Sam died at the end of 2020 after battling long-term health issues, leaving behind her husband Bob Fox, with whom she founded the organization in the early ’90s. Approximately 60 family, friends and volunteers gathered on the drizzling rainy day overlooking the mountains of Spur Cross Conservation Area while listening to stories, memories and poems in honor of Sam. played after mourners spoke about Sam for two hours. “Once the rain ended and the sun came out enough to begin to dry the air, Bob released a rehabilitated female redtailed hawk in Sam’s memory,” said Beth Edwards, a longtime Wild at Heart volunteer and coordinator. Rojo, the released hawk, was brought to Wild at Heart on Feb. 21, 2020, with a probable BB gunshot on her right wing. The injury caused swelling and bruising to her wing and she was dehydrated. Eventually after fluid therapy, antibiotics, food and time she was ready to be released back into the wild, according to Edwards. “Bob asked everyone to think of a wish or thought for the hawk to take with her and send up to Sam,” Edwards

Since then, county residents have been receiving an average of almost 28,000 doses of vaccine per day, and most adults 55 years or older, have received at least one dose, according to the Maricopa County Department of Public Health. The state opens vaccine appointments at 11 a.m. each Friday for State Farm Stadium in Glendale. Information about vaccination sites and how to schedule an appointment can be found at azhealth.gov/findvaccine or by calling 1-844-542-8201. Maricopa County provides a map

There is also an email alert available for future pop-up vaccination events facilitated by Maricopa County available on the same web page. “We anticipate more and more vaccine reaching Arizona heading into April, making it possible now to expand prioritization,” Christ said. “We have been flexible and nimble throughout, while expanding the availability of state sites to vaccinate large numbers of people rapidly.” For those living in the Cave Creek, Carefree or Anthem, there are several vaccination providers in the area, including Fry’s, Walgreens, CVS and

Sam was also the first to successfully start a foster program for raptors in Arizona creating a model integral for recovering threatened and endangered species.

Council approves Park West site plan town’s overall character and values. However, Councilmember Thomas McGuire said this development will “probably be something that (neighbors) can tolerate and will benefit the town,” before issuing his vote to approve the site plan narrative. The applicant, Stewart Jean on behalf of Park West Partners, submitted the zone change request and site plan concurrently and presented the case to the council. Park West Partner’s principal John Rehling was also present. “It’s been a lengthy and sometimes difficult project, but I feel we’ve finally worked our way around to something that is suitable for development,” Jean said, preluding his presentation. “We’ve got a plan that I think most of the neighbors can live with and I appreciate all of their time and effort.” He added that the team has received input from a couple of council members who have offered guidance during the

Carefree Highway may soon be home to a new four-building commercial retail center that’s approximately 28,287 square feet. The Cave Creek Town Council unanimously approved the Park West site plan and first reading of the rezoning request during a recent meeting. The multi-tenant retail center may be located on three parcels of land within the Carefree Highway Specific Area Plan (SAP) on the north side of Carefree Highway between 48th and 49th streets. The project will officially be a go so long as the town council approves the second reading of the rezone request at an upcoming meeting. Over a handful of residents took to the meeting to issue concerns about traffic congestion on 48th Street and whether this development is in line with the

year-long process. The developer was also behind the creation of the nearby Sprouts Farmers Market on the corner of East Carefree Highway and North Cave Creek Road. The request asks to change approximately 3.82 acres of land from desert rural to a commercial buffer. The four buildings of the retail development will feature a Sonoran Desert aesthetic with colors that blend naturally with its surrounding environment, according to the site plan narrative. One of the buildings will sit on around 3,000 square feet, and Jean stated the team has been working with a business on establishing an executed lease for a use that is permitted under the commercial buffer zoning codes. The conjoined second and third buildings will occupy a total of 10,000 square feet. Food and retail businesses are slated to be the tenants of buildings, according to the site plan narrative.

