One of those registered donors is Kellye Pummill of Mesa. Pummill also walked in the parade honoring her late daughter, Marissa “Roo” Pummill. Marissa lost her life to suicide in October 2014 but knew early on that she wanted to be an organ donor, saving six lives to date. COMMUNITY

Find the perfect activities for your happy campers By Kimberly Hosey Spring and summer camps from Arizona, the Southwest and around the country will gather from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at Rancho Solano Preparatory School, 9180 E. Via de Ventura in Scottsdale, for the 13th annual Camp Fair AZ, hosted by Raising Arizona Kids magazine. Parents and kids will have the opportunity to check out what the nearly 100 camps at the one-day fair have to offer through activities and demonstrations, by talking to camp counselors and through informational materials. The event aims to help parents and caregivers save time looking up dozens of camps online by offering them all in one location. The fair is one day this year as opposed to previous years’ twoday events, but the venue is bigger so organizers hope to offer families even more. No matter what interests your children—or what you’d like to give

them an opportunity to try—the camp fair probably has you covered. If tents, campfires and hikes are your preferred camp experience, then destinations like Friendly Pines Camp in the Bradshaw Mountains near Prescott might be in your future. If you’re looking for an out-of-state splurge, overnight camps at several wooded retreats throughout the country will be offered. Archery, horseback riding, swimming, kayaking, crafts, hiking and more keep campers busy and building memories. Overnight camps with a specialized twist, like overnight weeks at Catalina Sea Camp and Astrocamp hosted by Guided Discoveries, and Catalina Island Camps as well as day camps at Lowell Observatory and Sea Life Arizona, focus on a particular area of study in numerous activities designed to teach and help them fall in love with the subjects through hands-on lessons. Campers come home with an in-depth appreciation for fields like astronomy or marine biology.

Have a performer on your hands? Your star-in-training can hone their dramatic flair, acting or musical talent and stage presence in programs like Arizona Broadway Theatre, ASU Gammage’s Camp Broadway, Childsplay Theatre Academy, School of Rock and more. Your kids can run away to circus camp, at Circus School of Arizona’s youth camps. Kids can try out balancing, hula hooping and even beginner aerial skills under the watchful eyes of experts. For campers who have a way with animals, organizations like Arizona Animal Welfare League, Audubon Arizona, the Phoenix Zoo and others foster a love for critters from scaly to furry while teaching proper biology and animal care. Observation, curiosity and compassion are all fostered as campers learn more about the other animals that share our world. Learning doesn’t have to stop just because it’s summer—and it can even be fun. The Arizona Science Center, Children’s Museum of Phoenix, Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes, Chandler Parks and Recreation, Play-Well TEKnologies, Power Brain

Training Center, Tesseract School and more make a game out of learning subjects ranging from robotics and engineering to math and geography, working in engaging activities and even things like Harry Potter and Minecraft. No matter what your family’s interests, you’ll find lots to love at the camp fair. Day and overnight camps, as well as camps for all ages—and all budgets— will be exhibiting; with staffers ready to discuss how their programs help kids develop skills, make friends, change their lives or discover new passions. Outdoor and indoor activities will be available to help potential campers explore a wide range of interests Check out the camp fair or visit www.raisingarizonakids.com/campfair, where you can view a full list of camps. Camp registration packets will be available at the fair. Popular camps fill quickly, and some camps offer exclusive offers or discounts on the day of the camp fair only. Visit www. raisingarizonakids.com/camp-fair to register before the camp fair and be entered into a raffle for event giveaways.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION WHO SHOULD ATTEND THIS WORKSHOP Whether you are developing a retirement plan, nearing retirement or have recently retired, you’ll gain access to the latest strategies that help you build, protect and transfer your hard-earned nest egg. We begin by assessing your current financial situation. How can you get to your desired destination without knowing where you are starting? Then we devise a personalized plan to detail all the steps necessary to achieve your retirement objective. A BALANCED PERSPECTIVE If you take your financial signals from the media or websites sponsored by brokerages, you may not be seeing the

true retirement landscape. By contrast, this workshop is designed by a trusted, local and unbiased source to provide you financial education while pointing out any new dangers that can sidetrack retirees in today’s complex financial world. BALANCED FINANCIAL INFORMATION There’s a difference between taking your financial cues from media outlets and learning the basics of retirement planning from a trusted, reliable, unbiased source. This workshop is designed to give you an exhaustive and comprehensive view of financial education while uncovering the many new pitfalls that threaten to derail many retirees in the 21st century.

