STRONGER TOGETHER
abatha Ricci is a mixed martial arts athlete with two black belts (Brazilian jiu-jitsu and judo), two world titles, a win in the Brazilian Nationals in Muay Thai and a pile of other achievements to her name. She’s a force to be reckoned with in the Legacy Fighting Alliance and is currently knocking on the doors of the Ultimate Fighting Championship — the big leagues in the MMA world. Her skill, strength, determination and drive have gotten her here, which we discuss at length in our Cover Story. But she didn’t make that journey alone. Helping Ricci develop the skills necessary to compete in this demanding sport are her Brazilian jiu-jitsu coach, Ricardo Miller of Paragon BJJ; boxing coach Joseph “Hoss” Janik of KnuckleHeadz Boxing; conditioning coach Alex Jamora of Mavericks Gym; and wrestling coach Carl Fronhofer of Ventura County Wrestling Academy. Not to mention her manager, sparring partners, PR professionals and others who make up Team Ricci. Because while every fighter heads into the cage alone, they rely on the people in their corner before and after. This fact holds true for all the stories in our Health & Wellness issue. Running is often a solitary pursuit, but one avid marathoner saw strength in numbers in the widespread running community. Runners for Public Lands, founded by college professor Vic Thasiah (Conversation), aims to build a “national movement of runners dedicated to environmental justice, climate and public lands advoca-

cy and conservation work.” The organization’s first event was a habitat restoration project on Earth Day 2019 — and its membership and scope has only grown since. Gondola rowing may not technically be a sport, and a gondolier and their passengers not exactly a team. But Gondola Paradiso’s Mark Schooling explains that it is quite a workout, maneuvering those flat-bottomed vessels around the canals of Channel Islands Harbor. And the gondolier is a key element that contributes to the beauty and serenity of a gondola ride. “We manufacture smiles and happy memories,” Schooling says in our About Town feature. A pack mentality is coded into the DNA of Nectar of the Dogs Wine (Food & Wine). Created by friends who share a love for both dogs and a fine vintage, the boutique winemaking outfit was started as a way to support dog rescue organizations through sales of its highly rated reds, whites and rosés. A close-knit collection of friends often help out, and the gang’s four-footed team members are cheerfully featured in the marketing materials. In this game, everybody’s a winner. Teams aren’t necessarily defined by their number or sport. It’s the sense of coming together for a common cause that turns a group into a partnership, and you needn’t be a world-class athlete to recognize that. Teams are the people we gather around us to make us stronger, healthier, better prepared for the challenges ahead. So here’s to Team You, whoever that may be — let’s find strength and resilience together.

xploring a picturesque maze of canals and bridges via gondola, a charming gondolier in boater hat and striped shirt at the stern, is probably the single most enduring image of Venice — and one of the most romantic visions, period. Lucky for us, one needn’t book a flight to Italy to take part in this most languid and enjoyable of experiences. Gondola Paradiso has transported this idyllic bit of Venice to Oxnard. A boat ride through the waterways is a lovely and serene way to view the splendors of Seabridge and Coral Island in Channel Islands Harbor, and with someone else doing the rowing, there’s nothing to do but take pleasure in the surroundings and those accompanying you on your journey. The man behind Gondola Paradiso is owner and operator Mark Schooling, 50, a professional gondolier — yes, there are such things beyond Venice — with nearly 24 years of experience. While he’s yet to row his way through Italy (it’s on his bucket list), Schooling has established himself as a master of the trade here in California.

A native of San Diego, Schooling has been around water all his life. His father would sometimes pack up the family for a sailing trip, and Schooling surfed and played water polo in high school. He didn’t step onto a gondola, however, until after college. “I got the wrong college degree,” he says with his typically wry sense of humor. He has a bachelor’s degree in fine arts in conceptual art with an emphasis in photography from California State University, Fullerton. “It didn’t translate to work anywhere.” But like all of us, Schooling still needed to pay the bills — and he had no desire to work in a corporate environment. While taking some classes at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, he saw a posting for gondoliers at the job center. “You got hired if you finished training,” he explained. Schooling was off to the docks and has been rowing ever since.