However, Jean said “we’re not working with anyone in particular right now to occupy that building.” The final building is significantly larger with approximately 15,300 square feet of retail space, and it has been the subject of negotiations for a “long period of time,” he said. There is a potential tenant who is willing to occupy the building “provided we can get ourselves in the position to build it for them,” Jean said, not elaborating further. Pedestrian pathways will lead people between each building and people can park their cars in a parking area with 146 spaces. There will also be four loading zones for deliveries, he added. Both the site plan as well as the zone change request were approved in a unanimous vote by the town’s planning commission during a meeting in February. Jean held a neighborhood meeting via Zoom on Jan. 28 to present the project to

Golf tourney returns after three years BY SARA CASTRO Foothills Focus Staff Writer

T

he Desert Foothills Library Charity Golf Tournament is returning after three years, on Monday, May 10, to the Desert Forest Golf Club. The nonprofit facility is privately funded through memberships, donations and fundraising events and does not receive tax-based income like most libraries. The library relies on monies from events like the golf tournament. “We’ll have a little bit of everything,” said public services manager Ashley Ware. “We’ll have a four-player scramble for men, women and mixed groups, score keepers, a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle, and of course, breakfast and lunch.” The public is welcome to participate in the event. There are 144 openings this year and tickets cost $250 per play-

nearby residents and business owners and answer their questions. Thirteen residents joined in for the hour-long meeting and some asked questions about things like the height of the buildings as well as the associated drainage plans. Jean answered their questions and assured those who were participating that everything will be in compliance with the town’s ordinances. Some also mentioned concerns about traffic during the neighborhood meeting, and a traffic study was conducted subsequently. He explained, however, that the study was conducted during the “height” of the pandemic when there was minimal traffic. Instead, numbers were used from the traffic study completed for the Sprouts Farmers Market development, which had “pretty strong traffic counts,” he said. Jean added he was pleased the traffic report OK’d the adjusted site plan. Jean explained the site plan originally indicated the development would have four egress points. However, based on

er, $200 of which is tax deductible. This year’s golf tournament is also offering a new opportunity for people not interested in playing but still want to show support. Nongolfers can register as scorekeepers for any foursome of their choice for $50. This event also provides sponsorship opportunities. One of the major sponsors this year is Frank Tyrol Insurance. “We are hoping to get back to our community and help them in any way that we can,” Ware said. “The fundraiser means a lot more this year because of the pandemic” The pandemic forced the library to restrict programs for all age groups and is only open by appointment. “Everything benefits Desert Foothills Library, as a nonprofit public library we don’t receive tax from our community, everything is done through donations and contributions from people in the commuthe ongoing conversations with neighbors, the amount of egress points was reduced to three and the site was refigured to a “plan that we think will work for everyone.” He added he’s spoken to Mayor Ernie Bunch about making improvements to 48th Street. However, many resident’s public comments said the modifications don’t suffice. The development’s lighting, water and landscape elements are fully in compliance with the town’s ordinances, Jean mentioned. He added the landscape plan goes beyond what is required. Councilmember Paul Diefenderfer stated before voting in favor of the site plan that he’s not necessarily “happy” about the development, he’s “happy about the high, dense vegetation” planned for the northwest corner of the project. Bunch offered a short statement before voting in favor, saying that the highway is a high traffic area, and “business is always about location.” —Staff writer Sarah Donahue can be reached at sdonahue@timespublications.com

In 2020, over 110,000 people visited the library, which provides internet and Wi-Fi ser-

AROUND THE BLUHMIN’ TOWN

Does the cancel culture stink? BY JUDY BLUHM Foothills Focus Columnist

S

orry, Pepe Le Pew, you are canceled! The devilish little skunk, who has been romantically chasing after Penelope Pussycat for way too long, cannot seem to take “No” for an answer. So, Looney Tunes, which created him in the 1950s, has had enough of those womanizing ways! No more cartoon reruns of the relentless pursuits. We are a modern society and will not put up with these displays of inappropriate behavior. I am not sure that Pepe was ever a role model, but men (and boys), please do not follow the Le Pew plan of courtship because it will not end well! Our culture is moving into a “cancel” mode at alarming speed. Philosophers and historians claim this is nothing new, societies continually evolve, change their collective attitudes and constantly redefine what is acceptable and what is considered “wrong.” Yes, we can see that the “norms” of behavior in our society 50 years ago are no longer appropriate. We have changed — and mostly for the better. We don’t want to label people in oppressive terms. We want freedom, respect and dignity to be the standard for each of us to enjoy. But how does an advanced society decide what needs to be “tweaked” to uphold our core values, and what (or who) needs to be canceled? We are on that slippery slope. Can a society keep pieces of the past without offending our current sensibilities? Disney+ has blocked some of its old, classic animated movies, such as “Dumbo” and “Peter Pan,” because of “negative depictions or mistreatment of people or cultures.” Companies are deciding what content is “appropriate” for their audiences. There

