Scottsdale Preparing for ‘Super’ Season The Super Bowl may be set for University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, but the City of Scottsdale has a “super season” planned to welcome the big game to the Valley in early February for the second time in seven years. Led by Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane, a press conference was held on Marshall Way Bridge near Scottsdale Fashion Square on Oct. 28 to reveal the activities leading up to the big game. More than 1 million people are expected to partake in the fun. “That’s four times our population,” Lane said. “Think about how many Arizona first impressions will be made in this January alone.” Lane said that he plans to make sure those first impressions are great ones and that they encourage people to return to Scottsdale. “None of it is possible without a collaborative community effort; working together is key,” he said, “It will take all of us to put together the biggest party of the year and make our visitors feel welcome.” Lane’s presentation was followed by talks by representatives from groups that will be temporarily calling Scottsdale home. Those include the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee, ESPN, Taste of the NFL and the Hall of Fame Players Foundation. For the second time, ESPN will make the Scottsdale Fashion Square its

production headquarters in the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl. Shows like “Mike and Mike,” “SportsCenter,” “NFL Insiders,” “NFL Live” and a special four-hour edition of “Sunday NFL Countdown” will originate from there, according to Seth Markman, ESPN senior coordinating producer. “We plan 120-plus hours of television and radio coverage that week,” Markman said. “We will actually, at times, have three networks on at the exact same time from the exact same location.” Markman said one of ESPN’s goals is to show off the host area and city. “People are going to be jealous at home and will want to come out and see it,” he said. ESPN’s coverage from Arizona starts with the 2015 Pro Bowl set for University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale on Sunday, Jan. 25, a week before the Super Bowl. Michael Haynes—former Arizona State University standout, Super Bowl champion and NFL hall of famer— represented the Hall of Fame Players Foundation at the press conference and said that the Pro Bowl will bring even more sports celebrities to the area. “There’s going to be tons, tons of current and former football players here,” Haynes said. “There’s going to be football head to toe. It’s going to be one of those great things for the area.”

Adobe Chic: The Homes of George Ellis

Gridiron

A founder of Scottsdale’s Cattle Track neighborhood, George Ellis pioneered Sonoran-centric architecture in the 1940s and ‘50s with the use of adobe bricks in modern, fashionable homes. Ellis was a surveyor by trade who relocated to Scottsdale in 1937. In Scottsdale, This photo from the 1930s Ellis’ passion for architecture found an outlet as he began shows George Ellis, a custom homebuilder who building homes on his 16 acres next to the Arizona developed his unique Canal. His homes caught the eye of Frank Lloyd Wright, style using adobe and other “found” materials who asked Ellis to build for him on a project in Phoenix. available locally. Ellis plied his craft with distinctive homes from Tempe to Pinnacle Peak, many of which still stand.

Frank Lloyd Wright brought his staff to Ellis’ Murdock house to show them the level of building quality he expected in his own projects. Ellis included built-in cabinets, seating and shelving in his design.

One of Ellis’ crowning achievements was a luxurious adobe home near Pinnacle Peak designed and built for cereal heiress Lois Kellogg Maury in 1948. The Crescent Moon Ranch included three guesthouses and an eight-stall barn. Left: This photo shows Crescent Moon Ranch’s sun porch. Other features in the adobe home included open and enclosed terraces, panoramic views and a lily pool in the living room. The property was listed in 1953 for $155,000—a tremendous sum at the time. The Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale occupies the site now.

George Ellis built this adobe and redwood home in the Cattle Track neighborhood for his brotherin-law David Murdock. Notice the adobe brickwork alternating with layers of redwood planks—an Ellis trademark.

The 2014 Big Heap Vintage & Handmade Festival will mark the first time the event will be held at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.

The Big Heap Vintage & Handmade Festival Coming to Salt River Fields By Lynette Carrington Something whimsical, something vintage and something hand-forged: The Big Heap Vintage & Handmade Festival brings it all to Salt River Fields on Friday, Nov. 21, through Sunday, Nov. 23. Hailing from 10 states and more than 15 Arizona cities, artisans will showcase clothing, furniture, jewelry, housewares, collectibles, art and more. The festival is an extension of Lori Cowherd and Mickey Muelenbeek’s Thieves Market, a vintage and handmade flea market that originated in Cave Creek. It now is held the first Saturday of each month October through April at Big Surf in Tempe. “For that, people were wanting more than just first Saturdays,” Cowherd said. “They wanted a few days to show things and we wanted to produce something that was higher end, not just flea market stuff that included art work and high quality vintage pieces.” The juried Big Heap Vintage & Handmade Festival was founded four years ago to satisfy those needs. This is the first year the Big Heap festival is being held at Salt River Fields. “Cave Creek was pretty good-sized, but it seemed to be a bit far for people, so now we’re right in the middle of everything,” Cowherd explained. Marshall Shore, Arizona’s “Hip Historian,” will emcee the event on Saturday, Nov. 22. Bullhorn in hand, Shore will stroll through the crowds calling a fashion show of unique and vintage clothing throughout the day.