AVE MARIA Mitchell Ellis and Abigail Mendoza in custom-built Maria, rowed by gondolier Tristen Arana.
READING THE WIND
A career as a gondolier offers many advantages. “The job is unique,” Schooling explains. “You get paid to exercise. Everyone’s always in a good mood. There’s no paperwork.” A good gondolier seems to steer the boat effortlessly, but it is actually quite physically demanding — and there’s a steep learning curve. Wind pushes against the boat, and changes the current — anticipating how wind affects a gondola is a skill that takes time to learn. It can also be difficult simply to keep the oar in the fórcola, or oarlock. Strength will help a gondolier move the craft where it needs to go when the conditions are challenging, but Schooling notes that “experience trumps strength and power.” Anyone willing to put in the time has the potential to be a gondolier. The people who tend to excel, however, usually have some sailing experience and enjoy surfing or skateboarding. Comfort on the water, balance and an understanding of wind are helpful. “Wind is your enemy,” Schooling says. “If you understand how wind affects the gondola, you’ll be better prepared to handle the craft.” And the only real way to build the skills a gondolier needs is to row a gondola, as often as possible. California is a surprisingly good place to learn the trade. Schooling likes to quote a colleague, who has said that “gondo-

las are the best kept secret, wherever they are.” And in California, there are actually several gondola operators, spread out between San Francisco and San Diego — including a few in Newport Beach, which is famous for its human-made islets that dot the harbor of Balboa Peninsula. Gondola rides are a major tourist attraction there. According to Schooling, Southern California has the most gondolas outside of Venice. And it was his proving ground. “I was working in Newport Beach for quite a while,” Schooling recalls. Eventually, however, he felt the need to branch out on his own. A chance occurrence brought him to Ventura County. One day, Schooling had a couple of passengers from Oxnard, who commented on the similarities between Newport Beach’s canals and those near Channel Islands Harbor. Intrigued, Schooling looked up the area on Google Maps, and discovered it was the perfect spot for a gondola outfit. He made the move to Oxnard and opened Gondola Paradiso in 2014.
A RT A N D C R A F T
He leased a gondola while waiting for his first boat, Maria, to be completed. She was custom made for him by students at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding in Port Hadlock, Washington. In 2019, he acquired a second craft, which has a history as convoluted as the streets of Venice. 8
In 2011, a group of Los Angeles artists participated in the Venice Biennale, an international art exhibition that has taken place in Venice, Italy, in one form or another since 1895. The project was known as “Venice in Venice,” referencing Venice, California. SoCal artist Billy Al Bengston painted two Venetian-made gondolas — probably older boats that were no longer in operation — that glided down the Grand Canal as floating art pieces. One was done in bold red a la the Ducati brand of motorcycles; another, in bright yellow. As Schooling explains, gondolas in Venice are strictly governed by rules and tradition. One relates to the color: Most are painted black, with the exception of craft used for weddings and funerals, which are white. Gondolas belonging to racing clubs can be black with accents of the team’s racing colors. Bengston’s vibrantly painted gondolas, however, completely flew in the face of tradition, and were allowed strictly as an art project. Even so, the artist still had to get a “special waiver in Venice” to paint them. After the 2011 Venice Biennale, the Bengston gondolas were put on display at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and later sold at a 2012 art auction. Schooling says the yellow gondola went to a collector in San Diego, while the red one was purchased by surfwear company Quicksilver. It was originally going to be used to display t-shirts in a shop, but plans changed and the gondola ended up sitting in a warehouse for years. Sunset Gondola in Huntington Beach acquired it after that, and the company eventually sold it to Schooling in 2019.
The boat still sports its atypical red color, and has been appropriately named Rosa. Oddly enough, fate seems to have steered Rosa — whose pre-2011 origins remain unknown — into the hands of the perfect gondolier. “I think I lucked out,” Schooling says. “She’s a bit old and worn, but gondolas are custom built for each gondolier. Rosa is pretty darn dialed in to me.” He claims that if he was custom designing a gondola for himself, it would be a lot like Rosa. And while her red color would never be permitted in her country of origin, here in Oxnard, “the red is unique — it really makes her stand out.”
P O RT R A I T O F A G O N D O L I E R
Schooling contends that gondoliers are a breed all their own, although he’s hard pressed to explain what, exactly, makes them different. “It’s something ephemeral,” he says. “But when you see the gondoliers all together, you can see that they have it. I honestly can’t put my finger on it.” They do make a point of getting together, when they can. One way is through the U.S. Gondola Nationals regatta, which takes place every other year. It consists of a series of races — sprints and slaloms, solo and team endeavors — that take place Continued on page 14

It’s easier if you can sing.” At the moment, singing is on hold due to pandemic restrictions, and Gondola Paradiso cannot currently provide refreshments, cups, wine openers, etc. But passengers are allowed to bring wine or another beverage along with food, as well as the implements to consume them. Gondolas don’t have tables, however, so it’s best to keep the fare simple.

