ENROLLMENT IN ONLINE COLLEGE COURSES IS ON THE RISE BY ANDRÉ COLEMAN
s students proficient in social media and computers enter college, many are enrolling in online degree programs, according to a 2018 study. And now the state is prepared to add its 115th community college, this one entirely online. The California Online Community College will offer on-demand access to education and workforce training for California’s 2.5 million “stranded” adults 25 and older. According to Eloy Ortiz Oakley, California Community College systems chancellor, the online school will use a competency-based education model and plans to begin enrolling students this fall for short-term credentials in three initial areas — medical coding, information technology, and supervisor roles, according to community sollege officials.

“A credential from a California community college is the path to a better life for millions of Californians,” Oakley said in a statement. “The 115th online college will help increase social mobility for California’s working adults seeking better wages within a rapidly changing economy.” According to the report “Grade Increase,” released in January 2018 by the Babson Survey Research Group, more than 6.3 million undergraduate students in the US took at least one online course in the fall of 2016, a 5.6 percent increase from 2015. The survey is based on federal data from more than 4,700 colleges and universities. That was the 14th consecutive year that Babson has reported growth in online enrollment. –CONTINUED ON PAGE 7

“There is no question online education is here to stay,” said Pasadena City College Trustee James Osterling. “As kind of an old school teacher I think there is no substitute for face to face learning. In the ideal world, I think the optimal way is going to be online and in-class face to face learning. I think everybody is trying to sort through that and figure out how to accommodate the online model into education. For working people it might be easier to do some education at work or at home. They can be anywhere in the world.” Online degrees are most commonly offered in business and the health field, but they are becoming increasingly popular in other areas, such as education and engineering. Business is the most popular major for online learners, but education classes are more readily available at major universities, according to the Center for Online Education. Of the 263 schools, 75 offered online courses in education in 2018, including training programs required for teacher certification, as well as education administration programs. Health professions dominate the second and third positions and include nursing and health care administration. Engineering, computer science, and information sciences round out the top five. However, the increase in enrollment for online degree programs is coming at a price for smaller private colleges, where declining enrollments are having an impact on tuition. St. John’s College, with campuses in Annapolis, Maryland and Santa Fe, New Mexico this year reduced its tuition from $52,734 to $35,000, according to NPR.
St. John’s joined more than 20 other private colleges nationwide that have reduced prices in the past three years. In fact, between 2012 and 2016, the total number of students studying strictly on a physical campus dropped by more than 1 million, or 6.4 percent. Enrollment numbers in online classes varies widely from state to state, said Julia Seaman, research director for Babson and a co-author of the study. New Hampshire, West Virginia and Utah are among the states that draw the greatest proportion of out-of-state, online-only students. Online course enrollment is highly concentrated, with just 5 percent of schools accounting for nearly half of all online students. But many students still want access to on-campus resources due to local connections. “It’s the school their co-workers went to; it’s the school that they see the billboard for or the placard on the subway for or something like that — all of which are very, very locally oriented,” Seaman said. The opportunity to switch between a physical classroom and online learning may also be a big factor in the general appeal of local online degree programs. Nearly 53 percent of students who took at least one online course in 2016 also enrolled in a physical class, according to the survey. “The anytime, anywhere piece, they like that, at least for a portion of what they’re doing,” Seaman said. “The second reason tended to be scheduling; it made it possible to do the right courses to get your degree that you could not necessarily do — or do conveniently — if you were taking all on-ground courses.” n EDUCATION GUIDE 2019 PASADENA WEEKLY

PATHS TO SUCCESS A WIDE ARRAY OF CAREER CHOICES AWAIT TODAY’S COLLEGE AND TRADE SCHOOL GRADS BY CARL KOZLOWSKI
four-year college education can easily run into six figures these days, so it’s important to know which career fields are best able to pay off that huge investment. We’ve done some of your homework for you by selecting an array of career options that are both in-demand and pay well so you won’t wind up regretting the most expensive years of your life. Engineers of all stripes are always in demand, with computer software engineering the hottest of these fields. Startups and big companies alike are looking for creative, innovative developers and software engineers to design and refine computer programs. Software engineers develop apps or task-specific programs, or work on the underlying systems that run devices and networks, and the demand for software engineers is expected to grow more than 17 percent by 2022.

