When you battled cancer 20 years ago, how did you juggle your busy life and treatment? “In 1992, just two years into the growing business and pregnant with my third child, I was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer called Burkitt’s lymphoma,” she said. “Burkitt’s lymphoma affects the lymphatic system, an important part of our body that helps fight infection. It is an extremely aggressive form of cancer, growing very rapidly. Doctors told me that without hasty and aggressive treatment I would likely die.” Meanwhile, she still had to run Valley Sleep Center. She underwent treatment while pregnant and gave birth to a healthy baby boy—
ironically on her birthday. Today, she battles rheumatoid arthritis and takes chemotherapy to keep it under control. “I’m not afraid and celebrate each day the adversity I’ve overcome. I’m thankful for cancer and things it’s taught me. Not only did I get to see my three children go to kindergarten, but I’ve seen them graduate high school, go to college, get married and I’m even a grandma now. So today, 22 years later, I share this with you— always kiss those you love goodnight as tomorrow is never promised.” What was it like becoming a firsttime grandma and what are some of the fun things you do to spoil little Zoey? “Zoey is the best gift I’ve ever received,” Leadley said. “By the time this article publishes, I’ll have another grandchild. Zoey will be a big sister. My daughter, Kaylee, and son-in-law, Scott, live in Sydney, Australia. Crescent Crown Distributing wrapped one of its trailers with the 100 Club of Arizona logo to show support and bring awareness to the organization.
Crescent Crown Honors 100 Club By Lynette Carrington Crescent Crown Distributing understands the importance of the 100 Club of Arizona. The 46-year-old 100 Club of Arizona provides immediate financial assistance to families of public safety officers and firefighters who are seriously injured or killed in the line of duty, according to its website. Crescent Crown Distributing paid tribute to the 100 Club of Arizona’s mission by wrapping one of its distribution trailers in the nonprofit’s mission statement and logo. “We’ve been doing a lot of work with the Mesa Police Department in the two years we’ve been located out here in Mesa,” explained Rich Marchant, Crescent Crown Distributing’s executive vice president of operations. Marchant and Barb McReynolds, the Mesa Police Department’s special projects coordinator, came up with the idea. Crescent Crown distributes malt beverages and beer to a 12,000-squaremile area that includes Maricopa, Pinal and Pima counties. The wrapped 100 Club trailer will get a lot of visibility. “Our plan is to circulate the trailer across all 12,000 square miles of our area,” Marchant said. “We move the trailer every month to a different community so it gets seen by the maximum number of people possible. The decals typically last three to five years and we expect it to last that long. If it doesn’t, we’ll rewrap it.” Mesa resident Mary Ann Mendoza is one of the survivors helped by the 100 Club. Her son, Mesa police officer

Brandon, was killed May 12 by a wrong-way driver on his way home from work. “Brandon was just such a force when he would walk into a room,” Mendoza explained. The officer loved his family and particularly enjoyed his nieces and nephews. He loved photography and architecture and Christmas was his favorite time of year. He would take his mother’s nutcrackers on fun “adventures” each year much to his family’s amusement. “He wasn’t only my son. He was my friend,” noted his mother. After Brandon’s death, 100 Club was there to help Mendoza. “The first contact I had with them was at the hospital. They approached me and handed me an envelope and said it was from the 100 Club to help out with everything,” she said. When she arrived home, she opened the envelope and found $15,000 to help cover funeral expenses. “It was a huge thing because this isn’t something you expect to happen... That took a huge burden off of me to where I was just able to go through the week and get to the cemetery and pay for everything without any of that added stress,” Mendoza said. The 100 Club also assisted with fees in cleaning out Brandon’s home, associated storage fees and travel expenses for Brandon’s brother who flew in from Korea where he was stationed. By Meghan McCoy For some people, the housing market crash was a catastrophe. But Mesa resident Tom Fitzgerald, a Valley luxury home builder, turned the experience into a way of exploring his creative side. This summer, Fitzgerald published his first thriller, “Defector in Our Midst.” The novel revolves around a terrorist plot and uncovers the main character’s ties to WWII. “I love the creativity,” Fitzgerald said of writing. “I love being able to get my thoughts and ideas down on paper.” “It is fast pace and fun to write,” he said of the novel that has quite a few historical facts included. The Mesa author received mounds of support for his first novel from family and friends, including acquaintances from the Israeli Army and the FBI. Channel 12 news anchor Mark Curtis introduced Fitzgerald at his standing-room-only book-launch party at Changing Hands in Tempe. The idea for “Defector in Our Midst” germinated after he took a family vacation with his wife and five children to Washington, D.C. “The kids wanted to see all the historic museums,” he said. One of the museums they explored was the National Holocaust Museum, where he spent a great deal of time reading. “The more I read, the more I wanted to learn more about it,” he said. “I just

