A former Mesa official whose Vietnam War experiences were depicted in the film “We Were Soldiers,” will lead the East Valley Veterans Day Parade at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8. Ret. Army Col. Bruce Crandall, the former public works manager for the City of Mesa and resident of Manchester, Washington, will return to the area to serve as the grand marshal of the parade, themed “BravoZulu Job well done,” that goes along Center Street in downtown Mesa. “I’m a Medal of Honor recipient,” Crandall explained. “I’m the vice president of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, and I travel a great deal for the character-development programs that we sponsor.” He received the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military honor, from President George W. Bush in 2007 in recognition of his brave actions in the Battle of la Drang during the Vietnam War. Crandall’s heroism is depicted in the 1992 book “We Were Soldiers Once... And Young.” In the 2002 movie “We Were Soldiers,” he was portrayed by actor Greg Kinnear. Crandall served as an aviation consultant during filming. He said he’s excited to return to Mesa, which he calls “a city that I love.” When he was living in Mesa, he assisted with a character-development training program set up through the Mesa Public Schools. “We consider this program as our Medal of Honor recipient legacy,” Crandall said.

“We consider that the young folks are not getting the same things that we got when we were growing up about patriotism and citizenship. They’ve got the wrong idea, as far as we’re concerned, about what courage is. Courage is not in combat. Service is not in the military. It’s in your community.” Lowell “Ed” Fox is an honorary service representative for the Air Force. He served in the U.S. Navy and retired from the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant colonel and established the Air Force Junior ROTC program at Highland High School. “I’m retired now, and that program was established in 1995,” Fox said. “I enjoyed very much teaching a lot of the basic values that help people to be successful in whatever endeavor and share how the military translates the values of good citizenship into being a good member of the team and serving the country. Working with the youth was a real rush.” Other honorary service representatives include • Army: Karl Kohlhoff, colonel, U.S. Army Reserves Retired. • Navy: Joe Schneider • Marines: Lew Bradley Guard: Art Sloane, • Coast commander, enlisted adviser, retired. Mesa Athlete Hopes to Break Ironman Barrier
I
’m married―twenty years. I’m actually happily married. So, the other day my wife walked by, as I was commenting on the garbage overflowing. She was walking out to the pool, in full swimming attire, and I was distracted for a moment. I just stared at her as she walked to the back door. The problem is that I was mid-sentence, commenting on the overflowing garbage that I was about to take out, and I said, “Man, that’s an awful lot of junk jammed into a little space.” I am, of course, referring to the garbage, but my wife turns around, and I’m looking right at her. Ever been misunderstood? I’m a preacher. No, it’s true. One thing I’ve noticed is that the Bible is often misunderstood. For instance, as a young man I was told that to be a Christian you couldn’t drink, smoke, have tattoos, or cuss. That’s not actually in the Bible. Good thing too, because by the seventh grade, I could cuss as good as any baby-booming sailor. I was going to church, but by man’s definition I wasn’t a Christian. If I stopped cussing, then I might be back in? Paul teaches us in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, that to be a follower of Christ―a Christian―I must believe in Christ as the only son of God, who died for my sins; Christ has rendered my sins of no consequence. It’s not about what I do, but about what I believe. Paul says in Romans 7 that he keeps doing what he doesn’t want to do. Sin has a hold on him. And then he goes on to say that it isn’t him that does it, but sin living in him. What? Paul is sinning? That’s what it says, and while writing this no less! Christ has created this new scenario, so that even when I do sin, I didn’t do it; it’s the sin living in me that did it. My wife says, “Who left this kitchen such a mess?” And I say, “Not me. It was sin living in me.” So then the seventh-grade me who cussed was still a Christian. While the church may have rejected me,
On the web at www.NearbyNews.com
God did not. And as you can see, neither did the Bible. And while man may condemn me for not hitting “the bar,” Paul writes in Romans 8:1 that “there is therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ.” This means I’m innocent, not by my own effort, but instead, by Christ, who lived perfect for me, and then gives that perfection to me by faith in Him. Satan doesn’t like the Gospel. He wants you to believe that the Bible isn’t relevant anymore, or that it’s boring, or that it’s not accurate. If he can get you to misunderstand the Gospel, even just a little, he can keep you in prison. It’s how he deceived Eve. He said “Did God really say…? God’s holding out on you; eat this if you want to become like Him.” And he’s saying the same stuff today. “Is the Bible really truth?” Yes. Misunderstanding the Bible has too many people believing that the church fundamentally rejects their lifestyle, their decisions, or their past. But this isn’t what the Bible says. If church is only for the perfect, then none of us get to go. God sent Jesus for the sinner, not the saint. While man rejected a woman caught in the act of adultery, Jesus did not; He accepted her and forgave her. Jesus has a different message about Christianity. He died for the sinner. For this reason, I gladly raise my hand and say, “I was a sinner.” God loves and accepts you―He created you. And this was the plan all along. You see, when I stop letting sin separate me from God in my mind, then, and only then, do I become empowered to live for Christ. Why? Because sin loses its hold on me. Receive God’s grace today. Jesus died for you. When you come to church, just be U―the U that Jesus died for. BE U Living Word Bible Church www.livingwordonline.org Page 9

