Johnson Group Tactical welcomes girs and women of all ages to be part of its Well Armed Women classes at Ben Avery Shooting Range. (Photo by Karin Johnson)

‘Refuse to be a Victim’ Well Armed Women classes build confidence By Sarah Donahue

K

arin Johnson always longed to create a place for women to connect, interact and grow with each other. “Who knew that it was going to be the firing range,” she says with a laugh. Karin is the gun range safety officer, operations manager and wife of Oz Johnson, founder of Desert Hills-based Johnson Group Tactical gun range, which has offered firearms training classes for around five months and also offers courses exclusively for women, called Well Armed Women. “I really wanted to focus on creating that connection for women within Johnson Group TAC,” she says. “I love that essence when women get together and really support

one another.” Well Armed Women evolved into what it is today around a month after Johnson Group Tactical started its operations. Oz wanted to offer more tactical training classes in the beginning, but the courses weren’t filling up. However, “all of the beginner classes were filling,” and it was women signing up because “they were the ones that really wanted the training.” Knowing how to use and handle a firearm is a vital skill for women to have under their belt, as women are much more likely to be victimized than their male counterparts, she says. “We are the only ones that can really protect ourselves,” she says. “The only other option is to wait for help, so I really wanted

to empower women.” Karin started videotaping and photographing the classes, posting them online to the Johnson Group Tactical website as well as its Facebook page, “and I just started labeling them Well Armed Women, because that’s what they were.” The Well Armed Women courses are focused on education as well as training with safety first. “We never overshadow safety.” Karin didn’t originally intend on being an instructor for the courses; however, her role started to transform into its range safety officer while keeping her role as its operations manager. Her husband has a “natural gift of teaching,” but as a woman, “I can really relate to their fears and their insecurities.” NORTHVALLEYMAGAZINE.COM APRIL 2021 | MAY 2021

FRESH • FUN It can be more challenging for women to manipulate weapons, and she says she’s sensitive to that and meets each student where they are. She always carries her .357 Magnum whenever she goes horseback riding and has previous training experience in escape innovation as well as survival from her time serving in the U.S. Air Force. Karin wants women to know the gun range provides a safe space where women can be educated, trained and encouraged to handle firearms and defend themselves. Well Armed Women’s slogan is “Refuse to be a Victim,” and Karin’s instruction helps people who were once afraid to even hold a firearm walk away from the range feeling comfortable. She trains girls as young as 14 as well as women in their mid-70s, which she says, is “so refreshing to see.” Many women tell her they have a gun in their house but wouldn’t know how to use it if they ever needed it, she says. Karin and her husband realized “we needed to really help women and young girls to feel confident in handling and manipulating their firearms.” She mentions an Annie Oakley quote that says, “I would like to see every woman know how to handle firearms as naturally as they know how to handle babies.” This quote is also posted as a mantra throughout the Well Armed Women website and Facebook page. In the five months Johnson Group Tactical has been in business, 168 students have come to training courses, and approximately two-thirds of its students are women, she says. She emphasized “all of this could never have been created without my husband being the lead instructor.” Oz “has an incredible depth of knowledge” and uses his experience from his 10 years in the U.S. military and 20 years in law enforcement to instruct his students. “He has got a very natural gift of teaching; not a lot of people have that,” says Karin, who met Oz while serving in the Air Force. Oz is getting National Rifle Association (NRA) certification for classes so students can get their concealed weapons permit if they wish to do so, she says. These classes will likely be available by the end of April, she says. Johnson Group Tactical has also recently partnered with the U.S. Concealed Carry

Association (USCCA), an industry leader in firearms education and resources, to “tap into that and pass that along to our students.” She adds that the USCCA has a selfdefense liability insurance that covers anyone in a self-defense situation, whether it’s a handgun, dog, baseball bat, a fight, “a frying pan, anything that you use in selfdefense, this low-liability insurance protects you and covers you.” There are also two new courses on the horizon. The Dry Fire Training class is a shorter, two-hour class (most classes are three hours) with no ammunition required, as it has become quite expensive and hard to come across, she says. This course will provide a way for students to take the knowledge and continue practicing at home. The defensive pistol class gives students real-life scenarios and teaches them how to shoot around obstacles and use firearms in these situations. Students who take this class should already feel comfortable with their guns first before they sign up, as it’s a more intermediate-level course.