YOUR INSTRUCTORS Your instructors are Garry Madaline and John Kieber, the Valley’s premier retirement consultants. Garry and John are

the creators and exclusive providers of the C.O.R.E. system.

PROVIDED IN THIS COURSE UNBIASED APPROACH Instead of focusing on a specific strategy or topic, this course takes a more comprehensive view of your retirement. This broad-based approach lays a foundation for proactive planning in an updated, 21st century context. Because of the educational nature of the workshop, no specific financial products are presented or discussed. AN INTERACTIVE CLASSROOM SETTING This course is taught by a nationwide network of instructors. These instructors are financial professionals from your community who bring to their workshops years of experience and knowledge from their careers in personal finance. They often supplement their presentation with real life stories and experiences to help personalize the principles and strategies taught in their workshops. Congratulations to former Mesa Mayor Scott Smith on his appointment last month as interim chief executive for Valley Metro. Or perhaps we should send condolences instead of congrats. Smith is stepping in to oversee an agency whose CEO,expensive Stephen Banta, rehomes lookingprevious back cently stepped down when a local newspaper revealed in an investigation that Banta had spent thousands of taxpayer dollars on questionable expenses. A criminal investigation is underway. Smith was quoted as calling the situation “an aberration,” and promised “calm leadership.” He will serve up to a year, or until a new permanent CEO is named. And congratulations to present Mesa Mayor John Giles for having been named the co-chairman of a new, nationwide effort to end one of our country’s greatest tragedies: homeless veterans. A collaboration of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the White House, the new task force will investigate ways to find permanent housing for vets. Giles will co-chair with New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu. The problem with being a grammar geek is that you see mistakes even when

there aren’t any. Take “Flips Burgers.” That’s the name of a new restaurant on Dobson Road, but when I look at the name I think, with some irritation, “Who flips burgers? Huh? Who? Tell me.” Nothing worse than an incomplete sentence to set me off. (Dang! That’s an incomplete sentence.) I couldn’t settle down until I found out just who flips burgers at Flips Burgers, so I called Elva Graham, who owns the restaurant with her husband, Phillip. “The name comes from our grandkids who couldn’t say ‘Phillip,’ so they called him ‘Grandpa Flip.’” Ah. So it’s really “Flip’s Burgers.” But where’s the apostrophe? Huh? Where is it? OK, I’ll stop now. I still don’t know who flips the burgers at Mesa’s newest homage to America’s favorite food, but maybe I can find out by attending the ribbon-cutting at Flips Burgers & Brew (that’s the whole name), 805 N. Dobson Rd., at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11. The restaurant opened just last month, and the Chamber of Commerce wants to commemorate that by scissoring a strand of shiny red cloth, as is the custom. I haven’t been to Flips yet, but from what I’ve heard, “Juicy Burgers”

or “Yummy Burgers” would also be accurate names. It’s definitely worth the drive. Want to tell the special person in your life that your love for them is astronomical? Then ramp up to Valentine’s Day with a visit to the Planetarium at Mesa Community College from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5. That’s the first Friday of the month, a recurring date throughout the year for the planetarium’s Astronomy Night. Astronomy Night is the one evening per month that the general public can peer through MCC’s massive telescopes to view Saturn’s rings, the Moon’s craters, and that strange shape on planet Pluto that weirdly looks like the eponymous cartoon canine. The price is right—it’s free—and what could be more romantic than singing “Fly Me to the Moon and let me play among the stars” to your beloved, while looking at the

actual moon and stars? In front of about 100 other people? The Mesa Planetarium is located at 1833 W. Southern Ave. Attendance is first-come, first-served. Call (480) 461-7027.

