On behalf of Tempe residents, welcome to our community! We are so pleased that you and your family have come out to celebrate July 4th at our Tempe Town Lake Festival. We’re hopeful that you will enjoy our wonderful community and have a fun-filled day while celebrating our independence and the birth of our nation. An amazing amount of work goes into making this celebration a success. The Kiwanis Club of Tempe has worked for over 60 years to produce this spectacular evening of fireworks and family fun, with all the proceeds from ticket sales being reinvested in local charities. Their commitment to this event is the reason it is such a triumph for our community, and we’re thankful for their generous work. We’re also thankful to all of the volunteers and staffers who have given their own time and labor to this exciting event. Tens of thousands of residents Valleywide come to Tempe to celebrate the 4th and this event wouldn’t be the amazing achievement that it is without the work of these volunteers and staffers. Today, we pay tribute to our founding, our freedoms and the dedicated men and women of the United States Armed Forces who have defended these rights over the last 237 years. We’re grateful that you’ve come to Tempe to help honor their sacrifice. Please enjoy our community, and we hope that you have a safe and memorable 4th of July celebration. The Kiwanis Club of Tempe What We Do

T

Mission Statement

To support the six objectives of Kiwanis International and provide opportunities for Kiwanis Club of Tempe members to provide community service or funding to those in need or those deserving, with the focus on young children, the foundation for the future and emphasis on Tempe needs.

The Objects of Kiwanis International

• To give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than the material values of life. • To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships. • To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards. • To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship. • To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities. • To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism, which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice patriotism and good will.

he Kiwanis Club of Tempe, now in its 62nd year of service, is engaged annually in 15 projects that benefit the community, including families, individuals, schools and non-profits that work for a better life for children. The club is comprised of people who live or work in Tempe who have a desire, through volunteer work, to meet the many needs of Tempe’s youth. KCOT is always seeking new members – people dedicated to their community, who wish to serve those in need. For a fifth year, Kiwanians read books to Head Start children through its “Read to Exceed” program. It set up game booths for children at the Halloween Carnival at Kiwanis Park. This year’s carnival was the largest yet, with several thousand people in attendance. KCOT again served a family preThanksgiving meal to youngsters and their families of the Ladmo Branch of the Boys and Girls Club. The Club adopted needy families in Tempe and gave them dozens of things for Christmas. Members also brought Tempe children to Target and helped them shop for holiday gifts for themselves and their families. They worked to clean up Papago Park in Tempe on the annual Day of Service.

Above: These Tempe High School Key Club members came out on March 30 to Kiwanis Park to stage the annual Tempe Community Easter Egg Hunt where hundreds of children swept like an army across a soccer field to retrieve plastic eggs. Right: These two girls scrambled at the Kiwanis Easter Egg Hunt to fill two baskets with plastic eggs that they redeemed for prizes.

We have played Tempe’s Fabulous 4th twice, once in 2007 and again in 2010 as the “headline act.” We were the “headliner” at the City of Chandler’s Fall Rhythmfest in 2010. And we make regular appearances in Sun Lakes and at JJ Madisons in Mesa. Their music also covers many dance styles, including swing, cha cha, waltz, disco, line dancing, 2-step, and even the twist and other rock and roll styles. People love dancing to The Big Zephyr!

Grand Theft Audio 3 8:35 p.m. to 9:05 p.m. & 9:50 p.m. to 10:45 p.m.

Grand Theft Audio 3, formed in the fall of 2010, is the preordained culmination of musical journeys, professional experiences and long-term friendship. This three-piece band hailing from Phoenix, set out to create

new original music based on the members’ diverse musical taste. Drawing from influences like The Police, Stevie Wonder and Incubus, GTA 3 balances dance and rock with pop and soul - to create songs that are as much fun to play as they are to listen to. Donovan Mote, bass guitar and lead vocalist, has been performing publicly since he was 4 years old. He brings his experienced talent with live bands, musical theater, acting and live-event production to GTA 3 in the form of accomplished musical endowment and occasional comic relief. Donovan, the director of operations for Pro Production Services, oversees event productions for Grammy winners, superstars and heads of state. Curt Cottle’s musical proficiency originates from the influences of Dennis Chambers, Tony Royster, Jr., and Neil Peart. Curt, a gifted drummer, draws from many years’ experience in live bands, session recording and record producing. He is a dedicated scholar of music and provides the rhythmic foundation upon which Grand Theft Audio 3 depends on for maximum funktastic success. Holding down the melody on guitar and singing backup vocals, Tim Triplett is the consummate musical tactician. Tim, who has shared the stage with acts such as Less Than Jake and Marylyn Manson, brings his skill of the stage with vibrant ferocity. In addition to a background in jazz studies, Tim has also provided music for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Phoenix Coyotes through Fox Sports News Arizona.

Fireworks

Fireworks Display 9:15 p.m. to 9:50 p.m.

T

his year’s Fireworks Display, put on by Fireworks Productions of Arizona, will include more than 1,800 fireworks and last about 35 minutes. The night’s attendees can expect a truly spectacular display, launched from the Mill Avenue bridge over Tempe Town Lake. The fireworks are easily viewable from anywhere within Tempe Beach Park.

Why July 4? Why fireworks? Independence Day – which recognizes the formal adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress – was not declared a federal holiday until 1941. It was first observed, however, on July 8, 1776, in Philadelphia, when a public reading of the Declaration of Independence took place. It is often said that George Washington celebrated America’s second birthday by providing double rations of rum to his troops in 1778. Annual celebrations of the nation’s birthday began in northeastern states as early as the mid-1780s and have continued throughout the U.S. since. So why are fireworks the way we celebrate Independence Day? Marshall Brain, founder of the website www.howstuffworks.com, says a better

question might be, “Why do guys like to light firecrackers?” The holiday is essentially an excuse to make some noise. What’s interesting, Brain says, is how quickly the tradition was established. By 1777, people were celebrating the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. “It was a huge deal,” he says. “Once the war was over and won (in 1783), almost everything we associate with the Fourth of July, including picnics and bands and parades, was happening.” Perhaps more importantly, then, one should ask, with all that partying, why don’t fireworks routinely catch things on fire? Well, if mishandled, fireworks certainly can cause all kinds of damage. But the reason colorful aerial explosions don’t rain down fiery ashes is there’s nothing left after a few seconds. When a shell bursts, it’s hundreds of feet above the ground. Brain says the explosion ignites tiny, pea-shaped bits of metal of the type you might find on sparklers. After burning for a few seconds, they dissolve. “They’re completely consumed in the process of doing their thing,” he says. Bits of paper that originally wrapped the shell sometimes make their way back to Earth, but they’re rarely aflame.
