5 Tips to Save on Clothing, Shoes pasta vixen

mom cents

Have you noticed all the back-toschool deals already? Hopefully you are taking advantage of the school supply deals at many of the office supply and drugstores around town! As you start to shop for new clothes, shoes and accessories, don’t forget that there are many ways to save in that area, too. Here are some tips for you: 1. Take inventory of what can be reused for the school year. Check your child’s wardrobe to make sure you know what is needed and, more importantly, what isn’t, so you don’t spend on unnecessary items. 2. Shop second-hand shops. Thrift shops, consignment stores and even yard sales can have hidden gems at great prices. To find the best selection, shop early in the season, stop by often, and don’t be afraid to try new places around the Valley. Tip: Check the donation policy at local thrift shops or consignment photo page

stores. They may offer coupons or higher discounts to shop in their store when you use store credit. 3. Host a clothing exchange. Make a party out of it and ask people to bring their gently used clothing to exchange. Divide up the clothes by gender and size and let each person shop for their new attire. Each person gives away clothes that don’t fit and gets to pick up new ones. After everyone has made their picks, donate or sell clothes that are left over. 4. Shop outside the uniform shop. Many retailers offer uniform basics for half the cost of the uniform shops.

You can use sales and coupons to save even more. Some of the stores that carry uniform basics include Old Navy, Kohl’s, Walmart, Target, Sears and more. Shop early and buy ahead because these items can be in limited supply in store and they don’t always stock them throughout the year. 5. Skip the stores and shop online. Find coupon codes (RetailMeNot. com is a great resource) and use cash back incentives with sites like Ebates. com to help you save. Amazon also carries plenty of school clothes, shoes and uniform basics, plus, shipping is free with a purchase of $25 or more. Other retail stores also carry more choices and inventory online, so if you can’t find what you want in the store, make sure if it is carried online.

Experts suggest that parents help their children select classes appropriate to their interests instead of choosing courses that their friends have also signed up for.

and information on identification cards, class fees, sports and club information and lunch schedules is yet another proactive approach Cook mentioned for parents and students. Parents can also ensure students have the necessary school supplies for students including backpack, pens and pencils. Some classes may require additional supplies specific to the class, such as a calculator or graph paper. “Pull up the website for the class they’re going to be in and it’ll tell them what they need,” Cook said. The parent and student portal is maintained from junior high to high school and Cook said parents and students should log on to that. “We want them to do that so they can monitor all the things about their classes as school gets going,” Cook said. “Everything from grades, to attendance to class assignments.” “We really want parents to trust the school procedure,” Cook said. He explained some parents are nervous about their child coming to high school for the first time and want to walk them to class on the first day. He doesn’t suggest parents accompany their student or follow them to class. “We want them (parents) to trust what we do and the procedures we have in place.” After school starts, Cook said parents should attend the school’s open house. “Parents will get a sense of what it’s like to be a student in a teacher’s particular class,” Cook said. When students have their schedule, Cook mentioned parents should record teachers’ names and email addresses and then monitor school work and talk to teachers to avoid surprises when grades come out.

If a student isn’t sure about an assignment Cook said he should be proactive and talk to the teacher. “Students need to advocate for themselves. If they’re not sure about something raise their hand.” Staying after class is another option for students who feel shy about raising their hand in class. He continued, “We need them to advocate for themselves so if we can have parents encourage students to do that it would be great.” Cook explained that class schedules are difficult to change after school begins so students really need to give the class they picked a chance. “We want parents to encourage their student to stay with the classes they selected unless there’s a major reason to change,” he said. This goes back to being proactive and helping choose classes. Parents should also be aware of district policies, which can usually be found online or in the student handbook, and familiarize themselves with dress code, attendance and expectations for students. Policies do change from elementary to junior high to high school and students and parents should have a reasonable understanding of the rules. Managing the move to another school doesn’t need to be tedious and parents and students who communicate and are informed can ease the transition to start the new school year off on a positive note. Is Your Child Kindergarten Ready? By Tracy House Preparing your child for kindergarten is one of the most important steps a parent can take in a child’s education. That first year is the foundation for learning and ensuring your child is ready for the social, emotional and academic challenges of kindergarten is important to his or her education. Children who have been in a quality preschool program benefit greatly from the experience and the basic skills acquired transfer to kindergarten and beyond. Janice Herron, director of Love of Christ Preschool in Mesa, said, “The kindergarten of today is like first grade was just 10 years ago. It’s so much faster paced that if you don’t want your child playing catch up then you need to give them a good head start and a quality preschool gives them that. Not just academically, it gives them that start socially and emotionally. They know what the concept of a school is.” Herron said a well-rounded August 2013

