By Patrick Burkhart Mesa Community College The landscape of education at all levels, but particularly within higher education, is evolving at light speed; MCC is no exception. New methods of educational delivery, new paradigms of accountability and higher expectations from student consumers and employers are driving innovation, reform and shifts in the marketplace. We continue to work smarter because of fewer resources allocated by the state and lower property tax revenues. These challenges, and others, have brought new thinking and new initiatives. The creativity, ingenuity, and state-of-the-art instruction have and will continue to result in innovative approaches that improve student success. Research and our own experience show the more involved students are in their campus community, the more exciting, memorable and rewarding

n an article in Smart Money magazine, author Glenn Ruffenach made the point that the advisor who got you to retirement, is very often not the specialist you’ll need to get you through retirement.
When we were in our thirties, forties, and fifties, an advisor’s mission was to get us to our target retirement date by growing our retirement savings subject to risk, primarily in the stock market. When the market grew, we benefitted fully from that advance. When the market retreated, we were long-term investors with a 20+ year time horizon, who should remain invested “for the long term, because most attempts at timing the market are unsuccessful.” It was understood that our time in was more important than our timing. During these decades, we also remained active contributors to our accounts at work, and those 401(k)s and SEP-IRAs benefitted from continual feeding and ongoing investment. Any non-qualified (non-IRA) investment accounts we had also benefitted by the reinvestment (rather than the taking) of dividends, as the market history charts on the walls of our stock broker’s office assumed. If you’ve arrived at your sixties with financial scar tissue still visible all over your disfigured retirement accounts, you’re not alone. The last fourteen years have devastated many investors, even as they poured precious assets into the sieve that was Wall Street from 20002013 during which the S&P 500 gained 25.9%, or 1.85% per year. You understand that now is the time to emphasize preserving—more than or at least as much as growing—your accounts,
for you and your spouse, as well as any legacy you hope to leave your children. As such, you now believe that the majority of your holdings should be in safe, guaranteed instruments, with a minority share remaining in a conservatively managed and well-diversified equities account. But herein lies the rub: The advisor who handles this now-smaller piece often doesn’t have the training, perspective, or skill set and expertise to also handle the larger, safety-focused piece. As a revealing study in Financial Planning magazine recently showed, most risk-based advisors are woefully out of touch with the primary goals of their retired clients: When clients were asked what their top concern was, 86.6% said “losing their wealth.” When their advisors were asked the same question, only 15.4% believed “losing their wealth” was the most important issue to those clients. The investment charts used by these advisors still assume reinvested dividends—even though you and most of your friends have begun enjoying that dividend income in retirement—rendering those charts misrepresentative of your market experience and goals. (Incidentally, those charts also don’t include fees, expenses, taxes or inflation.) Their timeworn clichés still roll off their lips like compliance disclaimers (“past history is no guarantee of future performance”), even as you and your spouse yearn for non-legalese, plain-spoken, common-sense candor in plain English, and the approach and product recommendations that should accompany it. He/she “can’t guarantee” at precisely the stage in life where you want guarantees—guarantees against market
losses, accompanied by tax advantages, leverage for heirs, and reasonable rates of return. You don’t care if you never hit another home run again—and you’d be happy hitting singles, doubles and the occasional triple—but you simply can’t afford to lose the game swinging for the fences any more. In the same way that many of us have a dentist and an orthodontist, a tax preparer and an estate planning attorney, a primary care physician and a specialist (oncologist, cardiologist, etc.) based on past treatment history—so too should we have two financial advisors: a growth money manager whose specialties are risk-based, and a safe-money advisor who specializes in guarantees, income-planning, wealth transfer, long-term care planning, and reasonable rates of return on your money. And this brings me to my final point, and it’s an important one: If either of these two advisors are unwilling to work together on your behalf (like doctors sharing treatment regimens out of professional courtesy), you should consider finding a replacement for that person. Specialties should be respected, not disparaged, especially when one is dealing with monies that it’s taken one’s client 40 years to save. After all, it’s not their money, it’s yours.