Mesa launches MuniciPAL to help engage residents Residents who want to participate in City Council meetings but don’t have time to attend, or who are curious about City Council issues that affect their home or business, now have a new way to learn more and provide feedback. The City of Mesa is offering MuniciPAL, a Web-based application that makes it easier for residents to engage with the City about items on City Council meeting agendas. Residents simply input an address to view upcoming agenda items that affect both the area around that address as well as citywide issues. Using the built-in commenting system, users are able to ask questions or provide immediate feedback on each item.

MuniciPAL also provides users with an additional method to find their council members and communicate via built in social media links. In 2014, Mesa was selected as one of 10 governments to participate in the Code for America Fellowship. The program pairs innovative local governments with teams of civicminded technologists for a year of service; together the governments and fellows build applications, engage the community, and collaborate with other local governments. MuniciPAL is the culmination of Mesa’s Code for America Fellowship year. Visit the new application online at http://municipal.mesaaz.gov.

Radio broadcasting in Mesa A community of 13,000, Mesa passed the Federal Communications’ minimum population requirement of 5,000 needed to operate a radio station by 1947. Early in that year, two radio stations were founded. On Jan. 6, 1947, KARV began operating in the basement of the Little Theater on Pepper Street. It would “operate daily from 5 a.m. to midnight, presenting local talent programs, transcriptions and shows provided by one of the major networks.” One week later, station KTYL, the nation’s first drive-in station, began operating two miles south on Country Club Drive. Both stations were small, 250-watt unaffiliated stations owned by longtime Mesa residents.

In November 1948, KARV stopped broadcasting and its facilities were purchased by the KTYL group. In 1956, the KTYL radio station was purchased by Gordon Broadcasting stations and the call letters changed to KBUZ. Two years later, the station switched over to rock ‘n’ roll. The station was sold several more times and the format constantly changed throughout the years. In 1976 the station, now with the new call letters KDKB AM and FM, won the Peabody Award for community service broadcasting. Today five radio stations have their license in Mesa—KDKB, KFNN, KIHP, KQCX-LP and KZZP.

It was very scary.” She didn’t care to head to the emergency room in the middle of the night, so the Mesa resident tried her best to sleep, to no avail. “I should have gone to the emergency room,” she recalls. “I waited until the morning and my husband took me to one of the clinics. The doctor said it was no big deal, but I probably should have it checked out at the hospital.” She was having a heart attack. Siedler ended up traveling to Banner Heart Hospital via ambulance. When she arrived at the facility, she was immediately rolled into the operating room where Dr. Suzanne Sorof inserted a stent to open a blockage. “She went in and opened it,” Siedler said. “She basically saved my life.”

“Have a checkup every year,” she said. “Know your sugar. Make sure you’re not diabetic. Symptoms of diabetes are thirst and blurred vision. Have your glucose checked. If you’re borderline diabetic, make sure that hasn’t changed.” Women older than 50, like Siedler, should have stress tests. “I have patients who are very, very thin,” Sorof said. “They can be vegans but their cholesterol can be very high.” She sometimes chalks that up to the familial history. Children of obese parents should see a pediatric cardiologist at a young age because they are at risk of having diabetes. Sorof knows her stuff. As an interventional cardiologist, Sorof runs the gamut of care, from checking blood pressure to fixing a blockage. “We have extra training to learn how to fix things,” she said. Most of the patients she sees in her practice are women because females prefer to see female doctors. “I have a lot of male patients,” she said. “But I take care of a lot of female

School board celebrates January Students of the Month

Mesa Library checks in with modern website

By Heidi Hurst The Mesa Public Schools’ Governing Board honored five outstanding Mesa Public Schools students at the Jan. 12 board meeting. Students from Mountain View High School, and Falcon Hill, Lindbergh, Robson and Whitman elementary schools have been named January Students of the Month. Each month during the school year, students from elementary, junior high and high schools throughout the district are selected to receive the award. Honorees are recognized for quality of character and excellence in leadership, academics, arts, athletics and more. Honored in January were: Brady Dickson, sixth grade, Robson Elementary; Sofia Daniela Gonzalez Flores, sixth grade, Whitman Elementary; Odalis Lopez, sixth grade, Lindbergh Elementary; Seyed Tohid Rajaei Moosavy, senior, Mountain View High School; and Savanna