program will address all the aspects of school. Children who attend a quality preschool program have stronger pre-reading skills, larger vocabularies and sound mathematics base. They acquire thinking skills and develop selfawareness and socialization skills. When you’re looking for a quality preschool, Herron suggested interviewing the director. Find out what the student teacher ratio is, the credentials and experience of the teacher, what is stressed in the program, ask what a typical day looks like in the classroom, if the center is licensed and what security measures are in place. Providing your child with a sound educational foundation can give him the building blocks to master kindergarten and be successful in school. Love of Christ Preschool is located at 1525 N. Power Rd., Mesa. For information about their program call (480) 981-6199 or email janiceherron@ loclc.org.

Sometimes, when I am dispensing some of my hard-earned wisdom to one of my children, I start to see their eyes glaze over and I realize that I probably sound like a Charlie Brown adult. One of the tools in my parenting toolbox is “Ask, don’t tell.” I’m good at using it in my work with other people’s teens, but I somehow manage to leave it at the door when I put on my “mom” hat. In the short run, it’s expedient to tell my son to do this, that or the other thing. But we don’t have very good conversations when I’m being expedient. So in the long run, he’s not getting the opportunity pasta vixen

monthly meeting

to plan and problem solve—skills he will need out there in the world. Rather than telling him what to do and expecting him to follow my directions like a good little robot, what I really need to teach him is how to think and how to plan. In order to do that, I need to ask him—not tell him. As he has been learning to drive, I’ve tried to remind myself to ask, “What is the speed limit here?” “What do you see up ahead?” “What did you learn from X experience?” Obviously, there are important times for me to scream, “Stop! Car!” But if I’m doing my job of paying attention and teaching, I will anticipate what he needs to know and ask him questions so he can process the answers for himself and learn the thinking skills needed to be a good driver. As I allow him more freedom to make his own decisions, I have

gotten better at asking pertinent questions—“When do you need to leave so you’re in the band room on time?” “How do you need to arrange your time so you are able to ___?”—rather than figuring out his schedule and telling him what to do and when to do it, which is what I have done probably too much over the years. Try this challenge: Spend one day noticing every time you tell your child what to do. The next day, every time you have the urge to tell, find a way to ask instead. Questions should be open-ended, so kids can’t just answer “yes” or “no.” Notice what differences you see over time in your conversation patterns and your child’s thinking process. He may still need

your help with follow through, but you’ll likely get more buy-in because he helped create the plan. Taking the time to ask—and listen—is more work on our part as parents, but growing skills is important to our kids’ big picture...and we will be less likely to hear ourselves in a Charlie Brown special!

By Laurie Struna, Mesa Public Schools This is an exciting time in education and, with the start of a new school year, Mesa Public Schools is leading the charge as a 21st century powerhouse of learning. To better serve the community, MPS efficiently and effectively improves educational standards, embraces technology and adapts to changing needs. Preschool Offerings Now, more than ever, early childhood education is a critical component in long-term student success. The district is adding preschool locations and programs to serve our youngest learners. The new Jordan Center for Early Education serves West Mesa. Expanded programming includes our Prekindergarten Plus, which features flexible hours between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., at Red Mountain Ranch Elementary on the East side. Tot Wallace, community education director, believes that Mesa Public Schools provides the best start for early learners, and that the additional offerings will enable more children to excel. From half-day preschool to full-day Prekindergarten Plus, MPS meets the needs of parents and children at our early education centers and numerous schools throughout the district. For registration information, visit www.mpsaz.org/preschool, or call (480)-472-7250. creativity and critical thinking. Education to meet these needs takes center stage at the new Eisenhower Center for Innovation. Redesigned instructional programs will inspire students and teachers to work together using innovative approaches to teaching and learning. Principal Tracy Yslas and her staff look forward to helping parents become familiar with the technology their children will be using during the school year. STEM Diploma MPS is continuing its legacy of unprecedented excellence in education by offering high school students a unique opportunity to earn a new Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Diploma at Red Mountain High School. The program is designed to help highly motivated students be proactive, prepared and positioned for the colleges best suited to their career plans. It features a blend of accelerated courses that follow Cambridge Curriculum and Arizona’s Common Core Standards, Advanced Placement courses and career and technical education courses. Students also benefit from projectbased learning and partnerships with STEM industries for real-world career experiences. This accelerated course of study is open to all ninth-graders. Openenrollment students are welcome. For more information, call Catherine McDaniel, assistant principal for instruction and academic support, at (480) 472-8087.

