CHARLOTTE HAS BEEN A VALUED MEMBER OF THE DRYBAR TEAM AT BALBOA BAY CLUB FOR JUST OVER A YEAR, and it's been a true pleasure to have her with us. She brings a passion for learning and takes pride in every aspect of her work. As a phenomenal hairstylist, Charlotte excels at creating memorable experiences for her clients. If you have the opportunity to sit in her chair, you won’t be disappointed!
1. Describe your background/interest in hair styling. What inspired you to style hair?
From a young age, I had a natural inclination for hair styling, and it became a passion of mine. I think it is so important to enjoy the work we do. It is such a privilege that my work is also my passion and I love that I work in an industry that encourages creativity and authenticity.
2. What do you most enjoy
about being a stylist at the Balboa Bay Club drybar?
The best part of being a stylist here is definitely the team I work with. Everyone goes above and beyond to make sure that our shop runs as smoothly and efficiently as possible and we have such a strong bond as a team that I always look forward to coming to work.
3. What is your signature style or favorite look to create for clients?
My favorite style to do is a
classic blowout with lots of volume and big, bouncy brush curls. It is a super popular look right now and it is so fun to do.
4. What are your favorite drybar products?
Currently, my favorite product is the liquid glass high-gloss smoothing blowout cream. It works with most hair types leaving the hair smooth and shiny while also protecting from heat and preventing frizz. I love how light and bouncy it
makes the hair feel and since it works for a majority of the hair styles that we do, it has more versatility than some of our other products.
5. What hairstyling trends are you most excited about right now and how can members incorporate them into their routines?
The 90s blowout is making a big comeback. Clients are really looking for that effortless, messy, and tousled look. I have seen many innovative ideas about how to recreate the 90s blowout look. Using heatless curlers and leaving them in the hair overnight is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to maintain that look at home.
6. Can you share a memorable experience that highlights why you love what you do?
There isn’t one single experience I can pinpoint that really shows why I love doing hair. However, I love when I do the big reveal at the end and see my client’s face light up. It is so rewarding to see my work help someone else feel beautiful and confident.
“Autumn is the season that teaches us that change can be beautiful.”
We are ready to help you make a real estate-related, “beautiful” change. If you’re a seller, it’s critical to ensure your property is tuned up, show-ready and priced strategically. Overpriced homes that are not prepared for sale are languishing, while properties in high-demand locations, in turnkey condition, are still selling quickly.

Once a car guy, always a car guy and David Lee has always been one. Growing up in the San Gabriel Valley, he was that kid in junior high with a copy of Car & Driver magazine, drawing fancy sports cars in his notebook, and dreaming of the day he’d have one of his own.
It took about another 20 years. Mr. Lee needed to get his driver’s license first, then graduate high school, college, and earn his USC business school degree. Another decade running and expanding his family retail business, Hing Wa Lee Jewelers, and David was ready to make his sports car dream come true.
He saved up and bought himself a preowned luxury Italian sports car; an elite ’90s model from a well-known auto maker. As impressive a show car it may have been,
it wasn’t much of a go-car. Keeping it on the road was a problem and Lee’s first foray into luxury sports cars was not what he expected. Not all Italian sports cars that end in ‘I’ are the same.
“It was a time when my dreams were met but also broken,” he remembers of the gift he bought himself just before his 30th birthday. “I realized how bad it was mechanically. I traded it in for a Ferrari.”
Fast forward to 2024, his acquisitions have multiplied, and David Lee is recognized as one of the foremost Ferrari collectors in the world. His current fleet numbers about 30 of the finest Ferrari models dating back to 1964. All are unique, many of them limited edition, with a collective assessed value over $100 million. As much as he enjoys showing his cars, he likes to drive them even more. He says
he keeps his roster at around 30 Ferraris because that allows him to drive each car at least once a month.
Not limited to Ferrari motor cars, Lee also has collections of unique model Ducati motorcycles, fine wine, precision watches, and autographed classic guitars. Golf is another passion. Since moving to Lido Isle and joining the Newport Beach Country Club a few years back, he’s stepping up his game. Not so much on his scorecard – he admits his handicap is higher than enlistment age – but enjoying the club and getting to know the members.
The NBCC clubhouse actually served as an inspiration for Lee’s latest retail concept. His third jewelry store location had its soft opening this month in West Hollywood, and Lee says it’s designed to give customers a clubhouse-style experience.