By Tierra Beasley Out with the old and in with the new. The Mesa Public Library has started the new year with the unveiling of its new, more mobile-friendly website, www. MesaLibrary.org. The changes allow visitors to experience the Mesa Library with ease and in multiple languages. Kate Griffin, librarian III, leads a team that manages the website along with the library’s various social media accounts. She said visitors to the former website often faced difficulties, struggling to find what they needed. “The old website had some technical constraints that kept us from easily updating the website,” Griffin said. “We really wanted a website that was more user-friendly.” To complement the site’s new functionality, the template was redesigned. Patrons and visitors can now access Mesa Library’s content, reservations and programs online more efficiently. Likewise, the logo was past due for a

As videos show students in their daily school lives, their principals or other school representatives read thoughtful tributes aloud. Students take home special plaques and professional-quality portraits, provided by Mesa Public Schools. Winners also receive gift cards from the Mesa Foundation for Educational Excellence. Every presentation ends in proud handshakes, hugs and roaring applause from the crowd. Student of the Month portraits hang on walls of honor in the Board Room and in the lobby of the Administrative Services Center. modern twist. Surveys showed visitors of the Mesa Library viewed the former symbol as generic. Griffin said the new logo, designed by Mark Cornell, the City of Mesa’s graphic designer, features brighter colors and a modern look that gives the Mesa Library its own friendly, welcoming identity. “It has been over 30 years since we refreshed our logo and now it compliments Mesa’s overall branding,” says Heather Wolf, the Mesa library director. The Mesa Public Library plans to keep improving. “Later this year, at the Main Library, we are looking forward to creating a space for teens as well as a new collaborative workspace like THINKspot at the Red Mountain Library.” Mesa Public Library has four branches and is open from Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. They are closed on Sunday.

This year’s show will feature Lynn “Capt’n Crush” Ray’s Guinness World Record attempt for the most 300-yard drives hit in one hour. Since having his record broken by Andrew Frakes of 448 golf balls hit in 2013, Ray will try to reclaim his place in history on both days of the show. Other current records Ray boasts include most golf balls driven in 12 hours (3,781), most golf balls hit with a driver in one hour indoors (669) and most golf balls hit with a driver in 12 hours indoors (4,801).

February 2016

Attendees will also be able to meet representatives from premier golf companies ranging from TaylorMade, Cleveland, Cobra, Callaway, Titleist, Adams, Ping, Wilson and more. These companies will give golfers a chance to test their latest clubs and equipment while offering deals on shoes, clothing and tee times. Golf Fest attendees will also receive a certificate good for a free round of golf at Longbow Golf Club (with tee time restrictions and a cart fee) along with a one-year subscription to Golf Digest. Golf Fest Phoenix is sponsored in part by Welk Resorts, Topgolf, Coulter Infinity, Wilson and Longbow Golf Club. For more information about Golf Fest, visit www.golffestshows.com. Admission is $10 for adults, and children younger than 10 are admitted free. Show hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.

East Valley Moms Brought to you by:

Help kids hone artistic vision at the MAC By Kimberly Hosey Do you have a budding artist on your hands? Check out the Mesa Arts Center. The venue is well known for the world-class entertainment it hosts, but it’s also haven for kids and adults to build expertise in visual arts and crafts, drama, dance and more. Winter classes are already ongoing, with registration through February and a camp in March to coincide with spring break and “Spark! Mesa’s Festival of Creativity.” “We have classes for everyone from 3 to 103,” said Billy Jones, the arts education program coordinator. Mesa Arts Center offers nearly 1,000 classes annually, and over 300 each class session. Historically, he

said, kids’ classes tended to focus on performing arts, while visual arts classes were predominantly reserved for adults—but the center has recently added several visual arts offerings aimed specifically toward younger artists. “That’s the nice thing: It lets kids explore disciplines,” Jones said. “We get a lot of kids that stat out in camps and go on in different disciplines, visual and performing. Kids can find their niche and go from there.” The center has offered instruction for decades, since beginning its summer camps over 25 years ago. After a brief hiatus when they moved to their current location at One E. Main St. in Mesa, the center resumed offering camps and classes in 2006.