Fitzgerald will hold a contest for fans to name his second book. “We are going to give them some options,” he said of the title. “We want to get everyone involved.” For more information about Fitzgerald or his books, visit www. Diary of an Inquisitive Teen: Coming to America By Akash Kumar New Delhi, India Aug. 11, 2014
Akash Kumar is an exchange student from India attending Mountain View High School as a senior. He will live in East Mesa for the next year. Here as part of a Department of State program, Akash is a student journalist in India. Read his work at www. akash.jeevanmag.com. This month, we introduce his column, “Diary of an Inquisitive Teen.”
Life is standing at a critical turn and I recall “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost: “Two roads diverged in a wood/And I—I took the one less traveled by.” Well, as a matter of fact, I don’t know if my journey to the United States is going to make a big difference in my life or not. But, good or bad, it’s going to be an experience. This year is not going to be just a year, but “my life in a year.” At the time when my inner fire was going out, this opportunity came to my rescue and the fire inside of this creative cat was rekindled. See, I was chosen as the youth ambassador of India on the YES program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. We, the young ambassadors of India, were all set to bid a goodbye to India—our beloved motherland, “the cradle of human civilization,” in the words of Mark Twain. Separation brings love
at times; my nationalistic friends are shouting “Vande Matram” (“Mother India, I salute to thee”) at the top of their voices. Mesa Sept. 30, 2014 It has been about a month and a half since I came here. There was a lot to do and, despite the heart’s urge to jot down my memoirs, I didn’t have time. I reached Newark and then Washington, D.C., by bus. The journey that started from the capital of the largest democracy in the world has ended in the capital of the oldest modern democracy of the world. In Washington, D.C., there was a huge gathering at the Hilton of student ambassadors from several countries. It was really a huge opportunity to learn from different cultures.

I even met girls of Indian origin who were representing South Africa. Exchanging the currency with one of those girls was unforgettable. The Indian rupee has Gandhi on it and the South African rand is adorned with Mandela, exchanging the tradition of the great souls who showed the world a peaceful way of demonstrating anger. On Aug. 14, I flew to Phoenix only to have another orientation program. But what I waited for was to meet my host family. The Phoenix orientation was yet another lesson, but what I remembered was the golden mantra of intercultural learning: “No two cultures are better or worse, they are just different.” It was Aug. 15, India’s independence day, and all the exchange students from different parts of the world celebrated it for me. It was undoubtedly a moment of sheer joy and pride.

YEUNG
The Arizona Rattlers have scheduled an open tryout from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Gene Autry Sports Complex, 4125 E. McKellips Rd., Mesa. Anyone interested in joining the world champions in 2015 is encouraged to attend. The Rattlers, one of the most storied franchises in Arena Football League history, have won the last three ArenaBowl championship games. The cost to participate is $80 (only cash or money order will be accepted, no personal checks). Registration will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude at 8:55 a.m. Participants must register to take part in the tryout. Participants must provide their own cleats, shorts and accessories. The tryout is noncontact, so pads and helmets are not necessary. Participants also must be prepared upon their arrival—no locker room facilities will be available, although restrooms will be accessible.
The Arizona Rattlers won the last three ArenaBowls
The coaching staff, including general manager and head coach Kevin Guy, will evaluate participants in the 40-yard dash, short shuttles and position drills. Arizona turned in one of the most dominating seasons in AFL history in 2014. Under Guy, the Rattlers rolled up 14 straight victories—the best start in league history and the longestwinning streak in a single season. The team also had won 18 games in a row dating back to 2013, a league record for the longest overall winning streak. For more information, visit www. azrattlers.com.