Johnson Group Tactical has a referral program, which grants people a free membership to its shooters club after they take their first class, and $15 off each time they take another class. It also offers 15% off to first responders and donates 10% of profits each month to local animal rescues, she says. Karin says it’s been empowering to see women overcome their fear of handling firearms and wants women to realize that “we’re really here to serve them.” “It comes from our heart,” she says. She’s seen women feel incredibly nervous about signing up for classes but reassures each one that “we’re going to meet you at your level where you’re at.” “If you pick up the gun and put it down and that’s all you do, you’ve accomplished something. “ That’s what I really want more than anything, is for women to realize this is truly a safe place for them to really feel comfortable.” Johnson Group Tactical 602-448-8283 johnsongrouptac.com

onor Garland acknowledges he has been an underdog most of his hockey career. The 25-year-old Boston native was the fifth-round draft pick in 2015. Afterward, he kept his head down and quietly worked his way up through the Arizona Coyotes’ system. The result? He has the most goals and points of any Coyotes fifth-round pick. Since his NHL debut in 2018 with the ’yotes, he has registered the most goals on the team — including this delayed season. At the halfway point, Garland led in assists (14), points (22) and plus/ minus (+3). “My whole life I’ve gone under the radar,” the North Scottsdale resident says modestly. “I’m so small I play under the radar. I’ve been cut from countless 12

numbers of teams. I played in the American Hockey League for two years (with the Tucson Roadrunners). I was able to stick. The word ‘underdog’ fits pretty well. There have definitely been a lot of bumps in the road.” The 5-foot-10-inch, 165-pound Garland cracks up at one stat given by the Coyotes: He’s the quickest player to record 20 points for the team since the 2013-14 season. Garland did it in the 21st game. “You’re the first to tell me that,” he says enthusiastically. “They keep some weird stats. It’s great, though. I’ve always been someone who produces offense. That’s my job. If I’m not doing that, I’m not doing my job. I guess I’ve been doing my job.”

Conor Garland quietly becomes the Coyotes’ secret weapon By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski

Hockey is in Garland’s blood. He says a lot of players contend they didn’t have a choice but to play hockey. His childhood was a bit different. “I didn’t give my parents a choice,” he says with a laugh. “As soon as I got on skates, I knew it was for me. My only worry is what do I do after it? I figure I have 10 to 15 years left of playing this game. I just can’t imagine life without it. “I feel fortunate every day that I get to do this for a living.” Garland wanted to play professional hockey since he was 7, when he knew there was such an occupation. “It was a foregone conclusion that’s what I was going to do with my life,” he

says. “I enjoy it so much. I love talking about it, and I skate in the summers even when we’re not playing. I watch other teams. My best friends are also hockey players. That’s what the conversation turns to. It’s all I kind of do.” That may be true, but there are things he likes to do with his girlfriend, Meghan, a Boston Children’s Hospital employee who is working remotely from their

home. They walk along a nearby golf course at night and sneak in a quick putt or two. When there isn’t a pandemic, the couple enjoy the restaurants Fat Ox Italian eatery and Ocean 44. “We’re not big party people,” he says. “We like to keep it simple.” On Twitter, Garland calls himself a “coffee connoisseur” who loves to try local coffee shops when he’s on the road. In

Scottsdale, he loves Dutch Bros. At home in Boston, however, he favors Pour in Norwell, Massachusetts. His uncle, Mike Sullivan, operates a coffee company, Harmon Coffee Micro Roasters, based in Rockland, Massachusetts. “There aren’t a lot of sit-down places here,” he says about the Valley. “It’s definitely different from Boston. They have bakeries and coffee shops made for that. Pour is right on the way to the gym in the morning.” Staying on that course, family is just as important to Garland. His parents, aunts and uncles lived near him during his formative years, and they spent quality time together. “I was at their house almost every day, having dinners or swimming in pools,” he says. “My cousin, as he gets older, is one of my best friends. I have sisters right around the same age. We’re close and in each other’s lives. I have a good support group. My job is a little different than theirs.” A “good support group” is part of Garland’s success, especially because he’s his “hardest critic.” “When I score, I have a bunch of texts from ...Continues on page 14