Gondola rides can be exceptionally romantic. Schooling explains that Gondola Paradiso is very popular with couples, and that sunset and evening are some of the best times to go out. He particularly enjoys accommodating customers for marriage proposal rides — something that Seabridge locals appreciate as well. “People get proposed to, and it’s a nice experience for the people in the boat, and outside of the boat . . . and the gondolier, too. The people who live in the community really like it.” Boats can accommodate up to six people, however, and plenty enjoy sharing a gondola with family and friends. There are several reasons to do so. RUNNING TOWARD SUSTAINABILITY BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER | PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ
Vic Thasiah loves to run. And he loves the natural world. The California Lutheran University professor (who earned his Ph.D. at Oxford) recently merged his two passions into a single philanthropic pursuit: Runners for Public Lands. Founded on Earth Day in 2019, this inclusive community is dedicated to harnessing the enthusiasm and drive of road and trail runners to advocate for the conservation of the lands they travel on foot. Its members raise awareness about climate change and the need to take action, participate in habitat restoration, advocate for environmental and social justice and more. Thasiah spoke with Ventana Monthly about how his work in both religious and environmental studies mesh, his love of running and the outdoors, his goals for Runners for Public Lands and more. Ventana Monthly: Are you from Ventura County originally? Vic Thasiah: My parents are from Malaysia, and I was born and raised in Fresno, California. I’ve lived in Ventura County since 2011. I’m 49 years old, and live in Ventura with my wife Liz and daughter Athena, who’s just about to graduate from middle school. My other daughter Eden just finished her first year of college in New York. What brought you to this area? A faculty position at California Lutheran University in 2011. I’m an associate professor of religion and the chair of the religion department, and an affiliated faculty member in our environmental studies program. You’re an associate professor of religion. Tell us a little bit about what you teach at CLU, and your areas of interest. I teach courses connecting religious studies and environmental studies, and courses on religion and violence, and religion and politics. ested in ways Asian American perspectives on the environment can contribute to environmental stewardship in the United States. Why did you choose that particular specialty? I’m fascinated by the way seemingly non-religious people live their lives in “religious” ways. In other words, I’m really interested in how people organize their lives around what they consider meaningful; and how they perceive, understand and consciously relate to contemporary social and environmental problems and possibilities. I’m also interested in how broad cultural forces, including economic forces, determine what’s meaningful for people, and organize their lives for them. When did you take up running? I ran for exercise as a tennis player in high school, and totally got into the sport while running cross-country for Fresno City College and recreationally at UC [University of California] Santa Cruz. In 2010 I ran my first marathon in Chicago, and have been hooked on longer distances ever since. In 2019 I ran my first ultra, the Chuckanut 50k in Bellingham, Washington, and now primarily enjoy running trails throughout Ventura County and the Los Padres National Forest. How often do you run typically, and how far? Five-six days a week, 35-50 miles per week. How do you maintain your strength and stamina when your demands as a professor keep you busy? Professors can have flexible schedules. Grading and prepping at night can leave some beautiful hours during the day for running. When did you create Runners for Public Lands (RPL), and what inspired you? We launched Runners for Public Lands on Earth Day 2019 with a trail run and habitat restoration event at Harmon Canyon in Ventura. I was inspired by the native runners who connected running with environmental stewardship at Standing Rock and Bears Ears. They ran long distances to protect their land, air, water and communities, and inspired people all over the world to protect human and natural communities from environmental degradation, biodiversity loss and climate change. What do you hope to accomplish with RPL? We plan to organize and mobilize as many road and trail runners in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties as possible for regional and national environmental advocacy and conservation work, and support a national movement of runners across the United States doing the same in their own communities. What role do you think runners can play in conservation, and why? Runners are the largest outdoor recreation group in the United States — 60 million strong — and likely the most diverse and wide-

