and apply it with your sunscreen this summer.

Summer best!

The Best of the Best

The 1221 College Scholarship awarded to 24 students from the Newport-Mesa School District. More than $1.8 million granted to date over the past 2 ½ decades. The largest local philanthropic college scholarships granting fund in Newport Beach.

The grand ballroom at Balboa Bay Resort, Newport Beach, filled with families on a recent Tuesday evening. Cell phones flashed photos in succession as triple generations of loved ones gathered in familial groups in the prefunction foyer. Hugs were in major supply; a wonderful nervous kind of electric energy permeated the massive room. Grandparents, parents, teachers, counselors, friends and well-wishers had arrived to celebrate the presentation of the 2024 1221 Balboa Bay Club Scholarships to a formidable group of students from all of the Newport-Mesa High Schools destined for higher academic goals.

$150,000 in grants would be awarded on this night to 24 young people following their dreams. Over some 25 years, more than $1.8 million has been awarded, making the 1221 Balboa Bay Scholarships the largest private/ public scholarship fund in the Newport Mesa community.

John Wortmann, chairman of the board of Governors of Balboa Bay Club served as master of ceremonies and producer, working with club staff Aaron Trent, Melanie Hertrick, Leticia Rice, General Manager and Cindy Racco, Managing Director welcoming several hundred guests for dinner and the awards ceremony. California State Assembly member (72nd

District) Diane Dixon addressed the crowd with a dose of perfect graduation optimism as Wortmann read a proclamation from the Newport City Council praising the occasion and creating the official Balboa Bay Club Scholarship Day in Newport Beach. Mayor ProTem Joe Stapleton was front and center joining special guests and major donors and judges from the scholarship committee including Devon Martin, Carole Pickup, Michelle Barto, Heather Dickerson, Char Armstrong, Noel and Kathy Hamilton, Bill Blaine, Mark Larson, Jane and Art Riviera, Catherine Thyen and Mary Roosevelt to name only a few.

Prior to the presentation of the 2024

awards and the introduction of each recipient, Wortmann welcomed Fallon Rowerdink to the stage. Ms. Rowerdink completed her freshman year at Princeton University and joined her parents Tracy and Jeff Rowerdink returning to the awards banquet where she was honored in 2023 with a grant. With grace and substance, the young woman studying engineering at Princeton delivered a room-captivating short address of appreciation. The perfect tone was set for the procession of deserving awards to follow.

The scholarship awards are divided into several categories. Wortmann emphasized that every student was equally deserving. “These grants are not awards,” he offered continuing, “They are recognition of excellence earned and deserved. We are the fortunate ones to be able to give the recognition.”

The first segment of scholars accepting the “1221 Club Scholarships” included Marco Scott, Estancia High School, Dillion Nguyen, Rachel Laurence, Kaley Ouyang, German Leon and

Adelaide Juelfs from Costa Mesa High School, Alexandra Grant, Christian Brooks, Carson Simonson, Kaydence Osgood, Niels Hoffman and Piper Blackband from Corona del Mar High School and Angel Gutierrez and Aolani Gonzalez-Lopez from Newport Harbor High School.

Following the presentation of the students, Wortmann announced that an anonymous donor in the dinner crowd more than doubled the award for each of the “1221” winners. Applause rang out as the students on the stage were shocked.

The second segment of awards, called the “Governor’s Scholarship” were presented to Tara Spas, Kaylie Tran, Alejandro Garcia de la Cadena, all from Estancia High School, and Logan Hardy from Newport Harbor High School.

The third “Balboa Bay Club Scholarships” were bestowed upon Jack Trieu, Costa Mesa High School, Mateo Evans and Sophia Person

from Estancia High School, and Kate Stake from Newport Harbor High School.

Finally, “The Pinnacle Scholarships” awarded for students achieving the highest honors in both academics and athletics were awarded to Sophia del Villar and Gavin Appeldorn from Newport Harbor High School.

Each of the 24 awardees shared a moment at the microphone expressing appreciation for parents, teachers, counselors and mentors. Impressive goals were announced with great enthusiasm and expectations. The crowd enjoyed a lavish dinner buffet created by Balboa Bay Resort Chef Prabeen Prathapan as toasts of hope and promise raised glasses throughout the ballroom. The annual scholarship event is a year-long production by the women of Balboa Bay Club’s 1221 Club (address of club on Coast Highway) raising funds to make the grants possible.

Another milestone night to remember for Newport Mesa families.

College Calling

FOURTEEN REMARKABLE HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS STEP FORWARD ACCEPTING HONORS AND GRANTS AIDING THE FORMIDABLE FINANCIAL EXPENSE OF HIGHER EDUCATION

College is an institute of higher learning that provides a general education in the liberal arts and sciences, and grants a bachelor’s degree, plus, if desired, a master’s degree and more.

Chosen scholarship awardees are selected through the accumulated interviews performed by a group of qualified judges, granting a gift of money and other aid, enabling students to pursue their higher education goals.

