TRUE GRIT

midst so much plenty, there is tremendous need in Ventura County. Thousands of local residents struggle to obtain the food, shelter and employment necessary for living. Some manage to survive on the fringes without truly thriving; many — through bad luck, a crisis or unmitigable circumstances — slip further into poverty and homelessness. This was the reality long before the coronavirus. And the pandemic has only worsened the situation. Every organization we featured in this month’s issue has seen demand for its services grow. And every one is ramping up its efforts to continue to meet the need. The going is tougher than ever, but these nonprofits are showing their mettle. Leading the fight against hunger in Ventura County is Food Share, with President and CEO Monica White (featured on our cover) at its helm. Food Share has seen food insecurity double since the pandemic. Typically the organization serves 75,000 people every month; since March, that has grown to around 150,000. Many food pantries were forced to suspend operations as well, and Food Share was tasked with both increasing supplies and developing a new, COVID-safe method of distribution. White explains Food Share’s mission and greatest challenges in an enlightening interview. Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation (Giving Back) has also seen the struggles of its clients increase this year. Its aim is

to help the entire family as it deals with the stresses of having a child diagnosed with cancer — from counseling and morale-boosting events to tutoring and financial assistance. COVID-induced layoffs and distance learning have made the lives of some cancer-stricken families even harder in 2020, making the foundation’s services all the more vital. Kay Wilson-Bolton, director of the Spirit of Santa Paula (About Town), knows that homelessness and housing insecurity are issues that have always plagued Ventura County. As pandemic shutdowns have led to increased unemployment, however, a bad situation has only gotten worse. SSP continues to be a force for change for vulnerable individuals, providing more than just a hot meal and a shower. Rent and utility assistance, laundry facilities, help filling medicine prescriptions, advocacy in court . . . SSP’s assistance has lasting impact, restoring their clients’ dignity and giving them the opportunity to flourish. All of these organizations (and many more not covered in these pages) were doing important work years before anyone heard of the coronavirus. In the face of greater demand and more challenges, that work has continued — widening, increasing, adapting as needed. To see such stubborn, unrelenting insistence on improving lives inspires hope, and says a lot about this county: We can’t always keep adversity at bay, but we can choose to be there for each other. – Nancy D. inter at home this year is warmed up with boozy bakes. Whether you plan to serve these on your own table or make care packages for your loved ones to enjoy in their own homes, these recipes both travel well and present beautifully. Unapologetically fruit-forward, these treats have cherry and apple weaved throughout;

White Wine Baked Apples with Cream Yields: 8 Total Time: 25 minutes Active Time: 1 hour, 35 minutes • 8 baking apples, cored • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter • 1 cup dry white wine • 16 teaspoons sugar • 1 cup heavy cream, chilled • 2 teaspoons confectioners’ sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract - Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Place apples in a small roasting pan and add ¼ cup of water. Fill each apple with ½ tablespoon butter. Then drizzle with wine and sprinkle with 2 teaspoons of sugar per apple. - Loosely cover the apples with foil and bake for 45 minutes, until barely tender. Uncover and bake for 15-25 minutes longer, until the apples are tender but still firm enough to keep their shape. - While apples are baking, prepare the whipped cream by whisking the heavy cream, confectioners’ sugar and vanilla on medium-high speed in a chilled bowl until medium peaks form. - To serve, spoon pan juices over warm apples and dollop whipped cream on or next to it.

the flavor profiles, however, never risk being one-noted. By showcasing the fruit in one dessert and then putting it in the supportive role for the following recipes to further highlight the rich chocolate and full-bodied wine a complex and cohesive dessert menu can easily be attained.

Red Wine Chocolate Bundt Cake Yield: 1 Bundt cake Total Time: 30 minutes Active Time: 1 h, 40 minutes • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 3/4 cup cacao powder, unsweetened • 1 1/4 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 cup unsalted butter (two sticks), softened • 2 cups sugar • 2 large eggs • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 1/4 cups dry red wine • 1/2 cup frozen cherries • Confectioner’s sugar

- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prepare the Bundt pan by spraying with a nonstick spray, or buttering and flouring it. - Whisk together the flour, cacao powder, baking soda and salt in a bowl. - In a standing mixer or in another bowl with a handheld mixer, beat the butter and the 1 ¾ cups sugar at a medium-high speed until fluffy. Incorporate eggs one at a time. Add vanilla and beat for 2 more minutes. - In two rounds, alternatively fold in dry ingredients and wine, until just incorporated. - Spread into prepared pan and bake for 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, and then turn out onto a baking rack to finish cooling. - While the cake is baking, combine frozen cherries, the remaining ¼ cup sugar and a small splash of water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a low simmer while stirring and breaking up the cherries until the mixture thickens, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool. -T o serve, pour cherry mixture over the Bundt cake and dust with confectioners sugar

“FOOD IS A BASIC Food Share’s Monica White fights food insecurity in Ventura County.

