Meza named new police chief comm. spotlight

John Meza, a former Mesa assistant police chief, has been tapped to head up the department. He has been with the City of Mesa for more than 28 years. Meza was appointed interim police chief on Feb. 2, replacing Chief Frank Milstead, whom Gov. Doug Ducey selected as director of public safety. Hired in 1986, Meza served as an assistant chief for seven years, most recently overseeing the Operations Bureau, and three years as commander over the Central Command. He served as a lieutenant for six years and a sergeant for seven years. “John has shown tremendous leadership ability, not only in his short classifieds

Rolfs helps MCC celebrate 50 years
Before Spring Break, the Poston Junior High Student Council held its annual dodgeball tournament in conjunction with a “bubble drive” for the Child Crisis Center. Homerooms competed to see which class could collect the largest amount of bubbles during the week leading up to the tournament. That Friday, the tournament was held with 18 participating teams in a double-elimination tournament bracket. Spectators could either pay at the door or donate a jar of bubbles as their entry fee. Poston collected more than 44 gallons of bubbles and will donate $200 collected from the admission charge to Child Crisis Center.

Beauty is selfconfidence. Beauty is giving back.” Rolfs, which has a Rolfs Euro Salon location at Village Square at Dana Park in East Mesa, was a premier sponsor for MCC’s 50th anniversary. The celebration attracted about 420 guests and more than 50 of them came from elsewhere in the United States, she said. Three former MCC presidents attended the event, according to Tesmer. The salon and the school’s attitudes reflect what Rolfs’ management team believes. Rolfs’ employees are heavily involved in the community. Throughout the company’s 27 years, Rolfs has sponsored more than 6,000 organizations in Arizona with Tesmer serving on the board of major organiza-
tions, including the Arizona Coalition Against Domestic Violence. “The most important thing is we believe, as a brand, in intelligent beauty versus superficial beauty,” she said. “We look at every client and we want to match their outer beauty with their inner beauty. “Nobody needs to look like movie stars or anyone else in this world—just themselves. We believe that beauty is brain deep. Beauty is education deep. Beauty is being involved in your community and giving back.” Tesmer said Rolfs is expanding its belief system as well as its business. It also created a new concept, “a very, very European concept,” thanks to her and Rolf Lohse’s heritage. “In today’s world, people want luxury. They want value. They want great things. They want or can’t pay a ton of money for it. So how do you bring luxury and quality things to masses of people? We want every woman to have access to luxury, not just the top 3 or 10 percent.”

Vacation Bible School ‘travels’ to Thailand By Jasmine Couillard First Presbyterian Church of Mesa is hosting a summer Vacation Bible School program the week of June 8. This year’s theme is Thailand Trek, during which children travel through field-tested rotations that reinforce relevant Bible points. They will sample Thai snacks and enjoy a light dinner each night. Students will also have the opportunity to: • Meet children from another country who love Jesus on video. • Explore Thailand through games, snacks and cultural experiences. • Share the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the culture with kids in the community and help them discover God’s eternal love for the world. Church officials aim to expand kids’ view of God’s love for them—and the world—with hopes that kids will become faith-filled children who understand the power of Jesus’ love in a diverse world. By Alison Stanton Many moms and grandmas will gather with their families on Sunday, May 10, to celebrate Mother’s Day. As far as Dixie Lidia, Stefanie Tavares and Brittney Hay are concerned, every day is Mother’s Day. Lidia, her daughter, Tavares, and granddaughter, Hay, all work at Pioneer Title Agency in Mesa, marking three generations of employees. They wouldn’t have it any other way. Lidia, a senior escrow officer, was

the first of the trio to start working at Pioneer Title Agency. A short time later, Tavares came on board as branch manager and senior escrow officer. “I told Stefanie, ‘Why don’t you manage and I’ll work with you and support you?’” Lidia said. Tavares agreed to the idea. “I told her, ‘OK then, with your backing I’ll do it.’ I knew I could conquer anything with her help,” Tavares said. About three years ago, Hay joined
her mom and grandma at Pioneer Title Agency; she works as an assistant escrow officer. “I had kind of bounced along at different jobs because I had a lot of interests, and then my mom called and said she knew I was doing my own thing and was happy, but she asked me to come on board,” Hay said. “I’m so glad that I did. I’ve never been at a job this long, and I love the people I work for, and the three of us