When I was in college, many years ago, things were a bit different. Expense-wise, let’s take books: In 1957, most required books cost around $20, which we all thought was

extremely expensive. Today, the cost of all books and supplies requires major investment dollars! A $20 book is now laughable, young people today would say. The average book for learning in most classes runs around $100! That is why scholarships are so very important, enabling many young people to get by.

Please see the group photo of 14 of our 2024 recipients receiving the “1221” scholarships based on merit and financial need, making higher education possible for all of them.

Some of these young people came from homes with both parents, some did not. It makes a difference. Those from single parent homes helped their moms or dads financially, with the students doing odd jobs in restaurants

washing dishes after school and then studying after their jobs. Some youngsters started babysitting neighborhood children to help with family expenses. Others worked as valets at restaurants after school. Think about also participating in extracurricular activities, which are important when a scholarship is needed; these students did it all.

The dedication and hard work paid off. Now, many of these young people will be moving onward and upward to fine colleges and universities including UCI, Gonzaga, U of A, USC, UCLA, and Stanford.

CONGRATUATIONS! What a group you are!

Conquer the world. Live your dream!

5-Star Raves Over New Menu at A+O

BBR-BBC EXECUTIVE CHEF PRABEEN PRATHAPAN INTRODUCES HIS NEW CAREFULLY

CURATED DINING MENU FOR LUNCH IN THE WIDELY POPULAR A+O AT BALBOA BAY RESORT

The perfection of al fresco dining –raise your glass around a fire pit, order a new appetizer or go for a group of new tastes for your palate, enjoy the longer, sunnier days on the patio. At A+O Restaurant & Bar, you can kick off the day with a Pinã Con-Nada (coconut, agave, pineapple juice) and a Wellness Omelet or Chorizo Benedict for breakfast, you can drink Rosé All Day and you can experience a scrumptious lunch or a decadent dinner; all in a day.

The Lobster Roll at A+O is one of those dishes that has imprinted itself on my mind. The restaurant’s focus is on fresh, casual food created by Chef Prabeen Prathapan, Executive Chef of the Balboa Bay Resort & Club. For a dream starter pairing, order a Fancy Margarita and PCH Fries (chives, parmesan, coastal spice

blend, gochujang aioli). Nurture your soul with a Namaste Bowl made up with wild rice, namaste yogurt, grilled vadouvan-spiced baby squash, roasted sweet peppers, cucumber, pea sprouts, and avocado, and then further elevate your experience with the warm Peach Cobbler with local peaches from VR Farms, oatmeal streusel and vanilla bean ice cream.

You don’t need a reason to order the very fresh and luscious VR Heirloom Tomato Burrata appetizer, it’s that good. Share the divine Chopped Salad and pair it with the exceptional and plated-to-perfection grilled 8-ounce Wagyu Hanger Steak; brushed with a miso dijonaise during grilling and served alongside smashed fingerling potatoes and a luxurious parmesan demi.

For your drink options, let curiosity lead

the way with some fancy-named Margaritas… the refreshing Watermark with the incredibly smooth finish Flecha Azul Blanco is made with summer’s sweet watermelon, lemon juice, lime juice and simple syrup. For the spicy palette, the Mr. Pablo margarita packs a punch from the smokey 400 Conejos Mezcal, a charred green poblano liquor, Ancho Reyes Verde, cucumber, cilantro, jalapeño, lime juice and a Tajin rim. And here’s my best summer tip, if you’re toasting a special occasion or just want to cool off during the dog days of summer, ask your A+O bartender to add a splash of champagne to your favorite Margarita for a festive, bubbly touch!

For guests and locals, this is the perfect spot for easygoing waterfront dining. Do order my favorite take on a classic, the BBR Newport Espresso Martini will delight your palate. Or

make it the summer of Rosé Champagne…it makes any breakfast, lunch or dinner special. It now accounts for 18% of Champagne exports to the U.S. and we drank nearly six million bottles of the stuff last year. The balance between fruit and acidity is perfect in the rosé wines from Provence and the AIX Vin de Provence Rosé is my favorite glass on the wine list at A+O. Buy a bottle for home, which comes in every size, up to a 15-liter Nebuchadnezzar!

Coastal décor and a harbor view patio, serving comforting classics and delicious innovations delivers the perfect night out. For a taste of coastal charm at the Balboa Bay Resort, experience A+O’s Tequila Hour every Monday through Thursday from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. Weekend long lunches and warm weeknight dinners are the best way to celebrate summer.

Meet the Magic Behind a Balboa Bay Blowout

BREAUNNA CUNNINGHAM SHARES HER STORY, MUST-HAVE PRODUCTS, AND WHAT TO EXPECT FROM EVERY EXPERIENCE AT THE BALBOA BAY CLUB DRYBAR.

Q: How did you start your journey with drybar?

A: I was referred by a friend and originally started at the Huntington Beach location until we found out that they would be opening a location here at Balboa Bay Club. I was asked if I was willing to transfer, I happily accepted and began my journey here! There is something so special about this as I helped open this location as a Bartender (front desk associate), transitioning to Assistant Manager, until I eventually took on the role of Shop Manager.

Q: What new trends can Members look forward to at drybar this summer?

A: There are always new product drops throughout the year. Stay tuned for new launches coming soon!

