Facing the Future with Pasadena 100
No more time to waste
By Ellen Snortland Pasadena Weekly ColumnistAnimal extinction. Out-of-control development. Global authoritarianism. Fossil fuel industries continuing to rape and murder the earth. Climate crisis-fueled wildfires and floods. Apocalypse. Death. Aaaah! I’m not sure if that’s the correct spelling of a tortured scream of agony and urgency, but you get the idea.
In an emergency, mammals are wired to have a flight, fight or freeze response. I’m pretty sure screaming doesn’t fit into any of those three responses. We are in a climate emergency, and although screaming doesn’t help, it will help sound an alarm. Thankfully, I can also point you to a group doing their best to save us from ourselves: Pasadena 100.
effective climate action. We have CalTech, JPL and engaged students, including a Climate Action speakers bureau planned right now. Audrey Ma, a 13-year-old Polytechnic student, gave a powerful speech during the Clean Green rally on Oct. 24, 2022, which was as inspiring as any professional speaker.” (Hey Audrey Ma, if you’re reading this, please also start a movement at your school to scrap plans for a sports complex in the Altadena foothills. Soon, I’ll write another column, an open letter to Polytechnic, about that.)
Before I tell you what Pasadena 100 is, let me introduce its chair, Cynthia Cannady. Ms. Cannady is both calm and a genius. Before coming to Pasadena, she was a lawyer at the United Nations campus in Geneva, Switzerland, heading the intellectual property and new technologies division. The Geneva office is one of the United Nation’s four main global offices: how lucky we are to have someone of this caliber leading such an important initiative in Pasadena!
In our two Zoom meetings, we discussed how Pasadena could fit into a broader climate solution. We’ve all heard the catchphrase, “Think Globally, Act Locally.” With the looming climate catastrophe, we absolutely need to act globally and locally, as there are no longer any traditional boundaries that make sense. Migration, air pollution, atmospheric disruptions and viruses are notoriously bad-mannered regarding borders. Given that, how does Pasadena 100 intend to impact these enormous, intractable problems?
Pasadena 100 is a nonprofit, nonpartisan group of citizens committed to having Pasadena Water and Power (PWP) switch to completely noncarbon-based electricity by 2030.
“What does PWP use now?” I asked Ms. Cannady.
“Almost 50% of our electricity is powered by coal and ‘imported’ from Utah,” she said.
“What!?” I was genuinely shocked. “I’m not a utilities genius, but even I know that coal is not sustainable and damages the atmosphere. I bet many of us here turn on our lights without considering how it’s sourced.” I also learned that both the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) and PWP are transitioning away from coal by 2025 (good!); however, both use so-called “natural” gas to generate electricity (bad!). As benign as “natural” sounds, natural gas is also a highly polluting, harmful energy source. Unless PWP and LADWP … er, light a fire under them, they’ll fall back on excuses to keep using gas, which will further injure the earth.
“Wait a second; given that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) just issued a dire warning of imminent climate disaster, arriving at zero carbon-sourced electricity by 2030 seems kind of pokey, right?” I asked. She agreed.
Again, I was stunned and said, “It always boils down to this for me: the executives of utility companies, oil companies and corporations committing irreparable damage … don’t they have kids and grandkids who take them to task?” Again, she agreed.
“It is the young people who are most likely to take action, which is one reason Pasadena can serve as a model city for other cities to take
Of course, we need to get people of all ages and backgrounds involved. The late Buckminster Fuller said, “To change an existing paradigm, you do not struggle to try and change the problematic model. You create a new model and make the old one obsolete.” Utility companies and corporations: please take that advice to heart … quickly!
Petroleum and coal have already been obsolete for decades. We have the technology to create a whole new paradigm. What we need is the will and the courage to proceed.
Every year on April 22, we commemorate Earth Day, a day to mark how precious and fragile our planet is. This year, John Muir High School is having a science fair from noon to 5 p.m. It’s free and a perfect opportunity to see how our young scientists and inventors are doing in saving the world. All are welcome to see the latest in science, technology, engineering and math. Please attend! John Muir High School Early College Magnet, 1905 Lincoln Avenue, Pasadena.
If you can’t go to John Muir on Saturday — and even if you can — visit pasadena100.org. They have engaging activities and many ways to participate. At the very least, sign up for their newsletter. I wish there were a nonnautical way to shout, “All hands on deck!” Come to think of it, Buckminster Fuller also created the phrase “Spaceship Earth.” Therefore, it truly is “All hands on deck!” Which is so much more elegant than “Aaaah!”

Commission selects design concept for Burbank terminal
By Pasadena Weekly StaffBurbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority commissioners voted April 17 to move forward with a design concept for a replacement passenger terminal.
“The commission looked at what would be a ‘statement of arrival,’” explained Emily Gabel-Luddy, Burbank commissioner and president of the BGPAA.
“‘The Icon’ (design concept) affords that statement with its roofline and its deep shadow-giving cover over the plaza and arrival point, but also how it goes across the face of the parking structure.”
The project is dubbed Elevate BUR. “The Icon” is one of three concepts presented to the commission for consideration. In making their final decision, commissioners weighed comments from a public survey, feedback from design charrettes held earlier in the development process, and guidelines of the development agreement the BG-
PAA has with the city of Burbank.
