year’s campaign. Toro seniors led the way in 2013 with starters covering all main offensive positions. At wide receiver, the Toros’ top five targets are all graduated, including First Team All-State receiver Clark Brown. Junior wide receiver Mata’ava Ta’ase was the only underclassmen to have more than three receptions in 2013. Ta’ase gathered 14 receptions for 167 yards last season. Quarterback is another key position for the Toros in 2014. The position is seemingly up for grabs as senior Trevor Willis only took five snaps last season. Running back is the position the 2014 Toros will have the most experience. Senior Caleb Daniels was second on the team in rushing yards with 292 and tied for the lead with five rushing touchdowns. Mountain View will kick off the 2014 season on Aug. 29 against Boulder Creek High School. Other key games for the Toros include Sept. 26 against 2013 Division I quarter-finalist Pinnacle and the season finale on Oct. 30 against semi-finalist Desert Ridge.

The Mountain View Toros enter the 2014 season ready to dismiss their finish from last year. The Toros finished the season 6-5, but lost four of their last five games, including their first-round playoff game to Pinnacle High School. Improving from a 6-5 record from last year will not be easy after losing four all-state players, but fourth-year Toro head coach Chad DeGrenier is no stranger to producing positive results on the football field. DeGrenier took an 0-10 Cactus Shadows team and two years later turned them into a state champion, en route to winning the 2006 Arizona Republic Coach of the Year and MaxPreps National Coach of the Year awards. The Toros will need multiple breakout seasons in order to make up for their senior production in last

To better serve the community, and to enhance market values, the agents below have taken part in the Northeast Mesa Home Marketing Tour. In order to even make it on this page, they have regularly attended the marketing tour to give and get feedback for the listings that make it on. If you are planning on selling your home and feel that experience and exposure are necessary when it comes to selling your home, seriously consider choosing an agent from the list below. These agents can guarantee that your home will be placed on the marketing tour and provide you with the exposure
and feedback that you need to better help you sell your home. Sure, you can put your home up for sale through your neighbor, cousin or co-worker but in the end, couldn’t that hurt what you receive as a sales price if you decide on a person that wasn’t part of a collective of agents committed to getting the most for your home? Anyone can “Slap and Hang” a home, you need to choose an agent that is updating themselves in REAL time. Most, like us, would strongly argue that when it comes to marketing or selling your home, the power of peer feedback
and the networking involved is a powerful thing. Choose an agent that is committed to the community. If you recognize a name from below, you know you are dealing with a person that puts professionalism at least at a minimum standard of participating in the Northeast Mesa Home Marketing Tour so they can learn and teach simultaneously. The home tour is a powerful thing. Choose an agent that can give you that power. Let your neighbor be your neighbor and family be family. You deserve experience and collaborative efforts from a group, not just an agent.

By Meghan McCoy An interest that began at age 5 about Davy Crockett recently blossomed into a book that shares the story of a real person, a man Mesa resident Terry Green believes has been forgotten—William Patton. “He went with Crockett to Texas and he has been forgotten by everyone,” he said about Patton, the nephew of Crockett. “This book is very important for me. I hope to have a small voice for William Patton.” In the 1950s, when Davy Crockett portrayer Fess Parker was introduced to the nation, Green became interested in the Alamo. That interest, paired with Crockett, led the Mesa resident of more than 15 years into further researching the topic for his fiction book, “The Shadows of Great Men.” “I am convinced he was at the Alamo and believe his name should be among those who fought there,” he said of Patton.
The book was a 10-year process. After having a stroke in 2011 and retiring from his job, Green delved deeper into his project. Green, who worked in newspapers, as a teacher and as a seminar facilitator, even received information from the Alamo Library. “I love research. I think it’s fun. I don’t think it’s boring at all,” he said. Green said although the names are real, the story is fiction. The story shares Patton’s journey to Texas, his relationship with his uncle and his fight in the Texas Revolution. The novel sheds light on doubts and fears and the evolution of a man. He said that when he began writing the book, he thought he knew a lot about the Texas Revolution, but was pleasantly surprised when his knowledge for the subject expanded. “It was a wonderful process,” Green

said. “It was long and hard, but ultimately very satisfying.” Although “The Shadows of Great Men” is his first physical book, he published an e-book on Amazon. “I’ve been writing all of my life,” Green said. He has begun brainstorming his next book, which will share the story of his great-grandfather and his service during the Civil War.