Q: What are your favorite drybar products?

A: My favorite drybar product at the moment is our liquid glass high gloss

smoothing blowout cream. It works with all hair types to achieve a smooth, shiny blowout all while protecting the hair from heat and acting as an anti-frizz shield.

Q: How do you ensure that every Member has an exceptional experience at drybar?

A: Everyone that walks through our door gets a warm welcome and a complimentary beverage. The goal is to have them leave our salon feeling better than when they came in. Our BBC Members, however, get all of these perks from the comfort of their private club. They can go grab lunch at Members Grill after their service or come in after their workout. They can even treat themselves to a massage/ facial then come in and have their hair done.

Q: What makes the Balboa Bay Club drybar different from other locations?

A: Our shop has an exceptional location on the bay and we are also a small shop that has a very personable feel. Throughout my 3.5 years as the Shop Manager, I have worked very hard on staff

retention and consistency so that clients are seeing the same faces and receiving the same quality blowouts every time they visit us.

Q: How do you collect and utilize Member feedback to improve services at drybar?

A: drybar does send out a survey that allows clients to leave their honest feedback. We take what clients are loving and apply it to every service/experience and we take constructive feedback and an opportunity to learn and grow.

Q: drybar places a strong emphasis on its company culture and values. How have you contributed to fostering and maintaining this culture within your team?

A: Since starting with the company 6 years ago, I have worked in every role and understand what it is like from all angles. I work hard on keeping my team happy by having an opendoor policy so they can come to me with anything but also challenging them to be their best selves. We set goals for each other and we work together to achieve those goals!

INSIDE THE RARIFIED WORLD OF NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB

Dear NBCC Members,

Golf is always a good idea.

I love reading about golf, talking about golf, playing golf, being around golf—it is both a passion and obsession, personally and professionally.

During a recent read of the daily morning news, I came across this headline in an article from The Wall Street Journal. Written by Callum Borchers, it states, “Standout golfers who aren’t quite PGA Tour material now have somewhere else to play professionally: Corporate America.”

The article continued to say, “People who can smash 300-yard drives and sink birdie putts are sought-after hires in finance, consulting, sales and other industries, recruiters say. In the hybrid work era, the business golf outing is back in a big way.”

Tee times, relationships, business deals and networks have long taken place on the golf course. In today’s remote and hybrid work environment, there’s an interest and even a need for business meetings that take place on the golf course. Clients and partners enjoy being around people who share similar interests and are really skilled in those interests or areas.

For kids and junior athletes, golf provides so many potential opportunities for future growth and personal development. The game of golf teaches life lessons that include sportsmanship, integrity and communication skills in a way that doesn’t exist in other sports—all lessons we would want the next generation to learn and exemplify.

This summer, we launch our most complete junior golf program for youth of all ages, with full details available in your member app. Our Junior Golf and Coaching Academy will show our development model along with programs ranging from camps, SNAG Golf, Operation36, Play with a Coach and Tournament Series to Home/Home Play. We have programs for juniors as young as age 4 all the way up to a path for our most competitive players.

Golf is a great activity for children. It teaches great life lessons and also opens up for future career opportunities. Golf is always a good idea—whether for today or for the future.

All the best, Robin Shelton

Embracing Change

CARLO BORUNDA, DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION AT NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB, DISCUSSES WHY THE PROS CHANGE THEIR BALLS AND GLOVES OFTEN—AND WHY YOU SHOULD, TOO.

Golf is a sport that requires regular practice and, as such, your gear may get worn out. But how do you know if it’s still good or if it needs to be replaced?

With the current state of the golf world, it’s safe to assume that newer items can last longer than ever before. But the other side of the coin is that technology is always changing, products are always advancing and your best bet is to have the latest and greatest if you want to be at the top of your game.

“The golf ball manufacturing process has advanced to the point that a golf ball can now

Above: As shown here with a Foresight launch monitor, a newer wedge with clean grooves, produces a noticeable amount more backspin than an older wedge with worn-down and dirtier grooves.

Left: Your grip pressure determines how well you control the golf club. Clean your grips periodically for better results and replace worn-out grips as soon as possible.

be used for more rounds of golf than ever before, as long as there are no visible damages to the cover and the shape has not changed,” says Carlo Borunda, the director of instruction at Newport Beach Country Club. “Golf balls have a shelf life of approximately five years, which means that the golf balls stored in your garage can still be played. The newest version will perform better as a result of advances in how golf balls are designed.”

Here, Borunda reveals more about the benefits of using a new ball regularly, when to replace your gear and some of the best options on the market.

BAY WINDOW: What are some benefits of playing a new ball versus a used golf ball?

CARLO BORUNDA: Golfers may notice changes in performance between a premium multilayer golf ball and a value-based twopiece version. The primary advantage will be cost. This can be especially useful if you play on a difficult golf course where you frequently lose your ball. Most two-piece golf balls are engineered to spin less, which translates to more distance. The multilayer golf ball will outperform the two-piece golf ball on approach shots to the green, where spin is essential for controlling trajectory and accuracy. This could

Using properly maintained equipment,

be the determining factor for a golfer looking to get better when it comes to ball selection.