There’s More Than ‘Talking With The Animals’ At Zoo Camp 2014 By Tracy House Feed a tortoise, bathe an elephant, hang out with a rhino and yes, talk with the animals. Camp Zoo at the Phoenix Zoo is making plans for summer camp 2014. This animal-filled adventure runs June 2 through July 25 for kids in kindergarten through eighth grade. Camps are weeklong sessions and offered as full and half-day camps. Dean Watanabe, family program supervisor at the Phoenix Zoo, said, “In a typical day of camp, we start at 8 a.m., kids check in and get situated into their groups and from there we are off and running.” Campers are separated into ageappropriate groups, kindergarten through eighth grade. Each age group has an animal-based curriculum that includes interaction with the animals, crafts and experiential learning.
“The kids all have an airconditioned home base,” he said. “That’s very important. We have new facilities here at the Phoenix Zoo. Usually we’ll start out with some kind of opening circle and then from there we’ll explore the zoo, we’ll have animals visit them in their classroom, all of their activities have to do with the daily and weekly theme.” Camp Zoo offers eight sessions with bi-weekly themes of alternating curriculum ranging from Storybook Safaris to Who Works at the Zoo? In addition to the themes, Watanabe said there is a lot of behind-the-scenes action the campers will be involved in. “A lot of cleaning and feeding, opportunities to do stuff that the general public never gets to do.” As hot as it is to be outside in the summer heat here in the Valley,
Watanabe said the camp does take precautions for the campers. “All of the kids get a water bottle and a hat as part of what we issue them for camp. And we’re constantly drinking and filling that up. We incorporate water play into their day at the zoo.” Campers cool off at one of the two water pads and most of the hikes and Campers at Camp Zoo make a few “new” friends outdoor explorations take place and experience the amazing interactions and experiential learning at the Phoenix Zoo in its in the mornings to avoid the unique and fascinating summer camps offered June 2 through July 25. higher temperatures. Progression, Practice, Precautions Keep Cheerleaders Safe By Tracy House They kick, tumble and flip... Cheerleaders wow the crowds with their amazing feats of acrobatics and high-flying stunts, but before they can even begin to put all those crowd pleasing tricks into play, they first need to know the fundamentals and safety precautions of cheerleading. March is National Cheer Safety Awareness month and for any parent who has a child involved in cheerleading, or is thinking of getting him or her started, there are basic rules and guidelines that cheerleading coaches take seriously to maintain the most safe environment. Dalia Garcia, four-year head cheer coach at Red Mountain High School, has been coaching cheer for 10 years. Garcia said she emphasizes the safety
precautions with her cheerleaders. “We always go through the safety precautions,” Garcia said. “Over the summer we always have a summer camp, and during summer camp is where they learn the basics of what is my position, especially with stunting, because that’s where the main safety issue is, to make sure whatever girl we’re throwing up in the air is going to get caught or if something goes wrong with a stunt what they’re going to do.” Garcia explained every girl is responsible for doing something specific during a stunt to ensure that a flier—the girl tossed up in the air— does not fall to the ground. “They don’t move on to a skill until they’ve mastered the most basic skill that will help them advance to the
Brought to you by: next stunt available,” Garcia said. As parents start to look for introductory cheer programs, Garcia mentioned cheerleaders need to have upper body strength and tumbling experience, especially as cheer becomes more competitive. At the varsity level, cheerleading includes the basic skills and building on those skills, before moving on to more sophisticated stunts. To make sure cheerleaders are fit, they should participate in weight training, push-ups, stretching and running, Garcia said. Safety is the No. 1 priority in cheerleading, said Garcia. She explained that she sees more injuries when cheerleaders don’t understand the fundamentals and are not yet “on

the same page.” Parents just getting involved in cheerleading should know that it takes commitment, particularly at the high school level. “Cheer takes a lot of time during school,” Garcia said. “Before school, during school and after school... The biggest thing I say is all practices are mandatory. If we’re missing two girls at almost every practice we can’t do everything full out. So time commitment is a huge deal.” Cheerleaders, according to www. cheersafe.org, have one of the lowest incidents of injuries in comparison to other sports such as girls’ basketball, soccer and softball and major injuries of cheerleaders have been drastically reduced. ... continues on page 17