Mountain View Grad One of Country’s Top 10 Young Women By Meghan McCoy When Jaylia Yan heard her name being called as one of the 10 finalists in the 57th Distinguished Young Women National Finals competition July 28 in Mobile, Alabama, she was “freaking out inside.” “It was shocking when they called my name,” the Mesa teenager said. “Being named top 10 was such an honor, and I was able to share that with some of the most amazing girls.” To participate in the Distinguished Young Women of Arizona scholarship program, Yan had to have a minimum 3.5 grade point average. She was scored in a 10-minute interview with a panel of five judges; a 90-second performance on stage during the talent portion; 10-minute aerobic routine; on-stage question, poise and speaking during selfexpression, as well as grades and college entrance test scores for the scholastic portion of the program. Yan sang “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” during the talent portion.
“I stepped on that stage, and that was the last thing I remembered before stepping off the stage,” she said of her performance. “That night was full of happiness and emotion.” The scholarship program began 57 years ago and has provided more than $367 million through local, state and national level competitions. Yan said she heard about Distinguished Young Women through the loud Jaylia Yan speaker while attending Mountain View High School. “I wouldn’t give up the experience for anything in the world,” Yan said. “An unforgettable experience.” She spent two weeks in Alabama

Love of Christ Lutheran Church (LOC) is inviting the public to attend its annual open house and ministry fair to gain awareness of the church’s program in an atmosphere of food, fun and games for kids. The fair will be held on the church campus in the Center of Compassion (COC) from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 17. Families are encouraged to attend the contemporary service an hour before at 9 a.m. “There are so many influences pushing families in different directions these days,” said Senior Pastor Don Liles. “Kids face more temptations and thus more questions than ever before. Our
doors are always open to help people rediscover church, and we offer great programs for kids.” Booths staffed by church volunteers ring the inside of the COC auditorium that will display many of LOC’s available programs. More than 25 ministry areas will be represented including youth, women and men’s ministries along with opportunities to help serve in the community. For more information about the fair, call (480) 981-6199 or visit www. loveofchristchurch.net. Love of Christ Lutheran Church is located at 1525 N. Power Rd., between Brown and McKellips roads, in East Mesa.
ONe TRUe LOVe Feeds People and Spreads Love By Lynette Carrington ONe TRUe LOVe is literally taking its message and good deeds to the streets. The Mesa-based nonprofit focuses on feeding the homeless and providing support and love in a nonjudgmental and positive way. Ann Cabano co-founded the organization with Krysten Aldridge in December 2010, and they filed for their nonprofit status in January 2013. Each month, the organization feeds the homeless and uses a donated food truck to cook and pass out hot meals along with other in-kind donations. “We have an angel sponsor right now who is sponsoring the rental of food trucks,” said Cabano, a Mesa resident. “Last time, we had a food truck company donate one. We’re working toward getting our own food truck. That’s our main focus right now.” They set up food distribution at 12th Avenue and Madison Street by the Central Arizona Shelter Services building, where many homeless folks congregate. “The way we get the word out is through our big mouth, face-to-face and any way we can... Facebook and our website, too.” In June ONe TRUe LOVe made 450 hamburgers on the “Spice It Up” food truck and passed them out with the added assistance of the vehicle’s staff. “Every time we go out there, there’s a crowd,” Cabano noted. August 2014
Chris Paciora, who owns Spice It Up, said it was “fantastic.” “It was eye-opening, first of all,” Paciora said. “ONe TRUe LOVe was very organized, and the quality of their volunteers was outstanding. Krysten and Ann are fantastic people. All four of the people in our family participated and maybe, by us leading the way, other food trucks will take notice and get involved.” Unconditional love and hugs are part of the organization’s recipe. “This is about love, connecting with people and seeing people,” Cabano said. “We’re just not affiliated with a church. We hug people, talk to them and have conversations. People are people, and anyone could be one paycheck away from suddenly having to make a tough decision.” The way that the organization name reads with the small ‘e’ has significance. “I wish I could tell you there was some fascinating story, but it’s evolved into so much,” Cabano said. “Little ‘ego’ is one of the things it means and getting that out of the way so we can unconditionally love others. People see our logo and they remember that. It’s kind of like a signature.” For more information about the group, visit www.onetruelove.org or join its Facebook page at https:// www.facebook.com/ONeTRUeLOVe. Movement or call (480) 209-4355.