BW: How do worn grips affect the way you play and when should they be replaced?

CB: Grips that are in poor condition can affect the golfer’s ability to maintain club face control and limit club head speed due to the excessive tension applied in the hands as the golfer attempts to hold onto the club during their swing. A grip in good condition should feel tacky and show little to no wear. Wash each grip with warm water and dish soap on a regular basis to keep them from wearing out prematurely. Replace your grips as soon as you discover wear marks and damage to the thumb region. Another sign that your grips need to be changed is when they feel firm and have a glossy appearance. [Grips on] frequently used clubs, such as the driver and wedges, should be replaced more often. The remainder of your set needs new grips at least once a year if you play 12 or more rounds of golf annually.

BW: How does a golf glove help the golfer and when should they be replaced?

CB: An aid to help the golfer grip the club is the glove. Golfers traditionally wear one on their lead hand. Wearing a glove on each hand is more commonplace for anyone looking to protect their hands or when switching to rain

gloves. In any case, make sure your hands and grips are dry and clean to prevent your gloves from wearing out too quickly. Keep a supply of extra gloves and switch to a dry glove if one starts to become wet from sweat or damp playing conditions. Any ripped or loose-fitting gloves should be replaced as this can make it harder for you to handle the golf club.

BW: When should you replace wedges?

CB: Your wedges are important clubs for achieving lower scores. When the club face makes contact with the golf ball, backspin is generated, which assists in controlling the trajectory and roll of the ball after it lands on the putting green. Dull or dirty grooves will limit your ability to produce sufficient backspin with your approach shots to the green. After each usage, clean the grooves with a wire brush or the sharp edge of a tee. It is recommended that your wedges be replaced after the grooves have worn down due to heavy use or aging.

BW: What are some of the best balls to purchase, in your opinion?

CB: Premium golf balls from major brands— like Bridgestone, Callaway, TaylorMade and Titleist, among others—are all excellent choices. Since each company competes to gain the golfers’ allegiance, their products continue to improve

When playing a round of golf, you should consider the quality of your golf ball. A scuffed ball will not perform as well as a brand-new one. If distance is your priority, a quality twopiece ball is a great option. A practice/range ball is the least consistent ball to use due to the amount of hits they receive daily.

each year. I play the Callaway Chrome Tour X as they provide exceptional control around the greens and added distance with my driver. Each manufacturer offers a variety of golf balls to meet the needs of the player. Some may want more distance while others seek a more responsive ball for approach shot accuracy. It’s important to communicate your preferences to your golf professional so they can assist you in selecting the appropriate ball. Also, keep in mind that the golf ball will improve each year as innovation continues to develop. It is worth visiting each manufacturer’s website to stay up to date on what has changed.

BW: What are some of the best gloves to use?

CB: Callaway, FootJoy, TaylorMade and Titleist offer some of the best choices in glove material. The common materials are cabretta leather, a synthetic leather or a combination of the two for more durability and improved fit. I prefer the softer and thinner cabretta leather gloves from Callaway. I always use a newer glove for course play and wear my older gloves for practice.

BW: Are there any other things that should be changed?

CB: You can’t forget your feet! These days, many recreational golfers prefer spikeless shoes. In general, they are more fashionable and comfortable to wear. When it’s tournament time or when playing an important round, I prefer to wear more technically stable golf shoes with soft spikes on the bottom. These shoes have interchangeable spikes that need to be replaced periodically throughout the year due to wear and tear.

PERSONAL TRAINER AND GROUP FITNESS INSTRUCTOR KYLE NAFFZIGER FINDS

PEACE AND COMFORT IN HIS POSITION AT NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB.

When Kyle Naffziger first came to Newport Beach Country Club in the summer of 2021, he started as a greenskeeper. Eager to get back into the workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic, a family member suggested that he think about where he’d like to spend his days and then seek out a job that would align with that. As he’d been spending his days at the driving range, NBCC seemed like the perfect fit.

“It was perfect during the pandemic,” he notes. “I was outside on a beautiful golf course learning about agronomy—very hands-on work, from raking bunkers to cutting cups. I have a lot of respect and appreciation for what goes into maintaining a top-quality course.”

Before coming to the club, Naffziger studied at Arizona State University and earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science with a minor in nutrition and an emphasis on the Mediterranean diet, which he explored fully through semester

abroad programs in Spain and Italy. After graduating, he served as director of baseball operations for Body Technologies, a fitness training company based in Arizona, where he coached competitive youth teams, held private lessons that focused on skill development and conducted body composition evaluations.

As such, it’s only natural that Naffziger would move into the fitness realm here at NBCC. In January of 2023, he switched to the recreation side of things as a personal trainer, group exercise instructor and coach. Now certified through both the American College of Sports Medicine and the Titleist Performance Institute, he is able to find joy in his work.

“I thoroughly enjoy helping our members achieve their goals,” Naffziger explains. “The best part of training is witnessing their progress and dedication pay off. Having the opportunity to educate members on the science behind their workouts, [plus] proper form and nutrition, helps empower them to make informed decisions for their overall health.”

