A former East Mesa game designer turned his love of apocalyptic stories into his first published novel. Randy Lindsay’s “The Gathering” was picked up by Cedar Fort Publishing and hit shelves earlier this year. This is the first of five books in the Beginning’s End series. “It’s a story about a family that is facing the end of the world,” Lindsay said. “I thought it would be a good idea to put together a story to give people hope.” So, in June 2012 he sat down to write “The Gathering” and completed it nine months later. The book is written from the points of view of the four main characters —father John Williams, mother Becky Williams, the oldest son Robert Williams and the secretary of state in Washington, D.C. They are average folks with normal skill sets dealing with the situation at hand. The story touches upon unemployment, rampant violence and frequent food shortage, which pushes the United States on the verge of another Civil War. When writing the book, he said he considered the most likely scenarios. “What I tell people at my book signings is that there is a lot of scary stuff happening in the world right now,” Lindsay said. “I want them to be able to tell themselves that if the Williams family can survive the events in this book, then so can my family.” Reviewers have said the book “is really spooky because it could happen.” Lindsay said the storyline has really hit really close to the mark as far as what is happening in the world now. Due to his love of writing, he recently began an Apocalypse Panel, which includes seven authors who write similar stories. Lindsay said the online panel includes writers from South Africa, Utah and Ohio. The panel is open to others who wish to join. “Every month we throw out a question dealing with the apocalypse theme and everyone answers it,” Lindsay said. “We exchange emails and once we have what we are going to discuss, we each post an article on our own blog. “This is just fun.” April 2014

Esophageal Awareness Key to Race Participation By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski It seemed like it happened overnight. Denis Hunemuller was healthy and then one day in 2012 he was having trouble swallowing. Last June, he died of esophageal cancer caused by acid reflux, or GERD. “It’s one of the fastest-growing cancers, and one of the cancers with the lowest survival rates,” said his wife, Lisa Hunemuller of Northeast Mesa. “It’s a very deadly cancer, unfortunately.” To help bring awareness to the disease, Hunemuller heads up the Arizona affiliate of Esophageal Cancer Action Network or ECAN. The organization is one of the beneficiaries of El Tour de Mesa cycling race and fun ride taking place Friday, April 4, and Saturday, April 5, in downtown Mesa. “There are a few different charities that bikers can chose to sign up with,” said Baltimore-based ECAN President and CEO Mindy Mintz Mordecai. “Of course we always need money, but it’s
a big awareness opportunity. We’re going to have volunteers handing out materials. Materials are going to go in all the bikers’ bags.” More than 2,500 people are expected to attend the two-day event. ECAN is able to participate because of Hunemuller, whose husband was 57 when he died. “At the time, we knew nothing about esophageal cancer and our family has been educated about it the hard way,” she said. “We want to help others learn about the causes and symptoms and to work with ECAN to help fight for screenings and spread awareness.” Taking place during Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month, the weekend begins with the El Tour Bike Fitness Expo from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, April 4, at the Mesa Convention Center, Building B, 263 N. Center St. Hunemuller will staff the ECAN booth, which will provide life-saving information about esophageal cancer.