F

BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER | PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ

ood Share of Ventura County fulfills a vital purpose: Providing food to the many people in the area who need it. That amounts to hundreds of thousands of Ventura County residents since its inception in 1978. Leading the charge today is President and CEO Monica White, who took over leadership in 2017 after 13 years as director of marketing and circulation at the Ventura County Star. Since then, Food Share has seen food insecurity grow, following numerous wildfires and now the COVID-19 pandemic . . . and the organization, its staff and numerous volunteers have not hesitated to rise to the challenge. We spoke with White about food insecurity in the county today, how Food Share is meeting that need and what more remains to be done. VENTANA MONTHLY: Are you from Ventura County originally? MONICA WHITE: My husband and I moved to Ventura 20 years ago to raise our family in a safe and friendly community. Despite the two decades we’ve been here, I still consider myself a newbie. Hearing people refer to the VC Star as the Star-Free Press and meeting the dozens of multi-generational agriculture families has opened my eyes to the deep legacy of Ventura County. I understand that you were originally a member of Food Share’s board before being named CEO. What inspired you to get involved originally? And why did you decide to make the jump to CEO? I first became involved for the simple reason that I believe the mission is critically important. Food is a basic need and it’s not right when people in our own community have to struggle with the stress of food insecurity. Having served on the Food Share board, I knew that the organization was supported by an incredible team of dedicated staff and volunteers. It was truly a privilege to step in, initially as the interim CEO, and I was honored when the position was offered to me on a permanent basis. What sorts of changes did you make, if any, after becoming CEO? When I joined, the organization was facing significant financial challenges, which required some sizable cutbacks and organizational changes. It takes a considerable infrastructure and complex supplychain operation to acquire, store and distribute multi-millions of pounds of donated and purchased food annually. I’m pleased to say that with some well thought out changes, we’ve been able to improve efficiencies in all areas of our operation, to the point now that 96 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to feeding people in need.

NOVEMBER 2020

How pervasive is food insecurity in Ventura County? Even in normal circumstances, an estimated 1 in 6 people in Ventura County experiences food insecurity, meaning they don’t always have access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. That number includes more than 40,000 children. What are some of the biggest challenges with meeting the needs of those who require Food Share’s assistance? Since the onset of COVID-19, the biggest challenges have been purchasing, storing and packing enough food to meet the increased demand. We’ve increased the amount of food we purchase each month from $50,000 to $400,000. That’s been a challenge financially, and also in terms of storage space. We have 36,000 square feet of warehousing space at our Oxnard facility, but with the additional inventory we were bursting at the seams. We were very fortunate that local businessman Lawrence Joss has provided us with an additional warehouse for free, temporarily. We’re using that new space to not only store food but also pack the 250,000 emergency food boxes we’ve distributed since the beginning of April, with the help of the 146th Airlift Wing of the California Air National Guard. Since you became CEO, Ventura County weathered two very damaging fires — Thomas in 2017 and Woolsey in 2018. Did those events impact food insecurity? And if so, how did Food Share respond? The fires did impact food insecurity, but not in any way close to what we’ve seen with the pandemic. We did see a pretty significant increase in the number of service workers seeking our assistance — housekeepers, dog walkers, gardeners, pool cleaners and so on — who saw an immediate drop in revenue when their clients’ homes were lost in the fire. Fortunately, we’ve been able to work closely with our network of pantry partners to ensure there was additional food available to meet the increased need. The COVID-19 pandemic has, of course, changed a lot of things for a lot of people, including in Ventura County. Did Food Share see its client base grow? How were you able to meet the additional need? Before the pandemic, many of the families Food Share served 8

NEED”