Back-to-School Immunizations and Physicals Important
By Tracy House Schools have been working all summer to welcome the kiddos back through the classroom doors and to ensure pupils are walking through those doors healthy, it might be a good time to schedule that back-to-school physical and verify the kids are up to date on their immunizations. Dr. Jessica Regnaert, a family practice physician with Banner Health Group, offered some timely suggestions for keeping the kids healthy. Beginning with students just starting out in kindergarten, Regnaert said, “It’s very important, especially prior to starting kindergarten, to make sure that they’re up-to-date on their immunizations and safe when they go back to school.” Regnaert recommended parents
schedule physicals early in the summer or even have annual physicals around a child’s birthday to keep him or her on a yearly schedule and to avoid the summer rush on sports physicals. The crucial ages to be sure children are up-to-date on immunizations are around 4 and 5 years old or kindergarten age; 10 and 11 years old; and students who have graduated high school and are off to college. “College, especially living in dorms, can be places where a lot of germs are spread.” Schools require students to have updated immunizations. “Looking at it from the school’s perspective, they’re just trying to protect all their kids and make sure that something doesn’t spread through the school.”

For uniform shopping, think outside the uniform shop. Old Navy, www.amazon.com, JCPenney, Kohl’s, Target and others offer uniform options that are almost always cheaper than the uniform shop. Just make sure that the items fit the criteria of the school before purchasing.
supplies. They are offering new deals every week, so you never have to pay full price.

Supplies Before you start shopping, make a list of what you need. Search your house for any items that you can reuse from prior years. Don’t buy anything that isn’t on your list and never pay full price. There are plenty of sales going on all month on everything you will need.

Clothes Shop secondhand as much as possible. Check thrift shops, consignment stores and even yard sales for clothes. Shopping online can also save you when you use coupon codes (www.savings.com is a good resource) and cashback sites like www.ebates.com. Look for a sale and free shipping before making a purchase. With in-store shopping, use coupons on top of current sales

Although you will find great deals at the office supply stores, don’t get everything there. Shop retail stores, like Target or Walmart, as well as the drugstores for school
Books Do comparison shopping before purchasing books (try www. BookFinder.com). Purchase used books whenever possible or try renting textbooks that you know you won’t need in the future. Try www.TextBookRentals.com to compare prices and learn about different rental companies.