“We’ve got Mitch Phillips from Rare Scarf and Jenny Kuller from Redhead Sadie,” Shore said. “It’s going to be an amazing group of people putting stuff together. I love that it’s a bit of a throwback to a fashion show. It’s going to be more of a fashion parade, like what they would have done in Phoenix and Scottsdale back in the day. This is actually my first year doing this and hopefully not the last.” Food will be available at the Eats Court and includes vendors BuzzNBeez food truck, Hao Bao Chinese Soul Food and Sugar Jam. The Torrey McDannald Quintet will be providing the entertainment on Saturday, Nov. 22, in the Eats Court. Habitat for Humanity will raffle a playhouse that the organization will build during the festival. Tickets will be $5 or five for $20 and proceeds will be split between Habitat for Humanity and the Big Heap’s own “Pay It Artward” program benefitting Phoenix Children’s Hospital. The winner does not need to be present to win and the playhouse will be delivered to the winner’s home. The Big Heap Festival takes place 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 21, and Saturday, Nov. 22, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 23. Tickets are available for one-day ($7) and threeday ($15) passes at www.thebigheap. com or at the gates. Salt River Fields is located at 7555 N. Pima Rd. in Scottsdale.

By Gavin Maxwell The Arizona State Land Department will begin the rezoning process of more than 25,000 acres of land north of Scottsdale next year now that the Scottsdale City Council has approved the applications. The rezoning would replace residential land with 116 acres of new commercial and resort space. This addition could increase property values allowing the state to collect more money for the land at auction. If the rezoning is successful, the Arizona State Land Department will move forward with preparations to auction off 400 acres of the rezoned 4,000 next year. The 4,000 acres of trust land in question lay mostly north of Bell Road and east of Scottsdale Road and neighboring existing residential areas. Scottsdale is planning on participating in this auction and hopes to add the 400 acres to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. The 400acre plot Scottsdale is interested in

does not include any of the proposed commercial or resort space. These state trust lands have been held in reserve by the U.S. government so that they could later be sold to essential public institutions. Scottsdale will have to compete against private bidders if the land goes to auction and it is likely that the City will encounter some competition: Investors and developers who may be interested in acquiring the land for the purpose of building new communities. The City Council also recently approved a second rezoning application concerning 22,300 acres of City-owned land within the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. The City wants to rezone this land as conservation open-space. “We are simply initiating the (rezoning) cases, there is no approval of zoning, and there is no commitment to spending numbers for preserve lands, those will come is subsequent steps,” said Preserve Director Kroy Ekblaw.

Ekblaw expects to go through a lengthy rezoning process before a final approval for either case is reached. Now that the rezoning applications have been approved by the City, the State Land Department will take over. Its next step is gathering the staff necessary to process the rezoning. Once it has completed any initial paperwork, the staff can move forward and begin scheduling public open houses and planning commission meetings, Ekblaw said. These events will provide Scottsdale community

members with opportunities to suggest refinements or adjustments to the rezoning plans. “Anytime you are bumping up against exiting residential areas, there will be some people asking what is going on, and there are probably people that expect it to become preserve land.” Once the open houses and other public events have been scheduled, the date and time will become available on the City of Scottsdale’s website at www.scottsdaleaz.gov/ Topics/Planning.

SPILLS & STAINS Q: The holidays are near and I have beautiful table linens! I know I run the risk of food and other spills. Should I attempt to treat them immediately on my own or will I be making the stain worse? A: Leave it to the professionals. Even wax is no problem. Bringing the item in as soon as possible helps, as time will set stains. Washing household items at home can have disappointing results. Prestige Cleaners knows how to maintain the shape of your tablecloths and other household linens.