everyone in my family; same with when we win a game. It’s just good to know I have a lot of people in my corner.” The Coyotes team this year has a similar camaraderie. Garland says it helps that all the young players were drafted around the same years. They attended prospect and rookie camps together. When the Coyotes win, those bonds are strengthened. “We’re all extremely close. They’re some of my best friends,” he says. “I don’t take lightly that I’m getting to play with them. I think that’s huge for us to be so close. We’re lucky. There are only a few teams like this.” Last season, few fans were allowed in Gila River Arena for games. At other arenas, the ambient crowd noise just wasn’t the same. A few teams are still not allowing

fans due to their cities’ COVID-19 restrictions. “It’s an added bonus to play in front of your own fans,” Garland says. “It’s hard when you have no one in the stands and the building is quiet. It feels almost awkward at the time. I love it when fans are loud and they’re appreciative of being able to come to a game. “When you just see tarps hanging over the seats, the only word to describe it is ‘depressing.’ It takes the mood out of the rink. It’s not natural — especially when you’re playing Vegas and Colorado. They’re so loud, and the arenas are so fun to play in. I look forward to the day when everybody can have fans.” 14

The D-backs in-game host, who is adopted, was wondering if any health problems ran in his biological family. “As much as I love my family, there are some things you want to know, like, ‘Genetically, am I predisposed to certain health issues?’” says Bauer, whose adoptive parents, Fred and Peg Bauer, live near Cave Creek. “My mom and dad said, ‘Out of curiosity, why don’t you optin to this to see, for fun, if we have shared genetic material.’ As an adopted kid, I had no expectations. They had no expectations.” Bauer found much more. He found his biological mother and half-sister. “There was a woman back in Illinois, where I was born, who was a 50% match, and there’s a young lady who has a 25% match,” says Bauer, a professor at ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Bauer’s adoptive parents have been “incredibly supportive,” he says. “They made me realize just how lucky I am,” he says. “I didn’t need to tell them that they weren’t being replaced, which was a concern of mine, as we’ve all seen on TV — whether it’s nonfiction or fiction — about families reuniting through interesting means. “It was important to me that my parents knew I wasn’t closing off any part of my life and my amazing family. I was opening a new door that didn’t affect it at all. They mean the world to me. I’m not a parent, but I can see that being a very difficult moment, feeling left out or inadequate. I’m lucky I have parents who are happy for me.” If there is anything similar with Bauer and his adoptive family, it’s their love of baseball. Fred drives the bullpen cart at Chase Field and serves as a Golden Glover, someone who fields foul balls. Peg visits the ballpark to support her husband and son. “It’s been weird,” Bauer says. “I missed being at the ballpark and seeing all the great fans at Chase Field last season. I’m looking forward to the day I’m back in the ballpark with the D-backs fans.”

Mike Bauer, upper left, says his heart is full, thanks to his adoptive family — grandmother, Nickie Reisler, lower left; mother, Peg Bauer, lower right; and father, Fred Bauer. (Photo by Pablo Robles)

LOVING HIS JOB Cave Creek’s Mark Grossman takes on Genoa City By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski

Mark Grossman’s first job was at Harold’s Cave Creek Corral as a student at Cactus Shadows High School. (Photo courtesy of CBS)

ife is funny, according to Cave Creek native Mark Grossman. The Cactus Shadows High School graduate rode dirt bikes and played sports until his mid-20s, when a modeling scout recruited him. Last year, things changed for Grossman. He was nominated for a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Adam Newman on “The Young and the Restless.” Grossman was nominated his first year on the show. The prize ultimately went to co-star Bryton James, who plays Devon Hamilton on “The Young and the Restless.” “To be nominated in the first year was so amazing,” Grossman says. “It was very nice. Before this, I had never done daytime. It’s on five days a week, so the workload is a lot more. We shoot things at a much faster pace. It took a while to get used to the pace and volume.” Grossman said “The Young and the Restless” films five episodes in four days, Tuesday to Friday. He usually takes a break from working on Saturday, but he starts reading scripts on Sundays and Mondays. When Grossman auditioned for the show, he wasn’t sure

