Little league reaching for ‘big league’ greatness BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON

More than 1,000 eager baseball players participated in Chandler National Little League last year. Each child receives fantastic sports instruction and much more. Players also learn good sportsmanship, playing strategy and proper techniques as well as making lifelong friends in the process. Chandler National Little League’s divisions are broken down according to age: Rookie: ages 4-6; A: ages 7-8; AA: ages 9-10; AAA: ages 10-11; Majors: ages 11-12; Juniors: ages 13-14; and Seniors: ages 13-16. Children who live in zip codes 85225, 85248, 85249, 85249 and 85286 are eligible to participate and a boundary map is available on its website. The All Star season is underway. It encompasses seven different teams: two teams of 12 and younger, one team of 11 and younger, two teams of 10 and younger and one team of Juniors. Doug Brewster is serving his fourth year as president of the Chandler National Little League. He has seen the league grow in the past four years; half of the 1,000 players are 8 and younger, attesting to the strong draw the league continues to have. Brewster does not have a child on the team; he just loves being a part of the sport. “We have a board of 15 and about half of those don’t have kids in the league,” Brewster says. With so many kids playing in the All Star division, which runs through August including State and Championships,

teams have been split into North and South divisions. “It’s fun,” says Brad Moore, the coach of the Chandler National South division. “It gets kind of crazy sometimes, but I love it.” Moore speaks as water balloons went whizzing past his head while the kids readied for their daily practice. The water balloon fight is an annual tradition among the players, and Moore promptly sends five players over to chat. Hunter Barth plays center field and absolutely loves baseball—and school. “I don’t have a problem,” says Barth. “I usually get straight As.” He hopes to one day play for the Cincinnati Reds. Trenton Pallas, who helms second base, has been playing baseball for five years. When asked what he enjoys the most about Chandler National Little League, Pallas says, “I just like playing the game.” He thinks that he might want to play for the Arizona Diamondbacks, but Pallas quickly recants, “Scratch that; the Washington Nationals!” T.J. Sifferman plays short stop and has also been playing baseball for five years. He loves that he gets to practice every day except Sundays with his friends. “I’m going to play for the Angels,” announces Sifferman of his intentions to play for the Los Angeles team. He also singles out his teammates and coaches as his favorite things about league. Third baseman Michael Diaz is having a lively discussion with his teammates about the differences between the Notre

Dame and Harvard college baseball teams. Diaz quickly notes, “I’m going to Oregon for college and then to Toronto. I’m going out of the USA,” he quips of his desire to play for the Blue Jays. Of note, Diaz has been playing ball since he was 4. Tyler Moore, Coach Brad Moore’s son, plays first base and has been dubbed the “team clown.” In his fun and gregarious nature, Tyler exclaims his Major League intentions, “I’d have to play for someone who has a bad first baseman: The Giants.” He also says that when he makes his first million from playing ball, he plans to buy a Ferrari. Some former league players have indeed gone on to the majors. In 2013, Cody Bellinger was a fourth round draft pick for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and

Patrick Murphy was a third round draft pick for the Toronto Blue Jays. Likewise, Field Denny played ball for the league as a youngster and now serves as the division director for the Juniors and is information officer. James Worth Sr. and Tammy Worth watch their son, James Worth Jr., as he practices. They explain the commitment that this level of baseball takes. “He only plays baseball and he plays year-round,” says Tammy. As parents, they chauffeur their son to and from baseball practice, but the team pitches in to create a larger, family environment. “I get off of work and immediately come here,” notes Tammy. Evening meals can be a challenge. “We set something up with all the families and we eat here.”

The payoff is worth it. The North and South Teams routinely place very well in every level of competition. Last year, the 11-year-olds North team won the state championship. In 2003, before there were North and South teams, they made it to the World Series semi-finals and went to the World Series again in 2007. Chandler National Little League has a large variety of team sponsorship opportunities available for businesses that offer exposure at the various playing venues and in print programs. Free SAT workshop offers tips, techniques

New Vistas teacher honored Stacey Trepanier, a sixthgrade teacher at Chandler’s New Vistas Center for Education, is the Patricia Behring National History Day Teacher of the Year for Arizona. Trepanier, a 14-year teaching veteran, was given the honor by Arizona Historical Society Executive Director Megan Gately for her exemplary instruction, creative teaching methods and commitment to teaching students to value history and its relevance to today. The award qualifies Trepanier to compete this summer for the national award. “One of the most extraordinary things about Mrs. Trepanier is that she continues to work with students who have graduated from New Vistas and now attend junior high and high schools in the area,” says Gately. “I’ve never seen such devotion to present and former students.” Trepanier is the developer of an original program, “History Alive,” designed to actively engage students in critical thinking, debate and dramatic reenactments, encouraging creativity and originality. Last year, seven of Trepanier’s students competed in the National History Day program,

Miruthula Jegadesan of Chandler is the winner of a 2013 International EcoHero Award from Action for Nature for her Water for All Club, which has worked to raise funds to build wells in underserved areas of the world, including India and South Africa. On a family trip to India, Miruthula saw the lack of access to safe, clean water resources in rural villages, and was inspired to begin her Water for All project upon her return to the United States. After connecting with Living Water International (LWI), she founded the Water for All Club in her school, which began organizing fundraising events like walkathons and a 5k run, and hosting booths at cultural events. The funds were donated to LWI to build a well for a community in India. The Water for All Club is raising funds to build a well in South Africa, and is readying to identify another community in need of a clean and reliable water

source. Miruthula also plans to help friends establish new chapters of the club for schools in other states. Action for Nature is a U.S.based nonprofit organization recognizing and Miruthula Jegadesan rewarding young people ages 8 to 16 who take action to solve tough environmental problems. Each Eco-Hero Award winner receives a cash prize, a certificate of achievement and other benefits. YMCA program benefits from Walmart donation

Chandler publisher awards perfect scores

The Valley of the Sun YMCA is the recipient of a $50,000 donation from the Walmart Foundation in support of its i-Learn Program. Offered onsite at most Valley of the Sun YMCA locations, the supervised, online curriculum provides education to students struggling in traditional classroom setting at risk of dropping out of school. With the support of staff and self-paced computer classes, i-Learn gives hundreds of students each year the opportunity to earn their diploma or GED through a partnership with Arizona Virtual Academy. The donation will help fund technology and peer support for students. Call 602-404-9622 or visit valleyymca.org for more information.

The 2013 Purple Dragonfly Book Awards awarded 17 entries with 80 out of 80 points—perfect scores— awarding them and two others first-place designations. “This year’s competition was the stiffest ever, with an unprecedented number of entries from all over the world, including England, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, Israel, France, Canada, Dubai, the United States and others,” says Linda F. Radke, president of Five Star Publications Inc., the sponsor of the Dragonfly Book Awards. “We pride ourselves on using a point system, which is the fairest way to judge. If five entries in one category share the same first-place score, for example, we award all five of them first-place certificates rather than draw straws and penalize the other four entries. Plus, a minimum score of 72 out of 80 is required to be considered for a first-place award, 64 out of 80 for a second place and 56 out of 80 for an honorable mention—even if there is only one book entered in a category—when means the scores are truly reflective of