spread; and, they’re out doing their sport more frequently than any other outdoor recreation group. They’re invested in the human and natural communities through which they run, and can become powerful advocates for the safety, health and beauty of the urban, rural and farther-out environments they run and love.
Tell us about some of the things Runners for Public Lands has accomplished. We’ve organized runner participation, for example, in: support for our county’s wildlife corridor ordinance, public comments on oil and gas leases on regional public lands, the 805 Youth Climate Strike, engaging the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Department of Agriculture on proposed changes to the National Environmental Policy Act, defending Pine Mountain from ill-advised logging, coastal cleanup events, and efforts to protect a West Ventura community from the expansion of a gas compressor station next to an “RUNNERS [are] invested in the human and natural commun elementary school. for the safety, health and beauty of the urban, rural and fartherIn addition to raising money for regional environmental organizations such as Los Padres ForestWatch and for relief work related to the Australian wildfires last year, we’ve hosted a number of educational events for runners to learn about, for example: local flora, fauna and geology; regional environmental stewardship challenges and efforts; national public lands; climate change; our local watershed; composting; and recycling. What are some of the vulnerable areas that you’ve tried to support? What makes them in need of help? Two examples: protecting Pine Mountain and protecting West Ventura. Last year, when the U.S. Forest Service announced plans to thin out over 750 acres of old-growth forest and chaparral on Pine Mountain in Ventura County, threatening these habitats and trails, we took action. The agency released the proposal in late May using loopholes to approve and rush the project without any environmental assessment. With our Indigenous Chumash friends and many others, we advocated for an environmental review. Working with 8
Los Padres ForestWatch, we helped contribute to over 10,000 public comments and fund a defense that was instrumental in stopping progress on logging plans. This year, we joined Ventura’s Westside Clean Air Coalition to stop the poorly planned toxic soil removal and expansion of a dangerous compressor station across the street from an elementary school and after-school club in our community. Efforts are ongoing on this front.
Do you see any parallels between your work as a professor of religion and your environmental advocacy? Yes, absolutely. Religion is about our relationships with ourselves, with others, and with the natural world. For millennia, religious people have reflected on these relationships and have determined what’s good, bad, right, wrong, virtuous, corrupt, etc. with their communities, for their communities and others. Environmentalism, involving human and natural communities, and cultural and natural histories and futures, nities through which they run, and can become powerful advocates parallels religion in considering -out environments they run and love.” these relationships. Given the human and beyond-human stakes of global climate change, environmental degradation, and biodiversity loss, religious people (over 80% of the world) and non-religious people will have to come together on the biggest questions of life. In your Trail Runner magazine profile, there was mention of RPL’s work with Diversity Equity and Inclusion. Can you elaborate on that? Last year, our board of directors went through Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) training, and has committed to requiring all board members to do at least a day-long training. Our primary project has been to recruit a full board of directors reflecting the Ventura and Santa Barbara counties we serve. In April 2021, we completed that recruitment process. Since then we have followed the work of the Running Industry Diversity Coalition (RIDC) to keep learning, and we initiated what became a recently released joint statement with RIDC on runner support for transgender youth (runnersforpubliclands.org/runners-support-transgender-youth/).
Do you engage with the natural world in ways other than running? Nature is wondrous, and I try to enjoy it everyday. My wife, Liz, a passionate gardener, and I take long walks through our community daily. I’m also an avid backpacker, and take California Lutheran University students to Anacapa Island when I can to work on habitat restoration projects with the nonprofit organization Channel Islands Restoration (CIR). What are some of your favorite places locally to go on a run? How about areas outside of Ventura County? I love running up, down and through the Ventura hills, around where I live. Outside of Ventura County my favorite places to run are in Santa Cruz. During college there I fell in love with the natural world on runs through the Santa Cruz Mountains forests. Where do you see yourself and Runners for Public Lands in 5-10 years? I see Runners for Public Lands becoming a national organization, connecting runners to environmental stewardship across the United States. We’re currently working on setting up a national advisory council and creating simple toolkits to support running clubs and cross-country teams across the United States in connecting running with environmental stewardship. What is your pie-in-the-sky vision for yourself? For your conservation work? My hope is that through the work of Runners for Public Lands, kids growing up in the United States in the future will naturally connect identifying as a runner with active involvement in caring for the environmental and social conditions that make running possible and safe for everyone, and their communities flourish. Anything else you’d like to share about RPL? Runners for Public Lands is led by a remarkable board of directors, and three amazing teams working on advocacy and education, events and outreach, and development; and we’re all volunteers. On June 2, 2021, Global Running Day, Runners for Public Lands launched its membership program. To support our work, we encourage everyone to become a member! v