Clinic 24 Offers Holistic Approach to Health Care
By Tracy House Putting the patient first is the cornerstone of Clinic 24’s philosophy. The newly opened medical facility brings together professionals from throughout the health industry to provide a patient-centered approach to health care. The facility offers insurance-based primary health care, membershipbased concierge health care and walk-in urgent care. Kristin Fusaro, R.N., director of clinical operations, explained Sunshine Pediatrics, Gila Internal Medicine and Oasis Gynecology are providing services as part of Clinic 24. There is also a cardiologist, physiatrist, ultrasound technician and lab services, physical therapist, aesthetician and health coaches on premises to see patients. The intent is to bring as many services together under one roof. “A lot of it has to do with continuity of care,” said Fusaro, a nurse for more than 20 years. “That’s the role of the health coach.
The health coach brings all of that together and they’re responsible for their patients.” Each patient is assigned a health coach who walks them through each phase of care. Ultimately, Clinic 24 is trying to provide patients with a path to wellness with its mantra, “Don’t just survive, thrive.” The health care coach, or care coordinator, is Clinic 24’s way of bringing back the personal touch to medicine. Fusaro explained Clinic 24 is “old school.” Staff members listen to patients’ stories, instead of typing information into a computer based on a prescribed list of questions. “Once the provider gets the opportunity to spend some time with them (patients), to know their story, they can help gear that information over to the health coach who can navigate the person through care.” Continuing with personal care, Clinic 24 is offering concierge service, which is open to anyone who may

want enhanced medical services. It was created in response to patients who have high deductibles, are uninsured or want their services in one place. The concierge plan, which can be paid for monthly or annually, can be combined with health savings account. There are two plans—basic and elevated membership—available with services and classes as part of the plans. “We want to gear everybody toward preventative health and wellness,” Fusaro said. In addition to the primary care and concierge services, Clinic 24 has an urgent care that is open to the public. Clinic 24 was two years in the making. “The intention is to keep the review of systems under one roof so they can be addressed to provide whole patient care, Fusaro said. Girl Scouts: Serving Others, Building Skills
By Tracy House They may be best known for their cookies, but there is more to Girl Scouts than the annual fundraiser. And for troop leader Alanna Iannone, her daughters have benefited in far more ways than just selling cookies. Iannone is the leader for two troops: a Cadettes’ troop with her oldest daughter Brianna, 12, and a Junior troop with Bailey, 9. Girl Scouts are grade appropriate: Daisies are kindergarten and first; Brownies are second and third; Juniors are fourth and fifth; and Cadettes are sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Girls can continue as Ambassadors and Seniors until they are 18 years old. Founded more than 100 years ago by Juliette Gordon Low in Savannah, Georgia, there are more than 2.3 million
girls who have taken the promise, “On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And, to live by the Girl Scout Law.” Iannone has been a troop leader for five years, but was a parent helper for three years prior to that. She was a Girl Scout through fifth grade. Girls interested in joining Girl Scouts can check with their school or go to the Girl Scout website, www.girlscoutsaz. org to be placed in the right troop. Iannone says most of the girls who join are from word-of-mouth. There is $15 registration fee for the year. “Most troops have additional dues,” Iannone said. “Usually fairly modest.” She mentioned her dues included the uniform, but that depends on the troop.

6 Tips for a Budget-Thankful Thanksgiving mom cents
pasta vixen
As you are preparing your Thanksgiving feast and creating the list of items that you are thankful for, add this: You can celebrate your Thanksgiving feast and enjoy knowing that you didn’t spend a fortune. Check out my simple tips for creating a budget-“thankful” Thanksgiving below. Reuse! Instead of buying disposable plates, napkins, tablecloths or utensils, use what you have on hand. Although you may save time on clean up, you’ll end up spending more money for the convenience. Free Turkey! Many of the grocery stores will run promotions to either get a free turkey or a nice percentage off. You may be required to spend a certain amount of money to get the promotion, but if you look for store deals and photo page