MONICA WHITE at the Food Share warehouse in Oxnard. would need supplemental food perhaps two-three times a year. Most were low-income working families. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve seen an unprecedented rise in need in addition to the 75,000 people we typically served on a monthly basis. Our latest estimates suggest the number is closer to 150,000 as low-income families in our community have borne the full brunt of the layoffs and reduced hours in all sectors. In addition to those in the service and hospitality sectors, we’ve also seen an increased need among farm workers, many of whom have had their hours cut as the demand for fresh produce from schools, restaurants and entertainment venues was depleted. How did Food Share’s work change as a result of pandemic-related shutdowns and restrictions? As an organization we exist to help people who are going through difficult times — hunger, after all, is a disaster for every individual who has to experience it, regardless of the cause. Disasters like this pandemic just bring more attention to a problem that exists every day. Of course, what we’re now experiencing is food insecurity on a much bigger scale. At the beginning of the pandemic, nearly 25 percent of our network of pantry partners suspended distribution, which

left a real gap in the community at a time when people needed food the most. We’ve responded by holding more than 200 drive-thru emergency food distributions in locations all over the county — providing food direct to the community. We’ve also significantly increased the amount of food we purchase, to ensure that our pantry partners that have remained open have enough food to meet the need. Ventura County recently moved from the purple to the red tier...are you seeing any changes as a result of that? Not yet. People are still out of work in record numbers, or trying to regain their footing after lost income over the past 8 months. Even if people are now finding jobs, many are dealing with the issue of underemployment — like a woman I met last week, working at a local coffee chain, who can only work a few hours a week because the kids are not in school. She told me what a life saver it is to be able to pick up a box of food at one of our local pantries. I don’t think we’ll see a significant drop in demand for food for many months to come. Until the pandemic is well and truly over and the economy starts to recover, we expect to continue feeding those in need for months or even years to come. Continued on page 12

“I don’t think we’ll see a significant drop in demand for food for many months to come.” What are the biggest challenges of your job? What are the biggest rewards? In many ways, the challenges are the rewards. We distributed 17 million pounds of food last year. It takes a lot of people and infrastructure to do that efficiently, which certainly brings its fair share of challenges. But I’m rewarded by working with a truly awesome team of staff, volunteers and organizational supporters. The biggest reward of all comes from seeing the appreciation of the people we serve. That’s really special. Looking at the big picture of food insecurity, what do you think are the primary problems creating that? Is it the cost of food, the ability to access it, something else? Food insecurity may seem like a complex issue, but at its root, it’s closely tied to income inequality. There’s a perception that we just serve the homeless, but the reality is that the vast majority of the people seeking assistance are the working poor — people who are employed but in low-income jobs and often living expense to expense. To give some context, the median salary for a full-time minimum wage employee in Ventura County is approximately $31,200 a year. After taxes, take home pay is less than $2,000 a month. Even if two or more people in a household are working, if it’s in a low-wage job, that’s still desperately little to live on in Southern California. But sometimes it’s still too much to qualify for food assistance programs like SNAP or WIC. It’s scenarios like these that lead people to seek our assistance. They play out in thousands of homes across the county. Sadly, with increased rates of unemployment and underemployment from reduced hours, the pandemic has only worsened the problem. Based on your time with Food Share, what do you think is necessary for addressing food insecurity on a large scale? Do you see economic assistance or policy playing a role? What kinds of things would keep people from needing the assistance of Food Share and other food banks? That’s a huge question, with no single, straightforward answer. While I would like to think with hard work, collaboration and community support, it’s possible to end hunger, in reality, I don’t see that happening in my lifetime. Are there opportunities to further support those in need with other services that will ultimately help them put food on the table? Absolutely. But for now, our role as the food people is to serve those in need and while others are welcome to figure out how to shorten the line, we’ll be feeding the line.

NOVEMBER 2020

What plans do you have for the future of Food Share? We’ve been in our current location for 35 years. It’s served us very well, but we’re now at a pivotal point where if we’re to continue to serve the number of people in need with the quality of food they deserve, then we need to take a hard look at expanding our facilities. Despite COVID, we’re excited to be moving forward with the studies and analysis to determine what we need to meet the need for the next 40 years. Is there anything else you might like to share with Ventana’s readers about Food Share or yourself? I’d like to share my huge appreciation for the support we’ve received from so many individuals and organizations in our community. As a nonprofit organization, our donors and our volunteers are critical in enabling us to do what we do. Of course, we always need more help and more donations, whether that’s a monetary donation or a food donation! This has been a tough year for everyone, but with continued support from our community no one in Ventura County needs to worry about going hungry. v Food Share of Ventura County 4156 Southbank Road, Oxnard 805.983.7100