The design concepts were generated by Corgan, the company providing architectural services for the project. The firm is part of the project’s design build team: Holder, Pankow, TEC, Joint Venture (HPTJV). Jacobs Project Management is providing project management services. Voters in Burbank approved the replacement terminal in 2016. It will be in the northeast quadrant of Hollywood Burbank Airport. The 355,000-square-foot facility will have 14 gates and will resolve long-standing safety and acces-
sibility issues with the current terminal, Gabel-Luddy said.
“It is a credit to the observations, questions and challenges put forth by our commissioners that this important step of our new replacement passenger terminal was unanimously taken today,” Gabel-Luddy added.
“The project management and design team were equally responsive.”
Also at the April 17 meeting, Hollywood Burbank Airport Executive Director Frank Miller shared the following statement:
“The authority is aware of the ninth circuit court decision and no construction will commence until the FAA complies with the decision regarding the construction noise issue and in any event, construction is not scheduled to commence until spring 2024.”

A Rich History
Tournament House tours resume in Pasadena
By Laura Latzko Pasadena Weekly Staff WriterThe Tournament of Roses headquarters Wrigley Mansion has a rich history. It was once owned by chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr. and his wife Ada. Upon Ada’s death in 1958, the family donated the house to the city of Pasadena to be used by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses.
After a three-year, pandemic-dictated hiatus, the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association started to offer tours again April 6. They will continue at 2 p.m. Thursdays through Aug. 31. Tours are free, but reservations are required to visit the home, also known as Tournament House.
The property’s 4.5-acre gardens are open to the public. There, they can see over 1,500 varieties of roses, camellias and annuals.
David Eads, executive director/CEO of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, said the flowers are blooming late this year because of cold weather and rain. Very soon, they are expected to be in full bloom, which he said is a sight to behold.
“The garden is awash in an array of colors. It’s really beautiful, and the fragrance is really stunning,” Eads said.
As part of guided tours, visitors learn more about the house’s history as well as the Rose Bowl Game and Parade.
Eads said there are regular requests to tour the mansion, especially from groups. The association feels it is important to open the house to the public and educate them about it.
“We say this is not just the tournament’s house. It’s the community’s house,” Eads said.
Eads and other staff work in offices in the back side of the Wrigley Mansion. He said going to work on such a historic property is meaningful.
“I don’t think any of us take it for granted. It’s very much a special place to be,” Eads said.
The tours are led by members of the organization’s Heritage Committee, who serve in two-year terms. They also lead private tours and are available as resources during community open houses and events.
Sometimes, volunteers from the tournament auxiliary group, comprised of retired members, will also assist the Heritage Committee.
“Some of them have worked with our Heritage Committee for years and are very well-versed in the house, our traditions and the history of the Tournament of Roses,” Eads said.
Inside the mansion, 32 operating committees meet throughout the year.
The association’s 935 members all serve on operating committees.
Some members have volunteered their time for 25 to 40 years. Eads said that members come from all backgrounds and get a chance to be exposed to different facets of the Tournament of Roses.
“You might be a schoolteacher by day, and with the tournament, you are putting together our equestrian event, working with the horse groups,” Eads said.
“Or you could be on our formation committee, and you are helping to set up blockades. … It just runs the gamut. You might be on food services, and you are responsible for feeding all of these volunteers. … You really get exposed to a lot of different opportunities that you would never get exposed to in your normal life or normal career.”
The Rose Parade was started in 1890 by the Valley Hunt Club. The parade grew so quickly that a separate organization, the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association, needed to be formed in 1895 to organize the event.
“We have a long history of being here. We grew up with Pasadena over the last 135 years,” Eads said.
For many years before moving to the Wrigley Mansion, the Tournament of Roses was headquartered in the chamber of commerce building in Pasadena.
Wrigley Mansion’s are themed around their functions. There are rooms for the director, the president, the grand marshals and the royal court. One of the rooms, known as the game room, is centered around the Rose Bowl game and its history.
The Rose Room, originally a patio that has been enclosed and turned into a meeting
space, can hold around 100 people.
Groups, such as the royal court, can use their rooms for different purposes.
“As we select our royal court, that’s where these young women meet after school and get ready to go to an appearance. It’s their hangout space in between whatever they are doing,” Eads said.
Inside the mansion, visitors will see historic photos showing the rooms as they were in the 1920s and ’30s, trophies from the last 100 years, crowns from past royalty, and historic photos and artifacts from the Rose Bowl game going back to 1902.
Inside the mansion’s dining room, there are original pieces of furniture from the Wrigley estate on Catalina Island.
Most of the furniture are replicas of pieces that were in the house in the past.
Elements such as the flooring and fireplace mantels are original.

veloper George Stimson, who worked on the design with his son, architect G. Lawrence Stimson.
Construction on the house began in 1906, and it wasn’t completed until 1914.
Eads said construction was held up because of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. Following the earthquake, all construction efforts were focused on San Francisco.
The Wrigley mansion was constructed of concrete and steel, with earthquakes in mind.
When George Stimson found the house was too big for him, he sold it to the Wrigleys.
The Wrigleys often spent their New Year’s in Pasadena.
Ada also lived in the house during the final 11 years of her life.
The house was remodeled in 2001 by the American Society of Interior Designers. Different designers each chose a room and redecorated it.
The Wrigley Mansion, which is a three-story, 21-room, Italian-Renaissance-style home, is in an area once filled with mansions known
“There were some homes that were bigger. When the Wrigleys bought the tournament house, there was a house next door where the gardens are now. He eventually bought that lot, tore down that house and built the gardens,” Eads said.