love being together every day, and we work together really well.” Their clients have peace of mind knowing that they’re working with three hard-working women, Hay said. “It helps them feel really secure; for example, in other places if someone goes on vacation their files will be shuffled around. Knowing that her mom is planning on retiring next year is already creating some angst for Tavares. “She’s always the strong one. Dixie is very humble and is one of the nicest people you will ever meet, and I will get teary eyed if I don’t see her every day,” Tavares said. Step 1 If you’re like me, you have a lot of nail polish in a lot of colors and some just aren’t fun to wear anymore. Luckily, they make great enamel for this project and lend themselves to some very colorful designs. Aside from the usual solid blocks of color, my girls and I experimented with different techniques to make the paint mix together. We found that if the polish was applied thickly and then corresponding colors were dropped on top, the paint would start to mix together and make some really neat mosaic designs. We also found that we could take this approach one step further and after the colors had been applied, take a toothpick and swirl the polish together for a marbled finish. Another idea would be to apply small rhinestones to the wet polish for a more blingy approach to these keychains. Step 2 It’s important to let the washers dry for at least 24 hours or else the paint could get smudged during assembly. Once the paint is dry, turn over the largest washer and use either puff paint or a permanent marker to write your holiday greetings to the gift recipient: “Happy Mother’s Day, Love Sara” for example.

Step 3 The final step is as simple as loading the keyring the same way you would put a key on a keychain. I started with the largest of the washers and used it to prop open the keyring so as to avoid scratching the polish. I layered other washers on top of the largest one and then curled them all on at the same time. The washers make a pretty belllike sound when they knock together, which I call an added bonus. I was speaking with a wise 14-year-old the other day. He was frustrated with his parents because they always want to know what’s going on with Eva Dwight him and when he says, “I don’t know,” they get angry. “They think I’m lying or trying to avoid telling them something, but the truth is, half the time I don’t know what’s going on with me so how could I possibly tell them? I can’t even tell myself.” As a professional who works with kids, and as a parent, I understand being on the receiving end of “I don’t know.” I want to help, and those words seem like a brick wall that I have to break through. A little self-examination, however, reveals that I don’t always know what’s going on with me, pasta vixen

either. I’m in a bad mood today. Does there have to be a reason? I made a mistake that caused someone else to be inconvenienced. Was I trying to be bad? I drove recklessly through the construction zone. Was I not thinking of consequences of my behavior? We want our children to act in ways that will serve them best, to correct and not repeat their mistakes. And it all appears so easy from the outside looking in. “If you would just...,” we exclaim with exasperation. But what if the tables were turned? What if our kids shook their fingers at us and said, “Why did you do that? You need to tell me!” I wonder how many times we’d answer, “I
don’t know.” And be telling the truth. I asked the 14-year-old what advice he would give to parents and he had several suggestions: Give your kid time to think about it. Agree on a time later that day or the next, to come back together and talk about what happened and why. If the kid still doesn’t know, go for a solution-based discussion. Frequently, why we did something matters less than how we’re going to make amends or avoid repeating that mistake. Using questions that start with “what” and “how” can help you and your child move forward. What