Naffziger currently teaches eight classes a week at NBCC, ranging from strength resistance training and circuit conditioning to golf performance training. He also trains members in one-on-one fitness sessions, typically running 16-20 individual lessons each week. On top of all of that, he helped design the new six-week, TPI-backed golf performance program that rolled out in mid-June. Through it, members are learning about swing mechanics, power and speed for a unique experience that will seamlessly enable them to navigate the worlds of golf and fitness simultaneously.

Over the last few years, the property has come to mean a lot to Naffziger. “NBCC feels like home,” he says. “It is rare to find a

place of employment that has the staff’s best interest in mind. Management does a great job of making you feel heard: consistently making improvements, staying up to date with technology, and [providing] great communication with members and staff, [all of which] make this place feel warm and inviting.”

Outside of work, Naffziger is an avid golfer though he also enjoys snowboarding and comes from a fitness background that spans baseball, soccer and basketball. He also has a passion for reading, creating his own music and spending time with his friends and family, including his parents and his younger sister who he says keep him steady and are his biggest supporters. “I’m extremely thankful for them and for everything they’ve done,” Naffziger says. “They’ve instilled great qualities in me that I plan to one day pass on to my family.”

Although he hopes to one day train elite level athletes, either for a professional team or as a personal business, right now he’s just enjoying time spent at NBCC’s one-of-a-kind property.

Gaining for Golf

THIS SUMMER, DEVELOP YOUR STRENGTH AND STAMINA IN THE GYM TO IMPROVE OUT ON THE COURSE.

When it comes to golf, every player knows that practice doesn’t necessarily make perfect—but it certainly doesn’t hurt either. Anything you can do to improve your game even the slightest bit can have a big impact when you’re out on the golf course. This can range from spending more time on the driving range to using tools and monitors to track your progress. But one somewhat unexpected thing that can really help is amping up your workout routine.

According to Bianca Gillett, the director of fitness and recreation at Newport Beach Country Club, there are three main reasons as to why lifting weights in the gym can help you improve. The most obvious, of course, is that it builds body strength, which can improve your endurance and allow you to tackle more holes with less pain or fatigue. “And, with more strength, most golfers naturally find themselves driving and hitting the golf ball further than before,” she adds, noting that even professional PGA golfers have become more vocal about their weight training routines.

Another reason to start training with weights is to increase your range of mobility. To complete a proper swing, the sport requires rotation of the spine and thoracic region of your body. The exercises you will learn in the fitness center can help lengthen tissues, relax your nervous system, allow better joint movement and activate neuromuscular systems. “Those are all very important when it comes to playing a sport like golf,” Gillett says.

Though both of those reasons are surely enough to convince you to try your hand at weightlifting, possibly the most enticing of all is the fact that it can increase longevity.

“With golf being a one-sided sport that requires a lot of rotational movement, most aged golfers are forced to quit the sport because their backs are in too much pain and they are advised to stop playing,” Gillett explains. “With proper weight training and core strengthening, golfers can gracefully play well into their 70s and 80s.”

Read on to discover more about how to properly train to improve your game.

ESTABLISHING A ROUTINE

The easiest way to make something a habit is to create a routine surrounding it. Gaining strength can help golfers of any age, but you likely won’t see the improvements you’re seeking unless you stick with your new workout for a while. But how do you know what to do?

“Golf is not a cardiovascularly demanding sport like soccer,” Gillett notes. “Cardio is

beneficial for a lot of reasons, but it honestly will not make a significant improvement to golf performance.”

Instead, she recommends coming up with a weight regimen and increasing the amounts as you go. “Something like progressive overload goes into play here—meaning you need to continuously increase weight load to continue building more strength and muscle,” she explains. “Body weight can only get you so far.”

While it’s possible to work with weight machines and get results, golfers will benefit most from functional exercises that incorporate weights. Gillett says you should keep your focus on the glutes (legs and butt) and lats (back) if you’re looking to sharpen up your golf game. In addition, make sure to build your core strength and mobility. Because it may be difficult to determine what you should do, she suggests working with a

professional to get started on the right track. “Seek professional help from a trainer to learn corrective form and movements and learn strength training exercises that you can eventually do on your own once you and the trainer feel the time is right,” she notes.

Form is crucial to building strength and muscle. Another way to develop this with ease is in a group class or through personal training, both of which you can find right here at NBCC. “We offer personal training with a golf fitness focus and offer group classes like Golf Strength Performance Training. With the new outdoor gym space, we plan to add more classes like [one on] golf mobility,” Gillett says.

Visit the fitness center today to learn more about how you can enhance your strength, develop your muscles and improve your overall health through weight training.

Summer of Love

NOW

THAT THE GRAY AND GLOOM ARE GONE, IT’S TIME FOR FUN WHITES AND REDS ALL SUMMER LONG.

Check out some of my new favorite wines from our travels, with tastings available at Newport Beach Country Club throughout the summer.