“He believed that landscaping, particularly trees, would increase property values, since most of the wealthy newcomers that were moving here and building these homes were from the East Coast, where they were

For Ada, the house gave her a front-row view of the Rose Parade.
“This was her favorite place to be on New Year’s Day. She could watch the parade lineup in front of her house,” Eads said. TOURS

Whimsical and Macabre
Tim DeRoche, Daniel González offer hidden gems in new book
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive EditorTim DeRoche is working to revive the witty art of children’s poetry.
As a tribute to the light verse of Shel Silverstein and Ogden Nash, DeRoche released “Tales of Whimsy, Verses of Woe” in January. The book by the La Crescenta author combines the nonsensical and the macabre. The illustrated book of verse is extravagant and minimalist, with black-andwhite illustrations reminiscent of “Where the Sidewalk Ends.”
“People who love children’s literature will find hidden little gems in there that they will recognize,” DeRoche said.
“We’re riffing on famous poems and, in some cases, famous writers. These poems com-
bine a dark sense of humor with this whimsical point of view and humor. Hilaire Belloc, who’s a writer from the 19th century, wrote ‘Cautionary Tales for Children,’ which are hilarious poems about children who misbehave.
“There’s a similar book by Dr. Heinrich Hoffmann, who’s the most popular children’s author in Western Europe. It has wonderful illustrations. Some people think those books aren’t for kids, but if you read those books to a kid, the kid gets it’s a joke. This is my contribution to the genre.”
DeRoche and his illustrator, Daniel González, will make an appearance at the Lamanda Park Branch Library as part of the Authors & Their Journeys Series at 3 p.m.
Saturday, April 22.
DeRoche has written two Amazon best-
sellers, including “The Ballad of Huck & Miguel,” a modern-day retelling of Mark Twain’s “Huck Finn,” set on the Los Angeles River during a rainstorm.
“My first book was a retelling of ‘Huck Finn,’ and the story was picked up by KPCC,” he said. “We ended up getting national media, which was just ridiculous for a first novel. It was so much fun to write that book.”
This is DeRoche and González’s third project together. González is a printmaker and artist based in Los Angeles. He studied at UCLA’s School of Art and Architecture in the Design Media Arts program and founded a printmaking and letterpress studio in the community of El Sereno. He practices in Alhambra. The LA native’s family comes from the small town of El Teúl in Zacatecas, Mexico.
“I met him, and he did all of these gorgeous prints for ‘The Ballad of Huck & Miguel,’” he said. “He did the original illustrations for ‘Tales of Whimsy, Verses of Woe.’ They’re penand-ink drawings instead of prints. They’re hilarious. They’re gorgeous, and they add so much character to these poems.”
DeRoche wrote “Tales of Whimsy, Verses of Woe” as an antidote to the serious books lining bookshelves. “Tales of Whimsy, Verses of Woe” was released on Jan. 24, the week of Lewis Carroll’s birthday.
“This book is really inspired by the writes whom I love, like Lewis Carroll, Roald Dahl, Shel Silverstein, these kids’ writers who combine the whimsical and macabre,” he said.
“They all have a darker edge, but they’re doing it in the name of fun. Kids love that writing. You don’t see a lot of books coming out with those types of stories.”
DeRoche said he’s proud of the success he’s had with his books.
WHEN: 3 p.m.
“I’ve put my heart and soul into it, and Daniel has put his heart and soul into it, too,” he said.
“The partnership we have is so rewarding. He’s really a genius. He’s literally a genius. To be able to work with him on these books and create these beautiful books, it’s been a wonderful journey. The Pasadena community has been so wonderful and so receptive. It’s been gratifying.”
They founded an independent press to publish the books.
“One of the things I’ve been able to do is follow my heart and write a book that’s fun and whimsical and that people are going to enjoy reading,” he said.
“The publishing industry, as a whole, gets caught up in these trends and fads. I think there’s a certain value in being independent.”

PSHA distributes $900K with Gifts & Grants
By Luke Netzley Pasadena Weekly Deputy EditorPasadena Showcase House for the Arts has awarded $900,000 to 75 regional nonprofits through the organization’s Gifts & Grants program. It’s the largest amount distributed in PSHA’s 75-year history.
“We started 75 years ago basically as a supporting organization to the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra,” Gifts & Grants chair Suzanne Hart said. “At the time, it was the group ladies who decided they were going to do something good, and this is what they decided to do. (They) started out very small, fundraising over the years.”
The organization has since raised a total of over $25 million that’s been invested into music education and arts enrichment in schools, youth orchestras and music therapy programs throughout the San Gabriel Valley and greater Los Angeles area.
“Music is our mission, and we focus on symphonic music and music education for youth and other individuals, people who are less fortunate in our communities,” Hart explained. “Our benefit fundraiser, the Pasadena Showcase House of Design, has been so successful over the years that we began expanding into supporting other organizations in the area that have our same mission and are promoting and fostering music programs for youth.
“We do things like buy band equipment for the local high schools or elementary schools, we fund music teachers in schools locally, we fund concerts, and we fund musical therapy for different nonprofit organizations in the area.”