Are you tired of taking expensive over-the-counter sleeping medications that just don’t seem to work, or leave you feeling groggy? Getting restful sleep can be a challenge, but you don’t need to spend big bucks that bust your budget to catch some Zzzs. Create some white noise. Create some calm and consistent background noise. It may be just the thing you need to relax. Turn on a small fan to create not only some fresh air circulation but a nice soft hum. Download free meditation music. Amazon.com often offers free songs or 99-cent album downloads. Look for some meditation music that you can get for free or cheap. Then at the end of the day, just push play and relax. photo page

Behold the power of herbs. Keep an herbal sachet near your pillow. Lavender and vanilla are known to induce sleep and relaxation. Use fresh herbs and just place in a muslin bag or fabric sachet, then place under your pillow where you can enjoy the aromatic properties. Power down. Unplug and power down all distractions such as telephones and televisions. There is no quicker way to interrupt your drifting than an electronic device flashing and making noise.

Enjoy a warm, noncaffeinated drink. Treat yourself to a tea cup of warm water steeped with lemon or fresh herbs, or a little warm milk with a sprinkle of cinnamon. Think of this as a treat. Sit in bed with your cup and saucer, drink slowly and imagine your body unwinding with each sip. Take care of your linens. Treat your bedding well. Wash it once a week with a gentle detergent that won’t irritate your skin. Use a natural fabric softener or fresh herbs to add a light fragrance. Shake your bedding out daily before making your bed up, smooth your blankets out and fluff your pillows. This only takes a few minutes, and at the end of the day you will feel like you are falling into a fancy bed in a fivestar resort.

navigating parenthood By Eva Dwight, B.A. MaEd. mom section
Hurtful Words...and Healing Words “I hate you!” Whoever said, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me,” didn’t have children. ‘Cause, man, that “h” Eva Dwight word drives a knife right through your heart. You feed them, you clothe them, you play with them, you snuggle them when they’re sad and clean up the vomit when they’re sick, and then it seems like you make one wrong move, have one tough afternoon, and the “h” word comes flying out at you. You’re tired and discouraged and you just want to stomp your feet and scream, “Oh yeah? Well, I hate you, too!” Because maybe you do, just a little bit, just for that moment. But wait. mouth, as they say in aerobics class. Check in on your own feelings. They’re the compass that will guide you to a clearer understanding of your child. If you’re feeling hurt, disappointed, disbelieving, or disgusted, chances are your child is thinking, “I don’t feel liked/loved. You hurt my feelings so I’ll hurt yours, too.” He may or may not be conscious of thinking those exact thoughts, and it’s entirely possible that you are doing all the things you’re supposed to do as a parent with no intention of hurting your child’s feelings. But feelings are hurt nonetheless, and your child has a strong need to express how angry he is. Keep breathing. How can you handle this situation with kindness and firmness, in a way that maintains mutual dignity and respect for you and your child?
First, recognize that feelings aren’t good or bad. They just are. How we handle those feelings is what’s important, and right now, modeling for your child how to handle hurt feelings can reduce her need to use the “h” word in the future. • Expand your child’s “feeling words” vocabulary and self-care skills. Name the feeling that you’re hearing and help her talk about it: “I think you might be feeling frustrated/ angry/anxious/exasperated because XYZ happened. What could you do to help yourself feel better?” • Teach him to release those emotions through physical activity, problemsolving discussion, listening to music, drawing or writing. • Rather than trying to change her mind about how she feels, simply use reflective listening and then name the feeling: “I can hear how frustrated you are.” • Do the unexpected. Give him a hug. Or simply say, “I’m sorry to hear you hate me, because I love you desperately.”
• Give both of you a time-out and then problem-solve when you’re calmer. Sometimes, our children are unclear about why they’re upset. They just are. They feel insecure and their worst nightmare is that we might return those yucky feelings. They need reassurance, to know we’re there and we love them. No matter what. If we can give them that reassurance and help them learn to express their emotions appropriately, we can turn hurtful moments into teachable ones. So neither bones—nor hearts—get broken. As a coach, Garcia said she knows what her girls are doing before they perform a stunt. “Every single girl knows what their responsibility is.” She stressed that every girl on the team has a job and knows what that job is. Garcia does not move forward with stunts or other acrobatics until the team can move on together. “When the girls are up in the air it’s serious time. Nobody’s laughing, nobody’s talking. Only the coach is talking,” Garcia said. “Those are little things when anything can happen…If I hear any type of laughing or talking when they’re not supposed to, that’s it. It’s serious.” Tumbling is a basic component of cheerleading. “Prior to throwing any type of trick, no matter how advanced you are, everybody starts with the same warm up, the basic warm up… that way they’re stretching every part of their body and then once they’re warmed up… the girls work through
the process elevating to the advanced position.” Progressing, practice and always taking safety precautions before moving on to any level of complexity are key to keeping cheerleaders safe. “Even with stunts, we all start off at the lowest level and we do not move on until every girl on the team is on the right count,” Garcia said. “We don’t move on to full extensions or lifts or baskets, until we have progressed from the basic stunts.” Garcia doesn’t move on to the next skill set until all the girls on the team have showed her the same skill. “If every teammate has not moved on, then we’re not moving on as a team. We either move on as a whole, or we don’t at all. That way nobody is left behind.”