Mesa Arts Center Announces 2013-2014 Season Mesa Arts Center’s Performing Live Series for 2013-14 brings a variety of unique experiences for music and theater enthusiasts, as well as dinner and show packages. Also, a new partnership is in place that will allow MAC season ticket holders and patrons to enjoy select shows at the Mesa Amphitheatre and Hohokam Stadium. The 2013-2014 Performing Live Series at the Mesa Arts Center kicked off on July 16 with renowned guitarists Rodrigo y Gabriela hitting the stage. This summer continues with concerts by The Monkees, Lyle Lovett & His Large Band and Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club at the MAC’s Ikeda Theater. The Avett Brothers start fall with a performance at the Mesa Amphitheatre in early October, with the rest of 2013 highlighted by Alton Brown, Vince Gill, The Boston Pops, Dave Koz and more. Through late 2013 and into 2014, the MAC will host Paula Poundstone, Audra McDonald, Tommy Emanuel and Renée Fleming, to name just a few. During the season, additional performers will be announced. Pre-show dinner and drink packages are available for The Monkees on Aug.

9, Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club on Sept. 15, and Vince Gill on Oct. 24. This year, the Mesa Arts Center will continue to offer specially priced ticket packages for a Family Series, Jazz Series, National Geographic Live Speaker Series and Classical Icon Series. These packages save ticket buyers 33 percent or more. The popular Shop Mesa, Get the Arts program is also back, giving “Mesa Bucks” for sales tax toward “buy one get one” tickets to selected Performing Live Series shows when consumers shop in Mesa and turn in receipts to the MAC box office. “We have scheduled a strong, wellrounded performance line up this season with artists that are impacting our lives and the direction of the arts nationally,” said Cindy Ornstein, executive director at the Mesa Arts Center. “Contributing members will get the first opportunity to purchase show tickets and receive other discounts, and we encourage everybody else in our community to consider the benefits of membership to enjoy everything that the Mesa Arts Center has to offer this season and beyond.” For more information, call the box office at (480) 644-6500 or visit www. Barrett Tillman cultivated an early interest in aviation. His father was a World War II pilot, and his family even had a grass airstrip on their wheat and cattle ranch in Oregon. Tillman, who now lives in Mesa, took that love of aviation and used it as the focus of his writing career. “It’s not the sort of thing that I set out to accomplish intentionally,” he said. “My interest in writing and flying merged fairly early.” The author learned how to fly in high school and subsequently earned his journalism degree from the University of Oregon in 1971. “I stayed on the ranch in northeastern Oregon and worked there seasonally, but for the rest of the year, I was pretty much free to do as I chose,” Tillman said. There began his journey in writing articles for aviation magazines. “I could travel somewhat to do research and interviews.” His first novel was inspired by an antique airplane that his father and friends acquired in 1971. They restored the historic World War II airplane, a Douglas SBD-5 dive bomber, for a Navy N3N-3 biplane trainer. In 1976, Tillman’s first novel was published, “The Dauntless Dive Bomber of WWII.” “That book is still in print 37 years later,” he said. He is now seven fiction works deep into his career. “Over the years, I became acquainted with military aviators and air crew,” Tillman explained. “One book led to another.” As a Baby Boomer, Tillman says he grew up in the generation of war. Because it was a common focal point for the community, it provided him with the advantage of personally getting to know folks, as well as flying some of the Navy aircraft. “It’s rare for so many people to have the human and technical background,” he said. His latest novel, “Enterprise: America’s Fightingest Ship and the Men Who Helped Win World War II,” was published in March 2012. The idea for the book came from friendships he August 2013