This year’s Gifts & Grants recipients include LA Phil, South Pasadena Unified School District, Academy of Music for the Blind, Alhambra Educational Foundation, Altadena Rotary Charities, Arcadia Music Club, Center Theatre Group, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Colburn School, California State Summer School for the Arts, Five Acres, Glendale Youth Orchestra, Global Arts Corporation, La Cañada Flintridge Educational Foundation, LA Opera, LACHSA Foundation, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Children’s Chorus, Los Angeles Music and Art School, Los Angeles Youth Symphony Orchestra, National Children’s Chorus,
Pasadena Conservatory of Music, The Pasadena Chorale, Pasadena Senior Center, San Gabriel Valley Music Theatre, The Music Center, The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, Assistance League of Los Angeles and Young Musicians Foundation, among others.
“We’re just really thrilled to be able to do this for the community,” Hart said. “It is this support of the community that makes us successful and able to fund all of these wonderful arts, music, cultural programs that are really important. … (These) programs are part our cultural well-being.
“I just think that it says a lot for how much people care about each other and want to support each other. We’ve all been through some really challenging times, and the community’s come through. … We’re just really pleased to continue on. We’re an all-volunteer organization; none of our members are paid. Everyone’s giving from their own time, talent and treasure to make this successful.”
In addition to the Gifts & Grants program, PSHA holds three annual music programs: the Music Mobile, which has introduced orchestral instruments to over
125,000 third-grade students; the Instrumental Competition, which has awarded over $650,000 in prizes to young musicians; and the Youth Concert, which has brought nearly 250,000 fourth-grade students to Walt Disney Concert Hall to watch the LA Phil.
Hart’s hope is that PSHA’s volunteer membership will continue to expand to accommodate the growth of the organization’s programs and funding.
“The saying that ‘it takes a village’ is so true,” she said. “My hope for the future is we engage more people to join our organization and contribute to the development of music appreciation, music education and therapy and all of the performances and concerts that we support. … I’d love to see the organization grow from all aspects.”
PSHA will formally celebrate its 75th anniversary at the Pasadena Showcase
House of Design Premiere Night Gala on Friday, April 21. The Showcase House will be open to the public Tuesdays through Sundays from Sunday, April 23, to Sunday, May 21, with tickets available at pasadenashowcase.org.
“It’s extremely important (to invest in the arts) in a number of ways because it helps bring people together,” Hart said. “We’ve all learned that being together is certainly a lot better than being alone and isolated, so for our emotional well-being, it’s important. I think it brings joy to people, which is another really important element.
“Especially for those underserved and individuals who have other challenges in their life, if they can share and participate and be witness to some of this music and art and culture and theater, it’s just empowering and makes people feel a lot better.”

Supporting Artistic Ecosystems
The Mike Kelley Foundation awards $400K in grants
By Leah Schwartz Pasadena Weekly Staff WriterLike many, arts organizations struggled in the face of the pandemic, threatening the vital artistic ecosystem of Los Angeles. Recognizing this, the Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts began the Organizational Support Grants, an unrestricted grant designed to support these organizations during the pandemic’s bleakest moments.
Earlier this month, MKFA announced the 16 arts organizations set to receive grants totaling $400,000, with each grant award ranging from $10,500 to $30,000, targeting small to mid-size institutions. The institutions chosen reflect various artistic disciplines, including dance, poetry, performance, music and multimedia art. The grantees were selected based on upcoming projects and need, reflecting the growing number of in-person events and performances.
The organizations set to receive the grant
include the Armory Center for the Arts, Avenue 50 Studio, Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center, Feminist Center for Creative Work, Fulcrum Arts, Human Resources,
The Industry, LA River Public Art Project, Los Angeles Filmforum, Los Angeles Nomadic Division, JOAN, LA Artcore, Los Angeles Poverty Department, Pieter Performance Space, Vincent Price Art Museum Foundation and Velaslavasay Panorama.
the late artist Mike Kelley, who began the organization in 2007, by awarding organizations that reflect Kelley’s innovative and multifaceted artistic process.
One grantee, Fulcrum Arts, will use the grant to support its project “Procession,” a collaborative performance with Indigenous artists tracing Los Angeles’ geographic and cultural memory through the legacy of the Los Angeles River (Paayme Paxaayt).
“We are so grateful for the Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts’ continued support for experimental and interdisciplinary arts organizations,” remarked Robert Crouch, executive and artistic director of Fulcrum Arts. “Los Angeles has long established itself as a proving ground for the radical and the new, and the Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts is one of a handful of funders that have made a long-term investment in speculative and transgressive art practices.”
Other projects supported through the grant include artist Kang Seung Lee’s current solo exhibit, “The Heart of a Hand,” at the Vincent Price Art Museum. The show celebrates the late Goh Choo San, a Singaporean-born choreographer who passed in 1987 from an AIDS-related illness at 39.
Similarly, Avenue 50 Studios will present a new show, “The Politics of Portrayal: Three Generations of Chicana Portraiture in Los Angeles.” The exhibit features six prominent painters, including Barbara Carrasco, from in and around Los Angeles.
Grant applicants were selected by an independent panel featuring local artists, writers and educators like Clara Kim, chief curator and director of curatorial affairs at MOCA; Taylor Renee Aldridge, visual arts coordinator at California African American Museum; Michael Ned Holte, faculty at CalArts, independent curator, and writer; Alexandro Segade, faculty at UC San Diego and Los Angeles-based artist; Clara Kim, chief curator and director of curatorial affairs at MOCA; and Rosten Woo, Los Angeles-based artist.