match those with coupons, you’ll have an even better deal while getting all the necessities for your Thanksgiving meal. Shopping List! Make your grocery list before you go to the store to make sure you only buy the items that you need. Match up the items that you plan to buy with store sales and coupons so you don’t overspend. DIY! Use items from nature, such as leaves, pinecones, twigs and pumpkins to make your own festive Thanksgiving decorations. Here are a few ideas: Gather pine

cones in a large vase and add some fresh cinnamon sticks to create a festive decorative piece. Or try the traditional kid’s craft of a handprint turkey to create a family-friendly activity. Potluck! Don’t be embarrassed to ask for help. Involve your dinner guests and ask them to bring their favorite dish, dessert or drink. Not only will this help to cut down on your cost, but it also allows guests to share their own specialties. Consolidate Heat! Heat items up together in the oven after the turkey is done and have everything done at the same time, in less time. If you have a toaster oven, you can try heating up side dishes there as well. Don’t forget the barbecue. Not only can you cook the meat on the grill, but grilled vegetables and bread can also to a nice touch to your Thanksgiving dinner.

Connection Before Correction mom section
I’m reading “Flourish,” Dr. Martin Seligman’s book about how positive psychology impacts our well-being. He references research Eva Dwight that demonstrated the impact of negative language on employees in 60 companies; one-third of which were highly successful, onethird were moderately successful and one-third were failing. Researchers coded language in business meetings as either positive or negative, and results indicated that “companies with better than a 2.9-to-1 ratio for positive-to-negative statements are flourishing.” Companies with a lower ratio were not. Researchers then listened to couples’ conversations over entire weekends, and determined that the same ratio that made companies successful indicated a failing marriage. In fact, the ratio of positive-to-negative statements made between partners needed to be as high as 5-to-1 to maintain a healthy, loving relationship. It’s not a giant leap to go from this necessary ingredient for healthy adult relationships to the need for a high positive-to-negative ratio for conversation between parents and children. I am reminded of an important mantra from the Positive Discipline program: “Connection before correction.” When I work with parents and kids who aren’t getting along, I am struck by the negative words and emotions that fly between them. And I wonder where it started. It really doesn’t matter, though. Once negative language becomes a habit, it’s hard to break. It sounds like backhanded compliments (“Thanks for taking out the trash, for once!”), assigning absolutes (“You always...You never...”) pasta vixen