there’s so many changes in their body, I think it’s really good to hear, coming from their doctor, ‘This is what’s going to be happening.’” Hearing what to expect about body changes from the doctor, as well as from the parent, can put a child at ease and open a dialogue for a conversation. “We talk to them about everything from grades, how are they doing in school, to what are their future career plans, and are they dating, are they being safe. So much general health stuff.” Regnaert said she hopes parents see the doctors as a back up and an advocate for them. High school students can also benefit from an annual physical. “That’s an age where we like them to come in and realize that a relationship with their doctor is something they’re going to have over their whole lifetime—it’s good to start building that relationship so that way they can get to know us, trust us and share any concerns they have healthwise.” This includes talking about healthy behaviors, drug and alcohol use, diet,
exercise and especially driving safety. Regnaert mentioned the No. 1 killer of high school students is car accidents. Opening the lines of communication between the physician, parent and child is a healthy habit that develops through annual care that includes upto-date immunizations. “We’re here as support for the parents and making sure their kids are healthy.” Banner Medical Group primary care providers like pediatricians, internists, family medicine physicians and obstetrician/gynecologists staff Banner Health Clinics and Banner Health Centers. For more information, visit www.bannerhealth.com/bmg. To view a schedule of immunizations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, visit www.cdc.gov/ vaccines/schedules. n the outside I was perfect, even commended: perfect wife, perfect mom, and perfect friend. Still, on the inside, I was in prison. I don’t know how else to describe what I was feeling. No matter how hard I tried to be good, it was never enough. I listened at the church I attended, trying to hear all the things I needed to do so I could be good enough. “I just need to try harder,” I’d convince myself. I shared with a friend how I was feeling, and in return, I got a blank stare. I was feeling so alone. All of the things I was taught to do―and boy, there were a lot of things―I did them, but I still felt empty. I wanted so badly to please God, but on the inside, I was wasting away. I felt like God still wasn’t happy with me. I wasn’t happy with me. I hid behind my smile and I was suffocating. No matter how hard I tried to be good enough, I just wasn’t; there was always some failure glaring at me in the mirror. I found myself being driven to places that I shouldn’t go. I just wanted to medicate my emotions. But then, one day, I opened up the Bible. I don’t know whether I was trying to appease God, or if I was trying to find out what I was doing wrong and what other hoops I could jump through in order to be a good person, but I began to read the Bible in secret. And do you know what I found? Freedom. I have read Romans chapters three through eight 20 times now. It’s like this great big secret that no one in my world is talking about, and it’s right there staring me in the face. The answer: Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. 21 But now a righteousness from God, apart 20
Nearby News • For News Around Our Neighborhood
from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference,” (Romans 3:20-22)
And I find the same message in 1 Corinthians, Galatians, Philippians, Ephesians; it’s everywhere in the New Testament! I’m not the first one to try and be good enough by my behavior; and I’m not the first to fail at it. No one can do it. We are all destined to fail at being good enough on our own. But there is hope; there is a righteousness that I can have. It’s the one that comes simply by faith in Jesus. He did it all for me. He was perfect. That was the point. He was perfect, but He died like a sinner, so that even in my sin I am made perfect in Christ. Until now, I had seen and heard stories of people being rejected by the church and their families, because they weren’t good enough. And if the church rejected them, then certainly God was also rejecting them. So then I had thought that God must also be rejecting me, or He was getting ready to. But the Bible gave me a different message; God loved us while we were still sinners. Now goodness is easier, since it’s not a chore. When I learned that God has grace for me, I finally began to have grace for myself. I have since found a church that teaches the Bible and its message of grace, which is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I still go to church every week. I try to be a good mom, a good wife, and a good friend. But now, things are different; the smile on my face is finally coming from the inside. I don’t have to hide anymore. Living Word Bible Church www.livingwordonline.org August 2014

Setting Teens Up for Success Teenagers get a bad rap. They’re frequently characterized as emotional, defiant and disrespectful, sources of gray hair and frazzled nerves. Eva Dwight In reality, proactive parenting that sets kids up for success can fill those teen years with fun opportunities for connection on increasingly deeper levels, as the youngsters take bigger and bigger steps toward adulthood. It’s easy to assume that, because teens look more grown-up, they need less parental involvement. Actually, adolescence is considered a “critical stage” in brain development, during which children acquire increased abilities for understanding cause/ effect, time management, future planning, etc., but need guidance in pasta vixen