Arizona Gives Day Rallies Nonprofit Support
By Beth Lucas A Mesa man was able to live his final wish, as more than 30 family members came together at the Mesa Arts Center to watch his favorite music group, “America’s Got Talent” veterans, The Duttons. Ira Lavender’s memories and final wish were granted thanks to donations to Bucket List Foundation, a new Arizona nonprofit that provides wishes to seniors facing terminal illnesses, said founder and president Kimberly Iverson. The local group is among more than 800 diverse nonprofits that serve Arizona residents and who will rally for donations on the second annual Arizona Gives Day, on Wednesday, April 9. The Gilbert Education Foundation is striving to increase scholarships to high school seniors and educators, as the group also plans new classroom grants. Local business Bushtex Inc. is offering to match donations up to $5,000.
“Education affects everyone in our community,” said Leanne McEachran, Gilbert Education Foundation executive director. “It touches so many lives.” Arizona nonprofits rely on individual contributions for about 80 percent of their average revenue, organizers explain, and the day-long effort is aimed at shoring up fundraising that has fallen in recent years. It’s also a way for nonprofits to generate awareness of their work. “Our goal this year is to engage the community even more widely than we did last year,” said Patrick McWhortor, president and CEO of the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits, which launched the effort with Arizona Grantmakers Forum. Last year, more than 8,500 donors raised $1 million, he said. Donations can be scheduled in advance. Nonprofits will also compete for a variety of awards based on how many donors they attract, and the
dollar amount, all funded by sponsor First Bank. “Last year, 80 percent of the nonprofits who participated got new donors,” said Bryce Lloyd, Phoenix market president for First Bank, and board member of the Scottsdale Boys and Girls Club. “When we do well for our community, we do well for our businesses as well.” Donors and nonprofits can watch a live leader board on the website, http://azgives.razoo.com/giving_events/ az14/home, as they compete for prizes and launch their own social media campaigns for donations. “You can search for an organization that may be working on an issue you care about, or find an organization through a ZIP code search within your area,” McWhortor said. “In general over the past six years, nonprofits have been battered by the recession,” he added. Marissa Theisen is president and CEO of the grantmakers forum, and said that in Arizona, philanthropic assets made available, such as through grants, are lower than other states.
Mesa resident Ira Lavender, a lifelong musician, was granted a final wish by Bucket List Foundation, one of more than 800 nonprofits taking part in Arizona Gives Day on April 9.
“We really need to build the individual contribution pool,” she said. Nonprofits are also gaining technical training and support, as part of Arizona Gives Day, she added. “The work nonprofits are doing really makes Arizona a great place to live,” McWhortor said. “No matter where you are, you are benefiting from the work of a nonprofit. Whether you send kids to an afterschool run by a nonprofit, a family needing help with finances because of foreclosure or loss of job, or if you are a patron of the arts and enjoy the cultural amenities they provide.”

Make Your Own Laundry Detergent and Save Money pasta vixen
mom cents
Have you ever thought of making your own laundry detergent? It really isn’t as difficult as it may sound. Plus, not only can it help you save your hard-earned money, but with less fragrances and extra chemicals, it is gentler on sensitive skin. As a mom with three kids, who all have different allergies and sensitivities, I truly appreciate that. Yes, it does take more time to make your own laundry detergent than just picking it from the store, but you can make enough to last you a while and the savings are quite nice. photo page
Cost: approximately 10 cents for 2 cups As you can tell from these ingredients, this will not cost you a fortune, and by using gentle ingredients, those with sensitive skin in the family will thank you!

melts. Once all the soap is dissolved, add the 2 gallons of hot water into a large bucket along with your dissolved soap and stir well. Then add your baking soda and stir until dissolved. You will probably need to stir it again before you use it because it can get lumpy, but this is normal. To store, use old cleaned out liquid laundry containers, milk jugs or other closed container. Use half a cup on regular loads and a full cup on heavily soiled loads. This recipe made enough to fill two store-bought containers (4.68 quarts) and it costs less than $2. That is a nice savings that I’m happy to bring to my family—now, aren’t you ready to give it a try?
EAST VALLEY MOMS
navigating parenthood By Eva Dwight, B.A. MaEd. mom section
Facing Discouragement with Courage Of the four mistaken goals of misbehavior, the toughest one to deal with—I think—is “assumed inadequacy,” otherwise known as “giving up.” When Eva Dwight children believe they can’t be successful, and won’t even bother to try, they often mask their feelings of inadequacy with stubbornness, inattention, anger or an “I don’t care” attitude. That makes parents want to throw up their hands and give up. The children hope their parents will do just that. However, if parents can look at their child’s behavior through the lens of discouragement, and instead of giving up, find ways to encourage—or give courage to—their child, little by little, pasta vixen