is the problem? How did it happen? How can you/we solve it now? How can you/we keep it from happening again? Don’t be afraid to make silly suggestions when brainstorming for solutions. Silliness can relax us and help us generate creativity. Also, be ready to help your kid follow through with the solution for an agreed-upon period of time and then come back together to check in on how effective it was. Kids often don’t have great follow-through skills (neither do a lot of adults!) so this needs to be a team effort. Finally, don’t take it personally when your kid says, “I don’t know.” Keep your relationship strong by demonstrating understanding that life can be really confusing sometimes, and allow “I don’t know” to lead you and your child to connection instead of anger and brick walls. Boe ing Boe ing Palms Theatre announces lineup for 15th season The Palms Theatre will open a milestone 15th season of entertainment in the Valley with six Main Stage Musicals, four Marquee Comedies, Children’s Theatre and a lineup of concerts in 2015 and 2016. “We listened to the requests of our guests and combed through the theater’s history to present one of the most dynamic, fun and exciting series the East Valley has ever seen,” said Robert Shaw, The Palm Theatre’s CEO and executive producer. The fun begins this fall on The Palms’ Main Stage as guests get back in the habit with “Nunsense.” The holiday season will be ushered in with the premier of a new Yuletide production, “Happy Holidays! A Heartwarming Christmas Revue Featuring the Music of Irving Berlin.” Following the New Year, The Palms will roll the dice on “Guys and Dolls,” followed by a visit to “Church Basement Ladies.” For the first time on The Palms Theatre stage, springtime will have guests bopping through the halls of Rydell High with “Grease.” Finally, The Palms rounds out its Main Stage productions with “Ring of Fire,” the revived Broadway musical celebrating the life and songs of Johnny Cash. Pink Grapefruit Pound Cake Delicious, juicy pink grapefruit is in season from October through May, so this is a great month to try a sweet treat with a sensational citrus twist— the Pink Grapefruit Pound Cake. First about the cake. It really should have been called a 4-pound cake, because back in the 1700s, when someone baked up this invention, the original pound cake called for 1 pound each of butter, sugar, eggs and flour. Since then, the pound cake has slimmed down in ingredients and in size, and fresh citrus is often added to the basic mixture. While lemon is the darling of citrus when it comes to desserts, there is a sweet alternative in abundance right now in your store’s produce department. Pink grapefruit is juicy, sweet, inexpensive and large, which is why this recipe for
Pink Grapefruit Pound Cake is so perfect. While you’re enjoying the juicy fruit inside as a snack, the outside skin can be zested and blended into a moist, rich and dense cake. Then, you’ll take a few wedges, juice them up and add that to powdered sugar for a zesty citrus drizzle over top of the cake. I made one big mistake on my first go-around. I got a bit of the white pith under the outer skin in my zesting and it made my cake slightly bitter, so make sure that you grate only the pink peel. You can drizzle as much or as little of the icing as you like. Just double the icing ingredients for more sweetness on top. The second mistake I made was cutting into the cake before it cooled and set up. Patience has never been my virtue, but in this case waiting a bit promises the perfect slices.

Pink Grapefruit Pound Cake 1/2 cup (8 tablespoons) butter 1 small package (8 ounce) cream cheese 2 cups sugar 3 large eggs 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1 heaping tablespoon grapefruit rind (pink skin only, no white pith) 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 cup milk or cream 2 cups flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt Icing: 2 tablespoons grapefruit juice, strained 1 cups powdered sugar
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Butter a 9-by-5 inch loaf pan or a 9-inch spring form round pan. In a mixing bowl combine butter, cream cheese and sugar. Beat on high until light and fluff y. Add eggs, one at a time, blending after each addition. Add oil, grapefruit rind, vanilla and milk or cream, mixing well. In a separate bowl, mix together flour, baking powder and salt. Slowly add to wet May 2015
mixture, just to combine. Pour into baking pan and cook for 1 hour or until toothpick comes up clean. Do not overbake. Let cake cool for 15 minutes. Meanwhile make icing. In a medium bowl, combine grapefruit juice and powdered sugar, mixing well. If too thick, add more grapefruit juice, drops at a time. Transfer cooled cake to serving plate and drizzle with icing. Can be stored in refrigerator or at room temperature, wrapped well in plastic wrap, for several days.

Buying insurance isn’t a “one-sizefits-all” chore. Customers must be mindful of the qualifications of the insurance counselors and advisers who sell the policies. “They need to know who they are doing business with,” said Kent Stewart, owner of Insurance Professionals of Arizona. “Not all insurers are created equal. They need to find the carrier who happens to fit in their mold.” Stewart, who operates his office in his hometown of Mesa, said he believes his company is a cut above the other insurance companies because he is a certified insurance counselor.