“The impressive list of 2023 grantees all share the Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts’ core values of risk-taking and provocation. Each grantee has accomplished critical work in the face of tremendous challenges over the past few years, and we are encouraged by their movement and commitment toward furthering safe in-person programming throughout Los Angeles County,” said Mary Clare Stevens, executive director of the foundation. “We are heartened that these organizations also foster resources and spaces for communities, and it is our honor to award unrestricted funds to these 16 vital organizations.”
The grant honors the life and legacy of
Mike
“We are thrilled and honored to receive the seed funding from the Mike Kelley Foundation for Arts, which will enable us to kick-start the House of Yùn exhibition at LA Artcore,” stated Pranay Reddy, executive director, LA Artcore. “This grant represents an important step in our efforts to secure funding for the project, and it provides critical support to us as we begin the research and development process. With the foundation’s support, we can shed light on the little-known history of the Chinese diaspora community and foster meaningful dialogue about the challenges and triumphs of the diaspora experience. We are deeply grateful for this investment in our vision and look forward to continuing our fundraising efforts to fully realize this project’s scope and impact.”

Restoration Concert
Concert to feature violinist and friends
By Pasadena Weekly StaffThe Restoration Concerts Committee of the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library will present a Restoration Concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 23, featuring violinist Roger Wilkie and Friends.
Tickets will be available at the door for $25. The concert will be held in the historic Library Community Room at 1115 El Centro Street in South Pasadena. Mask wearing is optional but strongly recommended.
In addition to Wilkie, violinist Anna Landauer, violist Connie Kupka, cellist David Speltz and oboist Leslie Reed will be play music by F. Schubert, Arnold Bax and A. Dvorak.
A much-sought-after chamber musician, Wilkie was a founding member of the Angeles String Quartet, principal second violin with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and concertmaster of the Long Beach Symphony.
In addition, he was solo violinist with Camerata Pacifica, on whose series he played hundreds of concerts as recitalist and chamber musician.
Currently, Mr. Wilkie is a member of the critically acclaimed Pacific Trio. He has also appeared at Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, La Jolla Summerfest and Mainly Mozart Festival.
A concertmaster for the Hollywood studio orchestras, Wilkie has served in that capacity for many of Hollywood’s leading composers. Since 2005, he has served as concertmaster for the motion picture scores of legendary composer John Williams.
Currently the principal second violinist of the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra, Ana Landauer has been with the company since 2001. At age 6, she began her violin studies at the Tchaikovsky Academy of Music in Yerevan, and was a winner of several national violin competitions in her native Armenia.
Winner of the Elizabeth Harper Vaughn International Competition in Tennessee, Landauer has also appeared at the Tanglewood Music Festival, the Shady Side Music Festival, the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, and served as concertmistress and guest soloist for the National Repertory Orchestra in Colorado.
Kupka has been a member of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra for many years. Kupka’s lifelong passion for chamber music (and orchestras) inspired her and her future husband, cellist David Speltz, to form their own ensemble, the Arriaga Quartet.
The group went on to win the grand prize in the prestigious Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition and toured with a broad range of offerings from the quartet repertoire.
Speltz has been active for years on many Los Angeles chamber music series in Los Angeles and participated in summer festivals throughout the United States. Speltz was a member of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra under Sir Neville Marriner and served as the principal cellist of
the California Chamber Orchestra under Henri Temianka. In 1989 he served as principal cellist for the German conductor Helmuth Rilling at the Bach Collegium Stuttgart.
Reed joined the LA Opera Orchestra in 1996. In 2009, music director James Conlon appointed her to the principal oboe chair, a position she currently holds.
In addition, Reed is principal oboe of the Los Angeles Master Chorale Sinfonia. Her past positions include principal oboe of the Los Angeles Mozart Orchestra, Glendale Symphony, Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra and the Long Beach Symphony. She has appeared as guest principal oboe with the LA Chamber and
Hollywood Bowl orchestras and Pasadena and San Diego symphonies.
The Restoration Concerts Committee, a committee of the nonprofit The Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library, strives to bring world-class music at an affordable price to the concertgoers in South Pasadena and surrounding communities. As the name suggests, net proceeds from the concerts provide for restorations, enhancements and other benefits to the South Pasadena Library and Community Room.
There will be one more concert this season after the April 23 concert. On May 28, the quartet in residence, The New Hollywood String Quartet, will return.

National ‘Wetzel’ Day
By Pasadena Weekly staffPasadena-based Wetzel’s Pretzels will celebrate National Pretzel Day — which it dubs National Wetzel Day — by giving away an original pretzel to each guest who visits a location after 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 26.
Last year, the brand sold enough pretzels to wrap the globe three times. This year’s event is themed “Wetz Go,” inviting guests on the go to celebrate with Wetzel’s at one of the brand’s many flexible store formats.
“We’ve always been passionate about delivering a super-premium product as part of a super-premium guest experience,” said Kim Freer, Wetzel’s Pretzels chief marketing officer.
“That’s why we believe in celebrating
National Wetzel Day by inviting our fans to enjoy a free, scratch-made pretzel just for showing up. There are no strings attached here — we simply believe in delivering handheld happiness to each guest, one salty snack at a time.”
For the second year, the pretzel purveyor will also send corporate staff to bakeries nationwide to support its franchise partners and crew members during the celebration.
“National Wetzel Day is a great opportunity for us to connect with all members of the Wetzel’s Pretzels extended family,” Freer said.
