Mesa Sprint Triathlon Benefits Youth Programs Registration is underway for the third annual Mesa Sprint Triathlon held on Saturday, Oct. 12, at Skyline Aquatic Center, 845 S. Crismon Rd. “We are excited to bring a new component to our triathlon this year,” said Mesa Sprint Triathlon Race Director Becky Robson. “In addition to the race teams and kid’s splash and dash, we’re also adding a 5K race to the course. We want people of all ages and skill set to come out and enjoy this race because it directly benefits Mesa youth programs.” Sponsored by the Foundation for Mesa Parks and Recreation, this nonprofit organization raises support through fundraisers that benefit youth who cannot afford recreational programs, swim classes and camps offered by Mesa Parks and Recreation. “Without the Foundation for Mesa Parks and Recreation and fundraisers like Mesa Sprint Triathlon, we wouldn’t be able to assist families who need that extra support,” said Mesa

Parks, Recreation and Commercial Facilities Director Marc Heirshberg. “We feel that every child should have the opportunity to play and learn with us.” This year the Mesa Sprint Triathlon hopes to reach a goal of 400 participants. “Our main goal is to raise enough support to help these kids who can’t enjoy summer camps, swim classes and other recreational classes like most kids do every year,” Robson said. Cost of the triathlon is $60 for individuals and $65 for relay teams. Groups of three or more will each receive a $5 discount. Kids Splash & Dash costs $15 and running the 5K costs $20. Prices increase after Sept. 10. All participants will receive a dryfit race shirt and top three finishers in each age group and category will receive medals. Night Terrors More Frightening Than Bad Dreams For Parents By Tracy House Bad dreams or nightmares can cause anyone to have a restless night, but when a child suffers from night terrors, it can be more traumatizing to the caregiver than the child. “They’re usually more traumatic to everyone around them,” said Lauri Leadley, founder and president of Valley Sleep Center. “A nightmare, you usually wake up and remember. You never remember a night terror.” Night terrors occur predominantly in children and they do not have any recollection of the night terror. Sleep terrors can include waking up, agitation, large pupils, sweating and increased blood flow. Often the child will need to use the bathroom. “The difference between night

terrors and a nightmare, is that night terrors usually occur the first third of the night, during slow wave sleep, and a nightmare will occur during REM, or early morning, usually the second third of your sleep,” said Leadley. “They usually take place in the first part of the night and sometimes can be combined with sleepwalking.” Leadley said this is normal for night terrors. She said her three children experienced night terrors when they weren’t on their normal schedule, overtired or didn’t stay with their routine. “It’s really important that parents keep their children on a routine—they go to bed at the same time, they wake up at the same time. They have their

meals, their exercise and night time is a routine—calming, cool, dark rooms, no iPads, no radios, no TVs.” When a child is going through a night terror, Leadley said, “All you need to do is reassure yourself that it is normal because the child has no idea what is going on, they don’t know. The best thing to do is just comfort them, if they’re walking, get them back to their bed, but usually it’ll go away. It’s not something that’s going to last all night long. Pack School Lunches for Less With kids back in school, the cost of packing a school lunch each day can really add up, making your weekly grocery budget skyrocket. But don’t worry, I have a few tips and ideas listed below that will help you save! 1. Buy dry goods at discount stores. Stores such as Big Lots and Dollar General have a huge selection of dry goods such as crackers, cookies, snack mixes, granola bars and other items for a fraction of the price of traditional grocers. Stock up on these dry snack items at such discount stores and save. 2. Get wild about wraps. Tortilla wraps are only about $1 a package, and you can wrap just about anything in them. Use them to wrap up meat and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, or sliced vegetables and ranch. They are fun to make and even more fun to eat. photo page

3. Use reusable containers. Don’t waste money on disposable sandwich bags and containers. Instead, buy some reusable plastic containers at your local discount store. You will love being able to use these each day instead of having to buy more disposable items each week. You can even use reusable napkins. 4. Opt for nonmeat options. Meat can be pricey, so try to pack a nonmeat lunch one day a week. This can be hard boiled eggs, fruit salad, peanut butter wraps, or any other high protein treat.