A Partnership of Experience and Value This year, for the first time, Lovin’ Life After 50 and East Valley Adult Resources have joined forces in a partnership designed to bring additional value to companies and organizations with a need to reach the East Valley’s after-50 market. Together, these two organizations will host the 2013 Healthy Living Expo on November 21 at the Mesa Convention Center.

formed with a couple dozen enterprise veterans. Their recollection, combined with official records from the Navy, provided Tillman with the opportunity to write an in-depth piece on the ship that carried 3,000 men on board. “Unfortunately when that book was published a little over a year ago, more than half of the contributors were already deceased,” he explained. “It reminds me that history is imperishable and has a shelf life.” He learned that he cannot assume that sources today will be there tomorrow. The history of the Army 15th Air Force in Italy during World War II is the topic of Tillman’s next book, which was recently delivered to Regnery Publishing. It is expected to hit stores in May 2014. “I am fortunate to have access to people who were there,” he said of the worst winter in Italy in documented history. In addition to his novels, Tillman submits articles to The Hook, and is also a contributing editor for the bimonthly publication Flight Journal. Pacino’s Italian Restaurant Every once in a while a new restaurant opens in the Valley that instantly and effortlessly creates its own fan base. Pacino’s Italian Restaurant is that place. This is not a typical spaghetti-and-meatballs type of Italian establishment (although Sunday night features the best lasagna and spaghetti and meatballs anywhere). Owner Frank Spaccarelli has created a unique restaurant built around the theme of Oscar-winning actor Al Pacino and the eatery features many images from Pacino’s iconic films. “This is more of a light contemporary Italian,” explained Spaccarelli of the Pacino’s menu. “But, I can still make a mean pizza; that’s my art.” First, we must address the ciabatta bread that is served as an appetizer. Sheer perfection. The bread comes from Breadsmith, which is located comm. spotlight

next door to Pacino’s. This particular ciabatta bread is just slightly crunchy on the outside, softer than one might expect on the inside and dusted with olive oil and parmesan cheese and served a side of Queen Creek Olive Mill olives. Try it without balsamic vinegar first to appreciate the flavors, but be careful not to fill up on too much of this sinful bread, because the entrees will blow your socks off and you’ll want to save room. Be sure to not miss the gnocchi made with homemade ricotta cheese and gorgonzola. The tender exterior is melt-in-your-mouth perfect and among the most flavorful gnocchi in the Valley. The three executive chefs at Pacino’s are Italian and orchestrate the menu with traditional Italian flavors and new and creative menu ingredients. his isn’t baseball. It’s a good thing, because Americans have had two strikes against us this year, and it’s only August. Unlike baseball, it will take more than 3 strikes to take us out, but (also, unlike baseball) each strike does indeed take it’s toll.

Strike 1: On January 7 the EPA notified Refrigerant manufacturers that they must REDUCE THE AMOUNT of R-22 production to only 72% of 2012 amounts. This accelerated phase out caused an immediate jump in R-22 prices by over 200% We are now paying 300% more for R-22 Refrigerant than we were paying in 2011.† Strike 2: Today the EPA has received notice to make new rules having to do with Coal Fired Power Plants, new and existing. They have also been ordered to make more stringent rules concerning the Key-Stone Pipe Line. Many economists believe todays announcement will result in much higher electric rates across the board, resulting in accelerated inflation. The Good News: The Federal Government has been trying for some time to help us use less electricity. A tax credit is still on the table; up to $450 for qualifying equipment and parties. More Good News: Utilities have long been promoters of energy reducing a/c systems. Both APS and SRP programs change from time to time, but right now SRP is offering up to $400 and APS is offering $270 to customers who purchase qualifying systems. Almost Best News: Lennox has a Summer Promo going on: Up to $1,700 rebate for qualifying energy reducing equipment!