Youth Animal Exhibitors Bring Swine to Fair By Tracy House
A tradition for 130 years, the Arizona State Fair is returning Wednesdays through Sundays, Oct. 10 through Nov. 2, providing entertainment, rides and attractions, including the youth animal exhibitors competing for grand champion. Two area youths are returning with their swine to show and, hopefully, come away with the top honor.

By Meghan McCoy Red Mountain Branch will feature up to six local authors during its first Local Children’s Authors Book Signing Event this month. “The Mesa libraries normally host a Local Author of the Month on consecutive Saturday afternoons at each location,” said Stephanie Foster, Red Mountain Library reference librarian. The event will provide authors with the opportunity to interact with the public, as well as sell and sign their books from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Red Mountain Branch Library, 635 N. Power Rd., Mesa. “This is the first one just for children’s authors, which I think is really fun,” said Gilbert resident Kristi Grimm, who is one of the authors participating in the event. She said interacting with the children is the best part about being an author. Grimm works with her husband, Dave, in producing children’s books. She writes the books, while he illustrates with colored pencils. The couple has produced four books in their series “Mommy Tell Me a Story.” The series includes “Mommy Tell Me a Story About a Car,” “Mommy Tell Me a Story About a Plane,” “Mommy Tell Me A Story About What Daddy Does,” and “Mommy Tell Me a Story About a Fish.” With a society of movies, television
and games, children have lost touch with the idea that they can entertain themselves by using their imagination, Grimm said. “I want children to understand that their imagination is not limited by only one topic,” she explained. “Your imagination is never limited by anything.” Each book begins with a little boy who is bored and asks his mom to tell him a story about a different subject matter. The stories are educational. Each of the books includes a fun, factual question page, as well as coloring pages. The third book, “Mommy Tell Me a Story About What Daddy Does,” was written for the City of Mesa and distributed to kindergartners in the city two years ago. It touches upon recycling and why it’s important. Grimm has also published the book “Diabetes and Healthy Eating” to help young children understand diabetes, as well as the role food plays in the body. Other authors participating in the event include: Sue Mason, author of “Charlee’s Halloween Adventure;” Helena Toscano, author of “Herbie the Hermit Crab;” and Ruth Kuntz, author of “Dan & Jules Adventure Series.” “This event is a bonus for people interested in viewing and possibly buying children’s books for their families, all in one location,” Foster said.

King Tapes Customer Property Available Downtown
By Lynette Carrington Customers of the video duplication business King Tapes and Printing in Mesa were devastated to learn their VHS and camcorder tapes were locked in storage when the owner closed the business. Numerous news sources and customers reported that owner John Clayton Giroux did not return photos and videos that contained precious memories of births, weddings and special events, even though the services were paid for. Angry customers flocked to Yelp and Yahoo and lodged complaints with various organizations to no avail. Giroux’s former business partner, Trent Smith, was able to enter King Tapes. He retrieved more than 1,000 home movies. The Downtown Mesa Association now has the tapes for the owners to claim. “There are mostly tapes, but we did have some pictures and some negatives,” said Erica Snyder, events manager for Downtown Mesa Association.
“We’ve probably had 60 people or so come in to claim their things, but we still have a lot left.” She said the former customers are excited and grateful to have their memories returned. But for others, it was a task. “For some people, it’s as easy as going and finding their last name because some things were labeled,” she said. “Some people, we don’t have their last name on a box, so they are going through everything.” Former King Tapes customer Denise Cummings didn’t label her tapes. “I counted on them to organize them,” Cummings said. “I just went to the Downtown Mesa Association to get my tapes back, but there were still hundreds of containers of tapes all along the hallways and in offices.” She admitted she was frightened she lost all of her home movies of her children’s formative years. “I half expected I truly would not get them back ever again,” Cummings