BEST FRIEND Nectar of the Dogs supports dog rescue efforts through wine sales.
D
BY MIKE NELSON
og, as most English speakers know, is God spelled backward, a connection that most dog-lovers will tell you is no coincidence. Dogs, as most dog-lovers know, are perhaps the most loyal companions that roam the Earth. Again, no coincidence. And while “nectar of the gods” does not necessarily refer to wine, Nectar of the Dogs most certainly refers to a young Simi Valley-based company that produces a limited but highly rated selection of red and white varietal wines. Not — let’s be clear about this — for consumption by the aforementioned canine species, but very clearly for their benefit. Each year, Nectar of the Dogs donates a portion of its proceeds to nearly 20 nonprofit animal rescue organizations. “Our mission,” says company co-founder and CEO Melanie Garibay, “is to spread the joy and love dogs bring to our lives by helping those in need find their ‘fur-ever’ family.” And to do so through the production, sale and enjoyment of good wine, a product in which Garibay — by trade, a producer of high-profile beauty and hair trade shows — claims no great expertise, only great love. “I’m not a sommelier, nor do I have a long background in wine producing,” she says. “I just know what I like to drink, and I simply try to share with others my love of wine, along with my love of dogs. And so far, we’ve done pretty well in a fairly short time.”
W H I C H C A M E F I R ST ? Born and raised in Texas, Melanie Garibay was the oldest of six who came to California in the early 1990s, working as a waitress and acquiring a taste for wine. “One restaurant I worked in offered us, at the end of our shift, a glass of wine or a beer,” she says. “Well, I never cared for beer, so I became a wine drinker.” DOG MOMS Melanie Garibay (right) with Kristina Gray, friend and fellow wine lover, at a private event in celebration of Mother’s Day, because “dog moms count too!”

That was around the time she acquired her first dachshund, Clyde, soon followed by a second, Connie. “I am a little partial to that breed — they’re so fun with wonderful personalities,” smiles Garibay, proud to be known among her friends as “Weiner Momma.” “Dogs were the one constant in my life during my 20s and ear-

ly 30s,” she continues. “And as I got into the event producing business, my dogs always traveled with me.” In 2002 she met Todd Sobleski, a production company executive, who owned a husky, Mika. After they married in 2004, Garibay and Sobleski soon welcomed their fourth canine companion, a little stray “doxie mix,” Floyd. The wine operation started around 2015, when Garibay and her friend Donna Graves — whose affinity for Spaniels matched Garibay’s for dachshunds — “had an idea to create and sell wine to raise money to help dog rescue organizations.” They started working with friends involved in wine-producing throughout California, and that led to the creation of their first chardonnay. Nectar of the Dogs Wine’s (NOTDW) limited production effort (56 cases) “sold quickly,” Garibay says, “and we raised $1,000 for All-American Dachshund Rescue and Bark Party. Our friends and family asked, ‘O.K., what’s next?’ And we were inspired. Maybe, we thought, this could be a legitimate business opportunity.” Over the next few years, the duo developed limited edition varietal wines, with a portion of the proceeds supporting numerous animal rescue efforts. Today these groups are “Heart and Paw Partners,” who are guaranteed an annual donation based on NOTDW sales and, in return, promote NOTDW on their respective social media platforms.
RIGBY poses with a bottle of NOTDW’s 100% Chardonnay made from grapes grown on a single vineyard in Lodi.
The dogs who have since passed on — or, as Garibay says, “crossed over that Rainbow Bridge” — remain a source of inspiration and are represented on the company’s labels, as do Garibay’s current canine family members, Braunee and Moose. Graves left the company in 2020, and Garibay currently is supported in NOTDW by longtime friend Monica Pontrelli, who handles marketing and PR, and husband Sobleski, “my biggest supporter,” plus assorted friends who assist in the wine creation process and occasional special events. “We gather, we sample different blends, we take notes, and we decide,” Garibay says. “And it’s really an awesome thing to do wine tasting and research. The people in the wine business are always warm, welcoming and willing to share their experience, which is also what you find among people who love dogs.”