We recently took a group of members to Santa Ynez for a wine excursion that we plan to continue doing each year. The first stop was The Foley Food & Wine Society tasting room in the Hotel Californian right in the heart of Santa Barbara. There, we had a slew of wines from the Foley Estates wine group, including the Four Graces pinot noir, which was a shining star with pleasant aromas of black cherry, red raspberry, and hints of baking spice and rich dark chocolate that lead to bright red fruit flavors.

We concluded the trip with the infamous winemaker Jeff LaBarge at his favorite location for over 10 years now, Gainey Family Vineyards & Tasting Room. Nestled right in the heart of Santa Ynez, it is truly a sight not to be missed. Having been in the area for more than 40 years, Gainey is truly iconic and has been a frontrunner for developing California’s Central Coast wine scene. On a day where the temperature was over 80 degrees in April, the sauvignon blanc was the most refreshing libation and had to take a spot on our list. Crafted entirely from grapes grown on their warm climate ranch in the eastern Santa Ynez Valley, the estategrown sauvignon blanc boasts bright citrus, honeydew melon, mineral and subtle herb aromas. On the palate, the wine is rich, mouthwatering and beautifully structured, with vibrant grapefruit, melon and guava flavors culminating in a long, crisp finish invigorated by zesty citrus, spice and mineral tones.

Summer is always about light and approachable wines in every category. So we have to include some Old World

styles that can be enjoyed poolside. Sancerre, a sauvignon blanc from the Loire Valley region of France, is a must and we were finally able to secure some from Alphonse Mellot. As far back as the 16th century—1513 to be exact—local records mention the Mellot family, whose life, even at the time, was governed by the seasons of the vine and the production of excellent quality wines. These varietals are produced from the upper Sancerre vineyard, the most famous of which is Domaine de la Moussiere. Its exceptional caliber has led to it being officially classified as a unique category amongst Sancerre wines.

Half bottles have been a passion as well, for the ability to change with each course. As we continue to build our program beyond

Champagne, we have found some incredible players in Bordeaux and Burgundy, like Blason D’Issan with blackberry, blueberry, graphite, clove, tobacco and mahogany on the nose. It’s a medium-to full-bodied wine with firm, fine-grained tannins—very tight and refined with a mineral finish, pretty finesse and focus. For the lighter reds, be sure to try Jean-Claude Ramonet’s ChassagneMontrachet Rouge. Pierre Ramonet had a peasant background and became a legend by creating one of the finest domaines in Burgundy through sheer hard work and a genius mind for wine. Ramonet wines are in a class of their own: Jean-Claude and Noël are the third generation producers of the domaine, known for wines with high overall consistency and excellence.

If you’re just in search of that one special glass to enjoy with dinner, look at our Coravin wine program. Saint Julien is positioned as a totally separate vineyard and a real clos, or enclosed-wall vineyard, and offers the 2009 Clos du Marquis, a blend of 70% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot and the rest cabernet franc and petit verdot. Created by Jean-Hubert Delon, it is a beauty. Crème de cassis notes intermix with some vanillin, crushed rock and spring flowers, which make the flavor jump from the glass. Full-bodied and powerful, this is a generously endowed, rich wine that was first made in 1902. Think of it as a true classified growth, although technically it is not.

Come grab a glass and let’s toast to another incredible summer here at NBCC.

Dear BBC Members,

Summer is in full swing at Balboa Bay Club, and it is great to see our members enjoying all the wonderful events at the Club. Last month’s Father’s Day Car Show was a great success and the biggest show yet! It featured race cars, classic cars, muscle cars and yes, there was even a helicopter sighting. Dads, their kids, great cars to enjoy and the beautiful Newport Bay as a backdrop all served to make Father’s Day the best that it could be.

June also featured our second annual Employee Scholarship Golf Tournament which was held at Newport Beach Country Club. Thanks to your generosity, we raised over $20,000 for the scholarship program. If you missed the golf tournament but would still like to donate, checks may be dropped off or mailed to the membership office and made payable to Desert Community foundation with “Balboa Bay Club Employee Scholarship Fund” referenced on the check. For more information on the scholarship program or how to donate online please stop by the membership office or call our Membership Coordinator, Tracey Mines at 949-630-4353.

The fun continues this month with our annual Independence Day Celebration on the beach and lawn. As a reminder, this is a “members only” day at the Club. We are happy to welcome members’ guests for the remainder of the holiday weekend. We also recommend you carpool or rideshare to ensure a safe holiday. There is also plenty of memberonly bicycle parking located on the boardwalk between B and C docks. As a courtesy to our residents, there is no overnight parking of bicycles.

July will also mark the return of our summer concert series and who better to kick things off than the Tijuana Dogs on Friday, July 12th. Be sure to make your reservation early as this concert sells out every year. While you’re at it, secure your spot for our Joseph Phelps Winemaker Dinner on the 17th of July and the return of the Chili Cookoff on Sunday, July 28th! All the details are covered on our preview pages or stop by the club desk for more information.

Don’t forget, we make it easier for you to “sail” into summer with our “Members Only” three-hour Duffy parking in the B Lagoon. Make it a date night with a bay cruise, dinner in Members Grill and a tranquil cruise back home as you watch the sun setting. Or watch the sunrise as you head over to the Club for a morning workout.