Behind the Scenes at Mesa Public Schools By Laurie Struna, Mesa Public Schools Mesa Public Schools is nationally recognized for excellence in teaching and for student achievement in academics, sports, creative and performing arts, and career and technical programs. But did you know a variety of support services contribute to ensuring a safe and healthy learning environment for all students? Have you ever wondered who keeps the buses running on schedule, the carpets clean and the technology operating? Here is a behind-the- scenes look at a few departments that add to the success of Mesa Public Schools. Make Meals Count Well-nourished children have improved concentration, elevated test scores, better school attendance and fewer behavioral issues. The central warehouse for food and nutrition drives 820 miles per day to provide students at 76 campuses with a wide assortment of foods that are appealing and nutritious. Daily, students consume 15,500 breakfast quesadillas, 956 gallons of milk, 2,250 pounds of apple slices and a whopping 33,300 slices of whole-wheat pizzeria-style pizza! A Welcoming Environment When students and teachers are healthy and comfortable, the class can maintain focus on teaching and learning. The 389-member custodial department works tirelessly to ensure schools are sparkling every day, by providing important services, from cleaning carpets and disposing properly of waste from the health office, to scrubbing and recoating gymnasium floors. In addition, crews spend three to five days per week dislodging gum from concrete using high-pressure machines to blast focused streams of heated water to remove the residue. The Future is Green Mesa Public Schools bus drivers safely transport 18,161 students to and from school—serving as the first and

last point of contact with students and parents—each day. Transportation maintenance technicians keep 544 buses up and running for the 34,689 daily miles they log. The district operates the largest bus fleet in Arizona, and is converting the bus fleet to propane. Last year Mesa Public Schools reduced greenhouse gases by 2,789 tons and became the first school district to win the Propane Autogas Fleet award. Using Technology to Provide Service to Parents Imagine supporting one of the largest websites and most active online presence of any K-12 school system in the world. That is all in a day’s work for Web services, the team responsible for supporting student and staff ’s use of Web-based technology. In addition to traditional research and learning tools, today’s students use online resources, video conferencing and cloud computing. As the call for technology increases, so do the demands for maintaining the district website and servicing employee and student email. Mesa Public Schools web users have created more than 675,000 unique pages of content, have uploaded more than 40,000 minutes or 29 days of video footage, and have helped build a site that attracts more than 100,000 daily page hits. In addition to website news and information, the district Facebook presence allows the community to keep up to date on accomplishments and events. Why Become a Times Media Group Advertiser? “You can have everything you want in life, if you will just help enough other people get what they want. ”—Zig Ziglar Seventeen years ago a guy with a dream—and not much else—walked out of the comforts of his job as an accountant to go and start a community publication in North Scottsdale. Having no sales or publishing experience whatsoever, he believed then, as he does now, that life is simply too short to spend it doing something uninspiring. Slowly, the fledgling enterprise began to pull its little head above water, owed mostly to luck, great people and flat out tenacity. Today, this fledgling enterprise has grown into Times Media Group, its print and digital products serving audiences all over Arizona, the publication you hold in your hands is one of them. At TMG, we continue to adhere strictly to the true life principles that have guided us thus far. So, here’s the skinny: You can choose to advertise wherever you like, heck we try lots of things too! But whatever you do, make sure to at least see if Times Media Group can help your business. If you like good ideas, straight-talk and measurable results, we’ve been waiting for your call.