“It’s a very special store. It’s more hospitality and less of selling,” he explains. “We’re a client experience store. It’s three stories. There’s an area I put a special Ducati motorcycle, there’s a guitar sitting area and, of course a Ferrari experience. The third floor has a rooftop deck with a great view, a real cool California experience.”
Fairly new to Newport Beach, Lee is eager to share his passion with new friends. He’ll have a few of his Ferraris in the parking lot for the NBCC car event scheduled for October, and a lot of his pals in the show car community will be wheeling in to support it too.
Car shows are semi-regular events at the Hing Wa Lee store in Walnut, where Mr. Lee established Cars & Chronos, a quarterly gathering of car enthusiasts who might also like to take a look at the latest in luxury watches.
“They’re the same guys,” Lee says. “Guys who like luxury cars also like luxury watches, and that’s one of my passions too. So we can have some fun, talk cars and time pieces, and maybe do some commerce.”
The rubber hit the road last month when Lee and his son made their annual drive up the coast for Monterey Car Week, always a highlight of summer. In addition to the Ferrari they drove up in, a handful of others are shipped up north and parked on display at the rented house in Pebble Beach where patrons know to stop by to marvel the collection.
“You have to have fun. It’s a special community and we look for ways to share our passion,” he says. “There are charity events and other gatherings that make people feel good to be a part of.”
Ferrari recognizes Mr. Lee as one of its top-level customers, and a first-rate collector. That affords him VIP treatment from the automaker, including special access to new products and the opportunity to buy the latest limited editions. He buys at least one or more Ferrari models every year.
“I think Ferrari sees me as its unofficial ambassador,” he states proudly.
Once a car guy, always a car guy.

Managing Director Cindy Racco shares a bit of her life’s journey and plans for the Resort and Club.
I grew up in San Antonio, Texas, surrounded by the warmth and love of my two parents who exemplified hospitality in every aspect of their lives. My mother had a tradition during Christmas where she would purchase extra gifts for all age groups and genders, ensuring that any unplanned guests who visited us during the holidays would feel welcomed and appreciated. My father imparted invaluable life lessons to me, one of which was to always have enough money in your wallet to pay your own way and, if possible, to cover the expenses of those you’re with. These principles of generosity and preparedness have stayed with me throughout my life.
As the youngest of four siblings, I was the only one who ventured beyond the borders of our state to explore the world. This adventurous spirit led me to a rewarding career in the luxury hospitality industry, where I had the privilege of working with several renowned hotel companies. My most significant tenure was with Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, where I spent 18 years climbing the ranks to eventually become a General Manager. During my time there, I received extensive training in various aspects of luxury service, including wine, champagne, fashion, and, most importantly, the golden rule of treating others as you would like to be treated.
Today, I am proud to bring my extensive experience and expertise to the Balboa Bay Resort and Balboa Bay Club. Here, I look forward to sharing my knowledge and passion with our esteemed club members, guests, and residents, ensuring that each interaction embodies the same spirit of hospitality and excellence that has guided me throughout my career.
Everyday attire for Cindy is shown here in the pre-function area of the Grand Ballroom hallway. The carpet is lovely, I never noticed the blue color before this shot of Cindy because whenever I’ve been here, hundreds of people are standing, drink in hand, waiting to get in!
Top two photos: The Resort Pool landscape echoes the South of France. Pool umbrellas and lounges are happy with colorful blue and white stripes with scalloped trim. They are inviting and offer relaxing shade after a swim.; In the harbor, yacht Shogun offers a chance to come aboard and join Captain Trevar. Our photographer Chris Darnall, fell in love with all the staterooms (4 staterooms) and lavish salons in common areas. Cindy is ready to sail away in her sky-blue nautical attire seated on deck. Shogun owner Jim Glidewell was gracious to offer his hospitality.; bottom two photos: While lounging by the Resort Pool, it only seems proper and necessary to have a special drink. Here we have Kylie and Paige to serve you. May we suggest a slice of fresh coconut over water, Mai Tai, Piña Colada, or even White Stag…mmmm.; New uniforms have been the most notable change in attire for our employees. Here we have our valets Ivan and Abel in blue striped shirts and navy shorts. Matching shoes are coming.
INSIDE THE RARIFIED WORLD OF NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB
Robin Shelton CCM, PGA Master Professional General Manager
Newport Beach Country Club
In the world of club management, I have one big shortcoming—an Achilles’ heel, if you will.