I know it’s hard to replace a working system— I’ve done it. Before I did the job, running my old system I counted how many times the electric meter revolved in 1 minute (11 times). Then, after installing my new system I set it on low stage, where it runs about 90% of the time, and counted revolutions. I didn’t think my a/c was running, but it was! 5.5 times per minute compared to 11 before! Nobody knows what will happen in the future with electric rates or inflation in general. I certainly don’t. But I do know that either way I want to be as efficient as possible; that only makes sense. R-22 has been the staple of air-conditioning refrigerant since the 1950’s. Due to the Montreal Protocol Agreement in 1987, R-22 has been on a scheduled production phase out. The point made in this letter is that the EPA has twice now, without warning, accelerated the scheduled reduction amount, resulting in unexpected price increases due to supply and demand.

Pasta and the Sea pasta vixen

Summers in Arizona beckon us to the sea, so when Dr. Love and I had a chance to set sail to San Diego Bay for a threehour tour, we made like Gilligan and Mary Ann and hopped on board. Salt air, cool breezes, views of shell-filled beaches and Conch shells make very effective horns when the top the company of good friends is cut off. King Triton is said to have used a conch made it a perfect day. So when horn and is depicted holding one in Roman art. 16-24 jumbo pasta shells 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil 1 package of frozen chopped spinach 1 cloves garlic, finely chopped 2 1/2 cups of whole milk ricotta cheese (Not skim milk ricotta, don’t question the Italian Nonna) 1/2 cup Monterey Jack cheese, grated 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese, grated 1/2 cup grated ParmigianoReggiano cheese 1 tablespoon chopped basil 3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley Ground nutmeg, to taste Pinch of oregano 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 cups of your favorite marinara sauce

Directions Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add pasta shells and cook until al dente, about 10 minutes. Drain well, then toss with oil in a large bowl; set aside. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cook spinach as directed on box and drain well, then cool enough to handle, squeeze to remove any excess water. Transfer to a large bowl. Add garlic, ricotta, grated cheeses, nutmeg, salt and herbs to make the filling. (The filling can be made the night before allowing flavors to blend.) Spread a few spoonfuls of marinara sauce in the bottom of a 9x12 shallow baking dish large enough to hold the

shells in a single layer. Fill each shell with spinach mixture and arrange in the dish. Pour remaining sauce over and around the stuffed shells and top with additional fresh grated Parmigiano-Reggiano. Cover with foil and bake until hot throughout, 20 to 30 minutes, then uncover and continue baking until golden brown (you can sprinkle with more mozzarella cheese at this point if you like), about 10 minutes more. Garnish with some fresh chopped parsley and serve! It’s not just us crazy myth-loving Italians who believe in the power of the conch. Buddha’s followers believe its sound can awaken a person from ignorance. Not sure if this is true but I do know the smell wafting from your oven will certainly awaken your appetite. Now, put down your conch shell and try them. “Sea?”...I told you, one bite makes you want to blow on that conch and frighten the giants away so you can have them all to yourself.

As a first-generation American, Brenda Laufer grew up in an Italian home where ravioli were made by the hundreds and cooking pasta was a sacred event. That passion continues when she creates in her kitchen, where she loves entertaining family and friends. She and her pasta-loving husband, Robert, have four children and one grandson and have lived in Mesa for more than 20 years. Buon Appetito! Contact the Pasta Vixen at Pastavixen@hotmail.com.

The WORKOUT You’ve Always Wanted!

Rising Home Prices and Low Interest Rates—Time to Sell and Time to Buy comm. spotlight

law talk

hearsay

For many years now, cash investors have been purchasing numerous distressed and undervalued properties in our local real estate market. As home prices continue to rise and the economy continues to improve, investor influence will diminish. Investors purchase undervalued homes, which are frequently vacant and in poor condition. They will then remodel the home and turn around and sell or rent it, which attracts occupants. This creates the restoration of the neighborhood and prices begin to rise. One year or so of continuous rising prices inspires buyers and sellers with confidence that the bottom of the real estate market has been reached and it is time to dive in. As we see that viewpoint continue to unfold, we will also continue to see more traditional buyers in the market. These traditional buyers will essentially pick up where investors left off. For buyers who will be obtaining a new loan, the good news is that interest rates are still low at this time. Simultaneously, as the economy recovers and hiring increases, housing demand strengthens. The rising rental classifieds