5. Utilize a thermos. A thermos is great because your child can enjoy a hot lunch for less. You can pack a can of soup, spaghetti, stews or other hot lunch items for less. Don’t forget the spoon! 6. Forget the juice boxes. Juice boxes are quite pricey. Instead, mix your own drink mix and send it in a thermos or reusable water bottle. 7. Don’t forget a treat. You can bake your own sweet treats such as cookies and brownies for less than you can buy them at the store. Whip up a batch on Sunday and it will last you all week. Give some of these tips a try and see how easy it is to pack a lunch your child and your wallet will love! You are sure to come up with options that are tasty and budget friendly.

child’s life. “If there’s something stressful in the child’s life or they’re not getting proper sleep—obviously anything in excess—should be evaluated,” Leadley said. “Talk to your child’s teacher because that’s one of the things we’ve learned in the sleep community is how is the child doing in school?” Leadley said. Because sometimes the parent isn’t aware that there may be difficulty in school. “It’s important to talk to your child’s teacher and see how they’re doing in school.” She explained, “When children get tired they don’t just go to sleep, they get hyper, they get energetic to try to compensate for that tiredness. It important if you’re noticing irritability, difficulty paying attention, moodiness, those are all things that can be symptoms of a sleep disorder.” Leadley said sleep disorders are hereditary. “So if you have snoring or sleep apnea in your family, your kids

By Laurie Struna, Mesa Public Schools The 2013-14 school year marks the five-year anniversary for family support specialists in many Mesa Public Schools. Parental outreach is a main focus in the Mesa Public Schools District. Because research shows parent involvement helps improve student’s behavior, attendance and achievement. The specialists help the district continue to build strong school-to-home partnerships and increase academic achievement, and serve as liaisons between school personnel, parents and the community.

Homework...For the Fun of It Don’t tell anyone, but homework can be fun! I’m serious. Some of the best times I’ve spent with my boys have been when we were doing homework. There’s no doubt about it, homework has monopolized our lives most nights and weekends between August and June for the last 12 years. There have been times when we’ve all wanted to throw the textbooks out the window, and not every moment has been joyful. But as with most challenges, attitude can make all the difference. Research shows that when adults enjoy their work, they are more motivated and successful. That’s true for kids, too. If they can find some fun in their work, they’ll be more likely to do it well and value the accompanying success they experience at school. Making homework at least mildly enjoyable has required major pasta vixen

monthly meeting

parenting effort, but it’s also been an opportunity for my husband and me to teach work ethic, spend quality time with our children, and actually create some great memories! Some of our successful strategies include: • Sit nearby and do “adult homework,” (reading, paying bills, etc.). Just being close provides opportunities for conversation about the homework, how the day went, etc. • Study for 15 minutes several days in a row instead of an hour the night before a test, to improve retention (both parents and kids!). Cracking jokes about the subject matter or asking the kid to fill in the details “between the lines” sparks conversation and interest. • Instead of parents trying to make sense of notes they don’t understand (Whoa...chemistry! How can I

possibly quiz you over this?), the kid can explain notes or procedures to the parent. If the parent notices a significant level of struggling, it’s time to contact the teacher and make an appointment for more help. • Make up silly rhymes, stories or mental pictures to connect pieces of information, or use the first letter of each word in a grouping to make a nonsense word or sentence. (For example: My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizza Pies equals the planets, in order.) • Playing “memory” with flash cards is a whole lot more fun than just “doing flash cards.” • Taking turns reading pages of textbooks, stopping periodically to

discuss what we’ve read, has gotten us through many a tired hour, and lots of boring material is more interesting when read aloud (and, occasionally, made fun of ). Life comes at you fast, as the commercial goes, and one of the chief complaints parents and kids have is that they don’t have enough time to be together. It’s easy to overlook homework as an opportunity for connection, so when I consider all those hours our kids could have spent doing their homework alone, I believe we’re better as a family for having made it a team effort. Now when the answer to, “What do you need help with?” is, “Nothing,” I’m a little bummed. Who’d have ever thought I’d miss doing homework?

By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Jars of Clay pianist Charlie Lowell said he could breathe a sigh of relief when his band released “Inland,” its new album, on Aug. 27. It marked the beginning of an era for Jars of Clay, one that brings the entire “business” under one roof. “In many ways, we have restarted,” Lowell said via telephone from a “fun little club” in Charlotte, N.C. “We’re not on a label. We don’t have management. We are living close to the bone and making all of the decisions. Our fans have been patient, kind of hanging in there while we figure this all out.” Lowell said the endeavor has become a lot of work. The quartet became more “intimately involved” with the business side of things. “Before it was like, ‘We think you should talk it over,’” Lowell explained. “Now it’s like we have to filter through all of the options and decide which one might be helpful. It’s definitely a full-time business and occasionally we get to play some songs. That’s kind of how it feels. There are days I thought I was in a band. But there’s more reward—emotionally and financially.” Jars of Clay will play more than “some songs” when its tour comes to the Mesa Arts Center on Tuesday, Sept. 24. The band will highlight “Inland,” which was produced by