As you can see, we plan to keep the fun going all summer long so be sure to keep up with the weekly email blast so you don’t miss any of it!

As always, thank you for your continued support of the Club!

Happy Birthday America

BBC 4TH CELEBRATIONS ARE THE BEST IN THE WEST!

Ilove the Fourth of July – any reader of my columns knows this. Celebrating the freedoms that we uniquely have in the United States is truly one of the highlights of the year for me. Over the years, I have been very blessed to experience this wonderful day all across our great country. I have spent Independence Day in a small town in Wyoming, with the Boston Pops, at baseball games on both coasts, in Mammoth on the lake, and all manner of places in between. However, in my humble opinion, none of these experiences come close to matching the

joy that being at the Bay Club brings to my family and I for Independence Day.

In small towns, the whole community shuts down in celebration of our nation –coming together at the local high school or a local park. I loved seeing multiple generations of families bringing a picnic or grilling in the park, sharing time with their families and their communities. Often, groups of adults watch on as the younger generation runs around through some sort of games/activity set up. Here, we all gather at our communal place – the Bay Club. We

have the luxury of the beachside grill and our kids run around in their bathing suits. As with any community, we come together to celebrate the United States, to enjoy our freedoms, and to watch as the younger generation celebrates through playing with their friends and neighbors – we just get to do it on one of the best strips of Newport Harbor in the pool and on the beach.

The staff at the Bay Club work tirelessly to make the Fourth of July festivities here at the club second to none. It starts from the minute you arrive and see the wonderful decorations throughout both the club and resort (including lots of bunting – personally my favorite decorations of the season). During the day, there is music, drinks, and incredible food to occupy what is always a beautiful summer day. Then, as the sun goes down, there is always a nighttime spectacular. There is truly nowhere else in Newport Beach with as many different options and ways to celebrate as a family.

One of my favorite aspects of Independence Day, no matter where I am, is the (safely and legally performed, of course) fireworks shows. One underrated aspect of celebrating at the Club is that from our beach, we get to continue our wonderful day by having a perfect view of the fireworks shows from all across Newport Beach, and many years, down the coast to Laguna, without having to leave the same spot we’ve been in for most of the day. It is truly a day full of activity, all at one wonderfully convenient location.

Hopefully, I’ll see you at the Club, but however you choose to celebrate, here’s hoping that it is a safe, and meaningful Fourth of July!

The Gold Standard

BBC’S MADDIE MUSSELMAN HEADS TO PARIS

History is about to be made as Paris 2024 approaches.

Two members of Team USA Women’s Water Polo will be representing the Balboa Bay Club in Paris 2024. Maddie Musselman will again join Kaleigh Gilchrist and the team to defend their world titles and gold medals this summer. To say it is special is an understatement, having both women growing up at the Bay Club. Swim team,

team to a seasoned leader is a testament to her resilience and dedication. Grateful for the experiences that shaped her, she acknowledges the invaluable lessons learned along the way. "I went from the young one who knew nothing and got to walk in the shadows and the footsteps of all these amazing athletes," Musselman reflected. "I learned how to be a good leader, how to communicate effectively, and become more experienced in the sport itself and more confident in who I am."

jumping off the dock and slide into the bay, junior guards and training in the Bay Club gym were regular daily activities.

Making her Olympic debut at the 2016 Rio Games, Maddie showcased her talent by scoring 12 goals as Team USA clinched gold. In 2020, at the pinnacle of her career, Musselman tallied an impressive 18 goals, securing the tournament MVP title and her second Olympic gold medal. Musselman's transformation from a novice on the

Now, as Team USA gears up for the 2024 Paris Olympics, Musselman finds herself on the cusp of making history. The team has the opportunity to secure an unprecedented fourth consecutive Olympic gold, a feat never achieved before in water polo—neither in the women's nor the men's category. Team USA Women’s Water Polo heads to Paris as the top-ranked team globally, reclaiming their dominance at the World Championships in Doha earlier this year with a triumphant gold medal finish. Their victory marked a resurgence after a surprising absence from the podium at the 2023 event in Japan, halting a streak of four consecutive world titles. Securing their spot in the Olympics, Team USA clinched gold at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, solidifying their status as formidable contenders on the international stage.

All eyes this summer in Paris will focus on our BBC women reaching for gold.

RARE AND UNIQUE RESIDENTIAL LIVING ONLY AT BALBOA BAY RESIDENCES ON THE NEWPORT HARBOR.

DESIGN AND PHOTOS BY BARCLAY BUTERA

Harbor Views with Barclay Butera

Nothing is more quintessential California and Newport Beach fabulous as the magnificent properties with harbor views. These elegant stately homes are sprinkled along the shoreline of the waterways, taking advantage of the magnificent yachts and sailboats floating by; the sunshine, the seagulls, the warm, soft sand all set the mood. At Barclay Butera Interiors, we pride ourselves on designing homes that accentuate being on the waterfront, but still retain their cozy and charming

qualities. It’s important to mix warm, soft wood, with light, white crisp fresh paint, adding neutrals with a splash of blue to pay homage to the crystal azure blue waters of Newport Beach. Natural organic materials, such as soft marble enhance the powder rooms. Performance fabrics, soft driftwood, and sand with nubby textures round out the mix. This allows the home to be elegant with a “lived-in” vibe; no question we love a comfortable yet glamorous interior!