rates and high rental occupancy are encouraging renters to move on to home ownership. In addition, as home prices rise, owners who were without enough equity in their homes to pay off the mortgage will emerge and begin selling their existing homes and buying others. The distressed properties are still adding to the supply of homes, although the number of foreclosures nationwide are expected to continue to decline in 2013. This is partly due to lenders realizing that they lose less money on short sales than on foreclosures. It is also due to the recovery of the economy and more homeowners can afford to pay their mortgage and avoid foreclosure. We feel confident that the real estate market will continue to improve in the second half of 2013. Our knowledge of the real estate market and dedication to our clients contributes to our combined 55 years of success. Is Disability Income Insurance Right for You? financially speaking

Most people will agree that homeowner, auto and life insurance are requisite components of a comprehensive financial plan. But disability income insurance is often overlooked. Depending on your personal situation, the income protection disability income insurance offers could provide valuable benefits. According to the Social Security Administration, a 20-year-old worker has a 3-in-10 chance of becoming disabled before reaching retirement age. The majority of long-term disabilities are caused by illnesses such as cancer and heart disease rather than accidents. While it is commonplace to purchase life insurance to cover mortgage and other expenses in the event of death, the odds of mortgage foreclosure due to disability are actually 16 times greater than the risk of foreclosure due to death. Long-term disability insurance is often offered through corporate employee benefit programs, however, according to LIMRA (Life Insurance Management Research Association), the percentage of companies that pay for some or all of the long-term disability premiums is now below 50 percent, and the majority of group plans will typically only replace up to 60 percent of salary with a capped annual amount (most often $60,000 per year). Benefits are paid for a set number of years, or until the recipe corner

subscriber is able to return to work. For highly compensated individuals seeking a higher annual payout or for the self-employed, the impetus to consider an individual disability income policy could be more pressing as they may need to tap into savings and investments immediately should a health crisis develop. Some experts suggest that even if your employer offers a long-term disability option, choosing to opt out (if allowed) and purchase an individual policy that meets your specific needs could be more beneficial. An individual policy is portable, and the subscriber establishes a direct relationship with the insurance company, which could prove meaningful in the event a claim is denied.

Making the Right Decision Choosing to purchase an individual disability income policy will depend on an analysis of your personal financial situation and likely be based on questions such as: 1.In the event of a health crisis, what financial resources would you draw upon to replace your income and maintain payment of mortgages, monthly bills, tuition and other essential expenses? 2.Are there other wage earners in your family who would be able to assume financial responsibility until you are on your feet? 3.If you are self-employed, would an income interruption threaten the success or survival of your business? 4.If employed and your employer offers a long-term disability plan, would it provide the level of benefits you would require? 5.Would you prefer the security of an individual plan that is portable and includes the terms and riders you select? The decision to purchase an individual disability income insurance policy is complex. Contact your trusted financial adviser to explore the pros and cons in greater detail. Kimber Academy financially speaking