they can help their child find a way to move forward. When my younger son started first grade, he refused to write the required three sentences a day in his “journal.” Flat out refused. We went ‘round and ‘round nightly, forcing him to stay at the table until he’d written his sentences, and when he was done, we were so mad at each other, we were miserable! I finally figured out that he wasn’t being stubborn. He was discouraged because he could tell me a whole story in the time it took him to write three sentences! His fingers couldn’t make the letters fast enough to keep up with his brain. When I offered to lightly write the words he dictated to me, he agreed to trace over my letters. He was able to do that successfully. Gradually, his fine motor
skills developed so that he could write short assignments independently. But any time he had to write a longer report or story, he dictated, I typed without using punctuation or fixing my spelling typos, and then he went back and edited. It was his writing. I just provided the bridge between his body and his brain. And that’s how we got through elementary school. It took time to figure out the core issue—several weeks, in fact, because I’m a little slow sometimes. I was able to offer baby steps that my son felt capable of mastering, which allowed him to develop the courage to tackle more challenging writing tasks as time passed. Other ways to encourage children who are stuck in “assumed inadequacy” include: • Stop all criticism. Notice every movement toward the goal and thank her for taking that step. • Model the self-talk you use to get yourself unstuck, and ask your child to repeat what you said but change the context to fit his situation.
• Use a family meeting to brainstorm ways to get unstuck and outlaw the words “I can’t” (with humor). • Focus on his assets and use them to handle challenges. (“Stubbornness” can be “determination” when used appropriately!) Moving through discouragement can be a tough challenge for adults. Recognizing it in our children and teaching them to move through it is imperative in building resilience and self-confidence. Eva Dwight is a parent, family and personal coach. Tweens ‘n’ Teens From dreaming up the latest fashions for the runway, to developing business plans and creating culinary confections, Tweens ‘n’ Teens Connect (TNT) offered at Red Mountain High School is the place for summer fun for students who have completed fifth through seventh grade. Participants choose from a variety of courses supported by the Career and Technical Education Department. Students can engage in VAULT, a new interactive program designed to introduce financial responsibility; design clothing and produce fashion shows in project runway; overcome the challenges of baking the perfect frosted treats in cupcake wars; or learn about the art of composition in photography; and much more. Whether they sign up for an individual class or the full-day camp, students will embark on enrichment activities that are fun and age appropriate, but provide valuable learning experiences and opportunities to apply their new skills. TNT keeps minds stimulated and exposes students to a variety of careers. Last year, students proclaimed the summer camp an “amazing” hit and parents reported an increase in dinner-table conversation as students recounted their daily experiences. Teachers discuss the impact of summer retention rates, and confirm the importance of keeping students socially and academically engaged over the summer to ensure a successful return to the new school year. Elementary Summer School High-quality elementary summer school classes are available at Salk Elementary School from June 2 to June 27. reinforcing skills in academic areas such as reading, math, computers and science. Special interest classes allow for exploration and exposure to lifetime skills in classes such as young chefs and young artists. Drama Club encourages creative expression through acting roles and culminates in a play presented at the end of the session. KidzCamp From 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, five campuses will offer KidzCamp for kindergarten through sixth-grade students. Sites include Crismon, Field, Mendoza, Salk and Wilson elementary schools. KidzCamp offers breakfast and lunch, field trips, arts and crafts, cooking, physical activities, swimming, science technology engineering and math (STEM) activities, including Bonanza Educational LEGO, the Enrichment Program that uses LEGO-brand toys to spark the imagination through engineering concepts and a creative mentality, weekly themes and more. This program emphasizes self and social awareness, thinking skills, creative expression and recreation. Senior High Summer School Senior High Summer School will be held in June and July at Westwood High School, and is open to all ninth through 12th graders, regardless of residence. These tuition-based classes include science, math, English, social studies, physical education, Spanish and driver’s education. It is a great way to get a jump on required courses or explore a new elective area. Mesa Distance Learning Program In addition to Community Education’s campus-based programs, the Mesa Distance Learning Program offers accredited computer-based summer classes for students in seventh through 12th grade. For registration and more information regarding summer programs, visit www.mpsaz.org/ commed or www.mdlp.org for Mesa Distance Learning. April 2014