The Laser Wellness PMA mission remains to help millions of people live a happier, healthier, pain-free life. The Laser Wellness team wants to shed light on how people can take charge of their health to help enhance the body’s ability to prevent disease or illness, to heal itself more rapidly and to deal with pain. To learn about this technology, the public is invited to attend seminars on Saturday, Dec. 13, in Scottsdale and Sunday, Dec. 14, in Glendale. Low level laser therapy (LLLT) is a noninvasive, nonthermal way in which subtle, coherent light energy penetrates the skin and underlying tissues to stimulate natural healing in the body. LLLT is FDA approved for many conditions including osteoarthritis of the hands, carpal tunnel, hair growth and myofascial pain of the shoulder. It shows tremendous benefit for many types of ailments, disease and pain. Research is extensive with more than 4,000 studies already completed, more than all the NSAID drugs combined. This technology is used for back, knee, shoulder, neck, hands, hip and foot pain, as well as to help the body deal with nerve damage in neuropathic conditions or enhancing the body’s function in diabetes or autoimmune diseases. Laser Wellness PMA offers the QLaser Wellness System, comprised of a handheld cold laser and two enhancer probes, allowing for increased range of application and use. Low level laser therapy provided in a professional medical system with true laser diodes, frequency and differing dosages should be in every home, clinic, school and business in the country, a Laser Wellness PMA spokesperson said. Being able to use LLLT daily can be vital to achieving maximum results, and Laser Wellness PMA said it believes in the home treatment and self-responsibility for our health. Call 1-800-303-6923, Code 6901 for a free information packet and DVD. Visit www.laserwellnesspma.com/ seminars.

She was soon put on total bed rest and eventually hospitalized at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea Medical Center. “Writing in my laptop was my saving grace,” she said. Nicholas Bubeck was born at 34 weeks and spent seven nights in the neonatal intensive care unit. “Expecting Perfect—My Bumpy Journey to Mommyhood” recounts her harrowing pregnancy experiences that also had its bright spots. “The beginning was very emotional for me and my husband both, even though Nicholas was a total rock star,” Bubeck stated. The book was a labor of love and she has her husband’s seal of approval. “At first I was a little hesitant, but when I realized how important it was for Nadine, I said, ‘Go for it,’” Nate said. “It brings me joy in watching Nadine create a successful brand and watching it unfold.” The book foreword was written by Bubeck’s gynecologist, Dr. JulieAnn Heathcott of Arizona Women’s Care. Now with baby No. 2 on the way, things have been moving along a little easier. However, it still gives her much to draw from for various endeavors. Bubeck hosts the online mommy show “All Things Mama” and runs a boutique lifestyle website. Additionally, she is thrilled to have joined www. momsmagazine.com as a “spokesmom” and will serve as host of the company’s website-based “Moms TV.” She is also part of Disney’s Social Media Moms network. Gluten-Free is More Than Just a Fad Diet

By CariAnn Hunt It acts as a poison in the body. This is how Madeline Bolander described the effect of gluten on those with celiac disease, a disease of the intestines with which she was diagnosed one and a half years ago. The 17-year-old Gilbert resident said it was difficult to adjust to ridding her life of gluten. She brings her own food when she goes out to eat with friends, but that proved to be hard. Although there are many restaurants in her area, Bolander said, “There are only about four restaurants I completely trust.” But more than that, she had to get new makeup, lotion and other products because many contain gluten.

She said there is a surprising amount of products with gluten in them, and she has to be careful. She said anything that could possibly get into her mouth had to be changed. Bolander specifically remembers finding out she couldn’t use just any kind of ChapStick. “I do a lot of research and label reading,” she said. Christy Luedtka, co-president of the Gilbert-based Celiac Disease Foundation Arizona Chapter, said a gluten-free diet is somewhat of a fad, but for those with celiac disease, the lifestyle is a matter of life or death. 5 Tips to Save on Holiday Meals pasta vixen

mom cents

People tend to overspend at the holidays and much of that can be alleviated by setting a budget and sticking to it. You may know how much you want to spend on presents, but have you planned for Christmas dinner? That meal can set you back— especially if you are entertaining many guests. Here are some tips to help you save and stick to your budget this Christmas. Take advantage of sales starting now. We will see new sales each week with items that you will eventually need for your holiday dinner. Baking products and canned goods on sale can be stored in your pantry, while fresh produce, like squash and cranberries, can be frozen and stored. Shop each week and grab the items on sale so that you aren’t paying full price right before your holiday meal. photo page

2

Watch for rare coupons and rebates. During the holidays, you are sure to see some rare coupons, including savings on meat and produce. Snag these when you see them. Also be sure to save any “try-me-free” offers you run across, rebate forms, gift with purchase forms, or any other savings opportunities that come your way. Make inexpensive sides. Some side dishes are quite filling and only cost pennies per serving. Great examples of these would be bread items and potatoes. You can buy boxed corn bread for around 40 cents a box, and you

3

can buy boxed or real potatoes for mashed potatoes for less than a few dollars. These are tasty, filling sides that don’t cost much and everyone enjoys. Have everyone pitch in. Even if it is just a side dish, rolls or a pie, don’t be afraid to ask your friends and family to bring something to dinner. People love to show off their favorite recipe, too, and it will help cut down the overall cost for your meal. Keep dessert simple. You don’t need an extravagant dessert to finish your meal. Most people will be stuffed by then anyhow! Dollar stores carry ready-made pie crusts and pie filling for just $1 each. Or pick up fresh fruit, serve with ice cream and drizzle with honey for a light refreshing treat. Happy Saving!