A fun fact about me: I don’t drink alcohol. I don’t like the taste. And I really do not like the taste of wine. I wish that I could acquire a taste for it. Everything about drinking wine seems to have so much sophistication, character, romanticism and enlightenment. Wine and I just don’t match when it comes to flavor.
However, learning about wines and the winemaking process is fascinating.
This September, the club will host our annual Big Wines, Small Plates event on the Oasis Lawn. Big Wines, Small Plates is one of our signature member events where we go all out, on par with a member-guest tournament or a major holiday brunch.
The timing of our Big Wines, Small Plates in September is not coincidental. For winemakers, the grape harvest is critical and varies depending on grape, variety, region, prevailing climate and wine style. In general, the wine harvest typically occurs during late summer to early or mid-fall, most often between August and November. In the United States, the harvest for sparkling and white wines falls within August or September while red grape varieties are generally harvested during September or October. What better time to celebrate Big Wines, Small Plates than during harvest season? This year’s event will be held on Saturday, September 21.
Another fun fact: Many winemakers perform their harvests at night, allowing freshly picked grapes to not bake in the hot sun while waiting to be transported back to the winery. A winemaker’s greatest nightmare is when grapes get too hot and begin to ferment while in bins during the picking/transportation process, so they are picked at night to preserve their natural acidity.
Big Wines, Small Plates is a fantastic event for both wine tasting and buying. We’ll have over 50 vintners with heavily discounted bottles for purchase. It is an experience that any wine rookie or aficionado will absolutely love.
If you have not met our sommelier, Andrew Cichon, he’s the go-to guy for wine information and recommendations at the club. Chef Graeme Blair is a trained Level 1 sommelier who is a great with pairings and Sarah Sanchez, our director of food and beverage, is a wine connoisseur and foodie extraordinaire. As for me—I’m the go-to anytime someone needs a designated driver.
Our team looks forward to seeing you at Big Wines, Small Plates.
All the best, Robin
Shelton
CARLO BORUNDA, DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION AT NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB, DETAILS HOW TO OVERCOME THE DIFFICULT TASK OF SWINGING FROM THE SAND.
BY ASHLEY RYAN
There are a number of things that can give golfers difficulty while on the course, from water hazards and rough terrain to wind and shot paths that are affected by trees or bushes. But bunkers are one thing that all players, amateur or professional, hope to avoid.
“For amateur golfers, the sand shot is often the most difficult to perform,” says Carlo Borunda, the director of instruction at Newport Beach Country Club. “There are several different ways a golfer can set up and swing in the sand.”
Here, Borunda shares what golfers can do to master a sand swing and why it’s important to return to the fundamentals to do so.
BAY WINDOW: Why is it important to understand the fundamentals of sand shots?
CARLO BORUNDA: More advanced players are capable of making … adjustments to their setup and swing, [but] the average golfer is likely to get more frustrated with each additional. … The best way to get past all of the confusion is to simplify the swing by returning to the fundamentals.
BW: Why is the sand so challenging?
CB: In golf, you are encouraged to make solid contact with the golf ball. The sand shot is where we shift the focus to making contact with only the sand for a green side bunker. In my opinion, hitting sand without contacting the golf ball is the most challenging concept for golfers to understand. It causes confusion
about where to make contact and how much power is needed in the swing. Beyond that, the rules of golf penalize the player for touching the sand during a practice swing. This rule makes it difficult to adequately prepare. Bunker design and the sand itself can vary greatly from one golf course to another. Finally, depending on the etiquette of the golfers who came before you, the conditions in a bunker can be quite poor. All of these variables can make a golfer loathe the sand shot.
BW: How can improving your understanding of sand fundamentals impact your game?
CB: When coaching a player, I start with the fundamentals and progress from there to help them develop and improve their swing.
A drill that improves your ability to consistently control where your club impacts the sand is to carve a straight line in the sand and practice making consistent contact with this line until you can confidently repeat the same impact.
All golfers should attempt to understand the basic concepts associated with each golf swing. A solid grasp of swing mechanics will help you improve contact, consistency, and simplify your swing thoughts. Understanding your own technique will allow you to make the necessary adjustments to your swing and setup while on the golf course.
BW: What are some rules associated with hitting the ball out of the sand?