are movies and books that might not stand the test of time. Warning messages placed on “Gone with the Wind,” and the movies “Tootsie” and “Mrs. Doubtfire” might soon be edited. Movies, books, cartoons all have the potential to be erased or altered. Dr. Seuss has not been canceled, but some of the earlier books written by Dr. Theodore Seuss Geisel have been shelved. Not by our government, but by Dr. Seuss Enterprises, a private company that owns the titles and felt that six of his early books had “racist and insensitive imagery.” This is a company making a decision about its brand, which is its right. We

are experiencing the “sea change” of attitudes about what media content people in 2021 find appropriate. The teenager who uses a racial slur might never get the promotion or dream job many years into the future, because social media posts last forever. And even if someone has shown true evidence of remorse, change in behavior, apologizes and makes amends, it simply might not be enough. We are in a new frontier of having visual and audio evidence of our younger selves. A pretty terrifying thought. So as a society, the question to ponder is, when does forgiveness come into play? And what about grace?

Do we still have a pathway to redemption? Are second chances still possible? I think so, except for Pepe Le Pew. His chances for redemption stink. Judy Bluhm is a writer and a local Realtor. Have a question or a comment? Email Judy at judy@judybluhm.com.

Anti-vaxxers long on myths, short on logic BY DAVID LEIBOWITZ Foothills Focus Columnist

effects besides the sore arm I had for 48 hours and a decreased tolerance for people who say things like, “Didja know the COVID-19 vaccine killed Hank Aaron?” Again, this is seriously a contention being made by the anti-vaxxers. Their logic? Aaron got his COVID-19 vaccine Jan. 5. The baseball slugger died 17 days later in his sleep, at age 86. The medical examiner ruled this a death from natural causes, reporting that Aaron showed no symptoms of COVID-19, nor any side effects from the Moderna vaccine he received. Still, leading anti-vaxxer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. tweeted, “Aaron’s tragic death is part of a wave of suspicious deaths among elderly closely following administration of COVID vaccines.” The rumor mill ran so amok, the New York Times fact-checked Aaron’s demise under a headline reading, “Hank Aaron’s death had nothing to do with the COVID-19 vaccine.”

W

hen news broke in February that Arizona would open COVID-19 vaccines to people over age 55, I had a long debate with myself about whether to get the shot. By long, I mean 3 solid minutes. Or the time it took me to Google, “Will the COVID vaccine implant a microchip in me?” Seriously, that’s one of the myths circulating about the vaccine, along with rumors that the vaccines will genetically modify your DNA or that the shot is actually more lethal than COVID-19 itself. All false, at least according to everyone from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to the Mayo Clinic to the American Medical Association to yours truly. I got a second dose of the Pfizer vaccine on March 25. So far, I’ve shown no ill

For some folks, the world medical establishment and the mainstream media uniting to assure us of something can only mean one thing — the exact opposite of whatever we’re being told. If the American Hospital Association, American Medical Association and American Nurses Association all say a vaccine is safe — and they’ve released a public service announcement saying exactly that — the only logical thing to believe is a YouTube video by some loon named Steve Fletcher who reports, “4 Reasons Why The COVID Vaccine IS The Mark Of The Beast!” Steve says it’s right there in Revelations 13. “The Beast and the False Prophet and the Dragon will deceive humanity into taking His mark,” i.e., the COVID-19 vaccine. To think, my big worry was that the second shot might interfere with my Saturday morning tee time. A mid-March poll of Arizonans by OH Predictive Insights shows that 17% of us will refuse to take the vaccine, while an-

other 11% remain unsure. That could create an issue for our state, given that medical experts like Dr. Anthony Fauci estimate that herd immunity from COVID-19 will require “75% to 80%-plus” of the herd to be vaccinated. This member of the herd feels tip top after getting two shots in the arm. Not only has my 5G cellphone reception improved at home — four bars! — but before dawn, I can mentally tune in AM radio stations from as far away as St. Louis. On the downside, I didn’t get the AstraZeneca vaccine, which relies on a modified chimpanzee adenovirus to induce COVID-19 immunity. According to some Internet memes, this means the vaccine will turn you into a monkey — something I’ve hoped for since seeing “Planet of the Apes” when I was 9. My favorite ape has always been Dr. Zaius, played by the great British stage actor Maurice Evans. Zaius was the ape who nailed it when he said of man, “From the evidence, I believe his wisdom must walk hand and hand with his idiocy.”