Grammy Award nominee Tucker Martine. “I think the work early on—maybe the psychological work more than anything—was to get the ghosts and the voices out of the room,” he said about the recording process. “Over 20 years, we’ve collected a lot of unnecessary voices—What’s radio going to play? What’s radio not going to play? What will fans expect from us? What is too much? What’s not enough? What’s off limits?” For “Inland,” Jars of Clay wrote close to 20 songs, which touched on a variety of topics. “We’ve done a lot of things over the years,” Lowell said. “Some of them are more church-centric or Christian world-view oriented. Some of them are just general humanity focused. “What we learned in looking back was when we come most alive in our music is when we could write out of the middle space, the gray in between when it’s hard to figure out the balance between your work and your family, your relationship to love, faith or doubt. It seems like there’s a lot less knowing than there is knowing.” Now that the music is back in its collective hands, Jars of Clay is in charge of its own fate. “We have a brand that is familiar in different circles,” said Lowell, who is a big fan of Feist and Arcade Fire.

“We wanted to take a swing at this independent thing. The down side of the label is somebody who really believes in you signs you, but the rest of the people at the label don’t’ necessarily love the record or get what you’re doing. They’re there doing their job. We’ve been vetting people that love the record and think they can

Organ Stop Pizza Organ Stop Pizza in East Mesa is kind of like an attraction at Disneyland. Diners of all ages watch the Wurlitzer pipe organ—the largest in the nation—with a sense of wonderment. The instrument’s music brings visitors back to a time of innocence. The Wurlitzer makes a grand entrance to diners several times throughout the night. It rises from beneath the floor, slowly and turning in circles, until it arrives level to the stage. The food isn’t half bad, either. We imbibed on two large pizzas, mozzarella sticks and garlic cheese bread, a quintet that was offered as part of a back-to-school special in August for $29.95. The mozzarella sticks were plentiful, about six sticks per order with a side of marinara sauce. The garlic cheese bread was amazing, with the perfect comm. spotlight

combination of garlic and cheese atop four soft pieces of bread. The pizza was delightful, with thick layers of mozzarella cheese, and a sauce with a slight kick to it. My friend, Trish and I, enjoyed a pie with sausage and pepperoni, while her 9-year-old son, Cody, and my husband, Dave, ate a meat lover’s pizza. Although it’s known for its pizza, Organ Stop Pizza also offers pasta ($5.99 to $9.29), sandwiches ($5.99), a long, one-trip-only salad bar ($2.99 and $5.99) and an ice cream parlor that my 16- and 18-year-old nieces remember from their childhood. Appetizers are priced at between $1.99 for the soup of the day to $5.89 for mozzarella sticks. or until tender. Add cream and cook for 2-3 minutes until luscious. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Add cooked pancetta, parsley and peas and toss gently to combine. Sprinkle cheese over top and stir to melt and combine. Cook until heated through. In a large pot of boiling salted water, add pasta and cook until al dente. Drain, reserving 1/4 cup pasta water. Add the reserved pasta water and drained farfalle to skillet. Toss to combine pasta with sauce and season with salt and pepper, to taste. Serve, garnished with extra cheese and parsley. Tears, optional. Pasta Tip: Always save a little pasta water to stir into your pasta sauce. It’s starchy and salty and works to bring the sauce together and make it silky.

Protecting Your Wealth Five Common Retirement Planning Mistakes According to a March 2012 survey by the Employee Benefit Research Institute, only 14 percent of American workers say they are “very confident” they will have enough money to live comfortably throughout retirement. As an adviser to dozens of 401(k), 403(b) and 457(b) retirement plans, I can tell you that most Americans are not saving nearly enough for retirement. To help reduce such uncertainty from your life, consider these five common retirement savings pitfalls—and how to avoid them.

Mistake No. 3: Fearing Stock Market Volatility It is true that stock mutual funds face a greater risk of short-term price swings than fixed-income (bond) mutual funds. However, stocks have historically produced stronger returns over the long term. In general, the longer your investment time horizon, the more of your 401(k) you should have invested in stock funds. The greatest mistake you can make is to invest too conservatively in your 20s, 30s and 40s.