said. “Now, who knows what kind of damage has been done to them sitting in the building all summer long with no air conditioning.” Cummings said she suspected that King Tapes’ Groupon offer several months ago snowballed into a bad situation. “When I dropped my tapes off, he really seemed overwhelmed,” she explained of Giroux. Got Memories, located at 3519 E. Shea Blvd., Suite 124 in Phoenix, is offering a $100 credit to transfer tapes for jilted King Tapes’ customers if they produce a receipt from the defunct company. Those who had tapes at King Tapes can call Downtown Mesa Association at (480) 890-2613 to schedule a time pick up their belongings. Downtown Mesa Association is located at 100 N. Center St. in Mesa. Is Your Child Ready for a Cellphone?
By Tracy House Cellphones, like driving and voting, have become a rite of passage, but at what age is it appropriate to give a child one? For parents thinking about getting their children their first phone, there’s more to consider than the argument, “Everyone else has one.” Tracey Fejt, a mother of four children ages 12 to 16, said parents have a lot to consider when it comes to cellphones and kids. She waited until her children were in junior high before getting them phones. “Being a parent, I did set some guidelines for my kids,” said Fejt, a registered nurse, injury prevention coordinator/outreach manager at Cardon Children’s Medical Center. Among the guidelines are limiting the number of people kids are allowed
to contact and the number of texts. “Parents should be aware if they want to give those younger elementary students a phone...it should be for an emergency.” Fejt also sets time limits on phone use. She finds it important to discuss with her children when phones are appropriate and when they’re not appropriate. Children will emulate adult behavior. Fejt said it’s vital for parents to show restraint with their cellphones, particularly while driving. “Parents should be aware that kids are watching those habits,” she said. “So we wonder why teens are texting and driving. Well, they’ve seen their parents do it all these years. So if it’s all right for their parents, it’s all right for them.”
Parents also need to consider shutting off the phone at night. “How many kids go to bed with their phone on and they’re up all night?” she said. She suggested having a docking station in one place so that all the phones can be monitored. “I think the docking station and seeing all the phones is a good thing parents can do.” Every parent is going to have a different reason for deciding when their child needs a cellphone. Tracey Fejt “I think of it as a rite of passage for children,” Fejt said. “Every kid develops differently, so some kids are extremely mature and ready to handle it and other kids are not.” There is no tried-and-true appropriate age for giving a child a

cellphone. Fejt said to consider if the child is ready for the responsibilities that come with a cellphone. “Once your children do get older, parents need to remember you have to have a phone talk,” she said. “Sexting is huge with kids and parents don’t necessarily think about talking about it, but then those pictures get out and they get passed around. Clearly, having that talk with them, too, has to do with responsibility.” She mentioned stressing to children not to give out their numbers randomly or to get others without knowing the person first. “If they are having issues, make sure they can come back and talk to you ... continues on page 23

How to Make a Frugal Pillowcase Pumpkin mom cents
Fall—with its cooler temperatures and delicious food—is my favorite season. I love pumpkin-flavored everything so, this year, I thought it would be fun to do easy DIY crafts that showcased this. Supplies You Will Need: 1 orange pillowcase. (Check secondhand stores or dollar stores) Several sheets of old newspaper. The more you have the better. Green ribbon or green scrap fabric. Raffia. How to Make It: Start bunching up and balling up the newspaper into large balls. You don’t want to make it too compact, but instead fluffy.

Begin filling the inside of the pillow with the newspaper. Don’t pack it in as, again, you want it to act as a stuffing inside the pillowcase. Fill it as close to the top as possible.

Once full, gently press the newspaper down into the pillowcase. Grasp the top of the pillowcase and twist.
Begin accenting the green ribbon or scrap fabric with the raffia. This will give it a fun, rustic look and also look like vines coming out of the stem.
6
Once you are done, you can choose keep it as a whole pumpkin or add a face to turn it into a jacko-lantern. To do this, simply cut basic shapes out of your black felt. You can do circles, triangles, squares, etc. Apply some craft glue to each piece and press onto the pillowcase creating a face. Allow plenty of drying time before displaying.
Have fun!

navigating parenthood By Eva Dwight, B.A. MaEd. mom section
Junior High Jitters and Eating Elephants Valley schools have been in session for several weeks now, so a number of kids—and parents— are experiencing the “junior high jitters.” Eva Dwight Children who sailed through elementary school are struggling for the first time, while others who have always struggled find themselves completely stymied by multiple teachers, assignments and expectations. Bewildered parents ask, “What can I do?” I am reminded of a familiar riddle: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. pasta vixen