Some of their early campers have even returned as instructors. Classes for youth are offered in a variety of mediums; including ceramics, glass, graphic arts,

the individual performing and visual arts disciplines. Students practice and learn discipline, perseverance, creative thinking, self-confidence, creative problem solving, selfexpression and more. Classes regularly contain between five and 10 students, with camps running between 20 and 30 kids for school-year events (winter and spring) and between 40 and 60 kids for summer break camps. “We’re always coming up with new classes; that’s the exciting thing,” said Jones. He especially likes a newer class, “Improv for Kids with Names From a Hat” (with one session starting this month and another session from March to May), in which the popular improv theme is adapted for kids in a familyfriendly exercise in improv acting. It builds confidence and creativity, and it’s just plain fun. Step 4: Let there be light Flip the bottle upside down and carefully insert the string lights into the container, leaving the female and male plugs outside for easy use. I also used a knitting needle inserted into the top of the bottle to pull some lights up into the neck.

Every now and then, as a dedicated Pinterest addict, I look through my pins and realize that I can combine a few small ideas into a bigger project—one that I haven’t seen pass through my feed before. I really miss the warm glow of Christmas lights and I’ve been looking for an excuse to do some decoupage bottles. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it seems that these projects were made to be mashed into one! You will need: Glass bottles, one 35-light LED string per bottle, Mod Podge, Electric drill, 1” diameter diamond drill bit, tissue paper and scissors, paint brush. law talk

expensive homes

Step 5: Display When all of your bottles are full of lights, arrange them. With a little creative use of two sheets of tissue paper, I was able to easily hide the plugs and arrange the bottles on my mantle. They could also work on an entry or coffee table or even as a centerpiece with a table runner to cover the wires. I really like a project that gives me a lot of options.

Step 1: Put a hole in a bottle The hardest part of this project is cutting a hole in the lower half of a glass bottle to make room for the string lights. After a lot of trial and error, I have found that steadying my bottle in a corner of my kitchen sink with a trickle of water running over the cutting area while I gently drill is the best way to cut a hole in a glass bottle without the whole thing falling to pieces. The water keeps friction down along with glass dust, which is something nobody should be inhaling. Make sure to wear gloves and protective eyewear when you’re at the cutting stage.

A Non-Profit Thrift Store Supporting Arizona Chihuahua Rescue

Step 2: Cut the tissue I intended to have a diffused glow in my bottles so I cut white tissue into squares for the base color. I then cut colored tissue into hearts of varying sizes for use. Upon completion, I noticed that the lavender hearts didn’t show up too well. Definitely use bright colors for the hearts and stay away from pastels.

Step 3: Gluing Starting at the top of your bottle, use your paintbrush to apply Mod Podge to a large area of the glass and then apply your base tissue directly onto the wet adhesive. Repeat until you have a layer of tissue covering the entire bottle, making sure to apply more Mod Podge to areas where the tissue overlaps. Next, spread a thin layer of Mod Podge over a flat surface and dip a heart in, just enough to wet the back, and then apply it to the bottle. Repeat with different colors and sizes until you’ve covered as much of the bottle as intended. Go back over the entire bottle with one more layer of Mod Podge to seal the tissue. Set aside to dry. The really big sugar crystal project Every parent has experienced the phenomenon. Your child is given an assignment on the first day of class. It is no normal assignment, but one that requires ongoing work throughout the coming weeks or months. It is the Really Big School Project. Really big projects might involve science, geography, math or English literature, but they all start out the same: with a worksheet detailing the assignment. This includes research requirements, data collection, final format and due date, the latter of which seems very far off until unexpectedly your child finds him or herself with three days to meet the said due date and it is crunch time. Responsible parents (which obviously includes all of us) wouldn’t ignore the due date save for one thing. The assignment worksheet never makes it to the kitchen table. This precious and