Mistake No. 1: Waiting to Maximize Your Contributions The sooner you start contributing the maximum amount allowed by your employer-sponsored retirement plan, the better your chances for building a significant savings cushion. By starting early, you allow more time for your contributions—and potential earnings—to compound, or build upon themselves, on a tax-deferred basis. For 2013, the maximum you can contribute to your 401(k), 403(b) or 457 plan is $17,500. If you are age 50 or older, you can sock away an additional $5,500. If you can’t contribute to the max, be sure to contribute enough to take full advantage of any company match contributions.

Mistake No. 4: Timing the Market Some investors try to base investment decisions on daily or monthly price swings. But unless you have a crystal ball, “timing the market” is very risky and it can negatively impact your investment performance over the long term. A better strategy is to stay invested during up and down markets throughout your investment time horizon (career). By regularly contributing into your 401(k) account,

Mistake No. 2: Ignoring Specific Financial Goals It is difficult to create an effective investment plan without first targeting a specific dollar amount and recognizing how much time you have to pursue that goal. To enjoy the same quality of life in retirement that you have become accustomed to during your prime earning years, you may need the equivalent of up to 80 percent of your final working year’s salary for each year of retirement. Page 30

you are dollar cost averaging over time and you are likely to increase your long-term investment performance. Mistake No. 5: Failing to Diversify Investing in just one fund or asset class could subject your investment portfolio to unnecessary risk. Spreading your money over a wellchosen mix of investments may help reduce the potential for loss during periods of market volatility. Diversification may offset losses in any one investment or asset category by taking advantage of possible gains elsewhere. Your asset allocation (mix between different investment classes)—not the actual funds you pick—will actually determine approximately 94 percent of your investment performance over time. Properly “structuring” your 401(k) investment portfolio is one of the most important things you can do to achieve retirement savings success. Now that you are aware of these five common investment errors,

consider yourself lucky: You are ready to benefit from other people’s experiences—without making the same mistakes. Scott Johnson is a vice president with Arista Wealth Management LLC. Self Development Charter School A School that Develops Lifelong Learners There are many educational choices for your child. Administrative Team Member Christina Harguess. For the most part, the charter school follows the Mesa Public Schools’ calendar. The philosophy behind the school is derived from various sources. “It evolves from several different visions and thoughts,” said Teacher and Administrative Team Member Rachel Hunt. “Each student that attends the school is treated individually through instructional strategies. We believe that every student can reach their maximum potential at this particular school.” The environment at the school is nurturing and supportive. “The academic program is rigorous, however the focus is on concept mastery and high expectations,” noted Hunt. Real Estate and Poker I have many passions, but recently I realized that my top two have some very real similarities. Growing up. I watched my dad play poker at our house with his brothers and his friends on Friday nights after my mom made a big dinner. It never ceased to amaze me how he would consistently win. Call it luck or call it skill, I think a lot of it had to do with his ability to read his opponents. At the end of the night, he was almost always the big winner. My dad also had his fair share of luck and skill buying and selling real estate. Some properties were for investment and some were the homes that we lived in, but either way he was always able to negotiate great offers and that resulted in him buying low and selling high. So what do poker and real estate have in common, you ask? Success in poker requires a certain amount of luck, a good head for math and the ability to be very observant. Did your opponent call or raise in a weak fashion? Did he show aggression when none was needed? Did he twitch his left eye when that ace of spades came on the turn? These are all essential bits of information that must be analyzed in order to make the most informed decision. The same skills can be applied to real estate. When I receive an offer on one of my listings, the first thing I do is sit back and let all of the information in front of me sink in before I respond. Next, a conversation with the buyer’s agent is critical. I try to gather as much information about the buyers as I can get their agent to divulge. Then there is the math—there are many ways to craft a deal that will work for all parties. The same applies when I am representing a buyer. Even with a tight inventory in the biz spotlight

marketplace, I want my buyers to get the very best deal on the property that works for them. Poker and real estate must also be looked at as business transactions. In poker if you think someone is raising you just to be a bully, the worst thing to do is to let your pride get the best of you and play right into his trap. You need to play the cards, the odds, the position and the person, collectively, or you will ultimately lose. In real estate, if a buyer submits a “low ball” offer, don’t get insulted. While the property you are selling might be your “home,” to the buyer it is still just a house. Take a step back and think of selling your home solely as a business decision. Forget about the notches in the door jamb with your kid’s height marked along the sides. Forget about the custom mural that your aunt painted on the wall. These memories don’t have any monetary value to anyone but you—and they—shouldn’t get in the way of the ultimate goal of selling your investment. Similarly, when buying a home, it is important to assess when it is wise to get in a bidding war and when it is wise to wait until the right property comes along.