expensive homes
First Bite: Organization Make straightening up a nightly routine. Take 10 minutes to go through the abyss that is his backpack with your child, supervise completion of unfinished work and help him put things where they belong. Remove anything that has a grade on it, to avoid clutter, and keep it in a folder at home. Second Bite: There is Always Homework! Be aware of which teachers assign homework and how often. “I got it done at school!” she says? “Great!” you say. “Show me!” At the very least, there are notes and lists to be studied in preparation for upcoming tests, so until your child has a consistent pattern of doing all required work, do not accept, “I don’t have any homework,” without proof. Third Bite: Contact Teachers You have one child. OK, maybe you have more than one. Most junior high school teachers, however, have more than 100 students to keep track of. Call or email as soon as you notice a problem with a grade and help your child make an appointment for extra

help. He may be uneasy about this at first, but he will get comfortable with it in time. Before long, he’ll be making his own appointments. Fourth Bite: Brains Under Construction Keep in mind that transitioning to junior high requires a lot of frontal lobe brain activity from your child. That is the part of her brain that will be under construction for another 10 years. The junior high environment can be overwhelming for kids, and many of them don’t have the skills to manage it all independently. So if you’re thinking, “Whew! We made it through elementary school—now this practically grown kid of mine won’t need me as much!” ...think again. Your child needs you now, more than ever, to help her navigate all of the thinking and organizing and planning that are required of her. Be prepared to provide structure, strategies and emotional support through this transition year. Many children will continue to need that support, although in ever-decreasing amounts, throughout eighth grade and as they make another transition to high school. Last Bite: Don’t Be Afraid to Ask For Help Talk to your child’s school counselor. Sign up for parenting classes that offer opportunities for you to learn more about your child’s development and effective strategies for parenting through the teen years. Before you know it, you will have eaten that whole elephant and your child will be a capable, confident young adult! Dessert anyone? Eva Dwight is a parent, family and personal coach. Pan-Seared Pork Chop Casserole Casseroles are amazing. Their makeahead versatility is a great helper in the kitchen. But casseroles also provide the opportunity to let ingredients meld, often creating more robust flavors as they cook. Then, there’s the pan-seared method of cooking, where ingredients cook quickly on the outside, searing in those wonderful juices. One of my all-time favorite dishes combines pan searing and casseroles.
Pan-Seared Pork Chop Casserole 4 (1/2-inch-thick bone-in) pork chops 1 1/2 teaspoon salt, divided 1 teaspoon pepper 1/4 cup flour for dredging 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided 1 cup (1 medium to large) sweet yellow onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, slivered or chopped 1 tablespoon parsley 1 1/2 pounds fresh white mushrooms, sliced 1/2 cup marsala or sherry wine or chicken broth

In this recipe, the pan-seared pork chop is finished in a casserole dish and smothered with sautéed mushrooms. Ah, the best of both worlds! To make this fall favorite even more delicious, I’ve given you a simple recipe for homemade apple chunks as a perfect accompaniment, too! Look for big, thick bone-in pork chops for maximum flavor and make a plan to dish up a plate of goodness for any weeknight or Sunday supper.
Step No. 1: Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees. Step No. 2: Season pork chops on both sides with salt and pepper. Dredge pork chops lightly in flour. Step No. 3: In a nonstick skillet, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil and 1 tablespoon butter. Place pork chops in skillet and cook over medium high heat until browned on both sides, about 3 to 4 minutes. Transfer pork chops to a plate and cover. Step No. 4: In the same skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 2 tablespoons of butter. Sauté onions and garlic until soft and golden brown. Stir in mushrooms, parsley and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cook for 10 minutes. Step No. 5: Grease with oil a casserole dish that is approximately 9 inches. Place half

of the mushroom mixture on the bottom of casserole. Place cooked pork chops over top of mushroom mixture. Top with remainder of mushrooms. Step No. 6: In same skillet, add wine and 1 tablespoon of butter, and gently scrape up all remaining browned bits in pan. Bring liquid to a gentle boil and then pour over top of mushrooms in casserole dish. Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes. Serve with homemade apple chunks. Homemade Apple Chunks 4 to 5 firm apples, peeled, cored and sliced thick 1/2 cup brown sugar 2 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 dash of fresh grated nutmeg 2 tablespoons brandy, optional 1 pinch red pepper flakes, optional 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
In a medium saucepan on high heat, add all ingredients and cook for about 5 minutes until apples are soft but still chunky. Serve hot or warm. October 2014