putting that understanding to practical use. Chemical changes in the brain cause adolescents to be less in control of emotions and more likely to take risks. Social pressures abound, school gets harder...How can parents help teens navigate such a rocky life stage? Connection before correction is a great rule of thumb. There will be times when you’ll need to address a problem with your teenagers’ behavior or attitude. If you have a respectful, loving relationship, these challenging moments will be blips on the radar rather than looming catastrophes. Even if your children act like they don’t want you around all that much, eat together several times a week and talk about your day. Play a game or watch a show together at least once a week. Do chores and laugh as you complain about them together.
Stay involved in your children’s schoolwork. Go to open houses. Check grades online weekly with your teens and help them contact a teacher about getting extra tutoring when needed. Establish each evening what homework they have and stay near while they completes it, then confirm that it’s finished and put away, ready for turn-in. Make binder/backpack cleanout a weekly, together-time activity for strengthening organizational skills. Know where your children are, and make sure there is adult supervision. Either call ahead to speak to the friend’s parents about supervision, or knock on their door for a quick meet-and-greet when you drop your children off. Your teens will roll their eyes at you, but they’ll get over it. Keep ‘em busy. Sports, clubs, volunteer work, church groups—all provide chances for teens to build independence and responsibility muscles in structured, supervised
environments that stress positive values. Be firm, be consistent but be open to discussion. Children need practice advocating for themselves and creating logical arguments. Give them that opportunity and be open to changing your mind if they produce a reasonable plan that allows for independence and ensures safety. Allowing teens to step into the pilot’s seat while you play copilot, provides important practice in using adult thinking skills, while still giving you access to the controls. Proactive parenting with a foundation in a mutually respectful, loving relationship will be the lighthouse that guides you and your children through the rocky waters so you both look back at those teen years with a smile and exclaim, “That was fun!” Eva Dwight is a parent, family and personal coach. Nickel Creek Celebrates Reunion, 25 Years By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Nickel Creek’s Sean Watkins, Sara Watkins and Chris Thile knew they had something special. After a long hiatus, the Watkins siblings and Thile came together at the latter’s apartment to write a few songs, for maybe an EP. “It was really comfortable,” said Sean Watkins, via telephone from his tour bus that was traveling through the Blue Ridge Mountains. The EP turned into the full-length collection “A Dotted Line,” songs from which the band will perform on Thursday, Aug. 28, at the Mesa Arts Center “The reason it turned into a record and tour is because it was so comfortable and easy. We stayed really close over the years and hung out with each other a lot—not officially, but here and there,” Watkins said. Not only is “A Dotted Line” Nickel Creek’s first album since 2005, it celebrates the California-bred acoustic trio’s 25th anniversary.
Page 24
“I don’t know how it came up, but this year is our 25th year as a band,” Watkins said. “We started when we were really young. We thought, ‘We should do something to commemorate that. “We were going to do 25 shows and record an EP to sell at the shows. But the writing happened really, really quickly and easily. It was a lot of fun. It was a lot more normal and natural and easier than it had been in the past. We had enough songs to hit the road with it and do proper tours.” Nickel Creek toured for five weeks in the spring, and is in the midst of a seven-week jaunt. On July 1, during the brief break in traveling, Watkins released a solo album, “All I Do is Lie.” “I made it over the course of a year— June 2012 to July of last year, 2013,” he said. “I meant to put it out last summer, but it just kept getting delayed. I put it out in between these two Nickel Creek tours. I’m really happy with it. It’s my first solo record in nine years.”
Recently reunited Nickel Creek will visit the Mesa Arts Center for a performance on Thursday, Aug. 28.
The delay came because he wanted a group of songs he could stand behind, tracks that represented him as a solo artist. “I didn’t really have anything that I felt really proud of for a solo record until a couple years ago,” Watkins said. “Now it feels good to have this group

of songs that I can stand behind as a solo artist.” Nickel Creek performs 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at the Mesa Arts Center’s Ikeda Theater, One E. Main St., Mesa. Tickets are $30 to $65. For more information, call (480) 644-6500 or visit www.mesaartscenter.com.