and looking for ulterior motives in the other person’s behavior (“You just did that/said that so I would ____!”). Breaking the habit of negativity starts with awareness. I love Sean Covey’s analogy in “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens” called the “Relationship Bank Account.” He notes that we make deposits in our RBA when we do something nice for another person, give a genuine compliment, and talk through problems instead of arguing. We make withdrawals with insults, disrespect and demands. Parents can do their own research by keeping a pencil and a sticky note handy throughout the day and making tally marks of positive and negative statements they and their children use. Or, they can really make the research tactile by discussing with their children what constitutes a deposit or withdrawal from the family RBA, and then keep coins or poker chips next to a jar. Whenever someone makes a verbal “withdrawal,” take a chip out. Put one in when someone makes a “deposit.” This can be fun— and eye-opening. Of course, it’s not necessary or possible to be only positive. Researchers reported that a ratio more than 13-to-1 resulted in employee ineffectiveness and decreased credibility. After all, people make mistakes, and correction is necessary to the learning process. When the relationship is solid, though, parents and children can help each other solve problems and support each other in the learning. Connection first creates a foundation of love and trust, so that correction can be accepted and managed by the receiver Eva Dwight is a parent, family and personal coach. By Laurie Struna Mesa Public Schools offers a variety of extracurricular academic activities for students to participate in throughout the year. The teacher-sponsored activities are designed to supplement school curriculum and provide additional opportunities for students to explore academic interests. Students have fun digging deeper into their studies and developing good character traits and leadership skills. Some students find their voices and break out of their shells. They make lifelong friends and learn the art of networking. Ask students what their favorite part of the day is and the answer will be participating in their favorite activities. From the Students’ Perspective For two consecutive years, Tristan Covington, eighth-grade student at Stapley Junior High School, qualified to compete in the Arizona State Geography Bee. The first time he competed as a sixth-grade student, and advocated to bring the competition to his junior high. He shared, “I met with Mr. Erickson, the principal, and inquired if our school could host the National Geographic Bee competition and he was receptive.” When asked how he prepares for the competition, Tristan smiles and answers, “The bee has a lot of variation and covers every aspect of geography. I study for the bee by analyzing maps and atlases, reading various informative books on countries, taking prior National Geographic tests, playing geography games and researching on the Internet.” Tristan admitted he loves to travel
and has had opportunities to see many places, including some foreign countries, with his family. He said, “Actually visiting places helps me to really learn my geography.” Wanted: Students to Participate To find out what activities are available through your school, consult the school website, sign up for school newsfeeds or speak with your student’s favorite teacher. Here are a few upcoming activities. The District Spelling Bee is open to fourth through eighth graders and will be held Saturday, Jan. 24, in the Franklin at Brimhall Auditorium. Check with your school for requirements to compete. Schools registered to participate in the National Geographic Bee will hold their competitions between Nov. 3 and Feb. 6. The state bee will be held March 27 at Arizona State University in the Memorial Union. Mesa Public Schools is once again sponsoring the Martin Luther King Jr. Creative Writing, Art, Multimedia and Oratorical Contest. The art, writing and multimedia contest is for all grade levels, and the oratorical contest is open to fourth through 12th graders. Voices 2015 is the annual district writing contest, sponsored by the curriculum and instruction department. Students in grades kindergarten through 12th and all staff members are invited to submit writing in a variety of categories. The deadline for submitting entries is Friday, Jan. 23. Chocolate chip cookies may be America’s favorite treat for most of the year, but they’re going to have to move over this month—or at least share the stage—with the real star in November, the pumpkin cookie. Ultra moist, simple to make and so wonderful to give as gifts, the pumpkin cookie is the treat, at least in my family, that everyone looks forward to in the fall. I’ve shared with you my two favorite recipes. The first one makes whipping up a batch of these pumpkin delights
super easy because a box of yellow cake mix eliminates a few extra steps. The second recipe adds the beloved chocolate bits into a rich pumpkin batter. The secret to the moistest cookies ever is to let the cookies cool a bit, and then immediately put them in an airtight container. Enjoy a beautiful platter of pumpkin cookies or give them as scrumptious gifts from your kitchen! Let the holiday season officially begin!
Pumpkin Cake Cookies 1 (15 oz.) canned pure pumpkin (Not pumpkin pie mix) 1 egg 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 box yellow cake mix 1/2 cup rolled oats 2 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice (or 1 1/2 teaspoons allspice plus 1 teaspoon cinnamon) 1 cup chopped walnuts 1/2 cup dried cranberries, optional Vanilla or cream cheese frosting, optional
In a large bowl, combine wet ingredients. Add in dry ingredients and mix well. Drop by tablespoons onto lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes. Ice with vanilla or cream cheese frosting if desired. Store in airtight container.

When restaurants change names or owners, there’s always some skepticism. But in the case of Echo 5 Sports Pub, formerly known as O’Neill’s Place, change is good. When we arrived at Echo 5, the parking lot was filled with motorcycleriding veterans from throughout the Valley. I immediately thought that the restaurant would be slammed and overwhelmed. Boy was I wrong. Our service was impeccable and our servers were gracious and accommodating. Famished, three family members and I decided to try the whiskey onion soup ($7). The house-made soup, topped with croutons and cheese, was by far the tastiest in the Northeast Mesa area. The beef broth was flavorful without being salty, and the cheese covering the soup was plentiful. I chose an appetizer as my main course, actually, the teriyaki chicken comm. spotlight

skewers ($9). The four grilled, marinated chicken skewers were juicy and glazed with a teriyaki sauce. They practically fell off the skewers, which were paired delightfully with grilled pineapple and placed on a bed of lettuce. My aunt Valerie went for the Arizona cobb salad ($12), which was a bed of fresh lettuce adorned with grilled chicken, avocado, tomatoes, egg, black olives, bacon, bleu cheese crumbles and croutons. Her meal was more than generous—it was massive. When she finished, it looked like she barely made a dent in her salad. Similar to her sister, my mom tried the chef salad which, for $11, was again plentiful. It had heaping helpings of turkey, jam, tomato, black olives (which she loves), egg and cheddar and jack cheese. She said she ate the leftovers for the night’s dinner and the following day’s lunch. meet your neighbor