To snag one of these positions, you’ll need a bachelor’s degree in computer science, plus strong computer programming skills. But the reward is great, as the median yearly salary is $102,280, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Other top engineering fields include petroleum engineering, where engineers design methods and equipment for the extraction of oil and gas located in reservoirs below the Earth’s surface and get paid up to $176,300 a year to do it. Nuclear engineers make $67,000 to $118,000, chemical engineers make $69,600 to $116,700, and aerospace engineers make $67,400 to $107,900. With the nation growing ever older, health care is another in-demand field — and there’s a shortage of qualified nurses. That makes it a good career opportunity for someone interested in a patient care role. Nurses work in many different settings — hospitals, doctors’ offices, agencies, schools, clinics, and many more — providing and coordinating patient medical care. The demand for registered nurses is expected to grow more than 16 percent by 2022. Those wishing to help with healing will need an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in nursing, or a certificate from an accredited allied health program in nursing, in addition to being licensed. The median yearly salary is $68,450. For those not scientifically inclined, there’s a strong demand for market research analysts, They take raw data and analyze it to understand customers, predict trends, determine pricing and provide valuable feedback from the marketplace. The demand for market research analysts is expected to grow by a huge 19 percent by 2022. Those wanting to explore this career option will need a bachelor’s degree in marketing or economics, although many employers want a master’s degree in addition to strong math and analytical skills. The median annual salary for this career is $62,560. Another good way to soar is through a career in aviation 10

management, working in airline company offices or on the ground at airports. These positions handle administrative services, including employee relations, staff scheduling, budget management and aircraft maintenance planning, while also ensuring adherence to federal government guidelines concerning safety and labor. They also have to deal with emergency situations, inclement weather and the full array of issues facing aircraft and personnel, but for their multi-tiered efforts the salary range is $48,100 to $90,000. Construction management is another prime career field, as these general contractors hold the reins in construction projects from start to finish. Their work ranges from preparing preliminary cost estimates, timetables and budgets and consulting with architects, engineers and other specialists to hiring the subcontractors needed to complete the job. For their many-layered efforts the salary range is $54,000 to $89,900 a year. Finally, one can never go wrong with entering one of the more traditional skilled blue-collar trades, which have the added advantage of requiring a shorter education term in order to land the positions. There are also plenty of openings in such fields as elevator repairmen (median salary $87,000), diesel mechanics ($45,000) and even locomotive engineers ($63,000). So there you have it — a world of options lies before you. Find a passion, explore it, and you’ll likely find a job that both holds your interest and fills your bank account. n

THE RIGHT FIT PUSD COLLEGE ADVISER MO HYMAN HAS PLENTY OF GREAT ADVICE FOR CHOOSING EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES BY CARL KOZLOWSKI
here are many factors that go into college admissions decisions at higher learning institutions nationwide, but one that has long been a concern for student applicants is how extracurricular activities affect their chances at attending the school of their dreams. Whether playing on the football team or solving equations in math club, writing for the school newspaper or arguing logical points in debate team, there are plenty of choices but also the risk that doing too many (or the wrong kind) is a waste of valuable time and energy. One person who’s uniquely qualified to offer advice on the issue is Mo Hyman, who has served as the executive director of College Access Plan for the past 12 years. The nonprofit organization provides services and advice on college access and success at no cost to students attending Pasadena Unified School District schools through partnerships with community-based organizations “One thing that’s absolutely important to know is that admission officers tell us extracurriculars are never going to save a student who’s not competitive in grades or their course load, including taking Advanced Placement or honors classes,” says Hyman. “They are the icing, they are not the cake. From there, one of the things that we’ve noticed in our 12 years of existence is that colleges have become much savvier at recognizing when a student is packing their resume, or doing activities and community service that’s meaningful to