t the Wilson family farm in Rochester, New Hampshire, 9-year-old Kay, one of six children, watches her mother feed, for the umpteenth time, “hobos,” men hungry and without homes. As they sit on the back step of the farm house, enjoying plates of franks and beans and maybe a slice of bread, Kay studies them, unafraid but puzzled. These look like decent people; how, she wonders, could they have no place to call home? Fast forward to Christmas Eve 2008, and Kay Wilson-Bolton — now a successful real estate agent based in Santa Paula, and a fire

department chaplain — gets a call regarding a homeless man who has died inside of a local church. And again, she wonders: How could this happen in our town, that someone whose family lives here could become so sick as to die in a church? That was the impetus for a new, potentially pitfall-laden but socially-necessary direction for Spirit of Santa Paula (SSP), a non-profit outreach agency founded by several Santa Paula citizens in 2002 to do “good things” for the local community. Since 2009, SSP has been not simply a haven for local homeless, but a dynamic force for change in the face of a society that too often has closed its eyes to a problem that never seems to go away. SSP serves its homeless, hungry and lonely clients nutritious hot meals, offers them rental assistance and utility payments, advocates for them in Homeless Court, and counsels them on how to become contributors to their community. “We try to give them hope, a touch of grace and humanity and mercy,” says Wilson-Bolton, SSP’s director, whose kind face mirrors the compassion that those in need have come to rely on when they come for help. “Maybe they need new glasses or co-payment for a prescription,” she continues, “or food to get them by, or a bed for an aging parent, or warm clean clothes, or a bus ticket to the doctor. We build their self-confidence so they know that when they walk through our door, someone will be glad to see them. My goal is for us to be that warm fire that people are drawn to.”

NEW FACILITY Since late last year, SSP’s services are administered from an $850,000 former nightclub on East Harvard Street in Santa Paula, purchased and donated by benefactor Naomi Pitcairn, to use as a homeless shelter. The facility — taking the place of SSP’s previous facility in the downtown area — also includes Continued on page 18

ALL IN THE FAMILY Naomi Marrufo, Christine Marrufo, Kay Wilson-Bolton, Sabrina Marrufo and Melinda Palm. The Marrufo family is one of many helped by the Spirit of Santa Paula.

“Naomi’s Kitchen,” from where meals and food packages for those in need are prepared and served. A capital campaign is underway to help finance renovations and additions to the building that would also expand administrative space and provide additional services to the community. That word — “community” — is the touchstone which has long motivated SSP’s mission. “When you help those who need it most, it benefits everyone,” says Bill Simmons, one of SSP’s co-founders and now an advisory board member. “Because we’re all in it together. And as much as technology has become part of our lives, I firmly believe the future of our society will be community, neighbors helping neighbors, people staying connected through the power of networks and collaboration.” That perspective is shared by those who have joined SSP’s outreach efforts. “It’s incredibly important what Spirit of Santa Paula does, because there are so few resources in what is an underserved community,” says Ned Branch, director of Santa Paula’s Blanchard Community Library, who Wilson-Bolton invited to join SSP’s board last year. “You have homeless folks and poor people in your city wondering where their next meal is coming from. If not from us, then who? Where do you send these folks? The homeless are kind of an invisible community, and few people appreciate the magnitude of the problem, especially those in the more affluent parts of town who don’t encounter the homeless. But Kay has done a great deal to raise awareness of the problem.”

GROWING PROBLEM If anything, homelessness has become a greater challenge in recent years, according to the Ventura County Continuum of Care, which annually measures the homeless situation. In 2020, 1,749 individuals were counted as homeless county-wide, the third straight year of increase, up 4.4 percent from 2019 and 51 percent from 2017. The homeless count in Santa Paula declined slightly, to 95 in 2020 from 106 in 2019, but still nearly triple that of 2017. Fillmore, also served by SSP, counted 10 homeless in 202, versus none in 2017. Regardless of count, however, the need to serve the homeless has always been present, a reality to which Wilson-Bolton admits she — like most in her community — was oblivious, until that Christmas Eve 2008. “That,” says Wilson-Bolton, “was our call to action.” A month later, SSP started serving hot meals to the community from a local church. “We were not sure if anyone would come,” she smiles, “but 47 people did. And with the economy in bad shape then, that number grew as the face of homelessness changed.” Homelessness is caused by a variety of factors — economic calamities, family problems, drug use. “In order to serve this population, we had to become educated on who they were, and on what services to them were already available,” she says. For a while, SSP had operated homeless shelters at local churches, with clients sleeping on the floor. Admittedly, some clients’ behavior 8

was “outrageous” or “disruptive,” causing Wilson-Bolton — her kind face notwithstanding — to adopt a hard line when necessary. “There are rules we set down,” she says firmly. “And if our clients break them, we ask them to leave.”