H I G H R AT I N G S But rarely do NOTDW product purchasers drink alone, if product ratings are any indication. Wine Enthusiast Magazine, for one, offered high ratings for each of the following: —CCF MikMurphy: A red blend (80/20 Cabernet/Cab Franc) from Paso Robles’ Estrella and Templeton Gap districts (90 points). —Rosé of Pinot Noir: 100% Pinot Noir Rosé from premium estate vineyards in Santa Barbara County (87 points). —Chardonnay: Produced from a single vineyard in Lodi (86 points). The Tasting Panel Magazine awarded 92 points to the 2017 “3 Dogs White” Vinnie’s Fave, NOTDW’s first white blend from Santa Barbara County (Viognier, Gewürztraminer blend and “a tiny kiss” of late harvest Muscat Canelli).
Also available are 2019 “3 Dogs White,” a new white blend from Santa Barbara County featuring Viognier, Gewürztraminer and Muscat Canelli, and (for Wine Club members only) Rosé of Malbec, from 100% Malbec grapes in Santa Barbara County. “Our approach is to work with boutique wineries in the Central Coast and sometimes elsewhere,” explains Garibay. “We focus on producing approachable, easy-drinking wines that you can enjoy with friends and family, especially as the weather warms up.” The company distributes its wines from a small Simi Valley office, but over the next year Garibay hopes to open a tasting room. “After producing beauty industry shows for 25-plus years, it’s time to figure out the next step,” she says. “Right now I focus on building brand awareness and our mission of rescuing dogs, and it’s a journey that I am really enjoying. I’ve met some wonderful people, I’ve made some wonderful friends, and the older I get, the more thankful I am to be doing something I love — especially when it helps so many dogs enjoy a better life.” v

COVER STORY
BABY SHARK Pint-sized powerhouse Tabatha Ricci is taking the MMA world by storm.
T
BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER here are few physical pursuits as demanding as mixed martial arts (MMA). Competitors engage in hand-to-hand combat, calling upon skills in boxing, jiu-jitsu, judo, karate, kickboxing, Muay Thai, taekwondo and wrestling to bring their opponents down. MMA requires mastering a variety of techniques as well as developing cardiovascular fitness and building up strength and stamina. It’s not for the faint of heart, but it’s a great way to stay in shape. If you’re going the professional route, the standards are even higher. A top MMA fighter requires an exceptional level of skill and fitness, and must employ speed, flexibility, intelligence and power to be a contender in the ring. Rising MMA star Tabatha Ricci, 26, packs all this and more into a deceptively diminutive frame. At just 5 feet, 1 inch tall and 115 pounds, she competes in the strawweight division of the Legacy Fighting Alliance and took part in her first Ultimate Fighting Championship fight on June 5 in Las Vegas. Called “Baby Shark” on the MMA circuit, she’s known as a fierce competitor that’s particularly strong in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and judo (she has a black belt in both) and a force to be reckoned with when grappling on the mat. She has two world titles to her name (a blue belt in Brazil and a purple belt in Irvine) among a list of other wins and titles here and abroad. She currently lives and trains in Ventura. GETTING AIR Ricci training at Black House MMA in L.A.
F RO M B R A Z I L TO J A PA N A native of Brazil, Ricci was born and raised in the city of Birigui, in the state of São Paulo. “I got involved because of my dad [Carlos Salto] — he’s a black belt in judo,” Ricci says. Martial arts have been a big part of her life from a very young age. She started with judo at age 6, learned Muay Thai at 15 and then Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) at 17. She won the Brazilian Nationals in Muay Thai in 2013. Her first professional fight took place when she was 18. “We don’t have a lot of amateur fights in Brazil,” Ricci explains. “My first MMA fight was through my Muay Thai gym.” Her mother expressed concern initially, but her father was very supportive, telling his daughter, “If you’re happy, I’m happy.” She recalls not lasting “more than a minute” and finishing just the first round. Even so, “it was a great experience! The rush of adrenaline — it’s a great feeling.” From that moment, she knew she wanted to build a career in MMA. She competed in Brazil for four years, racking up a series of wins in tournaments across the country. When she was 22, she joined the all-woman martial arts promotion Seiza in Japan. “It was so different!” Ricci recalls. “I learned English there, but I didn’t speak Japanese, so I had to get a translator. It was very, very interesting.” Playing in Seiza was distinctly different from MMA in Brazil. For one thing, it’s a team event — fighters rack up total points for the whole group. There’s no weight class. The rules are a little different, too, and events can be won by submission (“Ippon”) as well as point accumulation and knockout. Japan was an interesting experience and a great training ground, but after a year, Ricci was ready for something different. “People in Japan are not as warm,” she says. “They don’t touch, they’re very serious people. The food was great, though — that was the best part.”
PA R AG O N O F E XC E L L E N C E Ricci’s next port of call was the United States, which she explains has “the biggest tournaments in jiu-jitsu.” She came to Ventura just shy of her 23rd birthday to work with Ricardo Miller of Paragon BJJ. Miller, known as “Franjinha” (“little bangs” or “fringe,” named for a comic book character who had a similar haircut), is one of the top BJJ coaches in the world. He himself has a slew of medals, titles and black belts to his name. He came to the Central Coast in 1996 for the BJJ Pan American and ended up staying, founding the Paragon Academy of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu — first in Santa Barbara in 1998, and then in Ventura in 2002. Ricci doesn’t just train at Paragon BJJ — she also teaches classes there three days a week. And it’s where she got the nickname “Baby Shark.” “I have a friend at Paragon, Jamie [James] Smith. He always called me ‘baby shark’ when I showed up at class — because I’m the