Southwestern Grilled Corn and Chili Salad You probably wouldn’t recognize my kitchen table on Sunday mornings. It’s pretty fun to look at, though. Old recipe boxes are stacked on top of each other. Mounds of heritage recipes that I’ve researched, collected and categorized fill the tabletop from corner to corner. Then the organizing begins. The pile that’s always the highest is the “gotta make it now” category. Because of your family stories and kitchen memories attached to these recipes, Sunday mornings for me have become rich and rewarding “play dates” that I relish. This week I reached through my paper trove to open the diary that I kept while on the road rescuing recipes a few years ago. Out fell a sheet of paper and along with it the memory of Tucsonan Selina Ramos, who had emailed me about her family’s Southwestern Grilled Corn and Chili Salad recipe. Her note mentioned that it’s
Selina’s Southwestern Grilled Corn and Chili Salad 2 tablespoons olive oil 4 large fresh ears of corn 1 poblano or hatch chili, chopped fine 1 large jalapeño pepper, chopped fine 1 red bell pepper, diced 1 yellow bell pepper, diced 1 cup chopped jicama 1 bunch green onions, sliced thin (about 7 onions) 1 teaspoon ground cumin 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped fine Juice of 1/2 lemon (or juice of 1 large lime) 1 teaspoon garlic salt or sea salt 1 teaspoon fresh ground pepper

perfect as a picnic salad or a tomatoless salsa for chip dipping. I stuck it on the “gotta make it now” pile and made it later in the day. This salad is really delicious because it has that fantastic Southwestern flavor of grilled corn off the cob. The variety of hot chillies and bell peppers add a lot of flavor, and the hint of cumin brings it all together. I had never thought of grilling jicama before, but it was wonderful in this combination. Selina’s got the right idea with this dish being a great picnic or backyard barbecue salad because it transports and holds up well in the heat. In fact, it can be eaten warm right from the skillet or chilled.

In a large skillet, heat olive oil on medium high heat. Slice corn from the husks and cook in olive oil until kernels become browned. (Caution, kernels can pop slightly.) Note: You can also grill corn on the husk until blackened, then slice off the kernels and add to skillet. Proceed to next step. Turn heat to high and to the corn add chillies, bell peppers, jicama, green onions and cumin, stirring constantly. Cook for 2-3 minutes. Pour mixture into serving bowl. Toss in cilantro, lemon or lime juice, garlic salt or sea salt and pepper. Serve warm or chilled. August 2014

At our practice, we believe that dentistry hasn’t really changed, just dental technology. We believe in providing excellent customer service and establishing personal relationships
with our patients. Call us old-fashioned, but our patients are still our number one priority. Our office has a fully functioning hygiene department, using laser cavity detection, intra oral cameras, and digital x-rays. We follow both ADA recommendations along with strict Dental Board Standards. Dental Center of Mesa raises the bar on your dental care, making it convenient, affordable, all while providing advanced technology. Dental crowns are done using state-of-the-art CEREC technology. Your tooth is prepped, multiple images are taken, eliminating the need for a messy dental impression, and then uploaded to a computer. Dr. Kalika then customizes the design to your specific needs, both selecting the type of material, and shade. An onsite milling unit then receives the information and begins preparing a crown. Within minutes, your dental crown is completed, no need for multiple appointments, saving both time and money for our patients. Dr. Kalika never charges his patients for a Consultation or Second Opinion. One of the highest compliments our practice receives is referrals from both our existing patients, and the many specialists that we work with. Dental Center of Mesa has been servicing Phoenix Metro Valley for over 20 years. Divorcing Parents—Avoid Alcohol Abuse, Illegal Drugs or Excessive Prescription Drug Use If you as a parent have filed for divorce or are seeking sole or equal decision making of your minor children, the court Paul S. Rowley must decide what is in the child’s best interests, if you and your spouse cannot agree. If your spouse alleges you abuse alcohol or drugs, most likely the court will require you to be drug tested. Usually, this is a urine test but could also include a hair follicle test. Hair follicle testing can detect drug usage as far back as 90 days, whereas a urine test only detects drugs in the past week or so. If you are ordered to do a hair follicle test and you shave your head or body hair it will be impossible to test and it will look like you have something to hide! At least 1 1/2 inches in length is required for testing purposes. If you have used drugs in the past few days you could test positive in the urine test and negative in the hair follicle test. Recently we have been seeing parents who abuse opiates and prescription pain medication, like vicodin or percocet. Methamphetamine is also commonly detected. Even if you take a diet weight loss medication, it could show positive for amphetamine. Alcohol and marijuana are also detectable in a urine test. So if you are a parent, whether divorcing or not, if you use alcohol, marijuana, amphetamines,