A story is told of a poor farmer whose friends all said he should buy a horse to help on the farm. With a horse, his Nathaniel H. friends said, the Wadsworth farmer could grow more crops and relieve himself of some of the hard labor required on the farm. So the farmer saved up his money for many years to purchase a prize horse. After he purchased the horse, however, the farmer realized that he did not know how to use the horse to help with the farm work. He was too embarrassed to ask someone, and so he continued to do all of the farm work alone. The farmer failed to realize the full benefit of the powerful animal he had worked so hard to acquire. In a similar way, there are many people who realize that there are advantages to forming a separate legal entity, such as an LLC or a corporation, to run a business, but fail to realize the full benefit these entities can provide. One significant advantage to using a corporate form is that it can keep a person from being personally liable for a business obligation. For example, if an LLC is sued for a breach of contract, the business owners often cannot be sued so long as they properly used the LLC in running the business. Simply having a corporation, however, does not provide sufficient protection. The people owning the business must also
Nearby News • For News Around Our Neighborhood
properly disclose the existence of the corporate entity, usually by using the proper designation such as “LLC,” “Inc.” or “Corporation.” It must be clear to other people that a person is operating on behalf of a corporate entity. By way of illustration, suppose that John Doe forms the entity Acme LLC for operating his farm. If Mr. Doe signs a contract for the sale of crops on behalf of Acme but only uses the name “Acme” instead of “Acme LLC,” then Mr. Doe risks being personally liable for the farm crops and, in the event the farm breaches the contract, Mr. Doe can be sued. Many potential problems can be avoided by simply using the proper corporate designation on contracts and other documents. Of course, there are other things business owners should be careful about to protect themselves, such as not commingling business assets with personal assets and being honest in business transactions. If you are starting a new business or have questions about an existing business, we would be glad to meet with you to discuss ways to help yourself and your company. Nathaniel H. Wadsworth is a partner in Rowley Chapman & Barney. His practice consists of business law and general litigation. An Effective Gifting Strategy in a Low Interest Rate Environment
For families with significant assets, gifting to children or other family members beyond the annual $14,000 limit means cutting into their lifetime estate-and-gift allowance of $5.34 million (in 2014). But one effective way to transfer assets without triggering the gift tax is through intra-family loans, according to the Internal Revenue Service. Under rules set forth in the Internal Revenue Code, it is possible to make loans to family members at lower rates than those charged by commercial lenders without them being deemed gifts, as long as the lender, usually a parent or grandparent, charges interest and the borrower pays back the principal and interest per the terms of the loan. If the borrower invests the loan proceeds at a yield exceeding the interest rate charged on the loan, such amount is effectively “transferred” to the borrower without triggering any gift tax. A brief example may help to illustrate the point: Assume you make a nineyear, $5 million loan to your child at 1.4 percent annual interest, compounded annually. Your child then invests the loan proceeds and earns a 7 percent annual yield. After paying you interest at the end of each year, and repaying the loan’s principal amount at the end of the term, the investment would have a projected value of almost $3.4 million. You would have made a substantial wealth transfer with no gift tax and no future estate-tax consequences. For this not to be deemed a gift, however, the loan must meet certain terms set out in the Internal Revenue Code. First, you must use an IRSapproved interest rate, called an applicable federal rate (AFR), which the Treasury determines every month. There are three general categories of AFRs: short term, for loans lasting up to three years; midterm, for loans lasting more than three years but not more than nine years; and long term, for loans lasting more than nine years. loans originating during July 2014, the AFRs were 0.31 percent, 1.40 percent, 3.06 percent, respectively, according to the Internal Revenue Service’s Index of AFR Rating. You can structure the loan as a balloon note, meaning that the borrower pays interest only during the course of the loan and only repays the principal at the end of the term. And if the borrower wants to pay off the loan early, the terms of the loan can be structured so that there are no prepayment penalties. Note that you will have to declare the interest as taxable income on your tax return, regardless of whether it is paid or added to the loan. The key, of course, is the AFR. During periods of low interest rates, when AFRs are minimal, it is generally easier to invest the proceeds at higher yields. The larger the difference between the two rates, the more wealth will effectively be transferred. Intra-family loans also pose certain advantages over third-party loans. For one, they allow the interest paid over the course of the loan to stay within the family rather than being paid to a bank. In addition, an intra-family loan can allow children who have a

poor credit history to buy a home or to start a new business. Furthermore, it allows families to avoid the normal expenses incurred with loans, such as administrative costs, closing costs and appraisal fees. Be aware, however, that there is potential risk should one party not hold up their end of the deal. That’s why it is important to formalize the transaction and involve a financial planner and an attorney. Also be prepared to demonstrate that the loan is legitimate and that repayments are being made per the terms of the loan. This documentation will also help sort matters out if the lender should die before the full value of the loan has been repaid. An intra-family loan can be used as a simple and effective wealth transfer device, but make sure you work with a qualified professional. Ask your trusted financial adviser about this and other effective strategies for wealth transfer. Gabe Hoffmann is senior vice president of the investment firm Morgan Stanley Wealth Management.