“Not only does it allow us to engage with our fans, but it also provides the opportunity to support our franchise partners, who deliver on the brand promise of
fresh-baked, high-quality snacks each and every day. We’re proud of the strong, iconic brand we’ve built, and as we continue to grow, it’s important that we maintain a culture built on trust, camaraderie and teamwork. Working alongside our
franchise partners on one of the busiest days of the year is a prime example of our commitment to shared success.”
To honor its SoCal roots, the brand will partner with a professional sand castle builder to create a 14-foot branded sand sculpture in celebration of National Wetzel Day. It’s also hosting a TikTok contest where fans can win beach-inspired branded merch. Content creators simply show how they #WetzGo and tag @wetzelsofficial to be entered to win a Wetzel’s beach cruiser and other prizes.

A Tournament of Ease
Club hosts its annual West Coast Kubb Championship
By Leah Schwartz Pasadena Weekly Staff WriterWith longer days and warmer weather ahead, those in search of a new outdoor activity must look no further. Kubb, the classic Swedish yard game, dates back to the Vikings and is often described as a mashup between bowling and horseshoes.
On Sunday, April 23, the Los Angeles Kubb Club will host its seventh annual West Coast Kubb Championship in South Pasadena’s Orange Grove Park. Registration is open for teams and individual players and will remain so until the day before the tournament.
The all-day event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is open to all ages and skill levels — even those who have never played. Passersby have stumbled upon the tournament during past championships and joined in, with kubb players eager to share their love for the game.
“It’s a straightforward game, and anyone would be more than happy to teach the game to beginners,” noted Sophia Fineza, a coordinator for the LA Kubb Club and a WCKC organizer. The game’s main objective is to knock down wooden blocks by throwing batons, ultimately knocking down the “king” block in the center before your opponent.
The morning portion of the event will feature group play, while the afternoon will consist of two playoff brackets so all participants can have at least several hours of kubb fun. The top three winners will receive trophies; first place will win an additional kubb set.
The tournament is the largest and longest-running kubb event in the Western United States, bringing in over 30 teams and 75 players from Southern California and across the country, usually the Midwest, where kubb is increasingly popular, including past U.S. National Kubb Champions and finalists.
The two- to six-player game is meant to be enjoyed with friends as a leisurely outdoor pastime. Indeed, the championship is more a friendly hangout than a fierce competition, contrary to kubb’s nickname,
“Viking Chess,” referring to its origins and strategic gameplay.
“It’s just a fun way to get together with your friends, hang out and get outside,” Fineza said. “It’s not too physically stressful — it’s a calm, relaxing game, and you don’t have to be super skilled to play.”
LA Kubb Club is based in South Pasadena and began in 2015. The game has grown in the area and is now even an in-
tramural sport at the local middle school. For those looking to learn more about kubb, the club hosts Play ’n’ Learn events throughout the year.
Each July, dedicated club members travel to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, the “Kubb Capital of North America,” to participate in the U.S. National Kubb Championship. Members have brought home awards, including first place in the 2021 West Coast Kubb Championship and 2022 World Virtual Kubb League and several top-five finishes at the U.S. National Kubb Championship.
The LA Kubb Club will represent around five teams at the event, including the fathers who began the club and their children who have taken up the sport, like Fineza and her two sisters.
At its core, the championship is a lighthearted community event, with many coming out to watch the game and enjoy the lively and casual atmosphere.
“We’ve always enjoyed having friends, neighbors and kids play alongside some of the best players,” Fineza said. “It’s very casual; we have music playing, and it’s an excellent opportunity for everyone to get together — it’s just really fun.”

“Meditation Break” (4/13/23)
By Trent H. EvansChanging Careers
Former NBA player takes his shot in the wine business
By Jeff Moeller Pasadena Weekly Contributing WriterDuring his NBA playing days, Sasha Vujacic knew about pouring in big shots. He did, after all, make more than 500 three-point shots over his 10-year career, which included six standout seasons with the Lakers.
The former sharpshooter from Slovenia continues to pour … albeit in a second career. He is a winemaker now, having successfully repped the area’s most popular hoops team to focusing on hops in a state established with a reputation as one of America’s most revered wine regions.
“I live in LA and the pandemic kind of made it easier, going to retirement and deciding to go away and walk away from basketball,” he said of first breaking into the industry.
“Away” is Paso Robles, where Aleksander Wine by S&G Estate is a growing, prosperous business led by the 38-yearold Vujacic, who last played in the NBA in 2016. Working hard at crafting the perfect Bordeaux blend, it is also a full-blown family business, with mom and dad all in at company headquarters.
“I’m there probably once every two weeks,” Vujacic said. “When my parents need me, too. We don’t have public tastings. We have by appointment only for our wine club members. A lot of wine club members are also sports fans.”
Sports, and basketball in particular, is Vujacic’s first passion. Slovenia is a small country in Central Europe. It is mostly mountainous and forested, and Slovenia did not join the European Union until 2004 after breaking away Yugoslavia along with Croatia in 1991.
It was in his homeland, and also when he played in Italy, Vujacic first became passionate about wine.
“The basic differences are the aging process and the picking during the harvest and how the harvest is done,” he said when asked to compare the European winemaking process to that of the process in California. “But, overall, the biggest difference is European wines. Every grape represents the grape per se. When I’m having wine in California, sometimes wineries overreact with alcohol, but not all of them.”