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT The purchase and gift of the Harvard Street facility was one step toward improving SSP’s services. But long before that, SSP had brought in community leaders to address particular needs. Among them was Vern Alstot, retired Ventura fire chief and a 38-year public safety agency veteran, who with business partner George Magaña had founded CarePodz, a company that built shower units out of storage containers. Located just a few blocks from SSP’s Harvard Street shelter, CarePodz supplies shower/hygiene units with wheelchair capability to SSP that accommodate up to seven at a time, serving the homeless at a fraction of the cost. The company has also installed a “COVID containment pod” for SSP. “It’s a way to give someone light back in their eyes,” says Alstot. “Who doesn’t need a pillow, a room, a shower, a home? If you’re upset because you can’t keep your pillow straight on your bed, think about the person with no pillow or bed at all.” “When I was in law enforcement,” he continues, “all I saw was the hard side of the homeless population. Now, having seen many of these folks who are in this situation, often through no fault of their

FRIEND IN NEED: Kay Wilson-Bolton (right) with Spirit of Santa Paula client Monique Justine Johnson.

own, who are really trying to improve their lives, it’s changed my heart.” SSP’s work has also helped change the hearts of the local community, says interior designer Susan Kulwiec, who with her architect-husband John helped launch SSP almost two decades ago and, though “retired,” continue to use their skills in service of the organization’s needs. “Now that the homeless are being helped and have a safe place to go, it’s miraculous to see the change in attitudes toward the homeless,” says Kulwiec, who also does grant-writing and works with a growing number of community donors. “Because there was a time when some in the community, especially in downtown, weren’t as supportive of our work. “But more important is that we are reaffirming the homeless as human beings worthy of respect and dignity. And that’s hard to do until you meet them and learn who they are. Getting to know the homeless people is a gift, because most of them are kind, good people. They are like family.” That speaks to SSP’s Christian-based values, but Wilson-Bolton says any evangelization that takes place from their outreach is merely a by-product, not a goal. “Ours is a service that needs to be done,” she says. “If people see a light in us, if we reflect God’s glory and his love for them, so be it. But our goal is to help lift these people up, give them a way to rebuild their lives — lift, launch and flourish.” And that sometimes has caused friction within the community. “Over the years,” she says, “we’ve been criticized a lot by people who complain, ‘Why waste your time with all those drug addicts?’ Well, unless you know a person’s whole story, you can’t comment on it. You don’t know why they’re in that situation. I hardly know anyone who doesn’t know something about drug addiction or homelessness because it’s impacted their family, friends, neighbors, the whole community. And as a community, we have a choice: We either write them off or we treat them appropriately.” Going forward, SSP’s needs remain plentiful. A $425,000 capital campaign to improve its facility is underway; donations of food, clothing and hygienic supplies are welcomed. And donations of time are in need from volunteers with “hearts of compassion, gentleness and patience,” says Wilson-Bolton, who can offer services — from teaching and training life skills to driving clients to medical appointments. “We need to love and stabilize our homeless, then train and mentor them so they can get their GED, their driver’s license, whatever will elevate them so that they can envision taking care of themselves, rather than being satisfied with others taking care of them.” “This is the most vulnerable and least powerful segment of our community,” Wilson-Bolton states. “They also have a right to flourish.” v

t 15, Andy Casas of Moorpark was diagnosed with an aggressive form of bone cancer (high-grade osteosarcoma). He is now cancer free, but during his lengthy treatment, his family was faced with mounting expenses and stresses like falling behind on mortgage payments. Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation (TBCF) was there for them. The nonprofit caters to those in the Tri-Counties (San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura) who are diagnosed with cancer by age 18. Its formation in 2002 by Nikki Katz was motivated by a mother who endured various heart-wrenching struggles after her 3-year-old was diagnosed with cancer (Ewing sarcoma). While its services vary, TBCF provides support through three core programs: Financial Stability, Educational Advocacy and Emotional Support. Typically, a hospital social worker connects a low to moderate income family to TBCF for the Financial Stability Program’s Direct Financial Assistance fund, which offers up to $5,000 (at initial diagnosis) towards copays, rent, hotel accommodations and other expenses. “And in the unfortunate situation where a child relapses, we’re able to provide an additional $2,500 to help with those costs,” explained Eryn Shugart, Ph.D., Senior Development Director at