CB: In accordance with United States Golf Association golf rules, you are not permitted to touch the sand within the bunker in an effort to improve or test the condition of the sand. You are allowed to use a club to support yourself when entering the sand, which could result in touching the sand, but in this case there is no penalty. You are entitled, without penalty, to move loose impediments like leaves, twigs, pebbles or debris from the area where your ball rests, being careful not to touch the sand or move your ball. Touching the sand or causing your golf ball to move when moving a loose impediment will result in a one-stroke penalty, and you must place the moved ball in its original position before playing your next shot.
A couple of rules to remember if your ball is unplayable: you are allowed to take lateral relief inside the bunker by dropping your golf ball within two club lengths, no closer to the hole from the original position, under penalty of one stroke. You are also allowed to drop your golf ball outside the bunker, keeping that position in line with the flag and where your golf ball originally rested, under a twostroke penalty. I recommend downloading the
If you’re having trouble controlling the direction of your sand shots, it is advisable to go back to the basic skill of playing with a square club face.
USGA Rules of Golf app and watching some YouTube videos from the USGA to see how these rules are … [enforced].
BW: What are some tips you have for improving bunker shots?
CB: Choose the golf club for the various bunker distances, just as you would with your approach shot to the green. The loft on a golf club is best used to generate a higher or lower ball flight and more or less roll after the golf ball has landed. A pitching wedge or gap wedge are excellent choices to use when the hole is further away and there is plenty of green to work with. Your most lofted wedges are more appropriate for any shot with a steep bunker face or a hole on the front edge of the green. When practicing, focus your attention on the feel of contact and the sound your club makes when it lands in the sand. When executed correctly, the feel is crisp and the sound has a distinct thud as the club head impacts the sand. Practicing without a golf ball until you can confidently repeat this technique is essential. Only add a golf ball to the practice session after you have developed a better sense of feel for the sand.
BW: What is the simplest approach to a sand shot?
CB: I recommend that you swing with the same setup and speed as you would from a similar distance outside the sand. This will allow you to develop a better awareness of club face alignment and the swing speed required for the shot. For the green side bunker, adjust your mindset to make some contact with the sand slightly behind the golf ball. The amount of sand you interact with
When playing a sand shot, choose the golf club that helps you control the ball flight and the amount of roll needed to be successful.
determines how much effort or swing speed is required to land the ball successfully on the green. A key concept is that the closer your golf club lands to the ball, the less effort is required. If your contact becomes inconsistent, a longer backswing will help you regain your tempo and balance, which are essential for improving contact.
BW: What should your grip, stance and posture be like to master these types of shots?
CB: The advanced player will make several complex adjustments to their setup and swing when playing from a sand bunker. Although these modifications are necessary for some of the more complicated situations, I prefer a more basic setup with a square club face. Aligning yourself squarely with your target is the ideal method for maintaining a consistent swing path. Allow the shaft of the golf club to point toward your midsection as you address the golf ball. This will allow you to interact with the bounce of the club without unnecessarily opening its face. Position the ball toward your left foot (for a right-handed player) at address. Swing with confidence and finish … by turning your upper body to face your target. This will improve the likelihood of sending the sand and golf ball toward your intended target.
BW: Anything else to add?
CB: Remember to leave the bunker in as good of condition as possible—if not better—by raking your divot and footprints before exiting the bunker. I recommend keeping your rake pattern perpendicular to the fairway, but more importantly, in one consistent direction.
NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB HELD ITS BIGGEST GOLF EVENT OF THE YEAR THIS SUMMER: THE MEN’S REGATTA.
BY ASHLEY RYAN
Ever since Bianca Gillett, director of recreation and fitness, arrived at Newport Beach Country Club, there has been a mindful shift toward all things wellness. Her background and expertise have translated expertly, enabling members to learn more about how best to take care of themselves—through fitness, nutrition and beyond.
Part of this movement is the addition of an outdoor fitness area. Located near the recently renovated pool deck, fall is the perfect time to enjoy this alfresco space.
“We are creating a large health and wellness community at NBCC, meaning we have a lot of our members using the fitness center and taking their health seriously,” Gillett explains. “To keep encouraging this healthy lifestyle, we thought it was best to add an additional outdoor gym area so we could add more group exercise classes, bring more personal trainers on staff and we could add a new, fun golf/fitness collaboration program to the club.”
While there are no definitive physical benefits to working out in the outdoors, Gillett says it can be very beneficial mentally, serving as a great way to reduce the stress of everyday life as well as acting as a natural antidepressant due to the fact that sunshine increases seratonin levels and helps improve your mood.