album and it was time for us to go out and promote it and get on the road,” Ice-T said about the decision to play UFest. “We’re very excited about it. We’ve only done one show this year. This is really just the first show of a summer run we’re doing with Body Count.” The tour is taking place during a break from “SVU,” an award-winning sex crimes drama. Ice-T, who has played Det. Fin Tutuola since 2000, has a theory on why the show has been so popular. “I think the key to ‘Law and Order’ is it’s a whodunnit at the end of the day,” he said. “Every show works independently. It’s fun. It has a twist and an end.”
Adding to his recent list of accomplishments is the co-penned autobiography “Ice-T: A Memoir of Gangster Life and Redemption—from South Central to Hollywood.” Ice-T says the book was a natural progression for someone who describes himself as an “artist.” “Artists create art,” he said. “There are a lot of different ways of doing it. I’m one of those kinds of people, if I have free time I want to create something—fix up my cars, decorate my house, decide I want to tell a story. I’m a brainstorming kind of cat. I’ll sit back and say, ‘Man, I want to do that.’ Fortunately, I’ve been relatively successful at doing these things. I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t think anybody cared.”

Why Become a Times Media Group Advertiser? “You can have everything you want in life, if you will just help enough other people get what they want. ”—Zig Ziglar Seventeen years ago a guy with a dream—and not much else—walked out of the comforts of his job as an accountant to go and start a community publication in North Scottsdale. Having no sales or publishing experience whatsoever, he believed then, as he does now, that life is simply too short to spend it doing something uninspiring. Slowly, the fledgling enterprise began to pull its little head above water, owed mostly to luck, great people and flat out tenacity. Today, this fledgling enterprise has grown into Times Media Group, its print and digital products serving audiences all over Arizona, the publication you hold in your hands is one of them. At TMG, we continue to adhere strictly to the true life principles that have guided us thus far. So, here’s the skinny: You can choose to advertise wherever you like, heck we try lots of things too! But whatever you do, make sure to at least see if Times Media Group can help your business. If you like good ideas, straight-talk and measurable results, we’ve been waiting for your call.

What’s Cooking? By Jan D’Atri
Kit Cooking We’ve seen so many of them on store shelves for years. Packages and kits that make a meal or dessert, and all you do is add water or just a few ingredients. I’ve passed them up thousands of times, but this shopping trip was different. From chili kits to Kung Pao chicken sauces to signature marinades from famous chefs, I bought, cooked and ate my way through dozens of boxes and packets of “convenience foods” all designed to make our lives easier. I whipped and spread and stirred my way through dessert after dessert, asking the same question, “They may be convenient, but were they delicious?” Actually, many of them were. In fact, some tasted as scrumptious as homemade and that was a huge surprise to me. In my opinion, what topped the list for the best-tasting? It was in the dessert category and I found it at Fresh and Easy Neighborhood Market. The Fresh and Easy Chocolate Frosting Mix is as tasty as any homemade version and all you do is add a little butter (I used unsalted) and water. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to perfect chocolate frosting—adding espresso, imported cocoa powder and a pinch of exotic salt from Sicily. Truthfully, the next time I have to ice a chocolate cake, I’ll be heading to Fresh and Easy, where the package promises that it’s ready in minutes. Here’s a list of some of my favorites for convenience and flavor: Kit Cooking—Entrees: 1. Carroll Shelby’s Chili Kit (Safeway) Just add: Ground beef, tomato sauce and water (onion, optional) Done in 30 minutes
4. Zatarain’s New Orleans-Style Red Beans and Rice (Safeway) Just add: Water and butter Done in 18 minutes
2. Bear Creek Tortilla Soup Mix (Smart and Final) Just add: Water Done in 15 minutes
4. Louisiana Cobbler Mix (Smart and Final) Just add: Milk and can of fruit pie filling Done in: 40 minutes
3. Zatarain’s Crawfish, Shrimp and Crab Boil (Safeway) Just add: Water, seafood, lemon and salt Done in 15-20 minutes
6. Fresh and Easy Chocolate Frosting Mix (Fresh and Easy) Just add: Butter and water Done in: Minutes