Mardi Gras Gumbo March is Mardi Gras month. Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday,” is the last night of eating rich foods before fasting for lent. So let the indulging begin with this amazing and hearty recipe for seafood and sausage gumbo! My
thanks to Scottsdale resident Kathy Rice for sharing this festival of flavors in a bowl! Note: Gumbo is a soup, but it is often served over rice as a main course.
Seafood and Sausage Gumbo 3 pounds raw shrimp (16 count) in shell 1 1/2 quarts water 4 onions, 2 of them quartered, the rest diced 4 bay leaves 3/4 cup vegetable oil 1 cup all-purpose flour 5 tablespoons margarine or butter 2 green bell peppers, seeded and minced 4 celery stalks, minced 1 1/2 pounds Andouille sausage, cut into 1/2-inch slices 3 cups fresh okra, cut into 1/2-inch slices (may substitute frozen) 3 garlic cloves, crushed 1/2 teaspoon fresh or dried thyme leaves 2 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon white pepper 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 cup hot pepper sauce (adjust to taste optional) 2 cups chopped, peeled fresh or canned plum tomatoes (I prefer canned) 1 pound fresh crabmeat Boiled rice, to serve Crusty bread for dunking
1. Peel and de-vein the shrimp; reserve the heads and shells. Cover and chill the shrimp while you make the sauce. 2. Place the shrimp heads and shells in a saucepan with the water, 2 quartered onions, and 1 of the bay leaves and bring to a boil. Partly cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Strain and set aside. 3. To make a Cajun roux, heat the oil in a heavy-bottomed skillet. When the oil is hot, add the flour, a little at

a time, and blend to a smooth paste. 4. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly for 25 to 40 minutes until the roux reaches the color of peanut butter. Remove the pan from the heat and continue stirring until the roux cools and stops cooking. 5. Melt the margarine or butter in a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan or flameproof casserole. Finely chop the remaining onions and add to the pan with the peppers and celery. Cook over medium-low heat for 6 to 8 minutes, until the onions are soft, stirring occasionally. 6. Add the sausage, stir well, and cook for 5 minutes longer. Add the okra and garlic, stir, and cook until the okra stops producing white “threads.” 7. Add the remaining bay leaves, the thyme, salt, black and white peppers, cayenne pepper, and hotpepper sauce to-taste, if using. Stir well then stir in 1 1/2 quarts of the shrimp stock and the plum tomatoes. Bring to a boil, partly cover the pan, lower the heat, and simmer for about 20 minutes. 8. Whisk in the Cajun roux. Raise the heat and bring to a boil, whisking well. Lower the heat again and simmer, uncovered, for 40 to 45 minutes longer, stirring occasionally. 9. Stir in the shrimp and crabmeat. Cook for at least 3 to 4 minutes or until the shrimp turn pink. To serve, put a mound of hot, boiled rice in each serving bowl and ladle the gumbo over, making sure each person gets some prawns and some crabmeat. Serve with crusty bread for dunking. Serves 10 to 12. March 2014

Victim Restitution is Not Punishment, But It Sure Feels Like It! One of the fundamental principles of our criminal justice system is that one person should never be punished for the misdeeds of another. As Brian Strong a result, if an 18-yearold gets drunk and smashes several car windows with a baseball bat, his parents can never be sentenced to jail for the criminal damage caused by their adult son. And yet, as an Arizona criminal defense attorney, I have learned that many people are more troubled by the money they may have to pay than the time they could spend behind bars. In the criminal courts, there are many costs a defendant could be ordered to pay. Fines, monthly probation fees, lab costs (for drug testing) and victim restitution are some of the more common financial assessments. Fines, like jail time, are considered pure punishment. Probation and lab fees, however, are imposed under the theory that the criminal courts should be at least partially funded by the offenders. Victim restitution, however, gets imposed for an entirely different reason. The purpose of restitution is neither punishment nor user pay. The purpose of restitution is to make the victim(s) whole. This key legal distinction is why, in Arizona and several other states, parents of juvenile offenders can be court ordered to pay for the damage done by their wayward teen. Obviously that distinction never makes the parents happy. Whenever a juvenile court judge orders mom and dad to pay a $3,000 repair bill, they always feel like they are being March 2014
punished for the conduct of their foolish child. The Arizona statute that makes parents financially responsible for their underage kids is A.R.S. § 12661. Parents are deemed liable even in cases where they could not possibly have anticipated their child’s delinquent act. Parental liability is not limited to property damage alone. Theft (e.g., shoplifting) and physical injuries (medical bills) are also listed as mandating parental payment. In spite of that, however, the statute does contain some important limitations: • The child’s misconduct must be “malicious or willful,” not merely accidental. • There is a $10,000 cap for “each act.” • Liability is limited to the “parents or legal guardian having custody or control of the minor” when the event happened. Thus, if mom has sole legal custody and dad simply has visitation rights, dad cannot be held financially liable for misconduct that occurred while the child was in mom’s care. If your teenage son or daughter is ever arrested the possibility of detention time or probation terms are not the only reasons to hire an attorney. Rather than hire an attorney just for your teen, you might be better off hiring an attorney to represent your financial interests in a contested restitution hearing. Brian Strong is a criminal defense attorney with Rowley Chapman and Barney Ltd. For more information, call (480) 833-2341 or visit www. azlegal.com.

