Cactus Bowl 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 26 • Chase Field, 401 E. Jefferson Street, Phoenix By Greg Macafee Two teams who have only played each other three times will square off at Chase Field for the 29th annual Cactus Bowl on Tuesday, December 26. The Cactus Bowl is relatively new, despite its nearly three-decade existence. Before settling on the “Cactus Bowl” moniker, the name was altered nine times between its inception in 1989 as the Insight Copper Bowl to its current name in 2015. The name isn’t the only thing that has changed about this spectacle. The bowl has bounced around the state. The first year, Arizona and North Carolina State played in front of 37,237 fans in 1989 at Arizona Stadium in Tucson. It remained in Tucson until 2000, when it moved to Chase Field, where

renovations at Sun Devil Stadium. Last season, Baylor proved it was the best team at Chase Field, beating Mountain West opponent Boise State, 31-12. Thirty-six colleges have played in the Cactus Bowl and big-time names like Le’Veon Bell, Drew Bledsoe, Aaron Rodgers and Tyler Lockett have made appearances. The Big 12 conference has the best overall record in the bowl game, with a 11-5 clip and the Pac 12 conference has the highest winning percentage in the bowl’s history, winning seven off its eight appearances. This year, Kansas State and head coach Bill Snyder will make their fourth appearance in the Cactus Bowl and will take on the UCLA Bruins and top quarterback prospect Josh Rosen. Both Cactus Bowl teams are unranked.

Kansas State Wildcats By Greg Macafee Led by head coach Bill Snyder, the Kansas State Wildcats are making their fourth visit to the Cactus Bowl. In his 19th bowl game of his coaching career, Snyder has been at the helm for the team’s three Cactus Bowl appearances, holding a record of 2-1. Its last Cactus Bowl win, a 31-14 victory over Michigan, was the highest-attended game in the event’s history with 53,284 fans. This season, the Wildcats went 7-5 and finished Big 12 play with a 5-4 clip. They fell to Vanderbilt, Texas, in double overtime, and also lost to TCU, Oklahoma and West Virginia. They wrapped up the season with two straight wins over Oklahoma State and Iowa State. In a teleconference after the bowl announcement, Snyder said he believed the small winning streak will bode well for its Cactus Bowl performance. “I’m certainly pleased with the progress our program made during the latter part of the season,” Snyder says.

“There was kind of the lull in between, which has happened to us for two years in succession and really needs a great deal of attention. It’s a very disappointing time in that stretch in the middle. But as you would hope for and expect and ask of your players, I thought they responded quite well, (and) obviously played well in the last several ballgames of the year.” The Wildcats averaged 32 points a game this season and only allowed their opponents to average 25 a game. Redshirt freshman quarterback Skylar Thompson led the Wildcats down the stretch. He appeared in the final five games, but he only completed more than five passes per game in the last three. His most impressive stat line came against Oklahoma State where he threw for 204 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. He also ran for 93 yards and another score in the 45-40 victory. Running back Alex Barnes led the Wildcats in the backfield with 702 rushing yards and six touchdowns this season, averaging 5.2 yards per carry.
ITS LAST CACTUS BOWL WIN, A 31-14 VICTORY OVER MICHIGAN, WAS THE HIGHEST-ATTENDED GAME IN THE EVENT’S HISTORY WITH 53,284 FANS.

Despite the separation, Fisch is still approaching this game like he has all the others this season. “We are playing this game as the 2017 Bruins, not the 2018 Bruins,” Fisch says during a teleconference. “So, all our focus will be on what we have done, what we’ve built, what we’ve established, and what we’ve done schematically and what we’ve done defensively over the last six years.” The Bruins finished the 2017 regular season with a record of 6-6 and finished fourth in the Pac 12-South Division. They lost their only two games in the season’s second half against ranked opponents in Utah and USC. They beat Texas A&M, Hawaii, Colorado, Oregon, Arizona State and Cal. The good news for the Bruins revolves around star quarterback Josh Rosen. Even though he has been battling a shoulder injury, Rosen will likely be ready to play by the December 26 bowl game. Fisch said Rosen has been participating fully in practices leading up to their trip to Phoenix.
ALL OUR FOCUS WILL BE ON WHAT WE HAVE DONE, WHAT WE’VE BUILT, WHAT WE’VE ESTABLISHED, AND WHAT WE’VE DONE SCHEMATICALLY AND WHAT WE’VE DONE DEFENSIVELY OVER THE LAST SIX YEARS. –HEAD COACH JEDD FISCH “We’ve had two practices so far, and Josh has participated in both of those practices,” Fisch says. “We’re so very fortunate in that regard that he has been able to do that and has thrown the ball very well and has moved well.” Rosen is one of the key cogs in the Bruins offensive plans. He threw for 3,717 yards and 26 touchdowns this season and threw for 421 yards and three touchdowns against their five-point loss to USC. The junior gunslinger will be the player to watch in this year’s Cactus Bowl. 2018 COLLEGE BOWL GUIDE

Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl 3:30 p.m. Friday, December 29 • Arizona Stadium, 545 N. National Championship Drive, Tucson By Greg Macafee In March 2015, the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl was sanctioned as the 41st official NCAA college football bowl game, and the third in Arizona. From the first to second year, the attendance increased 37 percent, and it generated $20 million for Southern Arizona. About $200,000 of those proceeds were donated to local charities. Not only is the Arizona Bowl the Grand Canyon State’s third, it kicked off under unique circumstances. Usually, college bowl games match two teams from opposing conferences. In its inaugural year, the committee selected the Nevada Wolf Pack and Colorado State, two Mountain West teams who faced off earlier in the season. The last similarly scheduled bowl was the 1979 Orange Bowl when Nebraska played Oklahoma. In its second year, the committee

throughout the season. Senior running back LaJuan Hunt, tied a Utah State single-season school record with 10 rushing touchdowns. Defensively, the Aggies were just as good. In the Mountain West, the Aggies defense ranked third in passing yards allowed and senior cornerback Jalen Davis picked off five passes. New Mexico State Aggies By Greg Macafee The New Mexico State Aggies will break college football’s longest bowl drought when they take the field at Tucson’s Arizona Stadium on December 29. However, that isn’t the only interesting storyline coming from this team. They finished the season with a 6-6 regular season record and a 4-4 Sun Belt record, finishing tied for fifth in the conference. They didn’t play one ranked opponent this season and didn’t amass a winning streak longer than two games. They did win their last two games of the regular season, defeating Idaho and the South Alabama Jaguars. Heading into Tucson, they will look to add to the winning streak if they can keep the Utah State offense contained. In every win, except for one, the the New Mexico State defense held their opponents to below 30 points. In that game, the Aggies scored 45 points and allowed the Texas State Bobcats to score 35 points. In 2017, the Aggies were led by senior and Arizona native quarterback Tyler Rogers, who led the offense to

accumulate 4,954 yards. The 6-foot-3 Peoria native threw for 3,825 yards and 26 touchdowns in the 2017 season. He found fellow senior, Jaleel Scott, several times throughout the season. The 6-foot-6, 215-pound wide out was the only Aggies receiver over 500 yards this season, catching 73 receptions for 1,042 yards and eight touchdowns.
JALEEL SCOTT, THE 6-FOOT-6, 215-POUND WIDE OUT, WAS THE ONLY AGGIES RECEIVER OVER 500 YARDS THIS SEASON, CATCHING 73 RECEPTIONS FOR 1,042 YARDS AND EIGHT TOUCHDOWNS. On the ground, the Aggies also had a pair of running backs who contributed throughout the year. Larry Rose III was the premier back, carrying the ball 171 times for 807 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging 4.7 yards per carry. Jason Huntley was the secondary back, carrying the ball 64 times for 403 yards but only found the endzone once. But, the sophomore back from Arlington,
Texas, did average 6.3 yards per carry. While Rogers barely advanced the ball with his feet, carrying the ball 70 times for four yards, he did find the endzone seven times this season. The Aggie offense has been able to average 29.6 points per game this season and the defense has allowed 30.5 points per game – meaning if the Aggies want to compete in this game and not only break the drought, but add a win as well, their defense will need to step up.