Dough Riders rises out of pandemic impact BY FOOTHILLS FOCUS STAFF

hen COVID-19 hit the nation hard in March 2020, abruptly shutting down business and entire industries, Arin Finger was forced to pause his i9 Sports franchise for the foreseeable future. Rather than sitting idly by in the midst of shutdowns, Finger quickly developed a new business: Dough Riders, a mobile wood-fired pizza company serving fresh-to-order pies. “With no idea how long the closures would last and refund requests pouring in, I had to do something to support my family and my key employees,” said Finger, who has successfully run his i9 Sports league for more than seven years. He was expecting his biggest spring season yet, with over 2,500 youth signed up. “Dough Riders is a solution to a need that developed out of COVID-19 — providing families with wholesome food without leaving home — and we’re proud that we can do something during these times that reconnects neighborhoods and communities.” Adept at running his own business, Finger approached, his lead soccer instructor with i9 Sports, about the mobile eatery. Stetler has culinary experience making fresh dough from his Italian family’s pizzeria background. With Stetler and Finger having New York heritage, building a menu featuring creative New York-style pizzas came easy. With that, Finger officially fired up Dough Riders

New target-shooting opportunity awaits BY FOOTHILLS FOCUS STAFF

T

he distinctive sound of a bullet hitting steel soon will be heard on the newly named Frank DeSomma Memorial Range at the world-class Ben Avery Shooting Facility. The Arizona Game and Fish Department, in partnership with Phoenix-based Patriot Ordnance Factory, now provides an opportunity for recreational shooters to take aim at reactive steel targets set at 200, 300, 400 and 500 meters. The range, named after the late Frank DeSomma, founder of POFUSA, will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (no start times after 1:30 p.m.) Wednesday to Sunday, depending on range availability. Customers can only reserve shooting times at https://bookben.azgfd.com/. Reservations are time certain. To

ensure all customers have the same opportunity, arriving early or late will not change a person’s reservation start or end time. A reservation block is scheduled for one hour, and customers will be prompted when the end time is approaching to ensure they have time to pack up their equipment and depart. The reactive steel targets vary in size, depending on distance. The targets set at 200 and 300 meters range from 4 to 20 inches, while the targets set at 400 and 500 meters range from 6 to 24 inches. Armor-piercing steel core/steel jacket, solid copper and other hardened bullets are strictly prohibited. Ammunition may be inspected to ensure safety guidelines are being followed. An inspection may be conducted, at the customer’s request, to determine if a particular type of ammunition is permitted.

As a reminder, all firearms must be cased before entering the range. All customers are responsible for picking up their spent casings. Customers can purchase eye and hearing protection when making a reservation.

What’s in your diary? CHURCH COMMUNITY CONNECTION

Pastor Ed Delph Foothills Focus Columnist

H

ere’s a great illustration I found on the internet of two different perspectives — one coming from Venus (a feminine perspective) and the other from Mars (a masculine perspective). One is called The Wife’s Diary. The other is called The Husband’s Diary. The Wife’s Diary. “Tonight, I thought my husband was acting weird. We had made plans to meet at a nice restaurant for dinner. I was shopping with my friends all day

long, so I thought he was upset that I was a bit late, but he made no comment on it. The conversation wasn’t flowing, so I suggested that we go somewhere quiet so we could talk. He agreed, but he didn’t say much. “I asked him what was wrong; He said, ‘Nothing.’ I asked him if it was my fault that he was upset. He said he wasn’t upset, that it had nothing to do with me, and not to worry about it. On the way home, I told him that I loved him. He smiled slightly and kept driving. I can’t explain his behavior. I don’t know why he didn’t say, I love you, too. “When we got home, I felt as if