Understanding the Risks of Investing When it comes to successful investing in the stock and bond markets, few investors truly understand the relationship between risk and return. As I have written before in this column, to earn an investment return, you must take risk. Any financial product that promotes itself as generating a return without risk is falsely advertising itself. The only “risk free” investment today would be U.S. T-Bills that currently yield 0.12 percent annually. Annual inflation is currently between 1.5 percent and 2 percent. If you invest your money in risk free T-Bills, your current yield after inflation will be at least (-1.38) percent per year. Looking back over the years, if you had invested $1 in T-Bills in 1926 and held that investment until the end of 2012, your $1 would be worth $1.59 after adjusting for inflation. Conversely, if you had invested that same dollar in the U.S. Stock Market (as represented by the S&P 500 Index) in 1926 and held that investment until the end of 2012, your $1 would be worth $274 after adjusting for inflation. Investment risk comes in many forms, and each can affect how you pursue your financial goals. The key to dealing with investment risk is learning how to manage it. Here are three steps that you should take when investing in stocks and bonds: recipe corner

Step One: Understand Risk Fear of losing some money is probably the main reason why investors choose investments that are far too conservative for their investment time horizon. While investment risk does refer to the general risk of loss, it can be broken down into more specific classifications. Familiarizing yourself with the different kinds of risk is the first step in learning how to manage it within your portfolio. Risk comes in many forms, including: Page 30
the possibility of fluctuating currency values (currency risk) and the risk that political and economic upheavals may affect a country’s markets.
Market risk: Also known as systematic risk, market risk is the likelihood that the value of a security will move in tandem with its overall market. For example, if the stock market is experiencing a decline, the stock mutual funds in your portfolio may decline as well. Or if bond prices are rising, the value of your bonds may also go up. Interest rate risk: Most often associated with fixed-income investments, this is the risk that the price of a bond or the price of a bond fund will fall with rising interest rates.
Step Two: Diversify The process of diversification, spreading your money among several different investments and investment classes, is used specifically to help minimize market risk in a portfolio. Because they invest in many different securities, mutual funds may be ideal ways to diversify. Selecting more than one mutual fund for your portfolio can help further reduce risk. A broadly diversified investment portfolio should hold in excess of 5,000 securities.
Inflation risk: This is the risk that the value of your portfolio will be eroded by a decline in the purchasing power of your savings, as a result of inflation. Credit risk: This type of risk comes into play with bonds and bond funds. It refers to a bond issuer’s ability to repay its debt as promised when the bond matures. International investments also involve additional risks, including
Step Three: Match Investments and Investment Time Horizon to Goals Before you can decide what types of investments are appropriate from a risk perspective, you need to evaluate your savings goals and determine your investment time horizon. Is your goal preservation of principal, generating income for current expenses, or building the value of your principal over and above inflation? Is your time horizon (when you will need
the money) one year, three years, or over 10 years? How you answer these questions will enable you to find an appropriate balance between the return you hope to achieve and the risk you are willing to assume. Remember, the longer your investment time horizon, the more volatility or risk you can afford to tolerate in your portfolio Scott Johnson is a vice president with Arista Wealth Management LLC. Get the ‘Wright’ Smile with Orthodontics for Children and Adults Often the first thing you notice about someone is their smile. With the advancements in orthodontics, anyone can achieve a lovely and perfect smile, with a variety of techniques that match an individual’s own unique needs and lifestyle. Dr. Jack Wright has been making the Valley smile since 2005. With so many effective choices in braces, there is a solution for children, teens and adults. “We use traditional metal braces, clear braces and something called self-ligating brackets (offering reduced friction), Invisalign and Invisalign Teen,” Wright said. Invisalign has emerged as an incredibly popular treatment in straightening teeth in the past decade. It uses a series of clear, removable and on the town