of the role. He’s glad he ended up where he did. “Adam Newman is such a great character,” he says. “I love characters like that. He has a push-and-pull relationship with his father. Adam is the black sheep of the family. There’s so much to play. He’s super compassionate and loving, but he has a very dark side. “It’s always fun playing the dark side and stirring up the drama.” The Newman family is the core of “The Young and the Restless.” He is grateful to be a part of a show where many actors and actresses have spent most of their career. “The great thing about soaps is they’re ongoing,” Grossman says. “That’s the exciting part. The stories are ongoing. The stories are always changing as time goes on. I enjoy going to work.” The best piece of advice he received was from co-star Peter Bergman, who plays Jack Abbott on the show. “He’s so nice,” he says. “He told me to just be bold and make bold choices because it’s always going to be a new day in Genoa City.” Grossman says Cave Creek was a great place to spend his childhood. His first job was as a busboy at Harold’s Cave Creek Corral. He tries to return to the Valley as often as he can, generally on holidays and when he gets time off to see friends and family. “When I come home, I love hiking Piestewa Peak,” he says. He had a taste of acting in Arizona when he appeared in the 2016 Tom Sizemore movie “Durant’s Never Closes.” “I had a small part. I was one of the kids in the booth,” Grossman says. “I had never eaten at Durant’s before. When I did that movie, I couldn’t believe how good the food was.” NORTHVALLEYMAGAZINE.COM APRIL 2021 | MAY 2021

Eyewear

The Black Mountain Named after desert animals & plants, local landmarks, and schools in the Cave Creek Unified School District, Cave Creek Eyewear features frames that are trendy without being overstated.

DIZZINESS, HEADACHES, ANXIETY, NAUSEA, DOUBLE VISION.

COULD IT BE YOUR EYES?

Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD) is a misalignment of the eye muscles. The line of sight from one eye is slightly different than the other eye. Therefore the eye muscles have to work harder than they should to correct the misalignment and achieve a single line of focus. Tense and overworked muscles in and around the eyes caused by BVD can be responsible for dizziness, headaches, nausea, anxiety, gait imbalance, neck pain and other unwanted symptoms. Have you seen multiple specialists but nothing seems to help? Neurovisual medicine is a subspecialty of optometry that uses a new approach to treating micro misalignments of the eyes not normally detected on a routine eye exam. Dr. Julie Lam practices at Eye Care North in Cave Creek and is the only Neurovisual optometrist in Maricopa County. She is the 25th doctor in the United States to complete training at the Neurovisual Medicine Institute in Michigan. She has helped many patients, including TBI sufferers, with their symptoms by treating BVD with special lenses. To find out if you have BVD, fill out the screening questionnaire at www.eyecarenorth.com. A staff member will call you with the results and let you know if a Neurovisual evaluation can help with your symptoms.

The Javelina Whether you're a cowboy, an artist, a biker, or a retired snowbird, Cave Creek Eyewear has a frame style that will meet your needs.

The Jewel of the Creek

The Cactus Bloom Cave Creek's small town charm and unique Western flare inspired Dr. Julie Lam, optometrist & owner of Eye Care North, to create eyeglass frames representative of its community and residents. She wanted a frame line with timeless style just like the people of Cave Creek. With this in mind, Cave Creek Eyewear was established in 2019.

EyeWear with local flair When you purchase Cave Creek Eyewear, you are supporting a small, independent, familyowned business & keeping more money in the local Cave Creek economy. You are also supporting local jobs & encouraging a sense of community.

HOME • TRIMBLE’S TALES George Ruffner served several terms as Yavapai County sheriff. (Submitted photo)

Shenanigans at the polls By Marshall Trimble

I

rregularities at the polls on the frontier were common. Here are a few of my favorites: In 1870 in Yuma County, the local Native Americans were bribed to participate in the election by casting their votes. Clad in breechclouts and stovepipe hats, the latter, gifts from one of the candidates for services rendered, they would await their turn at the polls. When the clerk asked their names, the Natives replied, “My name is O’Toole, Hooligan, Malarkey” or some other such Irish name they’d memorized. It was said that some 400 ineligible voters of both sexes turned out to vote. At the time, neither American Indian nor women were allowed to vote. In the 1880 political election in Pima County, Republican Bob Paul was running against Democrat Charlie Shibell for sheriff of Pima County. Paul had a good reputation as a tough lawman, while Shibell was more of an administrator with