When he made his NBA debut with the Lakers during the 2004-05 season, he be-
came only the fifth Slovenian to play to the league. Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic, one of the game’s top players today, is from Slovenia, as is LA Kings captain and two-time Stanley Cup winner Anze Kopitar.
“When I was a kid, my dream was to go to LA and play with the Lakers. And another dream was born over there. That dream was to own a family winery one day, as I was just obsessed with wine,” he said inside the new Chairman’s Club at Crypto.com Arena, where he was hosting a special pouring. “With the Lakers we won the championship, and I also realized the second dream.”
Vujacic said he and his parents (Goran and Ksenija) initially traveled all over California to find the best possible property. They wanted to make wine in the immediate future and for future generations. They secured a property investor in Paso Robles, located on the Salinas River approximately 30 miles north of San Luis Obispo and some 200 miles from LA.
Aleksander Wine by S&G Estate (Aleksandar is Vujacic’s given first name) has five employees: mom, dad, brother, sister and Sacha.
“Something that we cherish a lot is we decided to go quality over quantity. Everything we use has been grown here.”
Vujacic knows his time in Lakers purple and gold helps on the whole.
“It’s an honor. It’s an honor to be recognized for something you’ve done in the past, and anything you associate yourself with you want to make the best,” said Vujacic, a former first round choice of the Lakers and that organization’s record holder for the best three-point field goal percentage (.437) in a single season.
The highest honor for Vujacic on the court came in 2009 when the Lakers topped the Orlando Magic in the NBA Finals. Vujacic and The Lake Show did it again one year later to garner a second championship ring for the son of a Serbian basketball coach.
Vujacic last played competitive basketball (overseas) five years ago. He said he needed a couple of years to change his mindset from a player watching the game to someone who is eventually going to give back to future generations.
He added he was fortunate to spend as much time with Kobe Bryant, who he re-
ferred to as “a big brother,” as he did. He also knows he will be forever connected to the game of basketball, especially to the Lakers, and that the Lakers are his family.
Those experiences have only helped him in this second professional endeavor.
“The most important thing is our mindset. It is a worldwide mindset. We want to make low alcohol wines, the wines that are more approachable per se. Nothing against anybody else’s wine, but it’s just our palate, something that we’ve learned, and we age our wines for about three to four years. So, like I said before, we are all in with the quality and making the best ev-
ery single year,” Vujacic explained. “I take pride in what we’re doing because it’s a family thing. Again, it is only five employees. We obviously get a crew to help us harvest, and I’m all in. I’ve been all in from the beginning, and I get to pay attention to what Pops is doing during the year with the with the grapes and crop and the vines.
“So, it’s really, truly a passion and a love for the wine that we created and something that we want to share with the people who appreciate the same and have the same mindset and appreciate hard work.”
What the Future Holds
Thousands set to attend the PUSD Science Fest
By Leah Schwartz Pasadena Weekly Staff WriterAs the home of cutting-edge science institutions, Pasadena has much to offer in the way of technological career paths.
Many of these organizations will attend this year’s PUSD Science Fest at John Muir High School Early College Magnet from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 22. The event is free and open to the community.
The science fest aims to inspire K-12 students and their families, displaying the wide range of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, computing and environmental-based careers in the region and beyond.
“Fundamentally, we want to open people’s minds to the large range of interesting careers there are in STEM and to inspire kids about science and technology, the environment and generate enthusiasm in the kids,” said Warren Skidmore, an instrumentation system scientist at the Thirty Meter Telescope International Observatory, PUSD parent and lead organizer of the PUSD Science Fest.
“We want to link that with how kids can get from where they are today into a career in STEM if they’re interested; we try to show the educational pathways.”
The science fest is run and organized by parents and volunteers, and all participating groups are participating in a noncommercial capacity. Thousands are expected to attend, not including the 600 volunteers and professionals running the event.
Because the science fest coincides with Earth Day, many groups in attendance will be geared toward resource management, climate observation from space, recycling, environmental restoration, trash management, conservation, zero-carbon transportation and other methods of mitigating human impact on the environment.
Over 80 organizations and professionals will showcase projects, space missions
and current research, including Adam’s Forge, SpaceX, JPL, Caltech, Carnegie Observatories, Code Ninja and The Planetary Society, to name a few.
Along with leading scientific, engineering, environmental and medical institutions from around the Pasadena and LA areas, there will also be law enforcement, first responders, sports organizations, TV and film companies, armed forces, medical providers, public health companies, waste, water and power companies in attendance. These groups will also demonstrate how they apply science and technology to their respective fields, with STEM permeating almost every industry in the 21st century.
“All PUSD schools are invited to exhibit any aspects of their curriculum or extracurricular activities that relate to STEAM to showcase the achievements of their students,” Skidmore said. “We want students to see the real-life applications of the skills they are learning and be inspired by the opportunities available to them.”
The hope is that students envision how their current learning might be applied years down the line, discovering possible career pathways and sources of guidance and support.
Along with professional booths, students will also showcase projects. Sierra Madre Middle School’s Robotics Club will demonstrate their robotics chops, and students from Altadena Elementary will showcase how they use art to support science learning. Other PUSD schools will exhibit the variety of methods used to encourage and facilitate STEM education and extracurricular activities.
“We are thrilled to host the PUSD Science Fest,” said Dr. Lawton Gray, principal of John Muir High School Early College Magnet. “This event provides a great opportunity for the students to experience science outside of the classroom and gives students a better idea of how what they do in their science classrooms today connects to the real world.”