I had lost him completely, as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore. He just sat there quietly and watched television. He continued to seem distant and absent. Finally, with silence all around us, I decided to go to bed. About 15 minutes later, he came to bed. But I still felt that he was distracted, and his thoughts were somewhere else. He fell asleep; I cried. I don’t know what to do. I’m almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else. My life is a disaster.” The Husband’s Diary. “A 2-foot putt. Who misses a 2-foot putt?” Five years ago, my wife Becky and

I had a similar diary story when we were selling our home and looking for a new home at the same time. Here’s what she posted on her Facebook page. “Well, as of last night, we have a contract on our house. We haven’t found a house to move to yet, so I’m in bed with my mind racing, thinking, ‘OK, our daughter and her husband said we could stay with them, but we could stay with Ed’s father, but Ed needs internet for his work. Where are we going to put all the stuff we have to pack?’ So, I couldn’t fall asleep. I got up, did some stuff, and finally fell asleep sometime after 2 a.m. “Today Ed and I were sitting in the family room, and Ed was strangely quiet, so I assumed he was thinking about the upcoming move. I said, ‘Whatcha thinkin?’ Ed says, ‘I can’t believe Jeff Gordon blew winning that NASCAR race yesterday!’ I replied, ‘Oh my gosh, you are such a guy!’” Becky had 37 likes and 20 comments on her Facebook in an hour (mostly women). The lesson here is

don’t get all steamed up when you don’t know what’s cooking. To be fair to Becky, she has a straightforward thought about the Venus and Mars idea. “Hmmm, women are from Venus, and men are from Mars. No, you’re both from Earth. Deal with it.” That’s my Becky. This phenomenon also happens with God and us human beings. But it’s not about Venus and Mars issues. It’s with heaven and earth issues. Here’s another diary example of us humans and our conversations with ourselves and God. I’ll call it Our Diary and God’s Dairy. Our Diary. “Dear God, our world’s falling apart, things are terrible, everything is out of control, I can’t cope, there’s no hope, things will never change, we can’t recover from this, it’s the end of the world.” Wouldn’t you agree that we all have had diaries like this in times of crisis and ambiguity? God’s Diary. “Dear Person: Yes, I understand the way you feel. I am God! I will be handling all of your problems today. I will not need your help. Have a good day.” Wow, God is such a guy! Do you know what? It may seem like things are out of control, but God is in control. Here’s another diary I gleaned from Pastor Andy Stanley illustrating just that. “Sometimes, I just want it to stop — the talk of COVID, looting, brutality. I lose my way. I become convinced that this ‘new normal’ is real

life. Then I meet an 87-year-old who talks of living through polio, diphtheria, Vietnam protests, and yet is still enchanted with his life. He seemed surprised when I said that 2020 must be incredibly challenging for him. “No,” he said slowly, looking me straight in the eyes. “I learned a long time ago not to see the world through the headlines. I see the world through the people that surround me. I see the world with the realization that we love big. Therefore, I choose to write my own headlines: ‘Husband loves wife today.’ ‘Family drops everything to come to Grandma’s bedside.’ He patted my hand. ‘Old man makes a new friend.’ “His words collide with my worries, freeing them from the tether I had been holding tight. They float away. I’m left with a renewed spirit and a new way to write my own headlines.” What’s in your diary today? Who’s in your headlines today? ‘One Yellow Brick’ is paved with advice BY SRIANTHI PERERA Foothills Focus Contributing Writer

S

ome 20 years ago when she began as a marketing executive, Melissa Swader believed she could achieve anything she set her mind to. Now, as a nationally respected marketing influencer, she is poised to help others on the same path. Swader’s debut book, “One Yellow Brick: Wizardly tips to empower building your empire,” distills her decades of experience as an entrepreneur. “I started at a very young age and I went through a lot of these trials and tribulations — cliché as it sounds — as a woman in business trying to get her foot in the door and facing those challenges in a really competitive market,” she recalled. “I thought this is the perfect time for me to release a book. Because, after 20 years of being a woman entrepreneur, I know that there are so many students,