5. Lee Kum Kee Kung Pao Chicken (Sprouts) Just add: Cooked chicken and vegetables. (Peanuts optional) Done in 6 minutes 6. Frontera Texas Original Taco Skillet Sauce (Sprouts) Just add: Ground beef and onion Done in 10 minutes 8. Louisiana Cajun Gumbo Mix (Smart and Final) Just add: Water and chicken, sausage or chicken Done in 15 minutes KIT COOKING--DESSERTS: 1. Be Careful with the Things You Say, Children Will Listen My wife recently gave birth to our first child. Words cannot describe what it was like to first see him, hold him and care Joshua R. Boyle for him. Do you remember seeing your first child for the first time? Did you think about how much you wanted to protect that defenseless baby? How much you wanted to do things right? I have so much to learn as a parent, but if I may offer one parenting tip I have learned from my family law practice it is this: Please, don’t let your children hear you say one bad thing about their other parent. Whether you are married to him or her, whether the words are true or not, it does not matter. Your children know they are a part of each of you, so when your children hear their mom say “Your dad is a jerk!” or hear their dad say that “Your mom is stupid!” then they are hearing that part of them is a jerk or part of them is stupid. Regardless of the words you use to put the other parent down (and those words are probably worse than “jerk” or “stupid”), you are directing those words at your children’s hearts and you will crush them. Your children are listening. Sadly, what I have just discussed is a part of far too many of my cases involving children. Parents, who are

supposed to be the “grownups,” often think the children should know how horrible the other parent is. It is an extremely immature thing to think that your children cannot love you just as much if they also love the other parent. It is even more ridiculous to think that your children need to know how you really feel about the other parent. Let’s be honest, it’s not about your children at that point; it’s about selfish old you. Love your children. Put them first. Don’t let them hear one awful thing from you about their other parent. Here’s my advice to my clients: Don’t run the risk of small ears eavesdropping by not saying a single disparaging word when the children are in your care. Tell your friends and family the same thing. And do not tolerate any disparaging words from anyone about the other parent on any blogs, Twitter accounts or Facebook pages. Remember your love for your children, put them first, and protect their sweet little hearts. Joshua R. Boyle is one of the newest partners at Rowley Chapman and Barney. His practice centers on any family law-related issues. Boyle earned his bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University in 2003, and his law degree from the same university in 2008. April 2014

In Estate Planning, the Difference is Crucial When planning your estate, be sure you understand the differences between bequests made in your Last Will and Testament and beneficiary designations for retirement plans, IRAs and investment accounts. The scenario plays out over and over again in attorneys’ offices: A family brings a parent’s Last Will and Testament (the “Will”) to be probated. The Will is complete and well thought out, and it takes into consideration current tax law. But under closer examination, the attorney discovers that the deceased’s estate plan doesn’t work. Why? Because a substantial portion of the parent’s assets pass under a beneficiary designation. Any asset that has a beneficiary designation is a nonprobate assets and is not controlled by the Will, according to the Financial Planning Association’s May 23, 2011, article “Don’t Forget to Audit Your Beneficiary Designations.” Increasingly, investors have the opportunity to name beneficiaries directly on a wide range of financial accounts, including employersponsored retirement savings plans, IRAs, brokerage and bank accounts, insurance policies, U.S. savings bonds, mutual funds and individual stocks and bonds, the CPA Journal wrote in its Nov. 1 2002, article “Coordinating Wills with Beneficiary Designations.” The upside of these arrangements is that when the account holder dies, the monies go directly to the beneficiary named on the account, bypassing the sometimes lengthy and costly probate process (although such assets are still included in the deceased’s estate for estate tax purposes). The downside, however, is that beneficiarydesignated assets pass “under the radar screen” and without regard to the directions spelled out in a Will. This all too often leads to unintended consequences—individuals who you no longer wish to inherit property will receive property, and some individuals will receive more than intended and some will receive less; ultimately, there recipe corner