Learn more about this new alfresco space and all that it has to offer members at NBCC.
Each week, there are specific workout classes that are offered at the NBCC fitness center that end up fully booked, with a lengthy waitlist of members hoping to make it in. The majority of these offerings are being extended to the outdoor fitness area, an effort which will ensure that more members can take the same class because the space is a lot larger. This means that even more members
are able to squeeze their workout in and improve their health along the way.
In addition to broadening the scope of fitness favorites, the alfresco space gives the club the chance to add even more classes to its roster, amplifying the number of offerings guests can choose from and providing more options for those with busy schedules.
Some of the classes, like Golf Strength Performance, are beloved classics that are always popular among members. Other options are brand new, like the Movement Mobility classes that help with motility and maneuverability on and off the golf course.
Members can also enjoy tranquil yoga or energetic Zumba, movement-focused Pilates and a generic strength performance classes in addition to FitBody Circuit, a circuit conditioning workshop and Beach Body for those looking to get fit. The lineup is rounded out by a water aerobics offering, which takes place right next door in the NBCC swimming pool.
Golfers will also love a new enhancement offered by the recreation department that give them the opportunity to enhance their skills on the course through sessions at the gym. Special physical fitness programs are in the works that allow golfers to exercise with a Titleist Performance Institute-certified trainer, who can show them the best ways to work out for what they are trying to accomplish on the golf course. These kinds of unique offerings make it easier than ever to get everything you need from NBCC, whether it’s a generic workout or fitness directly related to your golf game.
On top of all of that, the new space has provided the chance for NBCC to add some new trainers to its repetoire. In addition, having two distinct spaces will hopefully reduce the overcrowding that some have experienced both in the gym and during scheduled group classes.
“Besides the new and larger group classes, more personal trainers and fitness programs like the golf fitness, having two gym spaces will ideally limit … overflow or crowded, busy hours at the club so members do not have to wait for equipment or … [can] find space to do functional exercises.”
So next time to make your way to NBCC, check out this new space and let the recreation department know what you think. They’d love to see you try a new class or work out in the great outdoors this fall.
ENJOY A BEHIND-THE-SCENES LOOK AT OUR ANNUAL WINE TASTING EVENT, BIG WINES, SMALL PLATES, WHICH TAKES PLACE LATER THIS MONTH.
BY SARAH SANCHEZ
Wine is a memory: a memory of moments shared between friends and family, a memory of a moment in time. As Mireille Guiliano, former president and CEO of Cliquot, states, “The memory of some bottles can stay with you for life. While the wine doesn’t have to be old and rare, a great old bottle can be like a time capsule, capturing in its flavors and aromas the time and place of its creation.”
Wine is one of the best reasons to host an event at Newport Beach Country Club. Not only is it a common interest between many of our members, but it is also the
perfect opportunity for the creation of those incredible memories. Those memories are then a talking point at the club all yearround. That event for our club is called Big Wines, Small Plates.
Every club seems to have a grand wine tasting event—an event where lines of vendors set up wine bottles next to glasses to offer tastes of different varietals and vintages, with a standard cheese and charcuterie board on a table nearby. Members just need a simple reason to drink wine. So, how do we set ourselves apart? How do we make what seems like a common event one that is unique and special?
First things first, we include two simple elements: food and drink. We host between 45 and 50 vendors every year who bring around 350 wines to taste in all. A 20-page booklet is provided with a detailed listing of all the wines, including case size and price, as well as a listing of the available food, a map of the wine tables and an order form.
Scattered amongst the wine tables are global food stations. Our culinary staff provides small bites of dishes like scallops, lamb, wood-fired pizza, sushi and paella while our pastry chef creates a decadent finish with a custom dessert concocted right in front of the members. The simple parts are
the ones that allow every club to perfect and showcase their talents.
This event has become so popular that members plan their vacations around it. How did an NBCC event get to this point? We load up on the details. We theme the tasting (this year’s is Enchanted Garden), incorporate specific colors, include special decorations, add luxury linens and design the seating area. We make members and their guests feel like they have arrived for an experience rather than a wine tasting. They notice the attention to detail and effort put into the event, and they appreciate the atmosphere we cultivate.