young entrepreneurs like me, who’re probably going through the same thing.” She comes across many during her mentoring in the entrepreneur program at ASU’s W.P. Carey School of Business. She also meets them during her work in marketing and public relations for her company, Ruby Red Media. “I was really excited to get the book out because I know there are business industry professionals out there that are struggling, and so it felt so liberating,” she said. “It was so wonderful.” Despite its fairytale imagery from the classic story set in Kansas, “One Yellow Brick” isn’t fanciful. Swader gives away plenty of concrete instructions on marketing strategies and guidelines to succeed as well as on how to build confidence and believe in yourself. “‘One Yellow Brick’ is about all your ‘one yellow bricks’ that you have to get through, that you have to take along your journey,” she said. “There are a lot of un-

expected things that happen in your life, that pull you away. It’s all these ‘one yellow bricks’ that really build your empire. “You just have to do it one yellow brick at a time,” she added. “So, it’s very telling.” The book’s ideal reader, according to the author, is “anyone who’s looking for the marketing strategies necessary to reach their business goals, a student or young entrepreneur or anyone looking to build their business.” Even though the pandemic robbed it of a formal presentation to a gathering, the book is selling well. That’s because Swader wears many hats, and each one helps her promote it. Swader works as a writer in the commercial real estate industry and knows many of its major players and the associated national media. The book contains relevant conversations to commercial real estate because of her long association in the industry. Hence, she counts on a “huge support system.”

“I owe a lot of gratitude to the commercial real estate industry for that kind of media support and really pushing out my book as a writer, as a marketing media personality in general,” she said. The Phoenix native has an international following. She maintains a dozen social media pages on various platforms, presents podcasts and programs via Zoom, publishes blogs, posts images, and constantly promotes her book. This has helped create a buzz since the soft launch in October and it’s still trending. Swader said she feels honored to be named “2020 Influencers in Marketing” by the GlobeSt./Real Estate Forum Magazine in New York City. How does one become a social media influencer? “I talk a lot,” she replied. “People are being influenced to try something when I say it.”

Social media is her main platform., as it is “such a universal tool of communication, so I capitalize on having my confidence level where I believe in what I’m saying. When you do things with conviction, people believe you,” she said. On Mondays, she publishes a blog, #Marketing with Melissa, which is a two-minute video clip at a business location in the Valley, where she talks about marketing the business and offers tips. “They are valuable, useful to them; people listen, they utilize it,” she said. Soon, she will also open an Amazon Influencer Store called “Fabulous Finds Online” that will feature items that will bring value to a home or business. Swader said she built her brand by staying true to who she is as a professional. “I’ve built my individual brand by being honest, bringing valuable new information and bringing valuable tips and marketing strategies to help people grow their business,” she said. “That’s how everyone knows me in business.” In the book, she stresses the importance

of community support and for people to be advocates for each other to help people stay positive during the inevitable difficulties that arise. Referring to her own community of the North Valley, she said: “We can come together as a community, or as a professional, unified organization if

we start really putting together ideas and thoughts. We really can make a difference and that could be on a personal level or on a community level.” Swader also emphasizes the importance of women supporting women and men supporting women in business. One forum that she created on Facebook called “Women in Commercial Real Estate” has more than 400 members, some of whom are top names in the industry around the world. “They are asking questions and supporting each other and trying to find buyers, trying to sell. They’re doing it as this cohesive group of women trying to help each other and supporting each other on a day-to-day basis,” she said. “I love that. That epitomizes why I’m in marketing and why I love business.” Melissa Swader’s “One Yellow Brick

Better read this if you are 62 or older and still making mortgage payments. More than 1 million seniors have taken advantage of this “retirement secret.” It’s a well-known fact that for many older Americans, the home is their single biggest asset, often accounting for more than 45% of their total net worth. And with interest rates near alltime lows while home values are still high, this combination creates the perfect dynamic for getting the most out of your built-up equity. Not only are people living longer than ever before, but there is also greater uncertainty in the ecomony. With home prices back up again, ignoring this “hidden wealth” may prove to be short sighted when looking for the best long-term outcome. All things considered, it’s not surprising that more than a million homeowners have already used a government-insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) loan to turn their home equity into extra cash for retirement. It’s a fact: no monthly mortgage payments are required with a government-insured HECM loan; however the borrowers are still responsible for paying for the maintenance of their home, property taxes, homeowner’s insurance and, if required, their