4

Cutie Patooties! Is your kid a “cutie patootie”? Of course he is, so submit your baby, toddler or kid photos to the The Nearby News’ Scottsdale Moms section for a chance to win a restaurant gift certificate. Send high-resolution digital photos to editor@nearbynews. com. Be sure to include your name, your child’s name and age and your phone number. (Don’t worry, phone numbers will not be published.)

3-Day Hassle-Free

NO PROBLEM at Van +

Longtime Goal Born on Dec. 25, 1965, in Nashville, Matheny was raised in Georgia before his family moved to Tucson, where his father took a job as a teacher. Attracted to his father’s collection of jazz and classical LP records, Matheny began piano lessons at age 5 and switched to the trumpet at age 9. While in his teens, he fell in love with the flugelhorn and left home to attend Michigan’s prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy and then Boston’s Berklee College of Music. After private studies with Carmine Caruso in New York City, Matheny became the protégé of Farmer, a formative relationship that lasted over a decade, according to his bio. With more than 60 recordings in his discography, Matheny said his latest album, “Sagebrush Rebellion,” is his 10th as a leader. “We’re able to do this for a living,” he said. “It’s nice to play music for people, travel around and make friends.”

By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski A protégé of legendary trumpeter and flugelhornist Art Farmer, Chandler musician Dmitri Matheny said it’s important to persuade youngsters to listen to jazz. If he hadn’t indulged as a kid, he may not have moved on to be dubbed “one of the jazz world’s most talented horn players” or “unquestionably a master.” Matheny is doing his part with “The SnowCat,” a heartwarming tale of a little girl’s search for her wandering white cat on a chilly afternoon. Each year, the musician and his friends bring “The SnowCat” to life in a series of performances for families, including 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at the ASU Kerr Cultural Center in Scottsdale. “I used to do these shows every Christmas, where we would take a children’s story like ‘Santa Claus’ or ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’ or ‘The Grinch’ and set it to music,” Matheny said. “I did these in San Francisco just about every year for 10 years. They were pretty popular among kids and grandparents.” But when lawyers asked him to license the characters, he created an original story. “The SnowCat is based on an ancient Japanese parable about an ox herder, a little boy who goes looking for his lost ox,” said Matheny, who changed the story to a little girl and a cat. The story explores a wide range of genres, including reggae, jazz, hip hop, funk and calypso. “It’s really lively,” he said. “We’re able to keep the attention of the little kids.” There are coloring books and plush toys to enhance the experience. As vocalist Holly Pyle performs the songs, images and text from the book are being projected on the wall behind the musicians. “It encourages literacy,” Matheny said. “Parents can read along with kids. While we’re performing, some

Guava-Glazed Pork Tenderloin with Cuban Salsa It was love at first bite—for me and for everyone else at the event catered by Scottsdale Chef Linda Martin. A guava-glazed pork tenderloin with Cuban salsa prepared by Linda was all people could talk about, and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the recipe and serve this ultra-flavorful dish to friends and family. Linda is a Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef who is a Valley favorite with more than 14 years of experience. This month, if you’re looking for an exquisite meal for family and guests or just an easy weeknight meal, you can’t go wrong with this pork specialty. Thank you, chef, for sharing it! For the Salsa: 1/3 cup chopped cilantro 1/3 cup vegetable oil 1/4 cup white wine vinegar 1/4 cup chopped onion 2 tablespoons chopped chives 2 jalapenos, minced 1 garlic clove, minced Kosher salt

1. Place a saucepan over medium high heat. Add enough oil to lightly coat the bottom of the pan. When the oil “shimmers” add the onion and cook 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook 1 minute. Add the guava nectar and bring to boil. Cook over high heat until reduced to 1

cup. Add the soy sauce, ketchup, cayenne pepper and salt. Cook 1 minute. Remove from heat and let cool. 2. Set the pork in a 9 inch-by-13 inch baking dish. Brush all sides of the pork with half of the glaze. 3. Light grill to medium high. Grill the pork, turning and brushing with the remaining glaze until browned on all sides, about 15 minutes, or until cooked through (with an instant-read thermometer 150 degrees). Transfer the cooked pork to a cutting board and let rest 10 minutes. 4. While the pork is resting make the salsa: In a bowl, mix the cilantro, oil, vinegar, onion, chives, jalapenos and garlic. Season with salt. Transfer to a serving bowl. 5. To serve: Slice the pork into quarter- to half-inch slices. Arrange on a serving platter. Pour any accumulated juices over the pork. Garnish cilantro sprigs and serve the salsa on the side.