produce 31 points per game this season, while the defense only allowed 27 points per game. As a part of that solid defense, the Aggies were ranked third in the Mountain West in passing yards allowed and corner back Jalen Davis picked off five passes in his senior year campaign. The Aggies also had six all-conference awards with Davis and placekicker Dominik Eberle earning first-team honors. They came up with big wins over UNLV, BYU, the University of New Mexico and shutout the University of Hawaii at home. Unfortunately, they ended their season on the wrong foot, falling to Air Force by three points in their regular season finale. The only similar team that New Mexico State and Utah State played this season was the University of New Mexico. In the second week of the season, New Mexico State escaped Albuquerque with a twopoint victory. Utah State did the same, but with a 14-point victory over 3-6 Lobos. It looks like this game will come down to which team can limit its opponent’s offense the most. 2018 COLLEGE BOWL GUIDE

PlayStation Fiesta Bowl 2 p.m. Saturday, December 30 • University of Phoenix Stadium, One Cardinals Drive, Glendale By Greg Macafee Since its inception in 1971, the Fiesta Bowl has been a consistent platform for some of the most exciting games in college football’s history. Last year, the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl funneled its winner to the College Football National Championship as Clemson shut out Ohio State, setting up its National Championship victory over Alabama. The 32nd annual Fiesta Bowl in 2003 was another memorable game; some calling it one of the greatest college football games. In doubleovertime, the Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the Miami Hurricanes, 31-24, ending Miami’s 34-game win streak in the progress. There was also the wild finish of the Fiesta Bowl in 2007 when a Chris Petersen-led Boise State team defeated Oklahoma by using the “Statue of Liberty” play. They took down the Sooners

at University of Phoenix Stadium in front of 73,319 fans. Petersen will return to University of Phoenix Stadium in 2017, this time with the No. 11-ranked Washington Huskies, who take on the No. 9-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions.
A CHRIS PETERSEN-LED BOISE STATE TEAM DEFEATED OKLAHOMA BY USING THE ‘STATUE OF LIBERTY’ PLAY. “We couldn’t be more thrilled on our end,” Petersen says. “You made our whole month and really our season to be able to come to a game like that. Our kids are extremely, extremely thrilled to be a part of this.” While it has had its memorable moments, the Fiesta Bowl has also been a consistent platform for the top players in the country
to display their talents. Veterans include Andrew Luck, Ezekiel Elliott, Blake Bortles, Alex Smith, Adrian Peterson, Sam Bradford, and Deshaun Watson. Watson tore apart the Buckeyes in 2016, rushing for 57 yards and two touchdowns, and throwing for 259 yards and another score. This year’s bowl will feature another crop of star talent. Washington’s Jake Browning has thrown for 2,544 yards and 18 touchdowns this season and Penn State’s Trace McSorley has 3,228 yards and 26 touchdowns, while completing 65 percent of his passes. The two backs that have shared the backfield with these gunslingers are Penn State’s Saquon Barkley, 1,134 yards and 16 touchdowns, and Myles Gaskin, 1,282 yards and 19 touchdowns. Although the winner won’t have the chance to play for a national championship, this one could get interesting.

Penn State Nittany Lions By Greg Macafee The Nittany Lions are a perfect 6-0 in Fiesta Bowl history and they captured a National Championship in Phoenix in 1987, when they defeated Miami 14-10. The 2017 Nittany Lions are looking to extend that undefeated streak in the Fiesta Bowl. They were, at one point, ranked in the top five teams in the nation as they cruised to a 10-2 regular season record and a 7-2 conference record. Their only losses came in back-toback weeks as they battled through a brutal three-week gauntlet of ranked teams. After defeating then-ranked No. 19 Michigan, 42-13, Penn State fell to then-ranked No. 6 Ohio State and then-ranked No. 24 Michigan State. When they played Michigan State and Michigan, the Great Lakes State teams had the No. 1 rushing defenses in the country. The Nittany Lions will encounter that problem once again when they take on the Washington Huskies and its No. 1-ranked rushing defense. “In the Big Ten, I think this is a conference that really prides itself
on playing really good defense,” says Penn State head coach James Franklin. “You look at the rankings and statistics, there are a lot of teams in this conference that are leading nationally. It’s a challenge. I think those challenges also present opportunities to get better and really test yourself and see how good you are. It’s going to be a tremendous challenge.” While the Nittany Lions had their way against the Wolverines, rushing for 224 yards and five touchdowns, they only rushed for 65 yards against Spartans. Behind junior running back Saquon Barkley, the running game has been a strong part of the Penn State offense in 2017, but senior quarterback Trace McSorley has been good as well. The gunslinger from Ashburn, Virginia, threw for 3,228 yards and 26 touchdowns in 2017 and had four receivers with more than 500 yards. But after being able to see Washington in stints over the past season, Franklin says the defense is something the Nittany Lions need to worry about.
“They are big. They are strong. They are physical. They are fast. And they take a lot of pride in how they play defense there,” Franklin says. “They’ve got it rolling on the defensive side of the ball and obviously doing a great job on offense as well.” The Nittany Lions will look to keep their Fiesta Bowl and 2017 winning streaks alive as they take on the Huskies on December 30.