pasta vixen

Teaching Principles of God, Family and Country Nancy Genys has been on a mission to create a stimulating, challenging and inspiring curriculum for a school of her own for years. She came close to starting a school on seven different occasions. After reviewing curriculum models throughout the United States and having long conversations with school owners, she knew she was ready. Then life threw her a curve ball with the deaths of two of her children in less than three years. That put the school on hold. A year and a half ago she finally came upon Kimber Academy and knew she had found exactly what she wanted—and the timing was right. The dream of opening her school became a reality this year. “I wanted something that would provide the best academics possible for my two young children,” Genys said. “I knew this was it. I am very close to God so I loved that Kimber curriculum incorporates my Scriptures of choice in their academic application as they do for all children at the school.” The school uses a trio of principles revolving around God, family and country as its benchmark. The school offers education for students age preschool through 12th grades and elective classes that homeschoolers are also welcome to attend. “We have a full array of dance, music, acting, Spanish, science, arts and crafts, chess, tennis, guitar, etc.,” Genys said. “We also have regular school activities. Keep in mind, our students only attend three half days a week. That is all they need and amazingly, can progress a grade every 90 days if the parents direct it.” Parents determine the pace at which their child is educated and, therefore, the school develops unique relationships with its parents because the school is self-governed. governing is an important component of its overall success. “Parents set the pace for their children,” she said. “Together they set goals and then meet with the dean monthly to see how they are doing and if they set realistic goals. The parents truly are in charge of their child’s education. Students are tested three times annually with a test designed by Simon and Schuster (who create the ACT and SAT tests). This provides an unbiased assessment on each student’s knowledge.” All instructors at Kimber Academy are certified to teach Kimber curriculum. Enrollment for the Kimber Academy will be limited to 200 students and tuition is very affordable, she said. Parents are invited to tour the campus by appointment. “Common Core (curriculum) is dangerous,” Genys said. “It is not designed for the betterment of children and, if parents are looking for alternatives (we do not use common core and won’t), Kimber Academy is a solid choice. We also don’t do data tracking on children either.” Reserve a space as soon as possible to ensure your child can attend. Kimber Academy believes that nurturing a love of learning in every child is top priority. Kimber Academy is located at the Clearview Cultural Center at 1355 S. Clearview Avenue (south of Southern Avenue). Call (480) 659-5980 or visit www.KimberAcademyMesa.com for additional information. August 2013

Military Issues in Divorce and Custody Matters I am incredibly grateful for our armed forces service members, and it has been my privilege to represent a number of them in family law matters. Cases involving members of the military are often an amalgamation of state and federal laws, which can lead to even more issues in court. While many of our judges have a general knowledge of some of the special rules affecting service members and their families, you cannot assume that they have all of the information to make the correct decisions. I recently handled a case in which a father of a child with limited supervised parenting time sought to gain legal decision making (formerly custody) and have the child placed in his care until the mother, an army officer deployed overseas, returned. The father hired an attorney and, after their attempts at bullying my client failed, they filed a petition to modify. We responded and after a brief hearing the judge dismissed the father’s petition because my client was actively deployed.

Another case I handled involved a sailor whose ex-wife would not allow him to see his children. The sailor was stationed in California and the exwife had moved to Arizona. Imagine a sailor getting back from a six-month deployment and not being able to have his children greet him or see them shortly thereafter. Although it was too late to have the court rule to keep the children in California, I am proud that we gained my client substantial and regular parenting time, including the majority of the summer. I have handled other cases involving a host of other military issues such as military retirement, child support payments and determining jurisdiction. Although I have handled numerous cases for service members, I also represent ex-spouses. Military service, although noble and selfless in many ways, does not make one above the law. If you are involved in a divorce, custody, or any family law matter related to the military, please call my office and schedule a consultation.

Joshua R. Boyle is an associate attorney at Rowley Chapman & Barney. His practice centers on any family law-related issues. Boyle earned his bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University in 2003, and his law degree from the same university in 2008.

Mesa Aquatics Club Water is life, swim for life Fall is approaching, but that doesn’t mean that swimming has to end. Mesa Aquatics Club has a year-round competitive swim team and offers comprehensive swim instruction for kids and adults ranging from beginners to Olympic trial-caliber athletes. Mesa Aquatics Club has a wide variety of programs that it wants to share with the community. “Mesa Aquatics Club encompasses four separate, but related organizations,” explained Coaching Director and CEO Paul Smith. That includes age group swimming for all ages, adult swimming, water polo for all levels and swim school. City water programs are winding down and Mesa Aquatics Club offers the chance for kids to continue swimming instruction and on the town

competition. Starting very soon is the fall league, which is for kids who have recreational swimming experience but want to participate with a team. “It’s a great introduction,” Smith stated. “That’s where we find a lot of our kids who end up being with our team for a long period of time.” Tryouts will be held in August at two different pools. Check the website, www.mesaaquatics.org, for further updates. Water polo registration also begins in August. Smith said there is an incredible amount of interest in the Masters and Adult Learn-to-Swim Program. “People hear ‘Masters swimming’ and there’s an assumption that you have to be good at it or have mastered it,” Smith said. “But the reality is that it is really catered toward all levels of athletes events calendar