important paper that your child was tasked to diligently carry home on the first day of school sits in a crumpled state at the bottom of a backpack or on the floorboards of the backseat of the minivan until it inexplicably makes its way into the laundry pile. Whether you find it before or after the wash cycle is entirely up to luck. In addition to procrastination, really big projects often require poster board and parental participation, which comes after the procrastination threatens a C-minus and parents can no longer ignore the obvious. The work must somehow get done and the assignment becomes a really big family project requiring parental prodding and supervision. This leads to the thing I like best about really big projects: the amount of learning that takes place. Sometimes the knowledge even rubs off on the student.

Still, if the glass is half empty you might as well call it like you see it. Over the years I’ve spent months peering into sugar-water-filled jars looking for any hint of crystals and I’ve yet to see a single grain. Our formations have been as scarce as an A-plus on a failed science experiment and our inadequacies are crystal clear—to me, at least. My son, however, remains optimistic. His glass is half-full, albeit not with crystals. And, although his progress may be lacking, he knows it’s important to complete the really big project with due diligence—crystals or not. He is photographing his water a few times a week to document the lack of any activity or formations. He is writing notes about his crystal deficiencies. He is holding out—with a hope reserved for 13 year olds—that his crystals will grow. And who knows? Maybe they will. I hope they do. I sure do. slices of life

We’ve muddled through our fair share of big projects. My kids have mapped out the entire planet, created a timeline of the history of the world, grown tadpoles, mold and Monarchs (butterflies, not royalty). Our experience with big projects is vaster than the projects themselves. Right now, we are growing sugar crystals. Or, I guess I should say we are attempting the task. We haven’t yet had so much as a sprout. I doubt we will. I should have seen this coming. This isn’t my first sugar crystal dog and pony show. I’ve been through eighth grade science a time or two (or five, but who’s counting?) and I’ve witnessed more than a couple crystal flops. I was tempted to tell my son this a couple of weekends ago as he stirred his sugar water concoction on the stove and chattered about the assignment. “My teacher said it’s easy to grow crystals,” he said. “Only one or two in our whole class won’t get them.” “Prepare to be part of the minority,” I wanted to say out loud. “Failure is most likely in your future.” I mouthed the words silently because a good mom never discourages enthusiasm about school projects.

Landing the helicopter By Eva Dwight Are you a helicopter parent? If you’re not sure, here’s a quick test: a. Do you check your child’s grade portal more than once a day? b. Do you lie awake nights worrying that if your child fails a class, his chances for success in life are over? c. Do you find that more than 50 percent of the conversations you have with your child involve her school performance? If you answered “yes” to the above, it’s time to land the aircraft. I landed mine two years ago, and although it was a slow process, it felt good! I started off with good reasons for hovering. My younger son was attention-challenged and it took many years of patiently training his focus and organizational skills before he was capable of managing independently. Somewhere along the way, though, I

got stuck in the notion that his grades were the most important thing. Not that I would have admitted it. If you had asked me in ninth grade, when he was hitting the wall in math, whether his grades were what I valued most about him, I would have exclaimed, “Of course not!” But my actions said something else. Sometime in his sophomore year, I realized that I was obsessing over grades and seriously inhibiting our relationship. My constant questions about this assignment and that grade and this project and how he did on that test were landing on him with so much negativity, it’s a wonder he didn’t shut down under the pressure. We had a conversation about me backing off so he could experience greater independence, set some parameters about what that would look like, and agreed to a weekly

learn how to do something better the next time. Too much hovering hinders the growth process, and results in young adults who can’t step out into the world with confidence in their own capability to manage challenges. Landing my helicopter gave my son the freedom to make choices, experience the struggle when there was one, and then take satisfaction in his accomplishments. I would encourage fellow pilots to assess your child’s self-management skills and, as soon as possible, start the process of activating your landing gear. check-in on how our process was going. It was hard at first (some weeks, my backing-off rating was a thumbs down, accompanied by “the look”), but as my son pointed out, he was going to have to manage himself in just two more years and he needed to learn how to do that without my constant supervision. I am a strong proponent of teaching children self-management skills, so first and foremost, I would encourage parents to be teaching those skills from a very young age. But at some point, we need to step back and let our kids use those skills without our help. And fail sometimes. Failure is tough to experience (and hard to watch!) but it’s not the end of the world. It’s the new starting point, and an opportunity to