them. Those go hand in hand.” Hyman recommends that students and families employ strategic decisions in their choices for extracurriculars, noting that “it’s better to have depth than breadth.” That means that it’s wiser for students to have a couple of involvements that they truly focus on and show leadership advancement within. It’s also important to pick activities that fit your intended field of study. “If your lifelong dream is to be an engineer but you’ve done nothing in your extras or summer to illustrate that you care at all about engineering, that’s bad,” notes Hyman. “If everything you’ve ever done is in theater, then apply as a theater major. They want to see that you have passion for and embedded yourself in your area of experience. Make sure you’ve dug into your superpowers.” Teenagers are known to have ever-shifting interests as they define their identities, and Hyman says that should not be a concern for students as they choose what groups they want to join. But, if a student does make a dramatic shift in their participation midway through their high school careers, Hyman notes that it’s important to have a strong narrative explanation of those decisions. “The most important thing for a student who was crazy about photography for a few years but took horrible pictures and changed interests, is they should be able to tell that story,” says Hyman. “Be able to say, ‘you’ll notice I was really eager about photography a couple years back but I learned I wasn’t as passionate as I thought I was.’ You don’t have to stay with something that you changed your mind about, but reflect your authenticity. Colleges can smell inauthenticity, and the most competitive schools have the most honed noses.”

EDUCATION GUIDE 2019 PASADENA WEEKLY
Students should first make their selections from among the opportunities offered by their own school, rather than outside community groups. Only then should they add on activities on weekends or summers, because another big mistake arises when students “overstuff their calendars and resumes with no cohesive way of doing things,” says Hyman. Another important point is that academics should always remain any student’s primary concern, and to focus on their own passions rather than comparing themselves to what other peers are doing. Students should also be careful not to pack so many obligations into their lives that they can’t be kids and simply have fun as well. “All a super-stuffed resume shows is you have access, privilege and a ride,” says Hyman. “Colleges aren’t interested in somebody who has a ride. They’re interested in somebody who has character.” Finally, Hyman offers a compassionate piece of advice for students who have difficulty finding the time and energy to do lots of extracurriculars because of difficult family circumstances. “This is really important for students to understand, and especially for those with complicated or financially stressed circumstances: what you do with your time counts,” says Hyman. “Caring for a sick relative or looking out for siblings daily is an extracurricular too, and you can list it and say what it says about you as a person and the values you hold. Those things are equally as important as any sport. That’s as valuable and says as much about you character as playing soccer.” n