In fact, one key advantage of a HECM is that the proceeds will first be used to pay off any existing liens on the property, which frees up cash flow, a huge blessing for seniors living on a fixed income. Unfortunately, many senior homeowners who might be better off with a HECM loan don’t even bother to get more information because of rumors they’ve heard. f you are anything like me, as soon as the clock strikes April, I begin thinking about the poem, “April showers bring May flowers!” While we do not get much rain Arizona during the spring, the cooler temperatures sure have been nice. In the store, we are busy getting ready

to stock all the lovely spring flowers that start blooming in April and May. One of the hallmarks of spring flowers is the daffodil. Daffodils come in a variety of colors besides their famous yellow petals. They also come in white, cream, peach and even pink. Daffodils can be traced back to the early 17th century in the United Kingdom. However, it was not until the later 19th century when they began being farmed for the cut flower industry. Initially, flower girls sold the wild

blooms on the side of the road, until a potato farmer came along and realized he could farm them much like his potatoes. That is when he began growing and selling them in bulk using the weekly freighter to send the blooms from Penzance to London on a weekly basis. We are certainly grateful for this farmer as we will enjoy the daffodil season in the next couple of weeks. I have a lot of favorite flowers, but one of my top three is definitely the tulip! Tulips come in a wide variety of colors and types. The parrot tulip is a great variety that we carry in the store. The parrot tulip has petals that resemble feathers and come in beautiful bold colors. While tulips are often associated with Holland,

they actually originated in China. They were introduced into Western society in the 16th century and even led to the first recorded economic bubble burst with a little known event, called “tulip mania.” Tulips became such a hot commodity that their price rose to over 10 times the annual salary of an average artist around 1637. They were so sought after that farmers had their planted bulbs stolen right out of their farms. What a wild history our sweet tulips have. Did you also know that tulips continue to grow while they are in water? I have customers come in often with their vase of tulips that have slumped over asking me for help. The stems of the tulips continue to grow in water and often cause them to slink over the vase. All they need is a stem cut and they are back

After high school, Black was off to George Washington University and the Corcoran School of Art. She earned advanced degrees in art therapy and art education. Her artistic heroes were van Gogh, Schiele, Diebenkorn, Matisse and Gauguin. Black was fascinated by art therapy and the psychology behind expressing emotions and telling the stories of our “hidden selves” through art. This grew into a 40-year adventure in the exploration of color and form. “My expansion is here and now in the form of larger works,” she said. “I search for mysterious subject matter to lead the viewer into the painting. I also introduce figures in my work that are not quite realistic think in terms of abstract expressionism.” All of this is part of Black’s fascination with psychology, the subconscious of the human experience. She thinks in terms of “looking for my wild child and giving her the gift of calm.” Black is also part of the “study pro-

She frequently shows her work in venues such as Thunderbird Artists and Hidden in the Hill, sponsored by the Sonoran Arts League. Her work was the cover art for Vortex magazine, and she received a National Endowment of the Arts grant this past summer at Yeiser Gallery in Paducah, Kentucky. in business! I’ll admit, there is nothing more beautiful that a big, beautiful peony in full bloom. Peonies are requested nearly everyday (even during the cold winter!) in our store. If peonies were a floral currency, they would be the rare coin that you find in your great grandmother’s coin purse. They only bloom from April to June and the full blooms have an even shorter season for the cut flower industry. The peony dates back to 1000 BC in China and did not make its way out west until the late 1700s. During that time, the peony was used primarily for medicine, helping to treat headaches and asthma. To this day, lightly sweetened peony petals are served as a

dessert in China. Peonies come in nearly every color, except for blue. Watching the peony fully bloom in the spring and open from a tight ball into a fluffy, colorful flower is truly a gift. It is evident I could talk about flowers for days and days. I love spring and the flowers they bring with them. Not only do we make beautiful bouquets with the fresh-cut blooms, but we also get to learn more about the different varieties and how they are cultivated. There is nothing more cheerful that have a simple vase of fresh cut blooms in your home to wash away the April showers. Natalie Gilliland owns Poppies Flower Shop at Norterra, 2450 W.