Skyline High School to host SciTech Expo By Laurie Struna Photos by Tim Hacker Teachers and students from Mesa Public Schools are fastidiously preparing for the fourth annual SciTech Expo, Full STEAM Ahead, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at Skyline High School. The Mesa Public Schools Expo is a signature event of the Arizona SciTech Festival and part of a statewide celebration of science technology, engineering, arts and math, or STEAM. Each year Mesa educators anticipate the exhibition and how it impacts lives. The events are designed to entertain and inform spectators of all ages by immersing them in exploration and discovery with hands-on exhibitions, such as flight simulations and pop art rockets, computer science coding opportunities, First LEGO League displays and science fair projects. “STEAM is the keystone to evolving the workforce in Arizona,” said Sean Enright, director of curriculum. Students are encouraged to explore career opportunities in the sciences because they have a profound effect on job creation and Arizona’s economy. New businesses and industries looking to move to Mesa want to know that a workforce is being cultivated. Page 42

“Communication, critical thinking, and technical and collaborative skills are what STEAM education provides students,” said Colleen Howard, K-6 STEAM coordinator. “It better prepares them for success in future job markets. Can you imagine life as a toy engineer, digital animator or music journalist? How about a sports statistician, crime scene investigator or LEGOLAND designer? These are the jobs of the 21st century.” For more information about this family-friendly event, visit www. mpsaz.org/ssrc/scitech-expo. February 2016

Turkey and Spinach Sautéed in Phyllo Dough

What’s Cooking? By Jan D’Atri

Turkey and Spinach Sautéed in Phyllo Dough and Parmesan Spinach Balls He wasn’t handsome. He had no muscular definition except for those bulging forearms. But Popeye had a secret weapon that impressed me as a child. “I’m strong to the finish, ‘cause I eats me spinach, I’m Popeye the Sailor Man!” (Toot! Toot!) Sorry Popeye, I’ve never been much of a spinach gal. (“I yam what I yam and that’s what I yam.”) But

I have come across a few spinach recipes that, as Popeye would say, “blow me down!” Turkey and Spinach Sautéed in Phyllo Dough is one of my favorite go-to recipes for a hearty and healthful meal, and the Parmesan Spinach Balls are a fantastic appetizer for any occasion. If your goal for 2016 is to be strong to the finish with more spinach, these dishes will help get you there.

4 tablespoons olive oil or butter 1 large sweet yellow onion, chopped fine 3 cloves of garlic, chopped fine 1 package (approx 1 1/4 pound) ground turkey 2-3 large fresh mushrooms, shaved or grated 1 (8-ounce) package frozen spinach, drained well 1/4 cup pine nuts, chopped fine 1 egg salt and pepper to taste Sherry vinegar or red wine vinegar 12 sheets phyllo dough, thawed 1/2 cup butter (1 stick) melted

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a small dry skillet, toast pine nuts until golden brown, 1-2 minutes. Do not burn. In a large skillet, sauté onion and garlic in oil or butter until soft and translucent. Add ground turkey and cook for

about 5 minutes or until no longer pink. Shave or grate mushroom into turkey and mix well. Chop pine nuts fine and stir to incorporate. Add drained spinach and egg mixing quickly to incorporate egg before the whites form. Add salt and pepper to taste. For added flavor, sprinkle a splash (about 2 teaspoons) of sherry or red wine vinegar in the mixture and stir. On a parchment-lined baking sheet the size of the parchment paper, lay out one sheet at a time, brushing each layer with melted butter. Spoon turkey mixture in the center of the phyllo dough layers. Fold short ends over the filling and brush with butter. Fold one long end over to cover filling, then roll to hide the seam. Brush with butter. Bake for about 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. Serves 4.