ANTI-SOCIAL MEDIA CYBERBULLYING, AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR AND JUST PLAIN RUDENESS ARE ON THE RISE BY SHEILA MENDES COLEMAN
ccording to the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), the majority of schoolage students use some form of social media. In a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, more than half (51 percent) of US teens ages 13 to 17 say they use Facebook, but vastly more teenagers are using YouTube, Instagram or Snapchat. Certainly, social media has its benefits, among them increasing communication speed and shortening the time needed for teachers, administrators and parents to assess a crisis or a threat.
A
16
EDUCATION GUIDE 2019 PASADENA WEEKLY
But there are also a number of potential risks associated with using social media. One is rudeness, with many people — not just teens — opting to not say such things as “thank you,” “please” and “excuse me” at appropriate times. “[Certainly social media has contributed to an attitude of rudeness.] People feel they have to share their opinions on everything, everywhere, at all times, even if backed up by scant knowledge,” author Danny Wallace recently told Psychology Today. “And then they have to broadcast that opinion, importantly, and
in a forthright manner so that they cut through the noise. Rudeness cuts through.” As David Meagher, author of “The A to Z of Modern Manners” recently told ABC News, “You could say people are ruder, but the nature of the technology allows people to communicate with a range of people on a range of topics and it’s really easy to have your two cents worth without having to think about it before you hit send.” Meagher said the proliferation of social media platforms and the increasing amount of time spent on them is starting to influence face to face interactions, ABC reported. “Sometimes those kind of habits that you get into and the way you speak on Twitter or on Facebook or Instagram can kind of creep into your day-to-day life,” he said. “I see it in the workplace all the time.” Social media use can also contribute to psychological trauma and other disturbing social challenges. Potential risks include such things as cyberbullying and other types of conflicts, as well as the risk of students or staff members experiencing direct and widespread public ridicule over otherwise private information being widely dispersed. Such experiences, say researchers, has led to an increase in teen suicides. “It used to be kids could escape bullying when they left school,” said Dr. Robert Pullman, a cyberbullying expert. Cyberbullying can leave a child with no escape. The bullies are at school and on the computer. It can be deadly.” The Pasadena Unified School District has taken steps to address cyberbullying and aggressive Internet behavior with its own policies. “To the extent possible, district schools shall focus on the prevention of bullying by establishing clear rules for student conduct and implementing strategies to promote a positive, collaborative school climate,” states the PUSD policy. “Students shall be informed, through student handbooks and other appropriate means, of district and school rules related to bullying, mechanisms available for reporting incidents or threats, and the consequences for engaging in bullying.” Even without a computer in the home, the problem can be persistent. More than 80 percent of teens use a mobile phone regularly, making it the most common medium for cyber bullying. Other new technologies can also unintentionally aid bad behavior, with some apps and sites hiding videos and text messages and allowing incidents to go unnoticed by parents. “In the Internet Age, the opportunity to bully others has only increased,” writes Sam Cook, a data and Internet security expert. “Prior to the Internet, a physical presence was often needed outside of spreading rumors. Now, bullying can occur immediately, to a much larger audience, and can spread much faster. Additionally, those who choose to bully others can get more immediate gratification from likes, shares, –CONTINUED ON PAGE 18 EDUCATION GUIDE 2019 PASADENA WEEKLY

retweets and the ‘piling on’ effect, which often occurs when others add to an already negative situation.” A recent study by the Pew Research Center, in partnership with the American Life Project, revealed that nine out of 10 teens surveyed said they have witnessed cruel or bullying behavior on social media networks. According to another Internet safety watchdog, DoSomething.org, nearly 43 percent of kids using social media have been bullied online, and 1-in-4 has had it happen more than once. Seventy percent of students reported seeing frequent bullying online, and 81 percent of young people thought bullying online was easier to get away with than bullying in person. Only 1-in-10 victims of such behavior would inform a parent or trusted adult of their abuse. Girls were about twice as likely as boys to be victims and perpetrators of cyber bullying. Social media also poses a risk for triggering crises, as young adults may share information, including candid pictures and feelings with one person that are later shared with a wider group of people, leaving insecure teenagers feeling depressed and alone. In the worst cases, the results can be deadly. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year, according to the American Center for Disease Control and Prevention. For every suicide among young people, there are at least 100 unsuccessful suicide attempts. Researchers at Oxford and Birmingham universities in England found that cyberbullying increased the risk of suicidal behavior by 2.3 times. Professor Ann John of Swansea University Medical School, also in the United Kingdom, said prevention of cyberbullying should be included in school anti-bullying policies, “alongside broader concepts, such as digital citizenship, online peer support for victims, how an electronic bystander might appropriately intervene; and more specific interventions such as how to contact mobile phone companies and Internet service providers to block, educate, or identify users.” Bully victims are up to nine times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims, according to studies by Yale University. In our house, our 10-year-old does not have a Facebook or social media account. Her computer time is monitored and she is encouraged and constantly reminded to go outside and have face to face time with her friends. Parents should monitor the accounts of their children for cyberbullying and be aware of who is in their friend’s list and which sites they are visiting. “Parents and teachers are the best hope in stopping aggressive behavior online,” says Dr. Pullman. “Report it to the school, contact the parents of cyberbullies. The solution has to become an adult issue for the behavior to stop.” n 18