As the guests enter, we have wine glasses engraved with custom logos for them to use and take home as well as wine tags that they
can put their name on—because the more they drink, the better chance that they set their glass down somewhere and can’t find it. We create areas for drinking, eating, dancing and mingling. We never want our members to feel like they have seen everything after the first hour of the event. Then, we have two separate live bands playing in different areas. We also offer an interactive photo booth, a gourmet doughnut wall and an espresso cart to make sure that members leave that event indulged.
But no one ever wants the party to end. Once the vendors go home for the evening, we keep attendees engaged by turning one of the live bands turns into a DJ. The DJ plays music that everyone can dance to to help keep the energy alive. Food typically continues to be offered as well.
After a night of tasting, members crave that late-night burger and salty fries, so we bring the food to them. We offer a late-night food truck, with burgers and tacos being the favorites. We try and provide the details that our members didn’t even know they wanted.
Big Wines, Small Plates is one of the most important events that we host here at the club. It brings family and friends together and creates the opportunity to meet new people as well. We treat these moments as a chance to impact lives as well as to provide something that our members have never seen before—something that makes their lives better for having attended and something to look forward to each year.
Join us for the 2024 iteration of Big Wines, Small Plates on Sept. 21.

FOR FIDEL ROSARIO, WORKING IN GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE AT NEWPORT
BEACH COUNTRY CLUB IS A DREAM COME TRUE—ONE HE HOPES TO CONTINUE UNTIL HIS EVENTUAL RETIREMENT.
BY ASHLEY RYAN
Golf takes a lot of thought. Each athlete, amateur or professional, has a lot to consider, from their swing, stance, posture and grip to the best techniques for placing the ball just where they need it. But what many don’t consider is the hard work that goes into keeping the course in top shape.
Fidel Rosario, who works in golf course maintenance in Newport Beach Country Club’s agronomy department, has spent nearly 20 years making sure the greens are perfectly manicured for golfers to enjoy.
Originally from Oaxaca, Mexico, Rosario came to the United States when he was 35 years old. Before he started working at NBCC, he worked another labor-intensive job, painting Southern California homes.
But it was always his goal to get a job at the club after hearing about how wonderful it was from a car wash worker, and he has felt accomplished ever since achieving that feat.
Now, he is comfortable in his position, having spent much time perfecting it and learning how best to complete his tasks. Rosario says he does a little bit of everything, from checking the greens, changing the cups at the holes and repairing the irrigation system on the course to cutting the grass using a riding mower.
His early-morning arrival allows Rosario to get a head start on work before members show up to NBCC with their clubs in hand, and he says that he feels a sense of calm and enjoys being in the outdoors, feeling the breeze, as he works. One of his very favorite
things is watching the vibrant sunrise from the course.
Outside of work, he really enjoys fitness, making working out and running part of his daily lifestyle. A resident of nearby Costa Mesa, Rosario also loves the outdoors and often combines his two passions while riding his bicycle through local neighborhoods and at picturesque parks in the area.
With so much experience, Rosario says he doesn’t find anything about his job challenging anymore as he’s become a pro, but he still loves all that he does and enjoys going with the flow in the calm environment. He says he plans to spend the rest of his career at NBCC, doing what he loves while being out in nature.

THE 2ND ANNUAL BBC WESTERN NIGHT TAKES THE CROWD SOMEWHERE EAST OF DALLAS FOR A GOOD OLD ROUNDUP, WITH BBQ AND COUNTRY FOOT-STOMPIN’ MUSIC
BY ALEX CHAZEN
As hard as it is to believe, the summer is coming to an end and the kids are going back to school. However, here in beautiful Newport Beach, we are blessed to have weather that makes it feel like what the Beach Boys might refer to as Endless Summer.
As we start to transition back to having the kids back at school, one of our family traditions (or I suppose it’s really just my wife’s and my tradition) is going for a breakfast date the first week of school after dropping the kids off as a way of taking back our days. As partial as I am to the Members Grill brunch (as I’ve written about before), having breakfast while looking out on the harbor and enjoying the outdoor seating at A + O cannot be beat, especially on a typically quiet weekday. We can each go back to our workdays after having some quality time reconnecting after a very hectic summer filled with vacations, camps, long nights at the beach, more camps, and swimming.
One of the biggest advantages to the school year starting when it does is that after school (at least at the beginning of the year before homework and afterschool activities get out of hand), there is still plenty of daylight left to enjoy some time decompressing in the pool. Some kids have a hard time adjusting back to the rigors of