The Lifeguard Life Starts Early

BBC/NBCC KIDS PARTICIPATING IN THE CITY’S JR. GUARD PROGRAM SHARE LIFELONG EXPERIENCES ONLY AVAILABLE TO A FORTUNATE CITIZENRY LIVING ON THE CALIFORNIA COAST.

Amonth after the world recognized the 80th anniversary of the allied landings on the beaches at Normandy, this community is celebrating a beach-swarming milestone of its own.

Half as many years ago, in 1984, a summer water safety program for kids made its first splash in the ocean. Now in 2024, the Newport Beach Junior Lifeguards Program is riding a generational wave better than ever in

its 40th year.

“I was in it the very first summer,” relates Kasey Solesbee, a member of the Balboa Bay Club swim team for ‘all her summers’ when she was growing up Kasey McCoy. “It was a much smaller program then and I was pretty much forced to do it. And I’m glad I did.”

“For me it was the first time I had ever gone into the water at the Wedge,” she continues. “It was very scary. And I remember getting slammed (into the shoreline). But afterward,

I felt there were very few experiences in the ocean that scared me after that.”

Thirty-something years later, Kasey applied her own use of force to persuade her two daughters, Stella and Skyler, to join the Jr. Guards. Mom told the girls if they didn’t participate for at least one summer, she’d be on hand with all their teenage friends at the beach as their personal parental lifeguard. Reluctant at first, both sisters went through three years of Jr. Guards enthusiastically.

“I made one of my very best friends from that program,” Stella Solesby says. “I always looked forward to it every single day I would get ready to go. I thought it was so fun!”

Stella talks about the confidence and maturity she developed, of learning independence and healthy competition on the buoy swims and beach runs. And of course, there’s the definitive moment for every Jr. Guard over the past four decades; the big leap off the Balboa Pier.

“The overall anticipation was that everyone was so fearful of it,” Stella describes. “After you did it, you felt so proud. Such a big, impactful thing in Newport is you jump off the pier if you’re in the guards.”

“Junior guards is arguably the coolest part of growing up in Newport,” reflects Joe Skinner, another BBC member who rode bikes with his brother Sam through three years’ worth of the program. Their father Blain Skinner says his now grown sons benefitted from the athletic training, character building, and important water safety aspects of the program.

The uniform red swimwear, bucket hats and Jr. Guard logo backpacks are the standard gear the pre-and-early-teen participants wear proudly around town, then hold onto as nostalgic trophies in later years. Now, also relegated to nostalgia, is the old triple-wide trailer next to Balboa Pier that served as the Jr. Guards’ base for four decades.

On the opening day of the guards program last month, the newly constructed Newport Beach Junior Lifeguards Headquarters was dedicated with more than 1,430 participants in this year’s program gathered for the event. The single-story solid concrete facility with sliding glass doors and a spacious beach-facing back

patio is an invaluable improvement, according to Captain Gary Conwell, head of the lifeguard training program.

“It’s done a lot for morale,” Captain Conwell said. “We have a communications center where staff can collaborate, we can teach with visual aids. We now have real lockers to store gear –not just an old trailer. Hygiene is important and we have a place to shower. It’s a state-of-the-art facility.”

Among the thousands of Jr. Guard graduates over the years are many hundreds of young athletes who’ve gone on to contribute to the perennially excellent swimming and water polo programs at Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar high schools. A few have gone on to compete in the Olympics. And then there’s Ben Carlson.

July 6th is Ben Carlson Day in Newport Beach, honoring the only lifeguard in the 101 year history of the guards to sacrifice his life in the line of duty. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the tragic event and the Jr. Guards program will commemorate him with a special swim and run on Tuesday, July 2nd, Carlson’s birthday (the 6th falls on a Saturday).

Just 32 years old, Carlson was already a 15-year veteran lifeguard and a former Jr. Guards instructor. Toward the end of a long 4th of July weekend, in which 564 rescues were recorded, Carlson and Gary Conwell raced in a boat to the Wedge where yet another swimmer was in distress. Carlson dove in, as duty calls –and as Ben would do. The man was saved but Carlson was lost and his body surfaced three hours later.

Conwell describes his friend as the heart and soul of the lifeguards’ creed. An always eager

big wave surfer, a former water polo player at UC Irvine, his legacy lives on in the Ben Carlson Memorial Scholarship Foundation established by his family and friends. In 2016, the foundation donated the elegantly-standingtall statue of Carlson looking out over the Pacific. It’s the centerpiece of the plaza in front of the Newport Beach Pier and the adjacent lifeguard headquarters that now carries his name.

“What he did made such a big impact on the lifeguard program,” Kasey Solesbee reflects. “It’s about self-sacrifice.”

The Ben Carlson Memorial Scholarship Foundation has been instrumental in advancing water safety programs through the California Water Safety Coalition while awarding over $250,000 to more than 20 deserving local students to further their education.