TBCF. “In the tragic situation where a child passes away, we have a funeral fund that will pay up to $2,500.” Like Andy, many youth rely on the Education Advocacy programs due to missing school for treatments. TBCF pays up to $1,000 (20 sessions) of tutoring and for the recommended neuropsychological evaluation which can aid in developing a customized plan, and post-treatment evaluation to ensure that the youth is on track educationally. Recently, organizations including TBCF hosted a college prep seminar for teens with cancer and their siblings. It was virtual because, like other nonprofits, it has been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. The now virtual Emotional Support Program consists of some of the most utilized services, including family counseling run by licensed therapists. There are six support groups per month: four for parents (two English, two Spanish), one teen group and one kids’ group. “Cancer will not stop for the virus” is the draining reality relayed by the Belgum family’s oncologist. Their 6-year-old daughter Kasey Lynn has a brain tumor (pilocytic astrocytoma) and despite the importance of physical isolation, in-person care must move forward. Unsurprisingly, families can sometimes feel alone in their ordeal. In TBCF, the Belgums have found some sense of communion through Family Connection Events and Care for Caregivers programs. As of this summer, 20 families and 90 individuals in Ventura County have received TBCF services; that number is expected to increase. In 2019, a total of 851 individuals were served by TBCF, with 55 families receiving Direct Financial Assistance. At the start of the pandemic, TBCF 8

conducted an emergency needs assessment then provided over $7,000 in grocery gift cards to meet the immediate needs of families. Further, restaurant-donated meals and special care packages were distributed for Father’s and Mother’s Day. September was National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. TBCF’s fundraising and awareness event, Gold Ribbon Luncheon, had to be canceled. Instead, the nonprofit fundraised through the Gold Ribbon Campaign with a revised goal of $265,000 (from $430,000). “We’re a healthy nonprofit, but we’d really like to end the year without a deficit so we don’t have to look at potentially changing any of our services,” said Shugart. With the risk of families being waitlisted, TBCF initiated mail

solicitations months ago and has been consistent in its efforts over email, telephone and Zoom. This dedication to a vulnerable population is one of the reasons TBCF’s new executive director, Corey Pahanish, Ph.D. chose the nonprofit. He most recently served as executive director of Bayside Community Center in the diverse and socioeconomically distressed Linda Vista community of San Diego. Despite inheriting that financially strapped nonprofit, he had significant accomplishments, including the building of a 35,000-square-foot public educational facility and community center. Here, Pahanish said he’s enthused to continue building upon what Continued on page 29

he noted as exceptional work and aspires, among other goals, to enhance the work of the staff, grow the board, deepen TBCF’s impact on families in the tri-counties region and to serve families beyond the area. TBCF solely relies on donations but there are other ways to give. Per Shugart, administrative tasks are a key need. Volunteers can pick up a mailing project (e.g. stuffing envelopes) at the TBCF office and complete it at home. “On top of people’s donations, they can also give of their time, their effort — their sweat equity. Spreading the word; word of mouth is the best form of advertisement and so people don’t necessarily have to give of their money but they can share the Facebook or our website, the important work that we’re doing and perhaps there’s someone in their network that has the means to give or this is a priority mission for them to give,” added Pahanish. This month TBCF will host Project Turkey to supply families with Thanksgiving meals. Currently, food donations are restricted so $50 grocery gift cards and Thanksgiving baskets are welcome; all donations must be at the TBCF office by Nov. 16. For Project Holiday in December, a donor sponsors a family and buys all their children holiday gifts. This year, the gift party will be driveup followed by a virtual gathering with other activities. This program is presumably a source of joy for TBCF’s past and

present youth like Andy, Kasey Lynn and Ximena Ortiz of Camarillo, who was diagnosed at 5 years old with kidney cancer (Wilms’ tumor) and whose days are inundated in appointments, treatments et cetera. Ximena and her two siblings got toys last year and although her treatment ended in December 2019, her family has continued to receive virtual support and phone check-ins. “TBCF has served thousands of individuals and the demand for services continues to increase, particularly the need for financial support, especially with today’s cost of living, growing medical costs, challenges in healthcare coverage and also the employment market,” Pahanish said. “So that’s why it matters. And look, the majority of people we’re serving are low income. And now you put on top of that pediatric cancer. I can’t think of something that compounds the symptoms of poverty more than trying to navigate life being impoverished as well as having a child with cancer.” v Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation 3892 State Street, Suite 220, Santa Barbara 805.962.7466 www.teddybearcancerfoundation.org/