Washington Huskies By Greg Macafee This isn’t the first time University of Washington head coach Chris Petersen has been to Phoenix. He helmed the Huskies for the 2015 Cactus Bowl, and led Boise State past Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, home of the famous “Statue of Liberty” play. When Petersen heard the Huskies were hitting the Fiesta Bowl, he was immediately thrilled. “I can’t tell you how excited and honored we are to come back here,” Petersen says. “There’s no better bowl. I’ve been to a bunch of them. I’ve been to two Fiesta Bowls; we also played TCU down there a few years after we played Oklahoma. When we heard today that we were coming back, there was a lot of jumping around and smiling faces, until we found out that it was James Franklin’s Penn State Nittany Lions. Then we said, uh-oh, be careful what you wish for.” Rightfully so. The Nittany Lions will be the toughest opponent the Huskies have played all season. The only

other ranked team the Huskies played this season was No. 13 Washington State in the final week of the regular season. The Huskies won the game handedly, 41-14. Defensively, this Huskies squad has been strong all season, as they have only allowed two teams to score more than 25 points. Their only losses came in the two games that they didn’t eclipse the 30-point mark offensively.
The high-scoring offense that has averaged almost 37 points per game this season has been led by 6-foot-2 senior quarterback Jake Browning. The Folsom, California, native threw for 2,544 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2017, while only tossing five interceptions on 308 attempts. On the ground, junior
running back Myles Gaskin led the way for the Huskies, rushing for 1,282 yards and 19 touchdowns. Although their offense has been high scoring, one might overlook the stout Washington defense that has only allowed teams to score a mere 14.5 points per game. This matchup has the intangibles to be a great one, pitting two of the top defenses and offenses against each other.

LOCASH set to play Cactus Bowl Live! By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Singer Preston Brust acknowledges 2017 has been the year of his country band, LOCASH. After pushing LOCASH since 2004, Brust and fellow singer Chris Lucas received their first CMA Awards nomination (Vocal Duo of the Year) as well as nods for the ACM Awards (New Vocal Duo or Group of the Year) and CMT Awards (Duo Video of the Year). With a strong reception by Arizona radio programmers and fans, LOCASH will hit the stage for Cactus Bowl Live! at 4 p.m. Tuesday, December 26, at the Phoenix Convention Center’s South Ballroom. “This is going to be a party,” says Brust, during a Christmas shopping trip at Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. “We’re flying out that morning and it is

the day after Christmas. What a better way to party. “We’re going to bring the whole band, plugging everything in. Fans can expect the unexpected. We have a setlist because we have light guys and sound guys, but it’s easy for us to throw in different songs or a cover song.” Prince’s “Purple Rain,” “Tush” by ZZ Top and “Closer” by The Chainsmokers are among their favorite covers. One thing’s for sure, LOCASH will include its gold-certified hit “I Love This Life,” its No. 1 song “I Know Somebody” and the romantic anthem “Ring on Every Finger” in the set. Brust and Lucas have also shared success beyond LOCASH. They broke into music by writing songs for others; their credits include Keith Urban’s 2011 single “You Gonna Fly,” and Tim McGraw’s 2012 song “Truck Yeah.”
“We just try to write the best songs we can,” Brust says. “Sometimes you think you’re writing a song for yourself, but it may touch someone else’s heart more than your own. We’ve been blessed to have a lot of success.” Brust hopes that continues in 2018, when at the stroke of midnight January 1, LOCASH will release its song, “Don’t Get Better Than That.” “It’s going to go to radio in late January, and then hopefully, the sky’s the limit.” LOCASH at Cactus Bowl Live!, Phoenix Convention Center’s South Ballroom, 100 N. Third Street, Phoenix, 480.350.0911, fiestabowl. org/events/cactus-bowl-live/, 4 p.m. Tuesday, December 26, $40-$150, tickets include admission to the Cactus Bowl at Chase Field.