Parmesan Spinach Balls 2 (10 ounces each) packages of frozen spinach (chopped) 2 cups Italian seasoned bread crumbs 1 cup fresh Parmesan cheese (grated) 1/2 cup butter, softened 1 medium sweet yellow onion (finely chopped) 1/4 cup marsala, sherry or any white wine (not too dry) 4 eggs (lightly beaten) Salt and pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a skillet, sauté onions in two tablespoons of the 1/2 cup of butter until onions are soft and translucent. Add wine and spinach, and cook until the liquid has evaporated. Cool down. In a bowl, combine cooled spinach mixture, breadcrumbs, cheese, remainder of the butter, eggs, salt and pepper. Roll and shape mixture into 1 inch balls. Arrange the balls in a single layer on a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

(If no parchment paper is available, use slightly greased nonstick baking sheet.) Bake spinach balls for 12-15 minutes, or until lightly browned. They will hold their shape and may stick slightly to the parchment paper. Serve warm with Dijon or any specialty mustard. These Parmesan Spinach Balls are also delicious in a red sauce like marinara or bolognese.

Tom’s Barbecue is well known for its brisket, burnt ends and pulled pork sandwich. But the 14-year-old restaurant at McKellips and Higley roads is much more than that, according to owner Rick Pawlak, the nephew of founder Tom Ryan. “Sure we have great barbecue, but we have salads and burgers; everything’s homemade. Everything’s fresh cut. You name it, it’s homemade.” The months of February and March mean another dish is popular among diners: the Friday night fish fry. “Once February and March hit, it’s going to get crazy,” Pawlak said. “We have a motto: ‘It’s the best fish fry in the Valley. If you don’t agree, it’s free.’ We know they’re going to love it and they tell everyone about it. That’s why our Friday nights have been so crowded.” comm. spotlight

To accommodate the crowds, Tom’s Barbecue has remodeled the patio, adding three TVs and family-sized picnic benches. “This is different from the other locations,” he said. “We have a full bar with sit-down service. The waitress service is on the weekends and in the evenings.” Specials abound at Tom’s. Happy hour, early bird (Monday through Thursday) and daily specials are available for diners. Early termination of a lease after acts of domestic violence Arizona law provides many rights for victims of crimes. Victims of domestic violence have even more rights and, as a family law attorney, I am always eager to help crime victims learn about rights they did not know existed. Like many states, Arizona has enacted a Victims Bill of Rights. Article 2 §2.1 of the Arizona Constitution grants a victim specific rights in the criminal proceedings against the perpetrator. Arizona law also gives a victim of domestic violence rights in certain civil matters as well. One such right is the early termination of a residential lease. If you are a victim of domestic violence, Arizona Revised Statutes § 33-1318 gives you the right to terminate your lease early. In order to do so: • You must provide written notice to your landlord, along with a copy of either a protective order or a law enforcement report related to the incident. • The acts of domestic violence must have occurred within 30 days of the notice to your landlord. Whether the crime is defined as “domestic violence” is governed by statute. If you have questions about whether the crime committed against you was domestic violence, an attorney

can help you determine whether it is and what rights will apply. If you have paid a security deposit, your landlord cannot withhold your deposit simply because you have ended the lease early under Section 33-1318, though the security deposit can be withheld for other reasons. If you choose to stay at your leased residence rather than terminating your lease early, you also have the option to require the landlord to install a new lock. You need only pay for the cost of installation. If you have been the victim of domestic violence, it is crucial that you take measures to ensure your safety. An experienced attorney can provide you with options which you might not know exist, such as terminating your lease early in order to move to a safer location. Should you find yourself in need of help with any domestic violence matters, please call our after-hours line at: (480) 833-2341. Our attorneys are available 24/7 to assist you. Pamela Sandberg is an associate attorney at Rowley Chapman & Barney. She attended ASU (B.A., 2007) and Suffolk University Law School (J.D., 2012). She is licensed in Arizona and California and is practicing in the areas of family law and criminal defense.