Achieving Excellence
By Luke Netzley Pasadena Weekly Deputy EditorOptions for Youth graduate Te’yana Brown has been granted a $50,000 college scholarship from Southern California Edison.
She received it at a recent event hosted by OFY’s Pasadena campus. The award, granted to 30 high school students each year, is part of SCE’s annual Edison Scholars Program built to help students pursue careers in the fi elds of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. For Brown, it’s a dream come true.
“It’s just really amazing,” she said. “They surprised me when I was at school. … My mom and my sister were there, and we were all really surprised.”
The Altadena resident, who graduated OFY in November, was honored by Richard Moreno, principal at OFY, and Heath-
er Rivard, senior vice president of transmission and distribution for Southern California Edison, at an afternoon ceremony on the public charter school’s campus. She was presented with flowers, a check and a medal symbolizing her achievement.
“I’d really just like to thank Edison and all of OFY for supporting me in my high school journey,” Brown told the crowd. “I just want to wish you guys the best and thank you guys so much. I love you.”
Brown said that her teachers have been some of her biggest sources of inspiration, encouraging her to expand her interests and join new groups, like the nonprofit Neighbors Empowering Youth robotics team.
“Te’yana greets every opportunity with the most amazing spirit of gratitude, and her optimistic mindset and ability to seek out resources has been an inspiration to
me and the OFY staff,” said Karina Castro, one of Brown’s teachers. “I knew I was working with someone who was incredibly bright and very special. One of her greatest strengths is her kindness. It shines through to whomever she interacts with and watching her work with other students has been a true joy.”
Moreno added that Brown’s “tenacity and dedication toward her education and in pursuing her dreams make her an exemplary model of academic excellence.”
Brown expressed her gratitude toward her teachers and their support, saying that they always had her back even when times were tough.
“Ms. Karina, she’s pretty amazing and she just always helps me when guiding me in the right directions when it comes to schoolwork or just talking about personal stuff, like finding internships and things like that,” she said. “They’re just always by my side, and they’re always guiding me in the right directions when it comes to finding scholarships (and) preparing for college.”
In her application to Edison, Brown emphasized her ambition and dedication to community service, including her involvement with student council,
the debate club, the robotics club and the OFY Pasadena yearbook staff. She’s held internship positions at AltaMed, Goodwill and Comet; was a mentor and editor for the OFY Lions newsletter; and founded the nonprofit Education is Achievable.
Brown also noted the resilience she’s maintained in the face of adversities, such as medical issues and housing instability.
“My mom actually didn’t have that much work during the pandemic, and we couldn’t afford our rent for housing, so we had to live in with our grandparents,” Brown recalled. “That’s been very difficult, and also just health-wise I’ve been dealing with a lot of gastroenterology issues, specifically dealing with eosinophilic gastritis and gastroparesis. That’s basically when there’s a lot of white blood cells and allergens in your stomach, and so that’s just been really hard because I haven’t been able to digest solid foods for about six months.
“I really love my school because they’ve always supported me and supported my diet and obstacles. When we were on a field trip, they went out of their way to buy
me a Panera soup so I didn’t have to eat any hard things that I couldn’t digest properly. And it’s just been challenging at times, but definitely having my friends and family close to me has made it easier. It’s made me … stronger in facing those challenges.”
The Edison Scholars Program award is one of several that Brown has received, including the 2023 National Dell Scholarship and the 2023 National SchoolHouse Connection Youth Leadership scholarship. Her advice for younger students is to stay focused on their dreams and utilize the resources that are out there to achieve them.
“I think a lot of kids out there either don’t know how to find scholarships or they’re just not too focused on or not aware of the different opportunities out there,” Brown said. “If you find anything, just take advantage of it and apply for it, because that’s the only way to get your foot in the door. And even if you don’t
win the first one, just keep on applying to them until you win the next one.”
With her scholarship money, Brown hopes to major in engineering and business at Harvey Mudd or Pitzer College. Her goal is to be the first of her family to get a four-year college education and then start her own architectural or engineering firm after graduation.
“We are so proud of Te’yana,” Moreno said. “Throughout her time here at OFY, she has overcome numerous obstacles. Now, thanks to this scholarship, she is one step closer to achieving the career goals that she has set for herself. She is a great example of someone who embodies our core values of grit, optimism, responsibility and gratitude.”

“Grand Views: The Immersive World of Panoramas”
MAY 13 TO SEPT. 10
Presented by Forest Lawn Museum of Glendale and the Velaslavasay Panorama, “Grand Views: The Immersive World of Panoramas” explores the history of panoramic paintings, an immersive, large-scale artistic format popularized in the 18th and 19th centuries. Presented by two distinguished, decades-old arts institutions and panorama experts, “Grand Views” will feature an array of artworks and artifacts spanning the late 18th century to present, including never-before-displayed preparatory paintings, 19th century prints and posters, a painted movie backdrop and more. Organized thematically, the exhibition addresses three major topics: the early history of panoramas, crucifixion panoramas, and panoramas in Hollywood and Los Angeles. In addition, Forest Lawn will launch a new documentary-style audio-visual program on Jan Styka’s “Crucifixion,” during the run of the exhibition. A centerpiece of the exhibition is “Panorama of the Valley of the Smokes” by Sara Velas, founder of the Velaslavasay Panorama, in 2000.

Notice To Potential Bidders: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.