comfortable teeth aligners that are virtually invisible. An added benefit is that brushing and flossing are not a challenge. After a series of aligners, the teeth move gradually. Invisalign is a great choice for some patients’ needs. “Come in for a consultation and I will help you determine if Invisalign is the best option for your orthodontic needs,” Wright suggested. Wright Orthodontics features another state-of-the-art advancement. “You’ll never have to experience an uncomfortable dental impression in our office. Our new Itero scanner eliminates that hassle,” Wright explained. “It’s a valuable piece of equipment because it captures a sharper image of your teeth than what has been previously available, without any mess.” events calendar

Dr. Wright and staff of Wright Orthodontics welcome you to the “Wright” smile.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist around the age of 8, because some orthodontic issues are best treated with early intervention. On the other end of the spectrum, Wright explained that you’re never too old to consider a teeth-straightening treatment. “The age of patients has definitely changed. We are beginning to see more adults seeking treatment than ever before,” Wright explained.
“We accept most insurance policies and we also provide 0 percent financing,” Wright noted. “Our staff is highly qualified and we treat our patients like family.” Wright Orthodontics has offices at 1118 N. Val Vista Dr., and 453 W. Fifth St., Mesa, with additional locations in Chandler, Litchfield Park and Peoria. Visit www.wrightortho.com or call (480) 969-1514 for additional information.

grilled chicken, lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs and kid’s spaghetti and meatballs. “We’re currently running a Monday through Thursday early bird special of $2 off on the pastas and that’s from 4 to 6 p.m.,” he said. “Our sliders and wide variety of burgers are excellent and there is a large selection of toasted hoagies to appeal to meat and veggie lovers, alike.” With such a large and diverse menu, customers are repeatedly returning to try everything and to take advantage of daily specials. “We have a reverse happy hour after 9 p.m. until closing,” Bruce stated. Also, enjoy happy hour, Monday through Sunday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Check Gus’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/gusinmesa for frequent updates. The atmosphere in this restaurant/ bar is fun, casual and kid friendly. It has 11 large screen televisions, easily seen from inside and from the lovely patio, a perfect spot to enjoy afternoons and evenings. “We are also available for catering,” he stated. Last October, Bruce and Deborah Towle took over Gus’s NY Pizza and Bar and there is much more to discover about this great restaurant, in addition to their exceptional pizza. A Life Member PGA Professional from the Lake Tahoe/Truckee area, Bruce now delivers his keen focus for excellence to the restaurant industry and in his opinion the best service is simply following The Golden Rule. The decision to jump into restaurant ownership was one that was rooted in that philosophy. “I want to treat people the way I want to be treated,” Bruce said. “We just want to provide great food and service.” He is turning good service into Gus’s trademark. They kick it off with appetizers. “The word’s not out yet on our outstanding chicken wings,” he explained. These delectables are jumbo wings and flavors include mild, medium and hot, barbecue, gold spicy sauce, honey barbecue and barbecue gold sauce. Don’t miss out on the traditional garlic knots made from Gus’s own house made pizza dough and served with garlic butter. There are also a variety of salads and hearty traditional calzones on the menu. Whether you build your own pizza or choose a specialty pizza, you’re in for a unique treat. The white pizza features mozzarella, ricotta, parmesan and garlic. “Our white pies are delicious,” he noted. The two top sellers are the Home Run pizza with pepperoni, sausage, meatballs, bacon, ham and garlic, and the Grand Slam pizza with pepperoni, sausage, red onions, green peppers and mushrooms. The menu is updated on occasion, so be sure to ask what is new. Pasta entrees include chicken parmesan, fettuccine Alfredo with