may not be enough money available to fund the bequests laid out in the Will. Consider the following hypothetical scenario: John has $600,000 in property that he intends to pass equally among his three children under his Will. John also has a life insurance policy for $150,000 that names only one of his children as the sole beneficiary. When John dies, that one child will inherit all of the life insurance money ($150,000) and onethird ($200,000) of the assets passing through John’s Will. So instead of each of John’s children receiving $250,000, one of them receives $350,000 and the other two each receive $200,000. John’s plan under this Will and his intent to treat all of his children equally has been defeated because John never updated the beneficiary designation on the insurance policy make all of his children equal beneficiaries of the insurance policy. The same result would occur even if John’s Will had specifically stated that the life insurance policy should be shared equally, because the Will is not an effective way to amend a beneficiary designation. A beneficiary designation always overrides any instructions included in a will.

Unnamed or Lapsed Beneficiaries Not naming beneficiaries or failing to update forms if a beneficiary dies can have unintended repercussions. For instance, a recent case that came before the U.S. Supreme Court illustrated how a simple beneficiary form review could have prevented undue stress and bitter divisions for one family. Specifically, in Hillman vs. Maretta, the court ruled in 2013 that a decedent’s ex-spouse, who was still named as his beneficiary,
was entitled to receive his federal life insurance benefits. The unanimous decision came despite the fact that an applicable state law specified that a divorce removes an ex-spouse as the beneficiary of a decedent’s various death benefits, according to FinancialPlanning.com’s Nov. 1, 2013, article “Beneficiary Form Trumps Divorce in High Court Ruling.” While this case was centered on the proceeds of an insurance policy, similar, equally unfortunate scenarios caused by poor planning or benign negligence could affect IRA and other retirement account beneficiaries. For instance, if the beneficiary of an IRA is a spouse and he or she predeceases the account holder and no contingent (second in line) beneficiary(ies) are named, when the account holder dies, the IRA will then be paid pursuant to the default beneficiary provisions set forth in the IRA Agreement governing the IRA. The default beneficiaries will vary among IRA providers and you should determine the default beneficiaries under your IRA provider’s IRA Agreement. If the default beneficiary of the IRA is your estate, this would prevent your children from stretching IRA distributions (and tax-deferral benefits) out over their lifetimes. Planning Priorities Given these very real, very preventable consequences, it is important to take steps to assure consistency between your beneficiary-
designated assets and the disposition of property as it is spelled out in your Will. First, make sure to communicate your plans and designations to family and beneficiaries, especially if you are making unequal distributions. This can help avoid potential conflicts between beneficiaries. Second, you should review your beneficiary designations on a regular basis—at least every few years—and/or when certain life events occur, such as the birth of a child, the death of a loved one, a divorce or a marriage, and update the designations, as necessary, in accordance with your wishes. Lastly, make sure to keep thorough records so that it is clear to the executor what assets have beneficiary designation and what assets should be disposed according to the terms of your Will. Contact your trusted financial adviser and attorney for help in creating or updating your estate plan. Gabe Hoffmann is senior vice president of the investment firm Morgan Stanley Wealth Management.