smallest one in the gym, but I can beat up all the guys!” Ricci says with a laugh.
LIFE OF RICCI Miller isn’t the only person in her corner. Ricci’s conditioning coach is Alex Jamora of Mavericks Gym. Carl Fronhofer of Ventura County Wrestling Academy oversees her wrestling training and she boxes with Coach Joseph “Hoss” Janik at KnuckleHeadz Boxing. To stay in fighting shape, she maintains a grueling schedule. She starts her day at 7 a.m. to wrestle, run, do some cardio, etc. In the afternoons, she does strength training and conditioning. She practices her various MMA techniques for about two hours starting at 7 p.m. Fridays are sparring days, which usually take her to Los Angeles (Black House MMA is one of her regular haunts). “It’s very hard to find a girl for a training partner here — same size, same weight class,” Ricci explains. Sunday is her day off, but Ricci views it as active recovery time. She usually does yoga, stretching, massage and/ or meditation. Her diet is exceptionally healthy, with lots of lean proteins, complex carbohydrates, vegetables and “good” fats. “We usually cook very healthy, using coconut oil,” she says. If she’s preparing for a fight, she goes to a training camp for about two months, where the workout regimen is even more grueling and the diet even more exacting — for example, she won’t salt her food, to avoid water retention. Training camp doesn’t just turn contenders into lean, mean fighting machines. Typically, fighters know ahead of time who their opponents are going to be, and the camp is customized to give competitors an edge. They study the other fighter’s style, strengths, key moves, etc. — and try to come up with a winning strategy.
I N TO T H E O C TAG O N Training camps are key to getting a fighter in shape. Ricci, however, had to skip this crucial step for her last event. Manon Fiorot of France — another rising MMA star, nicknamed “The Beast” for her size, strength and striking ability — was set to square off against Ukrainian Maryna “The Iron Lady” Moroz at UFC Vegas 28 on June 5. Moroz pulled out last minute, so UFC organizers called up Ricci’s manager to see if she could sub. “It was just three days [before the fight] and a weight class up,” she recalls. “But it was a good opportunity. Fighting in the UFC, that’s what 8 everyone dreams of. You can’t let the CALM BEFORE THE STORM Ricci takes a breather at Black House MMA. “I think girls are going to take over this sport.”