barbiturates, opiates, benzodiazepines, phencyclidine, propoxyphene or cocaine and your fitness to have custody of your children is questioned, the use of any of these drugs can trigger a loss of legal or physical custody. Also, if you test positive the court may require you to test randomly for several months until you are free and clean of drugs in your system. My advice: • Avoid all drug use unless it is prescribed by a physician and you take it as prescribed. • Never drink and drive. • Never abuse drugs and drive. Several states have legalized marijuana use, but if you are trying to keep custody of your children, being under the influence of legal marijuana is not a great defense when it comes to the “best interests” of your child. We are a full service law firm. Call us at (480) 833-1113 if you have any questions whether it is for family law, criminal defense or any other legal situation you may be facing. Paul S. Rowley is the managing partner at Rowley Chapman and Barney Ltd. His primary legal practice is family law, but he also practices in aviation law as well as a variety of litigation matters. He attended Arizona State University (B.S., 1980) and Southwestern University (J.D., 1986). He is a member of the bar of the U.S. Supreme Court and a Maricopa County Judge Pro Tem. August 2014

Emergency Funds—How Much is Enough? financially speaking

An emergency fund can provide a financial cushion in the event of a loss of income. But today’s low interest rates and longer time between jobs may require a reconsideration of the old rules of thumb. According to research by Bankrate.com’s June 2013 Financial Security Index Charts, 67 percent of Americans have an emergency fund that holds enough to cover at least three months of expenses. Access to an emergency fund is essential in the case of an unexpected event that reduces your regular income. Emergency funds have the potential to help cover your everyday expenses so you can avoid tapping into your savings for retirement, college and other long-term needs. There are a number of considerations in determining the amount to put aside for shortrecipe corner

term needs. It must first be stated, however, that the question is often answered not by a dollar figure, but in terms of the length of time an individual believes the funds will be needed. Consider, as well, that today’s low interest rates translate into a relatively low gain on the account, necessitating a greater level of savings or new strategies for investing for the short term. We will examine first the question of the time period for which to cover. An old rule of thumb states that an emergency fund should consist of three to six months’ worth of expenses. This may not be sufficient in today’s environment, due to low interest rates and long stretches of unemployment. In an April data release, the U.S. Department of Labor stated that 57 percent of unemployed Americans were out

of work for at least 15 weeks, and 38 percent had been unemployed for at least 27 weeks. The same report concluded that the average length of unemployment, without seasonal adjustments, was 37 weeks, or roughly eight and a half months. Revisiting the Bankrate.com June 2013 study, only 24 percent of respondents had at least six months’ of savings in their emergency accounts. In terms of vehicles, savings accounts or money-market mutual funds offer instant access, although current yields are low and may not keep up with inflation. You may also be able to use your Roth IRA as an option, as Roth IRA owners may withdraw their contribution principal at any time for any reason, without tax or penalty. Roth IRA withdrawal of earnings or conversion amounts under specific circumstances may be subject to taxes and penalty. One thing you will want to think about is the percentage of current income you would want to replace,
which may be less than 100 percent, depending upon your current income and expenses. On the other hand, you may need a larger emergency fund if you have a mortgage, children and/or a nonworking spouse. Finally, no matter how much you set aside and how you choose to allocate your short-term savings, revisit your plan periodically to make sure you are on track as living expenses rise. Consult with your trusted financial adviser about the most appropriate emergency fund for your situation. He and his wife, Mazie, live in the Arboleda community of northeast Mesa where they are raising their three children.