My Girlfriend’s Unique Boutique Features Locally Made Products More than 20 years ago, Michelle Tetschner opened a small shop in Mesa. Although she left the business to pursue a 14-year Realtor career, she said she always thought about opening another store. In early October, Tetschner achieved her goal when she opened My Girlfriend’s Unique Boutique in Mesa Groves. “What inspired me to open my store is just that there are so many unique items that are locally made, I wanted to have a brick and mortar store that carries them,” she said. She is committed to working with as many local vendors as possible. “Even my store’s sign was made locally and a lot of my employees are students at Mountain View High School.” Although My Girlfriend’s Unique Boutique has not been open for long, Tetschner said customers are already enjoying her diverse selection of merchandise, which includes grapeand watermelon-scented hairbrushes, handmade jewelry, scarves, items for the home and jalapeno strawberry jam that she said is made by a local man with Down syndrome. “I try to keep things fresh and interesting and carry products that people want to see,” she said. “There’s something for everyone from your best friend to your mom November 2014
and girlfriend.” In addition to working with local vendors, Tetschner said she and her team of employees are striving to offer their customers the best service possible. Her hope is that many will become regular customers, and return repeatedly to My Girlfriend’s Unique Boutique. Tetschner also has strong roots in Mesa. She and her husband, Stacy, and their three boys have lived in the city for more than two decades. Their youngest son attends Highland Elementary School. One of her family’s main interests, Tetschner said, is their involvement with people with special needs. She said she hopes to offer employment opportunities to those with special needs by early next year, and she welcomes suggestions and help on how she can accomplish this. Although Tetschner said it took a lot of time and hard work getting My Girlfriend’s Unique Boutique ready to open, it was all definitely worth it. “Everything has just fallen into place along the way. I feel like it was just meant to be.” My Girlfriend’s Unique Boutique is located at 1325 N. Greenfield Rd. in Mesa. Can We Ever Trust An Anonymous Tip? law talk
meet your neighbor
As a seasoned Arizona criminal defense attorney, I have learned that deceit often lurks behind anonymity. I think Fezzik said Brian D. Strong it best in the movie, “The Princess Bride,” when he told Inigo Montoya to be careful in his dealings with the “Man in Black” because, “People in masks cannot be trusted.” The Sixth Amendment affords us the right to confront our accusers because convictions should be based on trustworthy testimony. The language of the Arizona Constitution is even more precise by giving every accused the right “to meet the witnesses against him [or her] face to face,” without a mask. (Ariz. Const. Art. II, § 24.) Given these constitutional mandates, one would think that anonymous, hearsay testimony should rarely find its way into our criminal courts. Yet with the advent of cellphones, the frequency of anonymous statements being used as evidence has increased dramatically. As a result, federal and state courts have struggled to define exactly what types of anonymous tips are permissible and which are not. The law does not require police officers to know everything upfront. Brief “investigative stops” are legal when there is “a particularized and objective basis for suspecting” criminal activity. (United States v. Cortez, 449 U.S. 411, 417-419 (1981)). For example, a police officer may suspect that a certain driver is intoxicated but probable cause for an arrest will not exist until the vehicle biz box

has been stopped and a face to face interview is complete. Reasonable suspicion to justify an initial stop can be based on • The officer’s own observations; • The comments of a known citizen • An anonymous tip. The observations of police officers and known citizens are always subject to cross-examination and can, therefore, be tested for credibility. Yet, I have never once had the pleasure of cross-examining Mr. or Ms. Anonymous. The general rule is that anonymous tips that are “contemporaneous” in time and contain some “indicia of reliability” will justify an investigative stop. Contemporaneous in time is an easy legal standard to understand. Deciding exactly what creates an “indicia of reliability” has been the equivalent of a judicial quagmire. There are literally hundreds of conflicting appellate decisions on this subject. In many of those decisions, the judges themselves could not agree and written dissenting opinions are commonplace. Given the complex legal factors involved, if you or a loved one is ever arrested because of an anonymous tip, please call our office at (480) 833-1113 immediately.