opportunity pass you by!” Before facing Fiorot, Ricci was undefeated in her MMA career. But with short notice, a bigger (5 feet, 7 inches) and more experienced opponent in the heavier flyweight weight class, she was definitely the underdog. Ricci lost to Fiorot in the second round, but was praised for her solid effort. “I learned so much,” Ricci says. “Nobody likes to lose. It was heartbreaking. But coming back from a loss helps me mentally.” She’s also thrilled that she achieved one of her goals: fighting in a UFC event before her 30th birthday. With her skill, spirit and drive, it’s likely that this will be just the first of many fights in the UFC octagon.
GIRL POWER Asked about the rivalry that develops between MMA fighters, Ricci is quick to say, “I don’t like the trash talk.” “When the adrenaline goes up, you change into a different person,” she continues. “But after that, everyone is friendly . . . At my last fight all my opponents came up to me, we hugged, we cried together. I’m very friendly with my opponents.” While she and Fiorot didn’t talk after the June 5 fight, Ricci praised the victor in an Instagram post — and Fiorot responded with admiration and respect, saying “You are a true warrior.” That small interaction says something about the camaraderie that de-
velops among professional athletes in general, and women MMA fighters in particular. Ricci says that MMA is becoming more popular among women, but the sport still has a ways to go to catch up to the men. “It’s not an easy sport,” she acknowledges. “But it’s actually growing a lot. I think it’s more interesting to watch girls fighting. I think girls are going to take over this sport — but it’s going to take a little bit of time.” Her ultimate goal is to “inspire a next generation, the new girls, to not just fight but have a healthy lifestyle . . . use this sport to make a better world for everybody.” Ricci has plenty of years ahead of her to work on that. At just 26, she has yet to hit her prime, and barring major injuries, women tend to have longer MMA careers than men. “Ladies can fight into their 40s,” Ricci says. “I can’t wait!” v

As kitchens and bathrooms are the first to be remodeled, consider your Landscaping. The investment is minimal ($1,000-$5,000) for a 3x’s return value over your initial investment. Add a fountain, refreshed plantings, a few new trees, improved irrigation and mulching.
PAINTING
A little painting goes a LONG WAY. And painting the exterior and interior of your home is a noticeable improvement. A $5,000-$15,000 investment can generate a 4x’s+ return value on your investment. This home improvement is something you CANNOT AFFORD NOT TO DO.
Tina Comden 805 218 5926
UPDATING
Before selling, you can do small home improvements. Consider new rain gutters, mending a fence, updating electrical outlets, re-do some plumbing. This could be a $5,000-$10,000 investment, yet is a noticeable improvement that keeps bargaining power in your Seller’s court.

Both by the monumental scale of the tapestries and their exceptional technical prowess, John Nava and David Kassan command attention to their subject matter. On exhibit through Aug. 14. 28 West Main Street, Ventura, 805-6449214, www.vitaartcenter.com.
SANTA PAULA ART MUSEUM: MICHELLE JUNG: MAKING WAVES NEW WEST SEPTEMBER SYMPHONY 22 JUNE PINE24-27 MOUNTAIN
Through Sept. 12 | Santa Paula Michelle Jung has spent most of her life looking at the sea. She grew up near the Connecticut coast, and now lives in the Bay Area. Her bicoastal history has inspired works that explore duality, opposition, drama and action: life versus death, chaos versus order, earth versus water. Her vast collection of seascapes painted in oil will stun with their beauty and energy. The museum is open Wednesdays-Sundays, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sundays, 12-4 p.m. 117 North 10th St., Santa Paula, 805-525-5554, www.santapaulaartmuseum.org.

| JUNE 2021
FAMILY FURNITURE June 25-July 18 | Ojai
The Ojai Art Center Theater invites theater lovers back to the stage with its latest production, and its first since March 2020. A.R. Gurney’s play is set in the early 1950s — a time of luncheon clubs, Studebakers and casual bigotry — and centers on siblings Nick and Peggy as they uncover family secrets and painful truths, and explore their own complicated romantic entanglements. A coming-of-age story that takes place during one incredible summer when everything shifts . . . making this the perfect adaptation to bring to the Ojai ACT stage post-pandemic. Directed by Tom Eubanks. $10-20. 113 S. Montgomery Street, Ojai, 805-640-8797. For tickets and more information, visit ojaiact.org.