a laissez-faire attitude toward criminal behavior. A couple of well-known outlaws in the extreme eastern part of the county, Ike Clanton and Johnny Ringo, managed to get themselves named election officials. With only 50 eligible voters in the district, Shibell received 123 votes and Paul only got one. Paul lost the election, but an investigation of the results later declared him the winner. By that time the new county of Cochise had been established, leaving the outlaws, aka cowboys, with a new county sheriff, a glad-handing polecat named Johnny Behan. Behan turned a blind eye to their nefarious behavior. Sandy Huntington, a scion of the famous California family, was exiled to Arizona because he was powerfully addicted to ardent spirits. He worked at various odd jobs in Prescott, and his hero was Yavapai County Sheriff George Ruffner. He hung around the sheriff ’s office running errands. It was campaign season, and something Ruffner hated to do was campaign. While the other candidates were busy making long-winded speeches, when it was his

turn, he’d step up to the podium and say, “I’m George Ruffner. I’m runnin’ for sheriff,” then he’d sit down. One election, Ruffner was running against a particularly tough candidate. Huntington was well educated, and he decided to help during the polling by volunteering to read the ballots to those voters who couldn’t read — and there were many. He’d say the names of the candidates and then ask for whom they wished to vote. If they replied “George Ruffner,” Huntington would say “Just mark an X in that little box by his name.” If the voter said, “I ain’t votin’ for that scallywag Ruffner, I’m voting for the other guy.” he’d say, “Let’s get rid of that scallywag Ruffner. We’ll cross him out by putting a big X in that little box next to his name.” Ruffner served several terms as Yavapai County sheriff. In 1903, he won a funeral home in a faro game at the famous Palace Saloon on Whiskey Row. From that day hence folks claimed Sheriff Ruffner could offer taxpayers a package deal: He could shoot the bad guy, embalm ’em and bury ‘em, all for the price of one. Expanding to the North Valley Mid-year opening planned for Cave Creek hospital By Keith Jones

C

Carefree Highway will include a 13-bed emergency department, an operating room and eight inpatient rooms, along with X-ray, ultrasound and CT scanner, laboratory and pharmacy services to meet patient needs. The hospital will be capable of caring for patients of all ages, she says, and staff will work closely with first responders and EMS to serve Cave Creek and North Valley communities. “Patients with abdominal or chest pain, sprains and broken bones, lacerations, pneumonia and flu are typical of the types of conditions we expect to see in the emergency department,” says Dr. Brian Hess, medical director of Emergency Services for Abrazo Health. “This hospital will help minimize the need for transfers to larger medical facilities for patients with lower-acuity conditions.” Bird adds, “The surgical suite will be equipped similar those of Abrazo’s larger hospitals. Patients coming to the ER with appendicitis or gall bladder symptoms are examples of surgical cases that can be performed at Abrazo Cave Creek Hospital.” The Cave Creek hospital will be Abrazo Health’s Nurses station outside spathird “neighborhood cious inpatient rooms awaiting hospital,” similar to delivery of beds and equipment. onstruction is nearly complete, and a mid-year opening is planned for Abrazo Cave Creek Hospital near the intersection of Carefree Highway and Cave Creek Road. Abrazo Cave Creek Hospital is a new type of neighborhood hospital, designed with an emphasis on convenience, patient safety, surgical and emergency services. “We are excited to expand Abrazo’s services in the North Valley by creating more access to efficient, convenient medical services of a fully licensed hospital,” says Sarah Bird, RN, BSN, administrative director. “That means Abrazo Cave Creek Hospital will have an emergency room that’s open 24/7 year-round, with on-site imaging and surgical facilities and inpatient rooms for overnight stay.” The single-story facility at 5227 E.

Abrazo Cave Creek Hospital at a glance 

Planned opening mid-2021 13-bed ER  One operating room  Three-bed pre-op/post-anesthesia care unit  Eight inpatient rooms  Imaging suite with X-ray, ultrasound and CT scan  Separate ER and hospital reception/ waiting areas  Approximate 35,000-square-foot building  Address: 5227 E. Carefree Highway, Cave Creek 

Health operates hospitals and physician practices throughout the Valley, including Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital and Abrazo Scottsdale, Arrowhead, Central and West campuses. “Patients prefer to receive care closer to home, and Abrazo Cave Creek Hospital will be the community’s hospital for emergency care, low-acuity surgical services and related care,” Bird says. Hess adds that despite the coronavirus pandemic there is still a need for routine and emergency care. “When care is delayed, there is a greater risk for secondary issues, complications or lengthier recovery times. Hospitals and ERs are safe places for care. Minutes do matter in an emergency,” Hess says. Abrazo Cave Creek Hospital is expected to create approximately 50 jobs.
